Mi Alma | Santiago “Pope” Garcia
Summary: After years of tension, you and Santiago finally get together at your best friend’s wedding. [Film: Triple Frontier] [Post-Film] [Flirting] [Making Out]
Word Count: 6.7k
|Masterlist In Bio|
Frankie and Tiia's wedding is unlike any other you've been to, and you've been to a few. You're the last of your friends to get married, if it ever happens. You're picky with your men, have high standards. It's fine. You don't mind being alone for a while. Drama and games are not in the cards for you so you won't settle for someone. But this isn't about you and your love life, or so you think.
The couple was never quite normal. Frankie coming from a Catholic upbringing and since shunning it to become his own man and follow his heart. Tiia has always been a free spirit and very much into the unknown and world around her. They make an interesting yet perfect match and their wedding is no run of the mill church ceremony with a bunch of people in pews for hours on end. No. They have quite the opposite.
For starters the wedding is outdoors, a forested area just behind the house Frankie and Tiia bought last year. It's beautiful, the trees in full bloom, greenery as far as the eye can see. There wasn't a ton of prep to be done for the ceremony, just setting up chairs and arranging flowers among the natural foliage. Orange and yellow, those are Tiia's colors. Roses, carnations, peonies, you name it. She took everything the florist could get her in those colors. Frankie didn't care, he said he would love anything she loves. There is an arch made of wood that a friend of yours specially crafted just for the happy couple. It's their wedding gift from him, as Tiia will put it in her garden after the ceremony.
The day Tiia showed you her dress you knew that the wedding would be magical. It's non traditional of course, very Greek goddess meets fairy queen. Draped white and cream fabric, gold accents, braided embellishments. It's incredible and she looks completely stunning in it. It isn't until the day of the wedding that you see her veil, natural colored faux antlers made into a crown like setting atop her head. She is beautiful.
You find yourself on the day of the wedding getting ready and waiting for the ceremony to start. You've not been told who you are to walk with. Tiia said she didn't tell any of the bridesmaids who they're walking with because she didn't want to cause any problems. Honestly you're not sure what that means, you only know that your friend Caiti would have a problem if she was paired up with Benny because of a past relationship. You check your reflection in the small mirror decor beside the door you're meant to go out. You look fine. Good. Great actually. You twist your finger around a loose bit of hair by your temple and smooth the top of the dress that matches Tiia's flowy one. Damn good.
"You're up." Says Tiia's brother, opening the patio doors for you.
You take a deep breath, pull up the hem of your dress and step out. The plan is that you meet your groomsman at the end of the wrap around deck and you walk to the forest together. You can't help but wonder who it will be. Any of the guys would be great, you're familiar with them all. Benny? He is single currently. Will? No, his fiance is in the bridal party. Frankie's brother? Maybe but...no. Santiago. Oh Lord have mercy. If it's Santiago you're going to have to reach deep into yourself and find some inner calm. Every time the two of you are together with the crew it's like fire. It is undeniable the way you connect but you have never- shit.
At the end of the deck is Santiago. He looks insanely...tempting. You say a prayer to any force listening. Did he have to look so good? Tailored slacks, a deep blue button down, no tie and sleeve rolled up, even the watch on his wrist is sexy. Fucking hell you could just turn around and run back into the house. Demand another partner.
"Hermosa..." Santiago mutters as you approach.
"What's that?"
Santiago snaps his eyes to yours and smiles warmly. "Nothing, I was just thinking out loud." He offers his arm and you take it.
"What does that mean? Hermosa?"
He leads you carefully down the steps into the grass. "It means beautiful."
"Oh...oh!" You flush, heat rising from your chest. "Thank you."
Santiago chuckles softly and lifts your hand to kiss it. "Every woman should be told they look beautiful."
"You're a sweet talker today."
"I've had a drink or two. Frankie and I had a talk before the wedding, pre marital nerves."
"I can't imagine. I've never gotten that far into a relationship."
Santiago's eyes meet yours as you glance over to gauge his reaction. He raises his eyebrows and you raise yours. It's always like this. Silent conversations. They're louder than any words you've ever exchanged. "Are you excited for Tiia?"
"Through the roof. She hasn't shut up about Frankie since they met. I'm glad she's found her person."
"Me too." He stops as you arrive at the archway. "You never know when you'll meet the right person."
"Yeah, I guess so."
He steps away, touch lingering on your hand as he parts. "Who knows, maybe you've already met them."
You look at him and he says nothing more, just gives a little smile. He knows exactly what he's doing. Fueling the fire. That's it. This wedding, you're getting Santiago Garcia.
______________________
The entire ceremony you stared at each other and it is unlike ever before, there was no conversation in your eyes. It was just a game of who could out stare who. Until Frankie began reading his vows, then Santiago's gaze changed. It flicked between you and Frankie, soft and loving.
There were tears, actual tears when Frankie began to talk about how he felt about Tiia and their bond. All of the guys were crying, proud of their best friend to be so happy and excited to take this step in his life. But Santiago...he couldn't look away from you. You try not to look away from Tiia and Frankie, knowing they deserve your undivided attention and not Santiago. It's hard. Santiago's eyes...they're undeniable, irresistible, commanding. He is making it hard not to think about what it would be like to be in your friends shoes, or lack thereof because she is actually barefoot under that dress. What would a wedding with Santiago look like? A beautiful tailored suit, beard grown out a bit for sure, messy curls, bowtie or regular tie. Hmm. And your dress, white or blush? Formal or fun? You've never thought about your own wedding and yet here you are just-
You snap out of your dream world when the guests begin to clap, the ceremony is over. You raise your hands and clap, smiling at your friends. Santiago gestures for you to join him as the bride and groom walk back down the path. You're meant to follow after, being in the wedding party and all.
Santiago's hand slides across your lower back the moment you're in reach. You swear you can feel your skin tingle all the way up to the back of your neck. "That was incredible."
"It was a very pretty ceremony."
"Are you feeling well?"
You frown and look at him, he raises his eyebrows. "Yes? Do I look ill?"
He shakes his head. "Not in the slightest. You looked...distracted."
"Can't say I wasn't."
Santiago gives a soft knowing hum in response and nothing more. Kindling. He's throwing kindling into this fire now. The son of a bitch. No. You would never call him that. He's too good. "Ride with me?" He says and you realize you've walked together to the front of the house where everyone is parked.
"I-...Benny."
"Benny?"
"I promised Benny I'd ride with him. I'm supposed to be his DD tonight and care for his truck should he get a little out of hand."
Santiago smiles softly. "I see. I'll meet you at the hall then?"
You nod.
He lays a hand on your cheek and presses a kiss to the opposite side. "Drive safe."
Your heart threatens to explode and you're stuck standing there like a deer in headlights. There is no way you're going to survive this wedding.

The reception is when things really kick off, it usually is though isn't it. The reception is held at a party rental hall in town, their house not being ready for so many guests and a large dinner and dancing. You ride with Benny, having to just take a moment and figure out what your next move is with Santiago.
"You and Pope, huh?" Benny says, looking over at you. "When's that happening?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Oh come on anyone with eyes could see you two tryin’ to undress each other up there."
You stifle a noise of protest because you know that if you make a scene about it then Benny will be even nosier. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Yeah alright sweetheart." Benny laughs to himself, a quick breathy little chuckle. "If a girl looked at me like that for an hour, we'd be kicking boots in the back of this truck right now."
"You're gross Benny."
"Never said I wasn't." He grins and does a little tongue click. "Pope is a good man, the best I know. Give'em a chance."
"Sure, thanks for the pep talk Benny."
"Anytime sweetheart."
Once you arrive at the reception you immediately run into Santiago. No, literally you smack into him when you step in the doors. He seemed to be on his way outside as you were going in. His familiar spicy cologne flls your nose and your eyes cross for a moment. You know it's him before he speaks, before you see his face.
His hand comes up, steadying you with it on your back. "Easy there, honey."
Honey. Fuck. You're so fucked. "Sorry, I was just trying to go in."
"Mmm. I forgot my phone in the car, I'll be back."
"I'll be seated?" You say awkwardly.
He chuckles and steps away from you. "Go on, don't wait for me."
"I wasn't going to?" You step in and look around for your table. It should be near the front. You look for the names and sure enough there you are right next to... Santiago. "Great."
"Is something wrong?"
You jump and Will chuckles. "No, I'm fine."
"Where'd Pope go?"
"His phone."
Will nods. "Have you seen Benny?"
You shrug. "We drove together but I've no idea where he went. Check the bar?"
"I checked there, I bet he's out back." Will sighs and heads for the emergency exit door that's propped open at the far end of the building.
You take a seat and Santiago returns, sliding behind you and taking his seat next to you. The chairs are close, the table being a little small for the amount of people seated at it. You can feel Santiago's warmth, his scent filling your nose. Oh how you love that cologne. It's one of two he's worn since you met and this one just nails it right on the head. If you knew the brand you would buy it and drown yourself in it.
His hand comes down on your thigh and you feel like the world has stopped and begun to burn around you. It is absolutely no mistake, he knows what he's doing. His fingers flex against the loose fabric of the dress and it falls open a bit along the side split, exposing your skin beneath.
Will stands from the end of your table and taps his glass a few times. He is going to make a speech. Of course, it's Will and he is the best speech giver you've ever met. You try to distract yourself, wondering how many wedding speeches he has given. If you ask him he will know. If you ask him how many of anything he has or does he will know. You smile to yourself, eyes flicking to Santiago. Will is the reason any of this is happening. If he hadn't given Santiago the coordinates to the ravine with Lorea's money, Santiago would have never gone after it, never gifted the wedding fund to Tiia and Frankie.
Santiago's hand shifts and you're acutely aware of its position further up your leg, his pinky finger brushing your tender inner thigh. Should you tell him to stop? He didn't ask to touch you, and you didn't tell him yes or no. Did he need to ask though? Honestly you don't mind aside from the fact that it's driving you crazy. He must know what he is doing to you, how you feel. He has always been physically affectionate with everyone, hugging, cheek kisses, hands on arms and backs. His love language is very obviously touching.
Will begins to wrap up, and you raise your glass with everyone else to toast. Santiago grabs his glass with his non dominant hand, not letting your thigh go. "To many years of love, happiness and joy. Mr. and Mrs. Morales!"
"I'm up next." Santiago says, giving you a squeeze that makes your stomach jump.
You watch him stand and he taps his glass. You have no idea why but your heart is pounding in your chest. His ass is in perfect view, his thighs...oh his thighs. You decide to get a little retribution for the thigh touching and you lay your hand on the back of his leg, just above the bend of his knee. It's not much, just a gentle touch and nowhere near sexual. You're sure he's burning up though.
"Tiia, the day Frankie met you I knew his fate was sealed. I had not once seen my brother so engrossed in a woman than when he talked about you. When you and I finally met, and I saw that red hair of yours, I knew there was something special. Hermana, eres fuego. You have made Frankie a better man, a calmer and more gentle man. Without you I don't know where he would be." Santiago raises his glass higher. "I hope to find a love like yours someday. Cheers to new family, life and a beautiful union!"
Your hand falls from his leg as he sits down and he slides his back over your thigh. "That was a nice speech," you whisper.
"Thank you. I know it wasn't nearly as long and detailed as Will's but I tried." He swipes his thumb back and forth. "Even if I had a little bit of a distraction."
You smile and give him an innocent look.
"Malo..." He mutters softly and tears his gaze from yours to Benny who's standing at the table opposite.
You reach out and run your hand over his shoulder, settling with it on the back of his neck. Your fingers slip into the curls there and he lets out a subtle shaky breath that you don't miss for a second. Two can participate in his game of touches and you're going to play hardball.
Benny makes his speech, short but sweet and meaningful. Tom's wife is up next. Before she stands you make eye contact with Tiia. You could feel her stare before you caught it. She gives a little smirk.
"Honey, you're going to make me fall asleep." Santiago whispers, ducking his head close to you after a minute or two.
"That's not quite my goal."
He slips his hand down your inner thigh and you feel heat swell between your legs. "What is your goal?"
"What is your goal, Santiago."
"I-"
"Thank you everyone for coming and for your well wishes. It means the world to Tiia and I that we're surrounded by so much love." Frankie says and everyone cheers softly. "Let's have dinner and cake!"
"Bride or groom?" Santiago asks, close to your ear.
"H-Huh?"
"The cakes. Bride or groom's cake?" He points to the table with the two cakes on it. "I'll get you a piece."
You try to remember what kind they both are but you're drawing a blank. All you can focus on is Santiago and you feel bad. This day should be about your friends and here you are wetting your fucking pants for Santiago Garcia. Christ.
"Honey?" He purrs and your mouth falls open as he squeezes your thigh. "I'll get one of each."
"Y-yeah. "
Santiago stands and leaves the table. The lack of heat on your leg is a shock. You're still burning up but it's nowhere near as bad as when he's close. Tiia comes over and leans against your table, she grins knowingly at you.
"How's it going over here?"
"Fine? Should it not be?"
"Is he being nice?"
"Santi?"
"Santi?"
You flush and lean your head into your hand. "Santiago. Yes, he's being nice. Why? He is always a sweetheart."
Santiago returns with two plates of cake and sets them on the table. He grabs Tiia's cheek and gives her a kiss to the temple. "Hermana."
"Problema." Tiia giggles and Santiago rolls his eyes.
