The other day when I posted that I got the Frankenweenie novel, I started to read it and I literally just now finished the whole thing! But the thing is, the book talked about how after Sparky died, Victor never wanted to get out of his bed after that. And to make matters worse, at the beginning when his mom and dad were “complimenting” Victor’s homemade movie, he shook his head because he knew that his parents were only “supporting” him and that they didn’t understand him or what he does :( Poor Victor 😭😭

Wine Dad Literature Club || Doki Doki Literature Club AU || Verse Bio
“{Name?!} is that you?!”
You somewhat recognise the voice calling to you & turn around to see a man who has familiar features you remember from a time ago… It takes you a moment as the dark haired man walks up to you before the recognition hits you.
“Liam?!”
“Hi, {Name}, it’s been some time hasn’t it?” William Afton, your old childhood friend & neighbour laughs back quietly in that familiar quiet wry accent. You haven’t seen him since he’d set off for university for engineering… Or something like that. He reaches out, grasping your shoulder in a familiar warm grip, the proximity confirming he still wore the same cologne he had taken a liking to back when you were both teenagers.
“I didn’t think I’d see you here… Are you visiting {Town} or is your arrangement more permanent?”
Tumblr media
“More permanent,” you confirm with a slight laugh, rubbing at the back of your neck.
“Oh! Really? Well, if you’re interested myself & a few friends of mine have a book club we’ve been running for a while. Maybe a bit pretentious in terms of the material we usually bring in to discuss but we spend a good majority of it drinking wine & talking about the books, jobs, hobbies, the kids, anything really.”
“Wait, wait, wait! The kids?” you asked, laughing a bit as you look him up & down, ignoring his eye roll. Of course in terms of the time passed it made sense William would have had kids but honestly imagining the “wild child” he was back then it also made sense to be taken aback & you didn’t mean any harm in your shock.
“Yes. The kids. All of us have them. We’re just a group of single fathers hanging out & expanding our horizons. I figured maybe you would be a good fit for the group but if not-“
“I suppose I could check it out,” you blurted, before he could finish his sentence.
“Fantastic. We meet on Fridays & Wednesdays. Take my number & just give me a call. We switch locations quite a bit,” he laughs again, handing you a card with his number scrawled across it before he turns & walks away. You feel your cheeks getting oddly flush as you type his number into your phone wondering why you feel so flustered when you suddenly freeze & realise something.
Why had he went out of his way to let you know he was a SINGLE dad?!
Despite your heated face you reason it was just Liam being his usual coy mildly cryptic self. He’d been that way since you were kids after all. Now about that club…
You arrive at the grand fortress that you couldn’t believe was classed as a “home” the gothic architecture had obviously been a castle or palace at some point in the past, apparently it belonged to one of the club members… You couldn’t help but wonder if someone this egregiously wealthy could be anything short of insufferable, William had described their tastes as pretentious after all… You roll your eyes but before you can even raise you fist to knock at the door it was pulled open by none other than William himself who gave you a warm smile.
“I’m so glad you made it, {Name}. Come on I’ll show you to the library Claude ever so graciously lends us… We probably take advantage of it a little,” he tells you, politely taking your elbow & guiding you through the utterly breathtaking home.
You step into the library & your jaw would have dropped if you had less decorum… Not only was this library beautiful & filled with some books that were probably worth more than you could ever afford but the single dads were… A sight to say in the least.
The first one you caught sight of wasn’t even looking in your direction & he looked rather young to be a father in your opinion, his hair was striking a glimmering platinum blonde with pink streaks running through it. He had bright mint green eyes, made brighter by the black liner framing them & obvious freckles across his nose which was currently wrinkled as he was sipping his wine, his brows furrowed before he laughed & said “1875, you bastard. You can’t fool me!”. His laughter was a lilting baritone, it almost sounded liked music, he was undeniably entrancing, he seemed to have an aura that almost encouraged keeping attention on him.
Tumblr media
A snort brought your attention to a very tall fair skinned man, easily the tallest member of the group obvious even with him currently leaning over a chair. He seemed to be the oldest, at least his silver hair & glasses gave that first impression but a closer look at his face revealed he was in his late 30’s at most though his grin was mildly distracting, you couldn’t help but notice he had very sharp teeth… From here you couldn’t seem to tell exactly what colour his eyes were, they were very pale, if you had to guess they seemed to be a shade of blue but you would have to approach him to be entirely sure. Approaching him wasn’t something that necessarily found unappealing.
Tumblr media
This time it was a snide comment from the corner of the room that set your eyes to wandering again & finally you have seen every member of the club. Dirty blonde hair is the first thing you notice, mostly because this man has a beard unlike the rest of the club. Unlike the other club members he DOES notice you looking at him & his hazel eyes immediately lock on yours & he doesn’t blink. You’re vaguely aware he’s dressed in a very expensive looking suit but you’re pointedly aware of the fact something about him seems… Off. He doesn’t have the same welcoming energy the others do, in fact your instincts are screaming at you to not approach him though you have no idea why that is.
Tumblr media
It’s very easy for you to break eye contact with him to look at William who just chuckles & clears his throat.
“Kairo, Claude, Hans, this is {Name}. The new member I was telling you about.”
“Congratulations on your recent reunion,” the man who you suspected was named Claude said, surprisingly quietly though with a voice as deep as his you heard him just fine.
That sent Kairo(?) into a fit of giggles into his glass before he gave you a bright wide grin & wink.
“God, you’re hilarious. Or maybe the wine is making me think everything is funny. Oh Claude, where would I be without you?”
“Probably in your house, Kair. I doubt I enrich your life that substaintally…” the now confirmed Claude mused, scratching at the back of his head.
Hans didn’t contribute anything to the conversation other than a quiet scoff & once again you felt that… Strange put off feeling before William clapped his hands together.
“Well, pleasantries are done, enjoy the club,” he chuckled walking towards an armchair & leaving you with a few options.
Do you:
Stay with William? {Type “Option 1″ in the replies or click here} Approach Kairo?  {Type “Option 2″ in the replies or click here} Approach Claude?  {Type “Option 3″ in the replies or click here} Do not Approach Hans. {do not Type “Option 4″ in the replies or do not click here}

Not a poll request (so don't worry if you don't want to answer on the blog) but - could we get each of the mods' top 10 horror movies? (: I'd be so interested in hearing them!
Long post!
Mod Z:
*long sigh* *opens letterboxd*
K-12 (2019)
NOTE: Yk what imma just leave this here
2. Beau is Afraid (2023)
NOTE: a masterpiece i probably won’t rewatch for a long time but since i’m an ari aster truther it deserved this spot
3. Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
NOTE: Yes
4. The Crow (1994)
NOTE: Awesome ass movie. Awesome ass soundtrack. An absolute classic. I have the graphic novel it was based on and it’s one of the best things I have in my library
5. Carrie (1976)
NOTE: Stephen King’s the best at writing real characters <3
6. The Craft (1996)
NOTE: As a wicca myself, accurately depicted teen witches are my jam and this film did the best job at it
7. Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
NOTE: The only reason this isn’t in the top 5 is because i haven’t seen it in a while. If u had asked me in early 2023 i would’ve put this in second place for sure
8. Cam (2017)
NOTE: So underrated. Go watch this on Netflix now while u don’t know anything about it
9. Frankenweenie/Nightmare before Christmas/Edward Scissorhands
NOTE: CHILDHOOD (lumping them together cuz i couldn’t decide which tim burton film to add)
10. Smile (2022)
NOTE: okay wait this scared me shitless at the theatre and i just convinced myself this movie was bad to stop myself freaking out but this is a genuinely good and scary movie i’ve made up my mind
These are subject to change and Invisible Man (2020) definitely deserves an honorable mention but I haven’t seen it in a while to check if it still holds up
----
Mod L:
The Thing (1982)
Absolute masterpiece. Perfect marriage of cast, visuals, music, and script. They (audiences in 1982) hated Jesus (John Carpenter) because he told them the truth.
2. Ravenous (1999)
I love social horror more than life itself, and this is a pitch-perfect example. I recommend Atun-Shei Films' Overanalyzing Ravenous, if you haven't seen it yet.
3. Ju-on: The Grudge (2002)
See above re: social horror. I never stop thinking about how this series was inspired by rising incidents of domestic violence in Japan - how the contagion of violence in the home spreads to anyone who comes in contact with it.
