closure ! max v. x ofc (hearth sister!ofc)
“it wasn't right—the way it all went down. looks like you know that now.”
summary: sylvie just wanted to prove that she was good enough for the red bull racing team, but everything that had to do with her history with max seemed to get in the way of her determination— and she made sure that he knew that.
content warning: panic attack (and its triggers), use of explicit language, mentions of absent father figure, j*s verst*ppen đŸ€ą, christian horner, frenemies to lovers (ish), confrontational text messages (max and sylvie), max being oblivious to her mental state, mentions of max’s childhood (not detailed)
note: as someone who struggled to find peace at certain situations, I know what it’s like to struggle in asking for help. please remember that there are people that are more than willing to give you the support that you need.
(i may not be able to update any of the smau works for the next two weeks as i am out of town and i only have my ipad with me. i normally do the layouts on my computer. i’ll try my best!)
enjoy xx
masterlist
2016 Spanish GP
If fate worked like this all the time, she might as well jump off the cliff if any of her peers asked for it.
She had been pulled out of her lectures for the week only for her to sit and watch how the racing teams operated. She could only roll her eyes when Christian Horner recommended she should have her presence be known in the paddock and the track as she prepared to work in an F1 team.
Sylvie already knew how everything worked; she was going to be a driver, for fuck’s sake. She had been trained for it. She grew up attending the race weekends because of her father and grandparents. She knew everything now. Hell, she even had Toto Wolff for an in-law (practically). He could just rerun everything to her if she needed to remember.
Christian Horner clearly had a different intention towards her visit. He claimed that she needed to relive the experiences in the garage, the media pit and the hospitality. But she knew the truth.
She had a rapport, her history in the academy was obviously discussed to Christian at some point. How Christian never mentioned anything about her departure from the program to her sister, who now held parts of Red Bull and the other two teams, she never had an answer for. It wasn’t a secret to most. At least to those who were there the day she left.
Tilly was in the Mercedes area, leaving her little sister in the Red Bull hospitality as she listened to nothing. She felt so alone and isolated, her urge to go to Mercedes was overwhelming. But it wasn’t as if she could; Christian had already told her off about her role and position in the company.
It didn’t help that Max Verstappen, donning his number 33 shirt, was in the same building. He was quite adamant on keeping her company but she constantly avoided him, slipping out of his sight as soon as his eyes settled on her.
She found excuses, most of which had something to do with Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian hadn’t minded though, knowing that she felt uncomfortable being around other people especially around Max. Daniel never minded her excuses, instead making up a lie that’s believable to others. Just so she could escape.
Max’s family was there that weekend. Obviously, she knew his mother and Victoria, his sister. Max and Sylvie, the two 18 year olds, were practically soul twins. Born on the same day, grew up together, and had been attached to the hips since the day they could crawl— they were friends, no one just knew what had happened. His mother had always asked Sylvie’s mum about her and how she’d managed to let her friendship with Max dissipate like that. Victoria missed having Sylvie over for tea whenever she visited the Netherlands, asking Max about what he had done to let Sylvie go like that.
Jos Verstappen was a different story. He never liked Sylvie, only holding a certain amount of respect for Julius Hearth and Blanche Ford Hearth. He always wanted Max to be successful at motorsport and this meant that nobody could be as equally good as his son. Not especially when Max’s ability matched Sylvie’s. He always claimed that hanging out with “that girl” will simply distract Max.
Even if he nodded at his father’s direction, Max continued to be friends with Sylvie, spending more time together whenever she and her family would fly and meet with his family.
At the ripe age of 12, Max admitted to her that she’s the closest thing that he had to an imaginary friend. Like he was forced to grow up before he could even walk. She was the one who would pull up the PlayStation whenever he failed to please his father for the tournament of that time. Jos never liked her, but he didn’t know exactly what could’ve made him dislike her. Sylvie didn’t like him, either, because she couldn’t believe that she was the one who’d have to give Max the childhood that he deserved. There are times when she wished she could simply spew out the foulest words and lump him with her own father. Well
she had already considered him a shitty father, and there’s no changing of opinion now.
So for Sylvie to see Jos in the paddock, basically keeping his eye on his son like a pestering hawk? Yeah, she turned away from their direction.
Then another group of people came, the same arrogant smile all over their faces. They taunted her.
