My head cannon endings for all the Hilda cast post finale (Spoilers for season 3)
Astrid
She remains in her home, never moving away. However she makes sure to visit Hilda often, which has become easier now that she's learned to fly again. She also doesn't get to lonely as she invites the Pooka to like with her and helps him practice shape shifting. When she dies she is buried where the fairy mound once was to be closer to her family.
Raven
He travels the world but always returns to Trollburg, on cold winter nights he joins Hilda and her family for tea and games, maybe the yule lads join in too. On his travels he spreads the story on Hilda far and wide even long after she's gone.
Tryla & Baba
They remain at the mountain most days but do ecompany Hilda on adventures during her weekly visit. They still live there long after everyone else is gone, telling tales of Hilda to the next hundreds of generations of trolls.
Anders
He continues living in Trollburg, working on wall and city maintenance with the bellkeeper. He never gets back together with Johana but he does try and be a better dad to Hilda, including taking her on that camping trip.
Johana
Begins selling her paintings to people, she also starts painting things from her and Hilda's adventures, including the Fae Ilse, which she still thinks about often. When she dies Hilda burries her at the fairy mound with Auntie Astrid, but she keeps a lock of her hair in a locket. One day, in the far future when Hilda has finally moved on she hangs that locket at the remains of the cabin.
Tontu
Just keeps doing what he does mostly. Going on adventures with Hilda occasionally but mostly keeping to himself. He remains in the house for a long time, even after Hilda had died.
Alfur
Keeps writing reports for the northern counties but he also begins working with Gerda and the safety patrol, his days are busy but that's how he likes them. When he dies, if elfs even do, he would be given a funeral pyre by the lost clan and Hilda returns to the northern counties to scatter his ashes.
Louise
Would go on many more adventures with the trio and would start to develop a crush on David, one that David would reciprocate. She would eventually become a wildlife photographer.
David
Started researching entomology and now runs an insect focused wildlife centre near the sparrow scout building, enjoying a more peaceful and quiet life than most of his friends. He also assists the linworm in a construction of a new garden on sparrow scout property, sometimes the two of them and Louise have tea together. He was the first to die out of the four and was buried in Trollburgs graveyard, later Louise would be buried with him when she died.
Frida
Finished her training and became a fully fledged witch. She would take over running the Trollburg library from Kaisa after Kaisa was appointed to the witch council. When they were teenagers she and Hilda started dating but they never decided to get married.
Hilda
She still goes on adventures in her teenage years, it wouldn't be Hilda if she didn't. She and Johanna also practised flying with their fae magic. She always makes sure to keep in touch with Astrid and Victoria. She continues to paint and make music and becomes a freelance artist like her mum. Twig also grows big enough to ride when he gets older. She lived in her apartment in Trollburg until her death. She and Frida were buried together at the overgrown remains of the cabin
Woodman
He's still there, deep in the woods. even after everyone else has long since died, perhaps he tells the tales of a mysterious blue haired friend to spirits to the passersby.
Or perhaps he would tell you that if you walk deep enough into the woods, you could find an old forest glen where a cabin once was, and you can speak to her spirit yourself

The Dark Picture REPAINT ~ Origins of the Ink Demon : Operation Drawcia Pt.6 ~
"In 2004 A.D."
[A Voice Reaching Out to Earth by SEGA Sound Team]
Ash : Rupika...I think it's really sad that PSO is coming to an end. But the servers are for private ones are going up and running till Sega abandons us. We're all good in this together, by would the company shut us down?
Rupika : I don't know, probably the profits.
Ash : Everything's going up in smoke until that happens. But I did no such thing as weak spots. But, hey, what can I say? I am a dude that fights against their attitudes. But say how is the telescope?
Rupika : It's working perfectly. I can't wait to try it out! But...I haven't been using a telescope before, I always wanted to see the stars, but I always wonder what's seeing the galaxy that beautiful all of these planets are amazing to see from here. It's the biggest of the biggest. I see everything in space with my our eyes. I Venus... I see Mars...
Ash : And I see a meteor flying through the stars...
*SA1 SFX : Tire screeching*
Rupika : Wait a sec. Flying Meteor through the stars? When did heard about that...Umm, Ash?
[Meteor Stirke by Hideaki Kobayashi]
Ash : Uhh, Yeah...?
Rupika : ...I think that really is a meteor.
Ash : What's it doing here flying over the planet?
Rupika : Whatever it is, it looks like that it was staying on course...Huh? What's that?
*A mysterious Red Beam knocks the meteor off course*
Rupika : Hey that Red Beam of light knocked it off course.
Ash : What could that be a problem to that?
*DBZ SFX : Booming*
Rupika & Ash : [exclaims]
Kireek : Huh? What was that massive shock?
Bernie : Did we get over run by a meteor?
Sil'Fer : Hey, guys! I think it's going to crash land into the planet!
Break the Formar : What?
*cuts to Rico and Flowen at the ruins*
Rico : Hey, Flowen. Do you feel something falling from the sky?
Flowen : No, but why tho?
*DBZ SFX : LOUD EXPLOSIONS+RUMBLING*
Rico : Woah! That intense shock and roaring sound.
Flowen : Sounds like that something crash landed on the planet!
*cuts back to Rupika and Ash*
Rupika : Is everyone okay...?
Ash : I think so.
Rupika : What was that? It looks like that the Meteor crashed landed in the subterranean depths of Ragol. Hmm? What is that?
Flowen : (amazed) Oh...!
Rico : [To Flowen] That light...It's coming from the crater.
Rupika : [To Ash] Hey, Ash. You thinking what I'm thinking?
Ash : [To Rupika] Totally.
"WELCOME TO PSO...BLUE BURST!"
"EPISODE IV BEGINS!"
*Meanwhile later at SEGA*
News Reporter : In other news, A meteor that was flying over Planet Ragol has crashed landed after a beam of red light knocked it off from it's course and released a ton of energy from the depths of Ragol's desert surface. However, Pioneer 2's research team went missing after a horde of desert creatures began to attack and has left everyone due to Leon Grahart's ambitions. The question is that former inhabitant of Ragol and caretaker of a Chao, Rupika. Felt ill when feels tremendous powers of D-Cell energy. Rupika is confirmed to be one of the three victims of D-Cells from the minds of Dark Falz, who was last defeated by the heroes of PSO that are the players, meaning Dark Falz had a connection with the Newman race...
Arle Nadja : Wow...Are you saying that Rupika is really a D-Cells user. Is this what Mr. Yuji Naka told us before those guys knew about it.
Amitie : Oh...I haven't forgotten about that. I discovered that there were single traces after your original company went out of business and that is why you became a part of the company since that mustache man and pinky copied our games for fun. Mean Bean and Avalanche, the owners that made Puyo Puyo have mysteriously disappeared since the 1980s.
Arle Nadja : Whaddya mean I had no rights of being part of what, of course Puyo Puyo is now part of SEGA after my original owners went out of business. So we joined Sonic Team in honor of our developer Compile Corporation as tribute.
Amitie : I think that we had it in ya, Arle Nadja.
"This is AMITIE...NEWEST PUYO GIRL ON THE BLOCK"
Arle Nadja : Right back at ya, Amitie.
