What’s your timeline for the movies?
I’m trying to write something of my own but I can’t figure the timeline out
hooooooooooooooo boy yeah i had a whole mental breakdown over this lol, i made my own for my rewrite fic because canon makes no sense. so the only CONFIRMED timeline is the time between d1 and d2, six months 'six months ago i was stealing candy from babies-Mal during the 'talk scene' between the c4. D3 is implied to be about two weeks? so vk day-aka the start-one week later-vk pick up day, hades attacks, Audrey steals the scepter-the next day, Jnaes birthday, the meeting, the whole adventure, and then a week later is the engagement party/the end of the movie.
but blah blah blah-so my timeline was, starts in January, though it should at the very least start in October considering a side book that mentions the coronation/the maleficent incident happening on October 18th, BUT-with d2 being six months later, and another side book says cotillion happened June 24/5th, so the end of the school year, and six months before that is January.(i know some people don't like using the side books as a timeline calculator but it helps to make my brain hurt less so shush(love you dani))
okay anyway, starts in January, takes about-two three weeks to go through the movie, ends on a Friday-the coronation, which in January 2015-when the movie 'takes place', makes sense for me so-
this is my d1 timeline, aligned with January 2015. and Ben's birthday for me is January 16th, his coronation day, since its implied his birthday is coronation day in the movie.
D2-Six months later, in June, in the movie-its kind unclear just how the timeline spans, but it is 3 days, so start-which is on a Thursday since their picnic date is on a Thursday, Mal runs away that Thursday afternoon, vks and Ben come after her late Thursday/early Friday, Mal makes deal with Uma Friday and either the wand trade happens Friday at noon or Saturday at noon-but either way in the movie, the wand trade is the same day as cotillion-but i exnayed that and made cotillion the next day, Saturday, so Evie had time to actually change Mal's dress.
D3---whooo boy, this is where it gets confusing-so D3~! there is no clear thoughts of how long its been since 3, it's either been less than a year, OR its been NEARLY 3 YEARS, no in-between-but! the vks, minus Carlos, according to Escape from the isle, have graduated from Auradon prep-Ben, Mal, Evie, and Jay are all 18-19 at the very least, with Carlos at 17 and now a senior-and they were all 16 in the first movie, minus Carlos at 14, Jane is his age as well, so they're both 14-17 in d1 to D3, so that implies it's been at LEAST 2 years if not 2 and a half. so, from d1 to d3-its been 3 years, at least my version was, because it was the only way to make sense of their age jumps, how the vks graduated, and to give Mal and Ben just a bit more time to make their engagement make more sense because WOW she just had a mental breakdown over becoming lady of the court?! she does not need to be queen yet dear god no, she needs therapy not a crown.
that also allows for the visual changes of everything, like the new bridge plaza in both Auradon and the isle, along with giving Evie her starter castle-to which Doug says in d2to evie 'maybe in the next 3 years, you'll get that castle you always wanted(paraphrased)
but yeah the timeline is a whole mess, you'll be better off just making your own like i did, there is no timeline, only zuul.
but yeah, short version, D1-six months later-D2-2 and a half years alter-D3.

SAINT OF THE DAY (October 1)
On October 1, Catholics around the world honor the life of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, or St. Thérèse of Lisieux on her feast day.
St. Thérèse was born on 2 January 1873 in Alençon, France, to pious parents, both of whom were canonized by Pope Francis on 18 October 2015.
Her mother died when she was four, leaving her father and elder sisters to raise her.
On Christmas Day 1886, Thérèse had a profound experience of intimate union with God, which she described as a “complete conversion.”
Almost a year later, in a papal audience during a pilgrimage to Rome, in 1887, she asked for and obtained permission from Pope Leo XIII to enter the Carmelite Monastery at the young age of 15.
On entering, she devoted herself to living a life of holiness, doing all things with love and childlike trust in God.
She struggled with life in the convent but decided to make an effort to be charitable to all, especially those she didn’t like.
She always performed little acts of charity and sacrifices, not caring how unimportant they seemed.
These acts helped her come to a deeper understanding of her vocation.
