Shandel Allen’s Costume Party Project 

Presentation Summary

Material : Jeans Jacket, Acrylic paint, GAC 900

I chose Jean-Michel Basquiat for my costume party project. Basquiat is known for his neo-expressionism paintings. His paintings often depicted the black experience and black history.

I decided I would paint an artwork inspired by Basquiat that features two of his paintings.  The picture of Basquiat I chose to paint is from an iconic photoshoot he had with the late great King of Pop Art; Andy Warhol.  In the photoshoot both Basquiat and Andy Warhol were dressed as boxers and it was used as the promo cover for their  joint art exhibition in 1985.

I used acrylic paint and GAC 900. GAC  900 is a 100% acrylic medium that modifies paints for a softer hand and increased launderability on wearable fabrics.  In order to achieve the effect I had to mix 1 part GAC 900 to 1 part  acrylic paint.

I decided to paint Basquiat in black and white and recreate two of his paintings in my own way in colour on his boxing gloves. Having Basquiat in black and white and the artwork in colour on the boxing gloves create an interesting contrast. I recreated Basquiat's 1982 skull painting ”Untitled”.  In 2017 Basquiat's “Untitled” 1982 skull  painting was sold and became the first piece of art created after 1980 to be auctioned off at over $100 million.  On the right glove I decided to recreate Basquiat’s “Trumpet” 1984 painting.  The bright striking colours, the stick figures, the historical references, the signature writing of words and poetry and having them crossed out, and the jazz reference, depicts Basquiat in his element. Many of the subjects in Basquiat's pieces wore a crown and the crown became his signature artistic motif. As a way to pay homage to Basquiat I decided to paint a crown in his style over his head.

Inspired by his use of primary colours in his 1982 “Untitled” skull painting, I added loose brush paint marks to his body in red, blue and yellow. The paint markings I added to his body is a representation of how he as an artist would be covered in paint as he creates. I also decided to write his last name on his left glove and “Samo is dead” on his right glove. In his early graffiti years, Basquiat used to tag his graffiti as SAMO and eventually  put the tag to rest by writing “SAMO is Dead” all over the streets of New York City.  

I enjoyed creating my Jean-Michel Basquiat inspired costume. Basquiat had dreads and I have dreads and so luckily recreating his hairstyle came natural to me!

Ignore me for indulging

While visiting a planet they saved just moments from its destruction, Lance stumbled upon SH figuarts of his favorite show at another Earth store and, internally screaming his nerd out, bought the whole set of collection. Shockingly they costed less than back at your local Amazon but hey he wasn’t complaining. “I can’t believe I got all of the ones I wanted, I’ll have to delete my shopping list when we get back home.”

When Pidge and Hunk asked how he got them after they met up at the food court, they too immediately zoomed their way to get their favorites as well. Ultraman and Sailor Moon.

“Aw I was hoping I’d find Metal Heroes,” mourned Pidge, carrying 15 boxes each in two bags. “But I guess Ultraman would do.”

“Same here,” Hunk also bought the equal amount. “I thought they might have Satria Baruda Bima but no. They sold out. At least they still make Sailor Moon.”

Twinkling sparkles were flying off as they look at the merch they spent Gacs on. On the bright side they’re somewhat happy. Disappointed but happy.

Then their heads lit an idea, “Not to sound crazy but wouldn’t it be awesome if we meet our favorite characters? How cool would be to meet our long time heroes? Get to see up close?”

Lance shrugged, “We did meet Shiro’s Alternate self from another dimension. Whose to say the possibility is limited?” Another sparkle surrounded them, this time coming from him. “What if there’s a Kamen Rider universe? I’ve always wanted to wear a belt so I can transform into any Rider I wanted.”

He made a pose that mimicked wearing a built and hand gestures, “Henshin! Kamen Rider Kuuga!”

Though they were a bit embarrassed since everyone’s watching, Hunk and Pidge soon joined him to make poses.

Later that day

“—And that is our plan to infiltrate the Galra base located at the Grukl system.” Kolivan informed from the screen.

“Thank you for the information. We will aid you if things don’t go accordingly.”

