In Kolkata, a 93-year-old residence is now a boutique bed-and-breakfast, but all around it are crumbling historic homes.In Delhi, the rooftop Walled City Café overlooks a crumbling and neglected Shahjahanabad. In Mumbai, a once-iconic mill now hosts yuppie beer-guzzlers and theatre lovers, but most of the mills in the city stand forlorn.Still, it’s a start. “Adaptive reuse projects become an example for others to emulate,” says conservation architect Kirtida Unwalla. In south Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda art district, she points out, what started as isolated incidences of heritage reuse have turned into a flood of cafés, restaurants, retail stores and art spaces housed in bits of history.Unwalla helmed one such transformation — when the high-street brand Zara moved into the five-storey, 110-year old Ismail Building that now lights up the street it’s on.

But it’s happening.A decrepit 90-year-old four-storey house in Kolkata was recently in the spotlight after its owner put it up for sale, but only to buyers who committed to not tearing it down.“The enhanced value of a restored and adapted structure is yet to be fully appreciated in India, as it is in the UK, Europe and even the US,” Unwalla says.

Built as an orphanage in 1876, this Bengaluru building now houses the boutique store Cinnamon. ‘We picked the space because restoring it would be a way to remember Bangalore as it was,’ says owner of the brand Radhika Poddar.Money is a key factor, of course. Restoration, renovation and maintenance are significantly more expensive for old structures that typically need specific types of wood, roofing and tile, and need near-constant attention. The new tenants then take longer to turn profitable or make back their investment.“Big investments in restoration also often mean that the demography of a place changes,” says conservation architect Aishwarya Tipnis. “To make up for the money put in, if one runs a café, it has be a high-end one. This leads to more such places in the area, often changing a middle-class neighbourhood into a gentrified one. So one needs to ask what we are preserving,” she says.It doesn’t help that the government offers virtually no incentives, instead turning red tape into another deterrent.As Tipnis puts it: “We could’t really have a gallery like London’s Tate Modern or Paris’s Musee d’Orsay because the flexibility of using an abandoned power station or railway station for something so different simply does not exist here.”Delhi: Coffee, literature, history...On the first floor of a 200-year-old old haveli in Old Delhi, is a café that looks out over the Jama Masjid and the sprawl of Shahjahanabad.

When we were halfway through we realised that this nice open space on the first level would be a good place for people to meet, hangout and eat. It reminded us of the beautiful cafés of Istanbul.”The building had what she calls an ‘Anglo-Muslim’ ambience, with fireplaces, chimneys and a courtyard. It is now a popular venue, especially for literary and cultural events.Not far from WCC, is the splendid Haveli Dharampura — a grand home from 1887, with intact marble jaalis and wide courtyard, now a luxury hotel. It’s owned by the BJP MP Vijay Goel, a heritage enthusiast and activist. “The idea was to restore a part of it as a museum to set an example for others to emulate,” says his daughter, Vidyun, who handles marketing for the space.Once restoration began, the spacious rooms and corridors seemed perfect for a hotel. Work that was planned for six months went on for over six years; the hotel opened its doors in 2016. In addition to rooms and dining, it offers Kathak and classical music performances. “Turning it into a hotel has really helped with funding of the upkeep of a structure like this,” says Vidyun.Kolkata: Check in, check it outThis building was saved as a result of another interesting urban heritage phenomenon — the heritage walk.

( Samir Jana / HT Photo ) The founders of Calcutta Walks came upon it while researching a new walk around Radha Kanta Jew Street. “There it stood, with its green lattice shutters, arched windows and generous wide balconies,” says Anirban Dutta. “We keep coming across such buildings on our walks around the city, and most of them are in a shambles. We decided to do something about this one because it had so much potential — the ornate facade, wide road in front, relaxed and friendly neighbourhood.” The plan was to turn it into a bed-and-breakfast, “because, you know, we’re already in touch with tourists all the time”.The 90-year-old structure needed much more work than they anticipated. “It was hard to raise the funds,” he says. The restoration took two years, with artisans coming in from Murshidabad to work with chuna-surkhi or lime concrete. The place opened to guests in May 2018. It will take at least until 2023 to break even, Dutta estimates. “But we hope more people will see that it is possible to work on these beautiful buildings and not tear them down.”Goa: Beer at a millThis was a project that began with architect and heritage conservationist Raya Shankwalker deciding he wanted to find an old structure and make it an example of adaptive reuse.