"The Legendary Arle Nadja...Ex-hero of Madou Monogatari"
Arle Nadja : This whole Puyo Pop thing is a major success. And oh, don't mention that Puyo Puyo is derived part of Madou Monogatari.
Amitie : Thanks. I won't forget. Geez, it's quite a run down in here. You sure that we uses power for this. I wonder how the puyo blobs get their colors?
Arle Nadja : Beats me. I did it all by myself. I heard that Rulue's done being the "No shoes" lady and decided to get a fresh pair of kicks. What do you think of Rulue going from her soft soles to a pair boots, Carbuncle?
Carbuncle/Has Bean : My god, I have no clue of what you just said. So maybe it's time that we get a fresh pair after my wife and kids have been gone for a long time since Mean Bean Machine.
Amitie : [To Arle and Carbuncle] I was hoping that he was going to say.
Dark Arle : Arle...Is that you?
Arle Nadja : Huh? Who's there? Wait a sec...Dark Me?
Dark Arle : Arle...It's been so long, I'm glad that I was able to see you. How was your day as Sega's newest member. Our owners died because of that and more importantly, where are your friends, Arle?
Arle Nadja : Oh I don't know they're taking breaks...I'm sure I can live up to see my friends if only.
Dark Arle : That's great. I'll be happy to know that you are my rival and I always thought that I had the chance to see you in the modern day. Ever since our first meeting, wonder what it's like working for SEGA?
Arle Nadja : Well, our company we'll have to wait for that.
Dark Arle : That's wonderful of you. Can't wait to see what you've been cooking, dear. Guess what I found some pictures of footprints from Rulue's feet. I've finally got some evidence to prove it to you.
*shows pictures of footprints from a person*
Amitie : What are those, footprints?
Arle Nadja : I think you're right, Arle. When I said about Rulue's soft soles, I didn't meant that she had foot prints of not wearing shoes. She would never do something like this, would she? Where did those footprints come from?
Amitie : I don't know, it could be the fish with human arms and legs, but I highly recommend you that Rulue would never be some kind of demon or something.
Arle Nadja : I haven't sought about that, I was trying to tell you that it's mostly important about that incident happened a long time ago. Did Rulue find out what happened during the glory days?
Amitie : Hmmm...Be my lucky guess. I wonder how Rulue is doing.
Schezo : Arle! Arle! Hey, Arle!
Arle Nadja : [in mind] That voice...is it really Schezo?
Schezo : Arle!
Arle Nadja : Oh...Schezo! Long time no see!
Schezo : Arle! It's bad! Something went wrong with Rulue! She's in danger!
Arle Nadja : Rulue...? What could happen to her? What do you mean she's in danger?
*Scene cuts to Rulue washing the ink off her feet*
Rulue Oh, I can't stand for this, stupid filthy pervs. Why does it have to be the Mrs "No shoes lady" that did not wear shoes since the beginning. How did the Ink get on my feet so badly? Ever I was attacked by those things that spouted Ink...Why I, the Almighty Rulue, would be the only one that stands to not where shoes and accidentally stepped on some Ink on my soft soles. Why does it have to be like that? Oh...! I can't even stand for this! Oh phooey!
*lies on bed*
Rulue : It's no fair that I had that opportunity get me down.
*door opening*
Minotaur : Uhh, Mrs Rulue? Are you okay...You seemed to be down.
Rulue : It's nothing. Just because I changed a lot, doesn't mean I feel empty on the inside, when you were dreaming me about me, why I do feel...alone?
Minotaur : It's because that you had a long time friendship with Arale and therefore, I had a chance that you were even friends or rivals with Arale, you, Schezo, and Arle, has shaped the world of Madou Monogatari and Puyo...Since Puyo is the invented puzzle invented by our original creators that went out of business, things changed for us since the company to decided to have the rights of whether we may get scarred or even faced in the end.
[Ochanomizu Mansion Neighborhood (Night) by Mariko Nanba]
Rulue : Heh. I think you're right about that. Arle, Schezo, and I have shaped Madou Monogatari's future, it was our decisions that we decided to make a friendly puzzle game but despite having our dark days in the past, we could do things for a future of our own, instead of killing or tormenting in brutal ways, It feels like I've began to gone softer. Like I was going a little soft on these...
*She looks at her now cleaned sole to feel it*
Rulue : Ever since my parents forbid me to wear shoes, I decided that being rich is all too worthy when it comes to no shoes, but I do feel soft on the outside.
Minotaur : Well...I am certainly glad that you've come a long way, understanding the tone and I what I feel certainly the most is that I was the one that gave you the fresh pair of boots, maybe it's my suggestion since that robotnik fella decided to call the Puyo Blobs as beans.
Rulue : Yeah, right. That's not gonna happen in a million years.
Minotaur : Gladly to be true.
Rulue : I wonder if I could see Arle and Schezo again, I would never be the problem of all, so I decided that I need to come up with a solution.
*DOORBELL RINGING*
Rulue : Huh? Who can that be?
Minotaur : Probably some guests. It could be Arle and Schezo.
Rulue : That strange. We didn't order anything from those delivery guys. I didn't ordered any Kung Pow Chicken with a side of soup, did I? I'll get it. Great stuff, great time. I wonder who could that be?
*opens door*
Rulue : Listen, Arle. How many times do I have to tell people all the time. I said that I was going to be fine...
*we show Madou Monogatari's witch*
Rulue : Witch? What are you doing here? Did you tell Arle and the others about this situation going on? Yeah, yeah...I see that you're given me the silent treatment So...how's everything doing for Arle and Schezo. Did you really wished her a happy birthday, or an anniversary? Witch, what's wrong? Why are you so quiet all of sudden.
[Echo Night - Beyond OST : Track 10]
Minotaur : [v/o] Huh? Wait a sec. There's something wrong here. I don't think that Witch had an accident for some reasons...Why is her hands dripping with black ink? Wait a sec...
*behind Witch's back is a barbed tail*
Minotaur : [To Rulue] Miss, Rulue! Get away from her, that's not Witch!
Rulue : [To Minotaur] Huh? What are you talking about, Minotaur? It's only just Witch and what do you mean it's not her?
*Witch gives Rulue an evil grin*
Rulue : Ah...!?
Witch (?) : *growls as she attacks Rulue*
Rulue : AAAAH!!! *Struggles to fight her back* Wait, Wait, wait!
[Echo Night - Beyond OST : Track 7]
Rulue : Hey! What do you're think doing!? Get off me! Get off me! Get off me!
Minotaur : Rulue!
Rulue : Don't just stand there do something!
*Rulue and Witch begins to fight and roll around*
Rulue : Get off me, you stupid idiot! I'm not food! This is bad! I should've known that something might happen to us. I realized that situation going back in the past, Something must've happened to Witch, the "Real" Witch.
Witch (?) : ...Fresh meat and blood. *licks to slurp* Time to make you meet my stomach. *attempts to eat her*
Rulue : NO! I don't want to get eaten alive!
Witch (?) : Haaaa...!
*WHACK*
Minotaur : Chair!
Rulue : Good thinking!
Witch : What...What are you...
Rulue : Sorry, Witch. I know how it feels to be fake, but I can't even trusty a phony like you. But you wanna eat something...well then, eat this! *raises her feet over to Witch's face*
Witch (?) : Ehh? AAAAAAAH-!