She could remember her last week at the academy, when she had enough. These boys questioned her abilities on the track as soon as she started, trying to get her to quit as soon as she could. She didn’t care about them, because whenever they’d race she remained on the top of their level. They hated her because of it. Then on her last day, she was left to be called a name that didn’t even fit her

“Snake Sylvie!” Matt Bauer was what she called Max’s bitch. He never liked Sylvie and had always wanted to be in Max’s family’s good graces. Alongside him were Max’s two other friends. These three were the same incompetent fucks who never ended in Formula 2. Thus, ending their racing careers early. They were doing fuck knows what these days. Which was quite hilarious, if you were to ask Sylvie, because they were the ones who kept telling Max to “Keep working” or “toughen up and get the first place.”
She couldn’t remember their names when she met them again that weekend, her eyes were already blurry from the tears as she shoved her way through them. “Where are you going?! We’re just going to catch up, babe!”
She didn’t even stop, her feet speeding up as she attempted to wipe her tears away. Her lips let out a stutter of excuse me as she pushed her way into where the Mercedes garage was.
Second free practice didn’t start anytime soon and Sylvie was thankful for that. It, however, never stopped the camera by the engineering station from capturing the sounds of a sobbing girl and an image of her nearly soaked Red Bull shirt as she ran inside. Had she been stronger than this, she wouldn’t have ran to Toto.
As if he knew someone was coming his way, Toto Wolff immediately took his headphones off and turned. His face etched with worry as Sylvie wrapped her arms around his broad figure. She was hysterically sobbing and shaking, her tears almost soaking his white shirt as she kept her head tucked in his chest.
“Can we stop the camera? There’s an obvious situation going on in here and we need a moment,” Sylvie couldn’t hear his voice as it was something more of a rumbling noise. Meanwhile Toto’s stern expression made the cameraman do as he was told. “Hey, schwester, are you okay?”
She was relentless, sobbing as she kept her head down and her arms tightly wrapped around him. She couldn’t speak. Not breathe for that matter. It felt like the last day of the academy all over again. Having no voice felt like she was just as defenseless once more.
“Sylvie, do you want me to take you to your hospitality?” Her bloodshot red eyes, still tearing up, stared into his dark ones as her lips quivered and her head shook left and right. “Do you want your sister?”
Toto knew that the Mercedes hospitality was nearer to the Red Bull area than the Mercedes garage. So for her to go this far just for comfort
something told him that she didn’t want to stress out the pregnant woman and that she needed more than her sister.
He pursed his lips, feeling helpless as he kept an arm around her shoulder as they walked out of the garage. He nodded at his engineers as if he was letting them know about leaving for a moment.
He did his best at comforting her. Rubbed her back, shushing her quietly and gently leading her to the hospitality. People outdoors had gotten a glimpse of her situation and began to speculate, which forced her to hide her face once more as Toto glared at them.
“Come on, schatzi,” inside nobody had batted an eye on her. And instead of speculating, certain people merely looked at the two with concern. What the hell happened, they probably asked themselves.
She was too busy crying and hiding her face away that she hadn’t realized Tilly was already approaching the two. Sylvie didn’t look up until she heard, “What happened, bello?”
“She came to the garage,” Toto said quietly, looking down at his in-law with concern as he said, “she couldn’t say anything because she’s having a hard time breathing.”
“Oh, lovie,” Tilly whispered empathetically, her delicate figure reaching out to hug her little sister, “I’m sorry to hear that. Come, let’s sit down, yes?”
Sylvie could barely think throughout the process of moving from one place to another. They reached the Mercedes motorhome and found themselves in a private room, Sylvie’s lips were swollen and her tear-stained cheeks were red.
She wasn’t even aware that Toto left until his tall figure returned with two bottles of water in his hands. He simply placed it down on the empty table and exchanged looks with his girlfriend. They couldn’t even find a way to help her out of this.
“Listen, Sylvie,” the girl’s sobbing subsided for a moment as Toto said, “I will come back. Okay? I will check and make sure that you’re alright, but I have to go.”
“Yes, go,” Tilly nodded at him, “I’ll be here. Thank you for taking her to me, mon amour.”
“Alright, I’ll be back as soon as I can,” Toto murmured as he leaned down and pecked Tilly’s lips. “I love you.”
“And I love you,” Tilly smiled ruefully, her eyes trained on her little sister as Toto moved to stand and hug Sylvie. Sylvie could only hug his waist, not wanting to let go but had done so anyway.
