WIP of some of the gang.
BTW: for anyone interested in this Taleblr rewrite, it’s called The Adventures of Ash Hunter (don’t look anything up yet we just now starting posting stuff about it). We’re debating about posting it solely in that tag or also posting it to the taleblr tag as well. Thoughts?

what are.... your headcannons for Epsilon and his people?? Ad Francis too??
oooooh! OOOOOOH! FINALLY!!! MY THEORIES!!! IVE BEEN DYING TO SHARE MY THEORIES!!!
loooooooooong post lmao. Heads up-
Okay okay okay, so I had a few questions about these people when I first started watching the show a gazillion years ago; like how many more of The People are there? How do their numbers work? Are they all clones, or just the Epsilons? How do they do what they do in their universe? Who the fuck do they work for? And why are things the way they are?
I have more questions than answers, but I will say that brainstorming about it has been so much fun~ So lemme just break this down as best as I can-
I personally headcannon that only the Epsilons are cloned from each other, every other agent is someone they either recruited through traditional means, taken from childhood or from birth, or cajoled into service as a form of punishment. We all know how easy it would be to pluck a few promising young birds from some orphanage somewhere; unnoticeable, unwanted, and untraceable to the masses, an organization like The People would jump on the opportunity, I think.
Okay, now for my individual agents, I have only a few things I've actually put to pen about them. Don't you just love having blank slate character to project all of your bullshit onto? I do!
Firstly, I have Irene which i'll be real, she's my fave Green Man to draw. She's.... so pretty... To me....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her stoicism is linked directly to her environment. When she's on the clock, she one of the most precise, cunning, cutthroat agents around. But the split second she has the okay to relax, she's relaxed.
Her detail is a saboteur, so she is the one disarming traps, disabling security systems and breaking shit up so she and her People can get their jobs done. That being said, she likes to tinker, and can make even the nastiest, most beaten up and abandoned forest can come back to life-
She is insightful, observant and sometimes even playful. She just hides it under a perpetual frown. I was also thinking she would have some affectionate feelings toward Francis, as she's known him all his life , and adored Simone. I imagine Irene and Francis are kind of like siblings with a huge age gap.
Tumblr media
Next up, my man Io, a former Hunter who since kicks it with The People after an incident in the 90's. He, along with Epsilon and Simone worked with the Secret Scientists to create a vaccine against lycanthropy. He's been an invaluable asset to The People ever since.
Io has special knowledge on medicine and even alchemy, occasionally making passing remarks about an old colleague that could turn wood chips to gold shavings. He also has a vast knowledge in matters of supernatural sicknesses and possessions. He has a bit of a morbid fascination with it, even going as far as to try and give himself pestilences only for the sake of further research.
I think he'd be pretty neutral about Francis, seeing as how it's not ease accepting some kid to be your new boss. At the same time, he knows where he is, so Io does what he can to keep their relationship strictly professional. However, in light of... recent events, he may be spending more one on one time with his fellow agents; more so than he's used to. We might learn more about him later...
Tumblr media
And now WOOOOOOO, GRANDPAAA!!! LETS GOOOOOO!!!!! No, but for real, Agent Rohan is the oldest agent here, pushing 65, and he's still out here taking orders from Epsilon and making moves with The People, all the while fighting vampires, befriending warewolves, tricking the fae and dealing with alien incursions of every sort. He's up there in "Spooky Levels of Competence" with Simone and Grandpa Max, like, this man has seen some shit.
Rohan likes hunting, fishing, shooting, and camping out in the middle or asscrack nowhere. You know, old man stuff. He's the good kind of Boomer, ya know?
And he's still just a chill Old Man who just wants to retire to a secluded cabin in the woods with his Dog (not a dog, not a dog-) and live out his sunset years like a regular American man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fuck you, I know Agent Mccabe divorced his ass (they were never married lmao) but sometimes when they're together it feels like nothing's changed. Then they look into each other's eyes and remember how they've hurt each other oh fuck-
Epsilon is an extremely reserved and extremely stifled man, so much so that he stifles everyone around him. He believes that order and routine are the ways to maintain a safe and normal lifestyle, and so many times he is proven right. So much so he allowed himself to be tricked into letting his dearest friend leave for outer space.
He is a, "By any means necessary," type of man to a fault. Ruthless, calculating, and by any sense of the word, the Perfect Agent. Nothing phases him, it seems. However, there is something there, a reason he instills instant obedience and zero hesitation, and I think we can all find that out... together....
Tumblr media
Here cooooomes the boyyy~ 💖✨✨ my boy, my baby; Francis.
Hahahaaaa, this one thing soooo highly of himself, hahahahaa~~ Ohhh, thats so cute. I love him for that. I will break him. He will know humility.
You know what happens when someone with no moral compass is thrown into the most fucked up situation? They find that compass, and they fucking use it. The boy must learn, and there wasn't enough time in the show to teach him. Now's my chance-
Speaking of, his Foolhardy Father taught him that thinking for himself was the wrong thing to do, and after Morrigan, he has to start thinking out of the box because there was never a protocol for this...
Also..... I know the fact he's a clone hurts him, like, we saw that shit in The Unblinking Eye, fuckin he hates following Epsilon's orders but what the fuck else is he gonna do? What else is there, this is what he was made for, right? He seems like the perfect guy for a character arc, and it kills me that he didn't get one.
I want him to learn to be his own person. Kinda want em all to figure out what their lives are, since they could all be butchered at any moment and only their killers would mourn them.
Speaking of Killers....
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miss Morrigan Monroe
"Whaaaaat?!?!" I heard you gawking, "Your Evil Bitch™ is with The People?!?! How???" And I'll give you the diss-
next post, this bitch is already so long. But just know, she knew the OG Epsilon and they fucking DO NOT VIBE.
She is hundreds of years old, has profound beef, and the shits on site, so sorry Epsilon. That's what you get for the sins of your father, Get fucked, I guess.
I know she's bad, but she's meant to be vapid, petty, recalcitrant, repugnant and deranged, mean and clever and scary beyond all reason- You know, the perfect woman, lmao. (I dont AT ALL condone the shit shes done or is gonna do but like, its gonna be nasty 😈😈😈😈)

Evan Kennedy, from “(The) Undernamed”
A wilderness contains no diamond. And because a diamond has been built for us, we must be distant from regions that threaten our civility. I speak about civility with a laugh, of course, but it’s good-natured. “The universe falls apart and discloses a diamond,” according to the dictation transcribed by Jack Spicer, who was not quite Francis of Assisi, though both spent their lives in despair making toys to amuse the infant Christ. Whether the voice of dictation resembled that of our home team’s radio announcer or the San Damiano cross—“Francis, rebuild my church”—is a matter of taste, such as taste in furniture. At any rate, Hunter Pence grounds into yet another double play, and we are stuck in our deference. A city could be built out from the baselines of a diamond. Far from the hospital near where I live and where Spicer died, the city’s edge meets wilderness, and my reception crackles—how’s yours. I am trying to design my solace at a point shared by different stations, but the ballpark seagulls become a menace to my anxious antenna. Most nights they circle overhead until game’s end when it is safe to ransack the leftover food, but in an inning distended past anyone’s enjoyment—a hangover’s early arrival—they settle upon the outfield. Their skepticism must be a sad sight for the rookie at bat, a spooky parody of messianic expectation. I mean we are smack-dab within a quiet, null moment of life (on earth) winding down to a supposed eternal hurrah deemed paradise.
❖ These mornings I bike within a lyrical but discreetly resonant rule where I recite a settlement among recalcitrant systems to axe the psychopomps that took the best out from us to some distant historicity. They should fear it when I am so employed. I’m recently defined as a maker of my own oxygen, haircut, and enjoyment. Today I wanted to dissolve into the Giants victory procession up Market. It’s possession of a desire to be rid of my body but also to join this party because we’ve been fledged into city living, the captivation to a melodic apokalypsis.          Don’t humiliate love by doubting these poems.          I had to tell myself that—

Song of the Smiling Knight
Andre Gilbert was a legendary figure even in life. A mountain of a man, striding across the battlefield with his head uncovered, showing a madman’s grin as he cleaved through his enemies with ease. He became a hero to his people, a source of inspiration to frightened soldiers and motivation to keep fighting.
Unfortunately even legends fall in time, struck down by another who would grow to be a legend in his own lands. The cycle continued, and for a long time there was peace for Andre’s weary soul.
Until she came.
All was calm and serene for so long, and then that voice, that… soft... sweet… voice. Andre heard the tales of witches, horrible hags cackling in the moonlight, but this voice was so kind and loving, how could he not trust it?
Then, just as suddenly the voice was gone, as was his peace, and he was alone in the field he fell in... a time long beyond any he recognized.
Was it any wonder that frayed him a bit?
A Remote Part of France
“Sooooo...” Patli’s bright voice carried across the open field well. “Can you see the future?”
Francis sighed lightly, rolling his eyes behind his dark lenses. “I can’t see anything, Patli.”
