The Stroads of Chicago
While the older part of the city near the lake is dense, walkable and relatively well-served by transit, the rest...well...isn't.
The intersection of N. Cicero and W. North Avenue, where stroads collide.
As newcomers to Chicago, my wife and I like to explore parts of the city we haven't seen yet, and familiarize ourselves with different neighborhoods.
This week, we took a trip westward along Irving Park to Six Corners, then turned down Cicero, then back along Division, with a couple of detours until we went back northward along Lake Shore Drive. In all, we went about six miles west (a little under 10km).
W. Irving Park Road, aka IL-19.
Irving Park, Cicero, and to some degree Division are arterial roads. Arterials are defined as "higher traffic" urban roads, ranking below actual highways.
However, using the Strong Towns definition, these are really stroads - the unfortunate street-highway hybrid that is designed for higher speeds like a highway, with wider lanes; but have multiple potential points for conflicts and accidents such as driveways, turning entrances and exits to parking lots, intersections and crosswalks. Plus, they're usually just a block from residential streets, meaning residents are exposed to highway levels of noise and pollution.
Stroads are highly unpleasant places to walk. The sidewalks, where they exist, are usually narrow, and (as in one spot we noticed along Cicero) obstructed by telephone poles, street signage, utility hardware, and too often, people illegally parked on the sidewalk. They're often impossible to navigate for people using mobility aids like wheelchairs; there's also little to no tree canopy, leaving pedestrians exposed to harsh weather conditions, particularly in summer.
N. Cicero Avenue is mostly a depressing series of new and used car dealerships, gas stations, car repair shops, Jiffy Lubes, and empty storefronts with papered-up windows.
Using Jan Gehl's definition of pedestrian-scale urbanism, there is nothing of interest here; you're faced with long blank walls, nondescript low-rise strip developments fronted by mandated parking, chain-link fences, and empty lots dominated by weeds.
It isn't a place you would willingly walk to, it's a place you drive to and usually only because you have to.
There's no rapid transit to these neighborhoods; just buses. This means residents are often forced into car dependency, and they're also to some degree cut off from jobs, education and other opportunities because of the transit time involved.
For instance, to travel from a typical house in Belmont-Cragin to Columbia College on transit is, at best, about an hour using the bus and CTA trains.
Using buses only (for instance, if the trains are down) it can get closer to two hours.
Imagine if there was a REM-style automated rapid transit line to downtown, at an average speed of 51km/hr; It could make the trip in 11 minutes. Even if there were six additional stops of 30 seconds each along the way, that means you could get from Belmont-Cragin to downtown in maybe 15 minutes, tops.
This is all doable, but it requires money and political will.
Fixing Chicago's Stroads
Thankfully, there are groups, like Strong Towns Chicago, that are advocating for change.
In an op-ed for the Chicago Tribune, Aaron Feldman backs the new plan to redesign Western Avenue, a north-south arterial, using transit and rezoning for higher density housing:
A big part of this proposed transformation is Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), where buses are given dedicated lanes to get them out of car traffic, priority signaling, and (ideally) dedicated boarding stations.
While it'd be wonderful to magically build out a network of REM-like lines to transit-ize these arterials, BRT is a lower-cost option that can be built out relatively quickly.
Rezoning, densification, BRT, and road diets (lane removals; widening sidewalks; installation of protected bike lanes; more crosswalks, etc.) could positively affect all of the stroads we've mentioned, transforming them back into community-centric destination streets, and connecting residents to more opportunities.
This could be supplemented by programs to put short-term "pop up" retail, arts, and other community services into vacant storefronts, to breathe life back into "dead" sections of these streets.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔.𝐒. – 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐞’𝐬 𝐑𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲
In the spring of 1964, 22-year-old Gail Wise was a third-grade teacher in Berkeley, Illinois, but little did she know, she was about to make history.
On April 15, 1964, Gail and her father walked into Johnson Ford on Cicero Avenue in Chicago, searching for the perfect convertible.
The family had always driven Fords—her father owned a ’57 Fairlane and a ’63 Thunderbird, so Gail knew exactly what she wanted. There was just one problem: there were no convertibles on the showroom floor.
Seeing her disappointment, the salesman took a chance and showed her something hidden in the back, under a tarp. What he revealed was none other than a "Skylight Blue" Ford Mustang convertible—the first of its kind.
The catch? It wasn’t supposed to be sold for two more days until after the official unveiling at the New York World’s Fair. No test drives allowed either. But Gail didn’t need one. The moment she saw it, she knew it was hers.
The price tag? $3,447.50. Her salary at the time? Just $5,000 a year. But with a loan from her father, Gail became the very first person in the United States to buy a Ford Mustang—two days before anyone else even saw one.
As she drove out of the showroom, heads turned, and people waved. It was as if she had become a celebrity overnight. The next day, she drove her Mustang to school, where the seventh and eighth graders swarmed the car, amazed at what they were seeing.
For the next 15 years, that Mustang was Gail’s pride and joy. She married Tom Wise in 1966, and they had four kids together.
The car became part of their family’s daily life, from McDonald’s runs with the kids to joyrides around town. Back in those days, seatbelts were only in the front seats, and the passenger seat didn’t even adjust.
Despite its quirks, the Mustang was an icon on the road, but after years of Chicago winters, the car began to show its age. Rust took over, and the engine started having problems.
By the late '70s, the Mustang’s glory days seemed over. Tom pushed it into the garage, planning to fix it the next week, but that week turned into 27 years. Gail, ready to move on, suggested scrapping the car, but Tom refused, calling it his retirement project.
In 2005, after retiring at 60, he finally began the long process of restoring the car. He stripped it down to almost nothing, leaving just the four wheels and the steering wheel before handing it off to specialists for bodywork and engine repair.
It took about a year and $35,000, but Tom brought the Mustang back to life, adding a custom horn that sounds like a whinnying horse for good measure.
When the restoration was complete, Tom started researching the car’s history. That’s when they realized Gail’s Mustang was the very first one ever sold in the U.S. It wasn’t long before Ford took notice.
The couple was invited to Mustang events, including the 10 millionth Mustang celebration in Dearborn, and even got the chance to drive the car at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Though they don’t drive it much now, the Mustang remains a family treasure. Gail and Tom’s four kids haven’t expressed much interest in keeping it, so it will likely be sold when the time comes.
But for now, the first Mustang ever sold in the U.S. sits proudly in their garage, a testament to one couple’s journey through life and the car that’s been with them every step of the way.

Light Avenue - Secure Your Kitchen: Best Practices for Cooker Hood & Hob Safety
As in any kitchen, safety comes first. Cooker hobs and cooker hoods are such an integral part of everyday cooking, making it imperative to use them safely. Discover how to keep your kitchen safe and secure by learning the best practices for hob and hood safety.
Regular Maintenance Matters
The best defence against potential dangers is routine maintenance on your cooker hob and hood. Clean your cooker hood's filters at least once a month for optimal ventilation. It's also crucial to routinely inspect cooker hobs for electrical problems or gas leaks. In severe situations, skipping routine maintenance might endanger your safety and compromise your equipment's performance.