She wrote in her autobiography that she had always dreamed of being a missionary, an Apostle, a martyr – yet she was a nun in a quiet cloister in France. How could she fulfill these longings?
“Charity gave me the key to my vocation. I understood that the Church had a Heart and that this Heart was burning with love.
I knew that one love drove the members of the Church to action; that if this love were extinguished, the apostles would have proclaimed the Gospel no longer.
The martyrs would have shed their blood no more.
I understood that Love comprised all vocations, that Love was everything, that it embraced all times and places...in a word, that it was eternal!
Then in the excess of my delirious joy, I cried out: O Jesus, my Love...my vocation, at last I have found it...My vocation is Love!”
Thérèse offered herself as a sacrificial victim to the merciful Love of God on 9 June 1895, the feast of the Most Holy Trinity.
The following year, on the night between Holy Thursday and Good Friday, she noticed the first symptoms of tuberculosis, the illness which would lead to her death.
Thérèse recognized in her illness the mysterious visitation of the divine Spouse and welcomed the suffering as an answer to her offering the previous year.
She also began to undergo a terrible trial of faith, which lasted until her death on 30 September 1897.
“Her last words, ‘My God, I love you,’ are the seal of her life,” said Pope John Paul II.
Since her death, millions have been inspired by her ‘little way’ of loving God and neighbor.
Many miracles have been attributed to her intercession. She had predicted during her earthly life that “My Heaven will be spent doing good on Earth.”
She is popularly known in English as the 'Little Flower of Jesus,' or simply the 'Little Flower.'
Pope Pius XI beatified Thérèse on 29 April 1923 and canonized on 17 May 1925.
Saint Thérèse was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II in 1997 — 100 years after her death at the age of 24.
She is only the third woman to be so proclaimed, after Saint Catherine of Siena and Saint Teresa of Avila.
She is the patron saint of missions and of florists.
St. Thérèse wrote:
'You know well enough that Our Lord does not look so much at the greatness of our actions, nor even at their difficulty, but at the love with which we do them."

Abortion * Children * Pregnancy Graphic 30 https://www.billkochman.com/Blog/index.php/landmark-conservative-victory-scotus-overturns-roe-v-wade/ WOW! Praise the Lord! They did it! After fifty years of enduring such an ungodly farce, which only brought shame to our nation in the eyes of God, on Friday, June 24, 2022, in a 6-3 ruling, the conservative justices of the Supreme Court of the United States mustered their courage and overturned Roe v. Wade. By so doing, they have sent the abortion issue back to the individual states where it actually belongs. What a hot battle will now ensue in each state as locally-elected officials and their constituents make their OWN decision with regards to this extremely divisive issue. I am so encouraged by this news! Their ruling gives me a little hope that maybe there is some light at the end of the tunnel. For once, the SCOTUS has done something right, after so many blunders in recent years, such as legalizing same-sex "marriage" in 2015. Of course, honestly speaking, the nation as a whole still has a long way to go, and a lot of serious repenting that still needs to be done, if she expects to be forgiven, and receive God's full blessings. As we read in the Holy Scriptures: "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." Proverbs 14:34, KJV "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14, KJV "The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous." Proverbs 15:29, KJV "The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles." Psalm 34:17, KJV "Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God." Isaiah 58:2, KJV "But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him." Acts 10:35, KJV To continue, despite all the devilish things the radical Left and those wicked pro-abortionists did to try to dissuade the conservative justices from making this ruling -- including protesting outside some of their homes, threatening their lives, demonizing them, etc. -- the six conservative justices stood firm. God bless them for that! Satan and his crowd are no doubt quite outraged and imploding at this very moment! In fact, as you have probably already read, the public protests by the ungodly wicked who insist on murdering their unborn children have already begun. Who knows what those extremists will do in coming days, weeks and months. We have already witnessed what they have done in the recent past when they don't get their way: mob violence on the streets! Quite frankly, it is totally absurd that Roe vs. Wade has lasted these past fifty years as it has, because as far as I know, there is absolutely no right to abortion to be found anywhere in the US Constitution. The word "abortion" does NOT even exist in the document anywhere. I have no doubt that the founders of this nation, and the authors of the US Constitution, would be horrified to learn how their carefully-crafted words have been so terribly twisted by radical politicians and justices in our modern day, in order to magically create support for such a heinous, wicked, devilish, murderous procedure as abortion. As we all know, surgical abortion did not even exist at that time, so how could the Constitution's framers possibly have even imagined it, much less condone it and protect it as a right in said document? They couldn't, and didn't. In short, my friends, the constitutional right to abortion has been a Big Lie, and a fabricated fiction, which has endured for these past fifty years due to weak politicians, and weak justices, who were too afraid to do anything about it. No one had the guts to do what really needed to be done.
