Be Careful What You Wish For Part 2
Title: Be Careful What You Wish For Part 2
Summary: When Jensen and Jared get into a fight, Jensen says some things he doesn’t mean. Those words hold a greater weight when Jensen wakes up in a world that’s not his.
Warnings: None really

Jensen heard the noise of an unfamiliar alarm clock early the next morning. He groaned and reached over to shut it off, but it wasn’t where it normally would be. Jensen opened his eyes and looked at the nightstand but found it empty. He turned to look at the other side and saw that it was on the opposite. He always kept it on Jared’s side, because Jared needed the extra loudness to actually wake him up. Jensen rolled over and turned off the alarm, realizing that the bed felt different.
“What the hell?” Jensen asked, sitting up. The bed linens were different. The comforter wasn’t the blue one that Jared had picked out at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It was a simple grey one. Jensen shook his head. Maybe Jared had changed it before they went to the interview to wash the other one. The radio that was on the alarm clock started to play as his phone vibrated repeatedly. “Carry on Wayward Son” was playing as Jensen picked up his phone.
There were emails, scheduling calendars, and text messages like crazy. Jensen rubbed his eyes and tried to read through some of them. He caught snippets like “Be on set at 12:15”, “there’s an interview at 10:10”. Things like that. Jensen threw his phone on the bed. What was all that. He had never had a schedule like that before.
“What the hell is going on?” Jensen asked himself. He went to the curtains that were hanging up over a window that didn’t look familiar. Nothing looked familiar. And when he opened the curtains and light came flooding in, Jensen could tell that he wasn’t in Canada anymore. Hell, he wasn’t in Texas either.
Because he as looking out over a bright, beautiful beach.
Because that was Malibu out there.
“What the…” Jensen just stared out the large window. He realized it wasn’t just a window, but a sliding door that went out onto a balcony. Jensen opened it and made his way out. It was warm. He could smell the salty air. The sun was just rising and he could see people camped out on the road just outside a large, steel fence. He had no doubt that they were paparazzi. But he was just a TV star. He never really had that much of an issue with them.
He made his way back into the unfamiliar house. Why the hell was he in Malibu? When he went to sleep last night, he had been in Vancouver. He had went to bed angry after a fight with Jared. A stupid fight at that. He made his way out of the bedroom and down some stairs that opened up into a huge, yet unrecognizable, living area. Everything looked so clean, so untouched. Jensen was starting to wonder who could possibly live in a place like this until he saw pictures sitting around and hanging on the walls that confirmed it.
He lived here, if the picture of him, Josh, and Mackenzie had anything to say about it. It was one of his favorite pictures and he couldn’t help but smile when he saw it. But it was the only thing that looked familiar in the place.
“Hello?” Jensen called out. But no one called back. “Jared?” But no answer.
In fact, there was no sign that Jared had ever even been in the house. There were no pictures, no boxes of his favorite cereal sitting around or cases of his favorite beer. There was absolutely no sign that Jared Padalecki lived in the house. And that terrified Jensen.
“Jay?” Jensen called out. “Come on man.” But he still got no answer. Jensen groaned and decided to look for some food. He was starving. But as he opened the fridge, he didn’t find much of anything in it. A box of baking soda, some beer, some water, and a foil plate that Jensen wasn’t even about to mess with.
“This can’t be my house.” Jensen said to himself. There was always food in the house. Leftovers from events and things they would sneak off the set, snacks for the rare days they didn’t have to go in, things for Jensen to grill. But there was nothing, no matter how many cabinets Jensen opened. Jensen sighed and let the cabinet door slam shut.
The doorbell rang then, temporarily distracting Jensen from his food related misery. He went to the front door and opened it, seeing a short girl with purple hair and glasses standing there.
“Good morning Mr. Ackles.” She said, typing away at her phone. She looked up at him. “You’re not ready?”
“Ready?” Jensen asked. “Ready for what?”
“You have an interview with Buzzfeed in like twenty-five minutes, then a promo shoot for the new movie.” She told him. She frowned when he didn’t seem to recognize what she was saying. “Are you feeling okay?” She reached up to touch his cheek to test the temperature, but he pushed her hand away. “How much did you drink last night?”
“What?” Jensen asked. She sighed and walked into the house, heading up to his room.
“You seriously wouldn’t know what to do if you didn’t have me.” She mumbled to herself.
“Who are you?” Jensen asked, watching as she headed towards his room, to the large walk-in closet.
“Josalyn. Your assistant.” She huffed, grabbing out some clothes and throwing them on his bed. “I’ve been your assistant for the past six years Mr. Ackles.”
“I’m sorry.” Jensen said. “I guess I’m just not feeling myself today. And I’m really hungry.”
“God, you’ve got the munchies? Really?” Josalyn asked. “Damn it.” She started typing away at her phone. “I can get the Buzzfeed interview pushed back to tomorrow. But I’m not sure about the promo shoot. Everyone wants those teaser posters before San Diego.” She told him. “And I have a DoorDash order coming in for you. Carbs. You’ve got to soak up whatever is in your system.”
“I, uh, thanks?” Jensen asked. She was moving faster than his brain could register. She headed back downstairs, Jensen following. She pulled out a water bottle from the fridge and shoved it against his chest.
“Drink this.” She commanded. “I want you to drink lots of water this morning. I’ll put in a Peapod order or something. You need real food around here.”
“Yeah, that’s what I’m saying.” Jensen said, a little thankful for the firey girl. She walked up to him and sniffed then, pulling back with a confused look on her face. “What?”
“You don’t smell like booze or pot.” She said. “Please tell me you’re not doing other drugs.”
“What? No.” Jensen said. “I would never…” She stared at him before nodding.
“Well, if you’re getting sick, let me know.” She said. “You have a lot to do that I would need to reschedule.”
“I don’t think I’m getting sick.” Jensen shrugged. Josalyn seemed satisfied.
“Okay, well drink the water, eat the food and sleep for a bit. I’ll check on you before the photoshoot and we’ll see what we can do.” She told him. “Call if you need anything.” She headed towards the door.
“Hey, wait.” Jensen said, stopping her in her tracks. “Where’s Jared?”
“Who?” Josalyn said.
“Jared Padalecki?” Jensen said. Josalyn shrugged.
“I don’t know who that is.” She said as she headed out the door, leaving Jensen standing there, in shock.