4. Demon (2015)
This would pair amazingly well with my next pick, which is:
5. La Llorona (2019)
To quote a friend of mine after we watched Demon, "there is no society without memory."
6. Black Christmas (1976)
Truly ahead of its time as a slasher, as well as in its politics. Ladies, never date a Peter, and DON'T trust the Toronto Police.
7. The Devils (1971)
Nobody was doing it like Ken Russell, and nobody ever will again.
8. The Changeling (1980)
This movie understands the greatest horror of all: Joseph Kennedy Sr.
9. Us (2019)
My favourite Peele to date, no I will not be budged on this point.
10. Peeping Tom (1960)
An extremely prescient film about the male gaze and the medium of film.
(Mod Sus releases their own once they get the braincells rubbing for more than 5 movies)

Frankenweenie (2012, Tim Burton)
01/04/2024
Frankenweenie is a 2012 animated film directed by Tim Burton.
The film is the stop motion adaptation of the short film of the same name made by Burton himself in 1984, clearly inspired by the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.
The film was nominated for the 2013 Academy Awards as best animated film.
In 1971 Victor Frankenstein, a boy passionate about cinematography and science, lives in the monotonous town of New Holland with his parents Edward and Susan and his little dog Sparky. Victor's talents are observed at school by his classmates: the neighbor Elsa Van Helsinge (niece of the sour Mayor Bergermeister), the hunchbacked boy Edgar, the obese and naive Bob, the pretentious Japanese boy Toshiaki, the sinister Nassor and a very strange blonde girl called Weird Girl, who owns a cat called "Mr. Whiskers". Victor, however, has little contact with them, being too busy with Sparky: Victor's father then encourages his son to join the baseball team to make new friends and to practice a sport; at the game, Victor manages to hit a splendid home run but Sparky, chasing the ball down the street, is hit by a car and dies before Victor's eyes.
But then, inspired by the galvanic experiments of the science teacher Mr. Rzykruski, Victor digs up the little dog from the pet cemetery and takes him to his improvised laboratory in the attic; he manages to revive the dog using the electricity of lightning. The following day, however, Sparky leaves the attic to chase Mr. Whiskers, causing some damage in the neighborhood until he is noticed by Edgar, who asks Victor to teach him how to resurrect the dead and threatens him to reveal his secret to everyone if he doesn't. In order to keep Sparly's existence hidden, Victor agrees and the two revive a goldfish, which inexplicably becomes invisible.
Learning about Edgar's invisible fish, Toshiaki and Bob fear that they won't be able to win the science competition at the annual fair, and so Toshiaki tries to make Bob fly with a rudimentary jetpack improvised with bottles of fizzy drink, but fails and Bob falls from the roof, breaking his arm.
The group then decides to carry out resuscitations separately: Edgar prepares to resuscitate a dead rat found in the garbage, Nassor his mummified hamster "Colossus", Toshiaki his dead turtle Shelley, Bob an expired package of Sea Monkeys and Weird Girl a dead bat. After electrocuting the bodies, the kids involuntarily transform the dead animals into monsters due to their feelings of competition: Edgar's rat becomes a wererat, Shelley an enormous Gamera-like monster, Bob's Sea Monkeys become little monsters amphibians similar to Gremlins and Mr Whiskers, who held Weird Girl's bat in his mouth while it was electrified, a monstrous vampire cat.
After finding Sparky near his tombstone in the animal cemetery, Victor sees the monsters attacking the fair and runs to help his companions: the Sea Monkeys explode by eating very salty popcorn, Colossus is crushed by Shelley, while she and the Wererat turns back into a corpse after being electrocuted again. In the general chaos, Elsa's poodle, Persephone, is captured by Mr Whiskers and transported to the city windmill.
The citizens, feeling pity for the dog's death, decide to reward Sparky for his courage by connecting his electrodes to the batteries of their cars to revive him again.

A comprehensive list of every single Frankenstein adaptation i have ever read/watched and my reviews of them
Universal Frankenstein 1931
I hate this movie with my whole being. It's like they read the book upside down and backwards. Hate the creature's design. 1/10
Young Frankenstein
A hilarious spoof of the Universal film. Gene Wilder kills it as Frederick von Frankenstein. Creature design is much better than Universal, I love the non functional zipper on his neck. So silly and goofy. 9/10 (minus one point for Creech fucking being an important joke/plot point bc it makes me uncomfortable)
Junji Ito's Frankenstein
A mostly faithful comic adaptation of the original novel. Creature design is fantastic but he has short hair for some reason. Very cool art. 8/10
Frankenstein Alive, Alive!
