Elizabeth II liked to drink a Martini before meeting guests when she was flying and always requested a particular type of mint sweet during take-off, it has emerged.

The late Queen also enjoyed following the route map while travelling.

Her flying habits are revealed in a treasure trove of memorabilia kept for decades by an air hostess who worked for British Airways for 28 years from 1970.

Elizabeth Evans, from Birmingham, served many famous travellers during her long career, among them the late Queen and Prince Philip during their 1989 tour of Singapore and Malaysia.

A collection of mementoes found in Mrs Evans’ study following her death contains confidential instructions on how to look after the royal couple.

The points of etiquette reveal that the late Queen liked a bowl of sugar-free Velamints beside her on take-off and that she should be left to doze if she was sleeping prior to landing.

She also preferred to use her own pillows, with her personal dresser advising on how to make up her bed.

Any guests joining the royals for dinner would be told what time cocktails were to be served in the royal compartment and the Queen would later be asked which wine she would like served with dinner.

“Her Majesty tends to like a Martini before her guests arrive,” the notes state.

Canapes were served with cocktails before the guests took their seats and staff were reminded that the late Queen must be served first.

One section of the notes is titled “Tips for Royal Compartment,” under which is listed: “Route map – Her Majesty enjoys looking at these.”

Members of the flight crew were told not to pass through the cabin and to restrict all noise.

The memorabilia, inherited by Mrs Evans’ niece, Jo Smallwood, is expected to fetch between £400-£600 when it goes under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers on August 20.

Charles Hanson, owner of the auctioneers, said:

“Elizabeth must have been extremely highly regarded by BA because she served some of the most important people in the world. Take that 1989 British Airways royal flight.

Her memorabilia includes confidential instructions on how to care for our late Queen and Prince Philip – right down to the sweets Her Majesty preferred on take-off.”

Velamints were launched in the US in 1977 and are said to have become president Ronald Reagan’s favourite mint.

They were dubbed “the Official Air Force 1 mint.”

Meanwhile, both the late Queen and her husband were known to be fond of a Martini, which they would typically enjoy before dinner.

In late 2021, a year before her death, it emerged that she had given up drinking on doctors’ orders.

She was said to favour a gin and Dubonnet at lunchtime, and a gin and vermouth cocktail before dinner.

Mrs Evans also crewed Concorde, the world’s first commercial supersonic airliner, which would fly at twice the speed of sound, during the 1980s and 1990s.

She kept signed menu cards and other paraphernalia relating to many of her VIP passengers, including Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the late Patrick Swayze.

Mr Hanson noted that although the late Queen had flown to Singapore and Malaysia on BA, she had closely followed Concorde’s development.

“Elizabeth’s archive sweeps us back in time to the 1970s, 80s and 90s when flying on Concorde was a luxurious privilege enjoyed by the wealthy jet-set,” he added.

“Celebrities flocked to use its services and carrying royalty was the norm. Service had to be first class.”

He said of the late Queen:

“She enjoyed her first supersonic flight in 1977 and used the aircraft for state visits.

The Queen of the Skies was seen as fitting transport for the Queen of the realm."

“In 1991, Charles and Diana, then the Prince and Princess of Wales, flew supersonic during a trip to Oman and Pakistan."

“Elizabeth gathered mementoes throughout her career. Her memorabilia captures the life and times of Concorde at its height and the detail that went into luxury travel with British Airways.

No VIP wish was too small to be accommodated. Even smoking was permitted on board back then.”

Ms Smallword, 53, a retired police officer, from Solihull, West Midlands, said:

“I was aware of some of the things Elizabeth had kept from her career with BA but nothing on this scale.

She married late in life, moving to Devon and finally Hermanus, in South Africa.

The objects were found there in her study following her death at the age of 70 in 2017.

I came across them when I travelled to South Africa to arrange the funeral.

Having found this treasure trove relating to my aunt’s career and experiences with BA, especially the fantastic trips on Concorde and serving the Queen, I found it sad that none of it had seen the light of day.

I believe this collection is a little piece of history that should be shared and enjoyed by somebody.”

Mrs Evans was awarded a certificate to commemorate the time she served the royals on British Airways flights.

She also amassed signatures from the likes of Warren Beatty, Virginia Wade and Billie Jean King, which will also be sold by Hansons.

There's a wonderful monochrome image of a BOAC de Havilland Comet 4 over Sydney Harbour. The harbour bridge is prominent, but look closely and you'll see there's no Opera House. That's because the photo was taken 60 years ago and the first British jet flew into Sydney's Mascot in 1959 before construction began on the Opera House. That flight slashed the journey time from London to Sydney from 47 hours to 36.