Mindful Operation
Always follow safety precautions when using your cooker's hob. Ensure the cookware you have is suitable for the sort of cooktop you're using—gas, electric or induction. Avoid restricting the airflow or blocking the vents on cooker hoods. The use of these necessary kitchen gadgets mindfully not only reduces the risk of accidents but also extends their lifespan.
Ventilation Excellence
An essential component of kitchen safety is adequate ventilation. Invest in a superior cooker hood that can efficiently remove cooking odours and fumes by having enough extraction power. Invest in cooker hoods with cutting-edge filtering technology to ensure your kitchen has better air circulation. In addition to improving safety, adequate ventilation also makes a home healthier.
Gas Safety Precautions
It's crucial to take extra safety measures if you have a gas cooker. Check for leaks regularly in the gas connections and lines. Learn where the shut-off valve is to know where to look in case of an emergency. When the gas cooktop is in use, keep everything combustible away from it and never leave it alone. These straightforward but essential steps might stop possible gas-related mishaps.
Electrical Considerations for Hobs
Electrical safety is crucial while using electric cooker hobs. Regularly inspect the connectors and power cords for indications of wear or damage. Plugging the cooktop into designated outlets will help prevent overloading electrical circuits. If you see any abnormalities, get expert help to solve the problem. Prioritise electrical safety precautions above all else to prevent fires and electrical faults.
Childproofing Your Kitchen
It is not negotiable to take extra care if you live with small children. Cooker hood safety locks can be installed to keep curious hands from unintentionally turning them on. Turn pot handles away from the front of the hob to prevent accidental spills. Teach kids about the possible risks in the kitchen and stress the need to keep away from cooking appliances.
Emergency Preparedness
Unexpected events can happen even when precautions are taken. Stock your kitchen with a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. Learn the evacuation routes and protocols in case of emergency. Ensure smoke detectors are operating by giving them routine inspections and tests. The effects of unforeseen events in the kitchen are lessened when one is ready for crises.
Professional Inspection and Repairs
Don't undervalue the importance of expert examination and maintenance. Arrange for routine inspections by licensed professionals to evaluate the state of your range hood and hob. It is possible to stop little issues from becoming drastic safety concerns by taking immediate action. Putting money into expert upkeep is a proactive step towards a safe and usable kitchen.
Educating Household Members
Maintaining a safe cooking environment requires knowledge. Ensure everyone in the house understands the safety precautions for hobs and kitchen hoods. Emphasise the value of following instructions, from correct usage to emergency protocols. A knowledgeable household can avert mishaps and react properly when they do occur.
Integration of Smart Safety Features
Look for cooker hobs and hoods with modernised safety features. Your kitchen's overall safety can be improved with the real-time monitoring and alerts that smart appliances can provide. Consider investing in technology that can detect gas leaks or automatically turn off the cooker in the event of overheating. You may feel secure in the kitchen knowing that an extra layer of protection is in place because of these safety features.
Conclusion
It is not just a question of convenience, but also a basic component of competent kitchen management to prioritise cooker hob and cooker hood safety. Following these recommended practices will protect your home from possible dangers and prolong the life and peak functionality of these necessary kitchen equipment. You and your loved ones can cook safely as long as regular maintenance, careful operation, and a dedication to safety are observed.

Is Audi A6 High maintenance on Indian Roads
While the Audi A6 is considered luxurious, it could require higher upkeep on Indian roads because of elements such as potholes, uneven surfaces, and harsh climate conditions. Regular servicing and the right care are critical to ensure the most fulfilling performance and sturdiness in Indian Avenue situations. If you need your Audi serviced or inspected, visit a nearby repair shop or the dealership. With regular maintenance, you can drive your car smoothly. You can buy Audi a6 spare parts and ensure hassle-free rides in your luxury car.
Even if you plan to sell your Audi for a newer model in a few years, keep its value up to maximise its trade-in value. Pay attention to a few settings that need more frequent inspections to extend your Audi's lifespan. Find and follow the service and maintenance instructions in your user's manual. Make it a habit to check your car's lights and signals, tyres, battery, oil and any other warning signals every week. Maintaining your Audi's health and longevity requires following the recommended schedule. Even without routine maintenance, you can keep your car in good condition. When you take your Audi in for maintenance with Audi a6 spare parts, be sure to follow these five simple steps:
Signals and Lights
To know what needs fixing in your Audi, you should first check the engine lights and signals—hazard lights, brake lights, headlights, turn signals, etc. The check engine light will come on if Audi's computer detects a problem. These lights will blink if the vehicle computer detects emission control system issues. Avoid major losses or accidents by remaining vigilant and watching for these signs.
Change of Oil
Because it is one of the most important components that keeps your car's critical gears turning, you should always be aware of the oil level in your vehicle. To determine if an oil change is necessary for your Audi:
Use the dipstick to check the oil level.
Use the appropriate variant of oil recommended for your Audi model.
When oiling your engine, be careful to use the correct type.
Different engine types require different oils to run smoothly; turbocharged cars are best lubricated with synthetic oil. Remember that your vehicle can exceed 1,000 miles between oil changes if you maintain a regular maintenance schedule.
Battery
Do a battery test on your Audi every three months or every three thousand miles. The battery can last longer with regular inspections during minor repairs, oil changes, or dealership maintenance. Even if you rarely ride, recharge your battery once a week rather than leaving it in the garage. Most Audi batteries last three to five years. Replace the Audi battery, just in case. It won't cost much, but being safe is better than sorry. If the battery is getting low, you can test it by turning down the interior lights or headlights. The light intensity decreases at low battery levels but increases with acceleration.
Brakes
The Audi brakes are among the most reliable parts of the vehicle. Inspect your brakes thoroughly every six months for any indications of improper functioning. If the humming noises change in pitch and volume as the engine speed changes, it could be a sign of wheel bearing problems that need fixing or replacing. As a result, you must guarantee that it is operating correctly. As a general rule, you should change the brake fluids every two to three years or after you've driven thirty thousand kilometres, so be sure to check for the need to do so. If your Audi's brake pad warning light comes on, replace the front brake rotors or pads. Avoid applying pressure directly to the brake disc or pad when washing your car; doing so might cause corrosion and additional damage. You must check all the Audi a6 spare parts.
Tyre
Check for and fix common problems like low tyre pressure or other general flaws for comfort and performance. Tyre wear can reduce a vehicle's efficiency and increase the risk of an accident, so it is important to inspect them regularly. Maintain your tyres by checking on them as soon as every two weeks. When there is a pressure drop, your Audi will let you know through the onboard monitor and noticeable changes in fuel consumption. Many Audis have this as part of their electronic stabilisation programme (ESP), which monitors the pressure in the tyres. Even more fuel waste can occur if even one tyre lacks air pressure.
Conclusion
Maintaining a regular agenda for washing and cleansing the car will ensure it is usually high-quality. To wash the surface clean, use regular water. If you want to keep your car's shine, upholstery, and paint pristine, you should only wash the inside and outside using products designed specifically for cars. If you are looking for the top Audi service centre and Audi a6 spare parts, look at the Kaxton Auto Parts website. They have everything you need when it comes to car care. Check out these deals on auto body repairs, maintenance, and other services. Look through their list of nearby garages that meet your requirements, choose from their many services, and receive quick quotes on the ones you like.

The elevated concentrations of the analyzed parameters found in the soil of both Alaoji Aba and Elekiahia Port Harcourt MV are due to anthropogenic factors including indiscriminate disposal or spilling of used engine oils and other lubricating agents by artisans in the localities. The geological formation in the area may also have contributed to this situation as it retards evaporation of the spilled used engine oils.

Diagnostics and Auto Electrical Repiars
The clutch is one of the most important parts in your car, allowing you to shift gears while driving. It is crucial to maintain the integrity of your transmission system and take precautions against damage, as failing to do so can lead to expensive repairs and safety risks. If you are noticing signs that your clutch is in need of repair, it is important to consult a specialist at Clutch and Transmission repairs Sydney to ensure optimal vehicle performance and safety.
Manual transmission vehicles typically have anywhere from two to eight gears, and are often paired with either front or rear wheel drive. The clutch is a circular plate with friction material riveted or bonded onto each side. The friction material grips to the flywheel and pressure plate when the clutch is engaged, allowing for smooth gear changes and disengagements. The clutch can be operated manually via the pedal, or automatically with the use of a torque converter.
A clutch is a critical component of your car’s engine, as it allows for a smooth change of gears and prevents the engine from overworking under heavy loads. Despite their importance, clutches are susceptible to wear and tear with continued or improper use. If left unchecked, a worn clutch can cause extensive damage to the transmission system and may even lead to a complete failure of the entire gearbox or transmission.
Some common symptoms of a malfunctioning clutch include difficulty shifting gears, grinding or shaking when selecting a gear, and the car stalling while driving in neutral. These are all indications that it is time for a professional inspection and maintenance to your transmission. Keeping up with regular service can also help to prevent problems from occurring and reduce the overall cost of your repairs.
A professional mechanic will start by conducting an external assessment of the gearbox. Upon inspection, they will look for signs of leaking fluid (usually red in colour with a sweet smell), as well as any other obvious damage or defects. They will also check the transmission fluid levels, and replace any faulty components. Once the work is completed, they will carry out a full system test and a road test to ensure the new parts are functioning correctly*.
For transmission rebuilds, the mechanic will completely disassemble the entire gearbox and then replace all of the old parts with new ones. After reassembling the transmission, they will replace the fluid and then perform a full diagnostic to ensure the new components are working properly. This will require a lot of time and effort, but will result in a high-quality, long-lasting transmission that is safe to operate. For a fast and convenient service, visit the team at AutoGuru on 50 Boonton Avenue. They can run a full transmission service and repair on passenger cars, 4WD’s, and the new DSG gearboxes found in VWs and Audis.

The Charles A. Gasser House
727 South Limestone Ave.
Springfield, OH
The Gasser House was constructed circa 1916, for Charles and Caroline Gasser. Charles emigrated to the United States from Baden Germany around 1887 and located in Springfield shortly thereafter. Upon arriving in Springfield, Charles attended Nelson’s Business College before entering the wholesale and retail grocery business. When this stylish Craftsman Bungalow was constructed, Charles was retiring from his grocery business on nearby Clifton Avenue and had begun working in real estate. Caroline was a native of Springfield, although of German descent. She and Charles likely met at the German speaking Zion Lutheran Church, where they were members. Marrying in 1895, they would go on to raise three daughters. Caroline died in 1942, followed seven years later by Charles. Their youngest daughter Erna Gasser continued living at the house while working as an elocution teacher.
Now owned by the Copeland Family, this 1916 Craftsman style bungalow home has been meticulously restored with assistance from The Turner Foundation in an effort to maintain some of the historic homes and improve home ownership in Springfield. Owner Jordan Copeland says that typically, The Turner Foundation focuses more on the exteriors than the interior, but in this home, they also did some interior repairs as they split the home from a duplex back into a single residence. Copeland says the cedar shake roof was one of the first things that piqued his interest in the home. The Copeland’s favorite part of the home is walking in the front door to the living room and the view of all the built-in woodwork, Copeland says, adding that the home also features leaded glass cabinet doors and a built-in buffet.

IN REPAIR prologue [F. CASTLE]
author’s note! this will be a short series inspired various John Mayer songs. i had this idea over the weekend and immediately put it to paper as soon as i could! this is the prologue
synopsis; Frank Castle is a dead man trying to live again. He can’t run from the past, but he can’t make peace with it either. In the midst of trying to mend himself in one way or the other, he finds his favorite distraction in a dive bar in Hell’s Kitchen. She’s feisty, energetic, a total wildcard. And not even he can predict her next move, let alone how things will turn out.
warnings: mentions of trauma/PTSD, implied caused harm, implied age gap (reader is 21+), alcohol mention, use of profanity.
word count; 1.4k
The Punisher was dead.
Frank Castle was a name spoken in hushed words throughout the city, too many people still reaping the aftermath of the mayhem he caused. Hell’s Kitchen had seen some dark days, and as the saying goes, ‘it’s always darkest before dawn.’ And that’s what this was for the people of New York City. The optimists had the shiny idea that now things would get better. Wilson Fisk was imprisoned, the Punisher was dead and they hadn’t seen the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in weeks. For once, life seemed normal. As normal as it could possibly get living in New York City. The streets were boisterous, cab horn’s honking, chatter ringing throughout the avenues, the sound of an upside down paint bucket being used as a drum was the soundtrack of the evening. Neon signs and brightly lit billboards accentuated buildings and cascaded bitter lights onto glum faces. It felt as though New York City was frozen in time, suspended in the air. As if their lives were being watched through a hazy screen from an old television. Considering the harsh broadcasts that occurred just months prior, perhaps that’s all they were doing. Living life through a set of wires and glass.
Unbeknownst to the city of New York, The Punisher was alive and well. No. The Punisher died. Frank Castle died. But Pete Castiglione, he was…surviving. He knew he needed to disappear. He had done his job, he’d taken care of business. He’d avenged his family. He didn’t need to exist after that. At least, Frank Castle didn’t. He had what seemed like a clean slate, a fresh start to live a life outside of revenge. Though, that wasn’t the driving force behind burning the vest that donned his infamous skull insignia. Frank Castle was not bothered by the bloodshed, a part of him thrived off of it. He didn’t think he had another purpose, his purpose in life was murdered. He couldn’t quite put his finger on why he decided to go borderline nomadic, even though it only occurred to him once in a blue moon. He spent his days and partially his nights, pounding away at concrete with a sledgehammer on a construction site he was working. Sometimes he’d read. He couldn’t get much sleep, not with nightmares crawling from the dark corners of his mind. But even with his eyes open, he could still see those same images.