Literally my favorite graphic novel. Bernie Wrightson cared about the Creature so much and it really shows. Incredible adaptation exploring the rest of Creech's life. 11/10 cannot recommend enough
Frankenweenie
Great Tim Burton movie. I love Sparky. Another successful spoof of the Universal film. 7/10 (minus points for being lowkey racist/xenophobic)
The Rocky Horror Show / Picture Show
I'm lumping in the musical and movie together. I love RHPS with my whole being. And it's a weirdly good adaptation. Dr. Frank N Furter's desire to create the perfect artificial man is explicitly queer. Rocky is born and immediately starts singing about how he's confused and miserable. 8/10
I, Frankenstein
Not a great movie but I did kind of enjoy it. Adam Frankenstein is caught in the celestial war of good and evil because he is neither human nor demon. His design sucks because he's just a guy, not nearly fucked up enough. Also he's not an incel which is very out of character unfortunately. 5/10
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein
What the fuck is this book. Reading it was a roller coaster ride of "ok i dig this" and "what the actual fuck am I reading". All you need to know is the author sucks the human soul out of Victor and makes Creech a furry. 2/10
Frankenstein: A New Musical
I love this musical!! It's mostly book accurate with great portrayals of every single character. The original production's Creature design sucks though, it's literally just the actor with no prosthetics or makeup or anything. The music ranges from average musical stuff to absolute bangers. 9/10
Edward Scissorhands
I love this movie so I'm counting it because the Inventor makes an artificial human which is basically Frankensteining. Edward is adorable I love him so much. I think the movie is a great metaphor for the treatment of disabled/neurodivergent people in society. 8/10
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Specifically Sally and Dr. Finkelstein. Dr. Finkelstein is a super shitty dad to his creation, and Sally just wants to go out in the world and be a normal monster girl. As a Frankenstein adaptation 9/10 also 10/10 movie
X Files: The Post-Modern Prometheus
Incredible retelling with fantastic references to the original text. Mulder and Scully get justice for a monster in a crazy small town. And the episode is in black and white for no reason other than drama. But for some reason the Creature, who is called El Mutato, r**es people so for that unfortunately 7/10

Halloween asks.
I cast ASK ALL >:3
DUDE WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU
Tumblr media
anyway-
The smell of pumpkin guts or rotting leaves?
Leaves
Sweet or salty pumpkin seeds?
Salty?? I didn't even know they came sweet, what
Store bought or pumpkin patch pumpkins?
Pumpkin patch. Clearly superior
Wool or knit sweaters?
Tough question since i have some of each. Let's say wool
Halloween party or exploring haunted places?
Trespassing is illegal but poking around an old place is always fun
Candy corn or mellowcreme pumpkins?
*slams fist on table* Pumpkins. Yes.
Apple cider donuts or pumpkin donuts?
Apple cider! I think the pumpkin flavor often gets lost in the cakiness of the doughnut, personally
Apple pie or pumpkin pie?
I make a good pumpkin pie, but I gotta go with apple again on this
Scary costume or something silly?
Neither. Niche >:)
Still, silent nights or rainy, windblown ones?
Those blustering stormy nights are just the right balance of nerve-wracking and consoling
Hocus Pocus or Halloweentown?
I haven't seen Halloweentown all the way through, but I'm not a big fan of Hocus Pocus
Witches or ghosts?
Ghosts
Raking leaves or climbing trees?
Resident tree-climber. There's no need to rake leaves out here
Ouija boards or ghost stories around a campfire?
As a Catholic, I condemn the former, but a good spooky yarn is always welcome
Frankenweenie or The Corpse Bride?
I liked Corpse Bride. Not my favorite Halloween movie by a long shot, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it
October or November?
DUDE HOW CAN I PICK?? I think I'll go with November though. I know most people rush on to Christmas the minute midnight hits on Halloween, but for us Catholics, November is actually dedicated to the holy souls in Purgatory, so it's technically even more Halloween-y than the Halloween Month itself, lol
Black cats or owls?
