A statement from #AngelaDavis: “On Saturday January 5, I was stunned to learn that the #Birmingham #CivilRightsInstitute Board of Directors had reversed their previous decision to award me the #FredShuttlesworth #HumanRights Award. Although the #BCRI refused my requests to reveal the substantive reasons for this action, I later learned that my long-term support of justice for #Palestine was at issue. This seemed particularly unfortunate, given that my own #freedom was secured – and indeed my life was saved – by a vast international movement.And I have devoted much of my own #activism to international #solidarity and, specifically, to linking struggles in other parts of the world to U.S. grassroots campaigns against police violence, the #prisonindustrialcomplex, and racism more broadly. The rescinding of this invitation was thus not primarily an attack against me but rather against the spirit of the indivisibility of #justice. I support Palestinian #politicalprisoners just as I support current political prisoners in the Basque Country, in Catalunya, in India, and in other parts of the world. I have indeed expressed opposition to policies and practices of the state of Israel, as I express similar opposition to U.S. support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine and to other discriminatory U.S. policies. Through my experiences at Elizabeth Irwin High School in New York City and at Brandeis University in the late fifties and early sixties, and my subsequent time in graduate school in Frankfurt, Germany, I learned to be as passionate about opposition to antisemitism as to racism. It was during this period that I was also introduced to the Palestinian cause. I am proud to have worked closely with Jewish organizations and individuals on issues of concern to all of our communities throughout my life. In many ways, this work has been integral to my growing consciousness regarding the importance of protesting the Israeli occupation of Palestine. The trip to Birmingham, where I was born and raised, to receive the Fred Shuttlesworth Award, was certain to be the highlight of my year—especially since I knew Rev. September 9, 1957: As Fred Shuttlesworth and his wife Ruby attempted to enroll their children in a previously all-white public school in Birmingham, Alabama, a mob of Klansmen attacked them, with the police nowhere to be seen. The mob beat Shuttlesworth with chains and brass knuckles in the street while someone stabbed his wife. Shuttlesworth drove himself and his wife to the hospital where he told his kids to always forgive. His assailants included Bobby Frank Cherry, who 6 years later was involved in the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing. Frederick Lee "Freddie" Shuttlesworth, was a civil rights activist who led the fight against segregation and other forms of racism as a minister in Birmingham, Alabama. He was a co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, initiated and was instrumental in the 1963 Birmingham Campaign, and continued to work against racism and for alleviation of the problems of the homeless in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he took up a pastorate in 1961. He also helped Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement. Two images we used for the 6-9 & 10-12 yr olds history classes in the Omega Dr. Carter G. Woodson Academy yesterday. IMAGE 1--Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth in front of his home after it was bombed Christmas Day 1956, 5 days after he said he'd be working to desegregate buses in Bombingham. We used this photo to discuss his leadership of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and their work to establish citizen rights for African Americans in Bombingham, AL;

IMAGE 2-Robert Chambliss "Dynamite Bob" being taken into custody in 1963 for the  16th Street Church bombing. He was eventually convicted of the murder of Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson & Denise McNair and, according to an FBI informant, was the bomber of Shuttlesworth's home on 12.25.56. We used this photo to discuss ongoing and terroristic response of White Bombingham to when African Americans tried to establish their civil rights. On the bottom picture to the far left is my uncle Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. He was apart of the civil rights movement right along with Dr. Martin Luther King and wasn't put in the movie. They used direct quotes from my uncles mouth and portrayed them as words from Dr. King.... I personally don't understand why he wasn't in the movie. He played a very distinguished role in the movement and now and still to this day he's barely heard of. My uncle did so much for our rights and many have no clue of his existence. His home was bombed, he got Many death threats and he also marched for everything he believed in ! This movie is missing one very important person and fact so I don't understand why or how this is played for the world and its so inaccurate. I hope you guys read this and pass it on as well as add your comments on how you feel about the movie Selma. I haven't seen it and don't plan on it .... I usually don't get any attention on tumblr but I hope you guys read this and help me spread this information!

#MCM James Baldwin and Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth returned to #Alabama revisiting sites attacked by domestic #terrorist during the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement. Baldwin's documentary Heard It Through The Grapevine was filmed as Baldwin traveled through the South during 1980 reconnecting with the "roll call of unknown invisible people who did not die, but who's lives were smashed on the Freedom Road" This was during the same period that white supremacist J.B. Stoner was brought to trial in #Birmingham for his participation in the 50 black church bombings. Shuttlesworth said it was a miscarriage of justice to finally try someone after 22 years when trying them during the bombings could have changed the climate of the moment. Speaking in vintage sermon footage about the 1957 Christmas Day bombing of his church parsonage, Shuttlesworth said "Whoever did it didn't intend for me to get up but to be picked up somewhere... piece here and piece here. But if you're dedicated to God and the purposes of #God, I'm not worried.
