happy spooky month everybody

watching a bedbananas video that gave me amazing digital circus and hlvrai vibes now has me thinking about my hlvrai au so i'm going to talk about that now

it's called Half Life VR But The Roles have Swapped or HLVR:RS for short

further explanation under the cut

as you can tell by the name, it's a role reversal because that's always the first idea that pops up in my mind when making aus

unlike my other swaps, this one is a little different. instead of everyone swapping, there's only two: benrey with gordon and tommy with g-man. everyone else stays the same. just to spice things up a little!

the story centers on a young man named benjamin calhoun (not related to barney) as he catches wind of a VR version of Half Life 1. him being a big half life fan, he orders it and decides to play.

he puts in his username benrey and volia! he's in. and he's absolutely amazed. the technology is so good, it feels like he's actually in black mesa!

as he explores the lab, he discovers some oddities with this version. like the weird security guard that looks awfully a lot like gordon freeman-

oh wait that's actually gordon WHAT

also there's these scientists named dr. coomer and bubby and g-man's here for some reason.

all of this is very strange, but he can work with it.

he goes to get his HEV suit and it's blue instead of orange.

...eh, must be a custom model like the one he's using.

anyways, time to go to the xen crystal.

but when he gets to the elevator he finds a guard already in. the same guard that gave him access to the lab. when asked why he's here, he says 'for protection' and nothing else.

when ben finally reaches the crystal, he can feel its energy emanating off of it in waves. before he realizes it, he's touching it and it feels much more real than everything else in the game.

was it him or can he hear voices-

then he sees gordon standing in front of the machine, blocking his path. but he acts very differently from the chipper man he met earlier. he's more serious, telling him that he doesn't have to do this, he can just stop right here and leave.

but ben still thinks that it's a part of the game. gordon looks at him and sighs. "alright. don't say i didn't warn you."

he lets him insert the crystal and the Resonance Cascade happens. except it feels real. very real. and then ben blacks out.

when he comes to, the entire facility is a wreck. he hears a voice helping him and it's gordon except he doesn't look like a old-fashioned video game model, but an actual living, breathing person.

eventually he reunites with the others and sees that not only do they look real, but the world does too. he goes to the locker room and doesn't see the avatar looking back, but himself. he has glowing blue eyes now, but other than that it's an exact copy of his irl body.

which means only one thing. he's trapped.

Ok so. As far as I know I never actually posted this so: The official Portal/Half Life swap au timeline! (credits to @breakcoreboxcat for being normal about this with me and coming up with a lot of this with me and also being my best friend) [Things to keep in mind: Cave and Breen are gay, Mythos is G-man in this universe, and Robo Cave is not the canon one from Apeture Desk Job he can actually function. No Life is Half Life but Portalways, and Lambda is Portal Half Lifeways]

1922: Those Two idiots are born

Prior to 1980: Rivalry stuff, hatemail (not ship(kinda)) portal established

1980: black mesa died, Cave went a bit. Not good. Because his Loser BoyToy died and he kind of went into overdrive.

Late 1982: Caroline gets GLaDOSed

1983: Cave gets roboted

1984: robot apocalypse starts

(People getting captured so GLaDOS can run more tests, eventually progresses into people being forced into a digital hivemind. She also bullies Robo Cave)

1985ish: Mythos began existing. He gets sent to Black Mesa sometime before No Life1

(Footnote: Chell is born roughly 1979-1980, Barney and Adrian born 1970ish, Gina and Colette about 1960ish, Gordon was born 1993)

1995: No Life 1 begins

(Chell leaves Aperture (og), goes through robot city and then a human processing facility (steal the bones burn the rest for fuel)  goes back to Aperture to find GLaDOS. She also kills Robo Cave. fights GLaDOS. She survives because of the Aperture in the middle of the ocean) (setup for the world getting better, finds out GLaDOS is still alive in the middle if the ocean, gameplay stuff, Chell teams up with the Resistance guys because. Yeah. So they get Chell to the ocean facility, she kills GLaDOS for realsies this time)

2000: No Life 2 ends

(GLaDOS gets died) (those gay old men are ghosts now, they're reading Breen's Perfectly Preserved hatemail (not ship) binder. and bullying each other(affectionate(derogatory)))

2010: Lambda begins

(The resistance guys tell gordon about a thingy (mythos) that's in the old black mesa building and they make a plan for him to get there)

(Lambda 1 Gordon goes through the og aperture laboratory to get to A Portal in an office that leads to a different office in black mesa) (Lambda 2 Mythos exists, he's doing hot girl shit like robot therapy. Gordon goes through black mesa to find him, does, goes back home.)

Postgame: robots get integrated into society yippeeeee also everyones okay and its all good and happy woohoo!!) The world is healing :) *.~☆(⁠人⁠*⁠´⁠∀⁠｀⁠)⁠｡⁠*ﾟ⁠+

presenting: the barney and gman swap au! stemmed from the fact that barney n  gman share the same VA and that is, frankly, terrifying!

Barney is the chief of security at Black Mesa, but he’s rarely seen by anyone, much less the security team and the administrator. He watches over Gordon as he escapes from Black Mesa, to see if he’ll be a good addition to his own private security team.