After the transmission ended, they all sighed in exhaustion.

“It appears that Lance and the others haven’t return from their shopping. While I’m stuck here doing negotiations, they’re out there having fun. I must say; I’m jealous.” Allura was gloomy today. Despite being an official Paladin she still has diplomatic work to do. The cons of being a princess.

Lotor placed a hand to her shoulder, consoling her to the best of his ability. “Since you’ve been working as hard as everyone else, I believe a break should do it. We’ve already made peace with the locals and given their trust to us. How about we leave the castle and walk around the city? See if there’s anything you like.”

“Really?” Eyes twinkled in awe. “In that case.” Coran immediately went ahead and announce he’ll keep an eye on the ship, “It wouldn’t hurt to go out more, you deserve it anyway. Life isn’t getting younger so make it last.”

That left Keith in charge of diplomatic meetings which he really didn’t want to as he was about to leave as well to join the group but as Shiro’s chosen black Paladin and leader. He can’t. “Is this what I’ll do from know on? Never walk outside again. Dammit Shiro I just wanted to give Black back not be leader.”

While he’s sulking, Lance and the others returned from their shopping; all eager to open their merchandise. “I see you return from your shopping spree to buy unnecessary things again.”

“First of all they’re not unnecessary, they are beneficial,” Lance rolled his eyes, not phased by the offense. “Secondanly we found SH figuarts of our favorite shows!”

Surprisingly that caught his attention which puzzled the three but ignored in favor of explaining how they found them and used all their Gacs to get them. “Take me to them. I need to see if it’s real.”

And they did.

And they did not expect their leader to nerd out as well.

“They got all of them! All the Super Sentai figuarts!” He felt like a child again, seeing his favorite super heroes for the first time. “Jetman! Dairanger! Timeranger! Gaoranger! Hurricanger! Gekiranger!” There was a squeal and more sparkles flying out. “Do you have any idea how I dreamt of buying these guys when I found out on Amazon? This is a dream come true!”

“We also have the mechas for each installment,” the owner of the store added, with the zords all lined up in the counter.

“Shut up and take my money!”

Lance had to stop him from buying the entire store while Hunk and Pidge struggled to carry all the merch their leader bought.

“Who knew Keith is a Super Sentai fan? That doesn’t suit him considering the theme of the franchise.” Pidge always thought he was a more... action motorcycle guy. Given his appearance and personality.

Hunk, however, disagrees and chuckles, “You would’ve said the same to Lance. He’s been a Kamen Rider fan since he saw reruns of them as a kid. The franchise isn’t really kid friendly but he enjoyed it for the suits.” Pidge raised an eyebrow when he paused.

“And...?”

Hunk turned away, nearly holding his laughter once she realize this, “Lance always wanted to drive a motorcycle.”

“Are you serious?!” This newfound information... What kind of reverse roles is this? “You’re saying Lance wanted to be like them while driving a motorcycle and Keith enjoyed the power of friendship and love?”

They’re definitely gonna do some bonding sessions tonight, what more secrets are they hiding. Does Shiro watch what they watch?

“Lance also watched Devilman he’s seen all the mature content.”

Okay, note to self. Never guess what they like unless asked. Especially if you’re basing them off on their personality and outside activities.

Both stopped when they notice their friends starting an argument. Curiously yet tired of what lead to this, it didn’t take long to realize what it was about.

“Unlike your spandex guys, Kamen Rider isn’t afraid to kill off characters to leave an important message plus we don’t need to be giants to save some alien invasion.”

“Yeah well unlike your bike riders, Super Sentai is about teamwork which none of your riders have cuz it’s a one man deal and it’s very important to be giants so the cities don’t get destroyed by them.”

“You think a bunch of robots can keep themselves not damaging the cities? Big deal, my riders can beat five people in one go. Besides their transformation is way better than your spandex can.”

“No my spandexs are better than your riders!”

“Kinky but wrong!”

“Super Sentai!” “Kamen Rider!”

Oh my god. The irony. The irony of it all.