Rain hit the cement with a powerful force, visibility was barely a few feet forward. His hood was not providing much shelter from the storm above. Droplets of water fell into his eyes, dangling on his lashes at times before plopping onto his cheeks. Bruised hands were shoved into his pockets, his wide shoulders acting as a personal barrier. The foot traffic was low, not many people walking the streets of Hell’s Kitchen at this time of night, or maybe it was due to the weather. His hovel of an apartment didn’t provide much comfort, but he didn’t see it as a home. Hell, he barely saw it as his house. Just a place to reside outside of work and get about two hours of sleep maximum. The grimy mirror he stood in front of, reflecting back to him, was a complete stranger. Someone he didn’t, no, couldn’t recognize anymore. His hair had grown over his ears and got tangled a lot easier. His beard was unkempt and coarse. He turned the faucet on, the water pressure nothing shy of a trickle and washed his face with cold water. He couldn’t keep track of how many times he filled his massive hands with the water and splashed it back into his face. After a while, fatigue was beginning to settle in and he finally turned the faucet off and let the water drip from his face.
Laying in bed, a copy of The Great Gatsby propped up on his abdomen with one arm tucked under his head, he laid there, reading the words and actually letting the story soak in. It had been a while since he allowed himself that. The smallest pleasure when he could focus his cluttered mind on something, anything else. He read about 60 pages before sliding a receipt in between the pages to mark the place he left off. He placed the book on the chair beside his bed and dug his head into his pillow. He’d exhausted all the energy he could muster and when he finally closed his eyes at nearly 3AM, he immediately drifted off to sleep. It wasn’t much longer later, shortly after four when he woke up with a start, checking his surroundings. He grunted, eyes frantic as every memory washed over him caused by the repeated nightmare. Cursing under his breath, he stared up at the water stained ceiling, trying to catch his breath and return to sleep.
- - -
How he found himself at Josie’s was beyond himself. Thankfully, due to his overgrown hair, nobody even looked twice at him. He sat at the bar, hunched over his pint, hand wrapped around the glass. It was quite late, Josie would be doing last call soon and he’d have to pack it up after only having one and a half drinks. Josie busied herself with cleaning glasses, the hushed chatter from the regular customers still buzzing around the bar. A surprisingly chipper young woman came to the bar, apron around her waist, hair pulled back out of her face and a serving tray tucked under her arm, she leaned on the counter, “Five bucks says the guy at the far side table throws up before he makes it outside.” She beamed at Josie, wide eyes too awake for Frank to even comprehend.
“For your sake, Neon, I hope he doesn’t.” Josie replied, turning around to toss her dirty rag into a soiled bin. Neon? Weird name, he thought, hoping it was a nickname and not the name on her birth certificate.
The bubbly waitress turned and caught a glimpse of Frank perched at the counter and grinned, sliding over toward him, “Here all by yourself, huh, handsome?” She chimed, cocking her head to the side.
Frank craned his head slightly, catching her eyes almost immediately. She seemed like a mischievous little thing, bouncing around the bar and cracking jokes that only she and Josie seemed to understand. “Seemed like a good place to be alone.” His voice was gruff, he definitely came off unapproachable, which was his goal. But this waitress did not budge.
“Josie’s definitely is a place for sad sacks like you. However, I refuse to close up until I can get you to laugh.” This woman was impossible, not to mention the complete opposite of Frank. Her tone was completely energetic and rambunctious, a vivacious woman working in a complete shit hole bar surprised him. Usually the bar keeps and waitresses he’d met were perpetually upset.
“That right?” He didn’t let himself smile, despite the fact that he involuntarily let the corners of his lips turn up into a partial smirk.
The waitress grin widened somehow as she placed her tray on the bar next to her and leaned more on the counter, “I’m already halfway there.” She responded, “However, I do have to work. But I will get you to laugh before the night is over.”
And she was right, when she was walking away to assist other bar attendees, Frank let out the breathiest laugh, trying to stay quiet. It didn’t feel forced or totally awful, but it was definitely a foreign feeling. A genuine laugh coming from him. He placed the cash for his drinks on the counter before pushing an additional twenty to Josie, “Give this to that spitfire waitress of yours for me, yeah?”
Josie took the money but shook her head, “Be careful around that one, son.”
Frank wasn’t paying much attention to Josie’s mannerisms, too focused on sliding his arms into his jacket, “Why do you say that?” He questioned, his smile still slightly spread on his lips.
“Who knows how long she can go before she burns away.”

Call Me Ari
Fandom: Ghostbusters
Pairing: Egon Spengler x OC (platonic)
Word Count: 2,390
A/N: Boy, I’m terrified to post any OC content, so take it easy on me, please. I’m excited to introduce you all to my character, though! I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing this🧪💚
“Hello, may I help you?”
A flat, nasally voice spoke from behind a magazine, not bothering to look beyond the pages at the person standing before her. Janine Melnitz heard the footsteps shuffle toward the front desk, but found the article before her to be much more intriguing than whatever frantic sob story the next customer was likely to have. After a while, the descriptions of the ghosts, ghouls and things that went bump in the night stopped fazing the woman, and her level-headedness told the customers that it really wasn’t as big of a deal as they thought. Anticipating another freak-out from the person before her, Janine held her breath.
“Hello. I’m looking to apply for a job. If you’re hiring- that is,” another female voice spoke, maintaining a subtle and professional composure until the end. The second sentence faltered a bit, as though the person realized the boldness of their initial statement and had to curtail themselves. Janine paused, eyes narrowing behind her glasses and peering over the top of the magazine. A woman… come to apply for a job?
The woman in question was standing stock still, with dark brown eyes focused directly back at Janine. She was thin, and looked even thinner in the large clothing she wore: a belted pair of jeans and a black turtleneck, swallowed by a draping grey cardigan that hung over her hands, just barely showing her fingers that fidgeted restlessly in front of her. Her skin was rather pale, and her cropped brown hair fell in layers. At first glance, Janine would’ve said it was disheveled, but the assorted bobby pins across the woman’s bangs gave her the impression that at least the woman tried.
“Do you believe in UFOs, astral projections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, spirit photography, telekinetic movement, full trance mediums, the Loch Ness monster and the theory of Atlantis?” Janine slowly placed her magazine down, one eyebrow quirking at the rather unextraordinary woman. Her voice was monotone, as though this were a spiel she gave more than once a day.
“Oh, actually-”
“In addition,” Janine cut the young woman off, “Can you lift loads upwards of 20 pounds?”
The woman, whose lips had parted to finish her halted statement, gazed downward, before drawing in a deep breath. Janine waited, watching the young woman prepare her self-defense.
“Actually, I’m looking for a position in your laboratories,” she said half-apologetically.
“I am willing, however, to accept all of those notions with proper evidence.”
Janine paused again, hung on the woman’s request. A job in the laboratories? She almost scoffed at the idea, thinking of the man who ran them. An independent and aloof man, who would sooner blow up a city street than take in a lab assistant (a concept based in true fact, considering there were no lab assistants but one such avenue still repairing damages).
“Oh,” Janine began, leaning forward to look up at the woman through her pink-rimmed glasses.