“Not even dark?”
“I don’t know what ‘dark’ is.”
“... Spooky.”
“Dare I ask why you asked?” He continued, cane bouncing off a small divot in the ground the he hopped over gracefully.
“Well, I mean… blind people are often seers. Mom says there were some priests who plucked their eyes out to see the stars better.”
“Can you see the future, then?” He retorted.
“No, but mine don’t count, I got new ones.” Patli smirked, poking the side of her head, her eyes vanishing into darkness inside her head only to be replaced with small green pinpricks of flame. “See?”
“No.” Francis answered flatly.
“Oh… right, yea… Well I can see just fine! In fact my spirit eyes let me look into the spirit world whenever I want to.”
“... Have you not been using them before just now?”
“No?”
Francis let out a low sigh at that, rubbing his head with his empty hand. “Patli we’re hunting a spirit and you didn’t think to start out using your spirit eyes?!”
There was a bit of a pause before the smaller girl gasped softly. “Ooooh! Right!”
“I was hoping at least if you were going to be constantly talking and dulling my hearing you were at least using your spirit vision…”
“Well I forgot okay?!”
“You forgot your lack of eyes?!”
“Well yea, don’t you ever forget you’re blind? It’s just normal!”
“No! I’ve literally never once forgotten I was blind!”
The pair went back and forth as they walked, Alice unable to hide her snickering as she heard them even in the distance.
“Oh gods what are they doing?” Nessa groaned, recognizing the look on Alice.
“Nothing, they just sound EXACTLY like we did when we first started training together…”
“Oh, so Francis is being a haughty little brat then...” Nessa smirked, nudging Alice lightly.
“Mhm, and Patli’s too eager to show off her cool tricks to remember her one job is to support the blind person.” Alice winked, bumping her back.
“Careful, if those two wind up together too, your fancy little French noble line is gonna get all weird and Aztec-y.”
“Oh yea, hate to imagine a world where the Roche family is weird…"
“Just saying, when our great grand nephews are holding ritual pyres to celebrate the harvest don’t blame me. You Roches are insatiable for Aztec girls it seems.”
Meanwhile, as the two older hunters flirted, Patli and Francis were currently… rolling across the field, not quite as romantic as their siblings as they wrestled and yelled at each other.
“Call me that again you fancy pants jerk!” Patli yelped as she rolled down the slope, holding onto Francis’ shirt tightly to drag him with her.
“Happily! BIRD BRAIN!” He responded, trying to wiggle out of her hold as his cane whipped around behind him, thankfully held onto his wrist by a security strap. “Bird brain!” he repeated even as their bodies hit something solid together.
“Ow!” Patli groaned, holding her head. “I think your dumb cane hit me…”
“My… your stupid flailing feet must have hit ME!” Francis grunted in discomfort as he stood, rubbing his side.
“Yea well you’ll know when my feet hit you in one sec-...” Patli started before Francis held his hand up.
“Hold up…” he said, sounding more serious as he adjusted his glasses. “Do you smell that?”
Thankfully rather than make some comment about Francis ‘fancy shampoo’ or the like, Patli recognized the shift in tone, frowning as she shook her head. “No. I mean I smell the wild flowers, the grass, the dirt… all normal field stuff.”
“There’s something else… where are we?”
Patli took the time to assess the surroundings finally, realizing how far off track they’d gotten in their fight. “Oh… shit we’re way off the path, oh man Nessa’s gonna kick my ass…”
“No, I mean is there anything near us? What’d we hit?”
“Uh it’s…a rock? A big rock… Wait this is a REALLY big rock, ONE really big rock, that’s weird isn’t it?”
The two were standing in front of a massive stone monolith. Just as Patli said it was one big stone, carved by expert hands ages ago, covered by moss and other signs of age…
“Does it have writing on it? Help me out here Patli. You need to be my eyes.”
“Right right, one sec.” Patli said, the two moved on from their fight quickly as they realized how much they need the other’s talents.
In a flash Patli was scaling the monolith, fingers not even needing holds as she seemed to fly up it, scanning for signs. “No writing... it looks like there was paint but it’s really old and faded…” She huffed. “There’s a hole at the top though, I’m checking it out.”
Francis quietly had to admit when the girl focused she was actually quite good at communicating… Right up until the cry of ‘heads up!’ A split-second later something heavy thumped against the earth in front of him.
“Damn it Patli! Again, blind! I can’t see when you’re throwing crap!”
“I said heads up!”
“Yea like a second before!” Francis huffed, crouching down to feel the object. It was small, round, and smooth. It felt cold despite obviously being in the sun in its position…
“Huh,” he mused. “Hey Patli what color is this?”
“Black. Like really shiny black, like Nessa’s knife... but it’s not obsidian, I know that.”
Francis felt the thing in his hand a bit more. She was right, obsidian is a more brittle feeling, hard to get this round without chips and cracks… "Hm...” he mused before bringing the stone to his mouth, licking it quickly.
“EW!” Patli shouted from her perch on the rock. “And you call me gross?!”
“Shut up! It’s how I can tell stuff, I’ve got a good tongue...” Francis huffed, blushing a bit, smacking his lips softly. “Huh… this is onyx…”
“The gem?” Patli asked, slowly floating down to join him. “Weird, what’s it mean?” She asked. Despite making fun of his ‘fanciness’ she knew his time in the library paid off for things like this.
“Typically means strength and absorbing negative energies… You said this is a big rock right? I think this might be marking a warrior’s grave…”
“Like The Smiling Knight?” Patli perked up.
“Could be. Nessa said he was a local legend, it’d make sense for him to be honored with a grave symbolizing strength and keeping him safe from negative magics.”
“Didn’t work well if he’s walking around now.” Patli smirked.
“Well, magic wears off. This thing’s pretty small, it may have been part of a bigger idol that got lost or stolen.” Francis offered. “Well if this is his grave the entrance is around here too, can you.”
Before he even finished it Patli was giggling, flying into the air. “Watch out!” She called, thankfully a bit better than before as she gave Francis enough time to scramble out of the way before she let out a loud shriek, enough to make the surrounding recon team cover their ears.
The shriek was effective, though, as horrific and banshee-like as it was, it was also effective at sending the moss and grass that covered the hill that the monolith sat on flying. Soon enough the barrow was revealed, a once proud hill of dirt and clay compressed into a sturdy dome that the monolith stood atop like a crown. In front of it was an old wooden door, showing signs of its ancient age but still standing proud.
“Huh, looks like it is a grave. Good tongue, fancy boy...” Patli grinned, slapping Francis’ back as he came back to join her.
“Yea yea...” he huffed. “Good death scream too, you’ve gotten better at it.” He added.
“Aw… you like me!” The girl teased, walking to the door and pushing it open as Francis sputtered a few times behind her.
“What?! I just said your death scream was better.”
“Yea, which is nicer than ‘bird brain.’” she teased as her eyes once again lit up with their flames.
“Well ‘good tongue’ is nicer than calling me a dumb fancy jerk! So what do you like me too?!”
“Maybe I d-...” Patli’s teasing grin faded quickly as she realized what she was seeing. “How many ghosts are we after, Francis?”
“Uh, one?” He answered incredulously, though grateful for the change in topic.
“There’s… more than one.”
The barrow was small inside, most of the mound’s mass being exterior, leaving just one single burial chamber where a stone sarcophagus surrounded by jars and baskets of tribute sat proudly.
There was only one sarcophagus, but far more ghosts lingering around. The Smiling Knight was there, standing in front of his burial site, surrounded by ghosts that seemed to be from all ages past.
Peasants, nobles, modern farmers, students, soldiers, there must have been almost fifty of them crammed into the tight space as the knight’s ghost held court. Nearly seven feet tall, wearing the shining armor he died in, a now rictus looking grin stretching his mouth wide as his ghostly blue form turned to stare at Patli.
“Have you brought the song?” He asked in a raspy, almost pained sounding, voice. “Have you returned my music?”
“Uh… no?” Patli said, stepping back, putting herself between the spirits and Francis before whispering back “Can that sword cut ghosts?”
“Alice said…”
“And I say, can that sword cut ghosts?” She hissed.
“The silver edge is better for it but it can be tricky still.” Francis responded as he pulled the blade out, feeling the danger around him.
“Stay by me, don’t move unless I do… there’s a LOT of ghosts and I don’t think they’re… well.”
“Where is the song?” The knight’s voice raised, the other ghosts turning to face them as he spoke loud enough for Francis to hear as well. “Are you the one who took it from me?!”
“I don’t know what song you mean, spirit...” Patli spoke, trying to speak with authority even as bits of the wall near her chipped off due to the ghost’s voice. “But I don’t take songs. I am a priestess, a warrior like you, and I’ve come to guide you to the afterlife.”
“I cannot return!” The ghost roared, Francis covering his ears as the booming voice echoed around him. “I will not return to the void, the silence! I cannot! I must have my song!”
“Shit, Patli this is too much, this tomb’s one giant bowl and his voice is…” Francis groaned, unable to focus on anything as the sound around him rocked his senses.
