Cyntoia Brown was released from prison early Wednesday morning after being granted clemency by then-Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam in January, according to the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
Initially sentenced to life in prison for killing a man who bought her for sex when she was 16, Brown was released to parole supervision after spending more than a decade jailed.

Viene giudicata come fosse un’adulta e condannata all’ergastolo. . #carmeloabbate #storienere #cronacanera #cyntoiabrown #freecyntoia ❤️❤️❤️ https://www.instagram.com/p/B06B9Gqlram/?igshid=1kn2gmhsk9n3i

Been waiting for this interview a long time.
Kudos to The Breakfast Club for an exellent interview. cannot wait to read her book. I remember two years ago learning about her story on social media and sharing it on social media as well .as did many of those who reached out to see how they could help make a change for the better. A lot of rachetness and BS goes down on social media, and latley theres been a lot of talk about the negative implications its recently had on our culture and society so it's nice to see social media coming together for a good cause. and so nice to see Justice finally being served for this young woman. God bless her , God bless the governor for granting her clemency and good luck to her on all her future endeavors

👏🏿✊🏿💚⚖ #ArtIsAWeapon After 15 years, #CyntoiaBrown was finally released from prison, where she should not have ever been! Respect to all the #Blackwomen #organizers, #activists #artists who worked tirelessly to #FreeCyntoia #Art by @broobs.psd Via @npr: Cyntoia Brown, who served 15 years of a life sentence for killing a man when she was 16, has been released from a Nashville prison, Tennessee officials announced early Wednesday. Earlier this year, then-Gov. Bill Haslam took the unusual step of granting Brown clemency for what he called a "tragic and complex case," a major victory for Brown and her supporters, who for years have maintained that the 2004 killing was an act of self-defense. Over the years, the fight for Brown's release has brought prominent lawyers to her defense, a PBS documentary and backing from celebrities...Her case also inspired the introduction of state legislation aimed at protecting minors who are victims of sex trafficking. In 2006, Brown was convicted of aggravated robbery and first-degree murder for killing 43-year-old real estate agent Johnny Allen, whom she went home with after he picked her up for sex at a Sonic Drive-In in Nashville. She told police that she pulled a pistol out of her purse and fatally shot Allen because she thought he was reaching for a gun. She then fled with Allen's guns and money. She drove away in his pickup truck. Prosecutors claimed that Brown shot Allen as part of a plan to rob him, but Brown told police she was acting to protect herself. She was convicted and sentenced to life in prison over the killing. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that mandatory life sentences without parole for juvenile offenders are not constitutional, but Tennessee prosecutors successfully argued that Brown would technically become eligible for parole after 51 years, in 2055. Brown, now 31, was among more than 180 inmates serving life sentences in the state for crimes they committed as teenagers. Cyntoia Brown and the conservative State Government That Failed Her.
In my apartment, a headline suddenly flashed on the screen. This headline came up with the name of Cyntoia Brown in it.
At that moment I immediately thought of the several years I had stayed being updated on the story. I have known about Cyntoia’s case since 2010.
I thought of last month of Dec. 2018 in particular, when I heard that many activists were pushing for Republican Bill Haslam to help Cyntoia before his term was over. A feeling of hopelessness immediately washed over me.
Growing up in a deeply Republican state, I knew that a conservative would never have enough empathy to see the cruelty that was forced on Cyntoia Brown, a woman of color that was forced into sexual slavery as a young girl, in that whole situation. Fast forwarding back to today, Mon. January 7th, I saw the headline state that Cyntoia was being released.
I immediately felt pride and joy at seeing this. I was proud of the fact that so many activists I admired had fought valiantly in defense of Cyntoia’s humanity. I couldn’t have felt more enthusiastic, that is until I saw the rest of the news story. Cyntoia would only be granted clemency. This means that Cyntoia would be seen as a criminal for her own act of self-defense.
This is a despairing reality that women of color must face when living in areas with right-wing political cultures. When seeing the right’s constant use of phrases such as “self-defense” and “stand your ground” as paramount to their way of life, Cyntoia’s case is one of many where the standards shift for women of color.
Furthermore, upon seeing the statement from Bill Haslam I felt even more... disgusted at Cyntoia’s treatment. Haslam is claiming that Cyntoia’s release was because of “her extraordinary growth and rehabilitation”. Meaning he only saw Cyntoia as worthy of being set free because she was studying, and attending school while in prison. Not because Cyntoia was being forced into sexual slavery and raped by a man who was in his 40′s when she was a teen.
It is disappointing, but not entirely surprising, to see that Cyntoia is seen as a criminal in the eyes of conservatives. Cyntoia was the victim of several tragic crimes.
At this point, I don’t expect conservatives to endorse anything that would benefit women, and particularly women of color. I still can’t help but feel drained and exhausted at conservative efforts to suppress the few freedoms and joys woc have.
Cyntoia was an underage girl when she was victimized, shamed, and dehumanized. Unfortunately, many women of color have suffered injustices through the criminal system mostly through conservative efforts.
I will celebrate the fact that Cyntoia will finally be able to enjoy the comforts of her own home again. Cyntoia will have an education, and she will be working again. I have also found hope in the fact that years of working to free Cyntoia was eventually successful.
I still think it is important to point out the role conservative ideology played in furthering Cyntoia’s tragedy into a heartbreaking nightmare.

I’ve heard so much about her life story through social media (Shout out to Kim K.) so I wanted to learn more.
I enjoy reading autobiographies about people who have had hardships from a young age and grew up to overcome those hard times. It’s just another example about how we can not let our past determine our future. We can grow through those hardships and turn it into something positive and inspiring.

If you are black (a person of color) you cannot DEFEND yourself even against pedophiles? She is a hero and should be celebrated as one. This is UNACCEPTABLE.