While the structures are open-plan, with smart glass façades, the cast-iron factory equipment works as a reminder of the past.“We are going for a mixed use development approach that will have residences, offices and a five-star hotel too,” Gupta says.Bengaluru: browse with history Cinnamon, a clothing and home décor brand, specialises in products with an Indian aesthetic but contemporary design. When it came time to move from their leased store in Bengaluru, they decided to try and find a space that reflected their identity.“We came across this dilapidated bungalow at Ulsoor, in 2013. Restoration took about 10 months,” says Radhika Poddar, founder and owner of Cinnamon.Originally built as an orphanage in 1876, Poddar says she picked the space because restoring it would be a way to remember Bangalore as it was and maintain a piece of its heritage.The design suited her too — a courtyard perfect for a café; the rooms arranged around it ideal to showcase product lines. What I’m trying to say is looking up at the skyscrapes against that sky sharp as outline ceiling of day peeking through the glass and metal and names in large block fonts the city is a new one to me because it’s not my city; it’d be yours, if you were here, or the one who lived here, or if you were visiting [again]; I map a city that you’d make yours or would be yours by those pathways; if the city were a brain the roads my feet trace would be the neural pathways and the shops I linger in the lit-up places where activity congregates, concentrates. I am, everywhere, now, mapping a list of places you should go, if you were to come [there]. Here is a cafe you’d enjoy, laugh at the neon lines of; this building which houses the record shop you liked most when you were here that it’s since moved to a new hub of creative crafts, including a shop for coding lessons, a shop space an empty room with a single neon-built house with a sign for Design Week, and most importantly, a graff art place upstairs from the record shop; this is where your boss would like to set up office if one transplanted the studio from London to Singapore; the list goes on, and on, and on...

I am mentally curating an exhaustive, ever-expanding list of cool places you should check out, a personalised experience of recommendations around the cities I inhabit or spend time in tailored to what I recall as your tastes. There’s this one mural in Brunswick in Melbourne that’s Tribe stretched across it, a whole tribute homage on a wall that you should really see. What I wanted to say was, now, it seems, stripping back, lost the rings, dressing in a single layer sundress slip, slippers, bare face, unglamorous - nearly entirely unadorned. When I go back to Melbourne I’ll be scouring for a record player. Weird things, weird things. I think I saw your turntables behind the counter of Analog, was it a/were they Technics?

There’s this one track that set me off, again, you see. I heard it and it was one of those tracks that just - hit a spot inside you that feels like the centre of that feeling, and the track’s an outpouring that’s the stuff of you would sound like, near exactly, ya dig? A little like hearing World’s End Rhapsody at 5 that morning, or Flume’s Warm Thoughts for the first time like a revelation in a different room in a small town in Norway at 19. The sound of a - that euphoria of meeting someone and falling in love, you get me. Zakochanie/forelsket. You’re the type of girl that I was dying to meet. God, does he sound impassioned about it. In the background, triumphant and joyous music. It’s an announcement, a herald. He says it again. That’s the hook - the thing that keeps you. Yeah, you’re the type of girl I was dying to meet, he reasserts.

Anyway, yeah, now I’m the one about to go giving out love songs in hip-hop form playing this for my girl with a giant geeky grin or something. This’ll be me dedicating music or sending it over to someone to say how I feel about them. You did that, moved my hand. I look like you. You said that thing about hip-hop and culture connecting people. I walked into your room and now I’ve taken you home with me, into me. Funny thing. Like you’re the needle and I’m the wax. And every revolution you dig deeper in.