“Take some time to breathe, lovie,” Toto said for the last time before he left hesitantly.
Nobody but the two were inside the motorhome, thankfully. Sylvie would be so embarrassed to cry in front of other people— as she had done so ten minutes ago. The silence was interrupted by Sylvie’s sobbing. Tilly couldn’t help but wrap her arm around Sylvie’s shoulders, trying to occupy as much space as a pregnant woman could. God, this was the only thing that she didn’t like about her pregnancy. She wasn’t able to comfort her sisters or anyone as much as she’d like to do.
The model couldn’t even think or try to let out a single word, only crying in her sister’s arms as she listened to her shushing. It didn’t take long until the tears dried up. Her energy drained from crying too much over some fuckers who couldn’t even make it to the podium. Them, and that one person would be able to do that on Sunday.
With exhaustion washing over her, her sniffles turned into something more silent as she shut her eyes. It didn’t take long for Tilly to notice this as she stood up, giving more space to the girl on the couch. “Get some rest, lovie,” Tilly said quietly, brushing Sylvie’s hair away as the girl drifted off to sleep.
She really didn’t like being here in Spain.
—
Argument just outside the motorhome was what had woken her up. It was normal to have frustrated drivers or team principals throw a bitch fit, but hearing an argument was a different story.
Her eyes stung from opening after her post-crying nap, her feet meeting the floor as she popped the lid of the bottle open, her parched body taking in the water that she swallowed.
She liked eavesdropping, she really did. She liked to provide her own input even if it’s not needed— she was nosey and everyone knew that. But what she had gone through just about an hour or so ago made her lose the energy and motivation to be her usual self.
It didn’t stop her from walking closer to the door and listening in to whatever argument was going on.
“She’s here to observe and work, she’s not here to spectate,” that was Christian Horner.
“But she’s not feeling well, Christian, she has to rest,” now that’s her favourite in-law. Not really in-law.
“Look, I get that you’re looking out for her but you have to understand,” Christian hissed, “she’ll be signing with Red Bull as soon as she graduates. I cannot have her working with the team if you’re constantly mollycoddling her just because you’re the closest that she has to a father figure. This is a professional work setting, Toto, and she needs to be disciplined to be a part of it.”
“Disciplined, in what way?” The sternness on Toto’s voice could kill, unless you’re just as stupid as Christian as Sylvie heard a scoff coming out of the Red Bull team principal’s mouth.
“Everybody’s going through tough times,” Christian said, “so what? Most of us are moving along anyways. Don’t treat her like a child and make exemptions. She’s never going to learn how to toughen up from it.”
“Hey!” Another voice rung out as the door opened slightly, making her step back as she heard an exclamation of, “That girl was distressed after she left your area— the place where she’s supposed to feel comfortable working in. It’s not her responsibility to bear the problems that are clearly happening within the area of your control, so don’t you tell us how to accommodate if you can barely take care of it. Alright?”
“Fuckin’ prick,” the door slammed shut as Sylvie’s figure remained frozen, her eyes watching as they met Lewis’ dark ones. He smiled gently and asked, “Hey. Are you feeling better now, sweetheart?”
She didn’t respond for a moment after she heard Toto say, “Just give it a rest. She’ll work on what she has to do, just let it go for now. Speak to Tilly, if you would like.”
“Don’t worry about them,” Lewis pulled her back to the couch and sat with her. He leaned back as he joked, “Lovers’ quarrel is what’s going on between the two.”
She chuckled quietly, unable to keep her facade. The laughter fell eventually as she muttered, “I didn’t mean to create such a scene. I’m sorry.”
“What? Hey, girl, no,” Lewis felt his heart break at her words as he reached and rubbed her shoulder for comfort. “Don’t be sorry for snapping. It’s brave of you to keep it together in the first place.”
“I really didn’t mean to make a big deal out of it,” her voice cracked as she tried not to cry. Thinking about it was exhausting and saddening. “It’s just— there’s—“
“It’s okay, take a deep breath,” Lewis told her softly. She did as she was told. Many would say that it’s a rare thing to happen but Sylvie listened.
“There’s just people,” Sylvie explained quietly, not looking at Lewis as she murmured, “I haven’t seen them for a while and
I felt so uneasy. Like it’s the final nail in the coffin. I didn’t want to make a big deal because it was at Red Bull. Nobody’s in there. Toto, you and Tilly are in Mercedes.”
