You didn’t think we were going to stay silent during the current dragon frenzy, did you? We absolutely have things to say about dragon heroes, and the one from Thea Harrison’s Dragon Bound in particular — which meant we had no choice but to do a surprise deep dive, read along! We talk about dragon shifters, about the history of dragons in romance, about why we think this is a near perfect example of paranormal romance and road trip romance. Also, if you are looking for rom com, look no further. This is a funny funny book.

I just finished About a Dragon by GA Aiken and as you’ve probably guessed it’s about a dragon but he’s large and arrogant but friendly and the same way in his human form and he rescues a jaded, sarcastic woman from being burned at the stake for being a witch by her dickhead husband and village and I gotta say the nessian vibes are impeccable (it’s a lot more smut than I was expecting and there were a few weird parts but overall the women are written well and there’s even discussion of abortion where everything’s the woman’s choice) also there’s a surprising amount of plot and actual interesting world building. Oh and he’s a couple hundred years old and she’s 33 which I loved.

It’s not always easy being a female warrior with a nickname like Annwyl the Bloody. Men tend to either cower in fear—a lot—or else salute. It’s true that Annwyl has a knack for decapitating legions of her ruthless brother’s soldiers without pausing for breath. But just once it would be nice to be able to really talk to a man, the way she can talk to Fearghus the Destroyer. Too bad that Fearghus is a dragon, of the large, scaly, and deadly type. With him, Annwyl feels safe—a far cry from the feelings aroused by the hard-bodied, arrogant knight Fearghus has arranged to help train her for battle. With her days spent fighting a man who fills her with fierce, heady desire, and her nights spent in the company of a magical creature who could smite a village just by exhaling, Annwyl is sure life couldn't get any stranger. She’s wrong . . . And just wait until you meet the rest of the family . . .

2022 Top reads and listens
How do you say you were off work for ½ the year without saying it? By the sheer number of books I’ve read and listened to in the past year! With a possible 2 or 3 books still left before the year end, I’ve read or listened to 447 books, my most ever. That equates to 99,113 pages, according to Goodreads, with the shortest book being 15 pages and the longest 2,132 (an anthology). The average book length was 221 pages, and that seems about right to me
My 2022 reading year was made up of binges and actually making a dent in my TBR. Don’t get me wrong, my TBR is still out of control, but I did make headway into it. This was done by grabbing authours off the list and then going through all the books of theirs I had. Now, this lead to me grabbing more books, let’s face it, when you have a book in the series, or more than one, and it is good, you move on to the rest of those books. All I can say is thank goddess for Kobo plus and Scribd (ebook and audio) as I plummeted into series and didn’t break the bank 😊
Coming up with a top ten for the year was brutal because I enjoyed so many books, but, I did narrow it down. It is a good mix of new releases in the year and books from my TBR that I enjoyed <3
I finally got to GA Aiken’s Dragon Kin series and couldn’t have loved it more! What A Dragon Should Know was my favourite, and considering where the Scarred Earth sage went, it was timely for me to get these books under my belt. These were audiobooks and available on Scribd
Bounty by Kristen Ashley was one of my first listens of the year as I finished up the Colorado Mountain series. So many books were great in the series, but these two stuck with me, maybe it was the great soundtrack they presented, or how they fit together, either way, they left an impression. Audiobook listen from audible
While catching up on the Brooklyn series by Sarina Bowen, she released Shenanigans, and this book had so many feelings and fun! You never knew if the couple was going to have you in tears or make you laugh, and that was just perfect. This was an audio ARC listen, ebook available in Kobo plus
Where I Belong by J Daniels sat on my TBR in paperback AND ebook, and I was finally able to work it into my schedule. Loved this enemies to lovers, and the cast of characters it brought to us. Part of the binge of the Alabama series, this series stared was wonderful. Ebook read on Kobo (though the series is now in KU)
Curse of the Dragon by Eliza Gayle first caught my attention because of the amazing cover. Then when I got the story, it was better than I ever expected! The fantasy world created is amazing and the characters have such depth, loved it, loved it, loved it. This was an ARC ebook read, available in KU
When Elle Kennedy announced she was releasing Misfit, I knew I’d grab it, but I was in no rush. I should have rushed because this prep school was so much going on above and below the surface, it sucked me totally in! Audio listen on audible
Eve Langlais created a fantasy world for her Magic and Kings series and I immediately fell for it. The Barbarian King’s Assassin was a wonderful introduction to the series, and had a great plot and storyline. Cannot wait for more in this world! Audio listen on Scribd, ebook available in Kobo plus
Speaking of TBR reads, Kate’s Secret by Kallpyso Masters has been sitting on my bookshelf since 2017. When I noticed it was available in Kobo plus, I grabbed it, preferring to read in ebook over paperback. Then I proceeded to kick myself for waiting so long to get to it because it was amazing. It seamlessly blended the real and mystical world, while providing a solid second chance romance. Ebook read in Kobo plus
I am slowly working through NJ Walters’ backlist, and hit the Salvation Pack. Wolf in his Heart was an emotional read and my favourite of the series. There was so much that touching in the story, while not being angsty, and the family and pack bonds were so strong. Ebook read in Scribd
Speaking of emotional reads, Zoe York released Fearless at Heart, book 4 in the Kincade’s of Pine Harbour. This is a second chance, twenty years later, first love reunited, and so much more! While the flashbacks held deep feelings, the current and future were the real emotional kickers in this book. Ebook ARC read, available in Kobo plus.