That DJ in the shop from 2 years ago, Dre? I asked if it was the cap that he recognised me by; he said maybe, or maybe it was the way it was worn, backwards. You know, (since I’m here, and while I’m talking, guess what) I got over at Analog - that Tribe/Pharcyde mash-up, Bizarre Tribe, that you got two years ago, the exact one that’s in the picture of us that’s up on Choice’s Insta. I guess I got it for sentimental reasons - well, and also the fact that it’s kinda rare now, I think.

I’m beginning to wonder how much - how much you in me I can give. You score me so it’s only natural, but I look at a picture of myself, and my hands say you to whoever looks. Still, showing up in ink, in expression - feels natural. What I do, what I keep, what I wear, what I etch. A close friend of the time said then you were a passing ship, but everything passes; and what passes still makes impressions.

So I’m there, or there I am, kneeling, again, on my knees on the floor, again. (I’m often offered a stool or seat while sifting, but I don’t tend to use them.) Funny how you get me in that sit of my body, so easily, I don’t even notice - an automatic, even an act of joy. You know what I remember most about Kentish Town with you? The project 91/4 is located facing a highway on a Peripheral sector of sec -4 Panchkula. It is a corner plot in an urban row house measuring 550 square yards.

The Client being a hotelier wanted a house to be built for a small family of four, a couple, two teenage children, occasionally visiting parents.

Being a hotelier and having multiple hotels, Client wanted to keep the house private and most of the socializing activities would be out of the house. The House is primarily is designed around the day to day activities of occupants.

The Ground floor consists of 2 bedrooms, one for guests and one for day room. The House is laid out around a long central courtyard. Courtyard also shields the privacy of formal and informal areas.

The formal area has a connection from the dining area which makes the guest access dining directly and also help serve the guest as a service door.

The kitchen living and dining form a long connected space in the north western part of the house, which keeps the occupants together most of a time. The corner road being narrow, long slit windows uniformly spaced on the living wall letting in the sunlight keeping the privacy from the street.

The Main bedrooms of the house is on the first floor in which one of the master bedrooms occupies the entire front of the house with a spacious closet and terrace along with a suite size room. If one looks on to the main courtyard which houses an art installation, it is a specifically designed act which offers views for strategic points around the courtyard. It has a water element which activates the courtyard and spaces around it.

The rear Bedroom and space outside the room acts as a lounge space for occasional closed families get together. The space is Cozy to house 8 people with a small console Bar and a home theatre.

The Bedroom is designed specifically like a lounge room which could have different age groups or the women of the house who prefer to sit in a separate space during the social gathering which is a part and culture of the family.

The main living floors are raised by 3’ taller making height about 13’ average below false ceiling. The increased height makes the spaces look larger compared to conventional heights. They also help passive comfortable spaces keeping warm air on top, helping in Indian climate.

The second floor primarily houses domestic help quarters and the main store of the house .The terrace splits into two levels. The higher one houses all the services and the lower one is kept to use as a terrace with plantation. It forms a nice space during morning in summer and evening day for winter sun. The materials used primary needed lower maintenance keeping in as a view with the low frequency of the use of the terrace.

The façade primarily is bold and minimal. The angular wall in the façade is reflection to make the elevation look broader than it is. Muted Colors such as white natural stone, Grey ceramic tiles and metallic copper finish blend to create a subtle contrast for the house.

The interior of the house has been planned to enhance the capture of sunlight with a subtle and muted color palette. The sunlight has been used as a major material along with all others, be it hard wood or soft furnishing.

The mandir is positioned next to the courtyard wrapped in fabric around wooden rafters creating a soft and severe puja space of monolithic quality. The use of distinct chandeliers and art works has been planted in all the space to bring life in the built volumes.

In all, the architecture eclecticism has been carried out to enhance the transitional relationship of space in a calm and serene yet playing boldly at focal location, to derive the balance between soul and silence of the space, generating a homely yet ecstatic look of overall feel satisfying thereby client’s taste and artistic nature of architects.

Without wanting to sound too judgemental, when we first saw this front garden, we could understand why our client had called us in. Sitting in front of the 1960s bungalow was a lawn, a driveway and not much else.