So again, thank God that Roe v. Wade has finally been overturned, and the abortion battle will now continue in the individual states where it belongs. One thing is for certain. This ruling will make the 2022 midterms, and the 2024 presidential campaign season all the more interesting. Every politician -- whether representative, senator, governor or presidential candidate -- will now be forced to make an open, public stand on one side of the fence or the other. There are no longer any gray areas in which to hide. Red states will now become redder, and blue states will become bluer. That is a given. As many of you have no doubt already read or heard, not surprisingly, former US President Donald J. Trump is taking credit for this monumental, landmark decision, being as he nominated three of the justices who were a part of the majority opinion. While I personally don't care for Trump's constant self-glorification and tooting his own horn, in this regard, he is right. Without those three justices on the bench, this victory for Christian and Conservative values would have never happened. Of course, as a Bible-believing Christian, I also believe that the LORD was behind the developments which ultimately led to this ruling. After all, the Scriptures clearly inform us that He is the one who raises up and puts down leaders, as we can easily determine by the following group of verses: "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake." Romans 13:1-5, KJV "Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another." Psalm 75:5-7, KJV "Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:" Daniel 2:20-21, KJV "This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men." Daniel 4:17, KJV "I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me." Jeremiah 27:5, KJV "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will." Proverbs 21:1, KJV "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel." 1 Samuel 15:23-26, KJV "And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.
And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost." Acts 12:21-23, KJV But concerning Donald J. Trump, in my view, the truth is that unless those nasty Democrats soon find a way to totally destroy him, Trump may very well make a comeback, and be the next US president AGAIN! We all know that the radical Left -- and even some members of Trump's own party -- has been working really hard at it for years now, trying every possible trick in the book to bring down Trump. It is evident that the radicals are becoming more desperate and vicious by the month, as the 2024 campaign season draws ever closer! Yet Trump still stands. Is it by Divine Will? Good question. In fact, with the rulings the SCOTUS has just made regarding Roe v. Wade and Second Amendment gun rights, I suspect that the court has indirectly pretty much handed Donald Trump the Republican 2024 presidential nomination, and quite possibly a 2024 presidential victory as well, being as it was Trump's three judicial nominations which has resulted in these two rulings. Time will tell. These two rulings have certainly fired up Trump's base, and Trump himself is capitalizing on these two developments as much as he can. Crimes That Shook Britain (West Midlands)
Murder of Charlene Ellis and Latisha Shakespeare Best mates Letisha Shakespeare, 17, and Charlene Ellis, 18, were shot as they left a party in Aston, Birmingham, in the early hours of 2 January 2003.
Charlene’s twin Sophie, their cousin Cheryl Shaw, and friend Leon Harris were injured by the burst from an illegal submachine gun, fired from a car. The teenagers were innocent victims of a bitter gangland feud between the Johnson Crew and Burger Bar Boys.
Charlene’s half-brother Marcus Ellis, 24, along with Michael Gregory, 23, Nathan Martin, 26, and Rodrigo Simms, 20 - all alleged members of the Burger Bar Boys - were convicted of the murders and jailed for life.
The Black Panther Donald Neilson was a burglar but, in 1967, moved on to armed robberies of post offices and - in 1974 - murder.
Within nine months, he’d shot dead sub-postmasters Donald Skepper, Derrek Astin and Sidney Grayland during almost identical robberies. The media dubbed the balaclava-wearing killer the ‘Black Panther’.
In January 1975, he kidnapped heiress Lesley Whittle, 17, in Shropshire, and demanded £50,000 ransom but never got the money. Lesley was found dead months later - hanged in a drainage shaft. Neilson was given four life sentences for the murders. He died in prison in 2011.