"I am not trouble." He takes his seat beside you and gives a pointed look at Frankie nearby laughing with Will and Benny. "Hay problema."
Tiia pushes Santiago's head and he laughs. "Frankie is not trouble! He's a good boy."
"Mmmm." Santiago says, raising his eyebrows. "Good boys don't have the most fun." He catches your gaze and winks.
"You're insufferable. Enjoy the cake, lovely." Tiia says to you and heads off to meet her new husband.
Santiago dips his fork into the slice of white and yellow frosted cake, the bride's cake, and brings it up to your lips. "Try it?"
"I can feed myself," you giggle and he bumps the frosted bit against your lips. You open and take the cake in. It's delicious and you remember now. It's an apple spiced white cake with caramel cream center.
"Good?" He asks, cutting a bit for himself. "Oh wow that's amazing."
You nod and reach for your own fork but Santiago pushes it away. "Hey-"
"I got it." He smirks, cutting a slice of the groom's cake. Chocolate with butter rum filling. "Open up."
"Give me my fork, Santiago."
He shakes his head and you reach for it. He knocks your hand away and holds your wrist loosely. "Ah, I said open up."
"Santi..."
His eyes go darker than you've ever seen and you imagine they must be lust filled to be so heavy. "Open up." He says once more, but this time with more authority.
You open your mouth obediently and he presses the fork down gently to your tongue as he slides it out. "Mmmm."
"Better than the last one?" He asks, cutting another piece and holding it up for you. You take it in as well and he smiles.
This is far too intimate. What the fuck are you doing? You're not even together, you're not dating, neither of you have explicitly said this was happening. Not to mention you're at your friend's wedding, in front of people and he's... he's driving you insane.
"Excuse me." You mutter softly, pushing away from the table and leaving a very confused Santiago behind. You head for the emergency exit and take a deep breath of the cool spring air as you step outside. You need to breathe.
___________________
Minutes tick by as you sit on the fence post that blocks a patio area from the parking lot. You figured Santiago would have come for you by now, but you didn't expect it. He's too sweet to impede upon your personal space when he knows you definitely needed it because of his actions. Footsteps behind you draw your attention away from the passing traffic on the road nearby. It's Will.
"What're you doing out here all alone?"
"Getting some fresh air."
"I can understand that." Will takes a seat next to you. "I saw you head out here earlier. I figured I'd give you a little bit before coming to check on you."
"Thanks. Am I missing anything?"
"Tiia is going to throw the bouquet soon. Do you want to catch it?"
You laugh softly to yourself. Do you want to? Do you want to be the next friend to marry? You're the only one not married besides Benny. The rest of the guests are family or friends who are married. "Maybe Benny should give it a try."
Will snorts and you laugh at the sound. "You'd need tempered steel to tie that man down. He's too wild, too free to settle down."
"Yeah, Benny is...Benny."
Will taps your arm with the back of his hand. "C'mon, let's go see who gets the bouquet."
"Alright." You slide off the fence and head back into the hall with Will.
Inside you see a crowd of people near the bride and grooms table. Tiia has her back to the crowd and you watch as she swings the bundle of flowers backwards. There is a collective gasp and you strain to see who caught the flowers.
As the crowd clears you see Santiago standing there with the bouquet. He's laughing, saying something to Frankie's aunt nearby and then he sees you. Your heart races. He gestures for you to come to him.
"Why did you-"
"For you." He holds the bouquet up and kisses your cheek. "I thought you might want them."
"Thank you. They're pretty."
"Are you okay?"
"Huh? Yeah, why- oh. When I went outside. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to just run out on you." You lick your lips and look down from his gaze. "I just needed some air."
Santiago cups your cheek. "Hey, look at me."
You look at him and it's a mistake. Your heart pounds, threatening to break through your ribs. "Yes?"
He leans in whispers, "Did I go too far earlier?"
"The cake?"
He nods.
"It was unexpected, but no." You can feel a flush rising in your chest. "I mean you've always been affectionate but we haven't really...talked about it."
Santiago chuckles softly. "I suppose we haven't. It's always been there but we've never acknowledged it. Are you uncomfortable? I know I'm a few years older and-"
"Santiago."
"Yes?"
"We're in the middle of a wedding. Maybe we should discuss this later? More privately?" You look around at the crowd that's pretty much dispersed.
He cracks a sheepish smile and tucks a bit of hair behind your ear, gliding his fingertips along your cheek before bumping your lip with his thumb. "Mas tarde, cariña," he murmurs.
You lick your lip where he touched and he doesn't miss it, eyes snapping to your mouth. "You know that I know limited Spanish."
"I said we'll talk later." He puts his arm around you and guides you toward your table. "Let's clear the way for the married couple's first dance."
_____________________
The first dance doesn't happen right away. The removal of the garter happens first. For those unfamiliar, it's like the tossing of the bouquet but generally for the men. The husband removes his wife's garter, a thin band of fabric worn around the thigh, and tosses it to the crowd. The one who catches it is said to be the next to marry. It's a symbol of good luck.
You watch as Tiia takes a seat in a chair brought out to the center floor. She is bright pink and you can't help but laugh a little. Frankie comes around the chair, taking her hand and kissing it gently. He says something you can't make out, but Tiia smiles.
"Come on Frankie!" Benny hollers.
"Oh be quiet Benny!" Frankie quips, flipping off his friend. "Not like you want it!"
"The hell I don't!"
Everyone laughs.
Santiago's hand slides over your knee, pushing the dress aside and allowing it to fall open. He can't keep his hands off of you it seems.
Frankie kneels down and pushes Tiia's dress up to expose her legs.
Santiago's hand inches up your leg, massaging his fingertips tenderly into the soft skin. You spare him a glance and his focus seems to be on the married couple like everyone else.
Frankie leans in and grabs the garter with his teeth and the guests cheer him on. You attempt to clap but your brain is elsewhere, short circuiting on the arousal nerves between your legs.
"Do you want it?" Santiago purrs in your ear and you shiver. Why did that have to sound like such a loaded question. Do you want what? Him? The garter? His attention?
"W-what?"
"The garter."
You turn your head to look at him and reply when suddenly you're smacked in the face with something. You jump, startled by the sudden sensation, and look down at the table where the white garter is sitting on it.
Somewhere Benny is hollering wildly, and Frankie says something along the lines of how you're the lucky lady. You don't hear it really because Santiago grabs the garter and rubs it between his fingers, smiling at you playfully. His other hand is still on your leg, farther up and dangerously close to your underwear.
"I'd love to see you in this." He says, fingers flexing on your skin. "And nothing else."
"Santiago!" You whisper sharply and he leans in close.
His lips meet yours and your heart stops. The world stops. His hand leaves your thigh and slides around to your hip, the other cradles your head, angling your face for better access.
It's like years of tension have finally broken and now it's coming out like breach in a dam. You reach for him, not sure what to grab but you land on his hair and his shoulder. He deepens the kiss, tongue pushing past your lips to roll against yours. He tastes like minty gum and you can't get enough.
He grips your hips with both hands and hauls you over onto his lap. The chair creaks under the weight of two bodies. You can't care, this is a dream come true. You don't want to stop kissing him because if you do, it feels like it might never happen again.
"Baby," Santiago groans into your mouth as you roll your hips down against his lap, desperate for some release. "Baby we gotta stop."
"No," you lick into his mouth desperately and he chases your lips, biting gently to slow you down.
His hand finds your hair and grips firmly, pulling you back. "Listen to me."
You stare at him, eyes locked on to his. They're so full of promises of what's to come. He looks as wrecked as you do, you're sure. "Yes?"
He grins slowly, leaning in for a soft kiss. "God you're beautiful like this."
You try to return the kiss, chasing his lips as he pulls back but his grip in your hair is firm.
"We're still at the wedding." He says softly. "I don't think we should be grinding on each other in such a public setting."
You lean back, settling yourself back on his thighs. Reality comes creeping in, a cold rush of embarrassment rising up your spine. He's right. You're at the wedding still, everyone can see you right now. You got so caught up in the euphoria that you forgot where you were.
"Santiago, you son of a bitch." Benny says from behind you. "You finally did it."
You turn and look back while Santiago leans over to see Benny. "Go away."
"Oh I will, I'll leave you two to face suck like teenagers. I just wanted to say it's about time. How was it?"
"Benny." Santiago says warningly.
You look between the two of them. "How was the kiss?"
Benny nods.
"Good, really good? Why?"
Santiago groans.
"Do you know why we call him Pope?" Benny asks and you shake your head. "It's because he brings you closer to God when he gets his hands on you."
"Benny! Fuck off!" Santiago shouts and throws a fork on the table at him. Benny dodges the projectile and runs off laughing. "God damn menace."
You run your hand through his curls, brushing your thumb over a little spot of grays peeking through. "Is that true?"
"Is what true? The Pope thing?"
"Yeah. Is that why they call you Pope?"
Santiago smiles softly. "It is. It's stupid and childish but-"
"I like it." You slide off his lap and lean in close to his ear. "You took me closer to God with a kiss, I can only imagine what more will be like." You grab his hand and before he can respond you step back, pulling his arm up. "Dance with me?"
_____________________
You and Santiago dance for a long time, slow and sweet. After about the tenth song he kisses your temple and says he needs to take a seat, his knees are killing him. You part from him and he goes to sit with Will and Frankie who are near the bar. You turn and head to the bride and grooms table to sit with Tiia.
"Hey you," Tiia says with a playful smirk. "I thought you were gonna get eaten alive earlier."
"I'm sorry." You sink down into Frankie's chair and she laughs. "I just lost my mind for a few minutes there. Was everyone staring?"
"No, everyone got up to dance and get food from the buffett. I noticed, obviously, because I've been watching you all night."
"Creepy."
Tiia pushes your shoulder. "Oh shut up. I set you up, but I never could have guessed this outcome."
"You set me up?"
"Yeah? I picked Santiago to be your best man. I knew the two of you have had chemistry since you met. I just gave you a little nudge in the right direction." She looks smug as she takes a sip of her wine. "You're welcome."
"You're a troublemaker."
"Matchmaker, thank you."
You roll your eyes. "Maybe too good of a match maker. I sucked face while you had your first dance."
She laughs, nearly spitting out her wine. "I don't need everyone to watch me dance with my husband to validate our marriage. You're my best friend, the fact that you are just as happy on my wedding day as I am, that means the world to me. You deserve a good man, and Santiago is a very good man."
"You really aren't mad I didn't pay attention?"
"Nope, because I can guarantee you I'll be all over Frankie at your wedding."
"My wedding? Yeah we'll be in our sixties before that happens." You pick at a spot on the front of your dress, directing your focus elsewhere in hopes of ending this conversation. "No one wants to marry me."
Tiia kicks you. "Bullshit. If you asked Santiago right now to run away and get married at a little chapel in Vegas he'd say yes."
"No he wouldn't. He's not reckless."
"Yes, he is. When it comes to you there is nothing he wouldn't do."
"Whatever."
"Whatever," she says mockingly. "Do you have any idea what he has told Frankie?"
You narrow your eyes. "You're lying."
"Have I ever lied to you?"
"Once. A birthday present that I figured out."
Tiia rolls her eyes. "That doesn't count."
"Why would Frankie tell you about what he and Santiago discuss?"
"Because I'm nosey and I ask. Plus, you're my best friend and you two have obvious chemistry."
"So what did he say?"
Tiia points to Santiago as he makes his way across the room. "Why don't you ask him yourself?"
"Tiia!"
"What's my two favorite women chatting about huh?" Santiago smiles and hands you a glass.
You look down into the glass. You can't drink today, you're Benny's designated driver.
"It's non alcoholic, don't worry."
"Thank you."
"She doesn't need alcohol to get a little crazy." Tiia teases, elbowing you from her seat. "She has a better drug, right Pope?"
Santiago chuckles. "You're never going to let us live that moment down huh?"
"Never. I was surprised you didn't just take her to the bathroom."
"Tiia!" You shove her and she cackles. "God!"
"I'm teasing you. Seriously, if you guys wanna get out of here and have a little fun I'll get someone to take Benny home." Tiia looks across the way at the table where Benny is telling some animated story. "Or he can sleep on the couch at me and Frankie's house. We'll drop him off before we go to the hotel."
Santiago shakes his head. "I'm not stepping out on your wedding, and I'm sorry for the behavior earlier. It's not the right time or place."
"You two are a match. She said the same thing when she came over. I'm not mad, I'm happy you're happy." Tiia stands and walks around the table to stand before Santiago. She lays a hand on his cheek before giving it a hard pat. "Problema."
"Un poco."
"Oh no you're big trouble, not little trouble." She says and shoves his head back playfully. "Go, make my girl happy."
Santiago smiles and kisses her forehead. "You heard the lady." He offers his hand to you. "Can I take you home?"
"One more dance?"
"I think I can manage that."
You follow Santiago out onto the dancefloor, hand in his as he lays his other on your waist. A slow song comes on, one you've heard a few times on the radio but never paid much attention to.
"I'm sorry about earlier." He says softly out of nowhere.
"I'm just as much to blame."
"I just got a little ahead of myself, like Benny said, I felt like a horny teenager."
You giggle and lean your head on his shoulder. "It's been a while, and we built this tension to a boiling point. We were bound to snap someday."
Santiago runs his hand up your back and cradles your neck loosely. "Have I told you how beautiful you are tonight?"
"Yes, but I don't mind hearing it again."
