Ok here’s a whole essay’s worth of headcanons about some of the LOTR main characters’ lives in the Fourth Age, particularly their children.
(note: some of these names and marriages I’ve invented, and some I’ve borrowed from Elenya54’s phenomenal fics “All That I Had” and “The Gift of Ilúvatar,” which have many elements that I’ve absorbed into my hc, including Frodo leaving letters for Sam & Elanor and jewelry for Rosie, as well as Legolas ending up with Frodo’s healer’s daughter. Elanor & Fastred’s historian work is mentioned in Tolkien’s appendices. Frodo-lad’s love of dwarves and Rosie-lass’ love of the Entwives are taken from Tolkien’s unpublished epilogue.)
I have bolded all of the named characters that I’ve invented (some are named after canonical figures and some have original names).
All dates in Shire Reckoning.
Frodo wrote Sam a love letter before he left Middle-earth, which Sam carried in his waistcoat pocket close to his heart every day.
Frodo also left a letter for Elanor to read when she was older, letting her know how much he loved her and how sorry he was that he could not be there to watch her grow; he signed the letter “your Frodo-dad,” to which Rosie referred to him as she firmly felt that her daughter had two fathers in her life before Frodo had to leave. This is why Elanor called her father “Sam-dad” all her life.
Frodo left Rosie a set of freshly-polished jewelry (necklace, earrings, and bracelet) that once belonged to his mother Primula. Rosie always cherished these trinkets and wore them to every formal event she ever attended; she lent them to Elanor to wear at her wedding to Fastred.
Sam & Rosie’s entire family adopted the Gardner surname in the year 1424.
Sam taught all his children to read and write in both Westron and Sindarin. He was known as “the People’s Mayor,” as he helped the rich and poor alike. He came to know everyone in Hobbiton, regardless of class, on a first-name basis. He advocated for literacy in the entirety of the Shire, and his agenda ultimately modernized the Shire and created new opportunities for education, including the land’s first-ever public school in Michel Delving. He managed to change many conservative minds who used to not believe in the importance of reading by emphasizing how he only was able to accomplish what he did because of the knowledge he gained from Bilbo Baggins. He also personally planted many public and private gardens in the Shire, including a memorial garden for Frodo in the Party Field; his continuation of manual labor despite his affluent position went a long way in weaking the previously strict Shire social class system.
The efforts to rebuild after the Scouring, combined with Sam’s rise from lowly gardener to Master of Bag End and Mayor, shook up the class system. Many formerly upper- and middle-class families who had lost big chunks of their fortunes in repairing the Ruffians’ damage turned to manual labor to help the work move faster. It was a humbling experience for many, and the working class gained more respect than it’d ever had before. Sam’s brothers and cousins had their hands full taking on apprentices to learn their skills and help out. As a result, the Fourth Age saw more employment for hobbits than ever before; the bourgeois lifestyle became far less common.
Rosie became a leader in her own right, helping all the poorer hobbits in one way or another. She threw many parties at Bag End, including an annual celebration on September 22nd in honor of Bilbo and Frodo. Having been taught to read and write by Sam as a child (who passed on Bilbo’s lessons to her curious mind), she set her husband’s educational goals into motion by becoming a part-time tutor for hobbit children once her own children were older and in less need of her constant care. Many of the hobbits she tutored went on to become schoolteachers. She became extremely popular and respected, and when she died, a major party was thrown in her honor that went down in Shire history alongside Bilbo’s famous party.
Legolas and Gimli paid visits to the Shire as often as they could.
Elanor was a lifelong bibliophile and linguist. While working for Queen Arwen, she became fluent in Sindarin and translated many Elvish texts in the library. She was far more interested in the Elvish language and culture than any of her siblings. Besides Elfstan and Fíriel, she and Fastred also had 4 other children: Frodo, Astred, Arwen, and Rosemary. The couple led the Westmarch community together, doing a lot of impactful philanthropic work, and created an extensive library filled with historical records of the Shire, as well as Elves and Men, all the information that Elanor could compile while working in Gondor. Elanor also was struck with many dreams throughout her life of events in the Red Book, as she vividly imagined all the descriptions she heard and read so many times. A natural empath, she developed a deep understanding of Frodo’s suffering post-quest - mainly because of the personal connection she felt with him through his letter to her - and wrote several volumes of original poetry in both Westron and Sindarin, inspired by her two fathers. She became a beloved celebrity in the Shire, and eventually throughout Middle-earth when the Queen requested and published a copy of her work (with her permission). She, her husband, and their children continued to visit Gondor through the years and maintained a lifelong friendship with the royal family. Elanor eventually surpassed Bilbo Baggins as the oldest-lived hobbit in Middle-earth history, living to the age of 133.
Frodo-lad shared his father’s deep passion for gardening and they worked together on the flowers and vegetables at Bag End every day. He often teamed up with Elanor, his best friend as well as his sister, to help their parents manage their younger siblings growing up. He developed a love of Dwarves after reading about them in the Red Book; Gimli once created and gifted to him a harmless toy dwarf axe for his birthday. He was as skilled a scholar as Elanor, but didn’t enjoy it as much as she did, preferring the outdoors. However, he did help her with her research on Shire history for her library and eventually wrote his own book on gardening. He later married a hobbit lass named Violet, who hailed from the Bunce family. Besides Holfast, they had 3 other children: Heather, Wilfred, and Lavender. Frodo eventually became Mayor after his father retired and inherited Bag End when his father left the Shire. By this time, enough residents of Hobbiton had learned to read to enable him to open the town’s first-ever public library, which included copies of his own gardening book. The title of Mayor was later taken up by Holfast after his own retirement, and then later by Holfast’s son Harding of the Hill.
Rosie-lass was an in-demand artist who sketched and painted illustrations for the Red Book as well as portraits and landscapes which were given away as mathoms. The walls of Bag End were covered with her art. Framed in her and her sisters’ bedroom was her favorite creation: a drawing of a fantasy in which she found the lost Entwives. She later married Fredegar Bolger’s son Rudecar and they had 7 children.
Young Merry eventually took over operation of the mill formerly owned by the Sandymans and purchased by Frodo after the Scouring. He married Robin Smallburrow’s daughter Hazel and they had 3 children.
Young Pippin became a skilled furniture maker and married one of Fredegar Bolger’s daughters, Jessaminta. They had 5 children.
(The mother of Fredegar Bolger’s children was his wife Angelica Baggins, the last of the Baggins bloodline. Sam and Rosie were thrilled that their family was united with one of Baggins descent via Rosie-lass and Pippin’s marriages.)
As per canon, Goldilocks married Pippin Took’s son Faramir. They had 6 children and eventually became the heads of the Took family. Goldilocks loved to cook with her mother as a child and later insisted on helping the cooks at the Great Smials hands-on with preparing meals, class system be buggered. She and her husband made sure to pass this egalitarian mindset onto their children.
Hamfast loved the story of the Ents so much that he dedicated his life to forestry. He married Malva, who hailed from the Burrows family, and they had 3 children.
Daisy inherited her father’s knack for songwriting and composed many tunes which she eagerly performed at parties. She sang at all her siblings’ weddings. She herself married and had 4 children with Merry’s son Théodoc.
Primrose, a tomboy all the way, inherited her father’s talent with knots and became Hobbiton’s exclusive roper, alongside her cousin Anson’s latest apprentice, Nico Goodbody; they married and had 3 children.
Bilbo enjoyed a simple life working for the Quick Post and co-owning a bakery with his wife Azalea Hayward (daughter of Shirriff Hob), with whom he had 2 daughters.
Ruby became fascinated with medicine and eventually took on a career as a midwife. She was deeply moved by Frodo’s words in the Red Book about cherishing the beloved land that was saved by him and her father, and she took it upon herself to help bring the next generation of hobbits into the world to honor his wishes. She eventually married and had 5 children with Pippin’s son Beregond.
Robin followed in his namesake’s footsteps and became a Shirriff. He married Merry’s daughter Éowyn and they raised their 4 children in Frodo’s former residence at Crickhollow.
Tom became a merchant, traveling constantly between Gondor and the Shire. He never married but had a lifelong partnership with Pippin’s youngest son Beren. The two of them looked after the old hobbit in his final years in Minas Tirith, as he needed walking sticks to help him move due to lasting effects of troll-inflicted wounds. They shared their luxurious house with Pippin until his eventual death at age 106, two years after Merry had succumbed to a long illness in Pippin’s arms at age 112. Tom himself became quite an adventurer, retracing the Fellowship’s steps and sightseeing all of the quest’s locations with Beren. They both eventually rose in esteem to become advisors to the king.
Many times, but even more so in his later years, Sam had dreams of the Sea.
All of the children moved out of Bag End when they married, except Frodo-lad, who raised his own family in Bag End while also looking after his aging parents.
When Rosie fell ill for the last time, Sam and Frodo-lad summoned all 12 of Frodo’s siblings to Bag End, and they all were present in their mother’s last moments. On her deathbed, Rosie bequeathed Primula’s jewelry to Elanor.