Monster of Worcester Friday, 13 April 1973 - the mutilated bodies of siblings Paul, 4, Dawn, 2, and Samantha Ralph, just 9 months, were found impaled on a neighbor's garden railings.
Police arrested the Ralph family's lodger, David McGreavy, then aged 21. The children's dad Clive had left McGreavy babysitting while he collected his wife, Dorothy from work. But when Samantha cried, McGreavy - who'd been drinking - flipped and battered her to death.
Next, he strangled Paul, then McGreavy then mutilated their bodies with a pickaxe, before impaling them. In June 1973, David McGreavy pleaded guilty to three murders and was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 20 years.
He was controversially released on parole in December 2018.
Murder of Daniel Pelka Daniel Pelka, 4, was starved and beaten by his mother Magdalena Luczak, 29, and her boyfriend Mariusz Krezolek, 36, before he died in their Coventry home in March 2012.
Daniel was locked in a room, force-fed salt, and subjected to water torture. Krezolek broke Daniel's arm in 2011, but the couple claimed that he'd fallen off the sofa. Daniel weighed just 1st 9lb when he died.
Krezolek and Luczak blamed each other but were both convicted of Daniel's murder and jailed for life with a minimum 30-year term. A serious case review found there were missed opportunities to help little Daniel.
Social services had investigated in 2011 and teachers had raised concerns when the underweight child was caught stealing food and eating from bins. Luczak was found hanged in her cell in July 2015. Krezolek died of a heart attack in prison in 2016.
Tracie Andrews Lee Harvey, 25, was stabbed 42 times in his car on a quiet lane near Alvechurch, Worcestershire. His fiancée Tracie Andrews claimed a man had murdered Lee during a road-rage attack after a three-mile car chase.
Andrews sobbed during a press conference appealing for info, but it emerged that the couple had a volatile relationship, and Andrews could be violent. Police found the murder weapon hidden in the petrol tank of Lee's car and Andrews was charged with his murder.
Andrews claimed she acted in self-defense, but the court heard that she'd stabbed Lee after a row broke out in the car. She was convicted of murder and jailed for life. Andrews, was released in July 2011 after serving 14 years of her sentence.
Murder of Naomi Smith At 9:45 on 14 September 1995, Naomi Smith, 15, went to post a letter for her mum. Just before midnight, Naomi's father and her best friend found Naomi's half-naked body underneath the slide of a local playground a few hundred meters from her home in Ansley Common, Nuneaton.
Naomi had been sexually assaulted, her throat cut and body mutilated. DNA found on her body matched that of local man Edwin Hopkins, 19.
During his trial, it was revealed Hopkins had an obsession with knives. He was convicted of murdering Naomi during a frenzied attack and jailed for life. Hopkins maintained his innocence, but an application to review his minimum term in 2010 was declined.

Bhatia Communications & Retail (India) Ltd. Announces Key Outcomes of Board Meeting and Unaudited Financial Results for Q1 2024
Bhatia Communications & Retail (India) Limited, a prominent player in the Indian retail sector, has made significant announcements following its Board of Directors meeting held on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. The meeting, which took place at the company’s registered office located at 132, Dr. Ambedkar Shopping Centre, Ring Road, Surat, was a key event, setting the tone for the company's financial year.
The Board meeting, which commenced at 4:00 PM, was primarily focused on reviewing and approving the unaudited financial results for the quarter ending June 30, 2024. These financial results, along with the Limited Review Report, were thoroughly examined and subsequently approved by the Board. The Limited Review Report and the financial results have since been made available, reflecting the company’s commitment to transparency and regulatory compliance as per SEBI's (Listing Obligations & Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.
In addition to approving the financial results, the Board declared the first interim dividend for the financial year 2024-25. Shareholders can look forward to receiving a dividend of Re. 0.01 per equity share, which represents a 1% return on shares with a face value of Re. 1 each. The dividend is expected to be disbursed within the stipulated time frame, offering shareholders a timely return on their investments.
