Frank Maddox meets crossover character of your choice!
(pretend the timelines work for this one! We can workshop it *handwaves*)
Frank Maddox/Edmund Pevensie and a magical apple tree.
Frank had always thought the apple tree in their garden was rather jolly - it had grown so quickly from an apple that had fallen from their neighbour's garden, and now looked positively ancient even though it was only a few years old. He felt he could believe in fairy-tales again sitting there, listening to the boughs creak though there seemed no wind to stir them. One year it seemed to die entirely; it seemed frozen stiff and didn't bud that spring. Mother would wonder now and again if they should cut it down because it seemed unsafe - especially after their neighbour's tree blew down one stormy winter - but they neither of them could give up the sweet little apples that came in the autumn.
He had Michelet open in his lap when the apple fell on it, narrowly missing Frank's nose. He laughed and picked it up, holding it to his face and breathing in its fragrance. The sweetness made him feel alive in a strange way; he wanted to run and jump or...
His mind danced over the other things he wanted.
Instead, he ate the apple. And then closing his eyes against the low autumn sun, he let his mind wander.
He often thought, while sitting here, of a boy-king. Or rather a king who began as a boy and grew to a man. He'd thought he was remembering a legend at first, but he'd never found it in a book. He should write it down really: the boy, the betrayal, the redemption, the coronation, but he couldn't ever quite pin down the story in the way he could pin down a butterfly.
He drifted. With the taste of the apple still fresh in his mouth he felt he almost walked alongside King Edmund as he strolled in his own Palace orchard. The King was alone - he was often alone.
"You're older than last time," Frank said to himself.
"And so are you," King Edmund replied, making Frank start. He was looking directly at Frank, and was so close that Frank could see the freckles on his nose. "Where hast been? I wish I knew when you'd likely appear."
"At Cambridge," Frank said, stupidly.
The King looked curious for a moment, as though straining to hear far away music.
"I know it, I think," he said after a moment. "But I do not remember."
He reached for Frank's hand, and Frank let him take it. It felt entirely real - warm and strong.
"Truly thou art almost here this time," Edmund said. "But not fully."
Frank didn't speak. Edmund put his other hand against Frank's cheek.
"Thou are for me, I think," he said. "But not yet. Thou art tied to another."
Frank blinked, his eyelashes brushing against the edge of the King's finger.
"Coming untied rather jolly quickly," he said softly.
"Jolly good," Edmund said, sounding almost like an English schoolboy. He looked surprised at himself for saying it too, and began to laugh.
Frank laughed too, and was still smiling when he opened his eyes again under his own apple tree.

The Life of Alcibiades
I always love this bit from David of Kings where Frank Maddox is musing on archaeology......
Tumblr media
It definitely feels like a self-insert, and when I read EF Benson's Life of Alcibiades, it was rather like having Frank over to tea to explain all about ancient Athens to me. It's a cracking good story, very well told, and Fred's barely concealed crush on the man himself is delightful.
I have previously gone on about this book and its relevance to Mary Renault's works on my other blog but for Benson fans looking for an interesting read, I highly recommend it......

Hello there! I am 'asking for a friend' here, as I have just set up a new EF Benson sideblog and having seen your pinned post I feel sure you must have read David Blaize? And if so I would love to hear your thoughts on the book!
Yes, you’re correct in guessing that I have! I’ve got some thoughts over on DW as well, though they’re about two years old now, so take that for what it’s worth!
DB was my first school novel and made me fall in love with the genre. It’s just such a good story above everything else. David and friends are so genuinely fun, and their hijinks are entertaining, and their dramas are affecting. I love how Benson writes people. He’s fantastic at observation, which makes his characters well-rounded. Nothing but good things to say about the two David books as reading experiences (discounting David and the Blue Door, which I skipped).
But the thing which keeps DB compelling to me years on is Frank Maddox. David is fun, but Frank makes me feel things. Oh, god, Frank’s monologue of self-recrimination after he attempts to kiss David and is turned down… ! I adore all of his agonizing during the beach holiday, too. And Frank’s story is what makes me such a fan of David of King’s, though I know a lot of fans don’t particularly enjoy that book. I just, mm, I love this morose, brilliant, talented, repressed, academic soul.
I didn’t come out of the books shipping the obvious choice of Frank/David. I’ve generally preferred Frank with other characters, and have written Frank/Hughes myself. I’m also interested in the idea of Frank in a crossover ship or with an original character. I know I’m not alone in this take. I struggle to see David as being happy in an explicitly sexual and romantic partnership of the sort that Frank clearly wants, and so I can’t reconcile long-term David/Frank as being both happy and appropriate for their characters. I have a lot of fondness for David and for their friendship, still. But I am not interested in fannish stories about David, as I think the books provide what I want for him.
So cool to hear about your new sideblog! I will keep an eye out for your posts on the series. :)