Castle Cove sits over the Harbour Bridge on the North Shore, 10 kilometres from Sydney’s CBD. Developed around the middle of last century, it’s very much a modern family suburb, with winding streets snaking out around the Middle Harbour area and lots of water views if you live on the right side of the street. It’s not exactly what you would call inner-city living, but it is still only a 15-minute drive into town.

As well as living in a mid-century house and suburb, our client is heavily drawn towards Palm Springs architecture and LA design, so right from the start this was our direction. This brief excited us, as I have always loved the strong structure of architectural planting, and we could see the possibilities for renewal right from the start.

In terms of structure, changing architectural details helped cement a more mid-century vibe. Narrow columns supporting the front of house were removed and more substantial pillars clad in sandstone were installed in their place. Ceramic tiles were replaced with crazy-pave sandstone, flowing around the front landing and tying it all together.

The same stone was used for the garden path connecting to the front door and the newly widened and resurfaced driveway. There was no reason for any lawn to remain, but the driveway was essential and for practical purposes needed widening once the parking overflow lawn was removed.

Given that the existing architecture wasn’t pure mid-century modern, I wanted to see a fuller garden rather than a minimalistic scheme. My inspiration came not predominantly from Palm Springs, but from time spent in Morocco and, in particular, the gardens in Marrakech. I love the combination of softer palms and grey foliage with edgier cacti and succulents.

We had fun developing the planting scheme for this project. We wanted to anchor the front of the house with a few key specimens that suggest someplace else straight away. The palette is a combination of striking, hard-edged foliage, mixed in with softer specimens, mounding and clumping forms, and a touch of Mediterranean influence. Advanced dwarf date palms combined with towering specimens of candelabra tree create a strong contrast with each other and form the main planting structure. Around the base of these are combinations of copper spoons, panda plant, twin flower agave, chalksticks and mounds of natal plum. Advanced olive trees add a softer accent and blend effortlessly with the stronger architectural forms.

The garden sits on the south side of the house, so the areas up close to the dwelling receive little direct sun in winter. This was not a huge issue, but planting needed to be adaptable and handle this winter shade, yet still give the look we wanted. A mass of ubiquitous snake plant sits well here and copes perfectly. Decomposed granite is effective in covering the soil around the planting, acting as a mulch and giving us the arid feel of a hot and dry space. A second group of candelabra trees against the white garage wall is thriving in this south-facing position. Repeated succulents continue the arid theme around the side of the garage, and a mass of Indian hawthorn defines the front boundary to the street.

As well as completely transforming the house, I love how the bold and vibrant planting makes an impact in the streetscape, yet it doesn’t feel out of place. The garden has transformed the house frontage and each time we are there for garden maintenance, we usually have a neighbour passing by commenting on its metamorphosis. 

It has also been a joy to watch the garden mature. Apart from the palms, most of the planting was small when it went in, and I love that surprise when I see the plants responding and growing into their new home.

Public sanitation: Design interventions lead the change

A 2017 report by the WHO found while 74% of the world’s population used at least a basic sanitation service, approximately 2 billion still did not have access to basic sanitation facilities like toilets and latrines – a rather shocking statistic when weighed against the amount of progress you see in the world today. Another highly disconcerting statistic on the subject is from a UNICEF blog, which noted 673 million people still defecate in the open, for example, in street gutters, behind bushes, or open water bodies.

Most urban millennials are unaware of the actual impact human waste and its incorrect disposal has on life across the planet. But trips around the country highlight the glaring shortcomings of India’s public sanitation system and every successive government’s inability to stick to its pre-electoral promises of improvement on that count. Of course, there has been improvement, but the pace at which we are changing isn’t still satisfactory.

In 1999, the Indian government introduced the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) to accelerate sanitation coverage throughout the country, particularly in rural areas. It focused on information and education to generate public demand for sanitation facilities, particularly in schools. The TSC made some progress, but it suffered from its relatively low priority and ineffective deployment of resources. Renamed Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2014, the GOI, armed with a barrage of shocking statistics and a revised mandate, took up the cause with renewed vigour, putting a significant dent in the widespread problem of sanitation.