“Our laboratories aren’t generally hiring, but I can place the call up to the Doctor for an interview.”
The woman seemed to perk up at that, the corners of her lips twitching upward. An interview was more than she’d gotten at three other laboratories, and those were not nearly as fascinating as the Ghostbusters’ supernatural and etherically-focused research.
“I’d greatly appreciate that, Miss…” the woman glanced down at the tag on the desk, her smile growing slightly bigger. “Miss Melnitz.”
Janine picked up the phone and placed it to her ear, hovering a finger over the rotary.
“It’s no problem, but I’ll warn ya. Don’t take it personal if you’re not hired, hun. He’s really choosy with people in the lab; even the other Ghostbusters aren’t allowed in half the time.”
She watched as the young woman’s smile fell slightly, the nerves going straight to her fingers as she continued to fidget with the sleeves of her cardigan, bracing for the worst.
“There’s someone here for an interview… A lab interview… Well, I’ll ask her…Yes, her.”
Janine sighed and looked at the woman, pursing her glossed lips in a puckered frown.
“What’s your name?”
— — —
This was it. This was when real first impressions were made. The way one says their name, their credentials, and their intentions makes all the difference. The sting of rejections from the past research laboratories had dimmed her spark, but this was further than she’d gotten before, and this was Arielle Maitland’s chance to secure the most fascinating job in the city.
“Arielle Maitland,” she said firmly to the woman at the desk, her smile returning slightly.
There were seemingly hundreds of thoughts speeding through Arielle’s mind at that moment, fighting for her attention and anxiety.
Don’t look nervous, even though you are.
Tell them about your research.
Focus on your accolades.
Ms. Melnitz is judging so harshly, that I can feel her eyes slicing through me.
You should’ve brought a resume.
Don’t tell them about the ghost in your closet that you befriended.
“What school did you graduate from?”
Arielle felt her thoughts pause with a mental record scratch, drawing her attention back to the woman at the desk.
“New York University. Class of 1982.”
As Ms. Melnitz repeated her words into the telephone, an almost puzzled look crossed her face.
“Well, yes, I suppose it’s her. Shall I send her up?”
Arielle hadn’t the faintest idea what that interaction could’ve meant, but Ms. Melnitz seemed surprised and offered to send her to the laboratory, so she could only hope it meant something positive. The twist of anticipation in her stomach seemed to grow as she bit her lips inward, glancing hopefully at the staircase and then back to the secretary.
“Mhm. She’ll be right up,” Ms. Melnitz confirmed before hanging the phone back on its hook. She drew in another deep breath before gesturing to the staircase.
“Dr. Spengler will see you. Up the stairs, to the right and all the way down. His name is on the door, you can’t miss it. I wish you luck, Ms. Maitland.”
“Thank you, Miss Melnitz,” Arielle replied, almost breathless as she hurried to the staircase and took her first steps up.
“But remember-” Janine spoke up, swiveling her chair to look at her. “Don’t take it all personal.”
Arielle felt the punch of nerves hit her again as she nodded solemnly to the woman and proceeded up the rest of the stairs. It was quieter than she’d anticipated the Ghostbusters headquarters to be, though she could only assume that to mean that they were out on business. Was their laboratory researcher not a Ghostbuster, then? Ms. Melnitz had said he didn’t let ‘the other Ghostbusters’ inside, which implied that he himself was a Ghostbuster. Dr. Spengler… Arielle fought to remember which of the men had that nametag on their uniform. She had an inkling, but couldn’t be sure in thought alone.
She rapped lightly on the closed laboratory door, shifting nervously on the balls of her feet. Behind the obscured glass doors, she could hear the shuffle of papers, and then of a desk chair. The open and close of a file cabinet, and then the sound of a man clearing his throat before speaking.
“Come in.”
This was it, for the second time. The real first impression, the real selling point. If she could prove her scientific and professional prowess to Dr. Spengler, she may just secure a paying job that wasn’t tutoring failing middle school students.
Focus on your accolades and research.
Don’t talk about the ghost you befriended.
Arielle Maitland gingerly opened the door and stepped into the lab, taking a moment to glance around. It wasn’t a very large laboratory, but it was well organized and well-lit, with assorted scientific diagrams on the walls and a bookshelf of journals, textbooks and guides lined neatly in one corner. And, sitting at the main desk was a thin man with a long, slender nose and rounded glasses perched on the bridge. His hair seemed to defy laws of physics, standing atop his head in light waves that seemed untouched by products. Arielle had to wonder if some kind of electric shock produced a style like that. He wore a white lab coat and drummed his fingers mindlessly against the edge of the table.
“Arielle Maitland?”
His voice was deep and bore no hint of emotion. As Arielle looked down at him, she could gather no hint of intrigue, dismissal, or otherwise identifiable emotion. She proceeded with caution, measuring each word carefully as she spoke.
“Yes. Hello, Dr. Spengler. Miss Melnitz sent me.”
Dr. Spengler let out a low hum, reaching for a journal at the corner of his desk and rifling through the pages. Ari drew in a silent breath before pressing forward.
“As she said, I’m interested in applying for a position here in the- your laboratory. I hold a degree in chemical engineering and cosmology from NYU, with a minor in psychology. I’ve worked-”
“Researching spectroscopy of historical landmarks and denoting psychological shifts of visitors, in comparison with newly built architecture,” Dr. Spengler finished, reading from the page he’d just found in his book.
“An interesting concept, it almost lends itself to studies of parapsychology. Though your samples didn’t go before the 18th century and avoided religious locations.”
Arielle Maitland was floored. Her senior research was being read back to her, scrutinized and even half-complimented, by a Ghostbuster. She wasn’t even sure if her own parents had made it through the published research, let alone anyone else. And yet, Dr. Spengler was drumming his fingers along the page, humming lowly as he read over her published work with narrowed, dark eyes.
“Well- pre-revolutionary sites are harder to come by in the New York as visitor locations, and I wanted to keep my research in line with non-rural areas. In addition, the research of historical religious sites may have influenced the variable psychology and verity of the interview subjects, regardless of spectroscopy. And, while I admit there are hints to parapsychology in theory, I’m afraid NYU would’ve never recognized that as a viable area of study.”
Dr. Spengler turned from his chair and stood up, slowly approaching Arielle. His looming shadow over her brought her attention to his height, and how significantly taller he was than her. His brows were furrowed as he looked down at her, studying her facial expression (which she knew, at that moment, must have been a thinly veiled look of pure anxiousness) and body language. Her back arched as she looked up, taking a cautious step back.
You blew it. You talked back and you blew it. Take the criticism and accept your failure, Ari. Don’t. Talk. Back.
“Convincing institutions is like pleading with a brick wall,” he muttered. “In the realm of parapsychology and ethereal-plane chemistry, religious sites are home to some of the most potent readings and samples in the field.”
Arielle blinked silently at him, lowering her head so as to not crane her neck toward his face. In a flash, he turned around, swiping the book off of his desk and speaking again.
“But I commend you, the NYU Scientific Journal is a competitive research publication, and mixed psychological-chemistry research is rare. From a student, no less.”