7 Charming Craftsman Cottages From Around the U.S.
realtor.com
Built during the 1910s and 1920s in cities as diverse as Tampa, FL, Honolulu, and Seattle, Craftsman cottages are now hitting the century mark.
There may be tiny tweaks by region, such as folding in Spanish-style accents in the Southwest or using sturdy brick in the Northeast, but most tenets of the style remain. They include built-ins, custom woodwork, front porches, and a fireplace. On the exterior, these cottages feature dormers, exposed rafter tails, overhanging eaves, pillars, and double-hung windows.
Craftsman cottages are considered older siblings to bungalows, which were constructed mostly in the 1920s and 1930s, with as many as five bedrooms and more than 2,000 square feet of living space.
In recent years, owners of Craftsman cottages have really nailed curb appeal with native landscaping and period-specific paint. Have a look at these seven Craftsman charmers from coast to coast.

Klaine fic - “All the Beautiful Pieces” (Rated NC17)
Blaine Anderson is spending the summer after graduation flipping houses with his brother for Cooper’s total home renovation show. The show features the worst houses Cooper can buy, with Blaine playing the role of lackey so that Cooper can torture him in front of his viewers. The last house Blaine has to renovate is an original Victorian House in San Diego, CA, which is in terrible condition. But this house turns out to be more than just another job. It was once owned by a famous Vaudeville ventriloquist by the name of Andrew Smythe. It houses a very interesting collection of items - among them, two life-sized puppets. Blaine isn’t sure exactly why, but he’s drawn to them - especially to the one with the beautiful blue eyes. He convinces Cooper to give him the puppets, and Blaine starts to restore them. In the course of the restoration, Blaine finds out that neither puppet is simply a run-of-the-mill puppet, and Andrew Smythe was hiding a secret that will be the key to saving two lives.
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7
Chapter 8 (4190 words)
Blaine was having a beautiful daydream before exhaustion and strain claimed him for their own, wrapping silky arms around him and dropping him into a deep, comfortable sleep. Seeing Kurt walk, talking to him, holding Kurt in his arms as if he were alive - it was the realization of everything Blaine had wanted since he found him.
And his mind gave that to him.
It’s a perfect form of closure before he continues on with the rest of his life, putting away childish things and giving up on fairytales and outlandishly happy endings.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t stay that way.
Shortly before he wakes, the nightmares start, every single one of them about Kurt - Kurt running for his life, scared, scratching frantically at … at something. The tips of his porcelain fingers bleed as he claws to get away. He doesn’t care when fragments of his delicate skin start to chip off because he needs to escape, needs to climb out of the basement room and break free.
But there is no escape.
He’s backed into a corner with no place to run, no place to hide.
Kurt looks over his shoulder at the horrific thing pursuing him, his eyes shimmering with impossible tears. Assuming his fate, he squeezes them shut in anticipation of the blow to come.
And when it does, Blaine’s world explodes.
He feels the strike in his sleep, experiencing everything Kurt did, seeing through the puppet’s eyes. He doesn’t see what hits him exactly, but it feels hard, like steel. It strikes him on the forearm, shattering the bone. Blaine opens his mouth to scream, but the air in his body evaporates with the impact, and nothing but a choked gargle comes out.
His attacker strikes him again and again – on his shoulder, dislodging his arm; on his hip, cracking the joint; on his face, destroying his eye. He falls to the floor, alive but broken. His heart sinks in his chest as he watches legs clad in black pants walk backward out a narrow doorway, a pair of heavy boots stomping shards of porcelain as they go, grinding them into dust. A featureless face, obscured by the bright light of the room beyond, stares down at him. The door is pulled shut as his attacker leaves, and the room goes completely black.
The dream ends there, but Blaine’s mind remains blank for what seems like an endless stretch of time.
In the midst of oblivion, Blaine feels the morning call to him, pulling him from sleep way too early. He tries to shrug it off, but it niggles at him to at least open his eyes. He reluctantly blinks droopy eyelids, forcing them open against their will. He sees light at first, then blurry images, but he can’t shake the feeling that he’s still dreaming. The room is coated in a bright haze – a band of morning sunlight glowing just above his head. He sees dust motes twirling in the air around him, hears the distant roar of the tide rushing for the shore.
His eyes sweep the living room. Kurt is lying on the sofa beside him with his eyes shut, one arm dangling over the edge from when he was running his fingers through Blaine’s hair. He looks almost completely human in this fog of ebbing sleep and low light. Blaine smiles at that, at his young face and calm expression, at peace for the moment regardless of his circumstances. It would be so nice if Kurt were human, if he got the chance to pick up where he left off and be the person he was meant to be.
It would be nice if Blaine could follow that journey, see how his life story turns out.
Blaine rolls away from the sleeping puppet to get a glimpse at the time on his cell phone.
4:23 a.m.
Blaine groans, the air in his lungs dense and oppressive, like a weight sitting on his chest. He can’t wake up before six – preferably before eight. He needs to rest. But his mind is a whirlwind of activity, questions, and fading visions. He flicks his gaze up toward the dining room, taking inventory of the things he left lying around – the next best thing he can think of to counting sheep. He stops when he sees Sebastian peering down at him, painted green eyes open, his wooden mouth twisted into a sinister grin.
Blaine peers back.
He squints.
He sticks out his tongue and makes a face.
Sebastian’s grin grows wider.
Blaine nods. Now Blaine knows there’s no way this can be real. Sebastian hasn’t woken. He isn’t aware. It’s a dream – all of it a dream. Blaine is alone, surrounded by his stupidity.
There is no Kurt or Sebastian anymore, and puppets don’t move and dance and speak.
He shuts his eyes, needing to block everything out and get a few more hours of sleep before he can function like a human being. With his head on his pillow and his eyelids closed, he drifts off in a matter of seconds.
“Blaine?”
Something cold and hard touches his skin, and the nightmares flood back. He whimpers, fighting the terror keeping him trapped within its walls.
“Blaine?”
The cold, hard touch gives him a gentle shake, but Blaine’s sleep addled mind reads it as the beginning of more pain.
“No,” he mutters. “No … please …”
“Blaine?” The voice is soft, and Blaine finds comfort in it, but it’s a shallow comfort. If this voice, originating from a source of kindness and compassion, is there with him, then its innocent owner is going to be beaten and tortured alongside him.
Blaine has to protect him, no matter the cost.
“Blaine? Blaine, please?” A harder shake, a hand squeezing his arm, the cold and hard digging in to his flesh.
