The Heroine and the Villainess

You know... going through some modern arthuriana like DC superheroes, John Booreman's Excalibur, Fate Franchise, Mists of Avalon, etc. and seeing Morgan le Fay being made into Mordred's Mother made realize the biggest irony in Arthurian Mythology:

Morgan le Fay and Queen Guinevere switched roles

Originally, Queen Guinevere was the villainess, the traitor wife who willingly married Mordred and, as Layamon says it, "did many sorrows upon the land that [Mordred and Guinevere] lost their souls" In certain tales, like Lanval, she's an actively promiscuous and dishonorable lady even before Mordred's treachery, trying to get noble knights killed if they don't do as she pleases. The Welsh Triads even had her as the Fourth and Worst of the Unfaithful wives of Britain, above even Isolde, Mark's wife and Tristan's lover.

It's so bad John Rhys recorded an old welsh folk rhyme about how awful Guinevere is:

"Gwenhwyfar ferch Gogfran Gawr Dryg yn fechan, gwaeth yn fawr" "Guinevere, daughter of Giant Gofran Bad when little, worse when great"

Meanwhile, Morgan le Fay was originally a benevolent fairy, if not a heroine in her own right. A distant, magical lady who was Arthur's sister, the ruler of a paradisical island, a healer and protectress of heroes.

And ever since Geoffrey of Monmouth, it is Morgan who is Arthur's Savior. Vita Merlini, Didot Percival, Vulgate Cycle, Post Vulgate, Le Morte D'Arthur... all the significant and influential works of the mythos all agree: Morgan comes to Arthur's aid after the final battle of Camlann, rescuing her dying brother and bringing him over to her realm to be healed, and by extention, promises the hope of Arthur's return.

It is Morgan le Fay who ensures the return of the "Once and Future King"

Fast forward a few centuries, and few cultural trends later...

Guinevere became the misunderstood heroine. Someone who is said to be the Most Virtuous Queen, the Best and Greatest Lady living, who did no wrong in loving man who wasn't her husband - who ironically wasn't Mordred, but a new character, Lancelot, the Greatest Knight of all Time, bar Galahad.

Whilst Morgan was turned into an evil, promiscuous sorceress. A vile and heinous woman who harrasses and seduces many knights in her schemes against Arthur's Court, especially the aforementioned Lancelot. In an even more egregious transformation, Modern Arthuriana goes further and associates Morgan with Mordred, typically as his mother, and works with him to bring down Camelot and Arthur.

So in short, the heroine became a villainess and the villainess became a heroine.

And Mordred went from Guinevere's Partner-in-Crime to a mama's boy under Morgan.

In your opinion what makes a good Isekai?

To further the question what makes a good overpowered Isekai?

There no one thing that makes a good story in any genre. It depends what the story is trying to do.

For example, lots of Stupidly Overpowered Protagonist isekai suck because they try to draw their narrative tension from battles, and the stupidly overpowered protagonist completely undercuts any sense of peril. Reincarnated As A Slime is one of my personal bugbears on that front.

Bofuri, on the other hand, cheerfully overpowers Maple in the dumbest ways because it doesn't need her to be vulnerable in combat. It's an anime about cute girls hanging out in a video game and being friends, its drama is social rather than action based, it actively does not WANT to have tension. It's a chill hangout session, and having Maple be OP as hell supports that concept by sapping all tension from combat scenarios.

There's been a bunch of Slow Life style isekai doing the same kinda thing, and it makes the OP protagonist way more fun than your SAO knockoffs, or that horrid trash genre of revenge porn fantasies like Redo of Healer or Shield Hero.

The OP protagonist is a power fantasy, so what matters is what that power fantasy is used for. In Bofuri it's "being the social binding joint for a group of friends doing activities together."

In Reincarnated As A Slime and many other bad isekai of its kind it is "be the coolest most great dude who's great at everything and everyone thinks he's cool and wants to bang him because he's inherently better," which to me is just tedious ego masturbation. I can't find any joy in it.

I really like Campfire Cooking In Another World With My Absurd Skill, whose OP protagonist fantasy is "cooking really nice meals for people and making them happy," and I did enjoy the low stakes lesbian-coded family building of I've Been Killing Slimes For 300 Years And Maxed Out My Level (I hate the titling convention so much though).

