I'm so obsessed with Tron Legacy it's just this beautiful little fucked up movie that is INTENSELY dedicated to being a synaesthetic art piece while also hitting Disney's mandated sad dad storyline from the late 2000s

But EVERY SCENE is gorgeous. Almost every FRAME you could put on your wall as an art piece. Daft Punk did the soundtrack! You can't GET shit like this anymore it's just a one in a billion event where everything came together right

They got away with so much and no disney movie will ever go this hard ever again

Each turn of the story is based on the era Tron was made in, which is a time where the internet belonged to the people, when the ideas for its use were based in the common use of technology. Tron represents not just cool disk battles, but the core ideas of the cyberpunk genre, & a hope for a free internet. If you do not have these elements, you don’t have Tron.

Why Alan couldn’t cut it-

I’m not beating the “is obsessed with the 82’ novelization accusations, this is my 5th time reading it. In my defense it’s great and adds a lot of detail, anyways.

The way it talks about Alan and his morals really struck me. They put him into a great contrast with Dillinger and even Flynn, who ultimately does good but is a bit looser when it comes to following rules. The paragraph says it better than I’m going to but his decision to go along with the break in plan comes simply because he feels what’s happening at ENCOM is wrong. Someone has to do something, Alan waits before acting himself sees if anyone attacks from a legal Avenue. A “someone will” attitude, because he has so much faith in others that he knows it’s not just him who will see a issue and want to do something about it. Not him but someone will… unfortunately we don’t live in a world with many “doers”. His decision to go along with the break in is a spur of the moment, he’s struck with sympathy for Flynn and his already existent frustration and sense of wrong. It’s probably one of the first times he doesn’t talk himself into backing down.

Alan is a good man. A honest man and a hard worker who’s faith in others is a bit higher than they deserve. He’s a rarity! A honest, rule following businessman. That’s why he could never last at the top of ENCOM, in “the last day” short film and likely the Flynn lives campaign there’s a brief mention of Alan being a Temp CEO while Flynn was missing. This was a very brief period in the 90s that quickly saw him pushed back down onto the board and basically being expected to shut up. Almost a quite firing. He’s not cut out for the cutthroat corporate game - he’s good at deals and explaining what they do but that only gets you so far… I can also see why from a talk perspective. In the Paranoids online mini video he absolutely flounders until Lora swoops in to save him. He’s not exactly Flashy Kevin flynn who could go “woof” into the mic and make the crowd go wild.

Additionally I love how much this puts him into contrast with Tron. For all the things that make Alan weak in the business world are what make Tron the admirable chosen warrior, the noble hero, within the grid. Here all of the best aspects of Alan are commemorated. That honesty, faith and stalwart behavior are better suited for the mythical other world of fairytale endings. Good conquers evil, the MCP explodes and the end. In the real world? Good luck, good guys can’t seem to win anymore.

LOOK AT THAT VIDEO!!! FULL DEDICATED WEBSITES, A RECREATION OF FLYNN'S ARCADE, PEOPLE HUNTING FOR CLUES, PEOPLE 'GETTING INTO' THE END OF THE LINE, FLYNN'S NOTES ON HIS PROJECTS, AN ENCOM PRESS CONFERENCE AND INTERVIEW WITH ALAN BRADLEY, THAT GORGEOUS LIGHTCYCLE. MY GOODNES WHOEVER HAD THE IDEA WAS A FUCKING GENIUS.

Is there someone in here that participated in it? If yes, please tell me how it really was/ how it went, if it was really this cool.

Idk why but I find all of it really exciting, even tho, if I knew about it back in the day, I wouldn't have been able to participate because I live in Europe and I was a lil kid.

Damn... It would be really cool to have something similar rn, but Disney really fell off and would never put so much effort into something like this ever again.

The evolution of technology, & the Tron franchise.

So, in my opinion one of the key reasons that Tron changed, from the original to Legacy, is the fundamental theme in the series of technology. The original Tron was revolutionary for its use of 3D animation, & largely represented the imagination of what the internet, & computers at large, could be.

Because of this, we see highly complex designs, with bulky buildings & armor, reflecting the current state of computers at the time.

This is what a computer from the 1980s looked like. They were far less standardized than they are today- they were bulky, & their colors were a combination of white, with pretty thin colorful details on the screen. The original world of Tron reflects this view of computers.

But the world changed after Tron released. Technology became streamlined, & minimalistic. Not to mention movie making graphics evolved over time.

On top of this, hopes & fears about technology changed as well. The individual hero of Tron/Kevin, & the overwhelming presence of corporate control of technology, shifted into the successor of the generation that invented the internet, & less of a focus on company control of computers in general. Instead, Encom OS is the key point of reference for their corporate greed- control of platforms, & algorithms. The ISOs are a key difference. ISOs represent technology forming intelligence, & culture- not just AI, but general digital life separated from reality. It’s a whole new anxiety unique to the new era of the internet. Tron could not exist in its original form today, just as, in my opinion, it requires further evolution from Legacy. Tron must reflect new technology, & I think they have a lot of things to work with when it comes to that. The fear expressed by CLU is a reflection of ourselves, human as we are, in the digital landscape. A much more personal & human enemy then the Master Control Program.