I genuinely think romance is a deeply underrated genre that is sneered upon because of its associations with femininity; I think it’s utopian and hopeful and worthwhile and I crave good romance stories. At the same time I hate most romance novels that I try to read.
I had Covid this week and for a few days was too sick to even look at a book or screen so I downloaded a bunch of audiobooks from the library and I gave up on every single one of them:
1. Notorious by Minerva Spencer. I noped out of this a few pages in when one character was described as delectable and luscious and another character’s eyes were described as orbs. The book also comes with a whole heaping of misogyny and Islamophobia apparently.
2. Georgie All Along by Kate Clayborn. The first ??? 20 ??? Or so pages of this book consist of the heroine back in her home town and going into a deli to order a coffee and not having enough money to pay for it because she left her wallet in the car. 20 pages!!! It’s humiliating and is literally like being stuck in the head of the most neurotic person you’ve ever met. Page after page of this woman ruminating about what a loser she is. Exhausting! And I say this as someone who can ruminate at the Olympic level.
3. Pretty Pretty Boys by Gregory Ashe. This one is an m/m series about two cops who fall in love and I had hopes that it might be solid but the characterization was basically “whatever the author felt like writing”. Also the cops act like cops as in they’re abusive to random people and spend a lot of time being horrible, which I don’t really need in a romance.
4. Not Your Average Hot Guy, Gwenda Bond. Idk this was just. A bit? Boring? Also everyone was just a bit too self consciously sassy. The heroine runs an escape room but one of her props turns out to be actually a demonic book. I think one of my issues with this book and so many other romance novels is that banter is a real skill and most people can’t write it. But everyone, regretfully, tries.
5. Liar City, Allie Therin. There’s this one audiobook narrator who has such a snotty voice that I just cannot. This book might have been great but the instant I started listening I knew it was that dude. Maybe I’ll try it as an actual book.
6. The Blacksmith Queen by GA Aiken. This is one of the worst books I’ve ever tried to read. Truly. The heroine is a blacksmith and the hero is a centaur, which I thought sounded fun (also I was wondering how they’d have sex because I’m like that) but it was … puerile? Astonishingly stupid?
7.Capture the Crown, Jennifer Estep. This is also an absolutely idiotic book. The hero has amethyst eyes and the heroine has some other gem coloured eyes and someone else has sapphire eyes and if you took a shot every time it someone’s eye colour was described as a jewel tone you’d be hospitalised for alcohol poisoning by about page four.
8. A taste of gold and iron, Alex Rowland. This is decently written - as in the prose is solid - but the plot is half baked, the characters are tedious, and the world building is intriguing but paper thin. I’d say it’s a much better book than most here, but I still couldn’t bring myself to finish.
Not everything I’d read lately has been terrible so here’s some romance or romance adjacent books I have actually enjoyed:
1. The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang: This book is not going to change your life but it does what sets out to do with a slight if entertaining love story.
2. The Secret Lives of County Gentlemen, KJ Charles: I think Charles is one of the best and smartest historical romance writers I’ve ever read. Her books are everything I want out of romance: the characters are interesting, idiosyncratic, and sympathetic; the details feel right; the stories work; and the sex scenes are both hot and do important plot and character work. Her books are swoony and emotional and feel very real while still being romantic. (The audio narrator of this let it down a little because he took a lot of odd pauses but I’m being super nitpicky.)
3. A Far Wilder Magic, Allison Saft: This is a sweet YA novel set in an interesting fantasy world - I really enjoyed the prickly heroine and her dog.
4. In Memoriam, Alice Winn: This beautiful, heart-rending novel is not exactly a romance - it’s set during WW1 and has very explicit and realistic scenes set in the trenches. The trauma and suffering of the war are achingly portrayed. But it is a love story between two young soldiers, even if it’s not necessarily one with an easy or simple ending. Highly recommend with the caveat that Winn does not shy away from the brutality and senselessness of WW1.
5. Thornhedge, by T Kingfisher: This is a brief but resonant Sleeping Beauty retelling. Not exactly a romance but also not unromantic. My only complaint is that I wanted more. I’m a big T Kingfisher fan, and I adore her practical, earthy characters (like Toadling).
6. We Could Be So Good, Cat Sebastian: I’m here for everything Sebastian writes. Her books are low stakes but still compelling, her characters are likeable and complex, I actually enjoy her banter, and she has a knack for capturing historical details and moments. Her conflicts never feel fake and the resolutions are always earned.

