Story: 4.5/5 - Its handling of mental abuse is shockingly realistic and harrowing. And, though its mystery isn't particularly difficult to figure out, the tension it invokes is thick.

Performances: 4.5/5 - Walbrook is incredible as Paul, so believable in how he portrays an abuser who flips from doting to cruel that it's often hard to watch. Wynyard is similarly great as the fraying Bella.

Cinematography: 4/5 - Good use of layering to create disorienting shots.

Felony DUI resulting in Death

A former police officer, charged with lying, could have derailed or at least seriously hurt the prosecution of a man charged with killing three young people in a DUI wreck, but instead, Riley McDermott decided not to try to take advantage of that situation and pleaded guilty in an Anderson County courtroom in 2016.

As part of a plea deal, McDermott pleaded guilty to three counts of felony DUI with a death and two counts of felony DUI with great bodily injury, but an additional charge of felony DUI with a great bodily injury was dropped.

McDermott, 26, has insisted since the beginning that he would not try to have bond hearings or move to have critical evidence thrown out, even if that meant skipping a chance to shorten what became an 18-year prison sentence, his attorney Druanne White said.

McDermott was driving drunk, shortly after midnight on Nov. 8, 2014, when his pickup truck — going 73 in a 35 zone — crossed the centerline and plowed into another car, said assistant 10th Judicial Circuit Solicitor Lauren Price.

The wreck killed 22-year-old Corey Austin Simmonds, 17-year-old Amber Hope Perkins and 20-year-old Jessica Ann Roberts.

The wreck happened at Boulevard and Williamston Road, near a residence hall at Anderson University where McDermott was an assistant baseball coach.

The cars collided with the force of a bomb blast, said attorney Steve Krause, who represents Perkins’ younger sister, Cheyenne Perkins, who was 11 at the time of the wreck.

Cheyenne was trapped in the car, counted by officials as a fourth fatality until Deputy Anderson County Coroner Don McCown felt a faint sign of life. Also a trained paramedic, McCown gave Cheyenne Perkins an emergency tracheotomy in the back of the car and is credited with saving her life.

Circuit Court Judge Cordell Maddox said it is highly unusual for people accused of crimes to meet with their victims before the case is resolved.

"That’s a first for me in 15 years on the bench," Maddox said.

McDermott’s mom, Laurie, told the judge she knows about a lifetime of kindness her son has given to neighborhood children, elderly family members, classmates and to her when she had cancer.

“I know he would do anything in his power to undo that night,” she said.

McDermott’s best friend, his pastor and his former girlfriend also spoke to his compassion and love for others. His head coach at Anderson University, Jim Miller, said he had charged McDermott with recruiting not for talent, which anyone could do, but to recruit for character.

There was little doubt, family members of several of the victims said in court, that McDermott was, until that night, a good kid.

But so too were the people he killed, they said.

Hanging over the hearing like an elephant, Maddox said, were the actions of an Anderson Police Department officer, who was not named in court but was identified based on the charges mentioned by prosecutor, the judge and other attorneys for family members.

The officer, Gene Frank, was charged earlier this month with misconduct in office related to his work on the case and was fired from the Clemson Police Department, where he had been working after leaving the Anderson Police Department.

Frank is accused of telling his supervisors and prosecutors that he had tried to get a judge to get a warrant for McDermott’s blood after the wreck, according to prosecutors. Phone records showed he did not call the judge and instead made a decision to authorize the blood withdrawal at AnMed Health Medical Center citing exigent circumstances, Price said.

Maddox said he felt compelled to make the unusual step of commending the police department, in the court record, for being honest after discovering what happened.

“It needs to be said on the record that your department has acted in the way we all want police departments to act,” Maddox said. “You didn’t give up and stop, you didn’t hide any facts once this case went off the tracks.”

The judge said if McDermott had tried to get evidence withheld, Price would have been scrambling at a trial, which wouldn’t have happened for years, to get a conviction.

He told McDermott that his life could still be worthwhile if he were to try to stop others from driving drunk.

McDermott was given a chance to speak to the victims.

He turned away from the judge, toward the crowd.

“From the bottom of my heart I’m sorry,” he said. “The good thing about being in jail is I don’t have a mirror so I don’t have to look at myself in the face.”

While several family members had expressed forgiveness or wished peace on McDermott, Charlie Harris said he wanted a longer sentence.

Harris is raising his two-year-old granddaughter since his daughter Jessica Roberts’ death.

After the sentencing he said there aren’t enough laws to protect victims of DUI fatalities.

“He still gets to see his family,” Harris said. “His family can see him, can hug him when he’s out. I can’t see Jessica, and my granddaughter won’t know her mother.”

As the Walker family is forced out of their home and Bonham is stuck in jail without bail, Geri tries her best to keep everyone's spirits up. In the meantime, Cassie and Cordell do their first real investigation together as they try to find proof of Bonham's innocence. Just as it seems they've hit a dead-end, a formerly hostile rancher decides to come clean with the truth: that Frank Broussard (Geri's adoptive father) was actually the man involved with Marv's death. And also that Geri is the missing Davidson baby. Even with all the heavy news, this episode ends on a high note as Bonham is released and the family can start looking for a new home together.

