if you're taking requests, could i politely beg you for some Sasuke head *ahem* canons please 😫🥵😮💨 sfw or nsfw totally up to you... the way you write these Uchiha fellas is just damn perfect!! 🫶🏻 💐 💗
Nonny!!! You are officially my very first Sasuke-kun request!! I can't believe the day has finally arrived!!! Let's dissect this man to the fullest capacity, shall we?
Politely beg all you want, Sasuke couldn't care less. In fact, you'll get more out of him if you bitch a little. Not much, but enough (lol you clever slut, my gentle mind just got what you meant by 'Sasuke head *ahem* canons).
I also appreciate your praise!! I'm am merely just a vessel, spreading Lord Indra's will. Every single one of these fine ass men deserved better!!!
N/SFW; Sasuke-kun, please come back; bit of a weird AU here; just go with it
Sasuke, as we all know. Was the shadow throughout most of his childhood in the eyes of his father. His older brother took first place in many aspects of his traumatic life. I secretly feel like he wouldn't have liked being the favorite anyways.
He's so emotionally stunted, it's rather sad and embarrassing to him. Aside from the mostly 'brotherly' affection Itachi gave him and friendships of the few around him. Sasuke doesn't take kindly to your admission of want. Or belligerent desire as he calls it.
He doesn't really accept that he's taken an unavoidable liking to you either very well. Pity, really. Ask just about any Uchiha, catching feelings is like having the world's worst cold. So, Sasuke avoids you like the damn plague, but you're secretly on his mind. Which still pisses him off.
Gets so damn jealous if any other Uchiha talks to you. He knows how his family is. Especially his fucking cousin, Shisui. Despite his best efforts, Sasuke will never live this down. The moment you met, he knew you were his. Case in point. (Plus, Shisui only got your attention to prove a point to Sasuke, that his little cousin does want you.)
Dates, are not his style, but goes out of his comfort zone to hopefully garner your affections. The more he thinks of you, the harder it becomes to ignore these whims and feelings. That and your first 'date' wasn't entirely romantic or appropriate. Having his, 'emotional support fox' follow you from a distance was off putting. And creepy.
So here you are, Sasuke standing outside your door. Not capable of coping that his body is acting of its own volition. He's so on and off with his emotions. Can't decide if he is coming or going.
But in all honesty, he's very partial to coming in your mouth. Holy gods, yea. Doesn't even remember how it all led up to your gorgeous lips around the base of this cock as his hot seed slips down the back of your throat. Sasuke was so damn at war with himself that his body was on autopilot making all the decisions.
Could he really complain? Yea, probably. Though he doesn't, seeing you pop off his cock slow and cute as his cum drips a little down your bottom lip is more than enough to acquiesce his bitter mood. Cures it basically.
Makes it all the easier for him to just give in and push you flat onto the couch. A little more rough than intended, but you moan and writhe all the same. Even more so as the warmth of his mouth and tongue lavish you in a particularly primal way. Makes you question his virginal status, but not wanting to ruin the flow and your orgasm on his face. You leave it unsaid. The Uchiha are renowned geniuses, and the rinnegan really is the best at its craft. Ten times more powerful than the sharingan, its a no brainer that he holds all that raw power in the blink of an eye. Which was wielded to make you cum twice over again.
Heavy petting and lip service is what you get for the time being, I don't want top break your heart, but Sasuke is still heavily guarded...until the next time perhaps.

Yo.
I lied again.
So, I thought of this when I saw a post of an “AU?” for Animal Crossing.
Basically Redd is a good and nice fox, and not the con-artist that he is known for.
I decided to make an AU for Animal Crossing.
Why? Why not.
I don’t know a lot about the series, so I’ll stick with New Horizons for now.
Before you keep reading, some warnings:
1. Feedback, corrections and more ideas are greatly appreciated.
2. I’ll do a couple of head canons. I might add more as time goes by.
3. If you don’t like any of this ideas, well, I’m not sorry- Nah, joking. Tell me your reasons and the changes you would do.
4. I will do some extreme changes. From the objective of the game, some mechanics and characters, etc.
That’s it. Enjoy I guess.
* The Animal Crossing series focuses more on developing a goal and trying to work with the obstacles that might come your way.
* In New Horizons you have your own island that was “gifted” to you and must be developed to become a sustainable and good place to live for your villagers. This includes having shops, schools, police station, workplaces, etc. Like building your own city.