“Yea, come on...” Patli answered, stepping back, guiding him to the door.
“The thieves flee with the song!” The knight roared, pointing to them. “Stop them, servants of the Lady!”
The other ghosts surged forward at that, more mindless seeming than the knight, and devoted to his command as the pair stumbled back. “Damn it, okay fancy boy, change of plans. Sword up!” Patli  said over her shoulder.
“What?” Francis asked, raising his sword as she instructed.
“Focus, okay? We’ve got ghosts coming at us! You NEED to focus, we won't be getting to the door and I’m about to make your sword into a lightsaber so I REALLY don’t want you to get me with it.”
Francis was still fairly confused, but nodded, taking a deep breath as he tried to put aside the moaning and the knight’s roaring commands that muddled his senses. He felt the heat from his sword as Patli slid her palm along the blade, spreading blood across it that caused it to ignite in green flame just like Nessa used.
“Can you feel them?”
He nodded. It was hard, but he could. The heat of the sword helped, he could feel the chill of the spirits, and Patli’s body heat for contrast. He heard her breath, smelled the grave dirt scent that seemed to cling to the ghosts. It wasn’t perfect, but he could keep from decapitating his fellow hunter at least.
“Alright, good! Now we’re gonna go forward, and we’re not stopping until we hit the knight, got it?”
He nodded, taking a high stance he practiced so many times before, now finally using it in real combat…
The fighting was hard at first, the ghosts weren’t very difficult, more like spectral zombies than anything, motivated by mindless hunger and their master’s command more than any tactics, but fighting in close spaces with someone so different took adjusting. At first Patli’s rapid movements disoriented him, her footfalls and cackles of combat throwing off his aim.
He was too slow for Patli as well, every time she tried to bounce off him or weave around him they seemed out of sync. Soon, though, the two found their rhythm, Patli making more precise movements Francis could read better, and Francis fighting more aggressively to work with her.
If any of Andre’s mind remained intact he would have recognized two young warriors growing together, even felt pride that the ways he learned as a youth, in some form, were still alive in his home.
Unfortunately, all that dominated his mind was the silence that somehow rang louder than the battle around him. The absence of the song was a weight on his soul he couldn’t remove, and it drove him mad with anger as he began to see these children as the forces keeping the song from him.
“YOU WILL RETURN THE SONG!” He roared as the final ghost fell to Francis’ glowing blade, bringing his own great axe down brutally at the pair.
Francis grunted as he held his blade up, hearing that massive axehead slice through the stale air fast enough to block it, though the effort to hold it back made his arms shake…
“We don’t have a song! What are you talking about?!” Francis groaned, knocking the ghost’s blade away to get some distance. “We can help you find the song!” he tried. “Just stop attacking and tell us what it was!”
“My lips would defile the song of my Lady if I spoke it!” He growled, lunging forward as Francis dipped aside, letting him stumble past.
“I’m not fuckin Shazam here, buddy! Going to need a little more to work with!” Francis shouted back.
He knew this wasn’t helping, he could tell the ghost was beyond any help. He could, however, buy time, keep his attention as Patli went to work with ‘Plan B’ for ghosts.
The girl slipped past the fighting pair, pushing the heavy lid of the sarcophagus aside to reveal the skeleton within. For a moment she felt a pang of sympathy for him. Tucked so reverently into the burial spot, his armor polished one final time, axe in hand, he clearly was a man of great honor for his people before this.
“May you fight eternally in the realm of the gods, great warrior. Be free of this madness...” she whispered before reaching into her pocket for a pouch of blessed salt, pouring it over his bones.
The ghost shuddered as if feeling some discomfort, groaning as he stopped his swing halfway to glare at Patli. “Disturb not my bones, song thief!” He shouted, lunging at her only to stop as Francis lept on him from behind, plunging his enchanted blade into the ghost’s back as deep as he could.
“Do it Patli!” He shouted, holding on for dear life as he was bucked back and forth like he was riding a mechanical bull.
In a flash, green flames washed over the bones, a wail of anguish coming from the ghost as his body and spirit began to fade together.
“Rest.” Francis grunted as he hopped off the ghost’s back. “Your time has passed, let the calm of eternity soothe your broken mind.”
“You will be honored as a warrior should be, a more dignified fate than this...” Patli added, and for a brief moment the pair could see that smile soften, the madman’s grin fading into a more genuine, relaxed, smile as he felt himself vanish.
“Easy hunt my ass.” Patli panted, the strain of manifesting that fire as well as keeping Francis’ sword alight starting to wear her down.
“Take my arm.” Francis offered, sheathing his blade again as he moved to support her.
“This some fancy pants chivalry?” Patli teased, a bit weaker than she usually did as Francis rolled his eyes, the two making their way out of the barrow together much more unified than they came down the hill to it, at least.
Outside Harlow’s team was already surrounding things, having moved in when they realized the pair were taking too long, but not hearing any signs of distress that’d make them come in… not that Harlow wasn’t ready, hand gripping his pistol’s handle in the holster tight enough to make his knuckles turn white…
“I see them coming out.” Tatyana offered, putting a hand on his shoulder. “I think they’re okay.” She smiled, hoping to relax him so the pair didn’t see him so concerned.
“Yea… never doubted it.” Harlow answered with a soft sigh, giving her a grateful look before composing himself just as the pair staggered out. There’d be time for debriefing and reports later, for now all he cared about was getting the two home safely.
As the Roche helicopter took off peace did return to the area, no trace of the spirit remaining as he was finally laid to rest properly once again. Though that peace wasn’t as welcome to everyone as it was to the locals. Deep in the nearby river a figure stirred, snarling in anger as she felt her magic fading away with the spirit.
The lands of France have many legacies.
Legacies of heroes, of hunters, new and old figures carving their own tales into its history. It also has a long legacy of beasts, creatures older than many kingdoms, older than France itself as an entity. They have their own legacies to live up to, and as a skeletal, clawed, hand scraped the now useless sigil that once reanimated the knight, yet another scion of such legacies was rising. After all, some things were best done personally.

Recap/review 15.02: “Raising Hell”
THEN: Sam shot God! Welcome to the end. Demon!Jack. Last week's non-scary ghosts or spirits or whatever. Strangely missing from the "Then:" Sam's godhole vision. It's actually a very short "Then." Maybe the episode itself is so good, so crammed full of wonderful things, that the "Then" had to be kept brief to make room for all of it.
Tumblr media
Or then again, maybe not.
Now. We're still in Harlan, Kansas. A woman holding a scarf over her nose and mouth sneaks into the forbidden zone, and is startled by a neighbor. Or "neighbor." She's seen Close Encounters and knows the benzene story is fake (but if it was true, lady, I don't think that scarf would save you). And yet she's apparently never seen a horror movie, because the fact that her "neighbor" is silently and creepily staring at her doesn't raise any alarm bells. He stabs her a few times and then smokes out into an old-timey ghost who says "Disembowel. D-I-S-E-M-B-O-W-E-L. Disembowel." Well. Okay. She certainly doesn't look disemboweled, but I'll take your word for it. I mean, you spelled it and everything.
Title card. (BTW, you need to check out this very through breakdown of everything you're missing in the title card. It's fantastic.)
Nighttime. Harlan High School. Sam is large and in charge, but the people are restless. And apparently there are "hunters in the zone." Sam gets everyone's attention and tells them the EPA will be here tomorrow (a lie) and they need to stay out of the zone (the truth) and is adorably befuddled when he asks if there are any questions and everyone raises their hand. He's wearing a huge chain around his neck and, unfortunately, has gone back to the undershirt.

The zone. Dean and Belphagar. Dean's EMF meter is going crazy, and Belphagar says there are spirits about (are they ghosts? souls? spirits?) but they don't like him so they skedaddled. (Do we believe that?) Dean can't believe he's working with a demon again, and Belphagar can't believe he's working with a hunter, and it's the classic buddy comedy all over again. Except it's not a comedy and they're not buddies. (Do I miss Metatron?) He reminds us that his rationale for working with hunters is that he liked Hell the way it was. (Do we believe that?)
There's a fiery blast at the zone border, and even though Dean was facing it and Belphagar was facing in the other direction, Belphagar is the one who points it out and says "escape attempt, eleven o'clock." The bad guys can't cross the barrier, but rock salt can, which is convenient. Dean blasts a spirit away, who I believe is the same one from the "Then" but I can't be bothered to confirm and is relieved that the warding still works. Belphagar expositions that it won't last forever, and these ghosts/spirits/whatever are more dangerous than average. For example, the ghost Dean just shot was Francis Tumbelty, aka Jack the Ripper.
(Sidebar: Okay, I did actually rewind and use closed-captioning to confirm what Jack said, because what I heard was Francis Tomelty. And here's how my brain works: I can't remember my kid's phone number, I can't remember my license plate number, I can't remember to call the guy to fix the garage door opener, but I do remember that musician Sting's first wife was named Frances Tomelty. That's how useless my brain is. But Wikipedia confirms that Francis Tumbelty is, in fact, a Jack the Ripper suspect.)