Where to draw inspiration from?

Japan’s spotless, pop-anime, Kawaii-cute, tech-driven toilets are the stuff of legend, with tourists excitedly using them for that perfect Instagram moment. In fact, the country gained global media attention for its Tokyo Toilet project. Who’d think a public urinal would make for a perfect photo-op?

Switzerland is one of the world’s favourite tourist destinations, has toilets so clean that you can lie down in them. In Paris, the City of Light: a monolithic domed structure stood with a few scattered people standing in a queue in the middle of a Parisian cobble-stoned street. A sliding door whooshed open, revealing a clean albeit soaking wet toilet inside. Pictorial instructions outside the loo read: Post a single use, the entire toilet is sealed and sanitized, and only then access is granted to the next person.

All this was planned and executed before the pandemic took over the world. Also, it is free. It is definitely impressive but is this a viable option for a country like India with its large populace and disparate economic structure?

Modern problems need modern solutions. I spoke to Rohan Chavan, principal architect at RC Architects and the mind behind Lightbox, a one-of-kind public urinal for women with space for social gatherings. Rohan engages with projects and issues related to public and community sanitation, urban design, affordable and low-cost housing, single-family houses, space design, and institutions. His signature approach to design created the Lightbox. This public urinal redefines the concept of ‘restroom��, taking it beyond just being a public toilet and creating a unique, visually attractive space that caters to the peri-urban female population living in and around the Thane region in Maharashtra (India).

Over a short phone interview, Rohan spoke of how, as a designer, he took the initiative to design the Lightbox when Agasti, a social enterprise working in urban sanitation in Mumbai, floated a brief.

Wanting to create something to take to the municipal corporations to add to public sanitation infrastructure, in the hopes that it would be a departure from the largely unappealing ones that already existed, Chavan structured his design around a tree, aware that paucity of space in an urban setting was likely and he would have to work with what he was offered. His design was just as adaptable to smaller or larger spaces and could be tweaked to fit different venues.

Lightbox is covered under the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals at #5 – Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Built around a large tree, the 10’ x 30’ restroom features two urinal blocks each at both ends, with a standard washbasin, a nursing room and a toilet for handicapped or senior citizens. The centre of the restroom was a garden measuring 15’ x 10’ that was meant for various activities like a place to rest, a free gallery to display art for amateur artists, a place for lectures and awareness campaigns, celebrating festivals, seasonal activities and events.

The central garden was a metaphor for spaces where people can sit and relax under a tree in the shade and socialize. The restroom with toilet blocks was fitted with a biodigester to reduce freshwater use and improved waste management. It also included a nursing room and amenities like sanitary pads vending machine and incinerator, CCTV cameras, mobile charging points, and a panic alarm system.

Rohan’s efficient use of modern materials resulted in natural light in the restroom, eased the process to keep the toilets clean and ensured high durability and construction within a specific budget. The societal impact of projects like Lightbox and initiatives like LooCafe was clearly visible. Such unique design interventions represent a burgeoning design collective bent on creating distinctive architectural and spatial perspectives. Some of these are initiatives that governments and municipal corporations across the country must take advantage of and be utilized by the public.

Yes, there have been concentrated moves to build a network of public urinals, with their glossy tiled facades promising better facilities and clean services to its users. But inside, in barely-lit caverns of fetid water, lie disease and stench and the hopelessness of an impoverished citizenry in desperate need of what others might constitute as a fundamental human right.

However, hope now lies in the hands of a few thoughtful individuals contributing ideas and government bodies prioritizing public sanitation in their regular mandates and worldwide recognition of an endemic issue deeply rooted in neglect.

Gurudwara Nirmal Kutiya by Space Race Architects in India has won the WA Award, 34th Cycle for the realized category. The contemporary take of this Gurdwara creates its presence internationally and is visited by a good number of pilgrims having ardent faith in Sikhism from across the globe.

