Francesco Gerbaldo: How was W.I.T.C.H. created? From where did the decision to make new characters - instead of using, for example, the already-famous Paperinik characters, with a long-established canon - come from?

Francesco Artibani: The project was already mostly developed by the time of my arrival, but it was far from its finished version. In the first rough draft I saw, the comic had not only the five main characters, but also Paperina alongside them. [Alessandro] Barbucci’s characters were so lively and engaging, however, that they easily supported a story all by themselves. The idea that Disney was pursuing was publishing a comic that would reach a female audience (a huge audience that was largely ignored at this point) but the final comic ended up reining in a sizable readership of boys, as well. It was a success story!

FG: You stopped writing W.I.T.C.H. in 2004, with your exit from Disney. The rumor is that someone at Disney was angered by your collaboration with Rainbow on Winx Club, going so far as to accuse you of “helping create” the Winx. What would you like to say on this 10 years later?

FA: Here is the truth: I stopped working with Disney because of the overall difficult atmosphere of the company in 2004. I was juggling Kylion, Monster Allergy, and W.I.T.C.H., and while I would never say that that time was wholly bad, it was a stressful period. Before beginning work on Winx, I informed the W.I.T.C.H. team that I was going to work on a series about girls with magical powers, and that I had been contacted by Rai - who knew me from my work on W.I.T.C.H. - in an effort to help develop Winx into its own, distinct series, and to prevent too many unintentional similarities between Winx and the Disney comic. Initially Disney agreed with my decision but the instant success of Winx was impossible to ignore. Disney tried to stop the production of Winx through a lawsuit and simultaneously Barbucci and [Barbara] Canepa sued Disney for creative and legal freedom over the W.I.T.C.H. series, but they were unsuccessful. I supported Barbucci and Canepa through their legal ordeal and, given the heavy circumstances, I decided to voluntarily leave the W.I.T.C.H. crew. I wish to stress here - my departure was entirely of my own volition and no one formally accused me of stealing or plagiarizing W.I.T.C.H. because the series were in development at the same time, independent of one another; the production timeline of a comic and of a television series are so different from one another. Both were born from the worldwide influence of Sailor Moon and Harry Potter, which is the source of any and all similarities they may have.

I left Disney peacefully and dedicated myself to other projects until, six years later, Valentina De Poli invited me back. If I had been a thief or a plagiarist no one would have welcomed me back to Disney, as they are very strict on those matters. I came back willingly because I still had such a strong connection to the characters I had once written, and that is the truth of the matter. A few people (some colleagues, I’ll even say) have needlessly wallowed in the affair for the sake of gossip but that’s just how it is.