“Sorry we couldn’t be there,” Lewis told her sympathetically. “But it’s a good idea that you went to the garage as quickly as you did. Now look, even Christian’s facing Toto’s wrath.”
“I don’t want to think about it anymore,” Sylvie whispered shakily, shutting her eyes close as she sighed, “I just want some closure.”
The next few days were dreadful. She hadn’t wanted to go back to England as much as she did that weekend.
The people she never wanted to see were there. The sad part of it was the fact that Max would continue to be a part of her life and job, whether she liked it or not. She’d have to tolerate him, no matter how much shit she had gone through because of him and those people around him. This was the second time she had seen him and felt so angry. It was like her life was a race. It starts out very well, with her at the pole. But then she crashes the moment she tries to take advantage and overtake.
On Sunday, Max landed in P1. Sylvie watched him pop the cork of the Moet out and showered his fellow podium winners with it. The text that she then received and sent spilled everything that had nothing to do with champagne. But rather explained how she ended up leaving the academy after that damn open tournament four years ago.
Max complains a lot, he could admit, but he never felt so guilty as much as he did when he practically berated her through a series of text messages. He always demanded answers to things that he believed had explanations, and he wouldn’t stop until he got it. But sometimes he wished his relentless demands were silenced by his conscience.
He felt extremely guilty and upset. It wasn’t because Sylvie Hearth refused to give in to his demands, but rather because her answers explained her hatred and anger. It wasn’t just any anger. It was an ounce of hatred and a lot of anger directed towards him.
Because really, he was the reason why Sylvie never turned out to be the first woman to become a Formula One driver. She never got the seat in Red Bull Racing and Max had gotten it instead. Now he understood why she would refuse to speak to or look at him as if they were childhood best friends and act like they were strangers.

Great to see Gravity Falls being popular again! I sure hope a certain pro-ship doesn’t become active once more!
Look, I ask for one simple thing. Reluctant parental Bill with reluctant children Mabel and Dipper.
Picture this:
One-sided Ford x Bill (maybe eventually mutual) where Bill comes back, scares the Pines family, and tries to court Stanford Pines once more(because he’s definitely done it before). He knows how protective both of the older pine twins are of the young ones. So, he sets off to do what he assumes would be the perfect way of courting Stanford Pines. Which is to parent the young twins who he tried to previously kill. Yay.
Really, I just need a story of Bill reluctantly bonding with Mabel and Dipper but ultimately failing to connect with them. Finally, he sits back and watches Ford and Stan with the kids, wondering why these stupid kid meat sacks don’t like him (it totally isn’t because he almost killed them). He sees the way Stan and Ford, while rough and rugged, are still gentle with the kids.
Stan has done hilariously dangerous things with the kids but at the end of the day, the two of them are still smiling and laughing. And Ford goes onto long intellectual lectures at times but he also slows down and repeats himself using simpler words for the children (and Stanley).
If anything is to be noteworthy, it’s the fact that while Stan and Ford love the kids equally, they connect with them differently.
Sure, Stan and Mabel are as thick as thieves. They love getting into mischief, scamming people out their money and using the grappling hook to escape from the cops. They tell jokes and laugh at each other, and Mabel is an excellent wingman for Stan.
But Stan also doesn’t mind sitting on the couch and watching his show while Dipper sits on the floor, scribbling in his book. He likes blurting out outlandish plot twists when they watch mystery movies and complains when Dipper tries to make him read a thriller book but secretly reads them at night.
Ford and Dipper get along like a house on fire. Dipper shows incredible skills when it comes to deciphering codes and secret messages. And he has the same knowledge as Ford when it came to the creatures of Gravity Falls (having been studying the journals). Ford loves including Dipper in his experiments.
But Ford also likes having Mabel with them. While her big imagination is seen as childish to most, for Ford (who has been in a different dimension filled with who-knows-what), her theories are often right. He likes hearing her ideas out, no matter how crazy they are. And he does love a good arts & crafts project. He lets Mabel teach him how to crotchet his own sweater.
If Bill was going to put himself into that family (for the sake of having Stanford Pines back) he was going to have to find his own way of caring for the younger twins.