Eustace Miles - Frank Maddox - EF Benson
Some people say that Frank Maddox was based on EF Benson's friend Eustace Miles - they wrote some books together. This preface to 'Daily Diversions', basically a book about how to incorporate more activity into your busy life (how modern is that 100 years on!) is so adorable I nearly died:

Tumblr media
April 4, 2024
Maddox and Trevor were sitting out on their balcony on the outside couch enjoying one of the first days of warm weather.
Trevor was sitting between Maddox’s leg resting his back on Maddox’s chest.
Trevor was mindlessly tracing letters and shapes on his boyfriend’s leg, when he thought of something.
“Babe?” Trevor asked making Maddox hum, “Did you have any serious relationships the last few years?”
Trevor has been wondering this for a little while now, he not was worried because it’s in the past but more because they stopped being best friends for a few years so he didn’t get the chance to know much about Maddox’s life.
“Not a relationship nope.” Maddox shook his head pressing a kiss to Trevor’s cheek, “I did hook up with a few people and i had a friends with benefits with a teammate on the lighting.” Maddox knew in the last few years a relationship with anyone that wasn’t Trevor wouldn’t work.
“A friends with benefits?” Trevor turned around looking very curious as he straddled Maddox making Maddox wrap his arms around his waist.
“He came out to me when he was drunk and i told him i was bisexual back, he asked if we could hook up making it easier as we both weren’t out and lived in the same apartment building and was roommates on the road.” Maddox didn’t mind the arraignment because it did truthfully make it easier to hook up.
“What happened?” Trevor titled his head curiously, he was slightly jealous for the fact someone got to have Maddox when he couldn’t but he knows Maddox chose him so there is nothing to worry about.
“I got traded and i ended it.” Maddox nodded, gently rubbing circles on Trevor’s hip bone, “I guess he started wanting more but i didn’t feel anything for him and it wouldn’t be fair because i was and am in love with you.” Maddox softly smiled making Trevor bean and gently kiss Maddox real quick.
“He got angry that i didn’t want more than the arraignment and try’s to get my attention because apparently he’s in love with me.” Maddox rolled his eyes as he talked about it, any part of him that was once fond of someone he once called a friend and teamate was gone after he kept trying to get Maddox’s attention.
“Who is it?” Trevor pressed a kiss to Maddox’s cheek.
“Ross Colton.” Maddox mumbled rubbing his nose against Trevor’s cheek.
Trevor slowly nodded as he remembered all the photos and videos from Tampa of the two.
“You have nothing to be worried about baby. I never had any romantics feelings. And if i for some reason did they would be gone after he smashed my baby brother into the boards for my attention.” Maddox softly reassured Trevor wanting to make sure Trevor knows he’s it for Maddox and no one else.
“Oh he’s the one who hit Lukey in that game.” Trevor slowly nodded realizing exactly what game Maddox was talking about.
“He is.” Maddox nodded before smirking, “Now let’s stop talking about him.” Maddox pressed a kiss to Trevor’s neck and stood up holding Trevor by his thighs making Trevor sequel with laughter and hold onto Maddox tighter.
Maddox kissed Trevor as he walked them through their apartment and into their bedroom.