Black cats. Owls are nice, but I love the v o i d
Fireplace or candlelight?
CANDLES. CANDLES. CANDLES. CANDLES. CANDLES. *demented screeching*
Monster movies or their classic novels?
Some are good, some aren't. I'm not too picky about medium
Carve or paint pumpkins?
I usually paint mine so that they last longer, but my family carves theirs

FRANKENWEENIE's Books ~part 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🇺🇸FRANKENWEENIE: A GRAPHIC NOVEL
Publisher:Disney Book Group (2013/2/12)
The content is truly depicted to the original movie. This is useful to draw because I can easily check the dialogue and background.
The art is beautiful with black-and-white thickly painted but the wide shot is rough. Toshiaki looks like a sweet bun.
Tumblr media
.....Nassor????
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🇺🇸FRANKENWEENIE: A CINEMATIC STORYBOOK
Publisher:Disney Press (2012/9/4)
ages 6 to 8. The book is a very concise version of the story. Or rather, it is not drawn to the end. The story ends abruptly after the children have revived the monster.
Few characters other than Victor and Sparky appear. There's no room for anyone to enter their worlds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🇯🇵FRANKENWEENIE: DISNEY GOLD PICTURE BOOK
Publisher:KODANSHA(2012/12/18)
ages 2 to 4. The price is low.
The content may be difficult to understand if you have not seen the movie because the movie is forcibly summarized. This is difficult for children of the target age group.
Nassol, Weird Girl and Bob are not appear in this book.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🇯🇵FRANKENWEENIE : PICTURE BOOK
Publisher:KODANSHA(2012/12/6)
ages 4 to 6. This is much the same as the book mentioned above.
Nassor don't even exist. He isn't absolutely necessary in the story. Poor thing😢

An idea for The Graveyard book (The film adaptation stuck in limbo)
I have an idea. Not that anyone would listen to me as I'm just a fan but Neil Gaiman handed Disney the film rights to The Graveyard book years ago because he wanted Henry Selick (Director of Nightmare before Christmas) to direct an adaptation of the story in stop motion (like his Coraline, which is also based on a Neil Gaiman novel). Disney once wanted Danny Elfman to compose another musical for them after Nightmare before Christmas became a cult classic. Danny Elfman gave them the script and demos for a psychotically dark musical to be called "Little Demons." So here's my idea. Why not get Danny Elfman involved as he was with Nightmare before Christmas, get Henry Selick back on board, and turn The Graveyard book into a Gothic, stop motion, musical?
(Side question: Why wasn't Frankenweenie made into a musical?) Tim Burton has made it very clear he has no desire to make a Nightmare before Christmas sequel but Disney wants to recapture it's cult phenomena status. Neil Gaiman wanted Henry Selick to direct The Graveyard book as a stop motion movie for Disney. Disney wanted Danny Elfman to give them another Gothic musical. Why not merge all these things together? Think how good The Graveyard book could be if done in the style of Nightmare before Christmas more than Coraline. (that is to say with a musical slant). You could have Danny Elfman, himself, voice Silas to get a Jack Skellington vibe out of the Bagheera-vampire.

Frankenstein Adaptation Brainstorming...
Okay, so I was listening to the I, FRANKENSTEIN episode of We Hate Movies; it reminded me of why I loved the novel in the first place, how supposedly Guillermo del Toro has plans for his own adaptation (something to look forward to when the workers finally get their due pay) & I just thought of a bunch of ideas of what would I do if I had the budget & skills to adapt the story to film.
Have Victor Frankenstein bring his creation (for simplification I'mma call him Adam) to life via alchemy, not science. As much as I love the story, I hate that the public's takeaway all these years was that Victor's pursuit of scientific research was what did him in, not his hubris or negligence as a science-daddy. Every movie that has had a plague caused by medical research I blame on this long-standing interpretation of Frankenstein's story & I've had enough of it. Especially in a Covid-19 plague-ridden world fostered by anti-education pundits and supporters who believe willful ignorance is the same thing as having a personality. For the record, that's actually why I legitimately liked the animated FRANKENWEENIE remake; THAT version of Victor Frankenstein brought his dead dog back to life out of love in spite of an anti-science, anti-education society, while his classmates created kaiju-style monsters cuz they were just in it for the fame.
