My brother brought my mum and me along with one of my nephews to Andy’s Grill Express near where he was staying. The stall’s front is pretty narrow that it had to display the menu on the side wall. We went for their Super Combo Deal as it offered the best value. Ordered freshly squeezed Orange and Watermelon Juices to quench the thirst.

My nephew and I had Ribeye Steaks (2 for S$22) which is served on top of a bed of fries and crispy salad and drizzled in brown gravy. While it isn’t the best ribeye I had, it was juicy and tender plus the portion was big.

Mum and my brother went for the Fish & Chips (2 for S$14.90). It came with the same sides of fries and salad plus a squeeze of tartar sauce on the side. Mum gave me a piece of the fish which was well seasoned and crispy.

Your Health is Better Series - Dealing with Diabetes (4)
One of the most important tips for managing diabetes is limiting sugary foods and beverages, as they can cause significant spikes in blood glucose levels. Managing blood sugar is crucial for people with diabetes because high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) can lead to long-term complications like heart disease, nerve damage, and kidney problems. In this explanation, we’ll explore how sugary foods and drinks affect blood glucose and why it’s important to limit them.
What is Blood Glucose?
Blood glucose, or blood sugar, is the amount of sugar found in your blood. When you eat foods that contain carbohydrates, they are broken down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps move glucose from the blood into the cells, where it is used for energy. In diabetes, the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or doesn’t use it effectively, leading to higher-than-normal blood glucose levels.
How Do Sugary Foods and Beverages Affect Blood Glucose?
Sugary foods and drinks are quickly digested and absorbed by the body, causing a rapid increase in blood glucose levels. These foods usually have a high glycemic index (GI), which means they cause blood sugar to rise quickly after eating. This can be particularly problematic for people with diabetes, as their bodies struggle to manage these spikes in glucose effectively.
Sugary Beverages: Drinks like soda, fruit juices, and energy drinks often contain large amounts of sugar in liquid form, which is absorbed rapidly by the body. Since liquids empty from the stomach more quickly than solid foods, the sugar from beverages enters the bloodstream faster, causing a rapid rise in blood glucose levels.
Sugary Foods: Foods like candy, cakes, cookies, and pastries are also high in refined sugars and carbohydrates. These foods are digested quickly, leading to a sharp increase in blood glucose. Even seemingly healthy options, like flavored yogurts or granola bars, can contain added sugars that contribute to blood sugar spikes.
Why Is It Important to Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks?
For individuals with diabetes, consuming sugary foods and beverages in excess can lead to several problems:
Blood Sugar Spikes: When you eat or drink foods high in sugar, your blood glucose levels can rise quickly and significantly. For people with diabetes, this means their bodies have to work harder to bring the levels back down. If blood glucose levels remain high for too long, it can damage organs and tissues, increasing the risk of complications like heart disease, kidney disease, and nerve damage.
Insulin Resistance: Consistently consuming sugary foods can worsen insulin resistance, a condition where the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin. As insulin resistance increases, the body has a harder time regulating blood sugar, making diabetes management more challenging.
Unstable Blood Sugar: Eating too much sugar can lead to unstable blood sugar levels. This can cause fluctuations between high and low blood glucose, leading to symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. Over time, these fluctuations can make it harder to manage your condition effectively.
How to Limit Sugary Foods and Beverages:
To help regulate blood sugar, it’s important to make mindful choices about the foods and drinks you consume. Here are some tips:
Choose Whole Foods: Focus on whole, unprocessed foods like vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These foods help maintain stable blood sugar levels.
Read Labels: Be aware of added sugars in packaged foods and beverages. Look for terms like “high-fructose corn syrup,” “corn syrup,” or “sucrose,” which indicate added sugar content.
Drink Water: Water is the best beverage for managing blood sugar. If you want flavor, try adding a slice of lemon or cucumber to your water. Avoid sugary drinks like soda, juice, and sweetened teas.
Limit Desserts and Sweets: If you have a sweet craving, choose healthier alternatives like fruit, which contains natural sugars along with fiber and nutrients. You can also opt for sugar-free or low-sugar desserts in moderation.
Balance Your Meals: Make sure each meal includes a balance of carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats to help slow the absorption of sugar and keep blood glucose levels stable.

PSA: i keep seeing posts about staying cool in extreme heat that include advice like "gatorade is bad actually!" and "don't drink fruit juice it'll just dehydrate you!" and neither of these are true!
regarding fruit juice: there's apparently a misconception that Any Sugar At All will dehydrate you, and that's simply not true. yes, sugar will make you pee more when consumed in large amounts, but 1) the natural sugar in fruits won't do this to you 2) great news! a lot of fruit juices exist without any added sugar in them! 3) honestly even having a glass of the fruit juice with added sugar won't completely dehydrate you as long as you're also drinking water throughout the day. if its hot you deserve a cold treat of a drink!!! can't go wrong with fruit juice!!!
regarding gatorade: maybe this isn't an every day drink, but guess what: if it's 110F/40C or hotter outside, and you don't have AC, or you're moving around a lot outside of the AC, and you're sweating buckets: that's when you drink a gatorade.
gatorade exists to replenish all the electrolytes (salt) and glucose (sugar) that you sweat out. YES it is meant for athletes to drink during intensive work outs and not necessarily for people who aren't doing that kind of exercise. BUT GUESS WHAT! when you're sweating buckets because you had to walk to the bus in extreme heat, that's intensive exercise. please feel free to drink a gatorade after that! that's its intended use case!!!!
no: neither of these drinks should be a total replacement for water. but drinking a lot of water and then treating yourself to a fruit juice with lunch is a good idea!!! drinking a gatorade becuase you just had to walk for 20 minutes in the heat is a good idea!!!
Please Stop Spreading Misinformation About Drinks!!! It's fine if you drink things that aren't water!!!! Yes you should probably always be drinking water but drinking something else As Well isn't going to hurt you!!!! okay!!!! its fine!!!!!!
honestly so long as you are consistently getting Any (non-alcoholic) fluids in you, you're doing great!!!!!! okay!!!! i love you stay safe <3
#also: drinking A Soda or A Coffee isn't going to completely dehydrate you if you're drinking other fluids tbqh!!!#its fine!!!!! its fine!!!!!#drinks#heat#dehydration#this post exists because i'm mad at misinfo but also#this is for my homies who hate the taste of water and struggle to stay hydrated#because people have told them over and over again You Must Absolute Drink Water And Nothing Else and so they just don't drink anything#listen!! hey!!! whoever told you that was lying!!!!#drinking Any Fluids At All (yes even with caffeine!!) is better than Not Drinking Anything#please hydrate!!!! it's okay if that hydration isn't water!!!!#honestly i tried to be extremely non confrontational in this post but im pretty sure i've seen people suggest flavored water packets#but say no fruit juice ever. and that's insane.#it's all fluids baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#so long as you are drinking fluids you are combatting dehydration#YES water is the best option HOWEVER. if you drink things that aren't water that's also okay! i promise!!!!!!!!

I never saw this beverage in my life but it is SCRUMPTIOUS!

I found this and 3 other flavors at the corner store up the block. They all have large chunks of fruit floating inside. This one has pineapples. I wanna try them all.
Off-topic but I found some bottles of my favorite cleaning product there too called Mistolín. They had the hard-to-find Gardenia scent. That scent and Floral scent are from my favorite times of my childhood, so when I clean with them on bright sunny days, everything feels just right. 🩵