Four years earlier, the British Overseas Airways Corporation, one of the many forerunners of British Airways, had introduced a "tourist class" service on its Lockheed Constellation between Britain and Australia, introducing less wealthy travellers to airline travel.

Apart from Qantas, no international airline has had such a long-standing relationship between Australia and Europe as British Airways. So, as the airline celebrates its "centenary", let's mark some of the key moments in its evolution and its place in Australian travel, with much thanks to BA's official historian.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

British Airways didn't exist until 1936 and for most of the 20th century Britain's national carrier flew under a succession of other names, most notably BOAC and British European Airways. Yet the airline dates its birthday back to August 25, 1919. This is believed to be because Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij – better known as KLM – is generally considered the world's longest surviving airline. Its first flight from London's Croydon airport took off to Amsterdam, with a British pilot at the controls of a leased British plane, on May 17, 1920.

WORLD'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER SERVICE

Regardless, it's accepted the world's first scheduled international service took off on August 25, 1919, at 9.10am, from London's Hounslow Heath bound for Paris, piloted by "Bill" Lawford. The only passenger was an Evening Standard reporter who had paid Britain's first commercial airline, Aircraft Transport and Travel, 20 guineas for the privilege (though the flight also contained several "brace of grouse destined for the tables of discerning Parisians").

According to the reporter's exclusive after the de Hallivand's arrival at Le Bourget, the trip involved much "hedge-hopping" and "wave-hopping" as Lawford (in an open cockpit!) followed the railway lines and cross-Channel ferries, due to poor visibility, before rising to the maximum height of 4000 feet (1220 metres) over France.

Still, the first international commercial flight, was deemed a huge success, flying "at express speed" and taking a mere 2½ hours to cover 350 kilometres.

LONDON TO AUSTRALIA … IN JUST 12 DAYS

Aircraft Transport and Travel was joined by a plethora of privately-owned British airlines offering international journeys with flying aces from World War I as pilots. But the Brits struggled because rival European airlines were subsidised by governments. In 1924, British airlines were rationalised and Imperial Airways (the real forerunner of BA) was created with a mandate to develop routes to the furthest reaches of the British Empire: South Africa, India and Australia.

Fast forward to April 13, 1935, and Imperial and Qantas launched its ground-breaking, 20,500-kilometre service from London's Croydon airfield to Brisbane. The journey took just 12 days, leaving London at lunchtime on a Saturday, and arriving the following week at Brisbane – after 32 stops. Part of the trip, Paris to Brindisi, was completed by rail. Mussolini's fascist government refused permission for a foreign airline to fly over Italian airspace.

DON'T MENTION THE WAR

BOAC started operations on April Fool's Day 1940, during Britain's "darkest hour" as Imperial merged with British Airways. During World War II, BOAC and Qantas joined forces, particularly on the Horseshoe Route between Auckland and Durban that kept wartime correspondence flowing throughout the "empire".

Immediately after Germany's surrender, the two airlines combined on two different services. On May 31, 1945, the first post-war flight from Britain to Sydney left Bournemouth. A year later, they introduced a twice-weekly flying boat service between Poole harbour and Sydney's Rose Bay, which took just five days, via Egypt, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Burma and Singapore. And before May 1946 was out, the first post-war BOAC/Qantas land service began using converted Avro Lancaster bombers cunningly disguised as Lancastrian passenger planes.

The Lancastrian only accommodated nine passengers seated along the side of the fuselage like parachutists. But it did contain what it is arguably the first "flat bed" in commercial aviation – a bunk in what would now be considered the overhead locker. The switch over location between BOAC and Qantas staff was Karachi.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS

In December 1948, the elegant four-engine Lockheed Constellation began a weekly service that slashed flying time between Britain and Australia. A poster from that era, advertising Australia to Britons, shows outback stockmen watching the Constellation soar above them in a gum-strewn blue sky.

The Constellation record was itself smashed in 1953 when British European Airways, usually confined to Europe, entered the London-to-Christchurch air race to publicise the British-made Vickers Viscount V700's speed between "short legs" (19,900 kilometres in less than 41 hours). But it was the Comet that introduced the "jet age" to Australia, quickly followed by Boeing's 707, which BOAC used on Australian services from 1962. Another poster, showing a blonde female surfer striding towards the Pacific is from that period, circa 1965.

