Work in Progress, because I have no idea when I'll muster the stamina to finish this, but ho boy. @ v @ ; It's still quite rough, and clean-up will be a labor and a half, but if this comes out the way I want, it's going to be epic.
Tumblr media
This is not something I'm used to, but I stole a weekend, buckled down and got it inked/flat-colored. Breaking now so I can recover and try not to crap out on the rendering stage. This is more a set of characters than of Pokémon, but yeah. @ v @ ;
Unlike before with solo images for each Fakemon, I decided since the Quailing line in my last post was domesticated by a Spider-based line of Fakemon (Distrawt & Thinteret/Auruneus), I should feature these species in one big composition, to show some of their behaviors and interactions!
This is all extremely self-indulgent stuff with no basis in Pokémon formula, but I'm having fun! The docs are still a mess, but someday I want to organize everything into a cohesive, presentable "handbook" that other people can play with or build on, if they wish.
One thing I want to get out of the way though; the cat-like head shapes are because I'm a goober and wanted to base these on Araneus gemmoides, also called "Cat-faced Spiders". C'X
For people who are interested in the WIP handbook notes, you can enjoy them under the cut! ^^
-+-+- Quailing Line -+-+-
Background/Dev Notes: (Inspirations: Peafowl, Quail & Lost Souls)
This line is a divergence from the Pidove line that took on an afterlife of its own in the Hopian Region. Historically, Unfezant was extremely popular game — this saw a resurgence in the final days of humankind as they persevered to the best of their ability. Unfortunately for Unfeazant, this often meant that parents, upon leaving their nests to forage, never returned. The unguarded but well-hidden eggs would result in stillborn Pidove, that over time, would absorb enough radiation and eventually hatch into these ghostlings.
Quailing | The Watchful Pokémon | Ghost-Flying Quailing are almost always seen loafed and shivering, as their unnatural conception leaves them paralyzed with fear and inhibits the instinct to learn to walk. With support from a good trainer however, this Pokémon has extraordinary potential. The eyes on their shoulders are only the beginning — more will come…
Spifoul | The Challenge Pokémon | Ghost-Flying Spifoul by nature, are agitated and confused, using their growing spurs as weapons against perceived threats. They’ve mastered mobility and their empowered spectral eyes increase their awareness, but they are rather aggressive as a result of persistent adolescent fears. This stage requires the most patience, but it pays off tremendously.
Bogeyvo | The Joyous Pokémon | Ghost-Flying Bogeyvo are typically encountered as domesticated by experienced Thinteret, used as sentries and to make fine thread and yarn from Distrawt silk using their spurs. Wherever you find them, Bogeyvo are equally known as formidable guardians that seek to offer others the protection and nurturing they initially hadn’t. By now, the eyes are no longer a symbol of fear, but of POWER.
-+-+- Distrawt Line -+-+-
Background/Dev Notes: (Inspirations: Cat-faced Spider, Spinning Wheels & Straw-into-Gold)
The Distrawt Line are male-dominated farmers by trade, domesticating the Quailing Line and collecting the silk of their youngest, with the intermediate-stage taking up trades, and the exceedingly rare final-stage acting as master weavers and community elders/leaders. The harvesting of their young’s byproducts does not strike them as odd or wrong in any way, and out of all the former humans, they have the most estranged perspective, having taken on arachnid thought patterns and instincts. As humans, they were the survivors, the ones prepared to continue well after the world had ended, and who earned all the Champion’s respect…
Distrawt | The Rough Silk Pokémon | Bug-Grass Tiny spider Pokémon that have evolved incessantly-produced straw-like silk. If not harvested regularly, the spinnerets on their backs will become painfully clogged, and the piled up silk will render them immobilized — helpless, they will cry loudly until the pain and stress are dealt with.
Thinteret | The Working Pokémon | Bug-Grass These eusocial arachnids spend much of their time honing their craft, practicing refinement with and of their own silk and harvesting Distrawts’, producing threads to be processed by the Bogeyvo they’ve domesticated. The most seasoned of the weavers form leadership councils of the colony, and alone are entrusted with Moonstone, should the colony possess any…
Auruneus | The Gold-Weaver Pokémon | Bug-Steel By the power of the Moonstone, leading Thinteret can take this Veiled form, though typically only to protect the colony in a crisis, as this stage is the immutable and unnatural human element preserved within the bygone peoples, and generally kept hidden from the world. Using the threads woven by their dorsal spinning wheels, they wield fine, slicing golden wires to defend the community, and provide textile support in times of dire need.