Tumblr media
I know, Dean, I feel the same way.
High school. It's daylight now. The citizens are still restless, someone's wife is "missing," the benzene story is wearing thin (sidebar: I'm still using captions, and they misspelled benzene,) and people are plotting an escape.
Zone. Ghosts/spirits/whatever are gathering in one of the houses. Francis Tumbelty, who does not have a British accent (but it turns out he was born in Ireland but raised in America so okay, I guess someone did their research), informs the group that they were released from Hell by God himself. And all of these spirits know what hunters are. And Belphegar's name is actually Belphegor. Well. So much to learn tonight. Tumbelty says they need to gather the spirits who are still in hiding. And they can break the warding because "Warding is a door, doors have locks, locks have keys." Actually, the analogy I would have used is that warding is a lock but WHATEVER. Their plan is to "make it as ugly as possible for those who stand guard." Well, the ineffective spooky makeup will help.
Outside. Hunters are patrolling the perimeter. Civilians sneak out of the bushes and then walk right down the middle of the dang street. And then meet a couple of very unscary ghosts. Oh no, what will happen?
I don't know, because we cut back to the high school. They found the first woman's body, and Cas thinks they need to tell her family, and Sam's all, can't do that yet, people are gonna panic. They're interrupted by the arrival of Rowena, which was a surprise to me because I covered the guest star credits. Although it shouldn't have been a surprise, since Dean called her for help in the previous episode. (See how useless my brain is?) She pretends to be more interested in Cas than Sam but I'm not fooled.
Sam says "Remember a couple of years ago when we were trying to get rid of Amara," as if that's how the conversation would go, as if that's anything either of them would need to be reminded of. What he really would have said was "You know the soul bomb you made for Amara? We need another one of those."
WHATEVER.
They don't want to use it as a bomb, they just want a way to capture the ghosts. Rowena thinks it would be too difficult, but they're interrupted by someone who tells Sam they have "a situation."
Zone. The situation is that the two civilians are facing down Dean and Belphegor. And apparently they've been standing there long enough for Sam to actually show up at the zone, which is miles away from where he was. WHATEVER. Dean explains that the guy is married to the woman who was D-I-S-E-M-B-O-W-E-L-E-D earlier and came to look for her. (BTW, we're almost 10 minutes in, and this is the first scene with Sam and Dean together.) Sam, in his kind way, tells them they need to go back to the school. Then black goo drips out of their eyes and Dean realizes they're possessed. The whole standing-and-staring part didn't clue him in (WHATEVER) but now he gets it.
Tumblr media
Bowlegs! Hair blowing in the breeze! Something for everyone!
Tumbelty appears and tells them if they don't open the warding, the spirits are going to kill these two civilian vessels. The civilians drop to the ground, groaning in pain, and I remember back when the guys would have let the spirits out in order to save two innocent people. Or at least would have been conflicted about it. (WHATEVER.)
However, some unexpected shots ring out, sprinkling the possessed civilians with... confetti? How festive. Tumbelty zaps out and the Winchesters and Belphegor turn to see none other than Arthur Ketch. Who is also a surprise to me. I guess that gig as an insurance agent didn't work out. Dean seems ridiculously annoyed to see him. Ridiculous considering that they were working together fairly recently. (WHATEVER.)
And now, since none of my regular download sources worked out and I'm forced to rewatch on the CW app, I'm sitting through commercials. Like a goddamn animal.
Back at the school. Ketch says he just happened to be in the area when they sent out the call for hunters. Dean's still not pleased. What is his problem? Am I forgetting something? Did they leave on bad terms? His gun, stolen from the BMoL, shoots iron flakes. Which somehow expels the spirit without hurting the vessel. He and Rowena reacquaint themselves, and she holds no hard feelings against him regarding the whole prisoner thing, since he let her escape. Well, you actually bought that escape, Rowena, but okay. There is an uncomfortable level of eyefucking, as least as far as the Winchesters are concerned.
Belphegor shows up and they have to explain to Ketch that Jack is dead and oh, Sam's face, when he says "dead." This is the first time this episode has made me feel anything. Well, anything good. And it turns out Ketch was actually contracted by "an attractive female demon" (seriously, that just means a demon in an attractive female vessel but WHATEVER) to kill Belphegor. Her name is Ardat and I guess she's gonna show up later. Yawn.
Tumblr media
At least sad Sammy is good.
Reno? I laughed and said ha ha, I wonder if Amara is here and it turns out she is! (Because, again, I covered the guest stars.) She's getting a massage. Her maseusse is replaced by Chuck, who looks about 10-20 years younger than he did the last time we saw him. (Just for Men. Find it in the men's section.) She's annoyed with his presence. He's rambling. He liked the Game of Thrones ending, which I guess is supposed to signal what an awful hack of a storyteller he is. Or to warn us that we won't like the ending of our own Show. Or both.
High school. Poor Cas has to lie to Restless Citizen #3 that they're looking for the other missing citizens. "You said you'd keep us safe!" the guys says. That cuts deep, man. Meanwhile, Rowena has given Dean a shopping list. She asks him about Ketch, even though, as Dean points out, they've obviously met. "That was more of a torturer-torturee relationship. Fun, but I didn't really get to know him." But Dean doesn't want to play matchmaker, and says she shouldn't get involved with Ketch. "I mean, Sam is right here," he says. "Why don't you guys get off high center and do it?" (No, not really.)
Cas comes up behind Dean, all rumpled and sad and wanting a hug, and he apologizes for "dropping the puck." Dean doesn't want to hear it. He's so very angry, at Cas and at Chuck and at his life being one giant rat maze. Cas doesn't think their whole existence has been a lie, because even though they were in a maze, they were still living their lives in that maze. That's what life is. Chuck sets up the obstacles, but they still run their own obstacle course. Dean doesn't accept this.
It's interesting that Dean is the one who's taking the truth about Chuck so hard. Sam and Cas were the ones who had faith, and you'd think they'd be knocked harder by the realization that there was never a benevolent God. But on the other hand, Sam's so used to being manipulated by outside forces; this is nothing new to him. And Cas has already seen how the sausage is made. So they're both just, yeah, this is how it is, let's deal with it.
However. I'm not feeling the Dean-Cas conflict at all. I don't really care. And I suspect it's going to be a Big Deal. {sigh}
Tumblr media
I’m definitely feeling angry Dean. So much.
Zone. Nighttime. Dean and Ketch are on patrol. I mean, I guess it makes sense to leave Chief Sam in charge at the school, but I'm tired of the guys being split up. Dean gives Ketch one of the giant chains they've been wearing, and says it's iron, to prevent possession. Wow, that would be a heavy chain. They talk about God and Rowena, and then Dean gets a text message. "Trouble. Two hunters haven't checked in." Uh oh!
Meat packing plant. Seriously? There is a meat packing plant in the middle of this residential area? So many chains hanging from the ceiling. I wonder what kind of cage flashbacks Sam would have in here. (And if you fic that, I'd like to be notified, please and thank you.) Dean and Ketch search the place and then it gets cold and then Ketch is hurled against a wall. Hard. Lizzie Borden appears, prepared to take an ax to Dean's head, but an electronically altered voice says "Stop! Get out!" She zaps out and we see the voice belongs to... Kevin???
Turns out when Chuck said he was sending Kevin to Heaven, he lied. Um. Why? What's the rationale for this? I mean, he did things to make a good story, but what was the purpose of sending Kevin to Hell and not letting the Winchesters (or anybody else) know? Dean promises they'll get him to Heaven, and Kevin accept this happily, because Kevin knows that Dean always takes care of him, as promised. (Ha.) Kevin can feel the wards weakening, but he doesn't know if the other spirits can detect it. And the other spirits are afraid of Kevin because he was personally cast down by God. Um. Okay. WHATEVER. But this tells Dean they can use him as a spy.
Reno. Chuck is flipping through channels, and he spends a couple of seconds watching a cooking show where the recipe involves tripe. Which is so meta, isn't it?
Tumblr media
He's whiny. I'm over it. So is Amara. And she suddenly detects (WHATEVER) that he needs her for some reason. She can feel his own version of the godhole? She pokes at it and it hurts. "Something happened. You're not complete. You're not at full strength."
Zone. Sam doesn't think using Kevin is safe. Well, he's already dead, so. Belphegor shows up and they're all, your wards are failing and he's all, duh, I told you that was happening, I thought you heroes would have this wrapped up by now. (Are they really fading due to the nature of wards, or is this deliberate? Discuss.) And this spell was a one-time thing - he can't do it again. Because...? We'll never know, because neither brother asks. WHATEVER.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This conversation is like some people. Stupid but pretty.