Before sailing West, Sam showed Frodo’s love letter to Tom, Beren, and later Elanor. Although he never saw the letter, Frodo-lad also sensed his father’s true feelings for his namesake. They were the only members of their generation to be aware of Frodo & Sam’s secret romance; they honored Sam’s wish that this detail be kept private and left out of all records.
Elanor, Fastred, Frodo-lad, Goldilocks, Faramir, and Pearl all collaborated on the creation of the Thain’s Book, mainly working on it in the two years between Elanor’s inheriting of the original book and Pippin’s impending departure, which he was already considering and discussing with his family even before Éomer wrote to Merry.
When Sam sailed, he took with him several flower seed packets to plant in the West, a stash of Old Toby, letters for Frodo from the rest of the Fellowship (updating him on their lives and families), and a book of Elanor’s poetry which she intended as a present for Frodo. He also was given a small trinket from each of his children, which he kept and cherished as mementos of them. He left the Star of the Dúnedain and Sting to Frodo-lad, and both became cherished Gardner family heirlooms.
Sam happily reunited with Frodo on Tol Eressëa. Since time passed differently there, Frodo had not aged. Sam’s physical youth was gradually restored by the island’s rejuvenating energy, as was Bilbo’s. The couple lived happily together in a hobbit hole which Frodo had built for Sam.
In his time on the island, besides being fully healed by the combined efforts of Gandalf, Elrond, a Vanya healer, and Nienna herself, Frodo became good friends with Celebrían, as they understood each other’s similar reasons for sailing West. He became a gardener, realizing how much knowledge he absorbed from Sam through the years, and helped tend to many Elves’ private gardens as well as his own, and also became fluent in Quenya as a necessity for communication.
When Sam had settled in, Frodo taught him to speak Quenya and to swim.
Bilbo eventually chose to lay down his life after leaving nothing unsaid between him and the younger hobbits. However, Frodo and Sam continued on, and were still living when Legolas and Gimli finally arrived. They and Gandalf enjoyed many happy times together, especially at the beach, and reminisced about their lost friends.
When the hobbits finally accepted their mortality together, lying in each other’s arms after saying all their goodbyes, their bodies were laid side-by-side in their garden near Bilbo’s body, and their now-vacant hobbit hole became a permanent memorial for them. They left all of their possessions to be placed within a historical museum in Avallónë, containing artifacts from all the ages of the world. A second, more traditionally Elvish memorial for them was built near that museum.
Pippin & Diamond were friends since tweenhood, but only saw each other in a platonic light for many years, and Pippin had some fun flirting with and trying to impress lasses when he returned from the Quest. An avid reader, Diamond was fascinated by the stories of what happened to him. But she was also an unusually empathetic and insightful hobbit, and she could sense that not all of Pippin’s adventures were fun, and that he had some lingering trauma. She became his safe space to talk to, and they quickly fell in love. As Tolkien put in canon, they finally married in 1427 (when Diamond was 32 and not even of age yet, as they couldn’t wait any longer) and the heir to the Thainship was their son Faramir, born in 1430, who later married Goldilocks. Here’s my version of the rest of their family:
Faramir took after Diamond more than Pippin. He had his sense of humor but had a sense of responsibility much earlier on in life and grew to be a fine leader in his own right, long before becoming Thain. He bonded closely with his namesake during a year-long visit to Gondor in which he served as a page to the King. He overcame Goldilocks’ shyness toward boys via their lifelong friendship from childhood that blossomed into more in their tweens.
Once Faramir was born, Pippin & Diamond realized that they loved parenting and wanted a big family, not unlike Sam & Rosie. They wanted to take on the adventure together and they did. Diamond wanted all her children to have special unconventional names and encouraged Pippin to borrow names of people he met on his quest and who he’d read about. Pippin agreed as long as his wife agreed to allow herself her own honor by naming all their daughters after jewels like her. They visited Gondor together often.
Their 1st daughter Pearl was born in 1433. An introvert, she preferred to read and draw than go to parties. A natural scholar like her mother, she was responsible for the cultivation of the Great Smials’ library, collecting and writing much of the history of Gondor, helped largely by her youngest brother’s frequent travels to the kingdom. She eventually married into the Goodbody family to Elio, brother of Nico (who married Primrose Gardner). They had 2 children.
2nd son Boromir was born in 1436. He helped his older brother keep their younger siblings in check. He initially in his youth felt hurt that he was named after the man who tried to steal the Ring, but as he grew older and came to understand the full story better, he came to deeply admire and respect his namesake. He opened a law firm alongside his best friend Estel Brandybuck, and married Fredegar Bolger’s youngest daughter, Miramunda; they had 7 children.
3rd son Beregond was born in 1438. He worked as an auctioneer and married Sam & Rosie’s daughter Ruby. See above.
Twins Bergil (boy) and Opal (girl) were born in 1440.
Bergil followed in his grandfather Paladin’s footsteps and made a living from farming the fertile earth of Tuckborough. His sister-in-law Goldilocks was helpful in this endeavor, as she arranged for him to gain experience in his youth by helping her mother’s family, the Cottons, at their own farm for a year. He married and had 3 children with Lydia Hornblower.
Opal founded the Shire’s first theatrical company and wrote many plays that retold the full story of the Fellowship. It was her plays that enlightened the rest of the Shire regarding the extent of Frodo Baggins’ sacrifice, and his reputation vastly improved as much of the population finally understood his heroism. Opal married into the Grubb family to a lad named Aldo, and they also had 3 children.
When she heard the story of Beren and Lúthien for the first time while pregnant with Emerald, Diamond loved it so much that she insisted they name their next boy after Beren.
3rd daughter Emerald was born in 1443, named in honor of her great-aunt Esmeralda Brandybuck. She married into the Burrows family to Marco, brother of Malva (who married Hamfast Gardner). They opened an affluent restaurant together near the Three-Farthing Stone, which blended Shire cuisine with those of Gondor and Rohan via recipes collected by Emerald’s father and “Uncle Merry”. They also had 2 children.
5th son and youngest child, Beren, was born in 1446. He never married but had a romantic life partner in Sam & Rosie’s son Tom, with whom he worked as a merchant. See above.
After many happy years, Diamond died at age 86 in 1481, six months before Rosie’s passing. She held on until she heard the news that her youngest grandchild had been born safely earlier that day.
Estella pursued Merry for many years until she finally won him over. They married the same year that Faramir Took was born, and decided they wanted a smaller family than the Gardners and the Tooks. They ultimately had 4 children:
1st son Théodoc was born in 1432. Merry knew he wanted to name his firstborn after his late king; Estella agreed, admiring the king greatly from her husband’s stories, but wanted to continue the tradition of giving the future Master a name ending in “-doc.” This was their compromise. Théodoc was a born scholar like his father and helped him put together his book on old words and names. He later married Sam & Rosie’s daughter Daisy; they became the Master and Mistress of Buckland when Merry left the Shire for the last time.
2nd son Estel was born in 1436. His parents were amazed at how perfectly the name worked as a tribute to both Aragorn and to Estella herself. Estel was a mama’s boy and never minded his name’s resemblance to hers, even before making the thrilling discovery that he was also named for a king. He opened a law firm with his best friend Boromir. On a family trip to Bree, Estel met a real Underhill, named Amelia; they instantly fell in love and he brought her home to Buckland as his bride. They bore 3 children.
1st daughter Éowyn was born in 1439. She worshipped and maintained a lifelong friendship with her namesake, who sent her birthday presents every year, and in whose footsteps she followed by becoming the Shire’s most reliable healer. She also helped her father gather research for his herblore books, and gained much knowledge of herbal medicines from this project. She later married Sam & Rosie’s son Robin; they first got together when Tom & Beren played matchmaker.
2nd daughter Athela was born in 1441, named after Athelas in honor of her father’s love of herbs and her mother’s appreciation for the specific herb that saved her father’s life. She married into the Goldworthy family and had 3 children with her husband Fabian. She shared her sister’s passion for independent thinking and eventually became a teacher at the Shire’s first public school.
Merry was the first of the Travellers to be widowed, as Estella passed in 1480 at age 95. The following year, Athela named her newborn 3rd child after her mother.
As Tolkien wrote, Aragorn & Arwen’s firstborn was Eldarion, born in 1422, who eventually succeeded his father as king and created a long-lasting dynasty. According to me, Eldarion was followed by three younger sisters:
Melíriel was born in 1425. She remained in close touch with her Elvish roots and arranged for the history of Elves and Men to be taught in all of Gondor’s schools. It was for her and her sister’s sake that her parents were inspired to issue a law requiring girls to be educated as well as boys. She later married Elboron, son of Faramir & Éowyn (b. 1424), and they became Prince and Princess of Ithilien after Elboron’s parents’ deaths, and helped Legolas restore the land to its former glory. Their son Barahir wrote The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen (Tolkien canon).
Twins Celebrithil and Gilraeloth were born in 1429.
Celebrithil was a linguist and expert diplomat and helped her father with peace talks among the Southern and Eastern lands, made easier when she became fluent in the languages spoken by the Haradrim. She was close friends with Elanor, as they shared a passion for learning languages.