*DBZ SFX : Crash*
Rulue :[To Witch] How does it like to get your face crushed by my feet?
Minotaur : Well, at least I'm not into that, but I really like it when she needed boots to wear. But goodness, Rulue. You killed the fake without using any shoes!
Rulue : It was all too worth it.
Witch : I...Is it gone? Is that fake really gone?
Rulue : Huh? Hey it's really...Witch!
Witch : Hey, guys. How's it going?
Rulue : Thank goodness, Witch. You're alright! I had you worried that you were that fake that tried to eat me, but I'm glad that you are okay.
Witch : Yeah, I am okay. But I'm fine, btdubs. Yeah, that other me who tried to eat me was a fake...the real and original is dead. Don't worry, I'm still a good girl and one of the good guys I can use any magic if I want to. I am a copy of the original. A lot of people from the world of Madou Monogatari have all died, not too much.
[Echo Night - Beyond OST : Track 13]
Rulue : A "copy"? Wait...We all died? How'd that happen? Are you really a copy as well?
Witch : Of course, I have been memorizing things to get the job done. Everyone who were involved of these situations have lost their lives, it's because of that queen was really the original the whole time and the other who is the hero is her "copy". I do remember her name, but it's like that she missing something from her. Ah yes, her name...It's Maka Albarn. I will remember that from the witch that created us as copies.
Rulue : So what are we going to do, Witch?
Witch : Easy. We can get to Arle in no time, she's waiting for us. Just to meet us for a long time. Come, we have a lot to catch up on. And remember, I am Witch, and I don't have a name for it.
Rulue : Oh...Okay.
Minotaur : What are we going to do, Rulue?
Rulue : I know one's thing for sure. We are going to meet Arle for the first time, retracing our steps on how we became a trio in the past. I'm going to change from Mrs no shoes to Mrs two shoes, cause the trio of Madou Monogatari is back.

Building a Lighter, Stronger Future with AAC Blocks Project Report
The construction industry continually evolves, striving for materials that offer superior performance while promoting sustainability. Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) blocks have emerged as a revolutionary material in this quest. These lightweight, prefabricated blocks are transforming construction practices, offering numerous benefits for builders, architects, and homeowners. An AAC Blocks project report can provide comprehensive insights into their production, advantages, and applications for those interested in exploring this material further.
What are AAC Blocks?
AAC blocks, also known as autoclaved aerated concrete blocks, are a unique building material made from a mix of sand, cement, lime, water, and a foaming agent like aluminum powder. This mixture undergoes curing in an autoclave (a high-pressure steam chamber), creating lightweight, cellular concrete blocks with exceptional properties.
The Advantages of Building with AAC Blocks
There are several compelling reasons to consider AAC blocks for your next construction project:
Lightweight
AAC blocks are significantly lighter than traditional concrete blocks, weighing up to four times less, which translates to several advantages:
Reduced dead load on the structure: Lighter walls require less robust foundations, leading to cost savings.
Easier handling and installation: AAC blocks are easier to maneuver during construction, reducing labor costs and improving worker ergonomics.
Feasibility for high-rise buildings: The lighter weight makes AAC blocks suitable for multi-story constructions.
Superior Thermal Insulation
The air pockets within AAC blocks create an effective thermal barrier, resulting in:
Energy-efficient buildings: AAC structures require less heating and cooling, leading to lower energy bills for occupants.
Improved comfort: AAC walls help maintain a comfortable indoor temperature throughout the year.
Fire Resistance
AAC blocks are inherently fire-resistant, providing superior fire protection compared to traditional concrete blocks. They can withstand high temperatures for extended periods, offering valuable safety benefits.
Sound Insulation
The cellular structure of AAC blocks also contributes to excellent sound absorption, creating a quieter and more peaceful living environment.
Workability
AAC blocks can be easily cut, drilled, and shaped using standard woodworking tools, allowing for greater design flexibility and efficient on-site modifications.
Sustainability
AAC block production utilizes recycled materials like fly ash and requires less energy than traditional concrete production. Additionally, their energy-saving properties contribute to a more sustainable building environment.
Faster Construction
The lightweight nature and ease of working with AAC blocks facilitate faster construction times compared to traditional methods.
Applications of AAC Blocks
The versatility of AAC blocks makes them suitable for a wide range of construction projects, including:
Residential buildings: Ideal for constructing single-family homes, multi-unit dwellings, and interior walls.
Commercial buildings: Fire resistance and sound insulation properties make them well-suited for offices, retail spaces, and hotels.
Industrial buildings: Suitable for constructing warehouses, factories, and other industrial facilities.
Is Starting an AAC Block Manufacturing Business Right for You?
The growing demand for AAC blocks presents a profitable business opportunity for entrepreneurs. However, starting an AAC block manufacturing business requires careful planning and consideration. Key factors to explore include:
Market Research: Conduct thorough market research to assess the demand for AAC blocks in your region. Identify potential customers like construction companies and developers.
AAC Blocks Project Report: Develop a comprehensive AAC blocks project report detailing the feasibility of your business venture. This report should include market analysis, production process, financial projections, and equipment requirements. Consider seeking professional assistance from a business consultant or a company specializing in creating customized bankable project reports for AAC block manufacturing businesses.
Financial Investment: Setting up an AAC block manufacturing plant requires significant upfront investment for equipment, raw materials, and land.
Technical Expertise: Establishing a successful AAC block manufacturing business necessitates knowledge of the production process, quality control procedures, and relevant regulations.
How to Get a Project Report?
You can obtain a customized bankable project report with IID.
Conclusion
AAC blocks represent a significant advancement in building materials, offering a combination of lightweight construction, superior insulation, fire resistance, and ease of use. If you're looking for a sustainable and cost-effective building solution, AAC blocks are worth considering. For aspiring entrepreneurs, the growing demand for AAC blocks presents a promising business opportunity. However, careful planning, market research, and a well-defined AAC blocks project report are crucial for success.

Fly ash is a byproduct that forms when coal is burned in thermal power plants. The most common use of fly ash is as a partial replacement for Portland cement. Normally, the replacement rate is between 20% and 30%, but can be as high as 50%. Concrete made from fly ash has increased strength, durability, and load carrying capacity. It is also less prone to chemical attacks and reduces the negative impact of harmful aggregates. Concrete made from fly ash is easy to work with due to its spherical shape. The use of fly ash also reduces the heat of hydration, shrinkage, and permeability. Concrete made from fly ash is used in buildings, highways, tunnels, and bridges for stronger construction. MarketsandMarkets expects the global fly ash market to grow from USD 3.4 billion in 2018 to USD 5.7 billion by 2027, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6.0% during the forecast period
The Indian government has made it mandatory for builders to construct buildings using fly ash bricks in 20 locations across India to reduce pollution. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change plans to increase the country’s fly ash utilization in the future. The Indian government has also withdrawn the excise duty of 8% levied earlier on fly ash products. The European Coal Combustion Products Association Membership is involved in promoting the use of fly ash in the construction industry. It is also involved in the development of legal and regulatory measures to establish fly ash as a valuable resource. Similar measures undertaken by governments and agencies in different countries have led to an increase in the use of fly ash.