Over the next 30 years British Airways purchased 36 Boeing 747s – the original "jumbo jet" – more than any other airline and several flew to Australia. But BA's Concorde, which flew at 2180km/h (cruise speed) from 1969-2003, never had a chance to test the record to Sydney.

After meeting Hitler following the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain emerged from his British Airways flight from Munich, proclaiming "Peace in our time!"

1942

Winston Churchill was the first British PM to fly across the Atlantic when he travelled to meet US President Roosevelt. His BOAC Boeing 314 flying boat flew from Plymouth, via Bermuda and Norfolk, Virginia, then on to Washington DC.

1952

After the death of her father, King George VI, Princess Elizabeth left Kenya instead of continuing her royal tour to Australia. She arrived on a BOAC plane at Heathrow as Queen Elizabeth II.

2005

British PM Tony Blair was aboard a British Airways 777-200 when it set a new record for the world's longest non-stop commercial flight from Brussels to Melbourne – 17,157 kilometres in 18 hours 45 minutes.

2011

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh flew the first non-stop flight from Perth to London aboard a BA 777 after a Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference. Now Qantas flies the 14,498 kilometre non-stop route in about 18 hours and plans a non-stop flight from Sydney to London by 2022.

SEVEN FAMOUS BA UNIFORMS

Daimler Airway was a subsidiary of BSA (Birmingham Small Arms Company, known for its engines and motorcycles). Swallowed by Imperial, and thus BA, it employed the first "cabin boys" to serve passengers.

1967

Until the 1960s, male and female BA flight attendants wore military-style uniforms. That changed when the first made-to-measure uniforms for the 1500 female "stewardesses" employed by British European Airways were designed by Sir Hardy Amies, the Queen's couturier.

Meanwhile, BOAC introduced paper "mini-dresses" for stewardesses flying to the West Indies. Meant to be discarded after each flight, legend has it sometimes they didn't last that long, with "high-spirited male passengers tempted to take a cigarette lighter to see what would happen".

To celebrate delivery of its first Boeing 747s, BOAC awarded Clive Evans the commission of designing its new female uniform, beating Mary Quant. It chose between Caribbean blue or coral pink for its summer uniform, which was made from Terylene and cotton so it could be washed in a hotel sink and left to drip-dry overnight.

1992

Roland Klein's distinctive red, white and blue vertical stripes had been considered a great success, but Paul Costelloe produced what many regard as the signature BA outfit: a classically tailored single-breasted suit with a silky print blouse or dress and a distinctive upturned boater.

2004

Julien MacDonald, whose outfits had been worn by Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue and many other celebrities, was tasked with designing outfits for 25,000 staff of different body shapes and sizes.

2019

Ozwald Boateng is BA's new designer. His top secret uniforms, now for 32,000 staff, will be unveiled before the "centenary" on August 25 this year.

Once into the computer just after takeoff and the seat belt lights came off, the hacker hacked into the system and put in the infamous "Stunt" computer virus worm, the same one supposedly used by Israeli or US intelligence to prevent the Iranians from loading nuclear reactor fuel into their new their new nuclear power plant at Brusher, Iran on the coast along the straits of Hormuz. There were several spy agencies in on this, including several double-agents.

Some with interests in airport security technologies, some security defense companies (industrial military complex), and some Middle Eastern terrorist leaders who are very angry at the West along with Australians participation with NATO in Afghanistan against the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Yemen, tribal regions of Pakistan, who have recently received more secret funding from Iran. Revenge travelling after corona virus

Thinking of travelling and exploring Malaysia? Wanting to see the ancient Batu Caves, the famous Twin Towers, to relax with your friends and family on Penang beaches, enjoy snorkeling and the famous sunsets, or visiting the strawberries farms with your love ones at Cameron Highlands. But indeed arises several questions in your mind, Is it safe to go? Are hotels obeying the post corona virus guidelines? Do we take public transport or need to rent a car? It’s quite obvious that everyone is thinking about these questions and aware of the corona virus and how deadly this virus is.

Situation in Malaysia

To begin with, Malaysians have started taking the Revenge from corona virus. Revenge? How is this possible? The answer is Yes .Being locked down for months, it seems to be justified. Revenge spending is a behaviour that occurs every once in a while due to various reasons that may frustrate society as a whole. At present, we see spending happening in Malaysia due to the coronavirus. After a 2 month gruelling lockdown, Malaysians are wanting to get out and about again. Online shopping has picked tremendously, traveling within Malaysia is in a rise, and as well hotels are now becoming fully booked.