Gilraeloth was a tomboy who joined the remaining Rangers of the North in patrolling the woodlands of Arnor, eventually marrying a fellow Ranger.
All four of Aragorn & Arwen’s children were raised bilingual in Westron and Sindarin. The Sindarin language became common in Gondor once again, and was taught in schools.
Eldarion oversaw the restoration of Osgiliath alongside his father.
Aragorn also arranged for absolute premogeniture in the Reunited Kingdom’s line of succession, echoing the similar policy of Númenor.
Two centuries later, Eldarion laid down his life and passed the throne to his firstborn, Minyarían, who became the first Ruling Queen (regnant) of Gondor. Her younger sister was Nénaloth.
After another two centuries, Minyarían laid down her life and passed the throne to her firstborn, her son Iorhael (the Quenya translation of ‘Frodo’).
Also, in Ithilien:
Besides Elboron, Faramir & Éowyn had a daughter, Rohawyn (b. 1427), who became a healer like her mother. She exchanged much information with her close friends from the Shire, the hobbits Ruby Gardner and Éowyn Brandybuck.
The line of succession for the rule of Ithilien was made into an absolute primogeniture policy by Aragorn at Éowyn’s insistence. Thus, Elboron was eventually succeeded by his eldest child, his daughter Elwing.
Elwing was eventually succeeded by her eldest son Théoden. She also had a daughter, Haleth, and a younger son, Beren.
As for Legolas and Gimli:
Gimli was gray and aged when he and Legolas sailed West, but had a few steps left in him.
On his last journey, Legolas took with him three important items: a scrapbook of drawings of Arwen’s family compiled by her; a collection of letters for Sam from his surviving children, all of whom he had stayed in touch with through the years (especially Elanor and Tom); and his own copy of the Red Book in Quenya, which he’d made himself in Gondor from the Thain’s Book in order to keep the details of the story recorded for the populace of Valinor.
Upon arriving in the West, Legolas fulfilled his Queen Arwen’s last request to him and delivered the scrapbook to Elrond and Celebrían as a gift to them from her. Through the scrapbook, the bereaved couple were able to see their grandchildren and recognize that their daughter lived a happy and full life.
Gimli and Legolas were thrilled to reunite with the hobbits on Eressëa, having hoped they’d still be alive. At the hobbits’ insistence, the Elf and Dwarf joined them to live in their home.
Gimli bonded with the Elves who specialized in mining and delving on the island, and eventually learned Quenya.
Legolas fell in love with Laurëalotë, a Vanya resident of Tol Eressëa and the daughter of Frodo’s healer. He also finally reunited with his mother, Tatheryn, who had accompanied her best friend Celebrían to the West many years prior after they both had been ambushed by Orcs, and met his re-embodied grandparents, Oropher and Nellas, for the first time. (Nellas had sacrificed herself protecting young Thranduil during the Third Kinslaying.)
After the hobbits’ deaths, Legolas and Gimli could not bear to live in the hobbit hole without them, so they accepted Elrond and Celebrían’s invitation to live with them for a while.
Gimli, being 260 years old when he sailed, ultimately lived to the age of 330. When his time came, he was given an honorary burial in Avallónë. The loss was extremely difficult for Legolas, but his friends and family all rallied to help him through his grief.
Many years after the hobbits and Gimli had finally passed on, Legolas married Laurëalotë and they had two daughters, Eryniel and Galadheth. They settled on the island and often visited the memorials of their late friends.
Gandalf sailed on to Valinor. His reward from the Valar for his deeds was to travel freely among the Blessed Realm whenever he pleased, no longer bound to be a servant. Thus, he often visited Legolas and the memorials on the nearby island.
Legolas’ copy of the Red Book became the most cherished item in his household, as he read the story to his wife, daughters, and grandchildren, and kept it alive forever.
For the rest of time, Gandalf and Legolas personally reminisced about the Fellowship, and their memories of and love for their friends never faded.
The Last Ship sailed from the Grey Havens in the year 189 of the Fourth Age. Among those onboard were Círdan, Celeborn, Thranduil, Elladan, Elrohir, Daeron, and one Elf who had long served his repentance through many lonely millennia in Middle-Earth and was at last granted passage back to his homeland: Maglor.

Told Ya She'd Say Yes
requested by @frodo-cinnamon-roll. Thx for requesting :)!
***Frodo's POV***
I sighed, staring at the bar where Rosie Cotton, and lovely y/n worked. Both were chatting happily to each other as they did their duties. It's been a few months since we came back to the Shire. I've always had a crush on y/n, even before my quest began. Sam had already proposed to Rosie, which happened just a couple of months ago.
Now, I wanted to ask y/n out. But I didn't know how. And I was too scared.
"Hello? Frodo, are ou even listening?" Merry asked. He waved his hand in my face, trying to catch my attention.
And it worked. I snapped back to reality after staring at y/n from afar.
"Sorry. Wasn't paying attention," I answered quickly as I turned to face my friends again.
"Oh. Staring at y/n, are we?" Pippin smirked. He gave me a teasing wink.
My cheeks burned a bright pink color.
"Of course, I don't," I hastily replied.
"Yes, you do. You've been staring at her for the past thirty minutes, man," Merry interrupted. "You should ask her out by now."
"I can't, Merry. I'm too shy," I tried to argue.
"C'mon!" groaned Merry. "You went into Mount Doom and managed to destroy the Ring. And you think that asking y/n out is harder than that?" He stared at me in disbelief.
The duo pressured me for a bit. Sam just sat to the side, smoking his pipe. He didn't want to get himself involved, and I didn't blame him.
"I'm sure she'll say yes, Mr. Frodo," he finally encouraged. "I was scared to death when I asked Rosie to marry me a couple weeks ago, even though I knew she'd say yes. We're not close to Miss y/n, but I can tell that she adores you, even if she just watches from afar."
"See?" Pippin added. "You should ask her!"
Both Merry and Pippin shoved me towards her, and I nervously approached y/n. My hands were sweating profusely by the time I got there. I waited patiently as y/n collected orders from two other male Hobbits, who were drunkenly commenting her. That caused me to be a bit jealous. But she paid no heed to them, much to my relief.
She finally turned to me, smiling slightly. I could see a pink blush creeping up her cheeks, and she quickly avoided my gaze.
"C-Can I help you, Mr. Baggins?" she asked shyly.
"Well. . . . .," I began, wondering how I should start off my confession. "I actually have something to tell you, y/n."
She raised an eyebrow, looking really suspicious. Well, no turning back, now. It's now or never.
"Go on," she said. She sat herself down on the counter.
I took a deep breath, trying to control myself.
"I — I was wondering if you'd — if you'd like to go on a date with me?" I asked, stuttering and stumbling in between words. She stared at me in surprise, and I could feel a sense of dread settling in the pit of my stomach.
Maybe she didn't want to be with me at all.
I found myself blushing hard. This was not how I wanted things to go.
"I-I'm sorry!" I stuttered, unsure of what to say. I — I wasn't sure of what you'd say. Or if you wanted to go on a date at all! It's alright if you don't want to. I understand —"
I was cut off when I felt a pair of soft lips pressing against mine. At first, my heart stopped, and I didn't know how to react. I soon responded by wrapping my arms hesitantly around her waist. When she let go, she looked me directly in the eyes.
"Of course, I want to, Mr. Baggins," she answered.
My heart soared when I heard her say that.
"Tomorrow evening, then? If you're free?" I asked.
"That sounds great."
"I'll see you, then," I breathlessly replied.
I looked at her one last time before cheerfully making my way back to my friends. I noticed that both Merry and Pippin had triumphant smirks on their faces.
"What?" I asked casually once I sat back down.
"Told ya she'd say yes," Pippin replied.
"Shut up," I replied as I stared wistfully after y/n again.

Note
Can I have three one-shots based LOTR franchise?
1. Frodo x M reader by the end of the journey, when you know Sam reflecting about Rosie, Frodo reflects on how much this journey tested his and M reader’s romantic relationship. To the point when Sam and M reader recused Frodo from the orc tower, M reader got stabbed and had a near death experience. So Frodo worries of his boyfriend dying of his wounds where he defended Frodo. So as the three, weakly wait eagles Frodo tenderly holds M reader hand. Can flash forward to him waking and yes everyone celebrating the ring being destroyed, yet unfortunately M reader not going to make it, but he does tell Frodo how much he loves him and reflects on the journey. Another time skip in the Green Dragon where Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry reflect, Pippin with Merry and bits of Sam and Frodo, give an on the spot speech to M reader, and Frodo cheers to singing. Frodo could be looking down at his hand with tears as a makeshift ring from M reader gave him as a promise ring made of rope, when the fellowship broke, and Frodo kisses it thinking of M Reader. If can transition to him opening his eyes on the boat and sees Sam, Merry, and Pippin gives a teary smile as he goes to the Grey Heavans? (I am sorry if so emotionally I just want a some angst ).