Commenting on this "textile support in times of dire need" bit: This is a Pokémon para-regional setting, and with that comes certain expectations for action and higher-stakes... and this region can certainly be scary and high-stakes... but it is also cottagecore-inspired, and there MUST and WILL be cozy elements. the Flying type!
the Flying type is not so much scuffed mechanically so much as it has weird distribution, possibly due to it being conceived more as a "Bird type" during development
gen one has seven bird Flying pokémon families - the pidgey, spearow, and doduo lines, as well as Farfetch'd and the three legendary birds - plus 7 non-bird Flying pokémon - Charizard, Butterfree, Zubat, Scyther, Gyarados, Aerodactyl, and Dragonite.
thing is, in original Red/Blue, none of the non-bird-like Pokémon could actually learn any Flying moves. all Flying moves are exclusive to birds exclusively.
this to me very much feels like they originally developed it as a "Bird type", then changed it into "Flying" and added it to a few extra pokémon, without bothering to change the movesets.

Official(?) Art for the 18 gym leaders #3
Tumblr media
Felix Levine is the young flying-type gym leader. He's famous (and infamous) for his unique battles that challenge your ability to work with pokemon rather than just battling with them.
He does this with a dangerous sky-high battle over the air surrounding the City In The Sky. Many trainers are too scared to actually participate in his battles, and even more are refused by Felix due to being too young (since the legal age to obtain a pokemon is just 10 years old, after all).
Outside of his incredibly dangerous battles, he's known for being an amazing inventor as a graduate of the Sawsbuck City's official academy.

Anyway. Bi and Mspec Lesbians aren't a hotly "debated" topic or even new to queer culture, it's just the newest thing that bullies who REALLY want to be homophobic and even racist use to justify harassing gay people they don't like.
It's the thinnest possible veneer of progressive language wrapped around TERF and reactionary rhetoric so that they can feel righteous for forming an angry mob against vulnerable targets. If you're gullible enough to fall for the newest wave of bigotry within the queer community, and turn on your allies because they're "confusing" or "invading your spaces," the SAME way they turned on bi/pan labels, trans people, xenogenders, neopronouns, and aroace people before this, then get lost.
#No patience. Wither and rot.#These motherfuckers dogpiled the legend who leaked the no fly list because it identified as the wrong type of lesbian.#They will attack the people doing DIRECT ACTION over dumbfuck label discourse. Deeply unserious people.#Embarrassing to think that there are rubes out there who keep falling for this#For ALL our sakes I hope this is literally their first rodeos and they really haven't fallen for this bullshit twice.#But unfortunately I'm too old to be that hopeful.#I didn't get to see the big ''public block list'' made for us dirty queers who support or are bi/mspec lesbians but I hope I was on it#If a man is best judged by his enemies then exclusionists who echo terf rhetoric are the ones I WANT to have.#And ''public lesbian block list'' is in quotes because if you REALLY thought that such a thing wasn't a ''GO HARASS THESE PEOPLE'' charter-#--then you have a black mold where your brain used to be and it's rapidly eating into the bathroom tile you call a skull#Unironically you should not have a platform if you are THAT stupid or malicious to think it was anything BUT a harassment charter#I hope they're ashamed.#Context for those unaware: a flesh-eating amoeba created a public blocklist for people who supported bi lesbians#Minors and extremely small creators without big platforms were on that list#People got harassed but the most namely was Lockandkeyhyena who had people raiding his server with racial slurs and death threats.#I hope everyone involved sees who their ''allies'' are when they spread that sentiment.#A bunch of people ACTUALLY 'invading someone's space' to post the n-word and suicidebait.#THAT is who you appeal to. Sit with that.

WIP TIME AGAIN! \o/
Back on the remake game for Fakemon - here we have overworked thumbnail sketches for a 3-stage line, a shiny concept, silhouette group for size comparison, and a couple detail/exploratory doodles.