One of the reason that Malaysia is quickly coming back to its feet, is due to their spending power. Based on a study shown by Wealth insight, Malaysia has more than 26,000 high net worth individuals (HNWIs) or millionaires. It stated that the wealth of HNWIs stood at RM527 billion (US$151 billion). Kuala Lumpur had the most number of HNWIs at 13,800 last year, more than Abu Dhabi (12,500), Cape Town (8,753) and Birmingham (8,736).

As we see the number of millionaires grow in Malaysia, it explains why the Malaysian economy will eventually come back to its norm. It also clearly show that the travel and car rental industry within Malaysian is recovering faster than expected.

Sectors Most Likely To Benefit from Revenge Spending

As a whole, health, safety and cleanliness will be at the forefront of consumers behavioral change. People avoid the Crowded places such as malls, cinemas, markets and sporting events. Consumers will be more used to 'virtual routines' and opt for online services, such as online shopping and streaming movies, events and sports, as much as possible.

Travel Situation

As the pandemic situation settles down, the mindset of every individual has changed for travel and tourism. It has not only changed the travel conduct but also has a great impact on the travel industry. The hopes that this world crisis will soon be over is on a high. Certain countries have allowed domestic flights and have eased their restrictions for interstate travel. People are now starting to come back to their offices (some are working in other states) as if they have jobs in different parts of the country. Citizens are struck with the fear of losing it as employers are also facing a huge crisis. New projects have been halted and ongoing tenders are also on a setback. Many businesses are on the verge on going under as cash flow is a serious issue in this point in time.

As per the situation of the airports, passengers are allowed to carry limited baggage. Airport authorities are taking extra care and trying to do their duties by maintaining social distancing. None of the airlines is providing food as they want to lower the risk of the virus. Some of the countries have taken drastic steps to cut the travel to avoid the risk. Animals travel and trade restrictions are not recommended. Pregnant and immunocompromised employees are more prone to the disease. Proper mask, gloves are worn by the authorities and by the travelers. Even the baggage is properly sanitized and the authorities recommend to carry as much less as you can.Though, operators are happy to see the customers travelling. They are also trying their level best to avoid crowds and long queue.

Technology has played a vital role in this situation, now facial recognition, e-passport gates are more active. Thermal scanning is going all over no matter where you go. Travelers are confidently leaving their houses in the hope that they will be given the proper service. Even the passengers don’t mind paying a little bit extra fee as far as their own security is concerned. Online education service providers will also see a surge in demand for their services as more consumers are learning and discovering that e-learning can be just as effective as physical training.

Hotels

Hotels, Oyo rooms, motels, home stays are back into the business and trying their level best to provide services. Management is trying to provide a sanitized environment. Extra instructions are given to the staff for the customer’s security. When dining out, consumers will adopt healthy eating habits and pay more attention to the cleanliness of restaurants. Mask and sanitizers are a part of amenity sets. People like to order the food in the room rather going to the packed buffet halls. As the restrictions have rolled back, the economy seems to be lifted up a bit. Hotels are offering many deals to keep in touch with their old customers and gain the attention for new for example the night offers, the package for 3 in the price of 2, discounts on spa treatment and so on.

According to the World Economic Report, this coronavirus recession is the world’s greatest recession. This is also called THE GREAT SHUTDOWN or THE GREAT LOCKDOWN. Malaysia as per the centre of attraction for tourist all over the world was expecting millions of guests. This is the worst crisis the Malaysian tourism has ever faced. If in figures we say expected 30 million of tourist with the amount of $21.5 billion.

The main tourist is from China, Singapore and Indonesia. Not only this but the situation was similar dramatic in the catering industry too. Every sector has reduced its prices to save the country and their own businesses.

People Experience

Although people were ban to stay home but now they are making plans to visit inside there our country. They started exploring their own region and start embracing life and freedom again. Many plans which were cancelled to celebrate their specials days/month are now being celebrated in their own ways in the semi-freedom state. Car rental companies, Hotels and Tourism Industry start giving the discounts and well as gives some special add-ons on their selected package. Every industry whether it is the food industry, hotels or the local car companies tries to give the special touch to every customer.

