Pidge stood atop the hill, the soon blackening sky approaching the lowering sun.

Today was a fucking weird-ass day, but it wasn't like they had a concept of normal anyways. They met all kinds of creatures, or pokemon (that insisted they were not pokemon). And a person that said he got turned into a pokemon--but that 's a whole other shitshow for another moment.

But more importantly, they knew.

They knew of Pidge, and thier situation, and when they heard their plight--Pidge realized they didn't have to try to defend themselves while explaining.

That emptiness...it followed them everywhere, and they saw that gaping cavity within a few moments.

And still, they did not chastise Pidge for what they already knew was "wrong".

It felt nice to serve. It felt nice to be useful, even for the worst of the worst. It was nice to have the breeze in their (totally not girly) hair.

Mangie approached Pidge from behind, thier callous and ungrateful hooves dragging through the dirt.

A glance back. Eyes met. And Pidge tilted thier head fully to Mangie.

"...You get it, right?"

...

"Yeah. I fuckin do."

Mangie sat down next to pidge, looking out at the sunset in a grimace.

"...And I'm sorry for what you had to do."

"...Thank you, Mangie. I just...wish things were different. Better."

"But...you can't imagine it, right? Team Rocket's been your whole life"."

"..It has."

"Is it still going to stay that way?"

"Do I have a choice?"

"maybe."

Pidge looked back into the sun again, and thought of the little boy who had called him his friend. Who clung to his gloves--who had the nonexistent presence of his perpetually busy parents. He was lonely in a way that was hard to describe. And he was kind.

Pidge had seen himself just for a moment in that boy.

"...I have someone I care about. Does that count?"

"...Sure as hell does, mate."