The meeting also saw the approval of the Directors' Report for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, further solidifying the company's commitment to good governance and comprehensive reporting. The Board has scheduled the Annual General Meeting (AGM) for Friday, September 6, 2024, at 1:00 PM. This AGM will be held through Video Conferencing (VC) and Other Audio-Visual Means (OAVM), allowing the company’s widespread shareholder base to participate in the proceedings remotely.
In preparation for the AGM, the Board has designated Friday, August 30, 2024, as the cut-off date for e-voting. Additionally, the Register of Members will be closed from Saturday, August 31, 2024, to Friday, September 6, 2024. These measures ensure that all eligible shareholders have the opportunity to engage in the voting process. To oversee the e-voting process, Mr. Ranjit Binod Kejriwal, a Practicing Company Secretary, has been appointed as the Scrutinizer for the 16th AGM.
The e-voting window has been scheduled to open on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 9:00 AM and will close on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 5:00 PM. This period provides shareholders ample time to cast their votes on the various matters to be discussed during the AGM.
Finally, the Board approved the Annual Report for the financial year 2023-24, which is now available for shareholder review. This report, along with the approved financial results, paints a comprehensive picture of the company’s financial health and strategic direction.
The meeting concluded at 6:00 PM, marking the end of a productive session that set the stage for the company's continued growth and success in the upcoming financial year. These decisions reflect Bhatia Communications & Retail (India) Limited's commitment to maintaining its leadership position in the industry while ensuring shareholder value and compliance with regulatory standards.

The Book Guild Reviews will post at 4:00pm on Mondays as they are completed. This means there will be plenty of Mondays that don't have any reviews posted. Book Guild Reviews are only for books that have been read in the current year. Each entry in this section links to its corresponding masterlist.
Reviews 2024 Reviews 2025
The Book Guild Polls will post at 4:30pm on Tuesdays as they are queued. There will be plenty of Tuesdays that don't have polls posted, I sometimes forget to queue them up or life gets in the way. Book Guild Polls will only cover books I either personally own or have actually read/am currently reading. Each entry in this section links to its corresponding masterlist.
I will not be linking to 2024's previous Book Guild Polls (bgp 1-25) unless I reread them in following years. They were an experiment during the early stages of creating this blog. They can be found under Polls on my main blog.
Polls 2024 Polls 2025
The Book Guild Shelves will post at 3:30pm on Thursdays as they are completed. This means there will be plenty of Thursdays that don't have any shelves posted. Book Guild Shelves are just like the reviews except they cover all of the books I've read within my lifetime (whereas reviews only cover the current year).
Unlike reviews or polls, shelves 2020 (for example) doesn't mean books read in 2020 it just means those are the shelves I posted to the blog in 2020. Each entry in this section links to its corresponding masterlist.
Shelves 2024 Shelves 2025
The Book Guild Meetings will post at 3:00pm on Fridays as they are queued. There will be plenty of Fridays that don't have meetings posted, I sometimes forget to queue them up or life gets in the way. Book Guild Meetings are essentially why this blog even exists, these are my book club meetings.
The beauty of a Book Guild Meeting is that it's not live! Meetings are numbered and tagged and the corresponding book & author is also always tagged. Just filter the meetings you're looking for if you join late.
A meeting will consist of key identifying information regarding the book and the meeting's date. There'll be question(s) section and then a keep reading break. The only thing after the line break is my own discussion based on a quote or excerpt.
All Book Guild Meeting books will be pulled from my categories identified further up. Here's a very basic example of the moving parts for a meeting:

Texas State Bar honors Fort Worth faith-based legal organization with Pro Bono Award
Methodist Justice Ministry, a faith-based family law nonprofit, received the 2024 Pro Bono Award from the State Bar of Texas on June 20, 2024.
This is the third time in the award’s 40-year history that a Fort Worth organization has been selected.

Yajaera Chatterson remembers how a phone call from Child Protective Services changed her family’s life.
It was a Friday afternoon in 2015 when she found out her sister was under investigation.
Chatterson was faced with a decision:
She could become a voluntary caregiver for her nephew, Jovani, until the case was closed or let him go to foster care.
She and her husband, Aaron, didn’t hesitate to take him in.
