I really didn't expect this to blow up the way it did, thank you all so much! I'm reblogging with the pattern now since some people have asked for it.

(I made some corrections to it since I made my sweater. It's supposed to be symmetrical so if you see a stitch that isn't- mea culpa, pls adjust accordingly. It being symmetrical makes it easier to crochet - you don't have to think about what side you are currently on (L->R or L<-R) as it's the same stitches in either direction!)

Every pixel represents a stitch. My sweater (size XL) is 50 rows long (as you can see, it's cropped, you can make yours longer if you want!) and 74 stitches wide. I used bulky yarn, an 8mm hook for the body and a 6mm hook for the balloon sleeves.

If it's your first time crocheting a sweater, or you're not sure how to make the correct size, or you just don't want to freestyle: I recommend starting with a basic sweater pattern. Here is a lovely free pattern: Someday Sweater by Grace Forthefrills.

Basically, you can follow the Someday Sweater pattern exactly, and then use the above schematic for the front to make a DE Communism sweater.

In my case, I counted the rows for the shoulders as part of the 50 rows (hence why my star&antlers start right under my collar), but not the ribbing (so I started the ribbing after the 50 rows). If you're making a longer sweater, you can of course adjust this as you want.

The Someday Sweater pattern linked above includes cute sleeves, but if you want balloon sleeves like my sweater, here is a free pattern of a sweater that uses balloon sleeves: Hobbii's Vivian Sweater. So if you want it to look exactly like mine, follow Someday Sweater for the body (basic HDC), the body ribbing (FpHDC 2, BpHDC 2)& the collar (FpHDC 2, BpHDC 2). Then create the sleeves from the Vivian sweater (uses clusters of (dc, ch1, dc) - see pattern), but add the ribbing from the Someday sweater (FpHDC 2, BpHDC 2). I added this in black, as you can see on the photos. You can design however you want!

(Finally, tip for crocheting any garment: measure as you go! Hold it against your body occasionally.)

Here's a version of the pixel star&antlers without the grid, so that you can drop it in MSPaint and turn the grid on yourself (zoom 800%) and adjust the pixels to exactly how many stitches and rows you want to do:
