THE NIGHT IS HEAVY. . . the backroads of henrietta have quite suddenly unleashed a torrential downpour. the rain is lukewarm, a monument to the heat of the summer. streetlights are doing their best to shed light on the deserted road, but they can only do so much. where light does not touch, the woods loom, tall and still. he is on edge and so is the forest on all sides of them, poised and ready. gansey couldn't repeat back what he has just said if there were a gun to his head, but he knows that it came out wrong. ( there is. there is a loaded gun who has turned his back to him. )

❝ adam, wait. ❞ heavy droplets of rain against asphault drown out his voice. he's not sure if adam can't hear him or has chosen to outright ignore him. all the same. gansey has to make this right. the distance between them is already a jagged rip in the very fabric of gansey's being. gansey is moving, each step assured, the legs that hold him up strong and firm. ❝ adam. ❞ he says his closest friend's name again, much closer now. the boy-playing- man is so entirely certain in what he is doing, he is so careful to make his hand into a gentle weight around adam's wrist, he is so confident his words will fix this once he can make sense of them - - - his words fail him the moment adam turns. his heart is a jackhammer in his chest, his stomach an endless pit. gansey doesn't have anything he could say / gansey has novels worth of things he would say. his hands tremor ( from the rain, certainly ) as both go up to adam's jaw and his head tilts down, as ganseys lips press to adams.