2. Frodo x M reader in what it be like to date Frodo and this version can have M reader live(maybe he waited for Frodo too as opposed joined the journey, but like in the books fought with Hobbits against the Orcs envision to protect the Shire) and the two reflect on how different things were before the quest. Like the two were very more lovey dovey men kissing under fireworks being bashful to be PDA, but not mind. Compared after the war, the two yes are more confidently open in hand holding, but have a more matured love. Like walking together and reading by the other in front of a fire. Sure unfortunately the war still ways heavy on the two but you know they are both reflecting the growth they have made.
3. Awern x M reader. Now before anyone sends hate she and Aragon I agree are a great pair, but cut a guy slack for wanting to have a one-shot of a date with Awern leading to very VERY romantic sex. The song that inspired this was Broken Iris’ “Forevermore”, the lyrics are such poetry.
Hi there!
Of course! Since this is a series of three requests, expect as always a two to three-week return wait on the first one and then a subsequent two to three-weeks for the next one and so on and so forth.
I am so happy to write my first non-Hazbin requests!
Love,
Dewdrop/Dewy

Stupid Domestic Headcanons for the Bag End Household
(Yes I know this is AU just shut up and let me have this)
The Gamgee kids call Frodo “Uncle”
Sam initially tried teaching them to say “Mr. Frodo” all proper-like, because it’s the respectful way for folks like them to address a gentlehobbit
But the grown-ups—especially Merry and Pippin—would occasionally say “Uncle Frodo” as a joke, and the kids caught on to that started saying it non-ironically
To Sam’s mortification, Frodo encouraged this
By the fifth child Sam just gave up and let the “Uncle Frodo” thing stick
Frodo plays favorites
He will vehemently deny this. How DARE you insinuate he has a favorite Gamgee child, that’s preposterous, he couldn’t possibly choose just one, he loves them all equally and favoring one over the others would be like choosing a favorite from his own children and it’s Elanor
The first time he held her, she was one and a half hours old and extremely tiny—not tiny for a newborn, but tiny for anyone without much experience with newborns—and his brain did a speed-run of recontextualizing his entire life and realizing that the sacrifices that he made to destroy the Ring were exactly what made the world safe for this tiny, wrinkled, fragile little Hobbit baby to grow up happy and free and whole and he absolutely broke down crying
She’s been his favorite ever since
She hangs out in his study in her free time and talks about whatever is on her mind while he’s busy translating Elvish texts or whatever
She’ll tell him about her day—about the runaway sheep that she helped chase back into the neighbor’s pen or the embroidery sample she did that day or the neighbor boy down the lane whom she thinks is cute—and he’ll nod and hum in acknowledgment and ask small clarifying questions until she gets bored of talking and then she’ll ask “what are you doing?” and he’ll launch into a detailed academic lecture about history or geography or linguistics
She actually understands pretty well. Partly because she’s a bright student, and partly because he’s a good teacher and skilled at simplifying things so she understands them.
Elanor will randomly whip out a random factoid about ye olden Gondorian king while she’s potting flowers in the garden and Sam will immediately shoot a look at Frodo that’s both impressed and exasperated
On that note, Frodo takes it upon himself to see that any Gamgee child who is interested will know how to read
Rosie listens in on the lessons and learns along with her kids
She actually learned her letters towards the end of her first pregnancy; as soon as she got so big and tired that she spent more time moping around the house than helping Sam in the garden, Frodo took the opportunity to distract her with the alphabet
One of the first texts he used as a primer for Rosie was Bilbo’s “cow jumped over the moon” poem
Sam thought this was Very Funny
Frodo Jr. has an oliphaunt plushie that he carries around like a security blanket
He’s had it since he was a baby, when Rosie sewed the thing herself based on Sam’s descriptions
It’s been patched so many times it’s barely recognizable, but it’s still his “olly-fant”
He’s very nearly as obsessed with oliphaunts as his dad is
There is an entire wall in the front hallway that is used for tracking the kids’ heights
It was originally just a doorway, but then there started to be too many kids, and the notches in the doorframe got muddled and it was hard to tell whose mark was whose and now it is a wall
Sam’s sisters basically adopted Rosie as one of their own and get along like a house on fire
It’s a rare day that one of them doesn’t come over for tea and a bit of gossip and brings the cousins along for a play-date
Bag End is constantly full of the happy screams of hobbit children
Frodo has leaned to either deal with this or kick them all outside when he needs to concentrate
Frodo and Rosie were initially pretty awkward around one another
Frodo didn’t want to intrude on Sam’s new marriage, and Rosie didn’t know exactly how to address her husband’s tortured, melancholy soul-friend who happens to be a member of the gentry
But then Rosie managed to help calm Frodo down from one of his panic attacks (which Sam calls “fits”) while Sam was unavailable, which immediately broke the ice and cemented their friendship
Rosie has learned that whenever either one of her boys (read: Frodo and Sam) is being stubborn and unreasonable, the best course of action is to get the other one of her boys and have him come whip his best friend into shape
Frodo will give a long, calm, in-depth lecture about why Rosie is right and you really ought to listen closer to your wife, Samwise; Sam will just make sad eyes at Frodo until he agrees to eat or bathe or sleep or whatever he’s neglecting to do this time
The fact that the boys know she’s pitting them against each other doesn’t make it any less effective
Especially if she’s with child again; never has Frodo folded quicker and agreed to eat something sooner than when he’s getting sad puppy eyes from Sam and a very pregnant Rosie at the same time
Frodo sees Rosie as an extension of the life-debt he has to Sam and considers it his duty to ensure her safety and well-being, and this causes him to get very protective over her sometimes
Sam knows that Rosie can hold her own if someone says something untoward about her (likelier than not some gossip about her living with two male hobbits), but Frodo hasn’t yet got it into his head that Rosie can defend herself just fine and he will GO OFF if anyone so much as looks at her wrong
He also frets over her when she’s pregnant even more than Sam does
Again, this is not for lack of Sam’s attention, but because Frodo is an anxious worry-wort
Rosie sees Frodo as something between “distant older brother” or “weird uncle”
She thinks he’s very strange and eccentric, and—like having a funky-looking cat—that just makes her more fond of him
She’s heard enough of Sam and Frodo’s journey to piece together what happened, and because of it she is both in awe of Frodo and deeply saddened by the sacrifices he had to make; she considers it her own little service to Middle Earth to help make life comfortable and joyful and good for the two hobbits who saved her world
Because of his trauma, Frodo is prone to what Sam calls “fits” (aka panic attacks) and “moods” (aka depressive slumps), and Rosie has learned how to deal with both, and she teaches the older children how to help as soon as they’re old enough to understand
Elanor is her greatest helper; Frodo always seems to be able to muster a little smile for her, no matter how bad he’s feeling, even if he has to fake it
When Frodo is not in one of his “moods” (which tend to be worse around September through March), he is constantly working on recording his history of the War of the Ring and translating Elvish texts and corresponding back and forth with Aragorn in long letters to Gondor and secretly trying to write poems and songs to express his gratitude to Sam; he’s got reams and reams of the lattermost category, but never feels like he can get it quite right
But he’ll share his work with Sam if he’s at least 75% happy with it, and it always makes Sam cry
Journeyman is one of the first of those songs, and it was Sam’s favorite
Sam used to sing it to his kids at bedtime, and Frodo would hear his voice from the hall and get a little misty-eyed
Frodo’s favorite phrase, when he runs out of ways to say “thank you” to Sam, is “Rosie dear, come kiss your husband for me” because then he can just sit back and chuckle into his tea while Sam flushes up red like a tomato
Sometimes Legolas and Gimli drop in for a visit and all madness breaks loose
More infrequently, sometimes Aragorn comes to visit and quickly becomes a living jungle-gym for all the little Gamgees
But their favorite guest, of course, is Gandalf, who always shows up unexpected with sweets to distract all the little Hobbits from swarming him and hiding under his robes and wearing his hat
Frodo never marries and remains single as a pringle, and as happy as his health will allow, for the rest of his natural life

Gimli is underrated so much in fics, i love him so much. Sfw hcs about him dating a boyfriend who always takes care of his wounds and their basically a male-wife
I love Gimli, weird little goblin man
CW; LOTR canon injuries and death, slight angst
WC; 401
"House" Husband
Tumblr media
SFW
⚣ After everything you had always stayed by Gimli's side, you honored to take care of him, you became the companies pseudo "mother" during your travels.
⚣ When the company first banded together, that fateful day under Elronds ever so strong keep, you had sworn to take care of and watch Frodo and the other Hobbits with all your might.
⚣ Gimli loved watching you interact with the young Hobbits, corraling and caring for them, even when you knew they didn't need it. You tended to their wounds, you took care of their food. All of it.
⚣ When Merry and Pippin had been split up from you, after Frodo and Sam went on their way. You were so distraught, even more so when you thought the two young boys had been killed.
⚣ You were almost inconsolable, sobbing. It was like losing children, you lost your boys. You loved them as if they were your own children, and in a way they were.
⚣ You were an absolute mess the rest of the fight, you were fighting for your lover and the four boys you thought you had lost along the way. Your heart hurt in it's entirety, you missed them.