4 historic gas lamps in Covent Garden, London, have been listed! 🎉
Street lighting fuelled by gas began in London. By 1823, public spaces across the country were lit by gas. There are now around 1,300 working gas lamps in London, with around 270 in Westminster. Of these 270, about half are currently listed.
The 4 lampposts along Russell Street are part of a collection installed around Covent Garden in 1910 to mark the beginning of King George V's reign.
They have been listed at Grade II as a result of a pilot project by us to help inform ongoing discussions about the management of gas lamps in Westminster and beyond.
The listings have been welcomed by Nickie Aiken MP, The London Gasketeers and The Victorian Society who have requested the protection of the capital’s early streetlighting. We'll work with City of Westminster on their maintenance.
📍 Covent Garden, London | Grade II listed.

1,4,7 and 9 :)
Nah fuck it, I’m doing both!
1. three songs that come up when you put your phone on shuffle
Seeking Somewhere, by Monument Of A Memory Proxy, by Valis Ablaze Legion, by TesseracT
4. three songs that you know thanks to your parents
Many, but here are some faves:
(No seriously)
7. three songs you didn’t expect to like but eventually loved
Believe it or not, as much as I love Lorna now, I really did not care for this song in the beginning. I’m not real huge into deathcore (I have bands I like but it’s far from my favorite subgenre), and I did not vibe with this song at first. Obviously that changed. I tried it again when I was in a different mindset and fell completely head over heels in love with the whole ep!
Again, believe it or not, I didn’t particularly care for Ghost Atlas the first time I heard them. I was already an Erra fan, so I already adored Jesse Cash, but GA was so totally different from Erra and it simply wasn’t what I needed at the time. Then All Is In Sync came out in 2017 and their sound finally clicked with me, and I went back and ended up really loving this song in particular. This is also a great band if you like alt rock/indie rock.
Listen, way back in 2014, when I was discovering Erra and Amity for the first time, Psy’s Gangnam Style went viral for the second time in the States and a couple of BTS mv reactions had landed on lame ass “comedy” shows that my ex-bestie watched like tosh.0, and I tried to listen to BTS just to see what all the hype was about. I listened to this album and fucking hated it. I always give songs to the chorus to catch my interest before I skip, and I ended up skipping every track, but I really disliked this one. I could not pinpoint why exactly, I just did not fuck with it at all. Fast forward to like six fucking months ago and this is one of my favorite songs period, let alone one of my fave BTS tracks. I LOVE this song. I listen to it almost every day (followed immediately by cypher 3, not big on the other two cyphers, but I love these two). This is not the song that made me actually fall in love with BTS’s music, that distinction goes to a track from the same album (Tomorrow), but this one has earned a spot in my regular rotation for sure
9. three songs that get you in the Christmas Mood
(That is hands down my favorite Christmas song ever)
Of course
And Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, but no specific version of it
10. three favourite Halloween/spooky songs
Imma basic ass goth bitch, so naturally:
And because I hit the audio limit (lame)
Cry Little Sister, the theme song from The Lost Boys (and yes, I do actually prefer the original over the covers I've heard. BUT if anyone has a cover they like of it, feel free to send it!)

The Heretic Royal by GA Aiken
5 stars
I will admit it, there was happy dancing and fist-pumping when I realized where this story was headed!!! Ainsley and Gruffyn are amazing together, overlooked by most, but known to everyone, they connect on a whole other level. Of course, they don’t’ connect as they should on some levels, and when they do, they rush full forward <3
Full of action, with all the wit, joy, love, and clashes we’ve come to expect from the authour, this book had it all. What it also has, well, it has some of the most beloved characters we know, and where this story is going, we’re all going to be following it through!
