I am back at home with David and Westin, who is currently sitting on my lap and purring. :)
The rest of my Florida trip was amazing. My cousins and I went to Wekiwa Springs and Blue Springs State Parks on Sunday. We got to swim in the natural springs, which were beautiful!! We kayaked down the river and got lunch at a little manmade island, and my highlight was kayaking right alongside a swimming gator TWICE :)) we also saw a lot of wetland turtles and birds enjoying the sun and water. It was such a gorgeous day.
The water at Blue Springs State Park was an incredible shade of clear emerald (I joked that they should rename the park, lmao), and we also came across a flock of black vultures that let us walk among them. :)
I completely fell in love with the nature of Florida. I can't wait to go back sometime and go to the Everglades!
Our Sunday evening and night was a lot of fun too. My cousin and I went on a fetch quest to get everything we needed for a homemade Indian feast of chaat and tandoori chicken flatbreads, and we cooked it together while watching the Super Bowl. It was a delight to see the Chiefs lose and the Eagles win, and the Kendrick Lamar halftime show was >>>>>
I said the same thing after I visited my aunt, uncle, and my other cousins in Philadelphia for Thanksgiving, but this weekend was really magical. I was so happy and enjoyed the sense of true connection and joy with family, that I never had with my parents. I'm excited to finally get to enjoy the family members I choose as an adult, and looking forward to spending more time with them in the future. It was so cathartic to talk with my cousin, who has gone through some similar life experiences, and is another nature and travel and book loving, feminist, lover of animals and cat person. ❤️
I had a good flight back from Orlando reading book 2 of The Accursed Kings series by Maurice Druon, and I got a deep tissue massage yesterday evening, which felt really nice after the travel day. :)

Bullshit bull sharks
Titusville, with it's PG-13 name, makes us the most responsible we have been the entire trip. A 6:45 wake up call to visit rocks spring kayaks disturbs our slumber. Illness, disease and hangovers have afflicted us along the coast, and today is no different. Derek drives the Pacifica (should be called Atlantica) to the attractions door, as half our crew musters their strength for the day. Along the way we are met with torrential rain, and fear that the entire day will be cancelled. We press onward, and are rewarded handsomely.
We drive down rural roads and arrive at our destination. What can only be described as Florida rock music blares as we pass sawed-in-half canoes and ripe outhouses. Before we board our canoes we pass "the news" a majestic great blue heron, honed in on a baby alligator it intends to spear. We know we are in for a treat.
Our canoes are clear plastic vessels, scaled up plastic bottles cut in half. As we start to paddle Joel and I meet a mother and son who just completed a lap around the marsh. The boy points north and tells us that way "has some cool stuff". Fortunately our guide Sarah agrees, and we start our journey upstream. The murky stream turns to clear glass, and minnows and small fish scour the riverbed.
It's difficult to steer the boats, and we clumsily run into eachother around every twist and turn. Friend, strangers and trees serve as bumpers along the narrow stream. Nobody capsizes, but there are close calls. Dotted along the river are private cabins, and we fantasize what it would be like to live such a life. A private river and mornings spent listening to alligator growls and bird calls speaks to all of us.
The grey skies and intermittent rain work in our favor. Our guide informs us that on hot days, 100's of people crowd the river. We pass very few and are privileged to explore in solitude. We all agree we would choose this over the crowds.
Racoons, herons, otters and fish visit us on our tour, but gators, the only animal we were promised, elude us. However, the experience is fantastic, and none of us seem to mind.
A tired drive back to the lodge is followed by an afternoon nap. Ingredients are gathered for tacos, and we enjoy the second home cooked meal of the trip. Our stomachs and wallets rejoice.
Fatigued from the day and longing for croquet, the twins stroll out the door and make a course by the bay.
We see creatures in the water across from our apartment. Hot debates are had between manatees, alligators, sharks and mermaids. Dylan swears he sees a set of jaws, but ultimately we settle on manatees.
As the sun begins to set, we stroll out for a game of mallets. Dylan splits and goes for a solo walk down to the pier. With a gentle breeze blowing, he shares an intimate moment with a manatee on the dock.
Croquet is a fine course. The thicket before the wickets is dense, hard shots with little gain. Joel claims his third victory in a row, and is now unfazed by his win. Orlando has treated us right, and only Miami lies ahead.
Blake
A few additional notes by Derek
- Dylan and I had some brotherly love on our dual kayak. Felt like we were twelve again.
- The swimming things totally could have been a pod of bull Sharks. Everyone was swapping crocs, manatees, and sharks, and the only absurd answer was croc.
- I stepped in an ant hill and got bit to shit. My poor feet can't catch a break.

Mother Ocean Day
Pay homage to the incredible force of nature that is the ocean, which houses over a million different species, many of which are endangered or threatened.