⚣ When the war was finally said and done you held your boys so tight, crying and sobbing while they cried along with you. You had experienced so much, you had to watch Frodo deteriorate, Sam fall apart to help him, you thought Merry and Pippin died, and even more so. You thought you lost Aragorn and your loving dwarf lover.
⚣ You took a long time to recover, but when you did, you and Gimli lived such a long and wonderful life, you and him even went to Sam and Rosie's wedding. You and Gimli were the honorary grandparents to their seven kids.
⚣ You and Gimli of course had children of your own, and he swore he'd never leave them behind in the same way his father had him, even if it was necessary. He didn't want his children to wonder where their father had gone.
⚣ When you and Gimli had finally gotten married, it was such a joyous day. Your 'children' and your actual children all around, with your close friends. Aragorn and Arwen there with, and of course you wished Frodo and Gandalf could be there, but after everything. You knew Frodo needed the rest.

2021 fanfic roundup
(this year’s been absolutely rubbish but I got a lot of writing done and made some lovely new fandom friends in the process, so here’s a review of all the fic I did during 2021! tagging anyone who wants to to do the same)
Give Me A Call Sometime (Ted Lasso) Will does the fashionable thing and matches up with a colleague on Bantr. Colin does the unexpected thing and finds himself being the responsible one. (minor Will/Colin)
Misadventures on Bantr (Ted Lasso) One dating app dependent on anonymity. Twenty-two footballers with no sense of boundaries. There's no way this can go badly, right? (multi-chap; Isaac/Colin, Sam/Dani, Dani/Colin, Thierry/Richard, Jan/Jamie, Jamie/Isaac, Jan/Moe, among others.)
Home for Christmas (Ted Lasso) Isaac is determined to give Colin the best Christmas he can. (Isaac/Colin)
Can't Take Them Anywhere (Ted Lasso) The Greyhounds' Hotel Furniture Shenanigans (and the Ongoing Quest Of One Nathan Shelley To Return Said Furniture To Whence It Came).
Colin Hughes’ Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Existential Crisis (Ted Lasso) Going through one sexual awakening to realise you’re gay is stressful enough. A second one to realise you’re actually bi is just downright unfair. (Or: the universe is screwing with Colin Hughes for giggles. Colin does not appreciate the universe’s efforts.) (Colin/OFC)
This Slanted Light (Lord of the Rings) During the Scouring of the Shire, the four Travellers battle their own traumas as they save their homeland. Frodo endeavours to help Sam live his own life; Merry grapples with the choices he made before the War; and Pippin balances honour against matters of the heart. (multi-chap: Sam/Rosie, Merry/Estella, Pippin/Diamond, Sam/Rosie/Frodo)
You're not a Demon (there's a reason you're behaving that way) (Ted Lasso) At a charity football match Colin and Nate finally have a chance to clear the air. OR: What happens when two people have wildly differing perspectives of the same event.
Unconditional (Ted Lasso) After his move to West Ham, Nate is prepared for everyone at Richmond to hate him. Unfortunately for him, the Richmond team have nothing but love for their beloved coach, which is an experience Nate is woefully underprepared for...
A is for Ally (Ted Lasso) When Richard suggests a novel way for the Richmond boys to show their allyship, Colin ends up coming out to the team...just not in the way they were expecting. (In which Isaac is overprotective, Jamie suspects Colin might actually be a Jedi knight, and Bumbercatch reveals way more about his sexual preferences than anyone was expecting.)
Tough Truths (Ted Lasso) On the eve of the most important match in Richmond's history, a newly returned Nate tells Jamie precisely what he needs to hear.
On Purpose (Ted Lasso) More than anyone else, Rebecca knows the dangers of getting too close to Rupert Mannion. Being Rebecca, she expresses her concerns to Nate in her own unique fashion.
Lost in Translation (Ted Lasso) Dani has a little multilingual fun with Colin. Colin is in hell. (Colin/Dani) Only The Welsh Can Cwtch (Ted Lasso) Eight times when Colin gave his teammates the physical affection they needed, and one time when they returned the favour. (minor Colin/everyone)
One Is A Lonely Number (Ted Lasso) Driven by necessity, Jamie delivers a long overdue apology to Nate. It goes about as well as you'd expect.
Doing Better (Ted Lasso) After Nate's apology, Colin thinks about fathers, mistakes, and having people come through for you. (Also about Nate. He's a bit worried about Nate, actually.)
Three is Company (Lord of the Rings) Sometimes relationships need a little communication. In which Rosie is bolder than the boys expect, Frodo is overcome with emotion (and a severe case of the giggles), Sam still doesn't understand what a catch he is - and all three hobbits love each other very dearly indeed. (Rosie/Sam/Frodo)
An Unexpected Courtship (Lord of the Rings) After a chance meeting at a party, Pippin is delighted to pretend to be courting the lovely Diamond North-Took to help her avoid an unwanted suitor. Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding, her unwanted suitor is…Pippin Took. This could get complicated... (multi-chap; Pippin/Diamond)
Sabotage (Lord of the Rings) A series of post-wedding day pranks begins a new tradition between Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin. (Sam/Rosie, Merry/Estella, Pippin/Diamond, minor Sam/Rosie/Frodo)
Heed No Nightly Noises (Lord of the Rings) After the Quest, the Travellers aren’t the only ones who need looking after. Sam and Frodo comfort Rosie in the aftermath of a nightmare. (platonic Sam/Rosie/Frodo) Mark of a Warrior (Lord of the Rings) After the funeral for Theoden, Merry wakes up to a problem experienced by many a young man after a night of heavy drinking. The ink on his arm doesn't appear to be washing off… Irises in Summer (Lord of the Rings) Sometimes the only choices left to you are bad ones. An old hobbit reflects on what Merry lost in the course of the Conspiracy. (Merry/Estella)
Let's Talk About Love (Lord of the Rings) When talk of romance is in the air, the demisexual Sam and Legolas share their own experiences of love and desire - and exchange a little much-needed advice in the process. (Written for Aspec Arda Week 2021; Sam/Rosie, Gimli/Legolas)
apodyosis (The Musketeers) At the funeral mass of Alice’s husband, Porthos and Alice take the measure of each other in every possible way. (Porthos/Alice) A Passing Shadow (Lord of the Rings) At the funeral wake of Denethor, Gandalf tries to help Pippin make sense of the Lord Steward's actions - and maybe let go of the past in the process. Capernoited (The Musketeers) D'Artagnan celebrates his appointment to the king's Musketeers in an unorthodox fashion.
Home Fires Burning (Lord of the Rings) The War of the Ring rages on. In the Shire, and under foreign occupation, the hobbits learn to live without those they love.
Too Much Information (Lord of the Rings) The Fellowship share about the sex lives of the various races. (Rather too much, in fact). In which Gandalf is cagey, Merry and Pippin are shameless, and Boromir finds out more about the Fellowship's personal lives than he wanted to know. A Shadow And A Thought (Lord of the Rings) AU: Boromir lives, and the Lady of the White Tower falls in love with a different man to come to Edoras. (Boromir/Eowyn, Faramir/Eowyn, minor Legolas/Gimli.)

And how about 42 for Sam and Frodo, post quest (perhaps with a bit of Rosie thrown in there?)?
okay this is very different than what i was intending it to be, however, i hope you like it!
It was nearing the anniversary of the destruction of the Ring. You wouldn’t have been able to tell by the actions of anyone in the Shire except for those four brave hobbits who had left so long ago, and had never truly come back. That was something that had been different in each and every one of them, however, none were so obvious as Frodo. His new permanent stay with Samwise Gamgee was discussed in the Shire for the first few months, eventually fading into the background with the new birth or wedding that people had begun to talk about next.
Despite any rumors otherwise, the two had lived in harmony, even when the days seemed to grow harder and harder to bear. The lack of knowledge regarding certain dates left them mourning for near a fortnight for the first and only of their lost companions while the certainty of the date of the Ring left them avoiding the subject for far longer than expected. During these times, Merry and Pippin’s occasional visits became more frequent, basically everyday for hours on end as they rehashed bits and pieces of the quest that they could never truly forget. There was always an urge to disregard any memories of Boromir that came up, but it was always easier to share the joy that the Gondorian had brought rather than throw it away.
During one of the days leading up to The Date, Frodo’s shoulder began to ache as it always did. Shelob’s venom had never quite left him after all, and the anniversary of the spider’s death always seemed to be as painful as the very first jab. It was almost its way of getting both him and Sam back for its death. It certainly felt like it with the near constant pain not allowing Frodo to do much of anything and Sam being forced to take care of the other hobbit.
On one of his ventures for supplies, for with the gossip mills always turning about the former members of the Fellowship and their actions, they were certainly ventures, Sam spotted the most peculiar of items. Upon asking the hobbit running the stall, he was given an answer and struck with the sudden realization of what they could possibly be used for. After buying it and what remained of the items they would require for the next week, he rushed home, although only after he was out of sight of the hobbits in the marketplace. There was no need to try and provoke their gossip today. He had things that he needed to do.