Mechanics:
* The player must build and set each building and any extra decoration they might want on their own, just like in the original game. They can also terraform.
* DIY exists but they can only be made by your villagers. For this you must ask them, (sometimes) give them the items to craft and (if your friendship level is too low) make a task for them beforehand so they are willing to make them for you.
* If you don’t have the items you can go to the shop and buy it, but it will cost you bells.
* You can grow trees, flowers, fruits, etc., on your own.
* The fruits and vegetables can be used to make dishes that you can eat or give them to your villagers to increase your friendship level.
* Flowers and anything that you purchase can be used as a gift.
NPCs (oh boy...):
* Blathers runs the museum in your town. He is relatively normal, but he hates anything that has to do with fish but loves bugs (surprising, I know). You can also give him flowers, vegetables, fruits and even trees (he will give you some data about it). If you give him art he will accept it unless is hunted.
* Redd is the main vendor in your island. He likes making silly jokes and will buy anything that you give him (even hunted artwork, but he will be sad). Always has a relax expression in his face and is willing to give you tips about what to do and how to progress in your island.
* Tom Nook, Timmy and Tommy are the “troublemakers” in your island. They will arrive and place their tent somewhere randomly and will start to take the decoration and move it to different locations, destroy your trees, crops, flowers, etc., vandalize your buildings, make your villagers angry, etc. You can buy art and some artifacts from them, but the art could be hunted (never fake, in Tom Nook words’s he has “way too much pride to go as low as that!”) and might be overpriced.
* I don’t know about Isabelle.
*The able sisters basically switch roles. That’s it. Ah, but Label is in a bad relationship with her sisters and it will be the player’s decision to help them or not (this will affect the gameplay) and their parents are alive! They send letters every other day.
* The dodo brothers (can’t remember their names) send and deliver letters. The dodo airlines is now a post office.
* The pelicans trio (can’t remember them either) run an airline now. One is the pilot, the other is the receptionist and maybe the third will tell you about the island you are send to or something like that.
* Flick and CJ also switch roles. Try to think that their personalities and color pallets are switched but their outfits stay the same (they might have some changes as well). Also, Flick is still an artist, but he loves fish and bugs not-so-much.
* Daisy Mae is the one who sells turnips. No change. She might have a different personality and outfit, but that’s it.
Villagers:
* You can talk to your villagers, send letters and gifts, do tasks for them, etc. Not much changes.
* The male villagers personalities can be Normal, Peppy, Brotherly(?)/Uchi and Snooty.
* The female villagers personalities can be Smug, Jock, Cranky and Lazy.
* Their names and faces don’t really change, as well as their color. But their outfits can.
* The villagers tend to be a bit passive-aggressive, especially the “pretty ones” (Marshal, Merengue, Raymond). But the most kind and sweet are the “ugly villagers” (Barold).
* The villagers are the only ones that can craft and depending on their personalities and your level of friendship with them you might have to give them the items to craft, wait more or less and do a task for them.
This is all for now.
I might add more details and even more characters but this is all for now.
Thanks for reading and “enjoying”? Maybe?
See you next time.

Okay so I have an anime crossover issue:
I am watching and LOVING the Fruits Basket reboot. And I am also a long-time lover of OHSHC. And it occurred to me that, while crossovers are often very cringey, the opportunities between these two shows, if handled correctly, work like a dream. And there ARE plenty of FBxOHSHC fanfics out there.
The problem?
Hardly any of them seem to take proper advantage of the opportunities presented. The largest percentage of fic I’ve seen can be placed into one of two camps: “look at my OC she’s the secret 14th zodiac member and she goes to Ouran” or “Haruhi is actually a sohma and the secret 14th Zodiac member”
First off: look—there is no wolf in the Chinese zodiac. There is no fox, or raven, or jaguar, or—just, stop.
Second of all, there’s plenty of new ways to play with this crossover concept that are lots of fun to read—because they don’t have to change the rules of either universe!
(also, why do the Sohmas always have to go to Ouran? Can’t it be the other way around? I’m just saying, as sweet as Tohru is, she is canonically nowhere close to winning any sort of scholarship to attend school at Ouran, even if the sohma boys do.)