Class F type segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. It is produced by burning anthracite and bituminous coal and requires a cementing agent such as Portland cement or lime to produce cementitious compounds. The percentage of Class F type fly ash used in concrete is between 15% and 25% of the mass of the cementitious material. The Class F type is generally low-calcium fly ash with carbon content varying from 5% to 10%.
The Portland cement & concrete application segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Fly ash is added to concrete to make it more durable and strong. Fly ash has low unit weight, and on a pound for pound basis, it contributes 30% more volume of cementitious material per pound as compared to cement. Hence, it is a suitable material to partially replace cement in construction activities. Fly ash also reduces the amount of water needed to make a concrete mixture by around 5% to 10%, as well as reduces the amount of sand needed in a concrete admixture.

Summary: Kuro is a mangaka and Mahiru is his editor. They visit London to do research for Kuro’s new shoujo manga. (KuroMahi, Modern AU)
“I’m back, Kuro! The meeting with the marketing department took me longer than I thought so I expect you to have your storyboards finished!” Mahiru called into the condo as he bent down to take off his shoes. The heavy bag he carried was lifted off his shoulder and he turned around to see Kuro. He hanged the bag on the wall for him. “Since you’re being so considerate right now, am I right to assume that you didn’t finish the chapter yet?”
“Ran out of inspiration.” Kuro said and tapped his finger against Mahiru’s lips. While Mahiru tried to feign annoyance, his faint blush betrayed his true emotions. He placed his hands on his strong shoulders and lifted himself onto his toes until he could kiss him softly. He thought a brief kiss would be enough for him but Kuro cupped his cheeks to steal a longer one. He whispered. “Welcome home, Mahiru.”
“Trying to put me in a good mood won’t get you out of trouble.” He nipped at Kuro’s lower lips before he let go of himself. Mahiru walked into the apartment they shared and threw himself onto the couch. He was tired after the meeting he had and he wanted to rest. “How far along are you in the storyboards? I’ll look them over for possible corrections.”
“I only need to finish the last two pages. Since it’s a two-page spread, it should only count as one page, right? That’s not much so don’t be mad.” Kuro collected a few sketchbooks from his work desk and then joined him on the couch. Mahiru sat up so there would be enough room for both of them. “You can look over what I have so far.”
Mahiru placed the sketchbook on his knee and flipped through the pages. He worked as Kuro’s editor for years and he enjoyed his manga series. Eventually, Mahiru fell in love with the man. They started dating but they had to keep their relationship a secret. It was unprofessional for an editor to date their manga artist and he would be fired if they were discovered.
When they decided to live together, they told others that it was so he could keep track of Kuro’s work better. He had an infamous reputation of missing deadlines and then sending the chapter around midnight. Kuro was talented but people found his work schedule impossible to manage. His past editors often asked to be assigned to another mangaka after a few missed deadlines.
Mahiru never gave up on him though. He would visit him every night to see his progress on the chapters and help him coordinate his schedule with the publishing company. It was clear that he loved helping mangaka publish their work. He was the best editor he had in his career and the effort Mahiru put into his job pushed Kuro to work harder as well.
“A talk show requested an interview with Sleepy Ash for the release of the new volume. You were finally able to surpass the sales of the former bestseller. I told them that you were too busy to give a public interview but you’ll send them a statement.” Mahiru told him.
“Thanks.” Since Kuro wanted to keep his privacy, he published his manga under a pseudonym. He leaned against Mahiru and showed him a sketch. “What do you think of this European cottage for the hideout?”
“This is beautiful but you should make the cottage more rustic. Thinking simply, they wouldn’t hide in something that stands out. Maybe have more trees around it too.” Mahiru suggested and Kuro nodded. He flipped to a new page and he started a new design for the cottage. In the corner of his eyes, he noticed Mahiru pull out a few magazines from his bag. “I picked up some travel magazines while I was out.”
Instead of handing them to Kuro, he sat on his lap and opened the magazine. “You said that you wanted to have the two leads go to Europe in a future chapter but you were having trouble choosing where. These might help you find one that suits the main couple. There are pictures in here that you can use for reference as well.”
“I was trying to choose between London or Paris. People say that Paris is the most romantic place to have a honeymoon. On the other hand, I grew up in London so I won’t have to do as much research for the chapter.” Kuro rested his cheek on Mahiru’s head and watched him flip to a different page. “Do you think I’ll be able to fly to London and do a little research? It’ll only be for a few days.”
“I can discuss the idea with the chief editor but it might be difficult to arrange the trip. The boss shouldn’t mind as long as you submit next month’s installment well before your deadline.” Mahiru started to rearrange their schedule in his mind. “If you add in travel time, you’ll be gone for a week. I’ll miss you while you’re in London. Make sure that you call every night so I know you’re eating properly.”
“You don’t have to worry about that. I was actually hoping that you would come to London with me. The university that I went to has a flower nursery that I know you’ll love. We can visit those tourist traps for couples too.” Kuro suggested. “You deserve a break.”
Last month was December and the publishing company wanted each of the mangaka to contribute special chapters and illustrations for the holiday. Mahiru worked late into the night to manage so many projects at once and review their work for publication. Now that the holiday rush was over and their job had slowed down, Kuro thought they could relax.
“I’ve never travelled outside of Japan before.” While he didn’t tell him directly, Mahiru knew that he suggested the vacation for his sake. Kuro was the type to show his feelings through his actions rather than direct words. Mahiru could feel his love in how he held him and supported him. A warmth fluttered in his stomach and then spread throughout his body. “I’ll ask for Misono’s approval tomorrow.”
“We can tell him that you’re going to supervise me while I’m in London. That’s the same thing we told everyone when you moved in and they believed it.” Kuro wished that he could tell more people about their relationship but he would never ask Mahiru to give up the job he loved. A vacation in London would allow them to go on a date like a normal couple. He buried his face into the nape of his neck and savoured his warmth. “I know a place we can stay that’s cheap but it’s still comfortable.”
“Honestly, I’m a little curious about your childhood in London.” Mahiru stared at the rose garden featured in the magazine and he imagined Kuro standing among the flowers like a scene from a shoujo. He turned the page and read the description of a statue. “The Mask of Truth? Maybe we can take a detour and go to Rome. I want to ask the mask whether a stray cat truly stole the last slice of pie like he said.”
“You should’ve seen the cat scale the wall to reach our window and steal your pie. He must’ve heard the legend of your wonderful baking.” Kuro’s silly story caused Mahiru to laugh. They both knew he wasn’t truly upset at him for eating the pie and he was only teasing him. Mahiru leaned back into his chest and reached up to stroke his hair.
“We can have as much cake as we want in London.” Kuro was wealthy with his job as a popular mangaka but Mahiru rarely asked him for anything. He respected how independent Mahiru was but he wanted to give him an easy life. “I should finish that new chapter so we can go on our vacation.”
“If only you can be this motivated all the time, Kuro.” Mahiru said but he knew how hard Kuro worked. He remembered the nights he found him asleep on his desk. In the past, Kuro ate instant noodles rather than a proper meal because it was quicker to make. He was able to see a side of him that others didn’t. Mahiru kissed his cheek lightly before he stood. “I’ll start making dinner.”
The plane ride from Tokyo to London took twelve hours and Kuro’s body was stiff after sitting for so long. He slept through most of the trip with his head on Mahiru’s shoulder and his presence made the cramp chair a little more comfortable. “If they make plane seats any smaller, they’ll be the size of baby chairs. I don’t know how you were able to work on the plane.”