Belphegor knows Kevin and calls him a "whiny millenial" and my goodness, he gets around a lot for a low-level grunt, doesn't he? He tells the guys that Kevin can't get into Heaven because once a soul is cast into Hell, Heaven can't take it. I am quite sure that Show has forgotten about John and Bobby, who both accomplished that very thing, and I'm shocked to find Show actually address this. Belphegor says God made an exception, and that isn't likely to happen again, since God doesn't like them any more. Oh no! The only way to fix this is if someone else takes over for God!
Reno. Chuck checks out his own godhole, which looks just like Sam's. He pokes at it and winces in pain.
Zone. Sam feels pain in his own godhole. Because they're connected! He lies that he's okay and it's getting better and Dean's all yeah, right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sam, for a professional liar, you are so bad at it.
Zone. Spirit meeting. They know the wards are fading. Tumbelty thinks they should attack at a weak point, rather than waiting for the whole thing to collapse. Kevin shows up. They all know him, and some fear him. But Tumbelty knows he's buds with the Winchesters. Because all these spirits know the Winchesters. You know, I can understand all the demons knowing who they are. That's justified. But every resident of Hell? I'm not feeling it. WHATEVER.
High school. More heavy flirting between Rowena and Ketch. Somehow Ketch knows something she doesn't know - that a jolt of electricity will fast-forward her spell. Can we just skip this part? It makes as much sense as the Rowena/Gabriel detour when they were trying to open the rift. They're interrupted by a call from Dean, who demands she hurry. Yes, please.
Zone. Rowena shows up with a bag and runs right into Tumbelty. Who knows her. Because they used to date. All this romance for Rowena, and Sam's still sitting alone at the high school. Come on, Ro. Climb that mountain. Tumbelty tells her they've got Kevin, and sends a message for the Winchesters to meet them at their spirit house. Ketch shows up behind him, with his iron confetti gun, and blasts him, but Tumbelty whacks him with a rock. However, Rowena escapes.
{Commercial time. Zombieland 2 looks good.}
TFW is finally all together. Rowena tells them about Kevin. Dean asks if she has the soulcatcher, and for some reason, Sam has a problem with the name soulcatcher. I suppose this was supposed to be humorous. She does, but she doesn't know if it will work.
Spirit house. Winchesters show up. Tumbelty says if they shut down the warding, he won't devour Kevin. They say no. Tumbelty sticks his hand into Kevin, and this takes a really really long time, but Rowena finally shows up with the crystal and catches all of their souls. Boy, it's a good time devouring Kevin's soul took so very, very long. Rowena tells them this crystal isn't as powerful as the earlier version, and can only gather a few souls at a time. In fact, some of the souls here got away. Oooh, I wonder who.
Kevin tells them about the plan to break through the warding at the weakest point. Jump to the weakest point. There are at least 100 spirits there, according to Belphegor, and more are coming. Dean brings his gun up when someone approaches, but it's only Ketch. Oh, good, he escaped safely from Tumbelty's clutches! How fortunate. It's odd that he's no longer wearing that huge iron chain, though.
Dean tries shooting at the spirits they can't see, but Belphegor tells him there are too many. So Rowena goes forth with her soulcatcher. She still seems to be on this side of the warding, which means she's able to drag the souls through the barrier. I wonder if it would have worked better if she'd gone past the barrier. Then Ketch backhands her because, SURPRISE SURPRISE, he's actually possessed. He drips black goo from his eyes, just to confirm, and picks up the soulcatcher. Dean tries to shoot him, but is conveniently out of ammo. Tumbelty!Ketch monologues and then Dean pulls out his handgun and shoots him and he... tosses the soulcatcher to Dean? Drops it horizontally? Somehow, the thing ends up flying into Dean's hand.
WHATEVER.
(Or did Ketch toss it to him once he was depossessed? Discuss.)
Rowena takes it back and sucks up the few visible souls, including Tumbelty's. Yay! Success! Is Ketch alive? Dunno!
Time jump. Ketch is alive, with only a wounded shoulder, and is being loaded into an ambulance. Cas tells Sam that he tried to heal him, but couldn't. "You're just tired," Sam says. "We all are." Oh, I don't think so, Sam. Dean apologizes to Ketch, and lets us know it was an iron bullet, which is why it expelled Tumbelty. Ketch and Rowena exchange a longing glance. Dean stares. Angrily, maybe? Angry that Mary's ex dared to look for love again? Angry that Rowena is flirting with someone else right in front of Sam? Angry that Ketch is such a wuss that he actually needs an ambulance, and medical treatment, for a mere bullet to the shoulder? Angry that he's stuck inside a Buckleming episode? All of the above? He and Rowena exchange an uncomfortable look.
Aftermath! Kevin doesn't want to stay in the zone and hang out with the guys. He knows he can't get into Heaven, so he's just gonna ghost around and wander the earth. Sam tells him this is a terrible way to exist, and Kevin points out that it's better than Hell. And Kevin and Sam give us what might be the motto for just this episode, or maybe for the entire season:
I'm sorry, Kevin. I wish there was some way to make this right.
Me too. But there isn't. And sometimes, you just gotta accept that.
Kevin tells the Winchesters he loves them (d'aw) and they don't say it back (aw) and Belphegor quite easily makes a little opening in the barrier. So easily, that it really makes you wonder why he has so little power to keep it going. Yep, it sure does. Kevin is gone. Sad waves.
Reno. Amara is hitting the road. Chuck isn't invited. And she knows he's too weak to do anything about it. He can't leave this world without her help, and she ain't helping.
Zone. We see dozens of glowing souls flitting about. The warding won't last long. We need a plan B. "How," asks Dean. How indeed.
So. When I watched this for the first time last night, I desperately wanted to fast forward through the scenes with the spirits in the house. And the Ketch/Rowena stuff. It wasn't any better on rewatch. Some of this episode was just the usual Buckleming nonsense - badly written, stupid things happen for stupid reasons, yada yada yada. But the Kevin plot... can we blame that on the Buckleming? Or was that a showrunner master plan? Either way, it's annoying. And probably pointless. The only good thing about this episode was the confirmation of the connection between Sam and Chuck. I noticed a distinct lack of excitement on my Tumblr feed, so maybe a lot of us feel the same way. If you haven't watched this one yet, my vote is: don't bother.
Please help me stay unspoiled, thanks!

Comic Series to Read (Pt3)
+ALTERS by Paul Jenkins & Leila Liz
Tumblr media
As the world struggles to accept the emergence of a new kind of human species known as alterations, or "Alters," a young woman must navigate the path to becoming her true self, while struggling with the complications of her civilian life and the responsibilities of her newfound power. This groundbreaking series - years in the making - begins the saga of a young woman who can only really be herself... whenever she is not herself.
Fascinating view of the world through the eyes of someone who is not only hiding their secret hero abilities, but also that she IS a she. I really enjoy this book, and all the little details that unfold the more you read on.[Trans!protagonist, violence, disabled character(s), general death and mayhem, superpowers, a few unfortunate slurs, etc.]
.
+GENERATION ZERO by Fred Van Lente & Francis Portela
Tumblr media
Years ago, the children of the experimental strike team known as Generation Zero were taken from their families by Project Rising Spirit, a private weapons contractor, and raised to be psychic soldiers. After years of taking orders, they have fought for and won their freedom. Now, the world's most wanted teenagers have pledged to protect each other tooth and claw, while using their extraordinary abilities to right wrongs for a generation without a future... To fight for kids, just like them. One of those kids is Keisha Sherman, whose boyfriend just turned up dead after a suspicious car crash in Rook, Michigan - a newly booming tech town that sprang from rags to super-riches seemingly overnight. When Keisha makes a desperate plea into her webcam, the local high school suddenly finds itself with several unusual new students... But as word of Generation Zero's presence spreads rapidly through the halls, this volatile band of teenage upstarts is about to discover that they're far from the most extraordinary thing lurking behind Rook's stainless-steel facade...
This is one of those stories where you THINK you know what will happen, but surprise, you’re fucking wrong, it’s waaaaaaaaay better and also, way worse than you imagine. What they come to save the town from is something that takes far bigger than you can even comprehend...
[MH/disabled protags, violence, deaths, etc.]
.
+ECLIPSE by Zachary Kaplan & Giovanni Timpano
Tumblr media
Imagine if sunlight burned you alive. In the near future, a mysterious solar event has transformed the sun's light into deadly immolating rays. The world's few survivors now live in nocturnal cities. But a killer emerges who uses sunlight to burn his victims, and when he targets the daughter of a solar power mogul, it falls to a disillusioned solar engineer to protect her.
Actually really, really liked this one. The effortless world-building and the degree of chaos instilled by the whole world going to, literal hell. And it’s not... far-fetched, not really. I mean, in Aus it was super fucking hot three years in a row, like, unusual even for us hot... it’s that hint of ‘maybe future’ that draws you in and the story traps you. [Violence, murder, immolation, drugs/alcohol use, etc]
.
