Today while shopping at the Antique Center of La Crosse and I found a little piece of Florida history and had to take it home. Kinda shocked at the fact I found this all the way in Wisconsin.
The Parliament House Resort in Orlando, Florida, traces its roots to a modest lakeside motor inn inaugurated on February 11, 1962, at 410 North Orange Blossom Trail. Initially, boasting 120 rooms and a burgeoning reputation as a premier event venue, it quickly gained traction under the management of Ned Eddy, Jr., and his brother, James (Jimmy) Eddy. Despite early success, by 1975, the property faced financial turmoil, prompting its acquisition by Bill Miller and Michael Hodge for $648,000. Their stewardship heralded a transformative era, culminating in the emergence of the Parliament House Resort as a celebrated LGBTQ+ destination, renowned for its vibrant nightlife and inclusive atmosphere.
Since its rebirth, the Parliament House has served as a cornerstone of Orlando’s LGBTQ+ community, offering a sanctuary for self-expression and camaraderie. Evolving from a modest motor inn to a sprawling entertainment complex, it not only provided a platform for cultural events but also fostered a sense of unity and pride within the LGBTQ+ community. Over the years P-house featured such acts as Charo, Macy Gray, Jennifer Holiday, Chaka Khan, Eartha Kitt, Cyndi Lauper, RuPaul, Salt-N-Pepa , The Weather Girls, and even Gloria Gaynor. Personally, I remember sitting and enjoying drag shows hosted by Darcel Stevens and the Footlight Players, and dancing to music played by DJ Brianna Lee. Despite its closure in 2020, the Parliament House’s legacy endures as a reflection of its pivotal role in shaping LGBTQ+ rights and culture, leaving an indelible mark on Orlando’s vibrant social fabric.

(Weeki Wachee Springs mermaids)
Sleeping Princess (from Edison in Florida, The Green Laboratory by Olav Thulesius)
The Edisons felt threatened in their tropical paradise. After the completion of the Tamiami Trail, the trickle of people coming south became a flood of tens of thousands. The boom was on. According to Suniland magazine; "Lethargy was forgotten. The sleeping princess [Fort Myers] was awake- and madly in love with the good-looking prince. Prices began that sky-rocketing process so typical of Florida towns."
The same issue contained a cartoon with the capiton: "Gamblers, note!" It showed pirates climbing up from the sea threatening to take possesion of Florida with arms and shovels.
In a single day, August 12, 1925, $2,528,000 worth of real estate was sold. Edison liked privacy. Although he enjoyed publicity to promote his ideas and inventions, he wanted to be able to escape, to hide.
Edison wanted "the oblivion of still life" and to be in control of all aspects of his work. On his first visit he learned that he could have access to the International Ocean Telegraph line that passed through the sleepy town on the way to Punta Russa. In fact, in the 1880s Fort Myers was one of the few places in Florida that could provide this luxury of modern communication.
The telegraph made it possible for Edison to keep in touch with his business up north. And finally, there was a unique attraction: he loved to fish, and Fort Myers offered the opportunity to sit quietly on a pier fishing in the calm waters of Caloosahatchee.

This set depicts Pánfilo de Narváez's arrival in Florida in 1528, along with his group of 350 Spanish conquistadors. The scene captures the stark contrast between the Spanish invaders and the native Indians, as they faced a hostile reception upon their arrival.
The environment is characterized by lush vegetation, towering palm trees, and vibrant tropical colors that create a vivid and striking contrast between the two cultures. Pánfilo de Narváez and his men are depicted in the foreground, armed and ready for battle, while the native Indians are shown in the background, watching warily and preparing to defend their land.
These images serve as a powerful representation of the clash between two very different cultures, and the struggle for dominance that ensued. It is a reminder of the complex and often violent history of colonialism, and the ongoing efforts to understand and reconcile the wounds of the past. #PánfiloDeNarváez #FloridaHistory #Colonialism #CulturalClash #IndigenousResistance #PowerDynamic #Conquistadors #AIhistorian

#fortlonesome (and man is it lonesome lmao desolate) found roughly 36 miles from Tampa in the #rural southeastern region of #hillsboroughcounty and is primarily an area used for farming #history — Once upon a time, in the early 1930’s, a sawmill very briefly revived Dort Lonesome, along with a few houses and about three stores. Unfortunately, that was short lived glory for the area, as a fire destroyed the mill. Eventually the "town" disappeared also. #floridahistory #floridafacts #floridalocals #therealflorida #themoreyouknow #tampabay #flogrown #theunicornfloridian #sunshinestate #youlearnsomethingneweveryday #uselessknowledge (at Fort Lonesome, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRLWc1Qscnp/?utm_medium=tumblr