But anyways, that’s all I wanted to share. I’ve always wanted parental! Bill with reluctant! Dipper and Mabel. And as someone who’s been in this fandom for nine years (I watched it in 2016) I’m hoping that I’ll get my wish soon. (If I do then please incorporate Trans! Dipper. It doesn’t even have to be a main focus thing, it’s just a very popular headcannon that’s been around for ages and it’s grown on me like a fungus)

billford
I really like billford in the way that it represents toxic and abusive relationships, and that the person being abused can escape and can have a ‘happily ever after’. However I’m seeing a surge of posts that are on the edge of romanticizing it or wanting to see bill and ford back together, wich I don’t love. Let’s not re-do 2016 guys

so Bill's bitterness towards Stan still has my mind in a vice grip so naturally I've been thinking about it a lot and I wanna key in on one specific part from the poem:
Tumblr media
It's been a theory since the show ended in 2016 that since Stan got his memories back Bill might be able to weasel his way back too, and although the book shows he's pretty well contained, the poem seems to imply this theory could be true in some way
But here's the thing, this is coming from Bill, Mr. "Even His Lies Are Lies". In the book of bill, he's shown being so desperate to escape he made the book in arts in crafts and just chucked it into the world hoping some sucker would take him up on his offer. Personally, I think if he could come back through Stan, he'd have done it by now
When you type in "on your mind" in the website, you get this:
youtube
It's hard to make out much but to me this just sounds like Stan having a good time, Ford probably not too far away. It doesn't sound like a guy who thinks too much about the freaky evil triangle man, I personally think Bill's just talking shit
.....or maybe I'm just enjoying the thought of Bill being this pathetic bitter little lying wretch too much, that's completely possible. It's just that this idea of Bill hating Stan so much he flies into blind rages while Stan doesn't seem to give him a spare thought....
This concept keeps me up at night

On Saturday, former U.S. President Donald Trump became the latest major political figure worldwide to face an assassination attempt, in an incident that experts say may reflect a broader global pattern of increasing threats and violence against politicians.
In recent years, for example, both Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico and former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan have survived being shot (Fico in May this year and Khan in November 2022), while then-Argentine Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner narrowly escaped a shooting attempt in 2022 when the gunman’s pistol jammed. South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung was stabbed in January, and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was stabbed in 2018. And assassinations claimed the lives of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (in 2022) and British politicians Jo Cox (in 2016) and David Amess (in 2021).
“We seem to be seeing that assassinations are on the rise now,” said Jacob Ware, a terrorism expert at the Council on Foreign Relations and the co-author of God, Guns, and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America, although he noted that he was drawing on anecdotal evidence.
“Politicians and political figures are finding themselves in the crosshairs, and the people are determining that the ballot box and elections are no longer the best way to exercise political grievances,” Ware said.
The United States is no stranger to high-profile assassinations and attempts, both on the lives of sitting U.S. presidents and presidential candidates. Four former U.S. presidentsïżœïżœïżœAbraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley, and John F. Kennedy—were killed during their presidential terms. A handful more survived failed attempts, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush, the latter of whom had a hand grenade thrown at him while in Tbilisi, Georgia. In 1968, U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, was assassinated.
In recent years, the number of threats issued against U.S. public officials has grown, according to a 2024 study conducted by the researchers at the National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education Center. The study, which examined federal charges over the past decade, found that threats have “steadily risen” over that time period, coinciding with a surge in political polarization across the country.
“In the last six years, the number of individuals who have been arrested at the federal level for making threats has nearly doubled from the previous four years,” the study’s authors wrote, while the number of federal prosecutions for such threats is “on pace to hit new record highs” in 2023 and 2024.
“The mistrust and distrust of government is so great that it leads to almost the dehumanization of political figures,” said Bruce Hoffman, a counterterrorism expert at the Council on Foreign Relations and the other co-author of God, Guns, and Sedition: Far-Right Terrorism in America. “That’s also contributed to this demonization of individuals that can, in the minds of certainly a minority of Americans, incite violence.”
Two recent examples are incidents involving former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who were the targets of failed abduction and assassination plots, respectively; in the Pelosi case, though the former speaker avoided the attack, her husband was brutally assaulted with a hammer. And in 2020, the FBI announced that it had arrested more than a dozen people in connection with a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and put her on trial for treason; nine people were ultimately convicted or pleaded guilty in the plot, and five were acquitted.
“It certainly feels like we’re in a different era. There’s a lack of civility that I think permeates our political discourse, and it’s frequently peppered with references to violence and extreme violence” said Colin P. Clarke, the director of research at the Soufan Group. That includes Trump himself, Clarke said, who “has been a big purveyor of this.”