Agent Michael (yes after Michael Shapiro) is a government agent who’s moved to Black Mesa, after having been at the rival company Aperture Science for a good few years. He keeps all lawsuits and OSHA violations under wraps; he prefers to do things nonviolently, but he does have a gun in his jacket.

"Swap" AU - outline from a never finished fic

hi hi... i decided i would dump this document of a fic i never got to write. months back when i was hyperfocused on writing fics i had this swap AU idea and i sadly got burnt out before i could tackle it. it was gonna be a multichapter thing. and i would rather it gets shared in some form then never at all! so here is a mess of notes from my document, all random thoughts and ideas. Also includes the unfinished outline for chapter 1.

Where it changes from canon: Gordon does not make contact with Barney at the start of HL:2, and after [the combine] trying to figure out who he is, Gordon is led directly to the citadel to meet Breen who wants to see him. Basically Gordon entirely sides with Breen in this swap, and in turn Alyx plays Gordon's role in the resistance.

DETAILS TO COVER:

Breen is aware of what occurred during Rescas, and holds some negativity towards Gordon for not going against the government/etc that was simply trying to help them.

Still, Breen didnt know Gordon well at all and feigns kindness towards him, acting as if he holds nothing against Gordon for his actions.

Barney is trying to reach Gordon through the start of (multiple chapters) the story. Gordon will have only fleeting contact with him to where he doesnt recognize or have time to realize it is Barney, but there will be chapters covering Barney's perspective.

Alyx perspectives where she takes Gordon's place as a savior figure for the resistance.

Minor detail to throw in: Anyone in contact with G-man has a hint of blue in their eyes, stronger for those who have been taken by him more often. This includes Gordon, Breen, Alyx and eventually Barney.

Adrian Shepard inserted into the story due to Gordon's absence? Maybe?

Something about it ends on Gordon's birthday, last chapter named after song The Constable (by sloppy jane)

Alyx savior moment, results in those considering her simply an asset to Gordon's freedom once he turns on breen (turning him back towards savior figure path), she is disheartened by this. its a conflict of relief but also distaste towards Gordon as he is a stranger. aftermath/epilogue is spent Alyx trying to get to know Gordon and not feel this way towards him, also revealing Gordon's feelings on being deified himself.

Breen was taken by the G-man during the events of rescas. Hes pretty certain he is the one abusing G-man's power not the other way around (being a puppet/pawn to G-man), sure he is "using" G-man get him out of various situations. he is full of himself in every way lol

Breen was offered a possible future of the world not being destroyed by the Combine due to submitting, and with G-man taking him out of the dangers of the rescas, Breen fulfills this “destiny” in this sense.

Breen is able to make connection with combine by way of the US government due to his involvement with the Black Mesa incident and being the supposed only surviving member known to man. fills in holes.

CHAPTER 1 OUTLINE - Fault Line

Gordon arrives at the train station after exiting stasis. He goes through the same motions until reaching the gate, where he's stopped for a moment.

In the background, Barney has attempted to get him into an interrogation room but Gordon is swapped up, leading him away with someone else. There is notable hesitance from barney in the background but gordon is aimlessly following orders with the strangers

In the room, he is threatened lightly, but the cps are more confused by the inability to find any information on him. They discuss him simply going off to Nova because they don't want to deal with it

They ask to clarify his name, force him to write it down so they can look into it. They make gordon wait and sit there and as they figure out who he is, they agree gordon can be released, and that they are going to relay their information to the citadel for further verification

Gordon exits into the city alone, exploring on his own accord. It is assumed Barney is still trying to reach Gordon after this, but Gordon does not witness this clearly, only getting vague glimpses at a CP eyeing him.

Gordon manages to rest for the night, though not very well, until awoken rudely by CP dragging him out, stating hes being transferred out of the area and directly to the citadel for questioning.

He is being led to Breen, and through the journey upwards, the guards purposefully shield Gordon from witnessing much- including shielding his eyes from Stalkers on the way up, but a few details are noted.

At his office, Gordon meets Breen formally. Gordon recalls him in a general sense, not having known him well at Black mesa because he wasnt very present. Breen greets him warmly, surprised by his survival, and plays off the idea that everyone else at black mesa died.

He gives a very brief history of whats gone on- that the combine took over and that as the only surviving member of the incident, he took it into his own hands to be responsible, and that they were working with the aliens in order to keep the humans alive, that the combine provided many advancements for humans.

Gordon is incredibly unsure on what to think, but breen provides a place for him to stay in the tower and he takes it, having little place to go now (and it is better i guess). Judith mossman leads him out and explains some more things to him- stating that Gordon would be valuable in his knowledge of the rescas events.

She sets him up in his room which is admittedly just a barracks for soldiers, contained to just himself. There is a tv playing breencasts along with a narrow window.

Security Chief Calhoun is the chief of security at Black Mesa, but he’s rarely seen by anyone, much less the security team and the administrator. He watches over Gordon, as well as a few other characters of interest, as they make haste and escape from Black Mesa. He takes the place of G-Man.

  Agent Michael is a government agent who’s moved to Black Mesa, after having been at rival company Aperture Science for a good 13 years. He keeps all lawsuits and OSHA violations under wraps; he prefers to do things nonviolently, but he does have formal training with a number of firearms. He takes the place of Barney.