Headcanons I've been cooking;
-the paradise theater doing a mystery science theater 3000 bit most days (I'm like 90% sure that its basically the equivalent in their multiverse anyway, oops)
-frank and clementine still tries to keep contact and make visits if even possible anymore. June likes to receive letters and postcards as a loose penpal relationship as proof of their "mad lib situation"
-I feel robbed that June and Ava didn't interact much, they'd have so much fun and nobody would be able to handle these bar buds. Never mind theres probably a reason why these two aren't allowed in a bar together, but I love their raw chaos and hijinks would definitely go on
-Gloria makes the storage closet her room at first but when Caspar gets back, he gives her the main office since she's da b0ss now, she still spends a lot of time camping with her bts wolves making stew for them, its her own therapy
-Leif putting together a game console for the gang when theyre bored, Caspar is the best at retro games surprisingly aside from the fact hes been asking for a pinball machine forever, everyone cracks old man jokes. Mostly David and Ava, his biggest hecklers <3
-eventually they begin to cultivate a small arcade, leif fixes up a few machines for the diner (its free) kids across the cosmos go 'you mean you have to play the game with your hands?? Its like a baby's toy :/" caspar is flabbergasted, Leif just shrugs and goes "i warned you bro" and does more Leif shit
-David plays cod on their designated staff console in the office space in their down time between shifts. Feet kicked up and the lazy fan blowing, do you see my vision? this is the most important highlight so far
-David used to stream sometimes on earth in LA for funsies now and then during lockdown when he wasnt up for running out at night vandalizing the blank canvas known as the streets
-he still talks to his mom and plays catch up even from space despite the time it takes to send messages. David continues to find her drunk calls entertaining (canon anyway) Caspar doesn't really drink alcohol and is worried about the loss of control, I think hes just anxious and insecure about it.
*I don't really think caspar was much of a dick when he drank raising david, he probably was a rambling annoying dad with a shitty attitude that was hard to tolerate. like, okay, old man, we get it the world sucksss stop being so sad and let's play legos and not roleplay the state of the economic decline about it (shh, I'm not projecting gay son and drunk well meaning dad dynamics)
-Ava peer pressures Caspar *only* for celebrations anyway
-micheladas for everyone the next day, some sweet hair of the dog when the various drank theyre able to get their hands on is too much to cope with the next day if they still even have moonshine to spare left
-Leif stocks up on so much fucking hash whilst in Pasadena (as one does stuck in shitty corners of California for hangovers, generalized depression, and dread. hence all the alcohol mentions I'm not promoting alcoholic diner dwellers I swear-) which tbh parallels the way Ava stocks up nicotine from ye old moonshiner imo
Idk I have more I might add and tack on later I love these doofuses

This excerpt from "The Poisoned Bowl: Sex and the Public School" on British public school "legends" reminds me so much of Ralph Lanyon (and Frank Maddox, who is name-dropped as a fictional example):
"It may seem a mathematical absurdity which defies the laws of proportionality, but almost without exception each boarding school, whether it was large or small, produced every year exactly one boy of exceptional magnetism who became a legend. This hero was not, like many others, merely the jealously-guarded secret desire of one or two boys but rather a cult figure whom almost all boys adored. He was invariably of exceptional good looks and an outstanding sportsman. Sometimes he was also academically brilliant. More often he was academically average, but of greater import was his charm, his charisma, and his apparent indifference to success; a convincing combination of character traits that could win over even the most cynical of minds. ... The school hero had to be a great all-rounder and could never be seen to try too hard. He had to be the casual collector of trophies, someone who played any sport with a refrained but skilful grace....Most boys were glad just to have the privilege of observing such a legendary figure from a distance. Invariably his presence on a school team drew a crowd of onlookers more interested in the hero's performance than the outcome of the match. But despite being the focus of such enthusiastic attention the king of heroes always retained that essential composure that distinguished him from lesser gods. ... While it might sometimes be dangerous for a boy to confess a crush on some relatively obscure senior, or worse still junior, the hero worship of a school legend was something which was always shared. It was the one instance when school boy adulation invariably took on a public, almost ritualistic form."

Dear diary,
Got the okay from Captain Avery and The Mariner to head south to The Commonwealth coming up soon. I was going to go help push the trappers back, which I will, but I'm heading out sooner than I planned. They asked me to check for some supplies, usual stuff, and then about something else.
Apparently, those Brotherhood of Steel boys are making a push up north. I'm just supposed to check and report back. I'll be frank: from my few interactions with the Brotherhood, I don't like them. Stuck-up bunch of dinks, they are.
Those chromed-out power armor suits are pretty cool, though.