Imagine, if you will, some of the following scenarios:
Tamaki, in one of his usual bids for host club bonding and commoner research, arrange for the host club to attend a commoner high school for a month. In order to convince Kyoya to come with, Tamaki specifically chooses a high school that is attended by members of the influential-yet-hermit-level-elusive Sohma family. Once they’re there, of course, Tamaki wastes no time establishing a place for the host club to continue their activities, because beauty must be shared with the world, of course!!! From there, imagine some of these scenarios:
1: Tamaki hears of the school’s Prince, and seeks out Yuki in order to induct (or, more accurately, abduct) him into the Host Club whether he likes it or not. (On that note, imagine how the Prince Yuki fan club might react to the Host Club’s presence).
2: Contrariwise, Tamaki knows of the Prince, but is more interested in the school’s aloof Tsudere Type, Kyo. Cue Kyo being incredibly angry and flustered as Tamaki and the twins keep kidnapping him to try and induct him. Possibly include Tamaki noticing kyo’s feelings for Tohru and deciding to coach him on how to be a true gentleman.
3: Imagine Shigure’s reaction to EITHER of those events.
4: in a different or perhaps related chain of events, imagine Tamaki meeting Ayame, essentially adopting him as his senpai, and the learning about his estranged relationship with Yuki. The Tamaki Suoh we know would immediately commence Operation Brotherly Reconciliation before you could blink.
5: imagine after establishing the Commoner High School Host Club, Momiji decides this looks fun and wants to hang out there. They don’t take him on as a host, since they already have Hunny, but he’s still happy to have made a bunch of new friends! And the best part is!!! They’re all guys!!!! And they’re (almost) all emotionally available!!! Which means he can hug them without restraint!!! He hugs Hunny! He hugs Tamaki!!! He thinks about hugging Kyoya but second guesses himself!!! He hugs Haruh—wait.
6: immediately after point number 5, Kyo and Yuki are rapidly switching between panicked and confused. While Yuki and Haruhi are basically Spider-Man-pointing at each other saying “Explain????” Kyo does one of two things:
7: he blurts out something relevant but woefully poorly contexted to Haruhi like “WAIT HOLD ON TAKE OFF YOUR SHIRT.” Which elicits a violent reaction from the twins/Tamaki which is headed off by Kyoya/Mori.
8: he grabs Momiji and starts shaking and yelling at him for being stupid and Hunny’s affection for a) his new friend and b) cute bunnies translates into him twisting Kyo’s arm or otherwise kicking his butt to take Momiji away from him because remember, kids! “picking on [Hunny’s] friends is a no-no!”
9: Kyo is dumbstruck because wait this twerp knows martial arts? Cue a running joke/side arc throughout the story in which Kyo keeps trying to get Hunny to fight him because getting beaten up by a twerp is stupidly emasculating and Kyo needs to win back his pride. Meanwhile Hunny sees no reason to fight or indulge Kyo and keeps refusing him (you know..because he’s actually a mature 18 year old). The arc may end in Kyo learning to humble himself and asking Hunny if he could maybe teach him some moves? Followed by Hunny beaming at him and saying yes.
10: how would Kyoya react if he were to learn the Sohma secret? How would he negotiate with the Sohma family? Could he? What stops Hatori from wiping their memories, if anything?
11: How would HARUHI react? Miss “Believes in nothing paranormal?” How would Tamaki react? As the King of Sticking His Nose Into Your Business, he may attempt to make it his mission to break the curse. (Of course, he fails in the end, but they all become friends anyway.)
OR, perhaps they don’t even need to go to the same school at all. Imagine this:
1: Kyoya, in preparation for running some of his family’s hospitals, or perhaps as part of a special inspection, or a possible acquisition, or whatever else, visits a hospital owned by the Sohmas
(Listen, we know that the sohma’s HAVE to own at least one hospital. Preparations for any possible Zodiac birth would have to be EXTENSIVE. Imagine if they’re anticipating a new Dragon? All Sohma women are now compelled to have water births. Why? BECAUSE SCIENCE SAYS SO, SHUT UP, WE’RE DOCTORS. Once the new Dragon’s been born? NEVERMIND NO MORE WATERBIRTHS DONT ASK QUESTIONS. They have veterinarians on call who never really know for sure why they’re paid to just keep a special phone on them, but one day they’re called into a human hospital and forced to sign a huge stack of NDA’s before being brought to a delivery room. One day when he’s training his replacement the kid asks “hey why are you making me read about how to care for baby seahorses?” And the older doctor gets faraway flashback eyes, shakes his head and says “just keep reading, son.” I could honestly go on. I would read an entire fic just about the people working at one of these hospitals.)