“No! Don’t! Stop! Let go!”
Blaine screams himself awake, sits upright on the floor. His head swims with the sudden jolt of his body, the room around him tipping and twirling. Sunlight plunges through his eyes and into his brain, burning away the rest of his dreams. He spins his head left and right, looking for reassurance that he’s not locked away in that basement cell.
That he’s not broken in a million pieces.
“Blaine!” Hands on his shoulders shake him vigorously. His face snaps in their direction.
Kurt. It’s Kurt. Kurt the puppet. Kurt the living puppet, staring at him.
“Ku--Kurt?” Blaine blinks once, but then forces himself not to, afraid that one blink more will make Kurt disappear into thin air. But he can’t keep his itchy eyes open forever, and he blinks again. Then again. With each blink, his vision gets clearer, and Kurt’s face becomes sharper.
“Blaine, sweetheart.” Kurt cups Blaine’s cheek with his porcelain hand. “I think you were having a bad dream.”
Blaine covers Kurt’s hand with his, holding it flush against his flesh.
“You’re here,” Blaine whispers, shutting his eyes to absorb the cool comfort of Kurt into his skin.
“Yes, I’m here.” Kurt smiles shyly. “I told you, I’m not going anywhere.”
Blaine nods, keeping Kurt’s hand pressed to his cheek for as long as possible. His breathing slows, the soothing effect of Kurt’s presence seeping into his body. When he opens his eyes, Kurt is staring back at him with a curious expression.
It wasn’t a dream, Blaine thinks with relief. Not a dream. Kurt is not a dream.
But Blaine remembers one more thing he needs to check to make 100% sure he’s not dreaming. His gaze shifts to the loveseat where Sebastian sits, his position and expression utterly unchanged.
Blaine sighs, not quite with relief this time, but close enough. Maybe he is going crazy, but as long as he has Kurt there with him, he couldn’t care less. Where’s the crazy? Blaine invites the crazy.
Bring it on.
Blaine looks Kurt over from head to toe, drinking in the vision of the puppet dressed in his clothes, knowing that Kurt slept in them.
It’s a wonderful image to see first thing in the morning, especially after the nightmares he had.
“What are you doing up so early?” Blaine asks, hoping to segue past Kurt’s worried expression and his eventual hard-to-answer questions and into a comfortable, easygoing conversation.
Kurt’s eyes narrow. He knows Blaine is bypassing the issue of his nightmares, but he doesn’t want to pry. If Blaine wants to share them with him, he will. His face brightens, willing to change the subject if that’s what Blaine wants.
“I wanted to make you breakfast,” Kurt says, motioning with his chin to the dining room.
Blaine turns his face into the light, purposefully ignoring Sebastian while he takes a look. He sees a place mat on the table that wasn’t there before, with a glass of orange juice sitting on it. Beside the glass, there’s a plate of food, steam rising up from the surface. Blaine can’t see what’s on the plate, but he takes a deep breath in to settle himself and is greeted by the most glorious smell of eggs and bacon. He doesn’t often eat breakfast in the mornings, and when he does, it’s not at the house. He’s eaten more fast food meals than he would like to admit, which is becoming a problem for both his wallet and his waistline.
A home-cooked meal is a blessing.
He smiles at Kurt, grateful, and that beautiful stain of red returns to the puppet’s cheeks.
“Kurt!” Blaine rises to his feet, helping Kurt up as he does. “Thank you so much! But you didn’t have to do that.”
Kurt shakes his head, tsking as he leads Blaine to his meal. “I never understood that,” he says, a soft clinking noise chasing his words when his lips come together as he talks.
“Understand what?” Blaine reaches out for a chair to sit in but Kurt beats him to it, pulling it out so that Blaine can slide into the seat.
“When people say you didn’t have to do that instead of saying thank you.” Kurt picks up a cloth napkin (Blaine didn’t even remember that they had cloth napkins at the house) and tucks the end into the collar of Blaine’s shirt. Blaine holds his breath when Kurt’s fingertips brush his skin, but Kurt doesn’t notice and continues on: “I mean, I know I didn’t have to. I did it because I wanted to. And it’s obviously too late now. I can’t uncook the bacon, or unscramble the eggs and stuff them back into their little shells.”
Blaine chuckles at the passion in Kurt’s voice, light-hearted as his tone is, but so sincere in his argument.
Kurt hands Blaine his fork, staring at him with a painted eyebrow arched.
“What?” he asks, slightly taken aback by Blaine’s reaction.
“Oh, nothing,” Blaine says, accepting the offered fork. “It’s just … I could listen to you talk all day.”
The blush in Kurt’s cheeks darkens. “Why, Blaine … uh, what’s your full name?”
Blaine tilts his head. “Why?” he asks, a sly grin pulling his lips.
Kurt plants his hands on his hips. “Because how am I to properly scold you if I don’t know your full name?”
“Oh,” Blaine says with another chuckle. “It’s Blaine Devon Anderson.”
“Blaine Devon Anderson.” Kurt lets the words roll through his mouth, dance over his tongue. The sound of Kurt saying Blaine’s full name so thoughtfully sends a wave of heat washing through Blaine’s body, flowing out to the tips of his limbs and back, settling finally – and unexpectedly - in the vicinity of his groin.
He crosses his legs at the knees to dull this new ache.
“Sh-shouldn’t I know your full name?” Blaine stammers. “In case I need to scold you?”
The words tumble out before Blaine considers how they might come across in his breathy voice.
They sound unintentionally inappropriate.
The blush on Kurt’s cheeks flames so brightly, Blaine is surprised when the paint doesn’t melt off Kurt’s face.
“Not that you’ll be scolding me, but my given name is Kurt Elizabeth Hummel.”
“Kurt … Elizabeth … Hummel,” Blaine repeats, savoring each name as it passes over his lips.
Kurt’s flushed face reaches epic proportions. He brings his hands up to cover his burning cheeks.
“Y-yes. My name is Kurt Elizabeth Hummel, and … wh-what was I saying?”
“I believe you were scolding me.”
Blaine swallows hard when Kurt’s jaw drops.
Was he really thinking of kissing Kurt right now?
Was there a chance that Kurt was thinking about kissing him?
“Quite right,” Kurt says, accompanied by that strange cough that would be him clearing his throat if he were human. “Blaine Devon Anderson!” he starts again, trying to re-ignite the fire in his voice. “Are you getting fresh with me?”