That may not be a uniquely American phenomenon, either. While assassinations of high-profile leaders in the world’s most-developed nations may be relatively rare today, the outlook may be different for other government figures around the world.
One key example is Mexico, which recently reached a bleak new political milestone in holding its deadliest election season ever. During the country’s 2024 election cycle, 37 political candidates were assassinated, many of whom were vying for local office. In the country’s 2021 midterm election, 36 candidates were assassinated, according to Integralia, a security consultancy.
Beyond the issue of assassinations, other violence against candidates was also more pervasive in Mexico this year. Integralia logged 828 nonlethal violent incidents during the 2024 election season, eclipsing the 389 attacks recorded in 2018 during the country’s previous presidential election.
Pakistan has also experienced a rise in such threats in recent years. According to the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database, whose data only goes as far as 2020, Pakistan experienced a marked uptick in assassinations and attempts against government officials from 2012 to 2016, peaking at 36 in 2013 and 2015.
While variations in laws and data collection make it difficult for researchers to measure whether there’s been a broad global uptick in violence, these examples indicate that they’re hardly uncommon. Now, the attempted assassination of Trump may serve as an alarm bell for other officials around the world. On Sunday, John Woodcock, a member of the U.K. House of Lords and a former government advisor on political violence, said in an interview with the Guardian that the attempted assassination is “a vivid reminder of the vulnerability of all politicians” and warned of the possibility of similar attacks in the United Kingdom.
“We have seen the growth in the UK of US-style politics of aggressive confrontation and intimidation which is unfortunately, exactly the toxic environment that could lead to another assassination attempt on a UK politician, of which we have already tragically seen a number in recent years,” he said.
Ware, the Council on Foreign Relations expert, said that the attempted assassination of Trump, a former U.S. president, presents an “opportunity for Americans to come together and decide: ‘Is this really the kind of country that we want to build for the next generation?’”

Abigail Spencer and Goran Visnjic in Timeless (2016)The World's Columbian Exposition
S1E11
Wyatt and Rufus are desperate to rescue Lucy, whom Flynn kidnapped to attend the 1893 Chicago World's Fair in order to kill Rutherford seniors Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and J. P. Morgan. Following them, Wyatt and Rufus get trapped with architect Sophia Hayden and a guest named George Henry in the World's Fair Hotel, run by sadistic serial killer H. H. Holmes as a trap. At the fair, Lucy and Flynn force Harry Houdini to break into Edison's office to plant a bomb, but Houdini outsmarts Flynn, who can barely escape. Houdini and Lucy save Wyatt and Rufus at the hotel, where Lucy realizes that "George" is Holmes just as she is captured, but Wyatt saves her by killing Holmes. The trio returns to the present. Rufus records a threat to Rittenhouse and hands it to Mason. Wyatt gets a phone call from Flynn, revealing Jessica's killer and suggesting Wyatt tries erasing his existence.
*Holmes' quote, "I was born with the devil in me," is an actual quote attributed to the real H. H. Holmes when he confessed to his murders.

Baby, You Can Drive My Car, If You Can Find It
I kept a secret for the last year, but now it's time to let that secret escape.
In September of 2016, our beloved Ford Focus fell victim to a guy trying to turn into traffic with the setting sun in his eyes. We replaced it with what became equally beloved, a 2014 Ford Escape, which I call burgundy but which is technically ruby red.
Tumblr media
I cannot conceive of why there have to be fifty shades of red. When I became a volunteer firefighter, we had several fire trucks that were red. We had one that was burgundy. That's it. The names of colors never made us hungry.
Anyway, this car had a backup camera and a computer screen, neither of which I saw any use for, both of which I now wouldn't do without. We drove that car all over everywhere. Well, four states, anyway, and about two dozen state parks, not to mention Chicago. Don't get me started on Chicago.
It always amused me, how many ruby red SUVs we noticed on the road after that. Probably just the bias of us having one, but it seemed like we saw them everywhere.
Tumblr media
"You get a ruby SUV, you get a ruby SUV--you all get a ruby SUV!"
When it developed a very small radiator leak I wasn't too concerned, until nobody could find the leak. I mean nobody, including mechanics and the dealer. Then one of the spark plugs started acting up. Then everything started acting up.
We drove it a LOT, mind you.