Anciently Sikhism, as a religion did not have any particular symbol of architecture in their spiritual structures like Gurdwara. For instance, where Guru Nanak Dev. Ji (The founder of Sikhism) was born, it was originally a residence and due to lack of knowledge and resources unluckily it couldn’t be restored and halls of Gurdwara came up with elements of architecture that were prevalent at that time mostly derived from Muslim and Persian architecture.

The land, upon which this Gurudwara is built was a graveyard anciently. The same came into notice as skeleton pieces were found while digging the foundation. Today, it plays a vital role in spiritual incarnation as the religious symbol resides here and a positive ambience is spread across. The firm did not charge a penny for designing this project as it was considered as a responsibility of giving back to the society.

Also, the construction activity was supported by Volunteers of nearby areas, who wanted to contribute and add value to the beginning of a new abode of God. It is the vision of the Principal Architect that- after a centenary, when visitors shall pay homage to this sacred place. The contemporary nature of the building and palatial interior design will take them down to the memory lane of the 21st-century architecture of a Gurdwara.

Contemporary elements of the building include cantilever slabs, linear block with travertine look – Vitrified Wall tiles cladding, and a large glass for transparency at the exterior façade. A skeleton Dome marks the pinnacle of the Gurdwara and solely depicts its presence from a distance. There is a splendid fountain erected outside the main entrance directly aligned with the dome above.

A water source is prevalent on both the ends of the sanctuary to witness its reflection and create a sensory vibration for the visitors. One can see the refraction of a floating ‘Nishan Sahib’ (Sacred symbol at the top of a flagpole) with onyx light at the bottom. Further, the building cantilever playfully subtracts the flagpole to cross through it and can be related to the power of God. This flagpole truly depicts the contemporary element of Sikh Architecture being a symbol of triumph and unity.

On a more holistic note, there is a provision of a free kitchen as well. It plays a vital role in Sikhism. It is a common saying that “one can worship well, when one’s stomach is full”. For consuming Langar (food) everybody sits down on the same level which somehow also hints at the ideology that ‘all humans are equal in front of the almighty’. Also, there are window openings created from three sides to invite everybody irrespective of caste, creed, and color.

The interior of the building is beautifully canvased with chandeliers, blind pointed arches at the rear wall, floral-patterned carpet floors, and shades of beige at the embellishments. There is also an opulent use of the diffused sunlight from the east direction that adds spiritual ambience with the interplay of light and shadow. The arches are lifted from the old Gurdwara structures to get a reminiscence of the antique while giving a new touch. In this hall, the arches also have storage, so that the speakers and other instruments can be stored behind them.

El Fenn

El Fenn means 'the artist' in Arabic, referring to the traditionally painted wooden arches above your bed and the shower. This cosy room has a comfortable bed, a pair of colorful club chairs and a violet bathroom with walk-in shower. Just outside the door is the green patio and fountain.

Koufiq

From the green patio, an ancient Indian door opens to this vaulted room, with panels of sculpted plaster. A Rietveld 1930's cupboard and Danish inspired lamps gives it a modern touch, still the materials used on the floors, like Tadelakt and Zellige tiles, are pure traditional craftsmanship. Spend your evening in front of the log fire or taking a warm bath.

Berber

A serene and confortable groundfloor room, decorated in a sober way with blue and red stripes, as you would find in traditionnal Berber houses. Two oriental chairs positioned around a fireplace and the venetian glass bracket lamps make it a mostly romantic place. The bathroom, completely in black and white zellige tiles has a shower and a vintage bathtub and is open towards a private sitting corner in the green courtyard.

Hamra

Named after its deep red floor, the Hamra Room opens onto the canopy of the green courtyard through an entire glass facade. The hand-painted azouak entrance door leads to this cosy room with earth tones and tatoui ceiling. A few steps bring you up to the black tiled bathroom with vintage furniture. The Hamra Room can be made up as a Twin or double-bedded room.

Biban

This sunny room is named after its twelve antique Chinese moucharabieh doors opening up on to the green canopy of the inner courtyard. By using earthy colours we've created a room that brings relaxation to its occupants.