Water is essential to human life. In fact, it is essential to all of the forms of life known to humankind in general, as there are no known species that can survive without it.
Though marine biologists are unsure just how many kinds of creatures reside in our planet’s 5 oceans, it is estimated that about one-quarter of all of the Earth’s species do. Not to mention how very important the oceans are to our civilization—for thousands of years, braving their waters has been one of the bravest feats a human being could accomplish, one that often led to amazing discoveries and the general increase of our knowledge of the planet we inhabit.
For all of these reasons and many, many more, Mother Ocean Day is a long-overdue celebration of our oceans in all of their majesty and peril.
History of Mother Ocean Day
Mother Ocean Day is relatively a new celebration, as it was introduced for the first time in 2013. It is a concept thought up by the South Florida Kayak Fishing Club that has since sought the approval of the City of Miami to declare this a day official. The point, of course, is to take a day to celebrate the beauty and wonder of the ocean, and it is no surprise that inhabitants of Florida were the ones to come forward with this idea, as Florida is famous for particularly gorgeous white sand beaches and clear, aquamarine waters.
Different themes
Every year, there is a different theme that is selected for Mother Ocean Day. Some of the different themes that there have been over the years include the likes of…
Gender and Oceans
Our Oceans, Our Future
Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet
Our Oceans: greening our future
Our Oceans, Our Responsibilities
Why is the ocean so important?
The ocean is not purely there for us to swim in and enjoy. It is critical for the survival of our plant, and it has been taken for granted for too long now! There are five oceans that make up our planet – the Antarctic or the Southern Ocean, as well as the Arctic, Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic oceans. Did you know that these five oceans cover around 70 percent of the Earth? Moreover, did you know that the ocean is responsible for producing more than half of the world’s oxygen? If that was not enough, it also absorbs 50 times more carbon dioxide when compared with our atmosphere.
The ocean is also responsible for helping with the regulation of the Earth’s climate, with the vast coverage of the ocean able to transport heat from the equator to the South and North poles. This will regulate the weather patterns as well as the climate. And, of course, we cannot mention the ocean without speaking about the life that calls it home! This includes everything from the sea turtles in the Pacific to the manatees in the Atlantic ocean.
Fascinating facts about our oceans
The ocean is a truly fascinating place. To illustrate this, we have put together a collection of exciting and surprising facts about the ocean…
We still only know a fraction of our oceans’ marine species. There are now 240,470 accepted species in accordance with the World Register of Marine Species. However, it is believed that this is just a very small portion of the species that are in existence.
There are more historic artefacts under the ocean than in museums all around the world. There are actually around 1,000 shipwrecks just off the Florida Keys alone! There have been a number of underwater museums that have been created over the years. This includes the Christ of the Abyss, which is a submerged bronze statue in the Mediterranean.
The longest chain of mountains is virtually entirely beneath the ocean. This is known as the Mid-Ocean Ridge. It stretches across a distance of 65,000 km. it is believed that the Mid-Ocean Ridge is less explored than the surface of Mars or Venus.
Less than five percent of the oceans on the planet has been explored. Yes, we’re getting to know our oceans more and more, yet there is still a lot that has not been discovered.
Did you know that the majority of life on Earth is aquatic? It may come as no shock when you consider the fact that so much of the surface of the Earth is underwater. Nevertheless, it is still incredible to think that 94 percent of our living species exist within the ocean!
How to celebrate Mother Ocean Day
There are many things people can do on Mother Ocean Day, what’s important is to pay homage to this incredible force of nature and enjoy what it has to offer to the full. Taking to the waves, whether this be on a boat or a surfboard, is one way to enjoy the day. Snorkeling and diving are both unforgettable ways to get to know the ocean better by taking a look at some of the plants, fish and other creatures living in it. If you prefer to stay on dry land, a picnic on the beach enjoying the calm, soothing sound of the waves could be the perfect way for you to appreciate the ocean. Just remember to clean up afterwards! And for those who wish to celebrate the day from the comfort of their own home, eating a meal made from foods of the ocean, such as fish and shellfish, could be a deliciously appropriate way to go about observing this occasion.
For example, have you ever tried langoustines? Langoustines are an excellent alternative to lobsters, as they are much cheaper, but have a similar flavor some chefs even find superior to lobster because of its delicate sweetness. They are also surprisingly easy to prepare—all you really need is some salty water to briefly boil them, and some garlic butter to brush over them. If you love your barbecue, langoustines can also be barbecued and then dipped in a simple dijon mustard sauce. Originally, langoustines were eaten in Europe, but they have recently become popular in North America as well, so if you have never tried them, this day is the perfect time!