To return to your question, what makes isekai good are the same things that make anything good: interesting characters, compelling plot, strong themes etc. But one of the common isekai pitfalls is using genre tropes that actively undercut the tension of the story structure. Like an OP protagonist who makes all battle tension meaningless in a story that draws its narrative tension exclusively from battles.

(side note: I have deeply fallen for the Reincarnated As A Villainess In An Otome Game subgenre, so readers, recommend me good ones if you have them!)

-i like that people weren't left unscathed and came out changed, either emotionally like mithrun, kabru or marcille, or physically like falin, or both like laios. i would have liked to see marcille's reaction at thistle dying, considering she'd said she wanted to thank him for saving her life. i’d also have liked to see a reaction from marcille at having killed the canaries that one time.

-the fun part is going along on an adventure with a diverse cast in a cool world. that adventure vibe comes off so deliciously (hehe).

-the addictive part for me is mithrun and kabru, mostly when they're together. a kabumisu shipper, obv.

-now that all's said and done i can safely say, my faves are mithrun, thistle and kabru. i also have a soft spot for pattadol; she's sweet, she tries. i have soft spots for the canaries in general, they're fascinating.

For fun, after seeing a few of your drawings with the g1-infection, I decided to look up some ponies, to see if they had namesake in previous gen... I discovered something I find really funny and need to share : Amongst the pillars only three have them and, in an infection AU, those are the WORST to lose in the group XD You have Starswirl (with 4 namesakes across generations, and three/four different design in g4 (I think?)), the one with the most chances to find a magical solution. You have Meadowbrook (g3) the litteral healer of the pillars. And Somnambula (which would be so weird as g1 Somnambula is a witch and not a pony x'DD) the element of hope, and she doesn't just become a different pony but instead a villainess who kidnaps ponies. Can ponies even change in non-pony if they have a predecessor which isn't a pony? I imagine for poor Mistmane, Rockhoof, Stygian and Flash if they are there and see their three friends changing... OOOF (with the added drama of 'if we weren't in this era it would have never happened to us')

Alright, so, I don't really know much about the pillars. I know and have seen the characters around (and seen the episode with Mistmane as far as I remember) but other than that, no idea about them.

But interesting that 3 of them have an inspiration! Certainly makes for a fun...dynamic <.< xD

I'd say for rules of the infection, Ponies can't change into non-pony inspirations. But it could maybe cause problems either way? If we're being REALLY mean, then they won't change outwardly but their minds and memories slowly fade and are replaced. It would certainly make things more difficult to notice until it is to late. But I'm not sure how much I'd want to implement that (although its a really neat idea xD)

But the "If we weren't in this era it would have never happened to us" hits different. Wow. the resentment and fear that might start to grow? Maybe the distancing from everyone to stay safe because you can't take changes. mhhh

Name: Ustura (oos-too-rah) Age: 30 Species: Indian Red Scorpion hybrid Personality: Serious, cold, evil, manipulative, easily annoyed, cunning Likes: Winning, seeing humans and animals flee in terror, mocking Nature Healers' efforts, sun bathing, seeing her master pleased, mango juice Dislikes: Nature Healers, sight of friendship, losing, Reina Terrastone, dealing with Crotalus and Gyps comically arguements/fights, her plans failing, getting yelled at by her master Theme color: Red/Orange and Yellow as sub color Weapon: Sabaku monster Bio: Ustura is one of the 3 Generals of the Predatrons and the sole female who's also the leader. She alongside Crotalus and Gyps serve the Boss of the Predatrons as their main mission is to exact his vengence against Mother Nature for banishing them by taking over Earth as their global territory. Fun Facts: Ustura gets annoyed by Crotalus and Gyps' typical arguments, she would usually end it by slamming their heads against each other comically. When getting angry, she lifted up her hair/stinger in a most threatening manner. One sting from the tip of the stinger will make you feel very weak and sick. She's used her scorpion legs for her to boost up her speed and uses her swift kick attacks. She takes her mission seriously that she scolds at Gyps and Crotalus for each failure in their mission and reminds them about how would their master feel, if they fail again.

Demon Lord 2099 - I watched the first 7 episodes and it was good, but the end of the seventh episode really felt like a natural ending spot and it kept dropping down my watch order until I eventually dropped it.

