The front porch

I've been spending most of my Summer in this modest space, this little outdoor room.

The table is at the front window of this humble, now restored house. I built this simple porch in front of it. Off to the right is the little lake, and beyond the orchard, there, is the great lake. The forested ravines are behind me. Off to the left, across the road, are orchards, corn and cows. Just to the left is a row of cedars. Sitting here, I am barely visible to any of the rare passers-by. Here, I revel in the privacy. I read, I write, I listen to the farm machines, I listen to songbirds, I meditate and I exercise.

The rising sun hits this space first, so it's the first space I hit in the cool of the morning to warm facing into the light with a hot cup of coffee and boiling news on the phone. Mid-day, it's a cool, shaded respite from heat and work, a channel for breezes, a spot for a simple lunch and then a nap. I use the deck for a mattress and a short chunk of 4x4 leftover from my work for a pillow. I've now just finished dinner here, a meal more satisfying than the police procedural I also just finished, a type of beach read I always think I might be okay to surrender to in the Summer but never find good enough to relieve me of the guilt or resentment for wasted time.

Over the past couple of years, this has also become a rich and rewarding community space. I've been very happy to host pre-dinner cocktails with long-time friends staying at the nearby resort, and other friends who've found large properties here, similarly dedicated to rural preservation.

I've been very pleased that this little table – a folding card table brought out in the Spring and elevated with a tablecloth, a bowl to hold it down in the winds, and sometimes a small vase of field flowers – is a place also of connection, deliberation, and resolution. The farmer with most of the big apple orchards sat here and, over a beer, told me surprising stories of his life and this place and offered mediation in a conflict. The cattleman across the road sat here a couple of times over the past couple of weeks and, as we compared land apps, looked over satellite images, and reviewed surveys, told me of stories of land, cows and crops, and the intimacies of my neighbors. The guy who mows my fields sits here, well, no, stands here and tells me stories that help me understand history, and family, and business here.

I reflect on my career as architect wondering if I can find a more significant space that I've designed.

following your friends back to the convertible car after being too much time on someone's from university party, you heard some voices of the same guys that were making fun of warren for talking to you and being assholes to you for rejecting them, they didn't even know that you didn't rejected him and already has your heart pouding for the cute boy with his puppy brown eyes and weed loser act.

feeling your confidence boost by they mumbling and your usual high self esteem, you slowed your steps to the car, thinking of doing some shit to "boost" warren's reputation around there. looking at one of your friends that just shut the backseat door shut and open the window, you asked loud enough just so her could hear it "warren still outside?"

"yeah i think he's gonna throw something on the frontporch trash." she said looking behind you and pointing.

you smiled to her then suddenly turn your body around quickly, now seeing warren with his back turned to you, walking to the front stairs before the frontporch.

"hey! warren!" you shouted, making him stops on middle of the stairs and turn around looking at you, he has a tiny smile and frowned brows in curiosity, waiting your response. "yeah?"

you give two steps back, feeling the cold of the passanger door hit your thighs and calves. and right now your voice not only catched his attention but from the group of stupid boys that were mocking him there too, he surely didn't care looking so unfazed with they comments, he only got bothered when they tried envolve your name in the middle of those kinda of jokes.

you didn't care that much of them either, it was kinda of normal see stupid guys around those university parties - and well, anywhere -, but it sucked anyways having those kind of people gossiping around about a person you started liking so much.

"can i give you a spoiler pg-13?" you said referring to the subject of movies you had talked about before, resulting in you scheduling a meeting at your house for a movie marathon on the weekend. already smiling mischievously, you put your weight on your left high heel and your hands in the back pockets of your short jeans.

"uuh what do you m-" before he could finish his reasoning your just lift up your glitter top with no bra underneath, flashing him your pretty breasts and everyone that was behind him. including those group of stupid guys that were gossiping and mumbling around bout warren's name, and some girlies talking on the upstairs balcony and paying attention to what were you doing and saying.

warren's eyes widened while his mouth dropped to the floor with his most surprised expression taking only seconds to his face got all flustered and pink. everyone near started screaming and cheering exciteds, some looking with their shocked faces and others with judgement, but the most louders was mainly your group of girlfriends behind you on the convertible, starting laughing outrageously and hyping you up. "yeaahhh get it girl!!"

afterwards you pulled your top back down, giggling shamelessly and turning your back to enter the passanger seat. while yourself in and buckled up, you turn your head to his direction, that still was freezed on the same place and face, and blowed him a kiss and shouting again "consider it as a spoiler to our weekend warren!"

when your friend started the engine and driving the car away of the front of the house, you gestured a bye to him, lefting all the attention and screams to warren deal with. feeling yourself victorious of doing such freaky thing, showing off to those scumbags a good motive to gossip about, besides, knowing now that you were only from warren, and soon hopes to be always like this.

warren blinked looking blank for some seconds, loading what just happened into his mind while some people laughed at his flustered face. his body got all heated and turned on so quickly that looked pathetic, so he poorly tried to hide his growing bulge, giving a little bump when felt a hand on his back, instantly looking to his side to see spencer by his side.

"wow man, aren't ya the weirder anymore now... you has a girlfriend now, and she's... the coolest, y'know?" he said watching the convertible car disappearing into the distance. turning his head to gaze to warren's with a smug face and a smirk resting on his lips, giving a little shake on his friend's shoulder.

"s-shit ur saying? shut the fuck up motherfucker!" warren exclaimed embarrassed, punching spencer's shoulder. only making his friend burst in laugh, and inevitably, doing the same.

damn girl. you just gonna be the end of him by doing that.