He barely managed to not run over any faunts playing along the walkways and avoid the other hobbits who stared after him as he made his way to Bag End. Somehow not banging the door, Sam quickly began to drop off his purchases in their proper locations before holding his interesting purchase. The “fairy lights” as the vendor had called them were certainly going to be interesting to set up in the space by the fireplace. As long as the strand was, it didn’t seem like enough to fully illuminate the area. But somehow Sam would make it work. Because he had to. For Frodo.
After a creative rearrangement of furniture that left only two armchairs out of the formation and extensive use of a stool meant for faunts, it was done. All of the lights were strewn across the room, making a second sky to match the one about to form outside. It made the area into a comfortable little alcove for the two hobbits, perfectly lit for them to be able to read a book without the need of the fireplace. Although that would still be on. The cold of Shire nights never suited either of them after Mordor. The days of running around late at night would never happen again, for the chill seemed to eat into their bones during summer nights that had used to be too warm to tolerate even the thinnest sheet.
But now with all the preparations taken care of, perhaps it would suit the two of them well enough. With the promise of a surprise, Sam managed to coax out Frodo from his bedroom where he had been trying to reduce his own pain for the past two days. The elven remedies that Lord Elrond suggested were never enough to truly remove the sting, but deadened it enough that Frodo was able to move around when necessary and that would have to suffice for tonight.
After managing to drag the weary hobbit out of his room, there was a moment of complete silence as Frodo stared at everything Sam had set up. Sam’s heart was both stopped and pounding in his chest as he awaited the hobbit’s reaction. “Sam.” And the silence was broken. The sound came rushing back until Frodo continued, “You didn’t have to.”
“I didn’t. But I wanted to.”
“Why? I don’t,” He swallowed before saying, “I don’t deserve this.”
“Of course you do Mister Frodo.” He replied quickly, slipping back into old habits despite the years it had been since he had used his title. “That’s why I put up fairy lights, just to distract you.”
Frodo opened his mouth before closing it again. Finally, he forced himself to say, “I suppose for one night I can be distracted.”

Dude your fandom list is just like mine!! I'm so excited to see that, so I just had to send in a request!!
If you're fine with multiple fandoms in one ask, how would Aragorn, Samwise gamgee, Zelda (botw) and Mipha react to a s/o who's career is working with hospitalized kids? I'm hoping to start a career in using video games and pop culture as therapy for kids in hospitals and domestic violence shelters, like playing games with them or talking about their favorite cartoons to get their mind off of their pain and troubles. It's a sorta sad line of work, but I love making people happy and sharing my passions with those who might need it.
Sorry if that's too heavy a subject, I really do love seeing new blogs around! Thanks so much in advance hun, I hope you're doing well
Ah thank you for being my first ask!! I decided to split this into 2 parts, LOTR and BOTW being separate.
Aragorn With A Child Care S/O
You met Aragorn when he visited Endoras, where you were caring for a haggle of children while the parents worked.
The children were immediately attracted to him, begging him for stories and to teach them how to swordfight. Meanwhile, he was attracted to you, the way you cared for every child fairly, treating them as your own.
It didn’t take long for you to fall for him either, although he was slow to return the feelings, he knew his odds of surviving the war was low and didn’t want you to get hurt.
You told him it would hurt you more if you were never able to act on your feelings towards him, and eventually he agreed.
When the war started, you left with him to Gondor, and when you finally reached the city, you decided to set up a permanent childrens hospital, as the war had left so many injured.
It took until after he was crowned for Aragorn to discover your hospital, and he was amazed at the amount of effort and money you’d put into the shelter.
Soon you started receiving anonymous donations of money, books, and toys.
Aragorn would feel frustrated that he didn’t know about your hospital sooner. He was King, but more than that, he was your partner. Had the war really caused his ignorance?
One day, he would just bite the bullet and come to see you, apologizing for not being more attentive to what you do during the day. He would ask you to let him sponsor the hospital, so that it could get proper funding.
Soon, it became part of his duties to visit the children at your hospital, telling them stories like he did in Endoras.
With his help, you were able to purchase new equipment and research medicines for the children. And then you opened other hospitals in other cities and towns of man, starting with Endoras.
Samwise Gamgee With A Child Care S/O
You had been dating Sam for a while before he disappeared with Frodo, Merry, and Pippin.
It took you a week of waiting before you decided to pack your bags and find them.
You made it to Bree, and as you were walking past an alleyway, you heard a sniffle. The sound made you stop in your tracks.
Sitting outside of a half-wrecked door was a little human boy, no older than five. He had nasty bruises on his arms, and your heart sank. You had always had a soft spot for children, and you knew you had to save this one.
As you picked up the boy, you saw a tiny bundle of blankets beside him, and a tiny hand reached at you as you bent over to investigate.
Taking the baby in your arms and the boy's hand in your own, you went back to the Shire. As you searched for your house key, you felt the key for Bilbo Baggin’s home in your pocket, which you had due to you cleaning his house for him.
You had access to the biggest hole in the Shire, which currently lay un-inhabited. You brought the children up the hill, opening the green door and tucking the boy in a guest room, and tucking the baby in a basket.
You sat down at the desk to work, surely more children needed help, how could you abandon them.
You wrote lists for groceries, wrote flyers, and worked well into the night. You knew Rosie Cotton, one of your closest friends, would help, you weren’t sure of the other Hobbits though. So you wrote letters. So. Many. Letters.
The next morning, you met the boy properly, learning his name was Buckley, and the baby was his sister, Natalia. Their mother had died, and their father had forgotten about them. You set them up with some food and water, Buckley knowing how to take care of his sister already.
You went all over Hobbiton. The market for more food, the crossing to deliver fliers to Bree and beyond, delivered your letters, and talked to Rosie, who agreed to help when she wasn’t working at the tavern.
When you got home, Buckley was playing with a little cloth doll above Natalia's head, and he tried to help you as much as he could.
Months passed, your shelter growing from Buckley and Natalia to twenty children piled into the hobbit hole. Needless to say, it was completely changed. Some of the other Hobbits had donated clothing, and a few had even gotten human clothes for the bigger kids.
The day Sam and Frodo came back, you were teaching a few of the children the names of the flowers in the garden. You had installed a little bell on the gate and the door, so you could hear new arrivals.
Without really looking, you welcomed them to the shelter, before standing up and seeing them. It took a moment for you to realise who they were, but Sam was already walking toward you with open arms.
A running jump later, and you were both on the ground, laughing and celebrating.
Two seconds later you started scolding him, and despite his best efforts, you still managed to chew him out think Molly Weasleys howler, but in person
Frodo would gift you and Sam his house to keep the shelter running, and Sam would dote on the kids constantly, teaching them how to garden, cook, and telling them all about the “Brave Adventures of Mr. Frodo”
You would both pass on the shelter and retire after Frodo left for the Grey Havens, moving into your old hobbit hole.

I came to think about this less than ideal blur between fandom and academia because I ran across a discussion about whether or not Sam and Frodo was in a gay relationship. And it wasn’t a fandom ship discussion. People were arguing whether or not the actual LOTR text could be interpreted that way in an academic paper.
The main argument was of course, that yes, Sam and Frodo were in gay relationship. There were dissenters who argued that no Sam is not gay because he clearly ends up in a heterosexual marriage with Rosie Cotton and they have big family together. Then the author (pro Sam/Frodo) commented that still, Sam could be bisexual (because Tolkien never wrote that he wasn’t!). Some others commented that it was common for gay men to get married to women in the past. In short, people would not let go of the idea that Sam and Frodo could be gay in canon. When the dissent persisted, the pro-Sam/Frodo crowd pulled out “what’s the harm” card.
This would not have been a problem at all if the exchange took place in let’s say, Tumblr. If someone wants to ship Sam and Frodo, they should be able to without being harassed by the crowd crying “it’s not the canon.” In many fandoms, I see a lot of needless hate against ships or anything deemed “for female fans” and this is whole another topic to talk about. But if one’s arguing whether or not one could read something certain way in an academic context, (”Is this reading of this text reasonable/able to withstand scrutiny?”) then the person is opening the question up for debate.
Personally, as a (former) academic, I believe that Sam cannot be interpreted as gay from the LOTR text. Again, this does not mean that people shouldn’t be able to enjoy such fan headcanon/ships. Let me quickly lay out the arguments. 1. Sam and Frodo’s relationship was largely inspired by Tolkien’s own experience during WWI and shows positive, deep male friendship. 2. Sam’s infatuation with Rosie Cotton is described very well in the text and an absence of an author’s word on certain topic (”is Sam bisexual?”) does not work as a proof for anything. 3. Tolkien has no history of writing homosexual or bisexual relationships nor has he shown any explicit stance on the topic.
1. Sam and Frodo’s relationship was largely inspired by Tolkien’s own experience during WWI. This is discussed often and extensively in studies of his work. Nor is such close male relationship anything too strange. Portrayals of two males sharing deep friendship were pretty common throughout literary history both in the west and the east. Some people like to argue rather flippantly “see, everyone was gay!” at seeing relationships such as the bond between David and Jonathan. I think the case is more about how the current society, especially American society, grew to pathologize male feelings and intimacy.