Pidge wipes a tear as she tries to keep her laughter to a minimum. “Lance prefers solo and Keith prefers teamwork. That can’t be right.”

“Maybe it’s their secret all along but I doubt it aligns their beliefs.”

“This is what the universe wants. The ultimate forbidden love.”

It ends with Lance and Keith playing with their figuarts to make a crossover video. Already resolved their differences. Then they thought it would be cool if they did figuarts of them in the future. “Probably when we save the universe I guess.”

Best Cars of the 2019 Detroit Auto Show: MotorTrend Favorites

As the first major event of the year, the Detroit auto show has historically marked the start of the auto show season. But in 2020, the show will move to June, which likely means 2019 is the last year the Motor City gets to kick things off for the auto industry. It’s the end of an era for the North American International Auto Show, and it went out with a bang by hosting big debuts like the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, sixth-generation Ford Explorer, and the highly anticipated return of the Toyota Supra. Keep reading to see which cars MotorTrend editors liked most from this year’s Detroit show.

2020 Ford Explorer

Yes, the Mustang Shelby GT500 is hundreds of horsepower sexier, but the importance of a new Explorer cannot be understated. It’s one of those bread-and-butter vehicles. The 2020 looks better inside and out, feels much roomier inside with a wheelbase that grew 6.3 inches, and adds two key new models: an ST and the first new Ford hybrid in six years. But the main reason we want to drive it is because it has moved to Ford’s new rear-wheel-drive platform with available all-wheel drive. And with the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 in the ST tweaked to get 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, Ford promises it will be the fastest SUV under $60,000. –Alisa Priddle

2020 Toyota Supra

Toyota’s fifth-generation Supra is my car of the show for two simple reasons. First and foremost, it led all 2019 NAIAS coverage for MotorTrend, likely for reason two: It sparked some huge debates on social media. Purists, it seems, are not impressed with the BMW partnership, specifically that the flagship sports car has the I-6 heart from BMW. I addressed this in my column, but was not prepared for the depth of purist rage. Some feel Toyota, with its deep pockets and huge resources, should have invested in a new inline-six, or wackier, used the 5.0-liter V-8 from Lexus or even the Yamaha-built V-10 from the Lexus LFA supercar. This is not as ludicrous as it sounds when you probe these true believers; that Supra apparently is not set up to deliver world-beating performance on the order of what the Nissan GT-R did back in 2007 is galling to these super fans. This wasn’t a perspective I had considered, but it’s interesting and, in many ways, understandable. –Ed Loh

Infiniti QX Inspiration Concept

Infiniti’s electric crossover concept was damaged in transit and could not drive onto the stage for its big moment in the spotlight. I’m OK with that because it speaks to the fact that it is a true concept, not a production-ready car gussied up for a show. Real concepts are becoming a rare breed. This baby FX is the design direction for the brand’s future crossovers while playing with ideas like a suede flat tile floor that looks like tile, a lattice glass roof, a marble center console that extends to the second row, Orient Express–type gold table lamps, and a shark nose with no grille up front. –Alisa Priddle

2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

As one of MotorTrend’s chief numerologists, I’m going with the big-number intros. OK, “700-plus” horsepower may not earn absolute segment bragging rights in the crazy/wonderful world we’re living in, but after my tech deep dive with the new Shelby GT500’s chief program engineer Carl Widmann, I’m willing to guess that the Ford’s savvier tire, brake, and chassis tuning will more than compensate for any deficiencies it suffers in outright brute strength relative to the ultracharged Mopar rivals for overall track dominance. Its aero tweaks and giant grille also seem better integrated than those on previous “road kings” from Shelby. –Frank Markus

2019 Ram HD

The other big number on everyone’s lips in Detroit was 1,000—as in the peak twist, in lb-ft, that Ram’s reimagined Cummins 6.7-liter cranks out in pursuit of its other crazy numerical statistics—35,100 pounds of towing (which the adaptive cruise control will brake to a stop and restart for you when traffic clears) and 6,910 pounds of payload (which actually jumps to 7,680 if you choose the gas V-8). We’re also pretty geeked about the number 12.0, which is the diagonal dimension of the Tesla-esque touchscreen handed up from our reigning Truck of the Year, the Ram 1500. Make mine a Power Wagon, please. –Frank Markus