Riley McDermott, South Carolina inmate 367945, born 1990, incarceration intake in 2016, at age 26; scheduled for release February 2030
Felony DUI resulting in Death
A former police officer, charged with lying, could have derailed or at least seriously hurt the prosecution of a man charged with killing three young people in a DUI wreck, but instead, Riley McDermott decided not to try to take advantage of that situation and pleaded guilty in an Anderson County courtroom in 2016.
As part of a plea deal, McDermott pleaded guilty to three counts of felony DUI with a death and two counts of felony DUI with great bodily injury, but an additional charge of felony DUI with a great bodily injury was dropped.
McDermott, 26, has insisted since the beginning that he would not try to have bond hearings or move to have critical evidence thrown out, even if that meant skipping a chance to shorten what became an 18-year prison sentence, his attorney Druanne White said.
McDermott was driving drunk, shortly after midnight on Nov. 8, 2014, when his pickup truck — going 73 in a 35 zone — crossed the centerline and plowed into another car, said assistant 10th Judicial Circuit Solicitor Lauren Price.
The wreck killed 22-year-old Corey Austin Simmonds, 17-year-old Amber Hope Perkins and 20-year-old Jessica Ann Roberts.
The wreck happened at Boulevard and Williamston Road, near a residence hall at Anderson University where McDermott was an assistant baseball coach.
The cars collided with the force of a bomb blast, said attorney Steve Krause, who represents Perkins’ younger sister, Cheyenne Perkins, who was 11 at the time of the wreck.
Cheyenne was trapped in the car, counted by officials as a fourth fatality until Deputy Anderson County Coroner Don McCown felt a faint sign of life. Also a trained paramedic, McCown gave Cheyenne Perkins an emergency tracheotomy in the back of the car and is credited with saving her life.
Circuit Court Judge Cordell Maddox said it is highly unusual for people accused of crimes to meet with their victims before the case is resolved.
"That’s a first for me in 15 years on the bench," Maddox said.
McDermott’s mom, Laurie, told the judge she knows about a lifetime of kindness her son has given to neighborhood children, elderly family members, classmates and to her when she had cancer.
“I know he would do anything in his power to undo that night,” she said.
McDermott’s best friend, his pastor and his former girlfriend also spoke to his compassion and love for others. His head coach at Anderson University, Jim Miller, said he had charged McDermott with recruiting not for talent, which anyone could do, but to recruit for character.
There was little doubt, family members of several of the victims said in court, that McDermott was, until that night, a good kid.
But so too were the people he killed, they said.
Hanging over the hearing like an elephant, Maddox said, were the actions of an Anderson Police Department officer, who was not named in court but was identified based on the charges mentioned by prosecutor, the judge and other attorneys for family members.
The officer, Gene Frank, was charged earlier this month with misconduct in office related to his work on the case and was fired from the Clemson Police Department, where he had been working after leaving the Anderson Police Department.
Frank is accused of telling his supervisors and prosecutors that he had tried to get a judge to get a warrant for McDermott’s blood after the wreck, according to prosecutors. Phone records showed he did not call the judge and instead made a decision to authorize the blood withdrawal at AnMed Health Medical Center citing exigent circumstances, Price said.
Maddox said he felt compelled to make the unusual step of commending the police department, in the court record, for being honest after discovering what happened.
“It needs to be said on the record that your department has acted in the way we all want police departments to act,” Maddox said. “You didn’t give up and stop, you didn’t hide any facts once this case went off the tracks.”
The judge said if McDermott had tried to get evidence withheld, Price would have been scrambling at a trial, which wouldn’t have happened for years, to get a conviction.
He told McDermott that his life could still be worthwhile if he were to try to stop others from driving drunk.
McDermott was given a chance to speak to the victims.
He turned away from the judge, toward the crowd.
“From the bottom of my heart I’m sorry,” he said. “The good thing about being in jail is I don’t have a mirror so I don’t have to look at myself in the face.”
While several family members had expressed forgiveness or wished peace on McDermott, Charlie Harris said he wanted a longer sentence.
Harris is raising his two-year-old granddaughter since his daughter Jessica Roberts’ death.
After the sentencing he said there aren’t enough laws to protect victims of DUI fatalities.
“He still gets to see his family,” Harris said. “His family can see him, can hug him when he’s out. I can’t see Jessica, and my granddaughter won’t know her mother.”

