1978年、カネボウのキャンペーンソングとしてミッシェル・フュガンの名曲「愛の歴史」を前田憲男によるボサノヴァアレンジでリリースした「Mr.サマータイム」。

ピエール・ドラノエの書いた原曲リリックのイメージを壊さないように美しい日本語詞を書いたのは竜真知子。

歌うのは日本を代表するコーラスグループのサーカス。

出だしの甘いフリューゲルホルンの音色と、全体にわたって鳴り続けるガットギターのリズムカッティングが大人なボサノバの香り全開でとっても素敵。

編成とアレンジはオリジナルに近いけど、原曲と同様に転調してからはストリングスが最前線で活躍するところは、いかにも60～70年代フランスのイージーリスニング風なアレンジセンスでたまらない。

ここからがテストに出るほど重要なエピソード。

嘘のような話ですが、この曲は当初コーセー化粧品のCMソングに使われる予定で、曲名は「Mr.メモリー」でレコーディングも終了していたのですが、何があったのかカネボウのキャンペーンソングに変更。

（マジですか！そんなことあり得るのですか！？笑）

それが、実話なんです。

この年はコーセーがキャンペーンを張っていないので、何かお家の事情があったのだと思います。

（コーセーもセンスいいコマーシャルいっぱいやってたので残念！）

そして、カネボウはその年の夏のキャッチコピーが「Mr.サマータイム」と決まっていたので、当初のタイトル「Mr.メモリー」を「Mr.サマータイム」に変更することとなり、改めてレコーディングし直すこととなったそうです。

（凄い話ですね！笑）

この前田憲男アレンジの死ぬほどセンスのいい曲はオリコンで1位を獲得して、日本レコード大賞の編曲賞を受賞。

同年の紅白にも出場し、総売り上げ枚数は100万枚。

資生堂の「時間よ止まれ」矢沢永吉、「燃えろいい女」ツイストが参戦したこの年の壮絶な化粧品戦争は、カネボウの大勝利で幕を閉じました。

When staff unions live off the backs of union members, they no longer defend them, they scare them into staying in the union. If employees have bad working conditions, then they’ll join the union to improve them, they think. This technique doesn’t work, as they now represent only 5% of the payroll.