Lincoln Continental 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition

Just a few short years ago, the industry was talking about Lincoln’s product line struggles, which was heavy on uninspiring, mustachioed sedans. The Germans and Asian luxury brands were eating their lunch, and Cadillac looked to be miles ahead. But now, after a strong Navigator launch, a shockingly sweet follow-up in the Aviator, Lincoln is back. Adding coach doors to the flagship Continental sedan is another neat, super-smart party trick. It automatically moves the brand upmarket (a real consideration for the chauffeured set) thanks to the massive rear cabin created by stretching the wheelbase 6 inches. The world needs more coach doors. –Ed Loh

The Entire GAC Lineup

This isn’t a best-in-show nomination, but it is an honorable-mention round of applause. The GAC GA4/GA6/GA8 sedans, GS3/GS4/GS7/GS8 crossovers, and GM8 minivan are potent commodity entries in every potential U.S. market segment. Unlike past almost-comedic displays by Chinese automakers, across the board the styling may be anonymous, but it is sufficiently attractive. The interiors are laid-out well with intuitive, not-too-plasticky controls and sharp details like the Judas Priest–esque leather-stitched floormats. The doors close with a reassuring “thunk.” Important packaging elements—legroom, foot room, shoulder room—tick all the boxes. There are no glaring errors. We still have no idea how well the GAC vehicles drive (or crash), but if you peeled off the labels and put them next to a fleet of top-end Kias or Chevrolets, on initial impression you might not be able to tell them apart. If GAC arrives in the dawn of a recession with a strong value play on price, they could do some damage. —Mark Rechtin

Charged Up: The EVs of the 2019 Detroit Auto Show

The North American International Auto Show in Detroit isn’t generally a hotbed of battery-powered vehicles; automakers tend to lean toward debuting new EVs at the Los Angeles auto show, owing to the vehicles’ popularity there and California’s mandate for zero-emissions vehicles. But this year’s Detroit show was different, with the city playing host to a number of new electric cars and concepts in addition to those vehicles already on the market. Read on for our roundup of the EVs of NAIAS.

Cadillac EV SUV Although it doesn’t yet have a physical concept vehicle to show, Cadillac revealed renderings of a large electric-powered SUV it plans to build as one of the first vehicles to use General Motors’ future electric platform. Details were thin, with Cadillac revealing only that the platform will be scalable to simplify development of different vehicle types, accommodate a wide range of battery sizes, and be capable of front-, rear-, or all-wheel-drive. Chevrolet Bolt Now in its third year of production, the Bolt was the first EV to deliver 200+ miles of range (238, to be specific) at a price tag under $30,000 after incentives, and while there were several vehicles at the show that can make the same claim, the Bolt remains the most prominent of Detroit’s EV efforts. GAC Entranze Concept Chinese automaker GAC introduced a concept car called the Entranze, which was styled at its newly opened design studio in Los Angeles. This seven-seat SUV-ish vehicle is stated to have an electric powertrain, although the company didn’t provide specifics. We’ll have to wait until the production version goes on sale (presumably in China) in the second half of 2019 to find out more.

GAC GE3 GAC also brought a production electric vehicle called the GE3. Details about the front-drive hatchback were scant, but we know it has a 132-kW (177-hp) electric motor and a top speed of 97 mph. GAC claims a range of 190 miles, but that’s at a constant 37 mph; real-world range would be shorter. GAC’s North American launch is some ways off—and has been delayed slightly by the trade tiff with China—but it appears likely that it would sell a small EV like this in the United States.