“Uh … yes?” Blaine replies, not entirely familiar with Kurt’s turn of phrase.
Blaine realizes that might have been the wrong response when Kurt gasps in the most scandalized way. Blaine wants to apologize, but when Kurt starts to stutter, “Uh … uh …” at a loss for a response, Blaine bursts out laughing instead, snorting unattractively while he struggles to breathe.
“I---I’m s-sorry.” Blaine coughs, trying to kill his laughter without choking on his tongue. “Let’s start this over.” He puts down his fork and stands from his chair, facing the adorable puppet with the trembling lower lip. Blaine takes Kurt’s hands and holds them in his, rubbing over Kurt’s knobby knuckles with his thumbs. “Thank you for making me breakfast this morning, Kurt. I really appreciate it.” When Kurt doesn’t respond, Blaine takes a chance that he isn’t going to get himself slapped across the face and kisses Kurt’s cheek.
“O-oh.” Kurt puts a hand to his face, covering the kiss. “Um … you’re welcome.”
Blaine steps away to get another chair from the opposite side of the table and drags it over, setting it beside his own. He takes Kurt’s hand and leads him to it, pulling it out so the puppet can sit down. With a tongue-tied Kurt seated beside him, Blaine sits in his own chair and starts back in on his meal.
Kurt watches Blaine take the first bite of his eggs, scrutinizing his face as he chews. It’s so delicious, so decadent, so mouthwateringly tasty, that Blaine leans back in his chair and closes his eyes to devour it.
Without even thinking, he moans.
“Mmmm! Oh Lord, that’s good!”
Kurt crosses his hands in his lap, running his tongue over his lips as he watches Blaine take another bite. It’s when Blaine goes in for a fourth forkful that he notices Kurt watching him.
“Aren’t you going to have breakfast, too?” Blaine asks, putting a hand over his mouth as he talks between chews.
“I … I can’t eat,” Kurt says, his heel tapping nervously against the floor with a staccato clickclickclickclick.
Blaine gives himself a mental punch. “Oh.”
“Yeah.” Kurt nods his bowed head, his eyes staring at his folded hands.
“Well, you’re an excellent cook,” Blaine says. “This is really good.”
“It’s just eggs,” Kurt says, waving a dismissive hand in the air. “But when I was … uh … when I … you know … I used to cook all the time.”
Blaine watches Kurt’s eyes go distant as he tries to recall the memory of his life – a life that has been over longer than he’s acknowledged. Blaine sits silently while Kurt mulls over his fuzzy thoughts, pulling them to the surface.
“I used to bake all the time with my mom,” he says. “She was so good at it … so much better than me. We made cakes, pies, and cookies all the time together. Every weekend during the summer, social groups in our town would have fundraisers or bake sales – the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Kiwanis, the Soroptimist Club …” Kurt’s words dwindle, and another distant look clouds his eyes.
“Was your mother a member of all those clubs?” Blaine asks, encouraging Kurt to give him a little more insight into his childhood.
“No, but my mom believed in supporting organizations that did good works, especially for women and children. We didn’t have much money to spare, but in a farming community, trading for milk, eggs, and flour is easy, so baking was the one way we could help out.” Kurt raises eyes full of emotion despite being made of glass. “It worked, too. Her sour cream, double-chocolate fudge brownies were legendary,” Kurt says proudly. “They were the toast of five counties. She won the blue ribbon for them at the Allen County Fair twelve years running.”
“Really?” Blaine discreetly finishes his eggs and moves on to his bacon, eating in part because he’s starving, but also because he doesn’t want to hurt Kurt’s feelings, especially when he’s telling this sensitive story.
“Yeah.” Kurt raises a hand to wipe away a tear, but drops it back to his lap when he remembers who he is now. “She baked all the time. She said that it was one of the ways that her mother taught her to show love, and she baked for me because she loved me so much, all the way up until …”
Kurt’s voice breaks, and Blaine’s heart along with it.
“Oh, Kurt.” Blaine gets out of his chair and kneels at the puppet’s feet. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”
Kurt sniffles - a pointless, ingrained reaction. “I---I didn’t remember until now. She was sick for a long time. She and my dad both knew, but they didn’t tell me because they knew there was nothing anyone could do for her, and they didn’t want me to be upset during her final years. She died a few months after I turned eight-years-old, sh--shortly after C—christmas ...”
Kurt crumbles. Blaine rises up on his knees to meet him, catching Kurt in his arms. Kurt’s chest heaves and he sobs – his cries muted, with not a single tear rolling down his face to show for his misery.
“I’m so sorry,” Blaine says under his breath, feeling impotent to help in any way.
Kurt shakes his head against Blaine’s shoulder. “Don’t be, please. It’s not your fault. None of this is your fault.”
Kurt’s voice thickens, and Blaine understands.
Kurt isn’t referring to his mother’s death.
It’s not Blaine’s fault that Kurt is here, trapped in this puppet body, alive beyond his time, reliving these awful memories of love and loss and God knows what else that’s going to crop up in the next few days.
It’s someone’s fault, though. Someone did this to him.
But that person isn’t Blaine.
“Kurt, may I ask you a question?” Blaine says when Kurt’s cries die down.
“Hmm?” Kurt looks into the hazel eyes shining at him with a touch of mischief highlighting their golden flecks.
“Do you happen to have the recipe for those brownies? Because they sound really good.”
Kurt stares a second. He sniffles one last time, then he laughs.
“No. Well, yeah. I mean, I know how to make them. I have that one memorized. All the rest are written down in a book that my mom gave me, but I lost it in the fi---“
Kurt sits up suddenly, shaking his head back and forth until his neck joint rattles, and Blaine becomes afraid that he cracked something.
“Hold on, Kurt,” he says in a soothing voice. He takes Kurt’s head in his hands and tries to hold it still long enough to examine it. Kurt’s body shudders, but he goes still at Blaine’s touch. Blaine tilts Kurt’s head gently to examine his neck. The joint looks sound except for a single wire that has become loose. Blaine twists the ends tight while running his fingers through Kurt’s hair – hair that has been brushed and styled since the night before. “It’s all right,” Blaine whispers. “Everything’s all right.”
“I know,” Kurt says. “I have a chance I didn’t have before, and I am so grateful for that … but it comes with a price.”
Blaine looks at Kurt’s face. His smile has disappeared. Blaine would do anything to make that smile return.
“Hey” - Blaine brushes Kurt’s hair back, enjoying touching Kurt in this intimate way - “I have some things I have to do today, but when I come back, do you want to go out and do something fun?”