+COPPERHEAD by Jay Faerber, Ron Riley & Scott Godlewski
Tumblr media
Welcome to Copperhead, a grimy mining town on the edge of a backwater planet. Single mom Clara Bronson is the new sheriff, and on her first day she'll have to contend with a resentful deputy, a shady mining tycoon, and a family of alien hillbillies. And did we mention the massacre? Questions swirl around not only the murder mystery, but around Sheriff Bronson herself. What brought her to a place like Copperhead? Is she running from something? Or towards something?
It feels like you want to like and hate the characters, because they feel a little too realistic; the situations may be in space and crazy alien nonsense, but some things remain the same. Definitely felt a bit slow to begin with, but it all made sense in context the more I read... [Violence, Surgery, Death, Big Spooky Bullshit Aliens, etc.]
.
+TREES by Warren Ellis & Jason Howard
Tumblr media
Ten years after they landed. All over the world. And they did nothing, standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if there were no-one here and nothing under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive.
Okay, so that’s vague. Consider this, ten years ago, aliens dropped some gigantic cylinders on earth in strategic places, humanity called them ‘trees’; they don’t talk to us, we’re fleas to them, nothing alive or worth noting. Occasionally, a tree floods green sludge that annihilates everything around it. The world is broken by them.
You follow a handful of different stories that all seem to meld together somehow. Follow a research team in the ice; a young painter who finds himself in the shadow of the china tree; a young woman who seizes control of her little world through the fear the trees elicit, etc. You never know what will happen.
I, personally, loved it; but that’s just me. can’t wait for volume 3, though. [LGBPTA+ characters, violence, alien trees, gangs, violence, murder and cruelty, etc.]
.
+THE EMPTY by Jimmy Robinson
Tumblr media
Tanoor is a hunter struggling to feed her village in an apocalyptic world of poison and decay, but Tanoor finds hope when she discovers a stranger named Lila who has the ability to grow life from death-a power that could change the world of The Empty.
You know, when I first saw the artstyle, I was a little put off because I thought it was just someone exaggerating features for the hell of it; but you know what, the more you read, the more you realise how and why they are like that. How evolution shaped them, because of the world they had come from, and survived in.
Basic story summary? Tanoor, badass lady hunter trolling through the emptiness to find food for her asshole people, lead by foolish elders too afraid of their own shadow to take chances.  Lila, a different kind of being, ends up in the Empty and finds Tanoor; that’s when the fun really begins as they try to reverse the terrible poisoning that has created such a toxic, barren world. It was pretty engaging; can’t wait to see what volume 2 will bring, bc you really do get invested in the characters. [Violence, Death, Wasteland, Xenophobia, etc.]
.
+ZODIAC STARFORCE by Kevin Panetta & Paulina Gancheau
Tumblr media
They're an elite group of teenage girls with magical powers who have sworn to protect our planet against dark creatures . . . as long as they can get out of class! Known as the Zodiac Starforce, these high-school girls aren't just combating math tests. They're also battling monsters--not your typical afterschool activity! But when an evil force from another dimension infects team leader Emma, she must work with her team of magically powered friends to save herself--and the world--from the evil Diana and her mean-girl minions!
Sounds like just another Sailor Moon style magic girl team, and that’s pretty much the mindset I went into it with; but yeah, I was wrong. Honestly it surprised me, really loved them.
And the villain is so fucking relateable, sure she’s doing a Bad, but ther reason behind it makes sense. At least half of you would take the same chances and fuck up too. Not justifying her shit, but really, you get WHY.  Love the zodiac force though, so damn cute and silly and ridiculous. [LGBPTA+ protags, girl power, violence, chaos, etc.]

Unique methods of interactive media storytelling (NITW Text boxes)
Coziness in games
Non traditional methods of mechanical interaction ie. traditional control methods, with more unique player expression
Having an Interesting failure spectrum (Tom Francis thoughts on why MGSV is a fun stealth game, due to its wide array of failure states)
Analogue/varied means of  expression within one mechanic or activity (jumping in mario, building a snowman in NITW prologue game, Lost Constellation)
Ethos of messy fast prototyping iterartion and production (inspired by Jenny Jiao Hsia talk about prototyping)
Affecting audio
Techniques
Interaction Design
Branching Narratives + Dialogue
Games AI
Procedural Generation
Advanced Audio and Visual Processing
Inspiring Works
Heat Signature - Suspicious Developments, Tom Francis
Roguelike, top down action/ stealth/ heist game where you play as different intergalactic heist/bounty hunter people that breaks into spaceships. Extremely systemic game that encourages players to find interesting solutions to problems by providing a wide variety of interesting sci-fi tools to the player. Systemic gameplay+ systemic player narratives as told through gameplay plans  being made and then changing/going awry as well as conditions constraining players to be creative.
Hotline Miami - Dennaton Games, Jonatan Söderström. Dennis Wedin
Surreal, hyperviolent top down action game about the trancelike sprees that a masked killer enacts, that strongly highlights the violent obsession of videogames and culture. Has several factors that contribute to a sense of good gamefeel, and making what should be a frustrating experience instead induce a flow state.
Sid Meier's Covert Action - MPS Labs, MicroProse
Interesting systemic narrative that the player experiencing by foiling and interacting with various agents and stages of a spy plot. Systemic narrative that is expressed by the gameplay systems. Feeling of the ai acting irrespective to the player. Narrative experience of player feels quite systemic.
Night in the Woods (NITW) - Infinite Fall, Scott Benson, Alec Holowka, Bethany Hockenberry + Finji Adam Saltsman, Rebekah Saltsman, Em Halberstadt
Anthropomorphic animal narrative, platforming, adventrue game that tells the story of a 20 year old that comes back to her home town and and friends after leaving college. Tells an emotive story unconventional by games standards in a very playful way that has some traditional gameplay elements (platforming) but also makes interactive more unusual verbs (a pizza eating section, and pretzel stealing microgame). Creates an extremely strong, cozy sense of place. Expressive within the limits of its digital medium+storytelling (wide variety of personality conveyed through text box animation).
Minit - Vlambeer, Jan Willem Nijman, Kitty Calis, Jukio Kallio, Dominik Johann
Small, short adventure game where you die and every minute and respawn at the same space, learning about the world, optimising your route and changing the world slightly with each successive run. Very polished game with superb gamefeel (all vlambeer games have great gamefeel+juice)
Kentucky Route Zero - Cardboard Computer- Jake Elliott, Tamas Kemenczy, Ben Babbitt
The great american novel in game form. A magical realist story about debt to the past. Extremely important and affective narrative game. ‘The Entertainment’ - Interlude, elucidates relationship and interplay between player and developers that creates the game experience. Creates a powerful atmosphere + utilises branching narrative
I also wrote down a bunch of other stuff I’ve been thinking about in a big jumbled list for help during ideation process. This is just junk floating around, mood board of my head.

Initial Ideas
A game where you play as a witch exploring a modern magical realist city at night. Should have an interesting traversal mechanic. All about traversal, dancing and screaming in a city at night, strong sense of place + atmosphere: inspired by films such as playtime, thief, drive, collateral, fruitvale station, lost in translation as well as games like NITW. Thought about more in this doc: one pager section on 2nd page: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1O3NC8HqwmERq57Dcqqc2d2Ih34ZVO4-vEQPnVTKRyOk/edit?usp=sharing
Some kind of game themed around the desert/stoner rock music genre which includes acts like Red Fang, Kyuss and Sleep. Make use of AAVP to have a dynamic soundtrack responding to gameplay that impacts the visuals. The game’s mechanics should be directly inspired by the theming, and common features of the genre, could be action oriented, with rhythm game influences. One game that would probably be worth looking at in relation to this is the recently released Tetris Effect, while I would not be as interested in a game as abstracted as tetris, how they achieve a flow state, and have music and visuals informed by gameplay would be worth looking in to. I feel this game is more likely to involve rapid prototyping.
Create a languid game about chilling out on a ship with crew and passengers. Setting could be sci-fi or more historic - chatting on computer to far flung galactic friends and doing menial space jobs/ tasks aboard ship. The setting and experience of the place can draw from ideas about coziness in games + make use of Branching Narrative/Dialogue. Potentially also think about how procedural narrative could be a factor. Inspired by Moby Dick, NITW and Purgatory
Hotline Miami/Goap/Diehard - ‘Create a systemic top-down stealth action game where the player is asked to foil a developing plot/heist by a group of AI agents whose plan and activities respond to the players attempts to derail it. The focus should be on the player feeling like they are responding to the AI’s adaptations to the player interrupting their plot. Each level would be one plot/ situation the player is thrust into. The project is inspired by the evolving plots of covert action, the setting/circumstances of Die-Hard and the gameplay/perspective of hotline miami. This project will involve development of a complex AI system that could be implemented via a GOAP method.