Anyway, Kyoya is at the Sohma hospital when something curse related happens. You can honestly pick. Either way, Kyoya goes through an interesting spiral:
2: first, after getting himself the fuck out of there as soon as Hatori’s eyes are off of him, he has a barely-self contained nervous breakdown the minute he gets himself alone in his room because the idea of Kyoya instantly accepting anything remotely fantastical is ridiculous. His friends are worried about him but have no idea what happened because if Kyoya vocalizes it, that means it’s real!!!! And he!!! Just can’t!!! Also, he REALLY doesn’t need the twins teasing him and calling him insane or Haruhi asking if he has a fever.
3: then, after he collects himself, he begins doing his Kyoya thing and collecting information. Obviously a condition (he refuses to call it a curse) with such a easily exploitable trigger couldn’t have been kept a secret for so long. So the Sohma’s are keeping people quiet somehow. There isn’t any history of people disappearing around the sohma’s, so it’s either money, threats, or induced amnesia. So, of course, Kyoya prepares for all three. (Of course, even if they WANTED to kidnap or kill Kyoya, his connection to the Ootori family and its extensive police force would prevent that.)
4: and still, even if this curse idea is utterly ridiculous—and it is—this is the biggest piece of negotiation material Kyoya has ever acquired, and its on the SOHMAS. The one family that almost never deals with anyone. With the sohma’s being such a powerful yet reclusive family, he’s not about to let such a large chip go that easily.
5: cue a delightful mental cat-and-mouse game between Kyoya, Hatori, and eventually Akito. Akito getting involved means Shigure is definitely involved as well, if he isn’t already after Hatori.
6: Akito, being a very impatient person, wants Kyoya either hypnotized or under their thumb YESTERDAY. But he knows he can’t just bring him to the house without raising many important eyebrows. So what is he to do to get Kyoya to cooperate?
7: they could go for the heart, perhaps. Kyoya’s best friend Suoh seems stupid enough. Akito begins to charm Tamaki (who Kyoya has not informed of the curse) and establish a sort of power play in front of Kyoya—“see, he likes me, I can get him to go anywhere I want.”
8: Contrariwise, Akito decides they can’t target his best friend Suoh for the same reasons he can’t target Kyoya. Oh, but...look here. A commoner named Fujioka with no money or status, hardly any family....he’ll do fine.
7: if Tamaki gets in a room alone with Akito, the dynamic could get interesting. After Akito turns scary, Tamaki might take a bit of a beating, but then (as the bighearted and surprisingly wise person he is) he starts talking to Akito, and trying to genuinely connect with him. Whether this works or not would be up to the author.
8: If Haruhi was in a room alone with Akito, presumably brought against her will, she would probably be confused and annoyed, but eventually a little frightened and out of her depth (Akito tends to have that effect on people). But she would also piss Akito off VERY fast, with how observant yet practical and blunt she is. She would say some things that hit Akito hard, and she would probably be attacked fairly quickly. Shigure or Hatori would have to step in to protect her, and perhaps SHE learns about the curse in the process.
Honestly, it could go many different ways. But basically I wanted to demonstrate how Fruits Basket/OHSHC crossovers could be much more unique and interesting with fascinating character dynamics, whether the story is a comedy or a drama. Then, as a few honorable mentions:
Everyone compares Haruhi and Tohru’s Mom situation. But how would Haruhi react if she learned Momiji’s situation?
The twins harassing Kyo. Or, the twins harassing Haru and triggering Black Haru.
Tamaki charming Tohru and poor Tohru not knowing how to react (and Yuki and Kyo getting Very Frustrated.)
Shigure and Tamaki becoming friends because of course they would.
Shigure and RANKA becoming friends because OF COURSE THEY WOULD.
Ranka being a regular at Ayame’s store.
Etc etc etc. and that’s with just the more major characters. Hanajima and Uotani interacting with the host club would also be hilarious.
Anyway, point’s made—Fruits Basket and Host Club are fantastic crossover material, and deserve more unique content!!!