Kurt’s whole face changes at Blaine’s question, and the carefree young boy from earlier this morning emerges.
It’s like turning a page.
“Are you asking me out on a date, Blaine Anderson?” he asks, the red color creeping into his cheeks again.
Blaine hadn’t intended it to be a date. He did want to ask Kurt out on a date, but Blaine thought it was too soon. He didn’t think that if he asked Kurt on a date, he would say yes.
But here they were, Kurt smiling up at him with that enticing flush on his pale face, looking adorably hopeful.
Instead of stumbling his way through a lame explanation and ruining this moment, Blaine simply says, “Yes.”
“Then I accept,” Kurt says, clapping his hands in front of his chest.
“Great.” Blaine stands, too excited to remain crouched on the ground, ready to get his work at the Victorian house started and finished so he can get to his date with Kurt.
His date with Kurt.
He’s still considering the improbability that such a concept even exists in the universe when he feels Kurt tugging at his shirt.
“Only …” Kurt stands, crowding close to Blaine, whispering in his ear “… would you mind if I came with you today? To your work?” Kurt peeks subconsciously at Sebastian. “I’ll stay out of the way, I promise. I won’t even get out of your car.”
Blaine peeks over at Sebastian, too. The wooden puppet hasn’t moved, but that doesn’t make him any less intimidating.
“Sure,” Blaine says. “D-did you want to see inside the house?”
“No.” Kurt answers before Blaine finishes asking his question. “No, I don’t think I’m ready for that yet. I just … need to get out. Get some fresh air, not stay locked inside another house. Does that make sense?”
“Of course it does,” Blaine says, deciding not to ask if Kurt’s request has anything to do with Sebastian’s puppet and everything he represents.
“You don’t mind?” Kurt asks with a small frown. “I don’t want to impose.”
“No! You’re not imposing. Are you … are you kidding?” Blaine’s words run over one another, and Kurt giggles.
“Alright, alright,” he says, taking Blaine’s hand. “I believe you. You know, you’re kind of cute when you get nervous.”
“Are you nervous?” Kurt asks, troubling his lower lip as Blaine’s fingers fumble with the buttons on his shirt.
“A---a little,” Blaine admits. Just then, the button he’s undoing pops off. Kurt stifles a laugh as the little disk of plastic flies through the air in front of his face. “Okay, maybe more than a little, but it’s not because I don’t want to do this.”
“Then why?”
“Because I want this so badly,” Blaine explains, his voice wavering, his bravery slipping. “I … I want it so badly with you, I mean. But I’ve never done this before, and I don’t want you to be disappointed.”
Kurt lies back on the pillow beneath his head and pulls Blaine along with him, giving in to his need for one more kiss before he lets Blaine remove the rest of his clothes.
“I have waited so long for the perfect moment,” Kurt says. “The perfect time, the perfect place, the perfect person. I think most people want that, but unlike most people, I lucked out, because I got all four … especially the perfect person.”
Blaine ducks his head, smiling against Kurt’s skin.
“You can’t disappoint me,” Kurt says, placing a kiss to Blaine’s curls. “Not even if you tried.”
Blaine presses a kiss to Kurt’s exposed neck, against soft human skin.
“Blaine,” Kurt moans, prompting Blaine to kiss him again and again, each new moan eliciting a kiss. “Blaine … Blaine … Blaine …”
“Blaine?” Kurt squeezes Blaine’s hand. It pulls Blaine from his fantasy and the image of Kurt lying in his bed, bare chested, eyes shut, moaning his name.
“Huh?” Blaine asks as Kurt’s face – his real, here now, puppet face – comes into view.
“Do you need some more sleep? You kind of spaced out there for a second.”
“I guess I did,” Blaine agrees, the picture in his head dissolving until there’s not a wisp of it left. “But I’m fine. Wanna help me pick out what I’m going to wear today?”
“Oh, Mr. Anderson” - Kurt swoons, plying his flair for the melodramatic - “you do know the way to my heart. Lead me to your room and take me to your wardrobe, kind sir.”
Blaine laughs as he pushes Kurt toward his room, the sound of something wood tapping gently against wood lost amid the patter of their feet on the floor.

The open layout includes a step-down living room with exposed beams and wood-paneled ceiling, and floor-to-ceiling windows.
The kitchen features newly painted cabinets, new stainless-steel appliances, granite slab counters, and a casual dining area which opens to the terrace and pool. The formal dining room opens to the rear grounds with sliding glass doors.
A paneled family room features a media center, gas fireplace, pool and terrace access, and a wet bar. The rec room pictured with McCovey’s pool table opens out to the pool, and comes with a full bath and sauna. Other amenities include a three-car garage, new paint and carpet, and ample guest parking.
While the buyer may enjoy the retro elements of the home, as well as its part in sports history, listing agent Tom LeMieux anticipates the property may undergo a few alterations.
“My understanding is that [the buyers] want to retain part of the McCovey legacy, the history of the house, and the fact Mr. McCovey had built the house in the ’70s,” LeMieux says. “At a minimum, the buyer would update, but it’s a good floor plan.”
One detail that won’t change? The home plate embedded in the front steps. “The home plate stays with the home,” LeMieux says. “The buyer asked for that, because they appreciated the legacy. And the trustee agreed to let it stay with them.”
But the pool table in the rec room has already been donated to the Junior Giants, a free kids baseball program, for which McCovey raised millions after his playing days were over.
The slugger left a profound impact on the Giants franchise. Every season, the most inspirational player on the Giants squad is given the Willie Mac Award. A statue of the Hall of Famer stands along China Basin, looking over the waters of what is now known as McCovey Cove.
McCovey’s career spanned from 1959 to 1980 with the Giants, San Diego Padres, and the Oakland Athletics. The six-time All Star and 1969 National League MVP was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986.

1967 Plymouth Barracuda Second Time Around
They call them Pony Cars, not Fish Cars.
Unless one is a dyed-in-the-wool Moparaholic, most car enthusiasts and the general public believe that the Pony Car era started on April 16, 1964, when Ford’s Mustang was introduced to the public. It actually started about two weeks earlier when the Plymouth Valiant Barracuda (officially, for 1964, it was considered a Valiant) was introduced on April Fools’ Day.