“Th-thank you, Dr. Spengler. I appreciate that you’ve read my research.” Arielle half-whispered her response, airing on the side of caution. His tone still bore no indication of where his thought process was, and whether or not she rested on the precipice of a job offer or another miserable rejection.
“I read the research that’s worth reading,” he replied, closing the journal and filing it back on the shelf. For the first time, Ari could sense a shift in his voice. Though she could no longer see his face, she could almost feel the hint of a smile in his words. She knew not to be so bold as to take it as a sign, but it did make her wonder… If he thought her research was worth reading, would she be worth hiring?
“Having a broad perspective and proper research is important, especially in this industry.”
Arielle rocked on her heels a couple of times, growing slightly more confident in the path Dr. Spengler was taking with his words. Perhaps, a slightly bolder and self-assured approach was warranted. Her tone brightened as she half-smiled at the doctor’s back.
“Well, I believe I have both; an open mind, but scientifically driven toward empirical evidence.”
“Your research speaks as evidence, Ms. Maitland.” Dr. Spengler took a pause before turning back to face her. Then, she could see the corners of his lips upturned, in a slightly anticipatory smile.
“I’ll look forward to seeing the research in this laboratory.”
Arielle let out a breath that she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, in a surprised half-laugh. He was offering her a job at the Ghostbusters lab, even anticipating working with her. Her eyebrows raised in pleasant shock, and her freckled face broke into a wider grin than she’d had in a very long time.
“Thank you, Dr. Spengler. Thanks. I- I thoroughly look forward to it as well. There’s a lot to be discovered, and I can’t wait to-”
For a moment, she stumbled, fighting for a professional phrase but coming up empty. With an apologetic laugh and an embarrassingly red flush to her face, she pressed on. “To discover it.”
She held out a hand for Dr. Spengler to shake, only to find it hanging awkwardly in the air, half-covered by her cardigan. For a brief moment, she locked eyes with him, her face growing even deeper in color as she slowly went to lower her hand. As her fingers recoiled with another guilty glance to the ground, she felt the man’s thin fingers grasp around her hand, firmly shaking it. Her head jerked up with surprise, meeting his dark eyes once more.
Dr. Egon Spengler had a smile, a full smile, painted across his face now as he looked at his new lab assistant and research partner, Arielle Maitland.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Arielle.”
Ari grinned widely back at the man and nodded as she shook his hand. She stepped back toward the door, placing one foot out before turning back and offering one last tip to her new boss.
“Please, call me Ari.”

Sometimes You Just Don’t Know the Answer
4 times you don’t know the answer, and the 1 time you do
This is the 2nd part to Personal Google! (You don’t have to read it to understand this, but it exists if you want to).
Ship: BAU!reader x Spencer Reid
Summary: You’d call yourself a pretty educated individual, and most people wouldn’t argue with that, given that you’re a member of the BAU at Quantico. There’s just something about your best friend Spencer Reid that gets you all tongue tied.
Warnings: Mentions of cases and case-typical violence, mentions of alcohol, Spencer and Reader being idiots again.
Word count: 3k
A/N: The feedback (in asks and the tag reblogs) for Personal Google was so lovely and encouraging and I am very grateful for it! I only made this account a few days ago and I’m already so glad I did :) I hope this is a satisfactory second part and, requests are open!
(This is the Reid I’m imagining here)
“What is up with you and Reid?” Emily’s volume is unmoderated at the best of times but right now it’s like she’s trying to alert the entirety of Virginia to your dating woes.
Dating woes might be a stretch, actually. Somehow, just her implication that something is happening between you and Spencer (even though it isn’t, unless you count two exhausted idiots falling asleep on each other and being too bashful to ever mention it again), is enough to get you feeling uncharacteristically shy.
“Nothing,” you shrug, “Well. I don’t know, honestly, nothing I guess? We haven’t spoken about that night.”
Emily’s eyes rake over you, and you can tell she’s waiting for you to continue.
“There’s nothing!” you object, “We just, it was accidental, we fell asleep because we were watching a documentary and we were tired and neither of us fell asleep on purpose.”
She laughs, dry and amused, “At this rate, you’ll be lucky to have sorted things out before you’re 50.”
You scowl, but it’s only because you know she’s right.
***
You don’t have much time to think about your situation with Spencer for a few weeks, considering the rate at which the cases come rolling in. This newest one arrives within about two days of the last one you’d just wrapped up. It’s actually kind of rude, you’ve decided, that the serial killers of America have decided to deny you two weekends in a row.
You’re briefed on the case quickly: four women have gone missing over the past 7 months from a small town in Ohio. There’s no distinct pattern that can be discerned among the victims, the oldest is 60 and white, the youngest is 23 and Asian-American. However, the first three have been found dead in the past two weeks, all within a mile of each other and all killed with the same MO: ligature strangulation.
“So we have no idea how he’s choosing them,” you say.
“No,” Hotch replies, with a sigh.
Meaning that this is probably going to take a while. Spencer senses the way you tense up a little as you absorb that fact. So he goes out of his way to sit next to you on the plane. Once the discussion about the case is done, he nudges you gently, “Did you bring a book?”
You shake your head, “I finished the one in my go-bag. Didn’t have a chance to replace it.”
“Would you like to read this with me?”
You place your hand on his wrist, gently turning it so you can see the cover, “Spencer this is written in Greek.”
“I can translate,” he says.
You move closer to him then, your head resting just against his plane seat and your chin almost jutting against his shoulder.
“Is this okay?”
He nods. The remaining 45 minutes of the flight are spent with him reading to you softly, adding in his own thoughts as he translates and sometimes going off on little tangents. By the time you land you’ve entirely forgotten about your ire with the case. You’re focused only on the characters he introduces you to, who are clearly in love even if they’re too stupid to see it, and the way his nose crinkles a little when he reaches a word with no direct English translation.
Whhat you don’t realise, is that you end up folding into him: head pressed against his chest. Somehow, neither of you notice how you naturally gravitate towards each other. Some pair of profilers.
--
Hotch sends you in different cars to the precinct, and you’re soon reminded of your frustration as you’re caught up in the hub-a-bub of the case. It’s not until you’re leaving the station, after a long and relatively fruitless briefing with the medical examiners and local PD, that you even have time to acknowledge Spencer properly again.
And even then, it’s only when Hotch says.
"You'll be sharing a room with Reid, alright?"
He’s only really asking as a formality. Nobody questions Hotch’s assignments for them. So why, then, do you feel yourself flush a little.
Why then, do you feel so embarassed replying, “Alright.”
***
There was nothing much to be nervous about with sharing a room, as it so happened. The past day and a half had been a whirlwind since the unsub had snatched a fifth victim. You’d been sleeping in shifts, making sure that some of you were awake at all times to keep working.
You were working on the geographical profile with Spencer, and had taken to driving around to look for landmarks at night, when there was nothing much else to do. There were maps but sometimes it helped just to get things embedded in your brain. And now, at 4am, you’re bursting into the conference room occupied by Spencer and Rossi, because you might just have got something.