2. The LOTR makes Sam’s infatuation with Rosie (and also her affection for him) very, very obvious. Rosie doesn’t pop up right at the end of the book so Sam can be married off.
3. Tolkien has no history of writing homosexual/bisexual relationships. A lot of people like going on about “Tolkien was a catholic!” and it’s an often misused argument usually employed to shut down any interpretation (academic or just fan) that the person does not like. Regardless of Tolkien’s religion, one clear thing is that writing gay relationship was not his priority.
Take Oscar Wilde, for a change. There are many male characters in close relationship to one another in his works. The exchange between Dorian Gray and Basil the painter is intimate, and considering that the author himself was gay and dated a younger man, one could reasonably argue that there is some homoerotic tension between the two men.
Tolkien on the other hand, has no personal connection or history of writing such relationship (Also on the personal note, try comparing how Wilde writes two men and how Tolkien writes two men. Oh boy, you’ll see the difference).
This is not saying that you have to be gay to write gay relationships but rather considering the context in which he was writing LOTR, it’s very less likely that he meant Sam and Frodo’s relationship to be gay love.
(2/2)
Again, I clarify that whatever my words are, it’s not a justification to be a dick and harass other people with “Hurr durr it’s not canon though.” In fan spaces, let other fans be fans.
And omake coming soon when I finish this other work.
Oh and yes, I think Sam and Frodo are cute though I don’t ship them as couple.

What your favorite Lord of the Rings ship says about you
(in the style of Eldena Doubleca5t)
Sam x Frodo: You're a firm believer in keeping things at least semi-canon, and keeping things wholesome.
Aragorn x Arwen: This is the same joke as Sam x Frodo, but with explicit canon validation and heterosexuality.
Merry x Pippin: You're a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of stoner buddy comedies.
Eowyn x Aragorn: You think Arwen is overrated
Eowyn x Faramir: You think Aragorn is overrated.
Beren x Luthien: You're a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of worldbuilding.
Gandalf x Galadriel: Your ideal date involves being melancholy together.
Gimli x Legolas: Your ideal date involves your partner breaking you into heaven.
Gimli x Galadriel: You love milfs.
Legolas x Aragorn: Your crippling addiction to beefcakes got so bad that one day you were like you know what's better than one beefcake? Two beefcakes.
Sam x Rosie Cotton: You are heterosexual.

Review:
I got a lovely comment from PanicMood once that said, “You know, in Rome, there is a say that goes something like: "what the barbarians didn't do, the Barberini did". It refers to the usage that the rich families around 1600 did of materials from ancient Roman buildings to ornate their new churches and palaces. But some of those are amazing, beautiful works of arts, and I' m so glad that from the rubble of S4 there is enough material to build new fantastic stories.”
I think of that a lot when I read S4 fix-it fics. S4 upset a lot of fans, and for a time I was deeply concerned that the fandom, and particularly writers, would fall away. Fortunately, they didn’t. There was a changing of the guard, certainly, and some people did need to walk away, but there were also some new fans, and there were some writers that wrote with renewed energy and verve.
This was one of the first post-S4 fics I read that addressed the issues the show had raised head-on. And it does exactly what PanicMood said – took all the difficult, painful moments, and rebuilt them carefully into something beautiful. The author has portrayed Sherlock’s inner voice so well, in a way that reminded me of (but does not imitate) the classic fic, The Progress of Sherlock Holmes. John and Sherlock draw together in a way that is respectful of the pain in the past and informs the reader that these two are going to be just fine now. In fact, they’re going to be better.
Also I love Rosie in this fic.
The words that took my breath away:
Wiggins was gone, Sherlock was sober, and John was in the kitchen.
Mad. Charming. Likeable. Unsafe.
“POW!”
“It shouldn’t be the same. It would be wrong if it were.”

Dating Frodo headcanons? :)
Here you go! Hope you like it.
Dating Frodo Baggins Would Include:
Tumblr media
You relationship developed slowly, both of you being too shy to start it.
Frodo finally asked you if you were interested in him, with a bright red face and a bouquet of flowers that Sam helped him pick out.
You then started dating (Or courting, Not sure what Hobbits do) Frodo.
Your dates mostly consisted of peaceful walks through the lands of the shire or relaxing reading a books together cuddled up together
Sam was somewhat of a third wheel until Rosie and him got together, Not that you or Frodo minded. I mean he was an amazing cook after all and a great friend.
Now Sam and Rosie and, Frodo and you can all go on double dates of sorts.
Bilbo loved you like a daughter and strongly supported your relationship with Frodo.
Frodo is very soft and gentle with his affections to you.  Your kisses together are soft and almost innocent, with pure love being poured into them.
And don't even get me started on how good of a cuddler Frodo is. His favorite thing is to have you in his arms as he reads a book and runs his fingers through your hair.

This year in Middle-earth, (30)20 (done 10 minutes before this year was over)
3020: Year of Plenty (not a good alignment to our ‘20), harvests & plant growth in the Shire were abundant, every hobbit-child born that year had golden hair, there was also like good weather or something, “and everybody was happy, except those who had to mow the grass” (that’s why I love Tolkien, right there, that that line can coexist along noble Aragorn fighting an epic battle).
5/1/(30)20: Sam Gamgee marries Rosie Cotton and they move into Bag End with Frodo. And so the real hero gets his reward.
3/13/20 (wasn’t this the date lockdowns started??) & 10/6/20: Frodo is ill as the spider bite and Nazgul wounds (respectively) he received pain him.
Hopefully at some point: they tell Freddy Bolger everything that happened and they all clue in Folco Boffin who was their other good friend but left out (including of the family trees) for no good reason!!!

If you love something, set it free
All @urfavpendeja ‘s fault, so no Drarry this time but gay hobbits.
Also on Ao3
Frodo watched Sam dance with Rosie. They made a beautiful couple, everyone said so. Sam looked stout as always, blond curls falling in his face as he twirled her around and laughed, loud and free. It wasn’t unusual to hear him laugh like that anymore, but Frodo still remembered the days when not even Sam could laugh. Thoughts like that always made him shudder, violently throwing him back into the blank, all-consuming darkness, made his shoulder wound ache and fill his heart with longing for something long destroyed. He searches, increasingly frantically, for the ring that should be on the chain around his neck but isn’t, that is gone, heart beating faster and faster, when Sam’s laugh startles him out of his panic.
He is back again, back in the Shire, surrounded by music and dance, back with Sam, dancing and laughing and living and being happy. And suddenly, it’s all too much. The music too loud, the hobbits too many, the air too warm. Frodo needed to get away, needed to breathe, needed Sam. But Sam is with Rosie, finally unburdened and living his own life. Frodo can’t take that from him, he won’t take it away.
He abruptly stood up, toppling over his drink and upsetting several hobbits, pushing down the rows before finally breaking free. The evening air was cold around him, chilling and clearing his head. He quickly started to walk, intending to put some distance between himself and the raucous activity of the feast. There was no need to ruin everyone else’s mood on such a splendid occasion.
His feet automatically took him up the little hill to the spot where he would sit with Sam, smoking and enjoying the company. It feels wrong without Sam, lonely and cold. Frodo stays anyway.
From up here, he could see down to the dance floor where Sam was still dancing, oblivious to his inner turmoil. Frodo told himself that he’s glad about that, that he’s happy for Sam. But he couldn’t deny he wished Sam were up here with him instead of down there with her. Frodo never thought it possible to miss someone who wasn’t actually gone this much. But for all that Sam was there physically, he was miles away emotionally. He would never love Frodo the way he loved him, and it was about time he accepted that. Sam would be with Rosie; they would marry and start a family and his friend would finally be happy.
It worried Frodo if he was being honest. He didn’t like thinking like that, but sometimes he couldn’t help it. He vividly imagined Sam, at his wedding day, with his children, growing old and fat, telling stories to anyone who would listen. It’s a glorious future, one Sam always wanted and deserved, one Frodo doesn’t exist in. Sam would focus all his time and efforts on Rosie, on the things and people that bring him joy. Frodo had brought him enough misery to last a lifetime by dragging him on that dreadful journey into the heart of pure evil.
Sam would be better off without him. He might be staying with Frodo for the moment, but he could feel that things were different now. Sam was lost in thought, thinking about Rosie no doubt, smiling at nothing and being happy. It wasn’t fair for Frodo to keep Sam from pursuing his heart, it’s a selfish and desperate thing to do, clinging to the last shreds of loyalty Sam felt toward him. He knew Sam would never leave him, would feel obligated to stay even if he’d much rather spend his time with someone else. But Frodo knows he, himself, would take it, greedy for anything he could get, consuming Sam’s time and keeping it all for himself, as if he hadn’t stolen enough of it yet.
And that is why he has to send him away. He has been selfish long enough, and now Sam should be allowed to live his life, follow his dreams and build a future. He deserved it, and Frodo was keeping him back. Sam may not see it that way, will definitely protest, but Frodo knew it. And because Sam, sweet loyal Sam, would never leave on his own, Frodo had to make this choice for him. He would be upset at first, but it’d better for him in the long run. Frodo had to believe that, had to cling to the image of Sam finally being happy.