In 1963, Plymouth’s product planners already were aware Ford’s Falcon-based Mustang was coming in the spring of 1964, and they wanted to have a response. The response was the midyear introduction of the Barracuda. But unlike Ford’s Mustang, which shared no exterior panels with the Falcon on which it was based. From the belt line down, the Barracuda was pure Signet, the top model in the Valiant lineup. This would turn out to be a fatal flaw. While Plymouth dealers shifted a respectable number of Barracudas, 23,443 to be exact, Ford sold more than five times the number of hardtop and convertible Mustangs before the fastback was added to the Mustang’s lineup for the full 1965 model year.
By the time the 1965 full-year Mustangs were introduced in September (which had several significant updates like an alternator and introduced a fastback model), Ford had a runaway hit. Concurrently, the 1967 Mustang and Barracuda models were already in development in the fall of 1964, as well as the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebirds over at crosstown rival GM. Plymouth’s design team and product planners weren’t about to make the same mistake. The 1967 Barracudas would have three models — the original fastback and new a hardtop and convertible — to directly compete with the Mustang and would share no exterior sheetmetal with the Valiant with which it would share its A-Body platform.
While 1967 was a watershed year in Pony Car history, with the Chevrolet Camaro, Mercury Cougar, and Pontiac Firebird joining its ranks (the AMC Javelin would fill out the class in 1968), it was important for a second reason: big-blocks. Ford widened and enlarged the Mustang’s engine bay to accommodate the 390 V-8, and Plymouth countered with the tried-and-true 383 V-8, pumping out a respectable 280 hp. But due to a more restrictive exhaust manifold this was less than the 315hp output produced by the four-barrel 383 in the larger mid and fullsized models. With 280 hp, the Barracuda was a strong performer but in a straight line, it would only see the taillights of Mustangs equipped with the 390 V-8.
On a curvy road, it was an entirely different story. Back in the 1965 model year, Plymouth introduced the Formula S package. Between the Barracuda’s lighter weight and its torsion bar suspension, a Formula S-equipped would out-handle any Mustang, save for the Shelby GT-350 models. The Formula S handling package (HD front torsion bars, HD rear leaf springs, sway eliminator bar) was carried over to the all-new ’67 Barracudas. When combined with the styling of the fastback model, the ’67 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S was the most European-influenced of any the ’67 Pony Cars.
None of this matters to Frank Chirat of Orange County, California, owner of the Turbine Bronze ’67 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S pictured here. Chirat, who grew up in Chicago, fell in love with cars at about age 9. He started tinkering with his dad’s ’56 Ford, which he later gave to Frank. He sold it to get a ’60 VW bug, which he installed a Judson supercharger and EMPI exhaust on.
As an auto shop guy in high school, he enrolled in Triton College’s Auto Shop AA Degree program and was hired to perform new car prep at Park Chrysler Plymouth in Chicago. This was 1967, and he predelivered and road-tested all the new Road Runners, Barracudas, and GTXs. At that time he also completed the Chrysler training school — every class they offered — achieving master technician certification.
Chirat’s life was influenced forever when one day a silver with red racing stripes and red interior Barracuda Formula S came into the new car department. It had a little over 600 miles on it, and he was told it was used for advertisements in the car magazines. It was a 273 four-barrel car with solid-lifters, a four-speed manual transmission, and equipped with every option.
“I bought it, I drove it, I drag raced it,” Chirat says. “That was until 1969 when I graduated and left Chicago for Los Angeles to get my four-year bachelor of science degree at California State University at Los Angeles with a major in automotive technology. I didn’t think I could afford college and a Barracuda, so I sold it back to the dealer. I traded my Suzuki 150 sport cycle for a ’65 Hillman Husky and headed for L.A.” (Chirat is currently restoring a similar Hillman. It’s interesting to note that in 1965, Hillman was part of the Rootes Group in the UK, which was controlled by Chrysler Corporation who handled its imports to North America. So Hillman has a Mopar connection of its own.)
“After graduation, I was hired by Ford Motor Company for the Ford Customer Service Division and for 13 years was the zone manager and owner relations manager for San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles counties along with Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1981, I bought a ’68 Shelby GT500 off Sunset Ford’s used car lot. I still have it. It’s fully restored and has won 38 First Place awards, nine Best of Shows, has been featured in several magazines, a coffee table book, and more.”
“Around 2006, I wanted to add a ’67 Barracuda Formula S to go with my Shelby,” recalls Chirat. “Trouble is, there weren’t that many Barracudas produced, and most of the ones around were modified, rusted, or not a combination I was interested in. For five years, I searched and finally this one showed up in Florida. The owner had another Barracuda, but had bought this one for his wife. They named her Justine.”
Chirat relates that it was a Texas car, delivered to its first owner at Worthey Forest Park Plymouth in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 8, 1967. He died, and it went to auction, where a lady from Oklahoma purchased it. She showed it at car shows for about 10 years, but with manual steering and manual brakes and a 383, it was a handful. She sold it to a man in Colorado and sold to the owner in Florida off eBay.
After several months of talking, sending pictures, my wife and I flew to Florida to see the car. “It was an unmolested driver,” Chirat says. “Not abused, but not overly cared for. It had about 140,000 miles on it. I purchased it in August 2011 and had it shipped to California. Justine became a California Girl.”
After getting the car to California, Chirat realized that his car was about 75 percent original and being a purist determined he would maintain it rather than commissioning a full restoration. He spent several years adjusting the doors, glovebox, trim, cleaning dirt from everywhere. “The car had been painted once in 1990, exterior only at a cost of $1,200 in enamel including orange peel,” say Chirat with a smile. “I spent many months removing and cleaning the overspray off trim and undercarriage. I was color sanding, claying, compounding, polishing, and waxing the paint to get it to look like Turbine Bronze. Any part not factory original was corrected right down to the battery and keys.”
Continues Chirat, “The Barracuda was authenticated by Galen Govier back in 2006. It’s 1 of 748 383 four-barrel Barracuda Formula S models. It is #10 of 39 in VIN sequence accounted for at that time. It was built at Chrysler’s Hamtramck plant on March 21, 1967. The documentation file starts from the first owner — DMV records, repair orders, Broadcast Sheet, Owner’s Manual, Certicard — are all original to this car.” Under the hood is found the original engine. Superior Automotive in Placentia, California, updated the cylinder heads. Art Carr rebuilt the original transmission.
Chirat notes that Justine is driven several times a month, and it’s very pleasant to drive. “The manual steering and brakes are a little challenging, but overall the car is very balanced. Back in 1967 Plymouth noted that the Formula S was a balanced vehicle in their sales brochure.”