"I have an idea,” you say, and before anybody can even respond you’re scribbling hurriedly on the whiteboard.
“Slow down kiddo,” Rossi laughs.
“Sorry I’m just,” you cut yourself off, slightly flustered and tapping your foot with frustration as you try to put the last pieces of it together, “Diana Matthews.”
“Yeah?” Spencer responds.
“She was the one who lived on Lakefield right?” Rossi asks.
Annoyingly, you can’t remember off rote. Spencer sees the pinch of frustration in your brow. He senses that you’re heading for the case file.
So, he answers, “Yeah 38 Lakefield Drive.”
Smiling gratefully at him, you breathe a sigh of relief, “There’s three different stores in the area for this local electronic repair company, Gladston Digital, in this area. Two of them aren’t accounted for on the maps because these are from last year, and one of the ones on Google is pinned to the wrong street, there are two Minister Avenues and one’s on the complete opposite side of town.”
Denoting the map with annotations as you go, you continue, “All of the victims had residences within a mile of one of the three stores. And we interviewed the area manager, Paul something, he manages all three stores. He came to speak to me and Hotch while we were scoping the area.”
“Inserting himself into the investigation,” Rossi notes, “Fits the profile. A stalker like that would want to remain an illusion of control.”
“I just need to get Garcia on the phone to see if it checks out.”
Spencer just watches, slightly in awe, as you make the phone call to Garcia. She manages to cross-reference bank statements and emails, showing that all five of the victims had taken something of theirs in for repair sometime in the year before their disappearance. And he feels something in his gut. Pride? Maybe. That’s certainly a part of it.
But there’s something else in there too. Your eyes meet his, with a flicker of recognition. He realises what it is then: marvel. Your brain works so fast, and that’s not novel to him, he knows you’re intelligent but there’s just something about how fast you manage to put it all together. You conjure something out of nothing, a link that he’d missed. And he’s reminded, again, that he has to try and keep up with you sometimes. He wonders if you know that.
Probably not, he thinks. You’re rambling down the phone and gesturing with your hands, in a way you may or may not have picked up from him, and all he can think is how you look so in your element. And beautiful.
He’s a little embarassed about how normal it feels for that last observation to pop into his head.
***
“To _____!” Prentiss cheers.
8pm has rolled around. Since your revelation 16 hours earlier, you managed to confirm your thinking, apprehend Paul Bader, and save the fifth victim. All in all, a pretty good days work. It’s not just down to you, but everyone’s singing your praises so loudly it’s making you a little embarassed.
Even Hotch sets a drink down in front of you, squeezing your shoulder, “Really good work today ____.”
Fair to say you’ve probably peaked there.
Spencer is sat to your left, sipping at a Mai Tai that you know is going to have him giggly in about an hours time.
“I wasn’t trying to keep you out before,” you tell him, “I was going to come and wake you up when I got back but you were in the conference room.”
He smiles, “I know. It was my shift to sleep.”
“Bet you’re paying for that now.”
“A little,” he chuckles, “It’s worth it.”
"I just didn’t want you to think I was hanging you out to dry. You know, to make myself look good,” you decide to press further: mostly just because the team has sung your praises and that kind of attention makes you shirk at the best of times. Let alone when you’re sat with the guy responsible for creating half the damn profile.
His eyebrows furrow. You worry for a minute about what he’s going to say, but then, “I would never think that about you. We’re a team.”
He squeezes your hand. Maybe that’s your favourite thing about Spencer, really. More than the fact he remembers to get your caffeine just how you like it, more than how gentle he is with just about everybody he encounters, more than his relentless enthusiasm for your questions about whatever pops into your mind. No, it’s his modesty. The way he doesn’t even think for a moment to be prideful or arrogant about his intelligence. He genuinely roots for you in every moment, you think.
“Are you okay?” he asks, “You seem a little..quiet.”
It wasn’t until he mentioned it that you realise you’d let your thoughts run away with you, “No. I’m good. Just thinking about how good of a teacher you are.”
“You think so?”
“Of course I think so. You’ve taught me. I didn’t know the first thing about geographical profiling when I got here two years ago. I could barely read a map,” you laugh, keeping your tone sincere, “You’re a really good teacher Spence. I feel like I learn so much from just being around you.”
“I often don’t give you much choice.”
You smile, “I wouldn’t want you to. Really. I’m always interested in everything you have to say. I think you know that. But I wanted to tell you anyway. So you’re sure.”
He’s incredibly grateful you get pulled into a conversation by Morgan, giving him a moment to process.
A lifetime of being insecure. Of feeling like nobody was interested in what he had to say but not being able to really control whether he said it anyway. All this time being insecure in himself, and you liked it. Complimented him on it, even. Considered him a teacher. He doesn’t think he could articulate, in any of the languages he speaks, the sense of peace that brings him.
-----
The Mai Tai’s do make him sleepy. Buzzed, but sleepy. After being bought rounds by Hotch, Morgan, and Spencer, you’re feeling exactly the same. It’s only 10:30pm by the time you decide to make your departure for the night. This is much to the chagrin of Emily, who lolls against Rossi’s side demanding that you stay.
“Some of us have been up since 4 this morning, breaking their backs to keep this country safe,” You tease, putting on a melodramatic air just for affect, “Besides, you’re going to regret this when you have to be up and back on the jet in the morning.”
“You will, especially since you still owe me that report,” Hotch teases, with a smile.
Emily rolls her eyes, “You two are no fun.”
She’s joking, goading you, but unfortunately for her you have a sleepy Spencer nuzzling against you which is a far more pressing matter to deal with.
“Come on Spence, let’s get you to bed,” You say, gently wiggling out from under him and offering him your hand.
He pouts at the momentary loss of contact. It’s subtle. You catch it though. He links his fingers through your own, holding your hand properly, and you try not to read into it too much. He’s tipsy. He’s tired.
Ignoring the deliberately obvious eyebrow-wiggling from Morgan, you make for the lift.
“You didn’t have to come to bed just for me,” Spencer says, “I feel bad for taking you away from the others. I’m not that drunk, I could get myself to bed.”
You shake your head, “I wanted to go to bed with you.”
His eyes snap to you, a grin playing on his lips.
“I mean, I wanted to go to bed. And we’re sharing a room. So I’m going to bed with you. As in we’re going to the place where bed is, together.”
He’s just enough tipsy to be confident enough to jest, “Sure.”
You roll your eyes, “You sound like Morgan.”
“What did Morgan say?”
“Don’t act like you don’t know exactly what Morgan always says whenever anybody goes off together.”
“That they’re having sex,” He giggles, tipsiness shining through again.
“Yes, Spence, that they’re having sex.”
“But we’re not.”
The elevator dings as you arrive at your floor, saving your brain from delving into the implications of what he’s just said. And whether that was a disappointed or netural tone.
He hasn’t let go of your hand. He walks to the door with you, still keeping your hand in his. It’s hard not to let yourself read into it now. How holding hands with him could be such a casual thing. Hard not to imagine walking through bookshops with him, one hand in yours and the other picking books off the shelf he thought you’d like. The domesticity of it sickens you.