Walkie talky/radio gameplay mechanic to solicit/disseminate information
Research into the effectiveness of procedural vs authored content in games, as large games increasingly find themselves trying to use procedural generation to meet the demands of growing content demand they are finding it difficult to reconcile this with a desire to create quality, curated content, narrative or otherwise. I propose research into the various ways procedural vs authored content has been divvied up in games, the amount of people working in each area, how much curated work is required for procedural work to be effective and the reception/perception of these two methods to create content for games. The means by which this could be investigated is perhaps by creating some data sets of very simple different possible mechanical games in Unity or more narrative ones in twine, that are sorted into different groups of procedural / authored games. We would then measure the level of player engagement over the course of their time with the games and within the context of how long it took to make the given games. Context + techniques: procedural generation + branching narratives

“It’s an Old Song” | A Playlist for ENG 1131 | PLAY
A Song for (almost) Every Text We’ll Read
 Hades and Persephone (Hades POV)
Never feel too good in crowds | With folks around, when they're playing | The anthems of rape culture loud | Crude and proud, creatures baying | All I've ever done is hide | From our times, when you're near me | Honey, when you kill the lights and kiss my eyes | I feel like a person for a moment of my life
o2. “Love Crime” – Siouxsie Sioux & Brian Reitzell
 Hades and Persephone (Persephone POV)
Oh, the skies, tumbling from your eyes | So sublime, the chase to end all time | Seasons call and fall, from grace and uniform | Anatomical and metaphysical | I will survive, live and thrive | Win this deadly game | Love crime
o3. “Sympathy For the Devil” – The Rolling Stones
 Hercules and Devil!Hades
Please allow me to introduce myself | I'm a man of wealth and taste | I've been around for a long, long year | Stole many a man's soul and faith
o4. “To Pluto’s Moon” – My Brightest Diamond
“Orpheus and Eurydice”
How I tried to catch you while you ran ahead of me | I lassoed mars to see if you were hiding there | But you'd already ran past Jupiter to Pluto's moon | And my rope won't reach that moon | This is a state of electrical shock | You were so beautiful I thought you'd last forever | But you came and you went when the lights went out | You went like you came: In a lightning bolt
o5. “Road to Hell” – Anais Mitchell
Hadestown
There was a railroad line on the road to Hell | There was a young man down on bended knee | And brother, thus begins the tale | Of Orpheus and Eurydice! | It’s a love song | It’s a tale of a love that never dies | It’s a love song | About someone who tries
 o6. “Roxanne” – The Police
Moulin Rouge!
Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light | Those days are over | You don't have to sell your body to the night | Roxanne, you don't have to wear that dress tonight | Walk the streets for money | You don't care if it's wrong or if it's right
 o7. “Haunting” – Halsey
“Cupid and Psyche”
I was as pure as a river | But now I think I'm possessed | You put a fever inside me | And I've been cold since you left | I've got a boyfriend now and he's made of gold | And you've got your own mistakes in a bed at home | I'm hoping you could save me now, but you break and fold | You've got a fire inside, but your heart's so cold | Cause I've done some things that I can't speak | And I've tried to wash you away, but you just won't leave | So won't you take a breath and dive in deep? | Cause I came here so you'd come for me | I'm begging you to keep on haunting | I'm begging you to keep on haunting me
o8. “The Beast” – Austra
“Beauty and the Beast”
The morning that I was born again | I was made into a beast | Am I free now, am I at peace? | Is that the ground below me, or your feet?
o9. “Prologue” – Howard Ashman and Alan Menken
 Disney’s Beauty and the Beast
Instrumental
1o. “Become the Beast” - Karliene
 “The Tiger’s Bride”
To capture a predator | You can't remain the prey | You have to become | An equal | In every way | So look in the mirror | And tell me, who do you see? | Is it still you? | Or is it me? | Become the beast | We don't have to hide | Do I terrify you | Or do you feel alive? | Do you feel the hunger | Does it howl inside? | Does it terrify you? | Or do you feel alive?
11. “Hallelujah” – Jeff Buckley
Shrek
But baby I've been here before | I've seen this room and I've walked this floor | You know, I used to live alone before I knew ya | And I've seen your flag on the marble arch | And love is not a victory march | It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah | Hallelujah | Hallelujah | Hallelujah | Hallelujah
12. “Marry Me” – Emilie Autumn
“Bluebeard”
Marry me, he said, through his rotten teeth, bad breath, and then | Marry me instead of that strapping young goatherd, but when | I was in his bed, and my father had sold me | I knew I hadn't any choice, hushed my voice, did what any girl would do | And when I'm beheaded at least I was wedded | And when I am buried at least I was married | I'll hide my behavior with wine as my savior | But, oh, what beautiful things I'll wear | What beautiful dresses and hair | I'm lucky to share his bed | Especially since I'll soon be dead
13. “Where the Wild Roses Grow” – Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
“The Bloody Chamber”
They call me The Wild Rose | But my name was Elisa Day | Why they call me it I do not know | For my name was Elisa Day | On the third day he took me to the river | He showed me the roses and we kissed | And the last thing I heard was a muttered word | As he knelt above me with a rock in his fist
14. “O Death” – Jen Titus
 “A Lady’s Hands Are Cold”
Oh, Death | Won't you spare me over another year? | But what is this that I can't see | With ice cold hands taking hold of me? | When God is gone and the Devil takes hold | Who will have mercy on your soul? | Oh, Death
15. “Love the Way You Lie” – Skylar Grey
Jane Eyre
On the first page of our story | The future seemed so bright | Then this thing turned out so evil | I don't know why I'm still surprised | Even angels have their wicked schemes | And you take that to new extremes | But you'll always be my hero | Even though you've lost your mind
16. “Crazy in Love (2014 Remix)” - Beyoncé
Wide Sargasso Sea
I look and stare so deep in your eyes| I touch on you more and more every time | When you leave I'm begging you not to go | Call your name two or three times in a row | Such a funny thing for me to try to explain | How I'm feeling and my pride is the one to blame | I still don't understand | Just how your love can do what no one else can
17. “Little Red Riding Hood” – Sam the Sham and Pharaohs
“Little Red Riding Hood” + variants
Hey there Little Red Riding Hood | You sure are looking good | You're everything a big bad wolf could want | Listen to me | Little Red Riding Hood | I don't think little big girls should | Go walking in these spooky old woods alone
18. “Howl” – Florence and the Machine
“The Company of Wolves”
The fabric of your flesh, pure as a wedding dress | Until I wrap myself inside your arms I cannot rest | The saints can't help me now, the ropes have been unbound | I hunt for you with bloodied feet across the hallowed ground | And howl | Be careful of the curse that falls on young lovers | Starts so soft and sweet and turns them to hunters | A man who's pure of heart and says his prayers by night | May still become a wolf when the autumn moon is bright
19. “Lullaby” – The Cure
“Our Neighbor’s House”
On candy stripe legs | The Spiderman comes | Softly through the shadow of the evening sun | Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead | Looking for a victim shivering in bed
2o. “Werewolf” – Cat Power
“The Werewolf”
I saw the werewolf, and the werewolf was crying | Cryin' “nobody knows, nobody knows, body knows | How I loved the man, as I teared off his clothes” | Cryin' “nobody, no, nobody knows my pain | When I see that it's risen, that full moon again” | For the werewolf, for the werewolf have sympathy | For the werewolf, somebody like you and me
 21. “In the Woods Somewhere” – Hozier
“Margot’s Room”
When I awoke | The moon still hung | The night so black that the darkness hummed | I raised myself | My legs were weak | I prayed my mind be good to me | An awful noise | Filled the air | I heard a scream in the woods somewhere
22. “Lullaby For Cain” – Sinead O’Connor
“His Face All Red”
Envy stole your brother’s life | Came home murdered | peace of mind | Left you nightmares on the pillow | Sleep now | Soul surrendering your soul | The heart in you not whole | For love, but love walked on | Cast into the dark | Branded with the mark | Of shame; of Cain
 23. “Hedwig’s Theme” – John Williams
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
 Instrumental
 24. “Two Men in Love” – The Irrepressibles
The Shoebox Project
There's a strange love inside | It's getting louder, louder, louder, louder, louder | There's a danger I can't hide | Who I am, it's who I am | It's who I am, it's who I am | I'm in love, I'm in love
25. BONUS: “Science Fiction/Double Feature”
King Kong/The Creature From the Black Lagoon
Then something went wrong | For Fay Wray and King Kong | They got caught in a celluloid jam | Then at a deadly pace | It Came From Outer Space | And this is how the message ran... | Science fiction double feature | Doctor X will build a creature | See androids fighting Brad and Janet | Anne Francis stars in Forbidden Planet | Woah oh, oh oh oh | At the late night double feature picture show
 26. “The Mob Song” – Richard White and Cast
King Kong
We're not safe until he's dead | He'll come stalking us at night | Set to sacrifice our children | To his monstrous appetite | He'll wreak havoc on our village if we let him wander free | So it's time to take some action, boys | It's time to follow me | Hear him roar | See him foam | But we're not coming home | Till he's dead | Good and dead | Kill the Beast!