He drops his head to your ear and places a little kiss on the outer shell. "You'd look even more beautiful in my bedroom."
A hot flush warms your cheeks. "Santi...cool it."
"I can't help it." He grins and you hear rather than see it. "I just want to eat you up."
"We can stay a bit longer." You kiss his throat and he lets out a quiet groan that you relish in, grinning big ear to ear against his skin. "It'll do you good to wait. You'll want it more."
_____________________
The sound of a cell phone ringing rips you from a deep sleep. It's unfamiliar, not your ringtone but shrill and annoying nonetheless. The room is bright, the sun shining through the cream colored blinds and past the sheer curtains. Everything is familiar but like you had seen it in a dream, nothing was quite the same as you remember. You sit up and look around. Yes. It's the same as last night, the lighting makes things look different is all.
"Make it stop," Santiago groans from beside you.
"I don't know where it is." You pat around the blankets, trying to find the source of noise. "It's your phone."
"Fuck." He sits up and you get a full view of his strong, bare back in the bright daylight. There are a few scars, but one big one just behind his shoulder gets your attention. It looks strange, like a paint splatter of pink skin against his tan complexion.
You reach out to touch the scar, trace it curiously. What on Earth made a scar like that. "Santi?"
"Just a minute baby." He leans over and your hand falls to the bed. He comes back up with the phone in hand and swipes the screen to deny the call.
You lay back and he crawls under the covers beside you.
"Now, good morning." He grins, touching your nose and you sniffle. "I hope you're not too sore."
"Me?" You giggle, rolling to face him head on. "I'd be more worried about you."
Santiago chuckles. "Because of my knees?"
"Yeah and your back." You slide your hand over his shoulder and explore the scar with your fingertips. "What's this one from?"
"Do you really want to know?"
"Mmhmm."
"A bullet." He takes your hand away and threads his fingers between yours. "A sniper when I was twenty seven. We were on a mission somewhere in the Ukraine. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and boom." He chuckles softly. "It went straight through. I suppose I'm lucky, they were clearly aiming for something more vital and missed."
You play with his fingers and he watches. What do you say? Sorry? Wow? You know Santiago and the guys are ex military special forces. You know they all have their scars and close call stories. You've heard the others tell them over and over but Santiago...he has always been quiet.
"It's a lot to take in." He murmurs, bringing your knuckles up to kiss.
You laugh softly, more to yourself than anything. "I broke my leg falling out of a tree once."
Santiago chuckles. "Bet that hurt." He kisses your knuckles again and lets his lips linger. "It's okay if you're not sure how to respond."
"Thank you," you mutter sheepishly.
His phone starts ringing again and he sighs. He rolls over and grabs it, bringing it back to lay between the two of you. "It's Frankie."
"Answer it."
"Should I? You don't mind?"
You shake your head. "He might need you."
Santiago swipes to answer and presses the phone to his ear. "Buenos dias pendejo."
You smile and he gives you a cheeky grin. That's a little bit of Spanish you do know. "Be nice."
He mouths a quick, 'No' before speaking again. "Why are you calling me after your wedding night? Shouldn't you and Tiia be sleeping? I didn't give you that money to wake me up at the crack of dawn when you're meant to be boarding a plane to Hawaii for your honeymoon in a few hours."
"Hawaii sounds good." You snuggle down into the blankets, imagining the warm sun on your body.
"Yes she's fine." Santiago chuckles softly. "Did you want to talk to her?"
You raise your eyebrows and he gives you a wink.
"Here you go." He passes you the phone and you press it to your ear.
"Hello?"
"Did that dick make you stupid?" Tiia asks through a laugh.
"Shut up!" You laugh, rolling over onto your back. Santiago's arm snakes across your waist and he pulls you close, face in your shoulder. "I'll hang up on you."
"Really though, did you guys have a good night? I just wanted Frankie to call and make sure you got home okay."
"Yes, we got home okay. It was a good night."
Santiago hums against your skin, biting playfully at your jaw. "It could be a better morning."
"Which one of you said I love you first?"
"Tiia."
"I know it happened."
"Goodbye Tiia, I'm hanging up now."
"Oh you-"
You toss the phone into the pillows and close your eyes. Santiago lazily kisses your neck, his short beard giving you a bit of a burn on your shoulder.
"It was me." He whispers between kisses.
"Hmm?"
"I said it first."
"You could hear her?" You shift around and lay so you're face to face agan.
He nods. “Do you remember?"
"Mmm. You said I love you, mallma?"
He presses a kiss to your lips. "It's mi alma. Do you want to know what that means?"
"Yes."
"It means, my soul." He runs a hand through your hair and brings you close for another kiss. "It's a pet name for someone you really care deeply for."
You grip his back and press your forehead to his. You give a sheepish smile. "How do you say I love you again?"
"Te amo."
"Te amo, Santiago."
He grins and chuckles softly. "We'll work on the accent."
"Good thing I have the best teacher."
"Yes you do."
"Until then," You tuck your face into his neck and he threads a hand in your hair. "I love you."
"I love you too."

You Belong With Me (a billy hargrove x oc fic)
Note: Thank you all for reading the first chapter! Big prom is happening now and things don’t go as planned.
–Alison Gilbert wasn’t popular like the other girls at Hawkins High. Invisible actually. A careless single mother and a stuck up best friend made that much easy. Everything changes when the new King, Billy Hargrove, sets his sights on her. A secret prank tears them apart but it might be what brings them together too. Will love conquer all?–
two.
Alison found herself excited for the dance. Heather didn’t believe it. Billy Hargrove asking her friend. The night came sooner than expected.
A few spritzes of perfume completed her look. Her mother did her hair in big blond curls before leaving for a date. Alison wore a metallic, purple dress with a big skirt. It made her waist smaller and it didn’t make her cleavage look half bad also. She felt like a princess tonight as she looked at herself in the mirror.
Billy knocked at the door in a blue rental suit with his shirt undone. He looked amazing and her feet shuffled nervously. Billy’s eyes checked her out.
“Whoa, you look amazing.”
“Thank you.” She said shyly. Alison followed him to his camaro and they drove off. Prom was already bumping with loud music and teens going in.
“Are you nervous, Ali?”
“A little.” She admitted so Billy came around the car and opened the door. “What a gentleman, Hargrove.”
“I got you, Gilbert.” He took her hand and led her inside. Metallic streamers were everywhere with bright lights blinking. Seniors dancing too. Alison got closer to Billy.
“Hey, man.” Tommy came out of the crowd. “Look who shows up with you. Wow, Gilbert, you don’t look half bad. If you get tired of dancing with this guy come find me.” Alison said nothing and Billy rolled his eyes.
“Ignore him.” Billy brought Alison to the punchbowl and poured her a cup. “It’s not spiked.” He laughed
“Billy,” She got nervous again, “why did you bring me here?”
“I just wanted to.” Billy felt guilty again and took her hand. A slow song started. “C’mon, let’s dance.”
“I don’t know how.”
“We just pretend and sway with everyone.” Billy grabed her waist. “Like this.” Alison put her hands on his shoulders to hold on. He made her smile wider. This could be the best night she had in a long time.
“Not bad.” She said. Alison met Billy’s eyes and fell harder. She felt flower petals whirling around her stomach kinda like a butterfly’s wings. They burrowed deep to bloom inside her. Big, vibrant colors she hid from the world spinning to unfurl. Billy looked into her soul and saw the colors dance neon. She was just so pretty.
“You’re beautiful.” He said. Alison put her head on his shoulder.
“I’m having a really nice time, Billy.” She smiled up at him and came to her toes. Gave him a peck on the lips so inordinate in sweetness. He began to fall too.
“Good.” Billy kissed her again. He really liked this girl. He looked at Tommy and Carol across the way whispering and dancing. They were probably making fun of them. “Hey can you give me a second?”
“Oh,” she frowned, “sure, okay.” Alison went back to the punchbowl and Billy went to see his friends. “Hey, Heather.”
“You look so cute, I almost didn’t recognize you, Alison.” Heather took Steve’s hand next to her. “We’re going to go back and dance now.” She flicked her hair and took Steve away before he could speak.
Alison sniffled and tried to see Billy again. Talking heatedly with Tommy and Carol who were just laughing back at him. Billy shoved Tommy and turned before the principal went to the microphone.
“The moment you all waited for! Hawkins King and Queen.” A drum rolled. “Billy Hargrove and Carol Perkins!”
Students clapped before Billy was pushed onstage. Carol swung her hips and joined him. They got crowns and she stole Billy’s hand. Alison felt herself want to cry so Tommy came over.
“You know we paid Hargrove to take you here,” he revealed in a mean tone, “one hundred bucks.”
“What?” Alison gasped in shock. “He wouldn’t.”
“It gets better.” Tommy pointed and Carol pulled Billy in for a kiss. Students clapped louder and called out. Tommy laughed too as Alison burst into tears and started to run off. She got outside when Billy caught up with her.
“Alison, I didn’t know she was going to kiss me!”
“They paid you to take me?” She cried at him and pushed him off her. Billy felt guilty again.
“No, but I really like you.” He begged and took her wrist.
“Let go of me! I thought you...” Alison shook and yanked away because she couldn’t be near him. A scream came up her throat but it didn’t leave. She hated herself for believing it all. “Leave me alone, Billy! I hate you!”
“Alison, it’s not like that!” Billy called after her but she began to run away. Alison sprinted in her heels into the dark streets. She cried all the way. “Ali, wait!”
Alison was gone.
-
Sad chapter but enjoy it! Until the next one! Ali may or may not forgive him hehe. Thank you

"Three Dark Kings”
(This is mostly for my own amusement, but for anyone who is confused, interested, or thinks I’ve lost my mind, see the explanation at the bottom of the post under the ‘Keep Reading’ line.)
Three dark queens
Are born in a glen.
Sweet little triplets
Will never be friends
Three dark sisters,
All fair to be seen.
Two to devour,
And one to be Queen.
Mab stared down into the crib, her hands gripping the edge of the bars so tightly they were beginning to shake. The child did not wake though, but remained fast asleep, his tiny thumb stuck into his mouth, his dark hair falling around his round face. His eyes had been open earlier, bright, and silver, so unlike her own, but now lay shut as he dozed. None of her sons had inherited her eyes. She had thought that was a good sign. Had hoped. Maybe even prayed, in her weaker moments. But praying was for mortals who believed in a merciful deity; one who would give them peace and happiness.
Mab’s lips pursed into a thin line of rage. The Goddess had never been merciful. Never granted peace or happiness to the people of her island. No…the Goddess had been cruel, and selfish. Just like the Queens she had sacrificed to her name. Like the sisters Mab had killed to gain her own title.
She had been relieved when Sage had been born. Been as close to tears as she had ever been in her entire life to hear the healer’s proclamation of a single newborn son. She had thought it meant the end. That, finally, she was free. The the only death she needed to fear or inflict would come from the hands of strangers, and not her own kin. His green eyes had been a blessing. Or so she’d thought. Rowan’s blue eyes were even more welcome. Cool and clear like the water she so loved, that she had used to build her kingdom.
Now her youngest child, mere days old and with his silver eyes, put fear in her heart. How long had it been since she’d been truly afraid? Decades…centuries, perhaps.
That they were boys did not seem to matter, or that they were not triplets, or that none of them shared her pitch black eyes… The same cold, gripping nausea that had held her all those long years ago was back, and as she stared down at her son, she wanted to scream aloud.
Perhaps it would have been different, if Sage hadn’t come home just days ago with the wolf trailing at his side with no explanation. Or if the third report of Rowan surviving what should have been a lethal poisoning hadn’t reached her ears.
Mab bit back a shriek of rage as she glared down at her youngest son, hating him. Hating them all.
She left the room before she could do any damage, and stood in the hall, breathing deeply, her hands over her face. No one was there to witness her losing her composure. She had made sure that none in the palace but herself and her most trusted servants were permitted near the newborn child. Even Sage and Rowan were not allowed…and now she wondered if perhaps she had known all along this would happen. That she had been a fool to believe she had really escaped.
She raised her head, lifting her eyes to stare at the ceiling.
“Are you laughing?” she whispered, her hands trembling as she pressed them over her mouth. “Are you mocking me? Did you have fun, making me believe it was over?”
If the Goddess heard her, she did not answer.
Mab closed her eyes, feeling the icy cold sickness creeping through her stomach, clenching around her heart.
Explanation (because I’m sure some people have questions):
So, because I’m stuck at a desk for 8 hours a day at my job, I rely heavily on audiobooks to get me through the day, and thanks to my library having a free audiobook rental program I can usually find something good to get me through a couple of days.
Last week, I found Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake, and though it is not strictly a fae related series, it definitely had some elements that made me think of the Iron Fey. Specifically that the three main characters are all destined to be Queen, all possess supernatural abilities, and all have black hair and black eyes. (Sound like anyone we know?) So, due to some self-indulgence, and the enthusiastic encouragement of @ironfaerie, who also read the book, I wrote a tiny crossover piece between Three Dark Crowns and The Iron Fey (as seen above).
For a basic summary of TDC, among the triplets born, there is a Naturalist, a Poisoner, and an Elemental. The Naturalist has the ability to charm/control animals, and is able to cause trees, flowers, and other natural entities to grow and bloom before their time, and keep them fresh and healthy way past the time they should have died. Naturalists are also the only of the three that have a familiar animal (in this case a familiar is an animal that is specially bonded to the Naturalist and chose to follow them rather than being charmed or trained to do so.) The Poisoner is able to ingest any and all lethal substances like it is nothing at all, from crushed belladonna to scorpion venom. They wear live venomous snakes and insects as fashion statements. The Elemental is exactly what it sounds like. Think Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The three of them are raised together until age six, when they are then separated to go train in their predetermined gift until the age of 16, when they will begin the Ascension Year and work their hardest to kill their other two sisters to become the one true Queen.
