We did it!

The Lebanon Valley Java Journey is officially over…for us! We went to all 12 locations and tried what they had to offer, well, sort of. PSM tried some of the specialty drinks, I had a chai latte at each place, and we both tried the food offerings, well, PSM didn’t at the last one, but for the most part, we did the Java Journey proud! We were at the last place and PSM said, we could do this…

I took these exclusive Remembering Retail photos 3/29/25 at the now-former Huddle House location in Frystown, PA as part of the Flying J truck stop there.

Situated along Interstate 78 at the Lebanon/Berks County line between Harrisburg and Allentown, this is the only Huddle House I've ever seen up north.

My understanding of Huddle House is that they're a lesser-known version of Waffle House. Breakfast-centric, the Huddle House story began in Decatur, GA in 1964 with John Sparks looking to provide a 24-hour eatery named after the act of huddling in football.

As perfect as that is for a truck stop, this one closed on 2/25/25. There's still a Subway and a Cinnabon at this Flying J, and there's work starting to fill this space. I'm not sure what yet will be moving into this one.

There are 21 states with Huddle House locations, and there's one still in Pennsylvania right across the border from Morgantown, WV in Mount Morris. I vaguely remember seeing them down South a few times. There were 272 Huddle House locations in April of 2024, that's down to 252 today. The most Huddle Houses can be found in Georgia (59), Alabama (37) and Kentucky (24).

Interestingly, the Huddle House story intertwines with Perkins, another beleaguered breakfast-centric restaurant chain. Huddle House acquired Perkins in September of 2019, but Huddle House was then transferred in May of 2020 to Ascent Hospitality Management.