Rapid Recovery

 Now the biggest challenge is the rebuild the trust on the tourist. Airlines, car rental companies, Hotels and other cooperates have come together to make a join package for the customers and make their visit and stay comfortable.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines Launches Flights to Manchester, England

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has resumed flights to Manchester, England. Bangladesh’s national airline will operate the thrice weekly flights with Boeing 787-9 aircraft configured with 24 seats in business class and 247 in economy class. Biman will operate direct flights between Dhaka and Manchester, while the return leg will fly via Sylhet. The flight time is about 10 hours. The airline suspended its previous Manchester service in September 2012 due to insufficient aircraft.

Andrew Cowan, CEO of Manchester Airport, said, “There is no better way to mark the start of a new year than with the launch of an exciting new long-haul route from Manchester Airport like this one. We know there is a significant Bangladeshi community across our catchment area and this Biman Bangladesh service will be hugely popular with friends, family and business contacts travelling in both directions.” There are up to 300,000 people of Bangladeshi origin in northern parts of the UK, from Birmingham to Scotland, for whom this service will be their closest direct route to Bangladesh. Biman’s Regional Manager, Debabrota Mallick, said, “A direct flight from Manchester to Sylhet, and Manchester to Dhaka has been on our radar for quite some time. Airbus A380: A love letter to the double-decker plane destined for oblivion

No present-day plane can compete with the Airbus A380 for passenger passion. We adore the double-decker. 

For another airliner that has aroused anything like the same adulation, you must reach back to Concorde. Which, I contend, demonstrates that the more that passengers love an aircraft, the less it appeals to airline accountants – and, by extension, the people who order planes.

I have been covering the  “SuperJumbo” since it was a drawing-board project called the A3XX. As the design took shape, the marketing team chose to award it the same designation as the Torquay bypass.

The first A380 I saw (not counting the trunk road that loops west under Torbay) was, rather appropriately, flying over the super-jumbo-sized municipal swimming pool in Toulouse. I floated, mesmerised, as the giant aircraft floated overhead on an early test flight from the nearby Airbus factory. Ever since I have been looking optimistically skywards to see if I can spot the implausible bulk of the four-engined monster.

More even than the Boeing 747, there is an enduring sense of wonder that such a vast machine can get off the ground, let alone carry 500 people from one side of the world to the other – safely and comfortably. Concorde once had similar cachet.

The A380 is even better to fly in than it is to look at, at least relative to economy class on other aircraft. When I conducted a Twitter poll for the favourite aircraft for an overnight 10-hour flight in economy, the SuperJumbo was rated way ahead of the competition – even against its much more modern sibling, the A350, and the Boeing 787 “Dreamliner”.

Having flown on a range of A380s, the difference is clear. British Airways and Singapore Airlines have an economy section at the back of the upper deck, configured eight-abreast and bestowed with an air of quiet calm – feeling rather like premium economy but without the premium. Even on the main deck, there is a generous sense of space.

While the A380’s main deck cabin is wide enough for 11 seats abreast, no airline has installed more than 10 across. Contrast that with the long-haul workhorse, the Boeing 777 – which began in a nine-abreast configuration but now has a default of 10 across.

The worst long-haul flight I have experienced was on an Air France 777 into which no fewer than 468 passengers had been crammed – just one seat fewer than the capacity British Airways offers on its A380.

No wonder the dull, cramped Boeing twin-jet has outsold the spacious SuperJumbo by six to one: the economics are far better. Passengers prefer the A380, but the premium we are prepared to pay collectively is not enough to support its ownership and running costs.

Next weekend, I am flying via the Gulf  to India. Emirates, offering A380 comfort via Dubai, was priced £80 higher than Gulf Air via Bahrain. I bought the latter.

The A380 would be even more of a financial basket case were it not for the bold decision by Emirates to buy up half the world’s supply of SuperJumbo jets. Moving people 500 or 600 at a time through Dubai works for a surprisingly wide range of routes (when the A380 first took to the skies, I bet the bosses of Birmingham and Glasgow airports weren’t expecting to welcome daily arrivals and departures).

But in downsizing its plane order to smaller single-deck Airbuses, Emirates is drawing attention to the Achilles heel of the A380: there are simply not enough routes where so many empty seats can reliably be filled.

Airbus was betting that the A380 would come good. As hub airports became ever more congested, the theory went, orders would pick up. But I imagine the firm is glad that it can stop running a loss-making production line within a couple of years.

If you have not yet enjoyed flying aboard the plane, don’t fret. “Peak A380” will occur with the final delivery in 2021. After that the numbers will start to dwindle, but Emirates will still be filling the planes a decade later. And who knows: as the SuperJumbo acquires some rarity value, perhaps we will be willing to pay more to keep the amazing Airbus aloft for many more years.