If you guys are interested in learning more about the basis for this, I’d highly recommend reading Three Dark Crowns and seeing how you like it. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the concept of it is really interesting. I don’t have a link to the full book available but you can read the first three chapters, which introduce the three main characters individually, right here.
So, for the sake of this crossover, Mab is the last of a set of triplet Queens, having killed her two other sisters to become Queen, but after being crowned she escaped into Faery to escape the fate of having to give birth to the next set of triplets. She is an Elemental who favored water, and used it to build her kingdom of ice, and thought everything would be fine forever after. Until it wasn’t.
Anyway, that’s basically what’s going on here. It’s probably not going to become a regular thing on this blog, so don’t worry if you thought I was abandoning Iron Fey for a new series! But after reading Three Dark Crowns, ironfaerie and I both agreed there were just way too many ways the two clicked together to pass up the chance for some crossover shenanigans.
Final Note: The rhyme at the beginning is strictly the property of Kendare Blake. I merely borrowed it for dramatic effect.

I grew up on the Island of Hawaii, to be exact I grew up on the Island of Oahu, I’ve lived in Hawaii for 13 years then moved to Las Vegas recently ( a year ago ). And I told myself I will get married in Hawaii or have my honeymoon there because no matter how far I am from home I’ll always find my way back 💖
I know the beach house is in maui but tbh there is not a lot of in my opinion nice beach houses so bear with me please.
Beach House
Warning- Fluff and a making out like teenagers lmao. Being a wanderlust & Visuals.
*I decided to cut out the lap dance for the next chapter (; *
A day early AYO!
Word Count- 2,620
“Aloha we are now landing in Daniel K. Inouye International Airport the current time is 12:47 PM, it is 84 degrees fahrenheit with about 9 miles per hour winds. It is another sunny day on the beautiful Island of Oahu. Enjoy your honeymoon Mr and Mrs Raeken.” The pilot on the private jet announced I squealed looking out the window to see the beautiful stretch of the beaches as the waves met the shore
“It’s beautiful.” I gasped looking out the jet window Theo laced his fingers with mine brining my hand up to his lips kiss the back of my hand as we prepared for landing.
Once the plane landed I waited for the jet door to open revealing sunny blue skies “Aloha, welcome to Honolulu.” a lady greeted as she held something with flowers in her hands. She walked up to Theo and I and placed them around our necks they were called ‘Lei’s’ and placed a beautiful pink flower behind my left ear “Remember to place the flower on your left because it signifies that you’re married.” I nodded as a rental car pulled up as Theo led me to the car.
We pulled up to a beautiful beach house “Theo it’s gorgeous!” I opened the car door getting out to wait by the front door “Theo! Hurry!” I urged as I placed my hand on the doorknob pulling it down “(Y/N) you pack too many clothes and only use a third of them.” Theo complained as he got it the luggage out of the car I rushed over to him to take the car keys and the house keys I flew the door opened and gasped “Theo! Hurry in hurry!” It was opened to the back with the view of the ocean and a huge pool. Theo walked in grunting as he walked in dragging the suit cases I turned on my heels and gave Theo a hug “Thank you.” I mumbled as Theo wrapped his arms around my waist “Of course princess, anything for you.” I pulled back to place a kiss on his cheek “Hurry! I wanna go get lunch!” I squealed heading up the stairs “Princess you’re forgetting something.” I stopped mid-way up the stairs as Theo looked at the suit cases then at me “Awe, you’re strong you got this hubby.” I said with sarcasm as I continued my way upstairs.
Lifeas(Y/N)
Lifeas(Y/N)- Honeymoon vibez 🍯🌙
We arrived at a place called ‘Pā’ina Cafe’ cute and small famous for their poke and I love sushi so I already know I’m gonna LOVE this place. “Hi welcome to Pā’ina Cafe.” the worker said behind the counter “Hi can I get a two large spicy ahi bowls and two waters.” the worker nodded “It’ll be $19.95″ Theo placed a twenty and placed the coins in the tip bottle along with two dollars. Once we got our order we decided to eat outside since it was so sunny out.
“I don’t understand your love for sushi.” Theo mumbled with a mouthful of food causing me to giggle “Me? Look at you! Manner’s Theodore chew with your mouth closed.” I joked as Theo threw me a playful glare I kicked his calf playfully Theo grabbed some of the napkins towards me as I giggled at his actions “Are you ready for desert? We can go back to the beach house and swim.” I nodded finishing what ever I had left in the bowl.
We headed into Waikiki and stopped over at a desert place called Shimazu Shave Ice, and let me tell you the shave ice was HUGE for a large and quite affordable we waited in line as I looked up at the endless flavors for the shave ice. Theo glanced at her and smirked as her nose scrunched reading the flavors he leaned down to place a kiss on her cheek causing (Y/N) to lose her train of thought “Huh?” I asked confusingly “Get whatever flavor you want I’ll share it with you.” I smiled leaning up to kiss Theo’s cheek “Next, hi may I take your order.” a lady in her mid fifties said behind the counter “Hi can we get a large vanilla, blue cotton candy and french vanilla with condense milk?” The women nodded behind the counter “That’ll be $5.00″ I handed her a twenty “Keep the change.” I smiled as she gave Theo and I a warm smile “Are you two on your honeymoon?” she asked as I looked down at my left hand “Yeah we are.” Theo answered placing a kiss on the crown of my head “Awe how sweet, and it’s great that you chose Hawaii great weather all year long.” I smiled “Yeah it’s been a dream and on my bucket list to come to Hawaii.” she smiled “I hope you enjoy your stay on this beautiful Island! Here’s your shave ice.” Theo took it from her thanking her as she went outside to eat the shave ice.
I laid on the beach chair waiting for Theo to come down and rub some sunscreen on my back “Okay where’s the sun screen.” I looked up to see Theo with blue swim trunks with seahorses cauisng me to laugh “Love the trunks.” I said sarcastically Theo laughed dryly “I’ll leave you to burn in the sun.” I handed him the sunscreen as he began to massage it into my back.
TheoRaeken
TheoRaeken- Wifey 💍
I swam over to Theo wrapping my arms around his neck “Thank you.” I whispered causing Theo to show off his beautiful pearly white teeth “Of course, you deserve a honeymoon.” I smiled peppering kisses all over his face causing Theo to smile he lifted me up into the air spinning me around causing me to giggle “Theo!” I squealed as he placed me back into the water kissing me sweetly. My heart fluttered, this is the first time this happened first time. Usually when Theo kisses me I don’t feel anything but now... now it felt like fireworks. As cliche as it sounds it’s true I pulled back my eyes fluttered open to meet Theo’s beautiful blue eyes I smirked to myself pushing him down into the water yep I ruined the moment. “(Y/N)!” Theo screamed as he wrapped his arm around my waist pulling me into the water I swam up to the surface not long after Theo stood behind me wrapping his arms around my waist resting his chin on my shoulder “Let’s go to the edge.” he whispered I pulled away to look at him “Theo you know I’m short right?” I turned around to wrap my arms loosely around his neck “Well, I’ll carry you there.” Theo answered lifting me over his shoulder “Theo!” I squealed, once we were near the edge Theo placed me down gently into the water his arms tightened around my waist.
Silence filled the air, a good silence. The sound of the waves were calming standing here with Theo, my best friend... I married my best friend and here we are on our honeymoon. I never imagined myself here with Theo, the thought never crossed my mind but we’d be married for a year unless we develop feelings for each other. But one thing that I’ve been thinking about is, having kids. Being the only one out of the girls to not have children is kinda sad to me because honestly I treat them as if they’re my own... should I tell Theo? Should I use the gift Lydia gave me?
Lydia walked in with a Victoria’s Secret bags “I come bearing gifts!” she squealed dropping the bags down on my bed “Why?” I questioned looking at her with a confused expression “Duh for your honeymoon.” she pulled out a few kimonos that were satin then a few babydoll dresses “Lydia how much did you spend.” I grabbed one of the babydoll dresses that were a dark iron color a slit ran up the side and the coverage for the chest was lace it was quite beautiful “Uh about $500.” she shrugged taking out the rest of the items from the bag I gasped “Lydia Martin Stilinski! Why!” I questioned placing the dress onto the bed Lydia shrugged “Because I want a godson or goddaughter.. use any of these trust me it works.” my mouth gaped open “You want me to conceive a child in one of these things? Oh my don’t tell me that’s how you ended up pregnant with Allison.” Lydia began to chuckle “Yes that’s exactly how, now pack all of these beauties into that suitcase of yours.
“Hey, what are you thinking about?” Theo questioned I sighed turning around to sit on the ledge I fiddled with my ring “Do you think I’ll be a good mom?” one fear that I hate to come true is to be like my mother. She was never in my life and I wouldn’t want to miss any moment in my children’s life. “(Y/N) baby... you’d be a great mother. I know you’re greatest fear is you’ll become your mother but you won’t I’ve seen the way you look at Caleb and Cole. I know it may have crossed your mind to have kids, I would be lying if I said it never crossed my mind.” did he just say what I think he said? “Theo.” I whispered “(Y/N) I think.. I think we should give this marriage a shot. If you want to.” Theo scratched the back of his nape looking down shyly. I cupped his cheeks so that he was looking at me I pulled him down slightly to kissing him sweetly “I’d love too.”
Theo’s Outfit & Reader’s Outfit
“Theo are you sure you know where you’re going?” I questioned looking up from my phone every so often looking at the surroundings “Yes, we’ll be there in about five minutes.” I chuckled remembering when he said that the last time “Last time you told me we’re five to our destination we were an hour in traffic on our way to disneyland.” Theo laughed dryly “That was one time and we took the long way.” which was true he told me we’ll be there in five minutes more like fifty five minutes. “We’re here.” Theo announced getting out of the car to come to my side of the car “Told yah.” Theo said proudly as he helped me out of the car leading up to the dirt path.
These food truck had the BEST garlic shrimp “This is sooo good.” I said with a mouthful causing Theo to chuckle he pulled out his phone and began taking pictures “Theo!” I reached forward to grab his phone Theo quickly placed it back in his pocket he grabbed my hand and kissed the back of it “Hush princess.” Theo smirked.
Our next stop was Dole Plantation and we’d head back to the beach house in time for dinner. The thing about Dole Plantation was there’s a maze and one thing I hate are mazes, but knowing Theo he’s competitive and would want to race to see who finishes first. We both stood outside the maze a lump began to form in my throat causing me to swallow hard “Ready?” Theo questioned with a smirk, nope not ready not even closer “Loser buys the ice cream.” Theo headed to the left as I stood there hesitant as I slowly made my way to the right.
“Stay calm and just find your way out” I reminded myself each turn I made was either a dead end or lead to a dead end “Theo?” I screamed as I felt my head begin to spin “Theo! I wanna leave you win! I just wanted ice cream!” my vision began to blur as I looked around to see no one near me “Theo!” I screamed as I felt fresh salty tears slip down my cheeks I began to walk backwards till I hit something hard thinking it was the bushes till it went “Boo.” and last time I checked bushes can’t talk. I screamed turning around ready to hit whatever it was I backed into to till the thing I bumped into was Theo “You! I want to leave I just wanted ice cream.” I mumbled placing my sunglasses on my nose to hide the fact that I had been crying “Princess I’m-” I turned to look at Theo “No I just wanted ice cream but now I want to leave.” Theo nodded his gaze fixed towards the ground leading us out.
*Third person P.O.V*
The drive back was silent music played softly in the background shared glances here and there but no one spoke. Eventually (Y/N) fell asleep thirty minutes into the car ride Theo glanced at her every so often to make sure she was okay. Once he reached the beach house he went out to unlock the door and went back to the car to carry (Y/N) out. Once he placed her on their shared bed he removed her shoes and placed the covers over her body, Theo left he placed a kiss on her forehead he had got up to leave till (Y/N) grabbed his wrist “Stay, just sleep with me.” she mumbled snuggling into the pillow as Theo kicked off his shoes “Don’t sleep for too long, I wanted to take you out to dinner.” Theo mumbled snuggling closer to (Y/N). Her eyes fluttered open slightly to meet Theo’s eyes “You don’t need to take me out to dinner.” she snuggled closer to him “I’m sorry I overreacted.” Theo glanced down at (Y/N) and smiled “Princess I should be the one saying sorry, but I wanted to take you out to dinner.” he whined causing (Y/N) to shake her head “No, I just want to have dinner in please?” Theo gave her a small nod his eyes fluttering shut as they both fell asleep in each other’s arms.