Film Adam's (earlier) scenes backwards. Theoretically this would depend on the film's initial budget, but I would want to film Adam's scenes backwards similarly to the dwarf dream sequence in TWIN PEAKS, or Sadako's spooky walk in RINGU. Adam's appearance is described in the book as being beautiful, but also unworldly. Even Mary Shelley herself described her nightmare that inspired the story of being about a creature moving in an unnatural manner. These days folks have interpreted that as him having an uncanny valley effect, centuries before "uncanny valley" was even a thing. Hence filming the actor moving backwards & then playing the film in reverse, a good ol' Jean Cocteau method, would be perfect to illustrate on film how off-putting & seemingly unnatural Adam would look to others. Depending on the budget, this might only take place during the first half of Adam's life story. Like as the story goes on, as he matures & faces more hardship, he becomes more human & his movements become more natural. And of course during the "backwards" parts of the film the actor's dialogue would be pre-recorded & lip-synced backwards on set.
Give the story a queer edge. Not gay subtext, but text right there on the screen. What I always got out of the story wasn't that Victor was in the wrong to play god, but that he was a negligent science-daddy who wasn't willing to accept the responsibility of raising a science-child. I say we take that up to its realistic, real-world parallel: If you're not willing to have a child who is gay or trans, etc., then you shouldn't have agreed to be a parent at all. In the scene where Adam asks that Victor create a companion for him, Adam expresses he does not wish to be a father himself. Victor offers to make sure his lady friend can't get pregnant, but then Adam clarifies that's not what he meant. He wants a male companion. And that's why Victor refuses to grant his wish. Because he's a bigot who cares more about the "ew! gay!" factor rather than someone else's happiness. It also adds an extra layer of rage on Adam's part that we can kind of empathize with when he murders Victor's wife. If Victor thinks he has the right to deny Adam happiness with another man, then why should Victor be inherently granted the bliss of a heteronormative relationship?
As far as casting goes, I'd want to cast Norman Reedus as Adam. This is a bit of self-indulgence on my part. (^_^) In the book Victor's first-person description of his creation is of "being beautiful", except for the color of his eyes. So having a good-looking actor play Adam isn't a HUGE stretch for us fans of the novel. Why Norman Reedus, though? Despite what you might think, it's not because of the WALKING DEAD trivia aspect. (Though that couldn't hurt.) It's more because a) I've always thought Norman Reedus was handsome, b) I loved him as the voice of Striker in HELLUVA BOSS, and c) that low, raspy quality to his voice I think would work really well for Adam's characterization. This is a guy who is maybe a year old in age, but he's faced so much hate, rejection & isolation from the world that emotionally he has already aged to that of a lonely, damaged adult. (Goth and emo bands like Evanescence, Good Charlotte or Paramore could NOT have come sooner for this guy's level of angst.) Also he'd be the only American in a cast of mostly Brits. Partly because Adam is an outsider in the society he was created in. (That was the ONE thing I liked in Kenneth Branagh's FRANKENSTEIN; casting the American Robert De Niro as Frankensten's creation.) But also you could find a bit of subtext about the American being the messed-up child of British colonists.
But, yeah, I just wanted to get this creative outlet off my chest cuz I really don't see myself being successful enough to actually make this happen.
If there's anyone reading this who DOES, you have my permission to use any of these ideas. Go nuts! I can't copy-claim any of these ideas if I wanted to, & I'd rather see it fall into the hands of someone with a great mind who thinks alike who is capable of making this Frankenstein adaptation.
ADDITIONAL MINI-TANGENT: The big reason I hated Kenneth Branagh's FRANKENSTEIN was basically the same for why I hated Francis Ford Coppolla's DRACULA. Both movies just gave off a feel of "We're too edgy & cool for this slow-burn Gothic horror, we're gonna be loud & IN YOUR FACE with the blood & the gore & the sex & the screaming! We're MODERN!" Horror novels that I loved for the foreboding atmosphere, SUBtext & lingering dread were turned into movies that so DESPERATELY wanted to be hard-core they wound up coming off as way too try-hard for my own Gothic horror tastes.