The Healer Who Was Banished From His Party, Is, in Fact the Strongest - It really felt like nothing was happening and it didn't feel like it was going anywhere either.

Another Journey to the West - I gave it 3 episodes and it just never fully caught my interest so I dropped it.

Delico's Nursery - Nothing particularly bad about it, it just got pushed out by a stacked season

Izuku stopped walking through the hall of the small cabin once he heard a pained hiss, turning his head to the partially opened bathroom door. The boy moved slowly and peaked inside. He saw Seven biting her lower lip, and a feeling of worry coursed through his mind.

He opened the door to see her sitting on the closed toilet, trying to bandage herself. The bandage from the day before was on the small bin, which he saw was now covered with blood. It seemed like she was trying her hardest but having trouble doing so.

She looked up to see Izuku staring at her.

“Hey…” she said lowly, trying to seem casual about the wound on her leg that was now bleeding from her being too harsh with her tactics.

Izuku sighed and walked in. He still felt bad that she had taken the bullet for him during the Quirk Farm incident. She had pushed him aside and saved him from certain death, and the result was now sitting right in front of him. He kneeled onto the cool tile floor, placing his hands on her knees, gently pushing her legs apart to get a better look at the wound. The action made the villainess jump in shock. “What are you-“

Izuku felt that his actions took the villainess by surprise. The boy was completely oblivious to the way her face flared up and instead moved straight to the business of why he went into the bathroom in the first place.

"It seemed like maybe you could use a hand. What do you need?" He spoke calmly and softly to her, his hands moving to gently examine her leg wound.

As his fingertips gently traced around her brown skin, she tensed up, unsure of how to react. “I mean, I just had to change the bandages. Last thing I need is another wound infection.” She grimaced at the thought of putting up with a bothersome problem like that.

She watched Izuku grab a small cotton ball, dipping it in the rubbing alcohol before gazing at her with his cool jade eyes, trying to gauge if she was okay with him touching her. His lips formed into a soft smile as he looked at her.

"May I?"

Seven was still new to the whole ‘trusting’ thing so she still seemed hesitant despite the progress they had made.

After a second of contemplation, she nodded slowly, giving him her consent to do what was needed. She gripped the edges of the toilet lid in preparation for the incoming sting of rubbing alcohol.

Izuku's lips remained in a soft smile, taking her nod as the consent he was looking for. He then took the cotton ball and proceeded to gently press the soaked ball onto her leg wound.

She'd be able to feel the cold sting of the liquid against her sore leg. Once he finished applying the rubbing alcohol on the wound, he spoke to her, his voice being soft as warm as it had before.

"Just breathe out. It'll be over in a bit."

She did as he instructed, releasing the long breath she was holding. The girl watched as the hero wrapped her leg with such precision. He was a hero in training after all, he’d half to know how to help civilians if no other healers were available.

Her cooperation made the boy relax, knowing now she was more lenient with allowing him to aid her in her wounds. Izuku then glanced up at the girl, glad she was being very compliant, making the moment all that more special. His tone was still ever so soft as he spoke, a calm, cool demeanor permeating into his words.

"There we go. The worst part is done. I have to ask though, how are you feeling?"

Seven blinked and inspected his work, seeing that he was much better at it than she was. Then again, she rarely gets injured this badly so she hasn’t gotten too much practice with it.

“I’m okay.” She mumbled as she looked away.

The boy smirked when she averted his gaze, finding it to be funny that she was embarrassed in this situation. His eyes then followed her gaze as she looked away, his smile growing even bigger when he noticed how she chewed on her lower lip, a nervous habit.

"You know you can look at me, right?" He spoke in a low, almost teasing voice.

She scoffed at his words but kept her eyes glued to the shower curtain beside her, an obstinate look on her face.

"I know that…”

Izuku chuckled a bit at her stubbornness, the villainess looking somewhat childlike in her defiance. Though his lips were still pulled into a smile, his eyes were still soft, observing her in a caring manner.

His hand moved to place a warm hand on her chin, tilting her head so that she was looking at him once more.

"Then, look at me."

Seven sighed, allowing him to direct her head down to him. She was trying to get over her pride for him, trying her best to be humble and reciprocate his kinder energy.

It was harder than she initially thought. She wanted to wipe that smirk off his face more than anything.