But estimates for fixing the problem, assuming we could figure out what the problem was, brought us into the "nickle and diming us" phase of car ownership. We needed a new car. Emily started researching, and I looked around.
Tumblr media
Do you see Emily? I didn't--I almost got into the wrong car.
We found a car that was a heck of a deal, if we were willing to drive some distance to look at it. We did. We looked. We fell in love.
Much to our surprise, we drove back home in a different car than the one we'd left in. Having learned my lessons, I embraced the changes that came with a vehicle five years newer. It has so much extra safety equipment that the insurance cost actually went down.
It also has heated seats, and a heated steering wheel, two things I used to make fun of. No more. The screen showed us where we were and where we were going, and the computer could connect our phones (audio book, yay!), make us hot tea, warn us if we were approaching a politician with his hand out, and even play the radio.
And it had remote start.
Whoever invented the remote start needs to win the Nobel Prize For Awesome.
As we headed home, I suggested to Emily that we play a little game. "Let's not tell anyone we bought a car, and see how long before anyone notices." You see, we replaced the ruby red 2014 Ford Escape with a ruby red 2019 Ford Escape.
Tumblr media
The photo above shows them together--the new one's on the right. We took the front license plate off, but there's still a considerable difference in the front. In the back, not so much.
A few of my family members noticed right away--nobody else did unless I pointed it out to them. After all, someone else's car is not something the average person pays close attention to. Still, it was a lot of fun having the secret. It was also a lot of fun seeing my speed in kilometers per hour: The car comes from Canada.

Chevrolet Malibu - Wikipedia
"1,490 cc (91 cu in) 1.5-liter LFV Inline-4 2016–present 163 bhp (122 kW) @5600 rpm[84] 184 lb⋅ft (249 N⋅m) @2000–4000 rpm"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Malibu#:~:text=Torque%20%40%20rpm-,1%2C490%C2%A0cc%20(91%C2%A0cu%C2%A0in)%201.5%2Dliter%20LFV%20Inline%2D4,184%C2%A0lb%E2%8B%85ft%20(249%C2%A0N%E2%8B%85m)%20%402000%E2%80%934000%20rpm,-%5B84%5D
They're 2023 to 2024 front wheel drive with only 163 horsepower at maximum rpm that is piss poor ladies and gentlemen this motor is too small the power anything one would think this car goes slow and no it's called a compact. Is the size of our son's car and it's a little weaker but his was fast even with people in it a bit too fast we thought and it's true his had 180 horsepower the car weighs a lot it's a lot of junk on it if you take the body off which you will and the gas tank stays where it is by the way and you take the seats out the interior the doors come off the roof glass everything the hood and stuff the tires we have ton they weigh a ton and you're taking off about 13 to 1400 lb and putting back about 700 lb if that the car would weigh about 1700 lb and it would get up and move because of that fact alone that it would be very light as it is now this car will top out at 180 and this is a function and it's what is some of the first one was saying and he was adamant about it and he's still right and we have prototypes and we do have prototypes of this particular car and the front wheel drive doesn't fit on any of the supercars except for the vaydor. And that kind of be very fast and it would be easy to make and easy to assemble but relocating the engines would be difficult because it's four-wheel drive front wheel drive and didn't make many recently that a rear wheel drive simply the Ford mustang and the Camaro and people hesitate to change those we think top speed of the relatively recent five years of the standard Ford mustang and Camaro about the same as about a hundred and eighty miles an hour I don't know no they have about 350 and a 361 and they go about 220 stock it's pretty fast and it feels fast and it looks fast you can adjust it and get about 240 out of it which is very fast but if you put a kit on and you move the motor back it will go 390 and these days 240 is not that fast our sun has been up to a couple hundred a little over and it's not really as fast as you would think he says and it's true on that roadway and a side of Worcester and it was Auburn is going about 210 and it was not really that fast and yeah people can catch you and police cars those interceptors go about 280 and people know that but they still figured it goes fast enough and they don't get in high speed cases like that they get in some cases just you zoom out and if you're ahead of them you can escape it's not really that long of a chase that goes off so it's not a nice payout so you can't really count on the Foreigner Chevy mustang or Camaro but you can count on a sedan I'm thinking that fast enough and really the body style of a Vader would work and maybe a Bugatti no it won't work they're much slower so that's what was designed for and it came from something else but it fits and people don't want to buy a Vader and it has to do with Darth Vader believe it or not it stops selling because of that and there are other cars that look like it but not many
