WILL WE STAND AGAINST THE DEMONIC?
Life in a moral wasteland The increasing marginalisation of Christianity may be welcomed by opinion-formers but it presents a fundamental challenge for society. With the decline of Christian teachings and godly values there has followed an abandonment of those moral principles which provide the glue holding society together. Ours is a world where an MP, someone who helps make laws shaping our…

A Hidden Life is a 2019 epic historical drama film written and directed by Terrence Malick. It stars August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, and Matthias Schoenaerts, with Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz in their final performances. The film depicts the life of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer and devout Catholic who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II.
The title is taken from George Eliot's Middlemarch:
... for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.

I am not a devout Christian, but Terrence Mallick's A Hidden Life does not mask it's parallels with the Passion of Christ. The film follows the path of conciencious objector Franz Jägerstätter and his family, who work their farm high in the Austrian Alps. The cast are all there: the mayor as Herod, the judge in Berlin, Pilate. The protogist, waits, one of three on a bench moments before the inevitable end. There is a pivotal moment, when an icon painter asks, "will I ever paint a real Christ". The film, I think, suggests we are watching one. It's a monster of a film at nearly 2 hours, but so beautiful to watch. The Austrian Alps juxtaposed against the unravelling of a society and the cost of Franz's decision are emotionally very tough. The cameras play reportage to a wonderful life. Small children run through pastures, a man and a woman in love. The daily graft of the farm work and yearly cycle. It makes the tragedy and brutality even worse when it inevitably comes, as the viewer knows it will.

Quote
In the case of A Hidden Life, the answer is that Malick elegantly and accurately depicts what faith looks like, and his depiction of faith is not what most people would hope or suppose. It definitely looks nothing like God’s Not Dead: it is no campy, one-sided apologetic. It is not even a creative illustration of the gospel like Lewis’ original The Chronicles of Narnia. Interestingly, the movie may not even be an accurate biographical portrayal of Franz Jägerstätter’s life. These are not what Malick wants to show us. Instead, he wants to show us genuine faith, for our moral and spiritual edification.

Bible References
Matthew 10:17-22
Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus predicts the coming persecution of his disciples. And we can see his prophetic word realized through the ages.
Think of St. Peter himself, crucified upside down in the circus of Nero; of Felicity and Perpetua, thrown to wild animals because they wouldn’t deny their faith; of Thomas More, who resisted King Henry VIII and paid for it with his head; of Paul Miki, the Japanese Jesuit, who was crucified for announcing the Christian faith; of Miguel Pro, who was shot to death for defying a repressive Mexican government, shouting as he was shot, “Viva, Cristo Rey!”; of Franz Jägerstätter and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, whom the Nazi regime put to death; of Maximilian Kolbe, who died at Auschwitz, willingly taking the place of another man. And the list goes on and on.
Indeed, the martyrs have come from all corners of the world, and they have spoken Greek, Latin, French, German, English, Japanese, Polish, and many other languages besides. Friends, this, strangely, is the army that undermines the foundations of the fallen world through the centuries. This is the great fighting force that Jesus has unleashed and continues to unleash.

7. A Hidden Life … for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs. - George Eliot Malick's best since Tree of Life. A gorgeous film about Franz Jägerstätter, a Catholic martyr in Austria, who rather than joining the Nazi party, chose instead to devote himself to his faith and die for his convictions. This is about everything it means to be Catholic.