(Y/N) sat on the couch changing the channels as Theo was busy cooking dinner, she felt the couch dip as Theo let out a sigh “Dinner is in the oven.” (Y/N) smirked to herself as she moved to straddle Theo lap as his hands flew to her waist “Wanna make out like horny teenager?” her arms rested loosely around his neck as she played with the his short brown locks “Well aren’t you straight forward?” (Y/N) rolled her eyes playfully as she leaned in closer her lips ghosting over his “So is that a yes or a no?” Theo closed the small gap between them as their lips moved in sync (Y/N) began to move her hips against his at a slow pace. Theo licked the bottom of her lips a few times (Y/N) decided to bite his bottom lip pulling back a little as Theo changed their positions so that (Y/N) under him “Bad kitten.” Theo’s voice was raspy as (Y/N) tried to catch her breath Theo kissed her harshly as he licked the bottom of her lip a few times causing (Y/N) to part them slightly as their tongues fought for dominance which Theo won. Just then the timer went off causing Theo to pull away breathlessly “Dinner time.”
Theo and (Y/N) sat on the lounge chair as they watched the sunset “Thank you for this honeymoon Theo.” she leaned forward to place a kiss on his cheek “No problem princess anything for you.” Theo placed both their plates of lasagna on the ground as (Y/N) moved to lay against Theo’s body her back pressed against his chest. Theo placed a kiss on her exposed shoulder as ocean breeze filled the air as they watched the sun go down.
Best honeymoon ever.

Day 10: When in Rome, Go on Walking Tours and Kill the Cockroaches We checked into our hotels and had a couple hours of much needed down time before heading off down the streets so Alexandra could show us how to use the metro passes we were all given. It was a bit of a hike to the metro station, but not overwhelmingly so. The best part of the entire situation was when our train got there, only a handful of people managed to get on before the doors immediately closed again and Alexandra, freaking out, started yelling "Spagna!!" at them so they would know the stop to get off at. Thankfully, the doors opened back up again, but the entire group had a laugh about the entire thing for most of the ride down to the city center of Rome. From here, we met up with our tour guide for the optional Beauty of Rome walking tour! Rome is made up of 3 million people and it's the 3rd most visited city in Europe and the 10th most visited in the world. The first stop on our tour was the Spanish Steps. It's the most expensive real estate in Rome and most of the apartments are used as rentals for tourists. The Spanish Steps themselves were paid for by the French and built by the Italians, but they get their name was the Spanish Square below it, named from the embassy at the side of the square. Rome is the biggest city in Italy and has about 7 million tourists every year. Where as the Vatican is the smallest country in the world (though not really because there's a one-block area of Rome that's actually an independent country for the Knighthood of Malta, which has their own government and elected leader who rules for life--gates pictured above). The Fountain beneath the Spanish Steps was built in the 1600's and looks like a sinking boat because it's filled by an ancient Roman aqueduct. The fountain was paid for by a Pope (Fun fact: Popes used to wear crowns like royalty and the last Pope's crown is actually housed in Washington, D.C.!) and it's filled with safe drinking water, so you can fill up a water bottle here--I didn't, but a couple girls on the trip did--but if you go in the fountain, intentionally or unintentionally, there's a 500 euro fine. OUCH. Another fun fact we learned about the city was that the Tiber River used to flood all the time, but in 1870 the city built walls to protect the city from the floods. Also, did you know that Basilicas are just churches that house relics? I didn't know that until this tour--which was interesting that none of our guides before had mentioned it. Next, we walked over to the Trevi Fountain: basically the walk-in-the-footsteps tour of the Lizzie McGuire Movie. The fountain itself took 40 years to build. And with how beautiful and magnificent it is, I can totally understand (pictured above). The Pope who originally requisitioned it died before its completion. The same thing happened to the next Pope who took over the project. It wasn't until the third Pope that it was actually finished--so it's attributed to all three. Behind the fountain, it's connected to a pretty large and extravagant building. Originally, this was a private residence (DIBS), but now it's a museum. The four women at the top of the fountain are meant to represent the four seasons, each holding a different object: horn of plenty, grain, wine, and flowers. The horses at the bottom show one placid and one wild, which were meant to represent the two sides of water--one tame and one always trying to break free. Each year the Trevi Fountain takes in about 500,000 euros (LIKE WHAAAAA). It used to go to charity, but there's no longer a sign saying where the money goes. Before we moved on, Alexandra treated us all to gelato! I tried cherry and an orange chocolate, both of which were super yummy. Oh, and the bathroom here was the first toilets we've encountered so far on our trip that didn't have toilet seats. Which is a whole other experience (I need to work on my squats more!). Next stop on our tour was the Pantheon. This was a building that was literally named for it's use: "For All Gods." It was a pagan temple built 1,800 years ago and was dedicated to all Roman/Greek gods, until 609 AD when it changed from a pagan temple to a Catholic Church. The building is a round temple was a dome that used to be covered in bronze so it shone and it's the widest dome in Rome AND it had a huge window in the center of the dome that's never covered. Which means that it rains directly into the building and the water is collected into the drains in the floor (I wish we had seen this! But it's been so sunny on our trip). The first King of Italy is buried here and so is Raphael. Just in front of the temple is an obelisk. There are 13 of these obelisks around Rome and they're mostly all from Egypt (with one fake one at Piazza Navona). The one in front of the Pantheon was originally in Egypt guarding the temple of Iris. Next, we walked over to Piazza Navona for our last stop, a large piazza that's shaped like an oval with one flat side. Here there are three fountains, one smaller temple to Poseidon, another that I didn't catch, and the biggest one in the center which houses the physical representations of the major rivers of the continents: The Four Rivers Fountain. These rivers are the Nile, the River of Plight, the Danube, and the Ganges River. Our tour ended here and they (our tour director and tour guide) gave us quick instructions to get back to the metro (the last of which left at 11:30). It was just after 9, so the three of us decided to walk toward the direction they told us until we found a pasta place we wanted to eat at. Not far away from the square, we found a cute place with checkered table clothes that had cheaper prices than in the square. We sat down here and Carolina ordered a tuna sandwich, while Natasha and I got the most amazing Spinach and Ricotta Cannelonis (I got mine as a special with a glass of Bellini--much more citrusy than the bottle we had in Verona--and bruschetta). It was delicious! And when I said thank you to the waiter in Italian, he looked really impressed and asked if I knew Italian and flirted with me a bit which was amusing as all hell considering that I looked ROUGH that evening. After dinner, we got lost a bit and than hoofed it to the metro station (which was a bit unnecessary given the time, but we made it on time and didn't have to worry about another Verona after-hours situation). We got off at Cornelia, the stop for our hotel, and walked the couple of blocks to the Clubhouse Hotel where we were staying. I DO NOT. I repeat, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL. Within two minutes of being back in our room, I saw a mother effin' cockroach. That little shit ran from underneath my bed to over near the curtains and hide there. So, naturally, I calmly said, "Uh, guys. I just saw a cockroach." There may have been also a curse word in there somewhere, but you get the deal. So, of course, we all freak out and Natasha and I go down to the front desk to talk to reception (because our flipping phone didn't work) and we left Carolina to guard the roach and make sure it didn't move. The guy at the desk doesn't really believe us at first, and just keeps apologizing, and then he didn't know what a cockroach was, so I had to turn on my data (because the Wifi in this place is also THE PITS) and pull up a picture of the disgusting creature. He apologizes again and says he can't move us to a different room because there aren't any more available. He says he can move us in the morning, but not that night. So, naturally, we insist that he makes someone go up to our room and deal with the piece of shit bug before we go to sleep. He says there isn't anyone there (because it's midnight by then and we couldn't get in contact with Alexandra to tell her about everything because of the shitty wifi), but he said he would come look at the situation. I'm pretty sure he didn't believe us, because when he got up there and the thing ran out at him, he actually jumped back before stomping on it. He apologized and said he'd go re-check on the room situation (*internally* "Yeah you freaking better check on that!"). It took about another 20 minutes or so, then he finally called our room and told us that he didn't have any other triples, but that he could give us a single and a double. We said okay and packed up all our stuff in double time because another one of the roach beasts ran out from the dresser and under our bed while we were talking to him. Carolina took one room and Natasha and I took the other. Naturally, even though we were exhausted and I still had to shower, we did a thorough cockroach check under everything with the lights on our phones. Thankfully, no roaches. Annoyingly, there were (and still are a day later) ants in our bathroom and the bottom of the tub is super gross, so we're been showering with flip-flops on (ALWAYS PACK FLIP-FLOPS FOR THIS REASON). But it was better than staying in the roach war zone for even a single night. I showered--carefully as to not step on any of the weird black flecks on the bottom of the tub if I stepped weird on my flip-flops--mopped up all the water with hand towels (the shower has this rotating wall thing that only goes halfway along the tub--PS: this was the first hotel we've been in that actually had a tub! The rest were all small standing showers), and then got ready for bed. By the time I laid down, I fell asleep so fast that I didn't even bother braiding my hair like I normally do. It was about 1:30am by the time I got to sleep. Once again, so much for an early night!

got me looking so crazy right now + lilicole
TAGGING: Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse @ole-cole
LOCATION: Coachella grounds, rental house, Indio, CA.
TIMEFRAME: April 14th, 2017.
NOTES: In which Lili needs a cold shower, Cole is an amazing boyfriend, and first times aren’t meant to happen seven fruity drinks in too deep.
Lili was obviously having a /great/ time at Coachella. Surrounded by her boyfriend, her best friends, and live music - she was in Heaven. It was like the modern day version of Woodstock and call her cliche, but she had gotten into the full swing of things. There was a flower crown wrapped around her blonde tresses and her feet were deliciously aching from dancing to the songs that played out from every side of the desert. Her adrenaline was high and her happiness was practically bubbling out of her. The drinks she kept downing didn't hurt her either. At first they had been social anxiety devices to help her feel more comfortable being with all these strangers, but then Lili had just gotten addicted the fruity and sugary confections being passed around in red cups. The alcohol loosened her inhibitions and everything just looked /better/ the more she drank. She laughed harder, she felt freer, and the warm and misty haze around the beautiful people she loved so much made her want to drape herself all over them and show them just /how/ much she loved them. Cole was no exception. He was getting it the most, Lili unable to keep her hands off her boyfriend. There had been this itch that she had been wanting to scratch ever since first kissing him in her bedroom and Cole's /face/ in general didn't do much to discourage it. He was gorgeous, there was no getting around that. That one dark curl that always sprang free and rested against his forehead, the intense looks he'd sometimes shoot at her ("it's like you're an ocean and he's desperate to drown"), and the wide smile that just seemed to light up his whole being whenever they spent time together. Cole actively /wanted/ Lili and nothing made her feel better about herself. Or more desirable. "Babe," she squealed lightly as her arms wrapped around his waist and she pressed a kiss to his neck. She was interrupting a conversation he was having but too drunk to care, this impoliteness slid away like hot butter in a pan. "I miss you. Come dance with me!"
Cole: He could see that she was becoming more and more inebriated as time went on something he was keeping somewhat of an eye on as the night went on, she was as far as he was aware a little less used to this kind of scene than he was, and a bit less versed with getting quite so intoxicated, one problem they were facing as a couple was the fact for all intents and purposes they were both extremely handsy when drunk, something he was wondering if which was truly getting to the people around them. Needless to say anyone close by who didn't know or were unsure as to what their relationship status was, was now quite aware, or under the impression they were two friends about to very much pass that line will drunk. He was by far not as effected by the alcohol as she was right now, and he was in some way starting to get a little worried about how freely she was continuing to down the drinks, while defintely not leaving any time to somewhat sober between even with the continual fresh air, and snaking very much like she always did helping to line her stomach but no where near enough for it to slow the effects of the booze. He sighed against he on instinct before giving their friends an apologetic look as she dragged him away to dance, his arms holding her waist tightly if anything to make sure she didn't stubble over in her state, "You thought I was a handsy drunk " He said lips brushing against her ear as he kept cheek pressed against her jaw line as they moved to the music. He was defintely at the point in his tipsiness where he was not so much caring how affectionate he was being in front of so many people but much more in control than the blonde pressed against him right now. "How much have you had huh." He chuckled his hands moving to her rear without really contemplating it.
Lili smiled in satisfaction as Cole didn't protest to being pulled to the dance floor..or well, patch of spare field that everyone around them was gyrating on. Not that he would have had any say in the matter, but it helped that Lili didn't have to drag him kicking and screaming. Picking up his hand and holding it above their hands as they found a less crowded part to sidle up to each other, Lili closed the distance in between their bodies and settled her hands on his hips as she moved her hips in time to the beat. Lili would swear up and down that she was a horrible dancer but she was less self-conscious while under the influence, therefore more free in her movements and much better than she thought she was. Giggling at the ticklish sensation of his mouth near her ear and also at the feeling of his hands moving down her body and to her butt, lightly cupping it, Lili bit her lip and pressed herself closer to him. She needed him just that much closer. "You /are/ a handsy drunk," she corrected him, arching a brow and looking down at his hands as if to say 'see?' Not that she was complaining. The arm that was snaked around his waist moved up to wrap around his neck and Lili pressed her lips against his, his breath ghosting over her and Lili feeling like she could get more drunk off of it. She hadn't seen Cole down as many drinks as her but then again, this sort of scenery wasn't really new for Cole. Between college parties and other festivals he'd probably attended, he was well versed in how to handle them and Lili..well, Lili was a bit naive. She just wanted to experience /everything/. She couldn't find it in herself to pass down any drinks, no matter if her brain kept warning her 'Chill the fuck out! Drink some water! Eat some pizza!' "I've only had a little," Lili argued innocently in answer to his question and gave Cole a beatific smile. She could've resembled an angel right now with her sweet grin, flushed cheeks, and flower crown tilted haphazardly to the side..if there hadn't been such a mischevious glint in her eye. Kissing him again and then moving her lips up to his ear in a move that mirrored his previous action, Lili whispered, "Do you want to find a quieter place?"