Speaking of the sales brochure, we noted when shooting the car, we wished that we had looked at the 1967 booklet before scheduling the photo session. Frank said no problem and produced the 1967 brochure from the documentation file he keeps with the car. Thumbing through the pages, we noted a rear three-quarter view shot from above, easily the car’s best view. Think of how much better the Barracuda looks compared to its competitor from Dearborn, and how much its design influenced the second-generation Camaro and Firebird. Not too bad of a legacy for a car that in the end was overshadowed by the E-Body Barracudas that followed.

Former Charger Ryan Mathews Selling $2.85M San Diego Home
Mitchell Leff/Getty Images
Former NFL running back Ryan Mathews is scampering away from his San Diego, CA, home. The custom abode is now on the market for $2.85 million. According to property records, Mathews bought the Mission Bay abode in 2012 for $1,862,500.
Built in 2009, the four-bedroom home features both ocean and bay views. The contemporary design vaguely resembles a swooping ship, and includes three decks, a rooftop hot tub, and two built-in barbecues.
Enter from a glass gate to a large courtyard patio outfitted with a fire pit and built-in barbecue with granite counters. The outdoor cooking area is located near sliding glass doors to facilitate easy indoor-outdoor living.
The front door opens to a 2,411-square-foot interior with a circular staircase that accesses all three levels. An open living and dining space offers a fireplace and Brazilian wood floors as well as multiple windows.
The open kitchen, which accesses the patio, includes a breakfast area, and contains a large granite bar and stainless-steel appliances.

Upstairs are the bedrooms, three of which are ensuite. The large master suite boasts a fireplace and balcony.
On the third floor, a large bonus room fills a space that could be a fifth bedroom, game room, or media room. From there, you can access one of the two rooftop decks, with a built-in barbecue and fireplace. Another level up, there’s the rooftop hot tub.
In addition, the property includes a three-car garage.
It appears that Mathews, 31, has already left city life. A profile of the player in 2018 noted that he had moved to rural Ramona, CA, to a 20-acre ranch. “He has five horses, goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens, dogs. He owns a Harley, another motorcycle, and a minibike,” the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
Possibly, the move had something to do with a craving for privacy. Even after he left the game, his fans continued to make a beeline to his door to request autographs.
The California native starred in college at Fresno State before being drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2010. He played with the team until he moved on to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. He was released by the Eagles in 2017 after two so-so seasons. Mathews now keeps involved as the full-time assistant coach of a local high school team.

What Trump's Wall Along the Mexican Border Means for the U.S. Housing Market
Sarah L. Voisin/Washington Post; Don Bartletti/Los Angeles Times Robert Daemmrich Photography Inc/Corbis; John Moore/Getty Images; Don Bartletti/Los Angeles Times
When Donald Trump announced on the campaign trail that, if elected, he would build a wall along the border of Mexico, many Americans didn't believe it would ever happen. Well, now that's he's commander in chief, he insists he's going to make good on that promise and has already made moves to get the process started.
And while others can debate-loudly-who's going to pay for the thing, and the long-term repercussions on political and trade relations with our neighbor to the south, we at realtor.com® are focusing on other concerns:
What impact will the wall have on the world of U.S. real estate?
The barrier, which is expected to cost anywhere from $12 billion to $40 billion depending on who's doing the estimates, is expected to have a profound effect on the housing markets in the American towns and cities along the nearly 2,000-mile border.
The proposed edifice has sparked tensions on both sides of the border, leading to celebrations and protests, as well as threats of lawsuits. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto even canceled his visit with President Trump over the issue.
But when it comes to real estate, there will be unexpected winners and losers, largely depending on where people live along the border, how close it is to their homes, and just how dependent their local communities are on Mexico. The particulars of the wall-such as whether it's an eyesore and how easy it will be to cross-will also play a part in determining property values in some positive, and negative, ways.
There's already 670 miles of fence, stretching across a third of the border in the most populated cities, that was put up as part of President George W. Bush's Secure Fence Act of 2006. Its makeup varies along its length, from wire mesh and chain link to concrete barriers and steel beams. It's unclear what would happen to the existing divider if a new one is erected.
For now, those living on the U.S.–Mexico border are anxiously waiting for the wall to rise, some eagerly, others with dread. One thing is for sure: Many lives could change dramatically.
Life along the Mexican border
Rancher Bob Maupin patrols his Boulevard, CA, property along the U.S.–Mexico border.
courtesy Bob Maupin
Retired cattle rancher Bob Maupin staunchly believes that a bigger and stronger barrier will help border communities like his-and home prices within them. Most days, the 77-year-old gets dressed with about 50 pounds of body armor, including a bulletproof vest. He loads up his AR-10 sporting rifle, which can fire 700 rounds in a minute. And then he patrols the mile-and-a-quarter portion of his 250-acre property in Boulevard, CA, which borders Mexico.
The town, if it can be called one with just 315 residents as of the 2010 U.S. Census, sits about an hour between San Diego and Calexico, CA.
Every month, he rounds up two or three Mexicans, usually young men he suspects (with no evidence) are involved in the drug trade, and hands them over to Border Patrol agents. (That's down from the 30 to 100 people he and his local pals would catch each night in the 1990s.)
The trespassers get in through holes cut in the Mexican side of the fence, cross the road between the nations, and make their way through his own fence onto his property.
Maupin says he added 10 more feet of chain-link fence topped with razor wire onto the existing 4-foot-high barbed wire fence the government had originally put up to separate the countries.
“If Donald Trump put up a wall, they could not cut through it and drive through,” says Maupin, whose father bought their land back in 1948. “They'd either have to fly over it, or they'd have to tunnel under it.”

If residents feel safer, property values will rise
In the world of real estate, perception is everything. So if prospective buyers feel that the wall will make their communities safer, property values should indeed rise, says national real estate appraiser Orell Anderson of Strategic Property Analytics in Laguna Beach, CA.
“There are ranchers right now who have horror stories about their property being used for smuggling drugs and people. Some of them are very much afraid with armed gangs coming through,” says Jim Burling, director of litigation at the Sacramento, CA–based Pacific Legal Foundation, which specializes in eminent domain and property rights.
A strong barrier could reduce such smuggling, as well as the use of safe houses to store contraband in cities along the Rio Grande like McAllen, TX, which is about a 30-minute drive from its Mexican sister city of Reynosa. And that would help clean up some of the less desirable parts of the city, says longtime McAllen real estate broker Joyce Smithers of Keller Williams Realty.