He would send him away. Next thing tomorrow, he would finally set him free. Men had a saying, “If you love something, set it free.” Frodo loved Sam, with his whole being and since the beginning of time, so he would set him free.
He couldn’t be here to watch it, though, couldn’t silently observe Sam’s life unfold and bloom, couldn’t hear his laugh only from afar or stare at his vacant garden every day wishing Sam were there. No, he would have to leave. He would have to go far away, and never come back. Surely, it would get easier with time, the pain and heartache would dull over the years. He knew he would never forget Sam, would never stop loving him, but maybe someday, he would learn to live with only half his heart.
Gandalf’s words came back to him now. How he should accompany him to Valinor, to the Undying Lands, with Bilbo and the last of the elves. It would be an honour, he said, that it would be fitting for him as ring-bearer. He hadn’t thought he would accept, would leave the world he fought so hard for behind. But without Sam, there was nothing holding him here.
He wished Sam would get his happy ending with his whole heart, but Frodo simply couldn’t stand by and watch it with a smile on his face. It had been hard enough to be supportive so far, and he couldn’t do it for a lifetime. Sam would live his life, would be happy. And for him to be happy, he needed Frodo to smile. He couldn’t do that anymore, so Frodo would leave with Gandalf and Bilbo for Valinor. It was basic, logical reasoning, flawless except for the pain it would cause.
He didn’t remember the exact date, but the last ship would leave soon. He should tell Sam now; he owed him an explanation that wasn’t rushed and at the last possible moment. But not telling him now meant Frodo would get a few more days to stay close to him, to make him laugh and pretend they could stay like this forever. It also meant a few more days of forced smiles, though well worth it in the end.
But here, engulfed by the darkness around him, no one could see his tears, so he let them fall freely. Frodo cried for the tomorrows that would never come, for the hurt expression Sam would surely have when he has to send him away, for the life of pronounced absence that waited for him.
This is how Sam found him, alone on their hill, head buried in his hands and sobs wrecking his body. Frodo noticed him too late, or he would have tried to stop the tears, put on a smile, and pretend. But he only noticed when Sam’s arms were around him, holding him tightly and pressing his face into his neck. Frodo wanted to protest, wanted to wipe away his tears and completely ignore his feelings, but Sam was so soft and smelled like heaven, safe and familiar. Before he consciously decided to, he relaxed into the hold and sobbed, wetting Sam’s clothes with his tears. Sam only made soothing noises, gently rubbing a hand down his back or petting his hair.
“Now, Mr. Frodo, what could possibly be wrong on a wonderful evening such as this? Who do I need to beat up?” Sam spoke gently, carefully, not wanting to upset Frodo again, but with such fierceness that he didn’t doubt for a second that he would do it. Even if he would much rather stay with Frodo, make sure he’s alright.
“Oh, Sam, my good Sam, there is nothing wrong, I promise. Just stay like that for a little longer, that is more than enough.” He knew he should get up, should distance himself and not make this harder than it already was. And he would, he would, if not for the pleasant rumble in Sam’s chest or the hand still playing with his hair. Frodo never wanted to move again, and at that moment, he didn’t have to. So, he snuggled closer.
“Keep talking, please?” It came out small, meek and unsure, but Sam just pressed a kiss on his head and started talking. Frodo couldn’t see him, as that would’ve required him to move his head, so he let Sam’s voice wash over him, raising and falling in waves, telling the tales of the stars.
“I will miss this the most, I think.” Frodo didn’t realise he had spoken until he felt Sam go still under him. It was only meant for himself, a quiet acknowledgment to what he was about to give up. But now Sam had heard, and it would be folly to believe Frodo could tell him anything but the truth. He could never lie to Sam.
“Miss it, Mr. Frodo? There’s no need to miss anything, we can do this all the time.” But he didn’t continue his story; he waited for Frodo to explain himself.
“I didn’t want to tell you yet, but I suppose now is as good a time as any.” He didn’t move away from Sam, treasuring the warmth as long as he still could, hiding. He took a deep breath, preparing for what he needed to do.
If you love something, set it free.
“I finished Bilbo’s book, you know. Wrote down every detail of our great adventure, every single time you saved my life or brought me hope when I wanted to give up. I wouldn’t have made it without you, Sam. I need you to remember that, to remember me.
“I am leaving, Sam. We set out to save the Shire, and save it we did, but I don’t belong here anymore. I have nothing to return to, nothing holding me. The elves offered to take me to Valinor with Gandalf and Bilbo. I will go with them, soon, and I won’t return.
“I would love to stay for your wedding, to watch your children grow up and see you grow old Sam, I really would. I understand if you are angry now, but I would beg you, my dear Sam, not to be. I don’t want to spend our last days together fighting.”
Frodo didn’t dare look up, couldn’t bear to see the anger, or worse, the hurt in Sam’s eyes. It was bad enough to feel how still he was, his hand tangled in his hair but not moving anymore, the rumbling of his voice no longer there. Frodo didn’t move either, didn’t want to break fragile last moment before he would be confronted with the grief he caused. But he had to stay strong, for Sam.
“You are making fun, Mr. Frodo. But I don’t think it’s funny, no, not funny at all.” Sam sounded odd, void of the usual passion and warmth. He kept talking though, quickly gaining vigour.
“You are not making sense, talking of my wedding and yet you not being there, how is that possible, I ask you? I would look a right fool, all alone with you gone. But I would never be angry if you didn’t want that. I just beg you not to leave, to not even joke about such horrible things. For, while I may never forget you, I can’t even think of living my whole life with nothing but the memory of you. I don’t intend to ever let you go.” Sam held him closer now, pressed their bodies together, and all but whispered the last part, soft and fierce. It broke Frodo’s heart all over again.
“Oh, Sam, don’t you know how much I want that, how I wish to never be parted from you? But even more than that, I want you to be happy! You have been loyal to me long enough, suffered more for me than I ever could have asked, I will not take your future from you as well. I won’t keep you from marrying Rosie just so you can stay with me, and yet you are far too stubborn for your own good, so I will leave. You are not failing me by following your heart Sam, not even if it leads you away from me.” Frodo was crying again, clinging to Sam against his every intention. Soon now, he would be gone forever. Who could blame him for savouring this last contact?
Suddenly, Sam was moving, gently cupping his face and tilting it up, and their eyes finally met. Frodo found none of the hurt and anger he had expected; instead, Sam smiled in that way of his he could never interpret, though he’d dedicated countless hours to analysing it. Again, he could just stare up at Sam in wide-eyed wonder.
“You had me scared for a second there, more scared than the combined forces of evil. But how could you not know? I always thought you knew and were doing me a kindness by not mentioning it. I love you, Frodo. With my whole heart and soul do I love you, and I will marry no one but you if you will have me.”
Frodo kept staring, brain desperately trying to process what he had just heard, though deep in his heart, he always knew. He broke out laughing, relieved and free, as happy as he hadn’t been in too long, and surged up, throwing his arms around Sam, toppling them both over with the sudden motion.
Neither of them minded. For a moment they were nothing more than two young and stupid hobbits again, fooling around without a care in the world. Frodo felt none of the usual nostalgia, though. Nothing could compare to this moment right here and now.
Laughter trailed off, and Frodo found himself lying under Sam, looking up at his smiling face. The crushing grief he felt just moments ago was forgotten, chased away by Sam’s earnest words and a happy smile. He looked lovely, face framed by the night sky, no star even half as beautiful as his eyes. His curls were a mess, thanks to their brief stumble, but they looked incredibly soft, and Frodo neither had the desire nor the ability to stop himself from reaching out. He twirled the locks around his finger, running his hand through Sam’s hair, brushing against his ears to see him shudder. Sam was fascinating, and Frodo intended to study his every reaction, every sound and movement. His eyes fell down to Sam’s lips, slightly parted and chapped, they shouldn’t be as alluring as they were. But then, Sam always had held a certain charm, something that made him irresistible to Frodo.
What wanted to make Frodo listen to him when he lectured him about eating or paying attention when he was raving on about his plants, now made him long for a kiss.
Sam was practically purring, eyes closed, and head softly pressed up against Frodo’s hands whenever he deemed the pressure was too low or the pause was too long. He would have been content doing this, dedicating his life to keeping the expression of bliss on Sam’s face, and it would have been a good life. But then his mouth captured Frodo’s attention, casting the charm and shifting his focus.
Frodo gently pulled Sam down, closer to him, until their lips could almost touch and they breathed the same air. This close he could count Sam’s freckles, even in the darkness. He had always loved them, wanted to memorise every single one of them, wanted to connect and trace them. Slowly Frodo slid one hand from his hair, rested it against his face, and thumbed over the freckles on his cheekbones. Sam’s eyes stayed open this time, watching as Frodo cupped his face with both his hands.
He could hardly remember how he ever thought he could let Sam go. “If you love it, set it free” that’s what they say. Suddenly he remembers, the saying doesn’t end there.
If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it’s yours.
Frodo preferred it this way. He smiled up at Sam, meeting his eyes, and found the same unspoken desires reflected in them.
“May I kiss you, my dear, lovely Sam?”