Cole: He let his lips trail along her next grinning against the skin there. "Mhmm I can't change that." He said holding her as they moved to the music. He knew he was being a lot more open to the public displays of affection than he would usually be without the booze influencing him. Soon as her lips brushed his he was lost in the moment unable to catch his breath as he held her as close as possible. Any thought of people watching gone from his mind and all care of it lost. "Oh i can tell you have." He laughed a little shaking his head "but a little might not be the right description." He swallowed at her words holding her close to him lips brushing along her jaw. "What did you have in mind?" His one hand moving from her butt resting on her lower back. He could feel the way the alcohol was effecting him but it wasn't enough for him to not realise what she seemed to be suggesting. His somewhat more sober state telling him that if things got too heated it would have to be him who brought a stop to it seeing as he knew for sure this was not how she would want them to take that next leap.
Lili pulled back as Cole questioned where they would go and what they would do and Lili tugged teasingly at his belt loops. "Oh, I'm sure we could think of something to do," her tone was light and airy but her eyes were dark and heated, Lili licking her lips at the thought of having Cole all to herself for a few hours. She glanced around to see that all of their friends weren't paying a speck of attention to them so they could get away with going off and having their own little celebration. "C'mon," her fingers laced through his and she began to walk backwards, pulling him towards her. Turning around and keeping his arm over her shoulder, Lili led them through the throng of people and they walked in comfortable silence until they had reached the car they all came in. She opened the passenger door, knowing she wasn't nearly in the right frame of mind to drive. "Take me home, Jeeves," she told him cheerfully and of course by home, she meant the place they had rented for the weekend to sleep and refresh from Coachella in.
Cole: He followed her how could he not, when she was acting like she was, if anything he needed to get her back to the room and make her drink a shit ton of water, but he wasn't going to say not to a little more pg fun, before anything potentially went too far. He followed her arm wrapping around her should as they walked fingers laced with hers as they made their way out of the place towards lines and lines of cars, noticing her actualyl try to get into the car the gang had come down in today her close the door straight after she opened it shaking his head, "I think we should maybe go for a taxi, babe, I am not going to get us into a drunk driving accident and leave the others without a way home at the same time." He wapped his arm around her waist leading her towards the taxi area, letting the driver know the hotel name before helping Lili into the back seat with him, assuring the driver she wasn't far enough gone for him to worry about his furnishings. He held against him as they were driven back to their place for the weekend.
Lili was pulled gently back and she gave a confused look to Cole. It didn't even register in her mind that Cole wasn't exactly sober enough to drive home either and now that she looked closer..was that even their car? Who knew. Lili giggled as he pulled her closer to him and they headed towards the string of taxis all lined up and ready to escort the drunk festival goers home. At least Coachella had plenty of resources to prevent tragic accidents. Slipping into the back seat, Lili pressed her head against the car seat and looked over at Cole, the same blissful smile on her face as she thought about how lucky she was to be going home with him. She had seen plenty of women check him out during the day - he was Coachella man bait, in his shirt and his jeans and his sunglasses and even in the cigarette dangling off his lips. It was a horrible habit and she took every chance she had to teasingly lecture him about it but even that further sold his devilish no cares, rebel without a cause aesthetic he had going on. "Mm, you're so dreamy," she murmured to him, grinning as she leaned up to kiss him and held his cheek in place. "I'm hot. Are you hot in here?" Lili felt like her skin was boiling and she held her blonde hair up off her neck, trying to wrap it back up with her red head band and failing. She had lost her flower crown somewhere in the grass.
Cole: He could see how confused she seemed and it was becoming more and more apparent how not with it she was, he was going to have to tuck her into sleep with water by her side the bed maybe force her to eat some crackers or something to help soak it all up as soon as they got back to their room. He was more than thankful getting a taxi was quick and easy because he was worried that she would have headed back and potentially drunk more if they couldn't get out of here quickly. He turned to her as they started to drive noticing the look on her face having to bit back a smile at the way she was taking him in. He raised a brow when she voiced the thoughts that seemed to be etched all over her face as she looked at him, his cheeks turning a little read at the choice of phrasing, he wouldn't have ever placed that kind of adjective to himself but hearing it from her lips no matter how low her inhibitions were made him smile. He smiled into the kiss knowing the taxi driver was probably used to this kind of behaviour but mentally making sure to not let it go too past chaste. "It's warm but that might be the booze and desert." He chuckled letting his hand brush her cheek. "Come here" he laughed taking the scarf from her, one advantage of having had long hair was knowledge of how to handle it, he wrapped her hair into a little bun for her and secured it with the scarf pecking a kiss to her forehead. Soon as the car came to a stop her paid the driver and helped Lili out of the car towards their room, unlocking it and letting her in.
Lili pursed her lips as she continued to struggle in the car but then Cole's hands were gently taking over for her. She stopped wriggling around, and sat patiently as his fingers swept through her blonde locks and pulled the disheveled mess into a pile on top of her head. It didn't make the flush spreading over her body cool down but she could feel a breeze run across the back of her neck. And it was nice to not constantly be pushing her hair away from her face. Closing her eyes and smiling as Cole pecked her forehead, Lili leaned her body into his and kept her eyes closed as they continued to drive. She felt like she could sink through the seats and pass out, the alcohol making everything feel sluggish for her. But when they stopped, her eyes snapped open and she was on high alert again. They were back at their place, completely alone, and that urge to run her hands all over Cole was coming over her again. She climbed out of the car after him and leaned against the door as she unlocked it, licking her lips and keeping her gaze on him until they walked in. Her hands flicked the light on and then Lili was pulling Cole towards her, twining her arms around his neck and giving him a more passionate kiss than she had allowed herself to so far. "I want you so bad," she breathed out and finally pulled back to allow herself to catch her breath. Her lips were bee stung from the kissing and her cheeks were flushed, Lili reaching up to pull her shirt off and then sitting on the bed, staring up at Cole. "Come join me," she patted the space next to her. "I won't bite. Unless you want me to."
Cole: As they made their way into the room he took the cigarette packet and sunglasses out of his shirt pocket dropping them on the table in the entrance to their room, as he followed her into the room, but before he had time to think she was all over him and he had no time to let his brain kick in her was pawing at her too on instinct holding her against his body hands groping her as he puller her a little close to his height, groaning into her mouth and he got lost in the taste of her. Her words hit him hard, at first making him want lift her up and take her on the nearest surface, but then realisation hitting him like a cold shower as she pulled away reminding him how wasted she was, and how little she was actually thinking right now, driven completely by instinct and her hormones and not in a good way. Unlike when they were in Mexico when both of them were sober but getting drunk of each other, something that had very nearly lead down the rabbit hole twice in one night, now she was being effect by more than just the heat between them. He let out a shakey breath making his way over to her. He walked into the kitchen grabbing a bottle of water of the counter handing it to her as he made to sit on the bed, "Lets try drinking some of this first before we do anything else." He ran his thumb over his lips as he took her in his slightly loosened mind wanting nothing more than to take her up on what she was offering but the logical and more gentlemanly side winning over, though not enough for him to stop himself from admiring his girlfriends body just a bit.
Lili didn't protest as Cole moved to go get a bottle of water, and even untwisted the cap to take it off and take a swig of it. Maybe if she did what /he/ wanted, he'd be more inclined to do what /she/ wanted. This wasn't a bargain and Lili was in no head space to barter, but all she could focus on was Cole and how he kept dragging his finger over his lips. The lips she wanted to keep kissing. She watched as his eyes raked over her chest, only her bra on and this further fueled her ego. She put the water down and dragged her fingers through her unkempt hair, grinning in a predatory fashion at her boyfriend. Her signature move, Lili moved so that she was straddling Cole and tipped his chin towards him. "Okay, I drank water," she whispered down to him and pushed her hips teasingly towards his. Lili didn't know what came over her when it came to Cole; she wasn't the type of girl to be flirtatious but when it came to Cole, it came so naturally and her sensuality shone through every movement she made. "Let's do the something else now." Her fingers went down to unzip his jeans and Lili sucked in a breath, unable to help the shudder of both desire and nerves that came over her.
Cole: His brain some what short circuited as she climbed into his lap his hands going her waist without a thought, his breath catching as she pushed into him, he may be in the conscious enough mind to stop things going too far but he wasn't able to control his bodies reaction her and he knew that his growing buldge wasn't going to help in stopping her movements in the slightest, it would be a reason for her to keep it up more than anything. Seeing this side of her though not something he could find himself able to fully enjoy given her state made more intrigued for when he did allow things to go there. He was about to speak when her nimble finger undid his zipper and he took a sharp inhale, as he took her hands in his. "Lili" He breathed out looking at her searching her eyes to try and make her see how serious he was. "Not like this, not when you're drunk." He kept her small hands cupped in his for a moment taking a slow inhale of breath. "Not like this. You know all this means a lot to you, you don't want it to happen like this with us." He let go of her hands easily lifting her off of him and placing her to his side as he stood up jeans hanging loosely off his hips in their undone state, he moved to try and help her into bed instead.
Lili felt herself get lifted off and placed next to Cole's side in one swift movement. Utterly confused and a little humiliated by this rejection, Lili reached for her shirt and held it up against her chest. She knew that when she woke up in the morning, she'd be thankful for this. She knew that Cole was doing the /right/ thing and being a /good/ boyfriend. If he allowed this to go on any further, Lili would've realized she didn't know the kind of man he was and Lili never wanted Cole to be anyone but the sweet, thoughtful and always considerate of her feelings man she was quickly falling head over heels for. But right now, flushed and desperate to touch him, and feeling small as she realized that she wasn't going to get her way, Lili couldn't feel anything but disorientation from how fast things had been going to the screeching halt they now were. "Maybe I do," she told him stubbornly but Cole was smart enough to know that Lili really didn't. Eyeing his jeans hanging low on his hips, Lili tried to pull her features into her best come hither expression and gave it one last shot. "Don't you want me to touch you," she asked him lowly, her hands tugging his jeans down so that they were nearly about to fall at the waist. Her hand smoothed over his hip bone and as delicately as she could, Lili palmed him before pulling back and biting her lip. "Don't you want to touch /me/?"
Cole: He watched her expression change and her instant need to cover herself feeling both releaved and bad at the reaction to him stopping her, she was embarrassed and he hated being the reason why even if it was the right thing to do in the moment. His eyes shut and she suggested she still wanted it to go there, he shook his head, he was sobering up more and more by the moment. "I.."He took in a sharp breath at her hand cupping him, a slow moan leaving his lips as he knew he hardened under her touch. He was doing everything in his power not to take her in every way she was trying to convince him she wanted. "More than anything Lili more than anything but not like this." He took her in sat there trying to be seductive and in her drunken state still managing to do exactly that. He ran his hand through his hair taking a step back out of her reach. "Not like this Lili"
Lili and three strikes, and Lili was out. She slumped backwards. What was she supposed to do, /attack/ him and force him to have sex with her? No. Cole didn't want to and the more he turned her down, the less Lili wanted to either. Her expression grew downtrodden as he gently pushed her hands away. She could see that his /body/ was raring to go, but not his mind and that was the most important part. Tucking her lip in her mouth and nibbling down on it, Lili either wanted a time machine to spin back the hours when she had gleefully accepted the drinks handed to her and/or to melt through the floor and disappear from this embarrassing moment that was currently taking place. "Okay," she softly replied. "I'm sorry." She wasn't insecure enough to think that it was because of the way she looked, but she still couldn't help but self consciously pull her tank back over her head. It took a few tries, Lili continuing to get her arms stuck but she pushed on. It'd tack on to the humiliation if Cole literally had to help her get dressed. She stood up, swaying slightly and gripped the nearest end table to steady herself. Her whole head was still spinning and she felt heated. Cole was still hard in front of her and staring at that wasn't going to do anything to turn her off. "Can you get me some more water?" She asked, her eyes not meeting his. It was strange; she wanted him to hold her and reassure her that she wasn't as stupid as she felt right now but she also wanted him to just leave the room and let her soak in self-pity for a few minutes.
Cole: He couldn't take the way it seemed to defeat her he was thankful when she asked him to get some water for her because they way she looked even though he knew he had done the right thing was breaking him. She was apologising to him for what had happened when he felt like he should be the one apologising. He watched her struggle with her top the embarrassment she felt evident and knowing that he was the cause broke him slightly. He didn't want to help knowing it would hut her ego more than he already had. He simply nodded at her request and went to the kitchen to grab a water doing up his belt and jeans as he stood leaning on the counter for a moment trying to right himself mentally to go back into the room. Heading back in he sat down next to her handing her the water feeling it he touched he even a comforting way it wouldn't go well right now "lets get you to bed so you can sleep this off, we'll talk about it in the morning." He knelt down to help her out of her converse before helping her lay down and tucking the covers over her.
