Obscure Animation Subject #68: Futari Daka

Based on the manga series by Kaoru Shintani, the show was produced by Kokusai Eiga-sha in its final production before bankruptcy. The series is directed by Tokizō Tsuchiya, and aired on Fuji TV from September 20, 1984 to June 21, 1985.

When Taka Sawatari and his mother were heading home after having dinner, they were attacked by a motorcycle gang. They got saved by a mysterious young man. The next day, Sawatari learned that that young man was a professional racer who has the same first name, Taka Toujou.

In a race, Sawatari loses control when entering a curve, nearly killing Toujou. After the event, the two become rivals as they compete against each other with their racing skills.

The series originally aired on a 7:30 PM Thursday timeslot, but that has changed twice.

The series didn’t get a proper ending due to the financial issues the studio had and was cancelled. But it did get some overseas attention as the show aired in France in 1990, but the final four episodes didn’t air in the country. Yeah a shame this show is forgotten nowadays.

There's another Hoover in the Shintaniverse!?

As you know, my favorite character from Kaoru Shintani's fighter pilot manga, Area 88, is Hoover Kippenburg. Imagine my surprise when I learned that an alternate universe version of Hoover appears in another Shintani manga, Futari Daka ("Twin Hawks" or "Two Hawks"). Mickey Simon and Roundel also make cameos!

Whereas Hoover Kippenburg was a West German fighter pilot in Area 88, the Kazeha Hoover of Futari Daka was a Japanese gearhead and motorcycle racer. I couldn't find anything about the character on English language websites, nor could I find English or Japanese scans of the manga. Thus, I wandered around some Japanese websites, making sense of them using Google Translate. From what I've cobbled together, I don't think I'll like this version of Hoover, because Shintani puts him in what sounds like an unhealthy romantic relationship toward the end of the manga. My investigation of Futari Daka halted as quickly as it began.

Still, it's interesting to learn that Shintani repackages characters, creating AU versions of them in different franchises.

Also, Hoover in a tank top looks so very wrong to me.

Bon Destiny by The Noisy Siblings (Hiroki Takahashi and Yuki Kaida) - *Probably Poorly Transliterated* Romaji Lyrics

I’m not by any means fluent in Japanese, but after searching repeatedly for the (English and Romanized) lyrics to Bon Destiny for years and not being able to find anything ever, I decided to do something about it. I don’t have an English translation, but I do have a very rough transliteration (AKA me listening and typing what I hear) for this song. Of course this might not be as accurate as it would be coming from someone who actually speaks Japanese, but if you’re interested in having something you can read and kind of understand, here.

El autor fue un asistente de Leiji Matsumoto y dibujó los Manga de Futari Daka, Buttobi!! CPU y más. 

El autor de Manga Kaoru Shintani anunció en su cuenta oficial de Twitter que él se esta tomando una pausa de sus actividades de dibujar Manga.  from drawing manga. El anuncio coincidió con su 66 cumpleaños, y justo cuando terminó el manuscrito para el último capítulo de su actual Manga Christie: London Massive, Él afirma en su publicación que va a probar suerte en cosas nuevas.

Shintani debuto como autor en 1972 con su Manga Kyuuketsuki Oiya!? en la revista Ribbon Zoukan de Shueisha. Él se caso con la también autora de Manga Kayono Saeki en 1973, y comenzó a trabajar como asistente de Leiji Matsumoto ese mismo año. 

Él lanzó su iconico Manga de Area 88 en la revista Shounn Big Comic de Shogakukan en 1979, y después lanzó su Manga de Futari Daka en la revista Weekly Shounen Sunday en 1981. Otros de sus notables trabajos incluyen Cleopatra D.C., Desert Rose y Buttobi!!