However, regardless of whether it’s Mother Ocean Day or not, we should always respect the oceans and the beaches leading into them by never polluting them in any way, so future generations can enjoy them as much as we do today.

Here’s why Florida Keys RV lot rentals are a must-try for your next vacation.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c8f856e268d505029cbf172355644ea4/303dbfd97587bc14-e1/s540x810/50724eb0bb941cd83947cc55553fb337e8abedf0.jpg)
A Unique Way to Experience the Florida Keys
Staying in an RV in the Florida Keys offers an experience. Instead of being confined to a hotel room, RV lot rentals allow you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the islands. Many RV parks and lots are located in scenic areas, offering breathtaking ocean views, direct access to beaches, and proximity to iconic attractions. Imagine waking up to the sound of waves, stepping outside your RV, and watching the sunrise over crystal-clear waters—it’s paradise at your doorstep.
RV lots also give you the freedom to choose your preferred setting, whether it’s a bustling park with full amenities or a more secluded lot for quiet relaxation.
Cost-Effective Accommodation
One of the greatest advantages of RV lot rentals in the Florida Keys is the affordability they offer compared to traditional lodging. Hotels and resorts in the area can be expensive, especially during peak travel seasons. Renting an RV lot allows you to save money on accommodations while still enjoying the prime location and amenities the Keys are known for.
Additionally, RV travel lets you bring your kitchen, helping you save on dining costs. Many RV parks also offer discounts for extended stays, making it a budget-friendly option for snowbirds or long-term travelers.
Amenities That Enhance Your Stay
RV lot rentals in the Florida Keys often come with a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Many lots provide hookups for water, electricity, and sewage, along with Wi-Fi and cable TV. Some RV parks even have heated pools, fitness centers, laundry facilities, and organized activities like fishing tournaments or yoga classes.
For outdoor enthusiasts, RV lots often provide easy access to kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, and hiking. The Florida Keys are famous for their coral reefs, making it a prime destination for divers and marine life lovers.
Flexibility and Freedom
Unlike hotels, RV lot rentals offer unparalleled flexibility. With your home on wheels, you can explore multiple islands at your own pace. From Key Largo’s stunning diving spots to the lively atmosphere of Key West, RV travel allows you to see it all without the hassle of packing and unpacking.
This flexibility is ideal for adventurers who want to experience the diverse charm of the Keys, from nature preserves like Bahia Honda State Park to historic landmarks such as the Ernest Hemingway Home.

Interstate
Eating leftovers for breakfast and finishing the last of the peaches, the boys headed out for the 7h drive to Orlando. Joel pulled the first shift, and on our way out of Charleston, we witnessed a man hop his truck over the McDonald's drive-through curb, the immediate aftermath of a car being t-boned, and a van stalling out mid turn nearly causing Joel to slam the brakes.
Navigating the chaos, we finally made it onto the interstate and sailed quickly into Georgia. We remarked at how wooded everything still was and how the bush seemed to be getting more thick and jungled. Stopping at a gas station for a pee break, surprise struck...
The gas station had an entire section of Alligator heads.
Taken aback, and unsure how common this was, I stopped for a brief moment, before quickly proceeding to the toilets, not wanting to draw attention to my bewilderment in the busy station.
Hustling back to the van, I found Joel standing beside and informed him of my discovery. "What!" he exclaimed, "I've got to see this", and back into the gas station he went. Entering the air conditioned van, I then informed Allen and Dylan of the news only for Blake to show up at the van carrying a crocodile tooth keychain and Joel following with intent.
Whipping out phones, Joel spent the next minute googling import laws and after finding the all clear, ran back into the gas station. Now, anybody who knows Joel, knows that he has a particularly mischievous and loveable grin when he has an idea, and his face runnig back to us was no exception. Revealing his prize, Joel had purchased a Gator head.
Eventually naming the him Georgie, in honor of his origin in Georgia, the boys continued on. Listening to many a good podcasts (murder doctors, car salemens, and exotic bird feather theivery), we confirmed that the gator was sourced responsibly.
Eventually swapping drivers from Joel to me, the remaining drive was uneventful aside from brief spurts of rain, endless Ron Jon surf shop signs and even more endless cocoa beach billboards. Surprisingly, Florida is the coolest state on our vehicle visits, which reminds me of our west coat trip where it rained in Nevada on our arrival.
Our airBnb is nice and has plenty of space. We had some difficulty finding the third bedroom and were about to draw straws for who had to take the couch when its discovery was made via the garage. Dylan had to repair the room's air conditioner because the hose was disconnected and pumping the room with hot air, but aside from that, a comfortable stay.
Grabbing groceries and cooking chicken and rice, a meal was shared. Dylan tucked into bed early as he is still feeling sick and we have an early wake up tomorrow to make our kayak tour.
