I really do think it’s so interesting how Beta turned Aloy’s understanding of herself on its head in so many ways.

For so long Aloy believes that she is who she is specifically because she grew up in hardship, and even takes pride in the difficulties she faced (“They had the tribe, but I had the wilds.”), believing it sets her apart. Later, when she learns of her connection to Elisabet she begins to factor that in as well, believing her tenacity and her determination to be gifts that came directly from her mother, further shaped and cultivated by her harsh upbringing.

Beta however, is none of these things at first, and it forces Aloy to realign her perspective. It forces her to realise that being Lis’ clone doesn’t necessarily mean that she’ll be Lis’ mirror image in every way, that her bravery is hers alone to take pride in, that she can be proud of her similarities to her mother without losing her own personhood and thinking of herself as an extension of Elisabet. As well as that, she’s forced to reconcile the fact that it wasn’t the hardships she faced that shaped her, but the opposite in fact:

It was precisely because she had someone on her side that she felt secure enough to take risks and to push herself to be stronger, something she only realises when she encounters a “version” of herself who grew up in just as much if not worse hardship, who didn’t have that unconditional support.

This is a realisation that even Elisabet perhaps never made for herself, at least until Zero Dawn forced her to rely on a team, and it’s a big part of why Aloy finally allows herself to step out from under the shadow of Lis’ legacy, and allows herself to trust her friends to be that unconditional support.

Finally got back into Forbidden West to finish it and play the DLC, and I have thoughts:

Ted Faro's scene was supposed to be horrific, was instead just very funny. Sorry. You can't make a man into a Resident Evil Creature and just keep him offscreen. You especially can't have a guy walk into the room with him, then turn on his heel and leave like "oh. oh yuck. oh that is so gross. Oh you have to burn that so the player doesn't see it, I beg of you." Silly.

I love Tilda! I love her a lot. I love that she's weird and offputting and looks at Aloy but doesn't see Aloy at all. I love that she wanted to put Aloy on display in her art room for eternity so she could see Elizabet whenever she pleased. I also think she is very funny for dragging an immaculate table setting out to her blasted, ruined house, and for serving croissants that were obviously never going to be eaten.

Whenever Aloy talks about Elizabet like she was a superhero I just like to imagine what Elizabet would think if she saw Aloy fighting a robot T-Rex with a bow, a spear, and a slingshot.

Aloy and Sekya are really cute together, and I hope the fact that you can reject her doesn't mean the romance is entirely ignored in 3. By far my favourite part of the DLC was when Sekya left in a huff, and Aloy's just saying to herself "Oh no she's upset... ahh I'm upset too, because she's upset!! What's that about!?" Cutie.

Lis and Tilda both had the same amount of trouble trusting people to stay with them but Lis handled that by refusing to open herself up to people and by remaining a solitary creature whereas Tilda tried to manipulate them into staying with her