MapleStory - Okami AU
What else could one expect of me, really. But I’ve actually had this little idea stewing around in my head for years now, but never got past some (hella old and subpar) sketches to actually draw it out. But I’ve been in an art slump for a while now and decided, ‘to heck with this. I’m drawing indulgent ideas and no one can stop me.’
And boy was it therapeutic. And fun! And my anger that this huge ass file won’t display properly is boundless.
Full size solo pics under cut, plus my ramblings
The Heroes taking the place of the Satomi Canine Warriors is where this idea initially sprung up from, but a couple of other roles got fitted in as the years passed, most notably Beta taking Amaterasu’s place, and Alpha taking Oki’s (might draw them later too). The canine warriors also play a much larger role in this au than in okami, since I really liked them and was sad only three of them really did anything. 8′D so without further ado
"'Tei' stands for 'brotherhood'. Brotherly affection breeds understanding. It allows us to be ourselves and accept our fate."
Freud is the leader of the Maple Canine Heroes, holder of the Brotherhood Orb, and the only hero remaining with Princess Cygnus by the time Beta awakens. After the previous priestess, Aria, is killed by the demons that infiltrate the Ereve Shrine, the group broke up in order to train/take care of personal affairs. Freud remains to guard Cygnus and the village, awaiting the day his friends gather again...
"'Chu' stands for 'loyalty'. To give one's whole life for the good of one's master...To focus on the goal with all of one's concentration..."
Mercedes is the holder of the Loyalty Orb, and the dedicated queen of a small group of peaceful fox spirits that dwell in Elluel Sanctuary. The growing number of demons in the wake of the Dark Lord’s return threatens the peaceful way of life in the sanctuary, forcing Mercedes to remain to stave them off. But the call of her friends can’t be ignored, especially when another nine-tailed fox appears, invading the dreams of the people outside the sanctuary...
"'Rei' stands for 'honor'. Honor calls for careful moderation when dealing with others. If we lose this sense, we rush headlong into chaos."
Holder of the Honor Orb and the strongest of the heroes, Aran has traveled the farthest of any in her quest to become stronger, as far as the frozen lands of El Nath to the north. However, though the direwolf has returned to the land of Maple, something is amiss. She seems to have no recollection of her comrades or goals, wandering Lith Coast. But she is still driven forward by something, a nagging desire to become stronger, the idea that somewhere in this land there are people who need her...
"'Jin' stands for 'justice'. To show compassion to both the living and the dead...To care enough to give one's own life in service..."
After the death of the priestess he so loved, the holder of the Justice Orb was the first to leave, determined to grow strong enough to avenge Aria’s death. He scours Victoria City, hunting the demons attracted by the sickness that plagues the area. Grief has sharpened his loneliness, but though he misses the other heroes, he masks it with a charming smile, for he is determined to take vengeance on his own terms...
"'Chi' stands for 'knowledge'. Knowledge is useless without deep reflection. This reflection is essential in the pursuit of understanding."
Living humbly in Ellinia Village with young Lania under the name of ‘White’, Luminous reveals himself to be the holder of the Knowledge Orb. On his travels, he bared witness to (or perhaps, caused...?) the attack that would kill the real White. As he lay dying, he imparted on Luminous the vision he’d had, of Lania being killed by an arrow during the village festival on the night of the full moon, and begs Luminous to protect her in his stead. Determined to redeem himself and fulfill White’s dying wish, Luminous takes his place in the village, postponing his return to the other heroes, waiting for the chance to change Lania’s fate...
"'Ko' stands for 'wisdom'. True wisdom is that passed on from one's parents and grandparents. Rely on those who came before to show you the way in all things."
The newest and youngest addition to the heroes, Evan is the holder of the Wisdom Orb. He and Mir are best friends and battle partners, and were sent back to their family in Henesys Pass to train in relative safety. Despite his youth, he learns quickly, and strives to make the other heroes proud. Determined to prove his training has paid off, he joins Beta in rounding up the heroes. Unknown to the others, Freud has been training Evan to take his place as leader one day...
"'Shin' stands for 'faith'. Faith flows from an open heart and is exchanged between friends. It is the root of our convictions and guides us to our goals."
Having inherited the Faith Orb from his father after his death, Mir is determined to help Evan and the heroes in their battle against evil forces. Despite his naivety, it is his steadfast (if stubborn) belief that they are destined to become heroes and win that has kept Evan’s spirits up and driven them ever closer to their goal. He will make his father proud...