Driba

As the light changes throughout the day the sun plays with the colored glass of the Iranian-inspired doors and windows, making the Driba Room a magical place. The bathroom is golden with an Indian princes depicted on the walls. Floors are in the traditional zellige tiles of all shades of green. In the evening enjoy the last rays of sun on your private balcony and return to the warmth of the fireplace inside.

Koubba

Koubba is the name of the traditional brick vaults, masterpieces of arabo-morish architecture, and this suite has two of them. A private loggia with daybed will lead you to this spacious bedroom. The menzeh bow window opens to the lush greenery of the courtyard. A wooden wall hides a ladder to a sleeping loft mezzanine and the door to the bathroom where you can admire the stars through the sky dome of the bejmat vault. Krishnapuram Palace in Allepey, Kerala

Located in the Alapuzza district of Kerala, the Krishnapuram Palace is a well maintained museum and palace and is one of the popular destinations for the tourist in Alleppey. Maintained by the archeological department of Kerala this magnificent palace has ancient exhibits on display. The design and structure of the museum is the proof that it is very old which has been built as per architectural style of the state. It stands near the Krishnaswami temple in the locality.  There is a lake inside the complex and possess an underground route as an option to escape from enemies. The palace is located left to NH 47 and is near to the Kayamkulam town.

Legend behind

After winning in the battle between Odanad and Travancore in the year 1746, the king of Travancore, Marthanda Varma decided to build this palace. This place was built after demolishing a previous palace that was built there by king of Odanad. The palace was initially started with just one storied building with a pond adjacent to it. There was also an urrapura and a temple in the complex and was managed by the Prime Minister of Kerala. The structure of the building has been designed in the western and traditional style. Presently there is a three storied structure in the building complex which got modified in the year 1950 by The Archeological Department of Kerala according to modern style. It is regarded as a heritage building and a protected testimonial that houses an Archeological Museum.

Structural design on Krishnapuram Palace

The structure totally reflects the Karalee style which is also known as pathinarukettu in South Indian language. The corridors are narrow featured with dormer windows that replicate the Travancore headquarters. Previously the palace was very big in area but gradually it got destroyed and reduced to few acres of land. There stands the main building rebuilt by the archeological department of the state. The place was converted into museum in the year 1950 and artifacts from different locations were brought and kept there.  The structure is built out of lateritic stone, angili wood and rosewood. There are four major open areas in the courtyard centre providing proper ventilation to the palace. Windows and doors are placed in such a way so that natural light could flow through the rooms. Overall 22 rooms are there protected with a verandah in front to ensure wall safety from rains. The special features of the structural complex are the spiral staircases, locks and wooden hinges for doors, polished wooden floors, and roof stuffed with Mangalore tiles that increased its aesthetic beauty. Another attractive feature of the building is the underground pond that extended up to the building which helped in maintaining the temperature of the internal rooms.

Belongings of the Museum

The complex as well as museum now houses different antique pieces that are displayed inside it. Ancient paintings, wooden artifacts, stone sculptors, inscriptions and coins are kept in the treasure house of the museum.  Some other outstanding exhibits are: The kayakulam vaal which is the sword of kayamkulam rajas and its unique characteristics brought it to the museum on display. Both the side of the sword is sharpened which is far more dangerous than any other weapons. The Buddha statue is regarded as an antique statue of the 10th century which was discovered in the fields of Alapuzha district. Gajendra moksham is a mural painting and is the one and only piece in the whole state. Gajendra who is the king of elephants, salutes his lord Vishnu attaining salvation which means moksham.

Useful information on Krishnapuram Palace

The visiting hours starts from 9:30 in the morning till 4:30 in the evening. Duration of 1 to 2 hours is required to fully explore the palace. The entry fee for adults is 10 INR while that of children is 5 INR. Although photography is not allowed but shooting is allowed on providing a charge of 25 INR. The palace is closed on Mondays so avoid going on this day on every week. The nearest railway station is Kayakulam and Kollam is the biggest station that connects all other major railway stations.