Hyundai Kona Electric The electric version of Hyundai’s Kona has the longest range of any affordable electric car—258 miles according to the EPA. The Kona EV also offers a surprising amount of off-the-line scoot, and is overall quite pleasant to drive. [Read more]

Infiniti QX Inspiration Concept The QX Inspiration concept car gives us a preview of Infiniti’s first all-electric SUV—or, more specifically, a line of electrified SUVs. “Electrified” indicates electric elements in the powertrain, and Infiniti has announced that this platform will support gas-electric hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains as well as a full-electric battery-powered version. Infiniti Prototype 10 This sleek electric concept debuted last year during Monterey Car Week—just prior to which we photographed it in our studio and spoke with its designer—doesn’t have a running powertrain, but it is theoretically electric and is intended to show the brand is serious about building fun and emotional EVs. Kia Niro EV The all-electric version of Kia’s Niro was revealed last year but hasn’t yet reached the market. The Niro EV offers 201 horsepower, 291 lb-ft of torque, and 238 miles of range. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but we’d be surprised if the Niro EV didn’t fall under the barrier of $30,000 after federal tax incentives. [Read more]

Kia Soul Electric Another new EV from Kia is the electric version of the all-new 2020 Soul. The Soul shares its powertrain and 64-kWh battery pack with the Niro, but despite its boxy shape it has 1 additional mile of range for a total of 239. As with the Niro EV, pricing for the electric Soul has not yet been announced.

Mahle MEET Mahle is a German parts supplier, and its Mahle Efficient Electric Transport (MEET) is a city-car concept powered by two small 48-volt electric motors. It is said to squeeze 124 miles of range from a small 20-kWh battery pack, but the top speed of 62 mph probably wouldn’t fly in the States.

Nissan IMs Concept The IMs concept made its world debut at the 2019 Detroit show. Its 483-hp, all-wheel-drive dual-motor powertrain promises blistering performance, while its 115-kWh battery pack is good for a stated range of 380 miles. This is still merely a concept, but it shows that Nissan is contemplating electric replacements for sporty sedans like the Maxima. [Read more]

Nissan Leaf Plus This is the new long-range version of the Leaf, though its 226 miles of range falls short of competitors like the Bolt and Kona Electric. Small blue trim strips on the bumpers differentiate the Leaf Plus from other Leafs, and the car has been raised by 0.2 inch to accommodate its larger battery pack. [Read more]

Quadrobot Model U1 Equipped with a swappable battery pack and a small forward cabin, this little box also has modular cargo space, four-wheel steering, and a skateboard-style chassis that incorporates its electric drivetrain, steering, and suspension. The car’s maker says the chassis—which it calls Quadropod—may be sold as a separate unit to other manufacturers.

Rinspeed MicroSNAP Another future mobility solution, this Rinspeed concept first showed up at 2019 CES and features a skateboard chassis and a removable cabin that were displayed separately at the Detroit show. The upper portion can be customized to autonomously deliver cargo, online shopping purchases, or people.

SVEN This little EV pod comes from share2drive, a German company. The idea is, as the company says, to “fill the gap between private and public transportation.” It has three seats and is said to be “prepared for autonomous driving.” Top speed is 75 mph, and it offers a numerically similar maximum range of 75 miles.

Toyota Concepts Toyota had a big show with the debut of the new Supra, but it also brought several of its far-out electric concepts from the past few years, including the i, the i-RIDE, the i-WALK, the i-ROAD, and the FCV-2.

Volkswagen e-Golf The Volkswagen e-Golf is an EV we admire for its functionality and everyday livability. Unfortunately, its 125-mile range is peanuts compared to the latest batch of affordable EVs with ranges of 200 miles or better. You can bet that VW’s coming crop of EVs will do better—much better. Carolina in the Fall Music and Food Festival Announces Its 2017 Program and Opens Ticket Sales

This September, the third annual Carolina In The Fall™ Music and Food Festival presented by Wilkes Communications, Inc. continues its’ tradition of celebrating the heritage of western North Carolina through music, food and beverage. On September 22nd and 23rd, 2017, over 100 musicians, chefs, vintners and craft beer brewers from the region will gather on Main Street in Wilkesboro, NC to engage audiences with the best of their craft.