Good/Great horror movies (If not, movies with a hint of horror) for the month and upcoming Halloween: my recommendations...
The Scream duology (also Scream 4, if you’re into it).
The Alien duology (or trilogy, if you want to watch Alien 3 in its original form or the Assemby Cut... and then there’s the video game Alien: Isolation).
The Terminator duology i.e. the first two Terminator films (you might argue that the second film is less scary, but in the end, it still has some good scares).
The Nightmare Before Elm Street films, from the very first film, 3: Dream Warriors, and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare... maybe even Jason vs. Freddy, for some crossover action.
Speaking of Jason Voorhees, there’s the first four films of the Friday the 13th series (Friday the 13th, Part 2, Part 3, and The Final Chapter) and VI: Jason Lives.
The very first Halloween (also Halloween II and/or also the recent one, just in time for Halloween Kills).
John Carpenter’s The Thing (also Roger Corman’s The Thing, for a classic take).
   They Live.
The first, second, and fifth Final Destination films.
The Evil Dead trilogy (yes, including Army of Darkness).
George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead (also Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead).
   28 Days Later.
Ringu and its American remake The Ring.
The Japanese Ju-On: The Grudge duology (also The Curse).
   The Babadook.
Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Us.
   Audition.
   The Exorcist.
   The Omen.
   Creepshow.
   Brian de Palma’s Carrie.
   Christine.
The Shining (unfaithful to the novel, but if deemed as a standalone set in an alternate universe retelling of the tale, well...)
   Misery.
Frank Darabont’s The Mist (I know it’s a cruel film, but that’s the beauty of it).
   1408: Director’s Cut.
Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers and The Descent.
   [REC]
The very first Paranormal Activity (and believe me, you better watch this on DVD for many alternate endings, none of them pretty).
   Cloverfield.
   10 Cloverfield Lane.
   Edit: The Hellraiser duology.
   Edit: Rosemary’s Baby.
   Edit: Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow.
Edit: The Cabin in the Woods.
   Edit: The Sixth Sense.
   Edit: Train to Busan.
   Edit: Kwaidan.
Edit: The Host by Bong Joon-ho (yes, the same director for Snowpiercer and Parasite).
   Edit: It Follows.
Edit: The IT duology, based on Stephen King’s novel.
   Edit: The Others.
   Edit: The Innocents (1961).
   Edit: Videodrome.
Edit: Event Horizon really sorry that I didn’t include this film early on).
Edit: David Cronenberg’s The Fly (again, sorry for initially not including this).
Edit: Pitch Black, (the first and better The Chronicles of Riddick film, if you’re asking; also, in video game terms, you might want to play the TCoR games Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena).
Edit: The very first Predator (also Predator 2 if you want to continue; Predators even).
Edit: An American Werewolf in London.
Edit: A Tale of Two Sisters.
For some lighthearted scares and/or some fun (in case you can’t handle the fear factors), there are also:
Frank Oz’s Little Shop of Horrors (OG cut AND Director’s Cut will do).
Shaun of the Dead (here’s hoping Last Night in Soho becomes a part of this list in the future).
   Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
The very first Scary Movie; your sequel mileage might vary.
Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride (also Frankenweenie, although it’s up to you on whether or not you’re going to watch the short film version or the longer film.
   Gremlins.
The Addams Family and The Addams Family Values
   Edit: Zombieland.
   Edit: Hocus Pocus (1993)
Edit: Disney Pixar’s Monsters Inc. and Monsters University; also, Coco.
   Edit: The Book of Life.
Edit: Ghostbusters (1984; also Ghostbusters II, if you’re into it; oh, and then there’s the 2009 game, if you’re a gamer yourself).
Edit: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975).
Edit: The Mummy (1999; also The Mummy Returns, if you enjoy that, and then there’s the classic one from 1932).
   Edit: The very first Tremors.
   Edit: Young Frankenstein.
Edit: What We Do in the Shadows (also, the TV series).
Edit: Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.
And remember, the scariest thing about horror movies, apart from really good scary movies, is terrible horror movie sequels, especially ones which are really unnecessary. However, do take notes that these are just my personal recommendations, so they may not be up to your taste, all while I might have missed some gems (and also directors). Also, forgive me if this was a very long list of recommendations.