A wall “would improve the area,” contends Smithers, who expects property values to get a boost as a result.
Check out the view-of the giant fence
In Brownsville, TX, the border fence runs practically through the backyard of 80-year-old Sigifredo Tijerina Casa. This section of fence was finished about a half-dozen years ago.
Casa, who speaks little English, has lived in his small home in one of the state's poorest cities for about 20 years. He was none too pleased when workers showed up a few years ago to begin work on the barrier along the Rio Grande.
“We used to be able to walk out all the way to the river, and now we are limited to where we can go. I'm not happy about it,” he says through a translator. “Now there are Border Patrol agents constantly patrolling along the fence.”
He worries the partition has already diminished the value of his 1,380-square-foot home, and that his children won't get what it was worth before the divider went up. And he believes a bigger wall will be even worse.
Making it harder to cross the border could affect the struggling economy of Brownsville, says Mayor Tony Martinez, a Democrat. His city of less than 200,000 residents is intertwined closely with Matamoros, Mexico.
“We get along with all these folks. They're our neighbors, they're our friends, they're our family,” says Martinez, who was born in the U.S. but whose father is from Mexico. “The reality of it is we're really one community, and our river happens to run through it.”

Does a wall make economic sense?
The potential financial impact of the wall is a topic of hot debate among those who live along the border.
Although some in McAllen, a city of 140,000 about an hour west of Brownsville, see the proposed wall as an advantage, the town could also take a hit financially. If homeowners could no longer make their monthly mortgage payments, a rash of foreclosures and short sales could ensue.
McAllen's sister city is Reynosa in Mexico, which is more than four times its size. Many local businesses in McAllen, another poor border town, rely heavily on their Mexican customers. Those shoppers were already dwindling due to the weakening peso.
If a giant wall goes up, “there's less likelihood somebody [from Mexico is] going to cross the border, go to Macy's, pick up something, and head back,” says McAllen Realtor Rene Galvan at RGV Realty.
Fewer shoppers from Mexico could lead to fewer jobs on the U.S. side of the border. And that's fewer people with the money to make monthly mortgage payments or buy homes.
“Just talking about the wall is pulling the welcome mat off the front door,” Galvan says. “It's bad for real estate.”
However, an uptick in Border Patrol agents and additional federal money pouring into the city could offset some of those losses if more Americans move to the area, he says. Plus, the construction workers building the wall could provide a temporary economic boost when they shop locally.
“We may have an increase in federal employees along the border, and they'll need places to live,” he says.

Many Americans live in Mexico-where homes are often much cheaper-and commute to work in U.S. cities. A massive concrete wall would put a big crimp in those plans, and change real estate prospects for homeowners, even in upscale areas.
Case in point: San Diego, which is about a half-hour from Tijuana, Mexico. The median price of a San Diego home is $650,000, according to realtor.com. Meanwhile, fancy beachfront properties marketed to American buyers start at just $200,000 in Tijuana, according to La Asociación Mexicana de Profesionales Inmobiliarios, a Mexican real estate group.
If a wall makes their commute more onerous, many Americans, as well as Mexicans, are expected to move back home. This could potentially drive prices even higher.
“That could be good for the market,” says Galvan. The other possibility: It could price more people out.
Walls around the world have hurt property values
We may be entering uncharted territory with the U.S.–Mexico wall, but there is some precedent here. And most of it is not great.
Despite the positives, walls are rarely-if ever-good for real estate, says Jon Calame, co-author of “Divided Cities: Belfast, Beirut, Jerusalem, Mostar, and Nicosia.” The book looked at walls dividing cities, not nations.
“As you get closer to the wall, property values fall,” says Calame, also an architectural consultant. “Nobody wants to be near them. … The perception is if you need a wall with barbed wire, there's something dangerous on the other side.”
The neighborhoods surrounding these divides tend to be low-income, as those who can afford to live far from the barriers generally do.
“The closer you get to living near one of these walls … depression goes up, alcoholism goes up, unemployment goes up, suicide rates go up,” he says. “It's a toxic situation.”
How America pays for the wall could hurt border towns
Ah yes, the $12 billion-or was it $38 billion?-question: Who's going to pay for the wall? Well, the way that works out could also deal the real estate markets along the border towns a blow.
The proposed 20% U.S. tax on Mexican imports could drive many border companies out of business, says University of Texas at El Paso professor Tom Fullerton, who specializes in the border economy. Mexican factories could close, along with nearby U.S. transportation and warehouses companies.
“As a consequence of the closures, unemployment rates would increase very rapidly, incomes would decline, and the demand for housing would decrease,” Fullerton says.
The end result could be a series of little Detroits along the border.
“Some of the areas of the border region will be devastated,” he says. “But for most areas, it'll be an economic downturn, but not a crisis.”
When the wall leaves Americans on the wrong side

Building the barrier, which could top 35 feet, on the treaty-defined boundary of the two countries won't be possible in many areas. More than half of the border lies along the shifting Colorado River and the Rio Grande. There are deserts. There are mountains.
Much of the land on the U.S. side is Native American tribal land, privately or state-owned.
These geographic obstacles have already led to some U.S. homes ending up south of the border fence despite still being in America. Other landowners have a fence dividing their property, leaving some farmers and ranchers cut off from natural water sources for their crops or cattle.
More U.S. citizens are expected to lose, through eminent domain, at least portions of their property for the construction and placement of the barrier. Others will likely wind up on the Mexican side of the wall.
And it could happen quite quickly, as the government can usually seize private land within just a few months, says eminent domain attorney Burling.
Property owners can challenge the loss in court, but “the landowner is not going to have a lot of opportunity to stop it,” he says. And they shouldn't hold their breath for a big payday. The government typically lowballs owners anywhere from a few percent to about 200% below the value of their land, Burling says. The owners can then spend years in court fighting for more money.
In addition, the construction of a nearly 2,000-mile wall is a colossal undertaking-one that will require scores of workers and building materials. Homebuilders are already facing a construction labor shortage and siphoning off skilled workers to build the barrier could make it worse. It could also lead to higher prices on building materials.
The result? Fewer homes are expected to go up while the wall is being built. And the ones that do are likely to cost more.
“There's going to be pluses and minuses,” McAllen Realtor Galvan says. “We have to see how things play out.”