Then he lets go to cross to the bed.
“Aren’t you gonna put your pyjama’s on?” You ask.
“I wasn’t gonna sleep yet,” he says, “I was gonna...”
He looks bashful, suddenly, self-consciously licking his lower lip, “I was gonna ask if maybe you wanted to watch something with me. You can pick. I always pick.”
“This an excuse to get me in bed with you again, Spence?” You tease, just past tipsy enough not to care that this is the first time you’ve even acknowledged that night.
"Yeah, the Pearl Harbour ruse doesn’t work twice,” he jokes.
You wish you could find the courage to tease him more. Unfortunately, the liquid courage seems to have run out, and the topic somehow feels too delicate to touch.. Instead, you change quickly into your pyjama’s. Together, you pick something to watch, settling down. You’re suddenly thankful for the single bed, the necessity to be cozied up against him as you watch. To feel his chest, every beat of his heart. You swear it’s beating fast. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
***
Just like last time, you wake up huddled against Spencer. Unlike last time, there’s no Emily banging the door down to drag you to the police station. No, it’s quiet.
You can’t see what time it is because there’s a Spencer between you and the clock. Your phone is in your back pocket but it’s hard to find any motivation whatsoever to move when you’re like this: face pressed into his chest, his head resting atop of yours so a single curl of his hair tickles your nose, his hand on your hip holding you against him.
His eyelashes flutter, “Are you awake?”
“Yeah. I just woke up.”
He smiles, “Me too.”
“Looks like we did it again.”
“Looks like we did,” his voice is quiet.
“Do you want me to move? If I’m...I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”
His free hand comes up to your chin, tipping it so you’re looking him directly in the eyes. His pupils are dilated. In the dim light it’s hard to place the look on his face exactly. But it’s soft.
"C-Can I kiss you?” the question spills quickly from his lips, like he’s afraid he’ll change his mind if he doesn’t get it out fast, “I just. I don’t know if that’s what you want too, I’ve just really-”
"Kiss me, Spence. Please kiss me.”
The smile on his face would have made you fall in love with him, if you weren’t already. And then he kisses you. Barely. Your lips are just grazing against one anothers. You tilt yourself upwards, towards him, giving him a better angle. Then he really kisses you, capturing your lips in his. It’s sweet, it’s soft, it’s...it’s everything. It’s everything, how his hands tangle themselves tentatively in your hair, how he kisses you so deeply, drinking you in.
His hand cups your cheek, then he’s pulling back, just a tiny bit, to mumble against your lips, “I’ve wanted to do this for so long.”
The only appropriate way you can think to verbalise your agreement, is closing the gap between your lips again. There’s an urgency to it this time. Your lips move quickly, passionately. He swipes his tongue across your lower lip and you let him in, your tongues delicately dancing together. He’s good. He’s good and you don’t even notice the morning breath or faint taste of rum, it’s just Spencer.
When you finally come apart, you’re out of breath.
“I didn’t think you’d ever do that,” you say, “I was worried I was reading this whole thing wrong.”
He frowns then, that little nose crinkle appearing again, “I thought I was too obvious.”
“So did I. Maybe it’s best if we don’t tell Hotch how bad we are at profiling each other. He might rethink his decision to take us on.”
He laughs, “Not being able to profile when somebody’s in love with you might be a cause for concern. There are several obvious phyical signs of love, including dilation of pupils when looking at the object of your affection, heart rate synchronisation.”
“How am I supposed to know if our heart rates have synchronised?”
He smiles. Pressing a finger to your lips, he dips his head in the small chasm between your two chests. In the silence, in the early morning quiet, in the absence of all distraction you can hear it. The steady thrum of your hearts, pounding away at identical paces. The sound that told you that some part of you had always known.

The Disappearance of LaResha Deana Walker and her mother Wanda Faye Walker, 17 years apart
On the evening of November 19, 1999, LaResha Deana Walker dropped her two-year-old son Rayvon off at her sister’s house in Nashville, Tennessee. She told her sister she had planned on driving to Murfreesboro, Tennessee (40 miles south of Nashville) early in the morning to get an estimate on a repair for her car. Later that night, LaResha spoke with her father on the phone between 9:30 and 10:00 p.m.
The next day, when the family hadn’t heard from LaResha, and she hadn’t picked up her son, her sister, Lakesha Chambers, drove to her townhouse at 3858 Edwards Avenue in East Nashville and found the place empty. The lights were on, and there was loud music playing, but Lakesha described the scene as normal and that nothing seemed out of place aside from the loud music. She even noted that the screen was locked. Still, there was no sign of LaResha or her car.
On November 21, when nobody had heard from LaResha in two days, her mother, Wanda Faye Walker, reported her missing. The police and family learned from one of LaResha’s neighbors that they had heard her arguing with someone outside her townhouse on the night her family last saw her. She had lived there for less than a month. Her disappearance initially received media attention in the Nashville area, but unfortunately, coverage quickly faded.
According to her family, LaResha did not have any problems with anyone in her personal life or at work, nor was she dating anyone at the time. Her sisters also described her as a private person, so they didn’t know everyone she hung out with, but she would never put herself in a dangerous situation. Police believe she was most likely the victim of an abduction. “All indications are she was a good mother and would not have left her son,” Det. Sgt. Pat Postiglione told WKRN. “They went in there and took her because the way her home looked one second before she was kidnapped is the way it was the way police found it.”
LaResha drove a Maroon 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva with a Tennessee license plate number of 419-ABG that has never been located. The car had a distinct long scratch on the driver’s side. The clothes she was last seen wearing were found in her home. Twenty-one years later, there is still no sign of LaResha or her car. LaResha was 23 years old, 5’7”, and weighed 190-200 lbs at the time of her disappearance. She had black hair and brown eyes. She had a heart condition and took medication for it, which was found at home.
Tragedy struck the Walker family again 17 years later, in October 2016, when LaResha Walker’s mother disappeared. Wanda Faye Walker was scheduled for work on October 5 at the Dollar Tree on Franklin Pike in Nashville but never showed up for her shift. The last place she had been seen was the home she shared with her cousin on 11th Avenue South in Nashville. The Dollar Tree she worked at was less than two miles from her home.
On October 13, Wanda’s Nissan Maxima was found by police in front of a house in the 1100 block of Wade Avenue in Nashville, down the street from her home. People in the area stated it had been there for about a week before it was found. The car was locked, and her purse was found inside, along with blood in the backseat. Investigators later determined that the blood belonged to Wanda.
According to family members, Harold Henderson, Wanda’s boyfriend, was the last person to see her alive. Conflicting reports state that Harold assisted her on the day of her disappearance when her car overheated on the side of the road. He allegedly added oil to it, and the car ran fine afterward, so he and Wanda parted ways. Other reports have her last being seen at her home.
Investigators haven’t found any indication that the two women’s disappearances are linked in any way but what are the chances a mother and daughter would disappear from the same city 17 years apart and never be heard from again, leaving behind heartbroken and shocked family members?