One of the more famous crimes of MGM was its attempt to destroy the negative and all existing prints of Thorold Dickinson's 1940 version of Gaslight in order to avoid any comparisons between it and the 1944 remake directed by George Cukor. It failed somehow, and the two versions can now be seen back to back. The 1944 film is superb entertainment, winning an Oscar for Ingrid Bergman and showcasing Charles Boyer to very good effect. By its side, Dickinson's version can feel a little undernourished -- or is it just that the later version is overfed, fattened up by Hollywood largesse? I feel very kindly toward the earlier film, which doesn't attempt to disguise the fact that it's sheer melodrama with backstories that try to add psychological realism. All we really need to do is accept the film's Victorian subtext and to know is that Paul Mallen (Anton Walbrook) is a foreigner and that his wife, Bella (Diana Wynyard), grew up breathing the pure air of the English countryside to see whose side the film is on. Just the way the Viennese-born Walbrook smooths his mustache is enough to let us know he's a rotter. And was anyone more born to play the gaslighted victim than Wynyard who, with her slight strabismus and her habit of staring into the distance, seems to be seeing things that no one else can? The 84-minute run time sets everything up efficiently and moves steadily through some truly suspenseful moments to its tables-turned conclusion. The 1944 remake runs half an hour longer and while its performances may be more elaborate (and in the case of the teenage Angela Lansbury's conniving maid, superior), Dickinson's  version keeps us nicely tantalized. The casting of Robert Newton as Bella's cousin is amusing, considering that Newton would go on to make his name as an actor with the terrifying Bill Sikes in David Lean's Oliver Twist (1948). Those of us who saw that film first may suspect that he's up to no good in Gaslight, but we'd be wrong.

Los viejos VHS con su estuche plástico de películas de terror, en esos estantes como laberintos de un local de barrio. Mirabas la tapa y recordabas el avance que habías visto hace unos meses en otro alquiler. Me lo llevo te pensabas de inmediato. 

Recordando esos buenos momentos de videoclub, me tropiezo un día con el trailer de Maniac cop. Esos avances con intriga y la voz en off que me apabulla los oídos hicieron que quisiera ver de nuevo la película de William Lustig. Un asesino de policías vestido de policía que usa un bastón con cuchilla. Rememora su muerte buscando sed de venganza por las calles neoyorkinas. Parecería una trama de clase B pero lo distinto a otras pelis del género es que trata de un asesino policial que busca a todo aquel que lleve una placa. La  búsqueda de justicia por parte del maniático policía, tiene un cómplice que es su novia del pasado quien lo acompaña en su camino de muerte.

 La historia de Maniac cop tiene zonas interesantes porque vamos conociendo la vida del ex policía Matt Cordell a través del detective Frank McRae, el detective con un pasado tormentoso que va descubriendo las pistas que están bastante sobre la mesa. 

Algo que me pareció  para destacar de la cinta es la paleta de colores que se usa en los asesinatos nocturnos. Es como un azul metalizado que atraviesa la noche en cada una de las apariciones del asesino en las calles de Nueva York de los ‘80. La noche me gustó como está trabajado, así como se esconde el rostro de Maniac Cop hasta las escenas finales. 

En cuanto al trabajo actoral me pareció que linda con el estilo de película de terror que maneja cierto estilo de humor. Siendo esto así el humor está lejos de clásicos como Pesadilla. Tal vez la actuación del alcalde de la ciudad puede ser que es quien mantiene ese código cómico sumamente exagerado dónde dice todo lo que le pasa. Justamente dije “todo lo que le pasa”, y no puedo no mencionar que los personajes están por momentos en un lugar de roles que no pueden dejar de obedecer. Entiendo que es parte del género pero les juega en contra. El detective McrRae no sale nunca de su posición de “todo lo averiguo y estoy en lo cierto”,  y la novia del protagonista la oficial Forrest tiene un lugar de mujer policía que viste como una mujer de la noche que está sublevada en todo momento por los hombres. Cuando los personajes  intentan tomar una decisión ante el deseo, no lo pueden hacer porque su rol no lo permite. La actuación de Bruce Campbell en las críticas que he leído se quedan en algunos casos con ciertos rasgos de humor del actor que viene de su trabajo en Evil dead, en cambio en este trabajo queda a mitad de camino. Por ejemplo, en las escenas que el policía Forrest trata de tranquilizar a su mujer que está perseguida porque el asesino es un policía, Campbell está continuamente asombrado sin saber qué hacer. Quiero decir que el personaje de Forrest no toma hasta el final de la película las riendas del conflicto. Los personajes en algunos pasajes están en el grotesco de las situaciones que viven. Forrest cuando es descubierto que engaña a su esposa prácticamente no se sorprende y luego que esta es asesinada, el policía de la noche a la mañana supera la muerte de la mujer. Al siguiente mantiene su noviazgo con su compañera de trabajo como si nada. Este tipo de acontecimientos abundan en la cinta. Los buenos momentos como dije están en las apariciones de Cordell que va arremetiendo con todo lo que se le interpone en su camino. 

También es interesante la mirada de Cohen que tiene sobre las fuerzas policiales porque la película hace una crítica al accionar de la policía corrupta de aquellos años en EEUU. Eso es un acierto, y que sea un policía asesino lo vuelve interesante. Pero ojo, que no es más que eso. No se ahonda mucho más sobre los caminos erróneos de los policías y quién mató a Cordell. Hubiese sido atractivo como entre medio de asesinatos a cuchillos se devela toda la mafia policial, pero como dije queda en una intención floja. 

Me queda entre nubarrones las escenas filmadas con alcalde, ¿por qué está en otro formato de calidad? Me confundía. Pensé que era un flashback pero no es así. ¿Habrá sido por una cuestión de presupuesto? 

En Maniac Cop las me parecieron a lo conocido, querido diario, pero aún así es divertida para pasar el rato.
