Enjoying the event's atmosphere and how their stage presence turned into a well-received performance, Tennant subsequently texted Cameron's staff pushing Cameron to use gay scientist Alan Turing's centenary year as impetus for the UK Government to formally pardon Turing.

 "..A terrible story. Of course, the reason they won't pardon Alan Turing is because they'd have to pardon all those homosexual men. Well, why don't they? Why don't they pardon them all, actually?" A few months previously, Neil was approached by then Prime Minister David Cameron, and then London Mayor Boris Johnson, asking for the Pet Shop Boys to play at Team GB's winners' parade after the London 2012 Olympic Games...A month later Neil texted Cameron the following message: "Thanks for asking us – actually it was really worth doing. And sorry to bug you, but could you pass on to the Prime Minister that in Alan Turing’s centenary year it would be an amazing inspirational thing to do to pardon him?”

He led the design of the chain drive on the bicycles used by Team GB in the Rio Olympics where the cycling team won 6 gold medals and broke two world records. He has been at Bristol University since 1997 mainly working in the area of design optimization of mechanical systems and biomechanical systems.