 27. “Jaws Theme” – John Williams
The Creature From the Black Lagoon
Instrumental
 28. What the Water Gave Me – Florence + The Machine
The Shape of Water
Time it took us | To where the water was | That's what the water gave me | And time goes quicker | Between the two of us | Oh, my love, don't forsake me | Take what the water gave me | Lay me down | Let the only sound | Be the overflow | Pockets full of stones | Lay me down | Let the only sound | Be the overflow
29. “I’d Like to See The Bad Guys Win Sometime” – Margo Guryan
“My Monster Boyfriend”
I'd like to see the bad guy get the girl | The good guy's always such a bore | He's well-behaved and he's so sincere | But you don't even get what he gives a horse | I'd like to see the bad guys get away | They're always getting shot or hung | Wouldn't it be | Thrilling to see | A happy ending ending unhappily? | I'd like to tell the good guys `it's no sin' | To let the bad guys win | Sometime | I'd like to see the bad guys win

Audio
The spooky times continue in our discussion of the modern day vampire romance classic -- no, not Fifty Shades of Grey, but -- as Francis Ford Coppola presents Bram Stoker's DRACULA and Hammer Films produces its failed cinematic serial CAPTAIN KRONOS: VAMPIRE HUNTER. How does Coppola's vision stack up against the Dracula ouvre? Do the terrible accents sink the whole ship? Does Captain Kronos need a big budget reboot? And who knew Stellar Star from Starcrash began her career as vampire hunter? All these questions, and more, are answered in the latest episode of the Forgotten Film Pod! Listen, won't you?
You can also listen to the Forgotten Film Pod on iTunes, Stitcher, and most pod-catchers near you.

We get to keep canon typical levels of fear and cannibalism and sickness but the sway of people towards despair is emphasized by their becoming increasingly undead and Turning others
Francis thinks James has gotten through it okay but then James smiles sadly and reveals bloody fangs and Francis has to stake him
ALTERNATIVELY Franklin expedition are a bunch of historians, people with English degrees, anthropologists, and ghost hunters (canon era = spiritualists, modern era = ghost adventures style vlogging, both works) all of whom have collectively managed to be the first people to explore this extremely fucking spooky old castle and there are vampires in it and it all just descends into Gothic™ Romantic™™ Chaos involving: Homoeroticism! Catholic themes and symbolism! Anti-imperialism! Velvet gowns! Swooning! Candles! More homoeroticism! Blood!
There's a guy in BBC Dracula ep 2 and he isn't Ian Hart but he looks enough like him that I'm now UTTERLY obsessed with the concept of The Terror, But It's Vampires

Telluride 2017: Angelina Jolie, Francis Ford Coppola, Ken Burns Films Make the Cut

Telluride 2017: Angelina Jolie, Francis Ford Coppola, Ken Burns Films Make the Cut
Actor Christian Bale and cinematographer Ed Lachman will receive special tributes at the Rocky Mountain festival that kicks off Friday.
As the metaphoric curtain rises on the 44th Telluride Film Festival, which is set to run Friday through Monday, the lineup of world premieres that will be unveiled in the Rocky Mountain town includes Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father, which re-creates life under the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia during the 1970s; Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ Battle of the Sexes, which stars Emma Stone and Steve Carell as tennis rivals Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs; Scott Cooper’s Western Hostiles, starring Christian Bale as an Army captain escorting a Cheyenne chief; Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour, in which Gary Oldman steps into the shoes of Winston Churchill: and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, with Saoirse Ronan in the title role.
Additionally, such high-profile titles as Alexander Payne’s satirical Downsizing, starring Matt Damon; Guillermo del Toro’s spooky The Shape of Water; and Andrew Haigh’s Lean on Pete, in which Steve Buscemi plays a washed-up horse trainer, will be dashing to Colorado after debuting at the Venice Film Festival.
Francis Ford Coppola is also bringing a new cut of his Harlem-set The Cotton Club, which will be titled Cotton Club Encore, that includes footage he was forced to cut from the 1984 release version of the film. “It’s a wonderfully restored vision,” says festival executive director Julie Huntsinger. “It’s what everybody should have seen. Nobody should have seen the version he was required to release years ago. There are minutes that have been added back in — Lonette McKee singing ‘Stormy Weather’ — things the world was robbed of.”
The fest will present its Silver Medallion Awards, which include onstage tributes to Bale, who will be accompanying Hostiles to the event, and also to cinematographer Ed Lachman, whose two tribute sessions will be accompanied by, first, director Todd Haynes’ 2002 Far From Heaven and, then, Haynes and Lachman’s new film Wonderstruck. A Special Medallion also will be given to Katriel Schory, director of the Israeli Film Fund.
And what other festival has an Oscar winner curating its shorts program? But that’s just what Barry Jenkins, a long-standing member of the Telluride family, will be doing this year. After debuting Moonlight at 2016’s fest — the film, of course, went on to win the best picture Oscar, while Jenkins earned the best adapted screenplay trophy — the filmmaker has assembled the shorts program that first screens Friday evening, and, says Huntsinger, “He’s such a great human being — he’s as enthusiastic, organized and exceptional as ever.”
As for the overall shape of this year’s Telluride program, which per tradition was not released until Thursday as the weekend’s attendees were already heading to the mountains, Huntsinger says: “I love it. I think it’s eclectic and that’s how it should be. We have something for everyone — massive, imaginative, audacious films right next to tiny little glorious gems that you need to take time to absorb. There’s such a diverse selection from the wildly surreal like Downsizing to the quiet, majestic Western that is Hostiles. You really see the panorama of humanity, for sure.”
Asked what might be the biggest surprise for this year’s festivalgoers, Huntsinger cites Jolie’s First They Killed My Father, which is based on Loung Ung’s 2000 memoir: “It’s set in Cambodia, nobody speaks English, it is a tremendous accomplishment, a fantastic film.” Huntsinger explains that she watched the film with festival co-director Tom Luddy, “and we were thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be so interesting to have people see this film and not tell them who the director is and have their reaction be whatever it would be?’ I wish so much there was a way that could happen, but it won’t. But I think there will be a lot of emotional reactions to this stunning achievement.”
Among the other films that she predicts will have audiences talking, Huntsinger cites: Darkest Hour, saying, “People, having seen The Crown, may have thought John Lithgow delivered a Winston Churchill that was spectacular, but Gary Oldman — I don’t know how to find the right hyperbolic words to describe his performance, such magnificence”; Paul McGuigan’s Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, in which Jamie Bell plays a young man who becomes enamored of film star Gloria Grahame, played by Annette Bening; and Lady Bird, in which Ronan plays a Sacramento high school student looking to escape her life.
There are films that wrestle with weighty subjects: Paul Schrader’s First Reformed stars Ethan Hawke and Amanda Seyfried as churchgoers who have each lost family members. And Barbet Schroeder’s documentary The Venerable W. looks at the tensions between Muslims and Buddhists. “It’s a frightful, awful subject, but he tells the story in a solemn, quiet way that devastates you over time,” Huntsinger says.
Other documentaries include a sampling of Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s upcoming PBS series The Vietnam War — the fest is screening episode nine — and the filmmakers will take part in a conversation with Coppola. Also on the docket are all six episodes of Errol Morris’ new true-crime series Wormwood that is heading to Netflix and Lisa Immordino Vreeland’s Love, Cecil, a portrait of British photographer and designer Cecil Beaton.
As for animation, filmmakers Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman are bringing Loving, Vincent, which is animated to look like a painting by Vincent Van Gogh, whose life it recounts.
Rounding out the main lineup are: Arthur Miller: Writer, directed by his daughter, Rebecca Miller; Christopher Quinn’s doc Eating Animals, based on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer; the legendary Agnes Varda’s latest film, Faces Places; Sebastian Lelio’s A Fantastic Woman; Samuel Maoz’s Foxtrot; Rezo Gigineishvili’s Hostages; Ai Weiwei’s Human Flow; Ziad Doueiri’s The Insult; Camille Magid’s Land of the Free; Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Loveless; Mohammad Rasoulof’s A Man of Integrity; Aki Kaurismaki’s The Other Side of Hope; Chloe Zhao’s The Rider; and Kantemir Balagov’s Tenota.
Documentary filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer (The Act of Killing) is serving as guest director and has selected the following titles: Werner Herzog’s Even Dwarfs Started Small; Jon Bang Carlsen’s Hotel of the Stars; Charles Laughton’s The Night of the Hunter; Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s Salam Cinema; Frederick Wiseman’s Titicut Follies; and Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.
In addition to Cotton Club Encore, other restorations and revivals will include Marcel Pagnol’s The Baker’s Wife, Aleksander Volkoff’s Kean, or Disorder and Genius and Carl Junghan’s Such Is Life.
The fest’s Backlot sidebar, which focuses on films about movie and artists, includes: Sophie Bassaler’s Cinema Through the Eye of Magnum, Tony Zierra’s Filmworker, Rudiger Suchsland’s Hitler’s Hollywood, Michael Weatherly’s Jamaica Man, Volker Schlondorff’s Portrait of Valeska Gert, Stacey Steers’ Edge of Alchemy, Anthony Wall’s Slim Gaillard’s Civilisation and Goran Hugo Olsson’s That Summer.