“Those seats would be uncomfortable for a tall person like you.” Since Kuro was half British, he was taller than him. His strong features were appealing to Mahiru. He reached out to him and took his hand. “Misono said that it would be difficult for me to join you on this trip. We made a compromise that I can go as long as I work on the proposal for Tetsu’s new poetry collection during the trip. I wanted to finish the report on the plane so I could have more time with you in London.”
Kuro forgot how tired he was after he felt Mahiru’s warmth and he squeezed his hand slightly. He brought their interlocked fingers to his lips so he could kiss his hand. They both worked hard to be able to go on the trip and there were dark circles under Mahiru’s eyes. “Are you hungry? Airport food isn’t that great but it’s better than nothing. I’ll order us breakfast while you find us a table.”
“Okay. We have a lot of time before we need to sign into the hotel so there’s no rush.” Kuro handed Mahiru his suitcase and walked to the food stands nearby. They lived together and they knew each other well so he could guess what Mahiru would want for breakfast. He was glad that the line was short and he wouldn’t have to wait.
Mahiru found an empty booth and he set the suitcases next to each other. They were only staying for a few days so they didn’t pack a lot. Still, he had looked forward to the trip for the past week. A smile appeared on his lips as he imagined the different places they would visit. In the corner of his eyes, he noticed a stall that sold maps.
He kept the suitcases close to him as he walked to the stall. Kuro grew up in London but Mahiru thought they should have a map in case they become lost. A lot could change in a city, even in ten years. He chose a thick booklet that included pictures of different attractions. His English wasn’t the best but he tried to start a conversation with the cashier. “Hello. I am a tourist. I want to go on a date in London. Do you know a place that is very romantic?”
He and Kuro already had a list of attractions they planned to visit. He thought he should ask a local about other places they go. Mahiru held out the map to the cashier with the expectation that he would point to a spot. He was surprised when the man grabbed his wrist and pulled him closer. The desk was between them and Mahiru winced as his knee struck the wood.
“I thought Japanese men were more reserved but you asked me on a date before you even knew my name. You’re cute so I’ll accept. My shift ends in a few hours so wait for me in front of the airport.” He said and Mahiru realized that he misunderstood him.
“I did not mean that, Sir. I already have a boyfriend and I was asking about a date with him.” He tried to pull his hand out of the man’s grip. English had always been his worst subject and he wished he knew the language better. “Let go, Sir!”
“What are you doing to my boyfriend?” Relief washed over Mahiru the moment he heard Kuro’s voice. He placed himself between the two and the glare he aimed at the man was enough to make him let go of Mahiru. Kuro wrapped his arm around his waist and he naturally leaned into him. It didn’t seem the man had hurt him but he asked, “Are you okay, Mahiru?”
“He was the one who asked me out so shouldn’t you be mad at your boyfriend instead of me?” The cashier retorted and his words caused Kuro’s eyes to draw together. They began to speak in quick English and Mahiru couldn’t understand their discussion. “He asked me out.”
“I know Mahiru and he wouldn’t do something like that. You obviously misunderstood or something. Do you often try to grab tourists like this? I wasn’t going to report you to your boss because it would be troublesome. I don’t like people who lie about my boyfriend though.” Mahiru didn’t know what he told the cashier but it seemed to silence the cashier.
Kuro picked up the luggage next to them but he kept one arm around Mahiru’s waist. He led him away from the cashier. Beside him, Mahiru said: “Thank you, Kuro. I heard that other countries are more forward than Japan. Should I be more careful? You grew up in London so you act more casual with people but you never grabbed me like that.”
“That guy was just a creep.” Kuro said. He pulled Mahiru closer to him and kissed his forehead. He was glad that he could finally be affectionate with Mahiru in public. They both wanted to keep their relationship private but it was difficult since he was a popular mangaka. “When I moved to Tokyo, I was surprised by how different it was to London. But I’m not the type to be this affectionate with others. You’re the only one I would hold close like this.”
“How many pictures do you need to take of me for ‘references’, Kuro?” Mahiru sat on the ledge of a fence. They walked along the River Thames and Kuro would occasionally ask him to stand in front of an attraction for a picture. He claimed that he needed someone in the photo so he would have a reference for perspective and proportions. “I’m fine with posing for you but don’t put me in your manga as a character or anything like that. It’ll be embarrassing.”
“I won’t.” Kuro promised after he took another photo. He didn’t include Mahiru as a character in his shoujo series but he was the muse behind most of his work. His work had become more hopeful and warmer after they started dating. “I’m pretty sure if I put you into the series, the villain would be defeated by you easily. You’re the only person who can be both scary and cute when you glare.”
“Oh please, Kuro.” He rolled his eyes but there was a blush on his cheeks. He put the camera into his bag and then walked forward to help Mahiru off the fence. When he stepped in front of him, Mahiru shook his head and gently placed a hand on his shoulder. Kuro didn’t know what he intended to do but he stood still. Mahiru leaned on his shoulder for balance as he took out his phone. “This photo is for just us.”
“I’ll take it for you. Do you want the bridge in the background?” Kuro asked as he handed the phone to him. He held the phone at armlength and pulled Mahiru closer against his side so they could both fit into the photo. As he pressed the button, Kuro kissed his cheek lightly. He couldn’t help but grin as he pulled away and saw how flustered he was. “Do you like the photo? I can take another one if you want.”
“I like this one already.” Mahiru smiled at the image briefly before he put his phone back into pocket. He slid off the fence and into his arms. He stumbled slightly and he instinctively reached out to Kuro to catch himself. They didn’t have to worry about people discovering their relationship while they were in London so he wanted to savour the opportunity to hold him close. “Thanks, Kuro. You’re saving me a lot today.”
“I’m just glad you didn’t fall backwards into the lake. This cat is terrible at swimming.” They both knew that he would try to rescue him if he did fall into the water so Mahiru only laughed at his words. He stepped back from him and brushed the dirt from his pants. He took his hand and they continued to walk along the water. “The rose garden should be a few blocks from here.”
“London is tightly packed and we can easily walk places.” Mahiru said and squeezed his hand. They had already planned most of their trip but he would also have fun simply walking with him through the streets. “I know you find walking troublesome. How about we try one of those carriage rides? It might inspire a scene where the characters escape the villains with a horse and buggy.”
“I don’t mind walking like this.” Kuro shrugged but his words made Mahiru happy. “While we’re walking, we should try to find a local bookstore. Hyde made me promise to buy him some books as souvenirs. First edition Shakespeare collections.”
“Don’t get me started on the list of things Licht wants us to bring back.” Mahiru laughed. He rested his head against Kuro’s strong shoulder and smiled up at him. He tried to remember the English phases Misono taught him while they prepared for their trip. “Is there something you fancy, Kuro?”
“I fancy you.” He replied and his alluring voice created flutters in Mahiru’s stomach.
“You’ll have to wait until we get back to the hotel for that. Remember, we came here to do research on possible settings and locations for your next shoujo.” He reaches into Kuro’s pocket for his camera. Mahiru started to scroll through the photos. He paused on the image of Kuro eating fish and chips. It was a simple image but he thought he looked handsome and relaxed. “Maybe I should buy a cook book and try some new recipes.”