"'Gi' stands for 'duty'. To remain firm in one's duties in each and every aspect of life...Bravery and duty go hand in hand. Bravery shows one what is right. The greatest form of bravery is that born from a sense of duty."
Last but certainly not least is the holder of the Duty Orb, EunWol, who dwells in Ellin Forest with Lang after the girl saved his life some time past after a particularly difficult battle. Though he knows his friends call to gather, he is indebted to Lang and worries that without him, the headstrong girl will soon bite off more than she can chew. His fears seem to be justified, for when the two go exploring the Vulpes Ruins at Lang’s insistence, they find the ruins are not quite so empty as previously thought...

NYFF 2018: Divide and Conquer, What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?, Film Noir Revivals
by Odie Henderson
October 5, 2018 |
Print Page Tweet
One can usually find a few hidden gems in the New York Film Festival Documentary section. This year brings such varied topics as “American Dharma,” Errol Morris’ take on Steve Bannon and “Divide and Conquer,” Alexis Bloom’s exploration of the life of the creator of both MSNBC and Fox News. Subtitled “The Story of Roger Ailes,” Bloom’s fair and balanced film is an often harrowing look at the man directly responsible for the elections of Richard Nixon, George H. W. Bush and that current guy in the White House. Ailes media savvy, which was admittedly brilliant and probably unmatchable, made him a political kingmaker whose reach is still affecting us even after his death in 2017.
“When I go, people are going to say awful things about me,” reads one Ailes quote cited here, along with another that pretty much sums up the philosophy of the current political climate: “If the audience likes you enough, they will forgive you for anything you do wrong.” It’s this kind of media manipulation that Ailes strove for throughout his career. One former Fox News anchor says the network’s main goal was to “rile up the crazies” by keeping them in a state of constant anger and false victimization. The angrier people are, the more glued to the TV they’ll be. And if the message is coming from someone with whom the viewers can identify, they’ll watch every day and the money will just pour into the pockets of Ailes and his boss, Rupert Murdoch.
Bloom interviews several people, some of whom are surprising talking heads. We learn that Austin Pendleton was Ailes’ middle school classmate back in Warren, Ohio. Pendleton gives one of the few portraits of Ailes that doesn’t include his professional life. On that side of the equation, we’ll hear from John Cook, Glenn Beck and former Fox News journalist Alisyn Camerota, who is now on CNN. We’ll see enough clips from Fox News to own the libs (I cop to wanting to pull my eyes out), but Bloom also informs us that Ailes’ first network venture, America First, was eventually taken over and purchased by Bill Gates and rechristened MSNBC. It’s hinted that this coup was the reason Ailes created Fox News.
Bloom also covers the sexual harassment lawsuits and claims that got Ailes kicked out of the kingdom he created. This section is particularly harrowing in the age of Time’s Up and MeToo, culminating in a credible claim that Ailes’ ouster was the first example of someone getting their just desserts as a result of these movements. While Bloom doesn’t interview Gretchen Carlson or Megyn Kelly, she does show several other women who had tales of how rebuffing Ailes’ sexual advances was grounds for him to ruin their careers. Each woman’s pain is vividly on display, even if the harassment happened decades ago.
“Divide and Conquer” shows how Ailes’ tactics and philosophies are still in effect after his demise. We can see and hear it in the GOP Congress members, their constituents and their president, who gets the last word in this film. If you want to get a feel for why the political climate is the way it is now, this portrait of a mad genius is a must-see.
Speaking of Fox News and Megyn Kelly, I recall their warped, overripe coverage of the New Black Panther Party, which was supposed to have been beating up White people who were trying to vote back in 2012. A far more truthful portrayal of a Mississippi branch of the group can be found in Roberto Minervini’s documentary “What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?” Shot in sometimes harsh black and white, Minervini’s camera also observes the camaraderie between two brothers named Ronaldo and Titus as well as chronicles the exploits of Judy Hill, a recovering addict and singer who runs a bar in New Orleans.
As the original Black Panthers did, the New Black Panther party is shown educating people about Black history, feeding homeless people and protesting the police shootings of unarmed Black men. The NBP crew features Krystal Muhammad, a fearless spokesperson who is investigating brutal hate crimes and murders during the film. The group explains its mission for viewers, but we can also deduce what they’re goals are just by watching them interact with the neighborhood. Their protests ultimately lead to a confrontation with the police, which Minervini unflinchingly records for posterity.