A long, LONG time ago, I had an idea for a family of ghost-flying peafowl 'mons, and there's a load of conceptual rambles under the cut, but in short, these guys' designs are a work in progress, and a fun hop forward from older renditions (also in the cut below!) ^v^
2014 - Original Sprites for bookkeeping transparency:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2022 - Intermediate Redo before I resolved to try and design Fakemon that actually 'look like Pokémon'. C'X
Tumblr media
NAMING
Originally they were called Soffit, Spifowl and Bogavo. Now, the two last names received minor tweaks (now Spifoul & Bogeyvo to play up the ghost type more), but the first one changed completely, since while the name was cute, I hardly remembered the soft reason for its inspo. ^^' Quailing has an adorable double-meaning as I've brought quail in as a secondary animal base. The result is fun-sized, but still elaborate birdies, and I'm here for it. XD
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
ADDED CONCEPT:
Upfront Edit: I seemed to remember curved needles being a thing in sewing, but I was thinking of suture needles, so I need to decide if I'm straightening these spurs out (knitting), giving them hooks at the ends (crotchet) or standing by the Pokemon-given right to be only semi-realistic.
When I started to think about what would reinforce Cottagecore (a key theme of the '"region"), I thought: embroidery. This comes in the new modified spurs on their legs meant to reference knitting(?) needles, and the crest feathers looking like sewing needles.
Various textile crafts (homemade, and home-based especially!) tend to fit in well with this aesthetic, and embroidery often features very ornate patterns, similar to a peafowl's plumage. We can extend this to some form of adaptation, but how would it work?
Quicker-than-before & Revised Summary: The long spurs on their legs are used as weapons in the Spifoul stage, but as knitting/crocheting needles in the Bogeyvo stage. The upper stages of the Stider line farm their own young's silk, passing it off to their domesticated birbs to process it into reinforced thread and yarn, before fashioning these into various structures within and on the walls of their territory compounds. It's a LONG story I'm still in the process of figuring out, but it has to do with a complete reimagining of Stider and other former-starter lines that have since been replaced.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
MUTATION CONSIDERATIONS:
I reapproached these designs with the new concept that mutated/variant species are a prominent aspect of the setting, and this line is a mutated and tbh, undead deviation from the Pidove line! I'm trying to keep these traits in mind as things observed in birds mutated over time within the Chernobyl exclusion zone, while still creating something elegant, because... peafowl. >v<;
❧ beaks are reduced in size and shape ❧ albinizing/"discoloring" plumage ❧ feathers bent in increasingly odd ways (goal: 'ghostly waves') ❧ multiple eyes to be reworked, but are definitely there.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
OTHER DEV AREAS:
Color-wise, there will be variation from stage to stage, these are just sample/test fills and I'll play with it more once I have full-sized inked illustrations, but I do like the idea of contrast and a dark bottom for blending into undergrowth! The goal is not too muted, but not too loud for the setting, and letting them be colorful (they're Pokémon).
For patterns and shapes, these are a first pass. As I upscale and resketch, I'll be thinking about flow more critically. This was, as with color, about establishing contrast and breaking up larger planes.
What I'm struggling with most is avoiding overdesigning here. It's not a mythical or legendary 'mon, and less is more with this franchise, but it's pretty-bird and I'm not sure I can help myself. X'D
As I look at Quailing's dorsal head plumage, I'm thinking the brow area definitely needs a tweak. I was going for a cute cowl/ear-flap hat shape, but it really looks too much like a helmet or Mickey Mouse brow-ridge.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
BONUS "Mega Evolution": (half-joke reference)
(a thank you for making it this far. C'X)
Tumblr media
My region has a sort of re-flavored Mega gimmick I call "Veiled Forms" which are mystical/supernatural or in this case, downright strange abstractions of the Fakemon's concept(s). Any weirder and this could be the equivalent of a biblically-accurate angel, but I wanted to give it more of the wider fan seen in real-life peacocks, and couldn't get this backlit image out of my head — quite majestic!
The final image will have more detail and gradients, but I sketched this up quite quickly for an idea while it was fresh in my mind: a large green peafowl backed by a massive, radiant, golden halo shining through its hollow-ringed eyespots, one of which has replaced its very face — even more eyespots and its disembodied crest feathers floating elegantly above/about it.

COORIER (Flying/Psychic) - The Messenger Pokemon
Decided to finish this one for Valentine's Day, but got it ready too early so I decided to post it anyways, maybe I will make something new for Valentine.
COORIER is based on the Luzon Bleeding-Heart (Gallicolumba luzonica) mixed with a Mailman/Delivery Courier
It has the ability Overcoat as a reference to the phrase “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds” often associated with the postal office