Before they met, Kuro would only eat instant ramen. He remembered the long lecture Mahiru gave him when he found his kitchen overflowing with ramen cups. He cooked him a proper meal after he finished yelling at him. They would eat together since that day and Kuro was certain he couldn’t go back to eating junk food. Mahiru had always supported him as more than an editor.
Kuro didn’t know when he fell in love with him but couldn’t see a future without Mahiru next to him.

Boom in camping as Americans escape after months at home (The Guardian) The coronavirus has sparked a surge in RV or motorhome purchasing and rental, and enthusiastic camping and “glamping” bookings as Americans attempt to escape months of quarantine for a summer break while avoiding flights and keeping their distance. The pandemic, which continues to rage across the US, has made many traditional holiday activities either impossible or unappealing, putting millions off flying abroad, going to crowded resort hotels, group holidays or cruises. But experts say the apparent lower risk of transmission in the open is making outdoor holidays in demand—and attracting new fans. Camping and glamping booking services report huge spikes in business, with some 400% busier than the same time last year, following the reopening of states for business. RV companies said business is “booming” in rental and sales. Meanwhile, outdoors retailer REI said it has seen record growth in its camping department in the last six weeks as people rush to buy equipment.
For Oklahoma Tribe, Vindication at Long Last (NYT) The sorrow and death of the Trail of Tears were still fresh when a band of Muscogee (Creek) people gathered by an oak tree in 1836 to deposit the ashes of the ceremonial fires they had carried across America and begin a new home in the West. It was called Tulasi, or “Old Town.” Tulsa. What followed were decades of betrayals, broken treaties and attempts to legislate and assimilate tribes out of existence. Then this week, the Supreme Court confirmed what the Muscogee (Creek) Nation has long asserted: That this land was their land. The court’s 5-to-4 declaration that much of Tulsa and eastern Oklahoma had long been a reservation of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation was seen as a watershed victory for Native Americans’ long campaign to uphold sovereignty, tribal boundaries and treaty obligations. For Muscogee citizens, who make up the country’s fourth-largest Native American tribe, it was also something deeply personal, a thoroughly American moment that rippled across time, connecting ancestors forced to leave their homes in the Southeast with future generations.
As beach towns open, businesses are short foreign workers (AP) At this time of the year, The Friendly Fisherman on Cape Cod is usually bustling with foreign students clearing tables and helping prepare orders of clam strips or fish and chips. But because of a freeze on visas, Janet Demetri won’t be employing the 20 or so workers this summer. So as the crowds rush back, Demetri must work with nine employees for her restaurant and market—forcing her to shutter the business twice a week. The Trump administration announced last month that it was extending a ban on green cards and adding many temporary visas to the freeze, including J-1 cultural exchange visas and H-2B visas. Businesses from forestry to fisheries to hospitality depend on these visas, though there are exceptions for the food processing sector. The move was billed as a chance to free up 525,000 jobs to Americans hard hit by the economic downturn, though the administration provided no evidence to support that. Businesses said they want to hire Americans but are in regions with tiny labor pools that are no match for the millions of tourists visiting each summer. Companies also face the challenge of convincing unemployed workers, many who are still collecting federal benefits, to take a job in the hospitality industry amid a pandemic. Rising housing prices as well as a lack of child care amid the pandemic also pose hurdles.
Panama Hospitals On Verge Of Collapse As Virus Cases Surge (AFP) Hospitals in Panama are on the brink of collapse as coronavirus cases spike in the Central American country worst hit by the pandemic, where doctors are already exhausted. With a population of four million, Panama has gone from 200 cases a day to 1,100 over the last few weeks. The sharp increase has forced authorities to adapt existing hospitals and look for new spaces, like convention centers, to boost a health system with a range of problems including long waiting lists. “The fear of the collapse of the public system in our country is evident if the number of cases remains the same,” Domingo Moreno, coordinator of a coalition of healthcare workers’ unions, told AFP.
UK-China ties freeze with debate over Huawei, Hong Kong (AP) Only five years ago, then-British Prime Minister David Cameron was celebrating a “golden era” in U.K.-China relations, bonding with President Xi Jinping over a pint of beer at the pub and signing off on trade deals worth billions. Those friendly scenes now seem like a distant memory. Hostile rhetoric has ratcheted up in recent days over Beijing’s new national security law for Hong Kong. Britain’s decision to offer refuge to millions in the former colony was met with a stern telling-off by China. And Chinese officials have threatened “consequences” if Britain treats it as a “hostile country” and decides to cut Chinese technology giant Huawei out of its critical telecoms infrastructure amid growing unease over security risks. All that is pointing to a much tougher stance against China, with a growing number in Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party taking a long, hard look at Britain’s Chinese ties.
Hungary imposes border checks, quarantine to prevent spread of virus (Reuters) Hungary has imposed new restrictions on cross-border travel as of next Wednesday in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus after a surge in new cases in several countries, Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff said on Sunday. Under the new rules, Hungarian nationals returning from high risk countries listed as “yellow” and “red” will have to go through health checks at the border and will have to go into quarantine. The same applies to foreigners coming from “yellow” countries, but their entry will be banned from “red” countries.
U.S. warns citizens of heightened detention risks in China (Reuters) The U.S. State Department warned American citizens on Saturday to “exercise increased caution” in China due to heightened risk of arbitrary law enforcement including detention and a ban from exiting the country. “U.S. citizens may be detained without access to U.S. consular services or information about their alleged crime,” the State Department said in a security alert issued to its citizens in China, adding that U.S. citizens may face “prolonged interrogations and extended detention” for reasons related to state security. “Security personnel may detain and/or deport U.S. citizens for sending private electronic messages critical of the Chinese government,” it added. The security alert comes as bilateral tensions intensify over issues ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic, trade, the new Hong Kong security law and allegations of human rights violations against Uighurs in the Xinjiang region.
Lockdowns make the heart grow fonder in Japan as online matchmaking surges (Washington Post) Japan’s matchmakers faced a dilemma: how to make those matches during the social distancing of the pandemic? Gone were group gatherings, one of the common icebreakers held by Japan’s popular agencies for people seeking a mate. Also called off were the one-on-one introductions arranged by dozens of Japan’s matchmaking companies, which can charge monthly fees as high as $200 for the many in Japan who don’t want to go solo into the online dating world. So the now-familiar tool of pandemic-era business—the video chat and those little windows—became an unexpected opportunity for Japan’s Cupids for hire. Matchmaking agencies say the video encounters have proved to be a hit, removing the pressures of arranged face-to-face sessions in a society that often discourages being bold and open in first meetings. “Without the online setting, we never would have met,” said Kazunori Nakanishi, a 31-year-old hotel employee from the eastern city of Kumamoto. Matchmakers arranged for him to chat with Ayako, a 43-year-old social worker. She lives in Tokyo, about 550 miles away. Late last month, shortly after restrictions on travel were lifted across Japan, they met in person for the first time. The following day they got married.