May 23, 2024
Maddox laughed shaking his head at they walked into their hotel and Lukas was carrying Connor on his back and Alex pushing the two around, Maddox stood behind Lukas incase Connor is dropped and he does not want any of them injured.
Maddox opened the elevator for them all as they had just got back from spending the day catching up and walking around Prague and shopping around.
Connor having been playing in a different location than the rest of the boys for the first round of the tournament and Lukas being on his national team and Maddox and Alex being together. They did not have a lot of time to catch up and were use to spending most of their time together from the last season.
“Alright put him down.” Maddox chuckled watching as Lukas pretended to drop Connor and Connor gripped onto Lukas tighter laughing loudly.
Maddox was always glad that Connor felt comfortable around them to relax and be him self around them all.
“Yes Cap!” Lukas playfully saluted Maddox and gently put Connor down. Connor giggled slighty as he was set down and reluctantly let go of Lukas
Maddox fondly rolled his eyes as the elevator opened up to his floor, “Alright i’ll see you guys in the morning.” Maddox ruffled Connor and Lukas’s hair and waved at Connor and Lukas as he walked out with Alex following him.
Maddox, Alex, Connor and Lukas all having breakfast together in the morning with Trevor and Seth joining as well, making it a Blackhawks breakfast.
Maddox softly smiled seeing how close Connor and Lukas were standing to each other before walking away from the elevator.
Alex fist bumped Maddox, “See you tomorrow Mads.” Alex smiled lopsided at his best friend as they walked down the hallway of the hotel
“Night Lex.” Maddox said back and opened up his hotel room and dropped his shopping bags on the desk and slipped his shoes off and took his phone out of his pocket and smiled at the locker screen a picture of Trevor and Maddox hugging each other tightly on the ice after Trevor’s first goal as a Blackhawk.
Maddox stripped out of his clothes and hopped into the shower letting out a sigh of relief feeling the cold water hit him.
Maddox has never like the heat and tends to get overheated easily and needs either cold water or air conditioning.
Maddox took a pretty long shower just relaxing in the shower before he reluctantly got out and wrapped a towel around his waist walking out of the bathroom and heading to Trevor’s bag and grabbing a pair of his sweat shorts and threw them on not birthing to grab a shirt.
Maddox ruffled the towel over his wet hair before hanging it back up in the bathroom and grabbed his phone and flopped onto his bed.
Maddox was only on his phone for a few minutes before he heard the door unlocking and it opening revealing Trevor walking in, Maddox immediately noticed the rosy color on Trevor’s cheeks and silly smile he gets when he drinks especially wine.
“BABY!!!” Trevor loudly exclaimed giggling as he dropped his bags and hurried over and flopped onto his boyfriend.
Maddox grunted slighty as Trevor’s elbows dug into his hips but wrapped his arms around Trevor letting him lay on top of him.
“Hi my pretty boy.” Maddox softly mumbled brushing Trevor’s hair as he looked up at Maddox with a silly smile.
“I missed you.” Trevor pouted, he’s been spoiled of spending almost the whole day every day with Maddox since he got to Chicago that it’s been weird when he isn’t with Maddox.
“I missed you too.” Maddox leaned down softly kissed Trevor and Trevor happily hummed kissing him back before abruptly pulling away.
“What is this.” Trevor demanded glaring at Maddox as he sat up crossing his arms, he looked like a toddler throwing a tantrum.
“What?” Maddox looked extremely confused and tried not to frown as his kiss was interrupted.
“Your hair.” Trevor whined dramatically pouting, “You showered without me!” Trevor exclaimed looking extremely betrayed.
Maddox tried not to laugh but he snickered slightly seeing Trevor so upset that he shower with out him.
Trevor absolutely loves showering with Maddox and now hates showering when it’s not with Maddox and is always trying to drag Maddox into the shower with him.
“I am sorry baby, i promise next time you’ll join me.” Maddox softly apologized and held out his hand towards Trevor.
Trevor still pouted but took Maddox’s hand never one to turn now Maddox affection, “You better.” Trevor flopped back down on to Maddox dramatically snd snuggled his head against Maddox’s bare chest.
“I promise.” Maddox let out a very fond laugh as he kissed the top of his boyfriend’s head. Maddox became more and more fond of Trevor’s dramatics every day.
“Did you have a good time?” Maddox asked softly as he helped Trevor kick off his shoes despite Trevor not getting up at all. Maddox just fondly rolled his eyes something he seems to always been doing because of Trevor specifically.
Trevor did spam Maddox photos and videos through out the whole day making Cole even more suspicious of the two but Maddox and Trevor talked about it already so Trevor told Cole they were dating but to keep a secret until they go back to Michigan to tell Maddox’s family, more specifically Jack.
Maddox also knew Luke was also getting suspicious of his relationship with Trevor now but Maddox knew Luke is patient enough to wait to say anything until Maddox brings it up.
“It was fun with Coley.” Trevor softly mumbled tired from the long day and very tipsy from all wine he drank.
“I’m glad.” Maddox gently rubbed Trevor’s back feeling him relax more and more, “Go to sleep baby.”
“I love you.” Trevor quietly mumbled to Maddox as he slowly closed his eyes and began falling asleep in Maddox’s arms.
“I love you too.” Maddox smiled lovingly back and pressed a kiss to sleepy Trevor’s forehead.