Her experience propelled her into a world of family law, where she would end up becoming the development director for Methodist Justice Ministry, the faith-founded firm that helped her obtain custody of her nephew.
Now, the organization is being recognized for providing free legal representation and ongoing support to survivors of traumatic domestic violence and neglect on a statewide level.
The State Bar of Texas awarded Methodist Justice Ministry the 2024 Pro Bono Award on June 20, marking the third time a Fort Worth organization has been a recipient in the award’s 40-year history.
“It’s a nice validation that within our legal community, our work for the last 18 years is being recognized as a vital and crucial help for vulnerable community members,” Chatterson said.
Methodist Justice Ministry was established in 2006 by Brooks Harrington, an attorney and ordained Methodist minister.
The ministry’s attorneys file lawsuits in Tarrant and Johnson county’s family courts, including protective orders, custody and divorce.
Its client households are generally within 125% above the federal poverty line and cannot afford legal counsel.
The Pro Bono Award honors a volunteer attorney organization, such as a legal aid organization, local bar association or nonprofit that has made an “outstanding contribution toward guaranteeing access to the legal system by the poor,” according to the award’s nomination form.
The last time a Fort Worth organization was a recipient of the award was the Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans in 2019.
“MJM (Methodist Justice Ministry) has grown from humble beginnings to become a vital pillar of support within the Fort Worth community,” according to the State Bar of Texas’ annual meeting notes.
Currently, one in three women in Tarrant County will be affected by intimate partner violence at some point in her lifetime, according to the county’s criminal district attorney website. Methodist Justice Ministry has filed over 1,200 family lawsuits and represented more than 3,000 vulnerable community members impacted by family violence.
Aaryn Landers Lamb, the organization’s new executive director, said the award recognizes the work the staff has been doing since its mission started several years ago.
“Tarrant County is not small. Fort Worth is not small,” Landers Lamb said. “I feel really proud that Methodist Justice Ministry gets to represent the community in this way.”

Canada reimposes visa requirements for Mexicans as asylum claims surge (BBC) In 2016, Canada removed visa requirements for Mexican nationals seeking asylum within its borders. On Thursday, Canada’s government reinstated that requirement, saying that an influx of people seeking asylum has pushed the country to a “breaking point.” According to the data, the number of Mexican nationals looking for asylum in Canada rose from 260 to 23,995 between 2016 and 2023—a 9,000% increase over just seven years. Many of those asylum seekers have headed to Quebec, with the province recording 60,000 new asylum seekers in the first 11 months of 2023. “The number of asylum seekers welcomed by Quebec is far too high and our services are overwhelmed,” said Christine Fréchette, the provincial immigration minister. Quebec has asked Ottawa for $1 billion CAD ($736 million USD) to help with the influx, while Mexico has expressed dissatisfaction with the country’s new policy.
Powerful storm in California and Nevada shuts interstate and dumps snow on mountains (AP) A powerful blizzard raged overnight into Saturday in the Sierra Nevada as the biggest storm of the season shut down a long stretch of Interstate-80 in California and gusty winds and heavy rain hit lower elevations, leaving tens of thousands of customers without power. Up to 10 feet (3 meters) of snow is expected in some areas. The National Weather Service in Reno said late Friday it expects the heaviest snow to arrive after midnight, continuing with blizzard conditions and blowing snow through Saturday that could reduce visibility to one-quarter mile or less. “High to extreme avalanche danger” is expected in the backcountry through Sunday evening throughout the central Sierra, including the greater Lake Tahoe area, the weather service said.
Rich Americans are ditching California and ‘taking their tax dollars with them’ (Yahoo Finance) The Golden State has lost its shine for its wealthiest residents. In 2023, California’s population dipped below 39 million, the lowest count since 2015, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Data shows the state lost 75,423 residents last year. Analysis of the approximately 750,000 people who have bid farewell to California over the last three years has revealed that thousands more high-earning, well-educated workers have left the Golden State than have moved in. This is a problem—as Joel Kotkin, a fellow at Chapman University, told the Los Angeles Times—because: “People who are leaving are taking their tax dollars with them.” California has the highest state income tax in the country. For a decade, the top income tax rate sat at 13.3%, but as of Jan. 1, the top rate was increased to an astronomical 14.4% for those earning more than $1 million. Ultra-wealthy Californians, the top 1%, typically pay between 40-50% of the state’s personal income tax revenue. And some have clearly had enough of propping up the state’s finances.