Wilkes County’s own The Kruger Brothers will be the Festival hosts again and welcome some of North  Carolina’s best Folk/ Roots music bands. They will be joined by bands from other regions that tip their hats to the rich musical history of Wilkes, the Heart of American Folk Music™. This year’s line-up includes The Kruger Brothers, The Kontras Quartet , The Black Lillies, Darin and Brooke Aldridge, The Snyder Family Band, Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys and many others.

The Kruger Brothers

Originally from Switzerland, brothers Uwe and Jens Kruger began playing North American folk music at an early age and were particularly inspired by recordings of Doc Watson, Flatt and Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and other progenitors of country, bluegrass and folk music. Their first public performances were as a duo, busking on the streets of cities throughout eastern and Western Europe.

After gaining a recording contract as well as a radio show on SRG SSR, the Swiss public broadcaster, they teamed up with bass player Joel Landsberg, inaugurating a trio that has been playing professionally together since 1995. Landsberg is an American citizen from New York, NY. The Kruger Brothers moved to the United States in 2002, and are based in Wilkesboro, NC.

Through their numerous CD releases, radio and television performances, lectures, and collaborative efforts, The Kruger Brothers’ powerful artistic statement continues to inspire and enlighten audiences and musicians around the world.

The Kontras Quartet

Admired for their "superlative artistry" (CVNC Arts Journal), the Kontras Quartet has established an international following for their vibrant and nuanced performances. The "superb Chicago-based ensemble" (Gramophone Magazine) has been described as "a tightly crafted and beautiful instrument" (CVNC Arts Journal) and has been lauded for their "crisp precision" (Palm Beach Daily News) and "enjoyable musical personality" (Fanfare Magazine). Kontras means contrasts in the Afrikaans language - fitting for a string ensemble whose colorful repertoire spans centuries, genres, and continents.

Formed while the group's members were string principals in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Kontras Quartet began pursuing a professional career in 2009. Kontras enjoyed immediate recognition, holding their own against seasoned string quartets from around the country to win a four-year chamber music residency with the Western Piedmont Symphony in North Carolina, a full-time position established through Chamber Music America's Residency Partnership Program. The quartet has received continued training with the Vermeer Quartet and Juilliard String Quartet.

The Black Lillies

The Black Lillies’ story is one of hard work and highway miles … a story that traces their evolution from a group of friends making music in songwriter and frontman Cruz Contreras’ living room into what is now one of Americana’s biggest success stories: an internationally-renowned band of roots-rockers, armed with songs that blur the boundaries between folk, soul, red dirt country, blues and jazz.

More importantly, The Black Lillies’ story is still unfolding, with the band’s sharp, southern-influenced songs — including Americana radio hits like “Hard to Please,” the kickoff single and title track from the band’s most recent album — leading the charge. Featuring multi-instrumentalist Contreras, bassist and vocalist Sam Quinn, drummer Bowman Townsend, guitarist/vocalist Dustin Schaefer, pedal steel player Jonathan Keeney and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Haley Cole, The Black Lillies enter this chapter as one of the most visible, viable groups in contemporary roots music.

Darin and Brooke Aldridge

Husband and wife duo Darin & Brooke Aldridge draw on the traditions of their native North  Carolina, the savvy of a young, gifted band and their own dedication to ingenuity to create the most adventurous album of their career with their latest release, Faster & Farther.

The duo has placed several tracks at the top of the charts on Americana/Roots, SiriusXM, Bluegrass and Gospel charts. They have received multiple nominations from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPGBMA) and Inspirational Country Music (ICM). Their music videos “Wildflower” and “Tennessee Flat Top Box” were heavily featured on outlets including CMT, CMT Edge, GAC, Bluegrass Ridge TV and The Bluegrass Situation. TV appearances include PBS, Great American Gospel, The Bluegrass Road, Presley’s Country Jubilee, RFD-TV, Rural-TV, Daystar Network, Blue Highways TV, Songs of the Mountain, Woodsongs and Music City Roots.

Each evening during the festival, the Kruger Brothers will host the Carolina Jam™ at the Yadkin Valley Event Center at the Wilkesboro Holiday Inn Express. Artists from each day will come together to present once in a lifetime, unforgettable jam sessions. Last year’s Jams were the talk of the festival and beyond.