Lili As soon as Cole left the room, Lili couldn't help but let a few tears slide down her cheeks. She knew she was being silly and she knew that the alcohol was causing her to take this to heart more than she should. But her nose had started prickling as soon as she saw him exit the room and then she hadn't been able to escape the horrifying conclusion that she was crying simply because her boyfriend was actually a /decent man/. Any emotion that Lili felt ended ninety nine percent of the time in tears. Anger at being yelled at? Tears. Happiness at being surprised? Tears. Embarrassment of trying to give her boyfriend a very weak handjob and being told to basically take a cold shower? Tears. Wiping quickly at the corner of her eyes with her thumb, and then wiping discreetly at her nose, Lili managed to pull herself together as he came back in. She didn't want him to see her upset, or well, more upset than she had already shown him and she definitely didn't want him feeling guilty for doing the /right/ thing. Lili was just a very drunk hot mess at the moment. She took the bottle of water he offered her and took a swig, barely tasting the cool liquid and then placing it on the table. Unknown to her, she'd be reaching for it in the middle of the night after running towards the bathroom to relieve her already aching stomach. Watching as Cole began to tug off her shoes, Lili felt the pinpricks of tears start again (get a /grip/ Lili), and sniffled as she moved back into the bed. The sheets felt cool against her heated skin and she laid there on her side, staring at the wall and curling up. It wouldn't take her long to fall asleep, exhaustion sweeping over her, and she was out like a light before she could even muster up another apology to her boyfriend.

Scotland
I’ve always identified as being Greek - as a kid I went to Greek Orthodox Church Camp in Greece, I savour baklava and I eat copious amounts of lamb on Easter. However, when I meet people they always seem to be surprised that I'm Greek - could be the fair skin and freckles, which I inherit from my Scottish side. I had never been interested in my Scottish side, despite my extremely Scottish and common last name, Ramsay, until I was introduced to the show Outlander this year. For those of you who have watched it, it takes place in Scotland, and I finally had an interest in going. I’m not sure if it was because of the hottest read-headed Scot I’ve ever seen being on the show(Jamie Fraser), or if it was seeing that the history of Scotland was rich, and something I had overlooked all my life, but I decided to make the trek out there this July.
Scotland is a beautiful country. It reminded me quite a bit of Iceland and in certain parts, just not as cold when I was there. It does rain quite a bit, but going in July I only had 1 of my 9 days where there was any precipitation, so I don’t believe it’s as dark and gloomy as people expect it to be. Edinburgh and Glasgow, two of the main cities, are located closer to the south of the country. There are some fantastic beaches to hit south of these two cities, mostly on the west coast. Even travelling north, the west coast is more dense and has more to see than the east. Scotland is not a heavily populated country, and travelling north you’ll find many small little towns that pass in the blink of an eye, but the highlands are definitely worth checking out. That was actually my favourite part of the trip - the north has something amazing about it, and I’m very glad I rented a car to get up there and see it.
The one difficulty with this is that in Scotland, they drive on the opposite side of the road. It’s quite a shock to see cars coming at you on the wrong side of the freeway, so wherever you are, make sure you do a little bit of small driving before you get onto the big roads. I always use rentalcars.com to book my cars, and by doing it at least 1 week in advance you’ll save a ton of money. For 1 week my car rental was $350.00 by booking in advance, but at the counter it would have been over $1000.00 - you have been warned!
I tried to cover as much as I could during my 9 days, and if I were to go back a second time I would do a few things differently. I would stay longer up in the North, and check out some more of the Isles. I only got to Skye, which was absolutely stunning, but there are many more out there to explore.
Day 1 - I flew WestJet and arrived in Glasgow. WestJet has a night flight, so you get there in the morning, which means you avoid losing a whole day of travel as long as you can sleep on planes. The Glasgow airport is quite small, so it was easy to pick up my rental car and drive around a bit to get myself familiarized. From here, I made my way up to Dalwhinnie, a 2 hour drive out from the airport. There is not much to see in Glasgow itself, as it’s very industrial, but there are some nice parks and downtown areas. This is actually where my Scottish family is from - they were a poor, working family who didn’t seem to have much until they went over to Canada. On the way to Dalwhinnie, you’ll hit Perth, where you can stop for lunch and also see the Scone Palace. It’s a great little town that has some awesome Haggis and Ale, if you’re looking to stop for a nice Scottish lunch. From here, I carried on and ended at Balsporran Cottages in Dalwhinnie. It really is a cute little B&B in the middle of nowhere. There’s a few nice streams and hiking opportunities in the surrounding hills, which is very nice, but don’t think you’re going out drinking if you stay here. It’s very peaceful, clean and well-kept - perfect for a first relaxing night in Scotland. If you’re arriving on a weekend, I’d suggest staying in Edinburgh so you can enjoy the nightlife there, but coming in here on a weekday is just fine.
Day 2 - From here, I started up to Mallaig, which is a 1.5 hour drive from Dalwhinnie. On the way, there are a few great things to stop by and see. En route, you have to stop at Fort William, an old Scottish fort-town. It’s got tons of great shops and little restaurants to eat at. I bought an awesome raincoat here for $60, so it’s not outrageously priced. It’s definitely a must to stop at, and is also close to Ben Nevis. Ben Nevis is the tallest mountain in the Scottish region that take about 8.5 hours to climb, round trip. If you’re outdoorsy, it’s a big tourist destination and can get you moving and your blood pumping. The view at the top is one you’ll never forget. If you’re a new climber, I’d think it may be a good idea to do a half-climb up, as it does get quite tricky in some areas. Just past Fort William you’ll find Glenfinnan, where they have the Hogwarts Express. It’s a quick 20 min detour from the main route, and you’ll see the train winding through the mountains as you drive as well. This is actually called the Jacobite Stream Train, but if you’re a Harry Potter fan, this is definitely a quick stop you must take. Finally in Mallaig, you’ll smell the sea and salt, in this little ferry town. There are a couple of great coffee shops here, and I highly recommend staying at the West Highland Hotel. The rooms are small but clean, there are no key-cards for the doors(they are actual keys), but the bathrooms are completely renovated and there is a bar, restaurant and library on the main level. At night, people sit in the reception area and there is live music near the bar, so it’s perfect to meet other travellers and enjoy some Scottish sounds. The hotel is also located a bit up on a hill, overlooking the inlet. It’s a great view, and I would definitely stay here again. If you are taking a ferry the next day to the Isle of Skye, it’s best to book it the night before, It books up quickly, and if you don‘t have a confirmed ticket, there’s no guarantee you’ll get on with a car. You can book the ferry tickets at CalMac: www.ticketing.calmac.co.uk/booking/asp/web100.asp .
Day 3 - I made an early start in Mallaig to catch the 8am ferry over to the Isle of Skye. There’s a small coffee shop right by the ferry dock, where you can grab a quick bit to take and grab some java. The ferry is a short 30 minutes to the Isle of Skye, where you’ll land in Ardvasar. The island is actually quite large, so unless you stay a night here it’s best to do a pass-through and end up back on the mainland. I chose to visit the Fairy Pools, which is about an hour from the ferry. Staying on the island can be quite costly, running you about $200/night for a small room. Along the road to the fairy pools, you’ll see tons of gorgeous waterfalls and off-road scenery. It‘s an awesome drive on a good sunny day. When you get to the fairy pools, located in Glen Brittle, you’ll see parking is limited. It’s best to park on the road, and then walk down to the entrance. It’s really just a bunch of waterfalls running down from the mountains, which makes for an incredibly breathtaking scene. You can walk up quite a bit, but once you get to a certain point they all look the same, so I suggest going up about 30 minutes. The water is cold, clear and refreshing. If you're daring, you can definitely take swim, but it is quite chilling and there is no place out of the open to dry off. You can also check out Dunvegan, which is another hour north, however the Fairy Pools are the so serene, it’s good to budget at least an hour and a half here. Look out for Moo-Cows as well, which can be found en-route to the Fairy Pools. Head back to Kyleakin, where you can take cross over a bridge to the mainland. Right in Kyleakin there is a grocery store, gas station and some really cute restaurants. You can enjoy a late lunch here on your way back over. The bridge is pretty cool, and quite long, offering a great view of Loch Alsh. Try to do the cross-over before 4pm or so, as you’ll be able to stop into Eilean Donan castle. It’s got tons of great history, and has been passed down for generations within the current family, so there are tons of interesting objects in the home. It’s right on the loch, which makes for some incredible photo opps. The castle closes around 6pm, so be sure to get there before. From the castle, head up to Inverness, which is about 1hr30min. You’ll drive right beside Loch Ness - unfortunately, I didn’t catch Nessy on my trip, but maybe you’ll be lucky enough to. Inverness was by far my favourite place in Scotland. It’s all based around the river, and there’s a decent nightlife here as well. There’s tons of things to do for tourists here, as well as great shopping at their main downtown mall. Small boutique shops have tartans for every clan you can imagine in the downtown as well, and there’s tons of food(including McDonalds - however please don’t,,.. just don’t). All of the bars and pubs run along the River Ness, making it easy to pub-hop and check out all sorts of different bars. You can stay at the Crown Court Hotel($164/night), which is about a 10 minute walk into downtown through a few beautiful side street. The houses along here are all older and covered in flowers and greenery, so it’s a great walk. You’ll pass Inverness Castle on the way in, and if you really like you can go to the top of the castle to see a great view of the entire town during open hours.
Day 4 - The next day, grab breakfast or brunch in Inverness(tons of great spots downtown), and then head out to Culloden Moor, which is just outside of Inverness. You can pay for a tour by entering into the main building once you arrive, or you can park a bit closer near the entrance itself and walk yourself around the fields. This is where the Jacobite army fought against British troops, and were basically destroyed. There are tons of plaques as you do the walk around explaining different components of the battle, as well as headstones for the different clans and flag poles marking the position of the British and Jacobites. It is a must-see, full of history and amazing to see what happened on that soil back in 1746. After checking out Culloden, you can either stay another night in Inverness(which I would have done if I could redo the trip), or head up to Dornoch. Dornoch is a bit more north, and follows the sea with is really nice. However, the farther north you go, the cooler it gets. Up in Dornoch, there’s the opportunity to see Dunrobin Castle before heading into your hotel. This is an incredibly well architected castle with amazing gardens, and really cool to see. If you decide to stay in Dornoch, I highly recommend staying at the Dornoch Hotel($90/night). It’s right off the sea, and has a great restaurant in the hotel. Dornoch itself is a great little Scottish town, with some awesome restaurants and sweet shops. It’s quite small, so you can walk downtown from the hotel, but if you choose to drive there are tons of parking spots available. If you get to Dornoch before sunset, it’s a quick walk through the golf course outside of the hotel to the beach. The beach is absolutely stunning, with white sand and cool water. I actually ended up getting a sunburn here, not realizing how strong the sun was!
Day 5 - If you’re up for it, I highly recommend doing a horseback riding tour at Highlands Unbridled, about 30-40 minutes from Dornoch. You can choose rides of a few hours, or a day ride. Depending on your experience level, you’re able to gallop along the beach, or just happily walk along - they’re great at gaging the best experience for the group. They have a ton of different ponies, all of which are fantastically well cared for and seem quite happy, including Highland Ponies. I am not a pony person, I prefer horses, however these ponies were my absolute favourite! The day trek includes a stop at the top of one of the hills for lunch, so be sure to pack enough water and food to get your through a 6 hour day. You can check them out here: www.highlandsubridled.co.uk. After the horse trek, you’ll most likely be quite tired, so staying in Dornoch is idea. The Dornoch hotel has great ocean views and is quite relaxing - you’ll most likely be sore the next day if you’re not used to riding.
Day 6 - Make a late start to head back down Fife area. You can do this 1 of 2 ways depending on your tolerance for driving. You can take the coastal route down the east coast, stopping in Aberdeen for lunch and completing a total trip of 5 hours, or you can cut through the inland for a total trip time of 4 hours. Both are great drives, but if you like the sea then I would suggest spending that extra hour. Your destination is Anstruser, a small town with the most amazing fish and chips you can possibly find. Even the Princes eat the fish and chips from here at the Anstruser Fish Bar, and were seen here often during their studies in St. Andrews. It is absolutely to die for! This little sea town has tons of one-way streets, which can be a bit frustrating at times, but there is little need to walk if you stay at the Murray Library Hoes Hostel. Although it’s a hostel, can book private rooms here as well for a great price. It’s has renovated washrooms, super clean rooms, awesome common spaces and is right beside the sea. The hostel owners are extremely friendly, and the place is very secure. I would highly recommend to stay here if in the area. There are also a ton of great trails in this little town, one of which will take you out to the meadows outside of town. The Scottish landscape can truly be appreciated here, giving you a mix of beautiful fields and the sea. In the summer there’s live music and festivals in the main square by the beach, which is a great spot to meet people. The town is super friendly and a great place to wind down and ground yourself.
Day 7 - Make your way down to Edinburgh, which is about an hour from Anstruther. There’s no need to rush out, as it’s beautiful to watch the sun rise over the ocean. Once you get to Edinburgh, there’s a ton of great sites to see. There’s lots of walking to be done, so park your car at the Safestay Edinburgh, where you can stay the night and be central to the city for $120/night. Head into the old town of Edinburgh, where you’ll find old architecture and, of course, the Edinburgh Castle. You’ll have to pay a fee to get in, but it’s something that should be done if you’re interested in history. The gardens around the castle are also beautiful, and you can walk around the main streets into back alleys and different shops, which are scattered all over the old town. There's also tons of churches that are absolutely stunning. Be ware - you can’t take photos unless you pay a fee, so if you’re going to use a camera make sure you’re sneaky about it! The bars and pubs here are endless, so if you’re looking for some good nightlife the city is really your oyster. Bramble is a small bar that has amazing beer, and is very well known - making it easy to meet people as it’s always packed. For breakfast, try Roseleaf, which has amazing reviews and lives up to these reviews with their awesome food. Edinburgh is really a city for walking and drinking, so enjoy the livelihood and density, which is a sharp change from the north.