Defying U.S., China and Iran Near Trade and Military Partnership (NYT) Iran and China have quietly drafted a sweeping economic and security partnership that would clear the way for billions of dollars of Chinese investments in energy and other sectors, undercutting the Trump administration’s efforts to isolate the Iranian government because of its nuclear and military ambitions. The partnership, detailed in an 18-page proposed agreement obtained by The New York Times, would vastly expand Chinese presence in banking, telecommunications, ports, railways and dozens of other projects. In exchange, China would receive a regular—and, according to an Iranian official and an oil trader, heavily discounted—supply of Iranian oil over the next 25 years. The document also describes deepening military cooperation, potentially giving China a foothold in a region that has been a strategic preoccupation of the United States for decades. It calls for joint training and exercises, joint research and weapons development and intelligence sharing. The partnership—first proposed by China’s leader, Xi Jinping, during a visit to Iran in 2016—was approved by President Hassan Rouhani’s cabinet in June, Iran’s foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said last week.
Lives will be lost as Syria aid access cut, aid agencies warn (Reuters) A U.N. Security Council resolution that leaves only one of two border crossings open for aid deliveries from Turkey into rebel-held northwestern Syria will cost lives and intensify the suffering of 1.3 million people living there, aid agencies said. Western states had pressed for aid access to continue through two crossings at the Turkish border, but Russia, President Bashar al-Assad’s main ally in his war against, and China vetoed a last-ditch effort on Friday to keep both open. “In northwest Syria, where a vital cross-border lifeline has been closed ... it will be harder to reach an estimated 1.3 million people dependent on food and medicine delivered by the U.N. cross-border,” aid agencies operating in Syria said in a joint statement. “Many will now not receive the help they need. Lives will be lost. Suffering will intensify.”

[Chapter 1: Preparation]
[Friday, February 21, 2018]
The sun was searing bright in the dead center of the sky, as 1:00 PM was signalled by the aggressive pings going off on Richie’s watch. He hurriedly wrestled with papers, and their accompanied color coordinated post-it notes threatening to fly off, as he jostled them into his shoulder bag that he threw over his head and trotted down the hall from his office to meet with Stan about this upcoming Tuesday. And he knew that if he was even a few minutes late, Stan was going to grumble and roll his eyes into the next dimension. The good ol’ Stanley Uris eye roll, ladies and gentlemen. There was something special about Stan’s signature eye rolls: they were comically dramatic and looked borderline painful, but left you feeling disappointed in yourself even if you did abso-fucking-lutely nothing wrong. Well Richie had quite the reputation of being late, even as a part time professor, and he was making a solid effort to improve his habits.
He rounded the corners of the university’s biology department halls with little to no grace and excitedly threw open Stan’s office door with a loud *THUD* knocking off a poster that had been pinned to the back of the door. He was a mess of frizzy black curls, sporting a toothy grin extending from ear to ear in the archway of Stan’s office. Spatters of freckles painted his pale complexion on just about every patch of his body along with numerous tattoos (some large, some minimalistic), he wore thick horn rimmed glasses of severe prescription, and was overall a whimsical fashion anomaly.
Richie had been waiting for this Tuesday to come for approximately a year now and couldn’t contain his unbearable excitement from any person.
Not no way. Not no how.
He was beaming. After finishing his Ph.D in ecology in record time at the early age of 23, he was given the opportunity at the university to not only teach part time for extra cash, but was also given a significant amount of grant funding to conduct his own research in the Amazon basin for a few months where he’d be able to bring along a team for his trip. His own team?!
My own Justice League of nerds….yowza.
The university was confident that Richie would be producing highly acclaimed work in the future and wanted to provide him the services to do so (and to get their title slapped on his published reports in big, bold, obnoxious lettering). The University of California, Los Angeles was one of the top universities in the entire United States. Man was he a prestigious son of a gun, but he never really took it to heart about how much he naturally excelled. He just always did. It was a normality.
The lanky man was loud, lacked a filter, but carried a magnetism with him that was crafted through wit and overwhelming charm. And over everything….. he was fucking brilliant. Nearing genius. Dr. Richard Tozier could do differential equations in his sleep, but couldn’t coordinate an outfit that matched if his life depended on it. He was a wildlife ecologist who focused primarily on conservation, taking a keen interest in tropical habitats. There was so much dangerous shit in the jungle. Spiders the size of your fingernail that could make you bleed from every pore?
Cool.
Twelve foot snakes that were known to eat small children if they were hungry enough?
Fucking awesome.
Hell, even pissing in the water could send a fish swimming up your dick. Richie was enthralled with the uniqueness of everything in the jungle, because frankly, it seemed like the jungle just didn’t play by any of the rules that the rest of the world abides by. And he admired that.
Stan finished his Ph.D in ornithology about a year after Richie had, despite being the same age. He loved everything about birds, and like Richie, wants to focus on their conservation. Stan thought that birds were God’s gift to the world, and needed to be protected by all means. He began bird watching at a very early age, making careful note of the ones that he observed, and keeping color coded lists of ones he wanted to one day see.
“Stan my Right Hand Man! What a lovely day to see my favorite bird man. The sun is SHININ’, cancer is CURED, racism is ERADICATED, the planets have ALIGNED. Today, my good chap, is a fantastic afternoon”. Richie promptly plopped himself onto the edge of Stan’s desk buzzing with contagious enthusiasm, meanwhile completely ignoring Stan’s pristine organization of his desk.
“Get off my desk Richard, for the last time this place is not the ‘jungle gym of dumbass’” Stan retorted, but with little malice in his voice. A slight smirk even tugged on the corner of his lips. “You’re on time though, so I’ll let you keep your limbs. Now let’s get to business. Did you bring the grant pap-”
“Duh” Richie cut him off with.
“Okay how about the permission sli-”
“Mhmmmmmmmm”
“You’ve gotten all your vaccinations, corre-”
“YES. Yes, and yes to the next two questions I know are about to tumble out of yo’ damn mouth. So instead, let’s go fi-”
Richie tried to diverge, but was in turn cut off by an equally diligent Stanley. “How did you know what I was going to say, dipshit? So please let me finish, my goodness-”
Richie sharply interrupted once more. “Yes, I’ve prepared the laptops with all the data analysis software, and yes I am in touch with Mike about our dock time. He’s even contacted the others and all is set, what did I tell you Staniel?”. With narrowed eyes, Stan slouched in defeat, “Really? Staniel? You are exhausting. I really don’t know how I’ve put up with your incredulous idiocrities for this freaking long. I must be sick in the head”.
Stan was stubborn and hated to be proven wrong, but had a massive soft spot for Richie in his heart (Stan himself may have called it a sore spot), and knew he could never hate the fucktard. Or even slightly dislike him, despite his annoyances. Richie and Stan had been best friends since childhood where they grew up in the quaint town of Derry, Maine. The air in Derry was stifling, the people cold, and the aura of in its entirety was unwelcoming and intolerable. They were each others only comfort and true friends for years, bonding inseparably over their love for science, the environment, and the creatures that inhabit it. And needless to say, they spent a large chunk of their young lives finding creative ways to escape bullies. Richie could be crass, and disgusting, and blatantly rude but Stan ultimately loved him deeply and considered him family. It was a friendship that most would not encounter in a lifetime, and he was grateful for this friend that he could share his life with.
Both were accepted to UCLA the same year, moved to Los Angeles as a team, and were roommates for their entire bout in college only just recently being able to afford to get their own places (a few blocks being the gaping distance from each other).
Looks like acquiring a doctorate would after all pay off in more ways than one, Stan thought mindlessly.
