GA Reflection
To be completely honest I had no idea that just like movies and music, writing also has different types of Genres. The prompt for the assignment was the first way thing that taught me. “Genres are categories that influence the format in which information is presented”. Just as we grow and adapt to different things the genres also evolve and change through time because of the way our communication changes. There are three types of genres: Typographic, Oral, and Iconographic. Based off the prompt and explanation of the assignment I did not think I would full understand. After going forth in the semester each assignment was feeding off the last and this helped me grasp a better understanding. I did miss a part of the assignment which was not elaborating on logos. The use of my supporting evidence should have also been more clear but looking back at the assignment I know how I could have mad it better. I learned through this that an academic paper should have all supporting evidence you can use to answer questions that might arise in your audience and to persuade them as well. Moving forward I will be sure to use all literary devices Logos, Ethos, and Pathos to make for a stronger paper. I feel that based on the rubric I was graded fairly and I was truly missing certain things here and there. I do have to say overall without the readings and rough draft I would have probably got a bad grade but thanks to that help I got a good grade after all.
Supporting evidence is everything, and in the Genre Analysis the information that was provided should have been presented correctly.

GA Reflection
1. What did you know about genres before this assignment and what impact do you think studying genres may have on your writing?
i honestly didn’t know a lot about genre before this assignment. In my RWS 1301 class, we touched a little on this subject but it was mainly genres like movies, letters, research papers, etc. I honestly did not know that all of these were all grouped into different categories. I believe that studying genres may have an impact not only on my writing but on everyone else’s. I think this is because we learned how to further analyze our sources and how to better use them. Before this assignment, I would just get direct quotes off of my sources but now I think that I can come up with my own conclusion about my sources.
2. What are the complexities of using genres?
I learned that when you use different genres in an assignment, it can be very complex. This is because you might interpret something in the source in a completely different way than someone else. Also, the genres might be very similar so it is hard to show the differences between them. It is also hard to use genres because one has to come up with their own ideas based on what the genre is telling us. Also, if you use two or more completely different genres, it might become hard to chose and stick to a certain writing style.
3. What is the value of studying and/or writing about genres?
Writing and studying about genres is very important because they are what make writing papers possible. Every source that we use in an assignment has it own genre. There is a value in studying these because it is what makes our writing possible. I once saw a connection that was made between writing and music. The notes, harmonies, rhythms, sonatas, etc in a piece is what makes up a beautiful piece of music. Same goes for writing because one of the most important parts in writing is the genre that one is using.
4.Select one of the questions listed and explain the rhetorical choices you made towards answering the question.
dFor the second question, I chose an image about colors where the color of the letters does not match the word. The purpose of this image is for the person to say the color of the letters and not the word. It is hard because one sees a color but our minds read the word instead. The reason that I chose this image is because this is how I felt when analyzing genres. I thought that I knew something about it and once I actually went deeper into it, it was something different. This assignment looked easy on the outside but once I was actually doing it, it was harder than expected.

Week 5 GA Reflection
1. What did you know about genres before this assignment and what impact do you think studying genres may have on your writing?
Before this assignment I didn’t know much about genres, the only genres I knew about where genres related to books such as fiction, non-fiction, drama, and medical. I think this misconception was due to the fact that during my previous schooling we never talked about genre analysis apart from those in books. I think that a positive impact can result by studying genres in our writing because it allows us to better understand the components of most genres and better write a genre analysis. I believe that by studying genres we can better get our point across because some genres are better at expressing our feelings.
2. What are the complexities of using genres?
Some complexities of genre analysis are learning how to present only the information given and staying away from giving an opinion or arguing about the information given. Also, at times it’s easy to go off topic and end up with an un-desired result. Additionally, it’s important to fully understand the meaning and purpose behind the genre or media and what the genre is trying to get across, or in other words be able to better analyze the content.
3. What is the value of studying and/or writing about genres?
The value or purpose of studying and/or writing about genres helps the writer better comprehend an assignment, reading, or visual genre. This allows the writer to know what elements to look for when exposed to genres. Also like previously stated by studying genres we can better know what genre appeals better to your targeted audience when trying to get a point across.
The rhetorical devices such as gif’s used to express my answer to question 3 are images that depict the process of understanding, the first gif proves that you can’t be wrong when being confused on a topic, meanwhile the second gif proves all the hard work and effort made to be able to complete the assignment. In this case just as the first gif, i too was confused on what had to be done to be able to complete the assignment to the instructor’s expectations, yet, once i learned what had to be done and i understood the assignment i was able to successfully complete the assignment.

Week 5
1. What did you know about genres before this assignment and what impact do you think studying genres may have on your writing?
I was aware that genres were different types of sources from which you gather information that is given/presented in different forms. I think that the impact the genres had on my writing contributed to how I presented my analysis.
2. What are the complexities of using genres?
Genres can be somewhat complex when using them, personally I would start off right, knowing exactly what I wanted to write but then I would catch myself going out of topic and it made me see that if you don’t pay close attention you can end up with giving your opinion when you’re supposed to be neutral on all sides. It is easy to make an error.
3. What is the value of studying and/or writing about genres?
The value of genres helps you think beyond the reading, it makes you think much more and helps you analyze everything better.
4.Select one of the questions listed and explain the rhetorical choices you made towards answering the question.
I choose question number three because most of the time when I’m working on an assignment I tend to overthink things and that just makes it harder for me to accomplish when in reality it is very simple.

Week 5 Post GA Reflection
1. Before this assignment I had thought that there wasn't that much to think about analyzing genres, that everything was pretty straight forward. I did not know exactly how to analyze each genre and take it for what it is actually worth based on the type. The certain impact that studying certain genres had on my writing is that it gave me a broader perspective of each individual genre. For instance, it made me more aware of the work and meaning behind every genre and a better understanding and analyzing the rhetorical components.
2. The complexities that I had found using certain genres is that some genres have more limitations than others and based on what genre is being used, the author can even take those limitations and positively use them as strong points rather than disadvantages.
3. I had found that the value of studying and/or writing about genres is that you get to view so much more than just what is placed in front of you. Studying each genre gives you a more in depth structure and viewpoint from which that genre was made and the messages that it is trying to convey to its audience.
4. For this question I have chosen to explain the rhetorical choices that I had made for the “iceberg” image that aided to convey my answer on question 3. I had chosen this image to give a visual as a viewpoint. I think the image helps convey that my answer to choice three is trying to show that behind every genre, there is so much more than just meets the eye. People only see the final outcome of a genre and most of the time dismiss the deeper bigger meanings behind that genre.

1. What are the complexities of using genres?
2. How does studying genres impact your writing?
3. What is the value of studying and/or writing about genres?
4. Select one of the questions above and explain the rhetorical choices you made towards answering the question. (Why did you do what you did? Why did you use what you did? etc)
For question three I used the gif of the animated cartoon characters Lilo and Stitch. In looking for a gif or picture for this question I instantly thought of characters or people “showing off” or acting overly confident, representing outcomes of studying/writing using the tools of studying genres, that can boost up your writing confidence.
