Frodo and Sam are so embarrassing sometimes; their idea of flirting is to huddle together in the middle of a dark stairwell below a spider’s cave and pretend to quote random people in the future who will be saying complimentary things like “Frodo was very brave wasn’t he, the famousest of all hobbits” and “I want to hear more about Sam, why didn’t they put in more of his talk, that’s what I like, it makes me laugh.” Like come on sweeties, you can just simply say “Frodo you’re so brave” and “Sam you make me laugh”. You two are making this needlessly complicated. 🤭🤭🤭

i've recently gotten into lotr and have started reading the books as well, so i redownloaded twitter because i wanted to consume more fandom content. please tell me why isn't there an active queer community for lotr there? or was i not looking hard enough? i hate that most lotr enjoyers are shallow minded dudebros. i genuinely don't know what i would do without tumblr cause my lotr and samfro brainrot are so strong rn.

When Winter comes, the winter wild that hill and wood shall slay; When trees shall fall and starless night devour the sunless day; When wind is in the deadly East, then in the bitter rain I'll look for thee, and call to thee; I'll come to thee again!
Together we will take the road that leads into the West, And far away will find a land where both our hearts may rest.

Reading the Fellowship of the Rings for the first time as an adult and I thought Sam and Frodo being gay for each other was just a Tumblr thing but that shit is IN THE TEXT.
First of all when Frodo wakes up in Rivendell after his fight with the Nazgul the FIRST PERSON he asks for is Sam, who Gandalf reveals has been sitting up at Frodo's bedside night after night until the Wizard finally forces him to get some rest
and then when Sam shows up we get THIS line of dialouge:
"At that moment there was a knock at the door and Sam came in. He ran to Frodo and took his left hand, awkwardly and shyly. He stroked it gently and then he blushed and turned hastily away.
'Hullo, Sam!' Said Frodo.
'It's warm!' said Sam 'Meaning your hand, Mr. Frodo. It has felt so cold through the long nights."
!!! that is some AO3 dialogue if I've ever seen it
I'm probably very late to the party on this but I'm having a fun time

For the record, when the Ring isn’t in control, Frodo and Sam actually have an incredibly healthy relationship. Whether you ship them or just see them as friends, they really are goals in a lot of ways. The books show this way better than the movies, as despite their class difference, Frodo is so respectful toward Sam and never treats him like a servant, and unlike the stupid made-up scene in the movies, Frodo NEVER trusts Gollum over Sam or tells Sam to go home or doubts Sam’s loyalty for one moment. All of the dark and unpleasant moments between them are a direct result of the Ring’s effect on Frodo. Without the Ring, there is just pure mutual devotion and loyalty and kindness and tenderness between them - which, speaking as a shipper, is more than can be said about a good many popular ships.

[ID: Screenshot of a tumblr post from @doubledecks with a quote from an unknown source, which reads:
"While many people think fanfiction is about inserting sex into texts (like Tolkien's) where it doesn't belong, Brancher sees it differently: "I was desperate to read about sex that included great friendship; I was repurposing Tolkien's text in order to do that. It wasn't that friendship needed to be sexualized, it was that erotica needed to be ... friendship-ized." Many fanfiction writers write about sex in conjunction with beloved texts and characters not because they think those texts are incomplete, but because they're looking for stories where sex is profound and meaningful. This is part of what makes fan fiction different from pornography: unlike pornography, fanfic features characters we already care deeply about, and who tend to already have longstanding and complex relationships with each other. It's a genre of sexual subjectification: the very opposite of objectification. It's benefits with friendship." End ID]
does anybody know where this quote is from? i found it in my camera roll and i think its an absolutely brilliant way of looking at queer readings of sam/frodo as well as slash fiction in general. i think its from an essay or article or something and i want to read the whole thing. if anyone knows where its from pls lmk!
edit: it’s been found! it’s from “The Fanfiction Reader: Folk Tales for the Digital Age” by Francesca Coppa!

I doubt Tolkien meant for this to read as shippy, but I can see why people ship Sam/Frodo.
Do I ship it? I dunno. I'll have to see by the end. Right now, I'm halfway through Fellowship of the Ring, which is about 1/6 through the entire trilogy.