Day 8 - This day can either be spent in Edinburgh, or you can head out on this day to Glasgow(an hour drive) to catch a flight home. If you prefer, you can also leave from Edinburgh, however dropping the car here will most likely be more expensive as it will be different from where you picked it up.
Scotland is a stunning country rich of heritage and thick accents. The north is absolutely perfect if you’re looking for adventure, with the stark contrast to Edinburgh and it’s density, which makes for an awesome nightlife and the opportunity to meet tons of new people.
Hopefully you have the opportunity to enjoy Scotland and all it has to offer. Happy travels, and remember -
Travel far, Wander further.

From the planner, Michelle Elaine… I absolutely loved working with Lauren! We planned together for about 14 months so time was on our side to get every last detail perfectly nailed down. Her natural style carried over into her wedding design displaying that same class and elegance. The vision created was timeless, with antique silver candelabras, lush white florals, gorgeous table garlands and slight touches of deep navy, courtesy of our talented calligrapher, Tara Jones. Lauren’s wedding dress, a stunning Oscar de la Renta, completely took everyone’s breath away as she walked down the aisle; I couldn’t even keep it together as I prepared her to walk!
Following the ceremony, the couple had portraits done as my team ensured no detail was missed at the venue. Lauren wanted to create the reception in a way that guests would enjoy a very formal, seated dinner and then be entertained on the pool deck by an incredible band to dance the night away, which they did!
From the bride, Lauren… Dan and I both went to the University of Southern California and were introduced by mutual friends. The first 2 years of our relationship were long-distance, trading weekends up and down the coast between LA and San Francisco, before ending up in Venice Beach. But while our life together is very much rooted in California, I knew immediately after we got engaged that I wanted our wedding to take place in my home state.
My parents both have homes near the Jersey Shore, so when we visit during the summer that has become our home base. It was important for us to have a Catholic ceremony, and as soon as we saw Saint Catharine’s, a stunning historic church, in Spring Lake, the most charming Victorian beach town, we knew it was meant to be.
After choosing the location, we set out to find the right vendors. I actually discovered both Michelle Elaine Weddings and Trent Bailey in the same Style Me Pretty post, and after exhaustive research, I’m so glad I went with my gut and hired them both! Trent’s editorial style was exactly what we were looking for in a photographer; and Michelle not only kept track of every detail leading up to the wedding, making long-distance planning a breeze but also perfectly executed our vision on the day.
We wanted everything to feel very elegant, classic and timeless. Dan and I both tend to favor neutral colors, so we chose that palette for the wedding as well. Almost everything was white or ivory, with accents of gray and antique silver, and a very dark navy for the calligraphy. I’m obsessed with all things paper and calligraphy and immediately fell in love with Tara Jones’ work, which really set the tone for the rest of the details.
The day of the wedding was a dream. My bridesmaids, who all wore different gray dresses of their choosing, came over to my dad’s house, and my mom brought over “Father of the Bride” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” to play while we got ready. Dan and I gave each other gifts (pearl earrings for me, vintage cufflinks for him), and notes that we had written earlier. It rained that morning, and I think I was the only one who actually wasn’t worried about it… My trusty weather app told me the sun would come out at 2, just in time for the wedding, and sure enough, as we pulled up to the church in the trolley, singing “Going to the Chapel,” the clouds parted and the sun started shining.
I didn’t want anything to distract from my dress, so I carried a simple bouquet of white tulips and lily of the valley… and a huge smile, which I could not keep off my face! My father walked me down the aisle and we had a full mass, with readings by my godmother and Dan’s sister, and a solo of “Amazing Grace” performed by one of my bridesmaids.
Before the reception, the bridal party took the trolley back to my dad’s house, which is one of my favorite places in the world, for portraits. The photographs Trent captured there are so special to us. When we got to the reception, Dan and I snuck into the ballroom before heading out to cocktail hour to see the set-up and have a moment (and some food) to ourselves. It was so thrilling to see every detail we’d spent so much time planning brought to life and to spend a few moments alone as a married couple reflecting on everything before heading out to take it all in together.
While I had always dreamed of a traditional black-tie wedding, it was really important to us that our guests (many of whom flew across the country to be there) could still feel comfortable and have fun. The Spring Lake Bath & Tennis Club was the perfect venue to accommodate that, with its old-school East Coast charm and oceanfront setting being just the right amount of formal, without feeling stuffy. After the cocktail hour on the oceanfront pavilion (with signature Dirty Martini and Old Fashioned cocktails), we moved inside to the ballroom for a candlelit seated dinner. After 3 brilliant toasts and a delicious meal, the party moved back outside under the stars (actually, a tent filled with twinkly lights). I changed into a custom-made strapless ivory column dress and white Adidas, and we cut the cake with a champagne saber my mom’s boyfriend gave us as an engagement gift. The Around Town Band did not disappoint, and the dance floor was packed the whole night. Actually, I think the only time we were sad the whole day is when they played their last song!
The best piece of advice I received (and, thankfully, actually listened to!) is to be present – enjoy yourself, and be yourself. It really does go by so fast, so don’t miss a moment by worrying about something silly. Spend the whole day having fun with your new husband, your families, and all the people who are there to celebrate you! Thanks to Michelle and her team, we were able to feel like guests at our own wedding, which is how everyone should experience it.

Sydney Hotel and pleasure gardens, Bath
Dido Twite has been doing a lot of travelling, first on a British naval ship from Nantucket to Tenby, and then by riverboat and railway to Bath Regis. Why Joan Aiken chose to bring her young heroine here is complex — I’ve discussed some of the background elsewhere — but as this is the most involved part of the story in The Stolen Lake where geography is concerned it’s only right that I outline, in greater detail and in a separate post, how matters stand.
When Dido, Captain Hughes, Mr Holystone and the others arrive late evening in the capital of New Cumbria it soon becomes apparent that Bath Regis has a sinister air about it: after alighting from the train Dido finds herself “on an icy, windswept stone pavement, inadequately sheltered by a thatched canopy. The air was bitter.” They take a pair of hackney carriages from the paved forecourt of the station (despite the allure of a sedan chair for Dido) and the impression she gets is that “for a capital city [Bath Regis] seemed very quiet and glum”; the captain deems it “a devilish dismal place, and … cold as a coffin.” A ten-minute trot takes them over “a covered bridge with closed market-stalls on either side, and along an extremely wide street” to Sydney Hotel, where Dido manages to catch some sleep in a damp and freezing bed.
Late 18th-century plan of Bath with Bath Regis locations superimposed
All these descriptions of this South American Bath will put readers in mind of Jane Austen’s Bath in the Regency period. In Northanger Abbey the young heroine Catherine is “all eager delight; her eyes were here, there, and everywhere,” and you may remember the cri de coeur “Oh, who can ever be tired of Bath?” On the other hand, when we come to the posthumously published Persuasion, Anne Elliot is described as disliking Bath, “and did not think it agreed with her.” Similarly, the young Dido has great hopes for Bath Regis — she’s been told the streets are paved with silver — but like the mature Jane she soon finds herself no longer so enamoured of the place.
Sydney Gardens labyrinth: image credit Bath in Time, http://www.bathintime.co.uk/image/195230/the-labyrinth-in-sydney-gardens-bath
The Sydney Hotel of The Stolen Lake is based on the original 18th-century building in England’s Bath now known as the Holburne Museum. The Austen family would eventually take rooms at nearby No 4 Sydney Place, but even before that, as Jane writes in a letter dated 21st January 1801 to her sister Cassandra, “It would be very pleasant to be near Sydney Gardens; we might go into the labyrinth every day.” The Pleasure Gardens were a popular public place in this period: 19th-century plans show a spiral pattern on the lower south side of the open space (later encroached on by the railway) which indicates the labyrinth that Austen refers to and which clearly gave the 25-year-old author great pleasure. However, the labyrinth — whether or not Joan Aiken intended it or not — is a splendid metaphor for The Stolen Lake‘s convoluted plot as well as a prefiguring of the maze-like paths that Dido has faced and will face, from the secret steps down from the White Hart Inn to the wharves in Tenby, to the passages in the silver mines served by an underground railway that lead to the Royal Palace.
It will not have escaped your notice that Bath Regis shares its epithet with our own Bognor Regis and Lyme Regis, two seaside resorts favoured by Georgian royalty (and in fact Lyme Regis, where the Austen family holidayed, famously features in Persuasion). Regis means ‘of the King’ and is therefore appropriate for this city where Queen Ginevra awaits her Rex Quondam, the King Who Once Was.
From a balcony in the Sydney Hotel Dido sees the whole of Bath Regis laid out in its hilly basin. She looks down the silver-cobbled Pulteney Street to the covered bridge (our Pulteney Bridge, here in New Cumbria named after Venice’s Rialto Bridge). On her left is a high wooded hill crowned with a tall slender tower (the equivalent of Bathampton’s Sham Castle of the mid-18th century, though the latter is a many-tower’d façade).
The Sham Castle, Bathampton, Bath from an old postcard
The bridge spanning the River Severn is covered in booths advertising meat, milk, flowers, vegetable and fruit as well as bread. Across the bridge is Orange Grove, “a small street of superior dwellings,” where a sign saying Mme Ettarde, Modiste indicates the classical villa from which the witch — variously titled Court Dressmaker, Mistress of the Queen’s Robes and First Lady of the Bedchamber — plies her business. Adjacent to Orange Grove is what Lieutenant Windward notes is a very ‘singular’ building: Bath Palace is large, circular and surrounded by a moat fed by the Severn. Five or six storeys high and covered in reflective metal it revolves on itself, like the BT Tower in London, though the forthright Dido declares it looks more like “an outsize milk-churn”. Entry is through a revolving door, accessible only when the palace returns to a position facing a narrow bridge over the moat. (In our world Bath Abbey is found in the self-same location, its façade revealing angels ascending to heaven by means of ladders.)
The Palace’s alternate name is Caer Sisi, the second word perhaps taken by the Spanish for ‘yes’ and which Mr Holystone occasionally mutters. It derives from the medieval Welsh poem The Spoils of Annwn. As Caer Sidi it is one epithet amongst many for the Celtic Otherworld — Caer Rigor is another, meaning Royal Castle — which King Arthur and his men raid. The expedition seek for treasures like a giant cauldron rimmed with pearls, and rescue prisoners incarcerated within (we’re told that “except seven, none returned from Caer Sidi”). Sidi is variously translated as ‘revolving’ or ‘faery’.
Detail of 1810 plan of Bath showing Orange Grove, Pulteney Bridge spanning the river and Great Pulteney Street; in Bath Regis the circular Palace is found just off Orange Grove.
Nearby is the Museum, another ancient Roman building, its entrance sporting a Medusa head. (This first appeared on the pediment of Bath’s Roman temple, copied in 1909 for the temple erected in Sydney Gardens.) The Museum features the Thirteen Treasures of Britain, while the Zoological Garden displays the Four Oldest Creatures; both these legendary collections of course derive from medieval Welsh traditions, such as the Mabinogion. The Roman Baths are here too, the waters heated by means of the nearest volcano, Mount Damyake, and the Pump Room, the mineral water tasting “like unwashed duck’s feet,” as Dido has it.
Captain Hughes, Ludovic Brandywinde and Silver Taffy are later incarcerated on Beechen Cliff in the Wen Pendragon tower, a residence built by the Queen in anticipation of the return of King Arthur. Joan Aiken may have in mind the descriptions of the heights overlooking Bath from the south which she knew from Austen’s Northanger Abbey. (Maybe the suspense built up in this Gothick story inspired Aiken to do the same for this present narrative.)
They determined on walking round Beechen Cliff, that noble hill, whose beautiful verdure and hanging coppice render it so striking an object from almost every opening in Bath. “I never look at it,” said Catherine, as they walked along the side of the river, “without thinking of the south of France.”‘
It now remains to furnish the final details of Dido’s perambulations around Bath Regis. When Dido, King Arthur and the army from Lyonesse approach the city from the south, they march over Odd Down (“one of the foothills of Mount Damyake”), naturally arriving at the South Gate (now commemorated by Southgate Street). They then proceed north up Damask Street (a thinly disguised Stall Street) and lastly east, turning right into Ertayne Street (Cheap Street) before approaching the Palace and the confrontation with the White Queen.
Whence these names — Ertayne, Damask, Damyake — and what is their significance? Our investigation of these will require us to abandon Jane Austen and instead seek enlightenment with Sir Thomas Malory and his ilk, examining as we go the themes that Joan Aiken has interwoven in The Stolen Lake and which pattern to a greater or lesser extent all the Wolves Chronicles. Bear with me as we finally near the end of luxuriating in the rich texture of this particular narrative. I promise you’ll find a reading (and subsequent re-readings) so much more comprehensible, and even more enjoyable!
• I’ve consulted a number of sources, both from my shelves and online, for this series of posts. I shall be listing some Arthurian references in the next post; here are a couple of online links I found useful for quick consultation on Jane Austen’s time in Bath: https://austenonly.com/2010/03/06/jane-austen-in-bath-sydney-place/ https://austenonly.com/2010/03/12/jane-austen-in-bath-the-sydney-garden-galas-1-music/ http://www.seekingjaneausten.com/bath.html http://www.bathboutiquestays.co.uk/luxury-apartment-rental-bath/