Minervini supplements the New Black Panthers’ story with scenes involving the brothers and their mother and Judy’s time in the bar. The film is comfortable just letting its subjects talk and tell their stories, with several standout scenes for all involved. Judy has an excellent scene sharing her story with current addicts, and the brotherly scenes will intrigue and touch anyone who’s ever had a brother. At 123 minutes, “What You Gonna Do When the World’s On Fire” becomes a tad redundant as it plays out, and more than once I felt that Minervini’s gaze made his subjects out to be Others. Still, this is an important film about Black life, a good companion piece to the superior “Hale County This Morning, This Evening.”

Since I am the resident film noir addict, I signed up for two restorations playing in NYFF’s Revivals section. The more obscure of the two, 1947’s “The Red House” stars Edward G. Robinson as Pete Morgan, a man with big, nasty secrets that are slowly driving him insane. His sister Ellen (Dame Judith Anderson) has given up a chance at romantic happiness with the town doctor so that she may keep Pete in check and help raise his ward, Meg (Allene Roberts). The Morgan farm is off-limits to the townsfolk, most of whom think the family is too creepy for company.
That changes when Pete asks Meg to invite high school hunk Nath (Lon McCallister) to do some paid chores for him. Meg harbors a secret crush on Nath, but he’s already beholden to the town’s drop-dead gorgeous firebrand Tibby (a deliciously fierce and nasty Julie London). Tibby is the type of bad girl whose never worth the trouble but always worth the time. She thinks Meg is way too homely to take her man, but that doesn’t stop her from throwing major shade at our heroine.
Out of curiosity, and despite Tibby’s objections, Nath accepts Meg’s work offer. Alas, curiosity is the last thing Pete wants running rampant on his farm, especially when it concerns the mysterious red house hidden deep in an even more mysterious and forbidden patch of woods. When Nath mentions he’ll be cutting through those woods as a shortcut to shave an hour off his walk home, Pete goes bonkers. He demands Nath avoid these woods, as they are haunted and potentially deadly. Veteran director Delmar Daves lets us think Pete has a point by staging a scary encounter that leaves Nath mildly injured.
Neither the woods nor the red house turns out to be literally haunted. But that doesn’t mean that evil forces aren’t present throughout “The Red House,” starting with Pete’s consuming obsessions and branching out to the actions of the sleazy, sexy guardian of Pete’s land, Teller (Rory Calhoun). What happened in the titular house is warped enough for the best of gothic tales. Daves appends these elements with the typical noir ingredients of murder, jealousy, madness, guilt, sex and sin.
“The Red House” is gorgeously shot in black and white by Bert Glennon, whose images are almost Lynchian at times. Merrill White’s editing is masterful—watch for the companion shot that precedes Pete snuffing out a candle with his hand—and Daves’ direction is tight and edgy. Plus, Edward G. Robinson gets a visual send-off that’s simultaneously beautiful and horrifying. Robinson plays it to the hilt, too, succumbing to his fate with more relief than the average noir victim gets to display.

Edgar G. Ulmer’s legendary 1945 classic, “Detour” also gets a much needed restoration, as it has only existed in very poor, scratchy prints that were practically unwatchable. According to the NYFF catalog blurb, this new print is approved by Martin Scorsese himself. As I will not have seen the restored version before press time, I can only speak to the film itself at this moment. A staple of the noir genre, this is a nasty, brutish and short piece of work, clocking in at 68 minutes and proudly displaying its Poverty Row studio origins.
Tom Neal plays Al, a down on his luck drifter who narrates the tale. Before bad luck befell him, he was a virtuoso jazz piano player madly in love with blonde singer Sue Harvey (Claudia Drake). Sue decides to motor west so she can try her luck in Hollywood, leaving Al to follow her once he gets enough dough. But Sue’s not this film’s dangerous woman. That role goes to tough-as-nails Ann Savage, whose Vera doesn’t enter the picture until halfway through its runtime. Savage makes the most of her screen time, spitting her pitch black barbs of dialogue at Al while blackmailing him for a murder he didn’t commit even though he disposed of the dead body. And while it may seem that Vera’s the femme fatale, she’s actually upstaged by fate itself, whose nasty twists prove to Al who the real villain is. After all, you can’t spell fatale without fate.