The U.S. national debt is rising by $1 trillion about every 100 days (CNBC) The debt load of the U.S. is growing at a quicker clip in recent months, increasing about $1 trillion nearly every 100 days. The nation’s debt permanently crossed over to $34 trillion on Jan. 4, after briefly crossing the mark on Dec. 29, according to data from the U.S. Department of the Treasury. It reached $33 trillion on Sept. 15, 2023, and $32 trillion on June 15, 2023, hitting this accelerated pace. Before that, the $1 trillion move higher from $31 trillion took about eight months.
War or amour? A French take. (Les Echos/France) We're making less and less love. A recent Ifop survey shows that the rate of sexual activity in France has fallen to a level not seen since 1970. Only 43% of those surveyed have sex every week, compared to 58% in 2009. The situation is even clearer for young people: more than a quarter of 18- to 24-year-olds have not had sexual intercourse in a year, five times more than in 2006. While love is on the wane, war is on the upswing. We see it close at hand, at the gates of Europe and around the Mediterranean. Every day we hear tales of barbarity that we thought were reserved for historical fiction. We're talking about it in France, where the army is preparing for the prospect of high-intensity conflict, and the state is officially organizing itself for a "war economy." The International Committee of the Red Cross tells us that more than half of millennials believe they will experience a third world war.
As Sweden joins NATO, it bids farewell to more than two centuries of neutrality (AP) Sweden’s last war ended in 1814, and when the rifles and cannons it aimed at Norway fell silent, the once-warring power would not take up arms again. For the next two centuries, Sweden embraced a policy of neutrality, refusing to take sides in wars or join any military alliance. It was a stance that kept peace at home and contributed to the country becoming a prosperous welfare state and humanitarian superpower. This remarkably long era of nonalignment is coming to a close as Sweden joins NATO. Sweden, like neighbor Finland, had long ruled out seeking NATO membership. That changed practically overnight when Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The invasion “had a shock effect on Swedish political life,” said Henrik Ekengren Oscarsson, a political scientist at the University of Goteborg. He analyzed polling data showing that support for NATO membership surged from 35% in 2021 to 64% after the invasion.
Surprisingly Weak Ukrainian Defenses Help Russian Advance (NYT) Russian forces continue to make small but rapid gains outside of the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, attributable in part to dwindling Ukrainian ammunition and declining Western aid. But there’s another reason the Kremlin’s troops are advancing in the area: poor Ukrainian defenses. Sparse, rudimentary trench lines populate the area west of Avdiivka that Ukraine is trying to defend, according to a Times review of imagery by Planet Labs, a commercial satellite company. These trench lines lack many of the additional fortifications that could help slow Russian tanks and help defend major roads and important terrain. U.S. officials said privately that it was concerning that Ukraine did not shore up its defensive lines early or well enough, and that it may now face the consequences as Russian units advance slowly but steadily beyond Avdiivka.
In a Land of Lavish Weddings, This Prenuptial Party Takes the Cake (NYT) When a member of one of India’s wealthiest families gets married, big-name guests and showstopping pomp and circumstance are nothing unusual. But it’s not every day that the invitees include royalty, business titans, Bollywood luminaries and Rihanna, for three days of a pre-wedding spectacular, months ahead of the actual ceremony. The lavish festivities that got underway on Friday for Anant Ambani, whose father heads Reliance Industries, have seized public attention. Mr. Ambani, 28, the younger son of Mukesh Ambani, will welcome the guests at a sprawling venue in the western Indian state of Gujarat, along with his fiancée, Radhika Merchant. The couple started the festivities earlier this week with a community feast: hosting thousands of people from neighboring villages and serving them Gujarati delicacies. But for the main event starting Friday night, more than 1,000 guests are expected. Notable invitees include Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta and Bob Iger of Walt Disney; present and former prime ministers of Canada, Sweden and Qatar; the king and queen of Bhutan; and Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit. Among the luxurious touches planned are chartered flights for the guests and people available to iron their clothes or help apply their makeup.
As besieged Gaza grows desperate, donors drop aid from the sky (Washington Post) From above, northern Gaza might be the skeletal remains of a forgotten ancient city, the broken pieces of its bombed-out buildings scattered like handfuls of chipped teeth. But the area, which for weeks bore the brunt of the fighting in Israel’s military campaign against Hamas, is far from abandoned. Its people are facing starvation, aid workers say, and clamoring for relief. Jordanian air force pilots dropped 33 tons of medical supplies, food and other necessities on Gaza on Thursday—vital support for those it reaches, but nowhere near enough to meet the widespread need in the besieged enclave of more than 2 million people. Neither are the truckloads of aid that are entering the strip at a declining pace—and that carry dangers of their own. More than 100 people were killed in Gaza City on Thursday and 700 wounded, health officials there said, after a crowd converged on a humanitarian aid convoy. Palestinian officials and witnesses blamed Israeli gunfire; Israeli officials blamed a stampede. “I think the airdrop is a last-resort, extraordinarily expensive way of providing assistance,” Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the principal U.N. agency for Palestinian affairs, told reporters Thursday in East Jerusalem. “I don’t think that the airdropping of food in the Gaza Strip should be the answer today. The real answer is: Open the crossings and bring convoys and medical assistance into the Gaza Strip.” “The amount of aid that’s reaching [Gaza] is not enough, whether by air or by truck,” a spokesman for the Jordanian Armed Forces said. “So any possible method that allows us to bring in aid, we resort to, to fulfill the humanitarian need.”
Can US strikes on Yemen’s Houthis be justified as ‘self-defence’? (Al Jazeera) Israel has used it as justification for the slaughter of more than 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza—with thousands more lost under the rubble and presumed dead—in under five months. And, now, the United States has used it to justify its air strikes on Houthi fighters in Yemen. The right of a sovereign state to act in self-defence, under international law, has been thrust into the spotlight in recent months as four concurrent conflicts and humanitarian crises—in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen—threaten all-out war in the Middle East. This week, however US Senator for Virginia Tim Kaine cast doubt on American claims that US-led air strikes on Houthi targets, done in retaliation for Red Sea attacks on commercial vessels the group claims are linked to Israel, constitute “self-defence”. “A narrow mission to defend US shipping, both military and commercial—that is Article 2 self-defence,” said Kaine, referring to the US Constitution. “Article 2 self-defence means you can defend US personnel, you can defend US military assets, you probably can defend US commercial ships. But the defence of other nations’ commercial ships in no way—and it’s not even close—that’s not self-defence.” US Senator for Connecticut Chris Murphy also appeared to reject Biden’s “self-defence” justification when he said: “This looks to me like war in every bit of the constitutional sense.
South Africa’s hardest job (Reuters) Dan Marokane is about to tackle the hardest job in South Africa: getting the lights back on. As CEO of state power utility Eskom, he takes on an organisation hampered by alleged coal theft and sabotage, which faces financial and technical crises. He will be working with a government shareholder that has a conflicted vision for the country’s future energy mix and is struggling to move forward on a major overhaul of its electricity supply industry. As South Africa heads for national elections in May, turning Eskom around and solving a persistent power crunch could rescue Africa’s most industrialised economy from a cycle of decline. Failure would mean the country is stuck with the status quo of crippling blackouts that currently cut off electricity for everything from homes and businesses to traffic lights and hospitals for up to 10 hours every day.
The Rise of the Do-Nothing Vacation (WSJ) The pendulum is swinging away from jam-packed trips and Instagram-worthy adventures and toward vacations with little to write home about beyond a pretty sunset and a cold drink. More vacationers say they want a true break to rest and recharge during their time off. Their do-nothing vacations have no schedule. These aren’t beach trips that involve surfing or kayaking, or foodie tours requiring hours of research—and decision fatigue. “Rest and relaxation” jumped ahead of having “a fun time” and spending “time with immediate family” as the main motivator for leisure travel, according to a February survey of 1,000 U.S. travelers.