A small, triumphant smile came to his lips as she looked at him. Just seeing how she acted made it evident that her defenses were starting to lower around him, as she continued to try and be kinder to him, even if it was just for a little bit.

He was content in that.

Seven huffed, standing up to return the first aid back to its designated cubby. "Thanks." She muttered, bending over to place it in the cabinet under the sink.

"No need to thank me, I’m glad you felt comfortable enough to let me aid you." He replied.

She rose and turned to him, leaning onto the sink counter. "I meant...thanks for what you did yesterday. I've never cried like that in my entire life." She whispered; her amber eyes downcast.

The boy was caught off guard by her admission. It was a vulnerable truth, one that she would normally never address. His gaze flitted to her face as she looked down a bit.

"Of course..." He whispered back.

They both stood in silence for a moment. It didn't feel tense. In fact, Seven felt as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders by Izuku's presence.

He felt happy she let him see the more vulnerable sides of her personality, despite her initially hard exterior.

"Sev...Is it alright if I visit you every now and then?" Izuku asked, walking over to her, placing his hands on either side of the counter, caging here between the sink and his body. He meant nothing about the action but Seven still felt heat creeping up her neck at the proximity.

The villainess hummed, looking up at him. "Sev?" She repeated, a smile pulling at her lips.

Izuku raised an amused eyebrow, matching her energy. "You do like the nickname, don't you?" He teased, an uncharacteristically smug smirk on his stupid face .

She chuckled. "Call me that in front of other people and I'll kill you myself." The girl warned, no real venom in her words. "But...sure. I'd like it if you'd visit me." She whispered, leaning over him, her lips inches from him. "Try to be discreet about it though." The girl continued, as if their whole alliance wasn't already under the wraps from the public.

When she leaned forward, it threw him off. His ears burned crimson red when he saw her lips so close to his, her words sounding suggestive to him. "Are you trying to do something here?" He inquired, trying to stand his ground, but there was an underlying giddiness to his tone.

"Noooo... Whatever do you mean? I'm just warning you. Wouldn't want anyone to know you're in cahoots with a villain now, do you? It'd be a shame if they knew what I let you get away with." She chuckled, gently playing with one of his curly locks, tugging it and watching it bounce back into place softly.

Her words only served to worsen the heat creeping through his veins, her actions even not helping him recover in the slightest. Izuku scoffed playfully at her words.

"Is this your way of saying you still want me?" His tone was quiet, but his eyes seemed to communicate that he was willing to humor her. She had him in a very vulnerable position, and he wasn't entirely against it.

"You already know the answer to that." She muttered in his ear.

Izuku's heart throbbed. Her words echoed through his head so tenderly and teasingly. Seven was riling him up yet again. That alone was enough to make his heart skip several beats. Her tone sounded as playful as it was when they fought each other in the city streets, constantly chipping at his resolve with that tone that promised excitement that no other foe could provide him.

Before anything could escalate, she pushed him aside, cackling as she sauntered out of the bathroom in a way that felt almost taunting to the hero. He blushed a bit more as he saw her give him one last goading glance over her shoulder before stepping out of view. Was she attempting to tease the boy even more? Either way, it was working. 

A soft chuckle escaped him as he shook his head, following after her. He wouldn't let her get away with that so easily.

Omg okay so like yeah! That form in the vat fight for demon lord was amazing! I love his attitude, because like he almost seems like an idiot haha. But that fight proved he is definitely just lacking knowledge or care for certain edict. The new episode was really good! I love their new little apartment I felt so bad for machina losing her apartment she deserves a new place 😭😭.

Alright soo that whole play in the healer one! And his horn in that from in the hydra fight. I think he may be the dragon from the tale with the blue haired maiden. Like it's dormant inside him. It's got such a oddly chill vibe to it though it has been really nice.

Let this grieving soul retire and the most notorious talker definitely take the cake for best anime this season. Like both of the main characters are amazing in their own right.

Krai may say he doesn't have any power. But I'm pretty sure without him as the anchor the rest of grieving souls would be causing unknown fuckin terror across the lands lmao. Not a single one so far seems anywhere close to normal. Stiri literally used and turned a bunched of dudes in to a single puppet and went teehee it could be better next time 👀. Like 👀👀. Dude is the only thing stopping 5 world ending catastrophes.

Also the whole reveal of the fuckin masks omg 😂😂 .
