Ok, Ontario Academic Credits.

This was a fifth year of high school (Grade 13) that was a preparation for secondary schooling.

Classes in high school when I went there (1990s) were separated into “Basic” (applied-focused curriculums), General, and Advanced, which streamed into functionally “Trades,” “Associate Degrees,” and “Bachelor Degrees” as the next step after graduation.

The system seems to still exist with different terms, Applied, Academic, and Advanced Placement.

OAC does not, and was eliminated in 2003, which was a thing as I was still in university at the time and it was called the “Double Cohort [of freshmen]” for a reason.

But when it existed, OAC was kind of like half an Associate’s Degree you got without paying because it was still in the secondary schools, a bunch of prerequisites for later university courses.

Except they were all in your fifth year.

Anyway, I took 2 years of OAC, with a study period in each semester, and that really helped with my anxiety going into university because I really did need those two years to grow up enough to manage the undiagnosed Autistic social issues. So Win-Win!!!

OAC may be gone, but fifth year in high school in Ontario are not… Many still take “victory laps” to this day.

The fact the legal drinking age in Ontario is 19 may also contribute…