“Ahhhhhhh you love me, I know ya do Stanny boy! Now, let’s go snatch Bev and grab some grub, my stomach is beginning to digest itself”. And with that, Richie slung a long, gangling arm around Stan’s shoulders, and they departed to retrieve Beverly from the lab, both with jovial smiles on their faces.
________________________________________
KNOCK… KNOCKNOCK……KNOCKNOCKNOCKNOCKNOCKNOCKNOCK
From behind the thick, iron door of the lab Beverly could be quaintly heard shouting “One minute please, I’m getting the samples out of the centrifuges!”
“Bev dearest open the door love, I can’t be waiting all day for this lame centrifuge excuse of booty calling my fine ass, Stanley knows about our insatiable coworker lust!”, Richie sang. Stan groaned and soothingly pinched the bridge of his nose with slight embarrassment, so that his ash blonde curls were forced to shade part of his face.
The door opened in a slow motion, revealing a lively Beverly with raised eyebrows, and a mischievous smirk; her hands boldly rested on both of her hips. Richie loved the way her smile was endearingly crooked, and left front tooth faintly chipped. The perfect people after all, had the most unique imperfections.
“Richie I swear to God I would have gotten you kicked out of this place years ago for sexual harassment if I didn’t find you so entertaining”.
“M’lady you wound me! Now come give papa a hug ya beautiful, wench”. Richie held out both of his arms expectantly and Beverly flung herself into his, as a small child would do to their father after he came home from a long day’s work. They both let out familiar chuckles, and swam in the endearment that they had for one another in that brief moment. Her fiery ginger hair cascaded softly down her back in waves down to her hips as she let herself be immersed in Richie’s bearhug. Richie then placed both his palms on Bev’s shoulders and held her at an arm’s length, staring her straight in the eyes with a mock sternness. The extreme height difference between the two of them would have made this tableau as seen from a stranger very intimidating with Richie standing 6’3”, and Beverly Marsh an average five foot and six inches.
“Now, Miss Marsh. I trust that as my most talented, and may I say favored, field assistant you have prepared my lab materials to endure a long flight as well as waterproofing for the rainforest. The Amazon is unforgiving, and so am I. Do we have an understanding, little dove?”
Beverly lightly shoved Richie’s arms off of her shoulders and snapped into a marine’s saluting position, lowering her voice to crack a “Sir, yes sir!”. As much as Stan found Richie and Beverly’s relationship dysfunctional, he could feel the loving platonic electricity between them and couldn’t help but smile at their banter. They were a refreshing drink of rambunctious tonic water.
Beverly Marsh was in the midst of completing her Master’s degree at UCLA for environmental sciences, and while Richie never had the pleasure of being her professor, he was gifted her assistance for field work and immediately favored her. The other field assistants could go to hell, they all had barbed spikes up their asses and couldn’t handle Richie’s demeanor. Not to mention she was smarter than the others. Maybe not academically (Einstein failed math, Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard yada yada yada), but she had a wit that strongly matched his own and that in itself exemplified enough intelligence. Bev was also wildly freckled, with beautiful red hair that resembled her illustrious personality for adventure. She was an uncontrollable flame; one that could birth innovative creation, and in the blink of an eye cause deadly destruction. Richie hoped he would never have to see that side of Beverly.
_________________________________________
Stan, Beverly, and Richie trolloped towards a small trendy café about a half a block down from the biology department corridors, off of campus to satisfy their growing hunger. Richie ignited the end of a menthol cigarette and puffed on it ferociously to try and curve his appetite, before ashing it on the bottom of his sneaker and tossing it in a proximal trash bin. Just because he littered his lungs didn’t entail him being a litter bug, he was a conservationist remember?
All on the edge of their nerves, at a similar state of “hangry”, they waltz into their favorite local eatery named “Cafe Synapse”***. An appropriate place for a group of biologists to eat at. Stan ordered a black, medium roast coffee complemented with a club sandwich (minus the turkey, due to obvious reasons); Beverly kindly requested french onion soup and side salad along with hibiscus lemonade; Richie ordered a chocolate chip frappuccino and a croissant. The last thing Richie ever needed was more sugar to indulge his ADHD habits, but not even God Almighty himself could stop the Trashmouth from consuming an unhealthy quantity daily.
Stan delicately placed a folded napkin onto his lap, to protect his neatly ironed slacks. He bled order; the tucked in, baby blue button up shirt, the combed curls that could easily become unruly, the freshly polished dress shoes. His cheekbones were even as sharp as his tongue. Everything Stan wore, and did, was thoroughly considered and executed with an impeccable grace.
Except when Stan drank. He could toss back whiskey like nobody’s business and was even roudier than Richie at times. He was the perfect alcohol parallel of a pure Christian girl getting freaky in the sheets behind closed doors as their opposite public persona. And it was priceless to witness, if you were so lucky.
Richie placed both of his hands behind his neck and reclined in his wooden chair to a dangerous incline, “Jesús Crísto Stan, you look like you’re covering up a hard on with that origami napkin on your lap.”
“Fuck you, beep beep Richie” Stan countered with a light-hearted giggle.
Beverly sat forward in her chair and flirtatiously twiddled her finger around a curl framing her face, “Dr. Richie please stop staring at Dr. Stan’s lap like the pervert you are, now that’s just rude”. Richie furrowed his eyebrows, and steadied his chair back on to solid ground. “Just because I float my boat both ways sweetheart doesn’t mean Stan is my type m’kay? Plus Stan denied me access to those pretty li-”
“Oh my god Richie fucking sto-” he intervened.
Richie threw up his hands in a submissive gesture, “Okay okay princess, no more smut I promise.”
“So please do inform Bev and I about your talk with Hanlon. What’s our living situation like? And who are the others joining us on our research trip?” he continued with sincere curiosity.
“Well, Mike said that we’d be living in our own netted huts on the nature preserve. Running water will be provided in certain locations Stan, so don’t worry. I know how much powdering your face at night means to you. And from what I know, Mike will be our host and also act as a guide since he owns and lives on the research station. A fellow named Ben Hanscom will be our medic. A Bill Den-whatever will be our botanist, also there to gain inspiration for his ulterior fictional narratives that he writes for his online blog. I heard he wrote a horror ficlet about a possessed venus fly trap….”. Richie trailed off into a fit of sniggering fidgety squirms imagining a large carnivorous plant taken over by supernatural powers wreaking havoc in Tokyo. That would be an honorable death, Richie thought.
Death by occult man-eating angiosperm. At least it’s not a boring trip to the grave.
“….and I’m not finished yet folks”. Richie motions for a drum roll, and Bev and Stan joyfully play along, using their hands to pat the table.
“We even get our very own nature photographer to document our tomfoolery. Edward Kaspbrak, born and raised in New York City. Oh man, he sounds like a mama’s boy, even more than you Staniel”. Stan followed this remark with presenting Richie with the bird from both hands. Stan never called this action “flipping someone off”. It was giving someone “the bird” or the “double bird”, because god damnit he was an ornithologist with a Ph.D and he deserved this unalienable right to give someone the bird whenever he wanted to. Even rude children.
Little did they know that their future research teammate, Eddie Kaspbrak, had been packed for weeks now and heavily anticipated his Amazonian adventure that would ensue for the next few months.
