Salt Lake City is Utah's capital city and largest, with approximately 200,000 residents. (The Salt Lake Metro Area has more than a million). It is situated in the Salt Lake Valley. This city serves as the heart of the Wasatch front urban corridor. It is situated between the Wasatch Mountains to the East, which are considered to be part of the Western Rocky Mountains and the Oquirrh Mountains. The Great Salt Lake is located northwest of the city.
Salt Lake City is well-known for its role as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' central hub, although less than half of the city residents are members. The city is well-known for being a hub of outdoor recreation, with many nearby ski resorts which were highlighted by the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Places to visit in slc
Salt Lake City, Utah's capital, is a young, dynamic city. The city has many natural, historic, religious, and cultural attractions. Nearby skiing and mountain-based adventure opportunities make it a great place to live. Salt Lake City (Latter Day Saints) has been a major religious center for the Mormons for many years. Many of the city's top attractions focus on this aspect. But hosting the Olympic Winter Games brought a new energy to the city and made it a destination for international visitors. There are many things to do in Salt Lake City, including shopping and great dining.
  1.     Mormon Tabernacle
The tabernacle is an oval-shaped building that sits on 44 sandstone posts. The tabernacle's elegant interior is known for its excellent acoustics. It can seat over 6,500 people. The day includes a free tour and an example of the acoustics. If you are fortunate, you might be able attend a recital or performance for free.
2.     This is the Place Heritage Park
Brigham Young exclaimed, "This place!" after seeing the valley of his visions from Emigration Canyon, following the Mormons' 1,300-mile trek. This park is a great place for family outings and it's only 15 minutes from Salt Lake City.
 3.     Joseph Smith Memorial Building
The Joseph Smith Memorial Building is a major building in Temple Square. Constructed as the Hotel Utah in 1911, it was later renamed after the first president the Mormon Church.
  4.     Liberty Park
Liberty Park is Salt Lake City’s largest public park. It covers over 80 acres. There are many recreational activities available. This green space is a peaceful retreat for nature with mature trees. Residents often visit this park in summer to enjoy a picnic or relaxation under the shaded canopy of leaves.
  5.     Hogle Zoo
Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo offers a family-friendly option. It's located in the eastern suburbs of Salt Lake City and is easy to access from downtown. It is home to over 800 animals, spread over 42 acres.

Oh, yes please.
My last flight landed at Dulles International on March 3. First class from LAX. And that was a great nine-day trip too. All of it. And the best part was the three trips remaining in the queue through April 2020: SLC, San Diego, and Denver. None of those happened, obviously.
I miss travel. Airports. Flights. Uber convos. Rental cars. Hotels. Restaurants. Food trucks. Wandering. Strangers. Flight attendants. Friends. And, airplane food. Traveling with kiddo. Shopping. Dispensaries. All of it.
I miss road trips too. I put a quick 60k on my car in under three years. It’s been as far north as Newburyport, MA; as far south as Atlanta (twice), and as far west as Ann Arbor. And all over everywhere in between lots of times.
I’ve stayed a lot of nights in hotels. I have routines. I like knowing the staff but not in a chit-chatty way. I miss keeping my room immaculate. I love being choosy at the rental car lots. I may not be looking for anything in particular but I know what I seek when I find it. I rarely take the one reserved for me. They know me at LAX. I miss Postcards From Here.
I miss being mysterious. Ghosting. Reappearing. Surprising. Doing my own thing even with colleagues abound. I miss making tracks late into the night in hotel rooms, bars, or courtyards. I miss getting stupid and impressing myself with clever saves. I miss running into the same group of people and being the smartest or the funniest or the most solid or most dependable or most efficient or most OCD person in the building. I miss being the least affected.
This is the longest I’ve been home in decades.

All the firearms and crazy shit the TSA confiscated last year! *Video*
Rated Red recently put out a video showing by the numbers how the TSA did in 2017 and its pretty good but if you go to the TSA website you can see in further detail some of the crazy shit people try to take on airplanes! Check out the videos below!
TSA.GOV Writes
771.5 million (771,556,886) passengers traveled securely through 440 federalized airports in 2017. That’s over 2 million travelers a day!
A record setting 3,957, firearms were discovered in carry-on bags at checkpoints across the country, averaging 76.1 firearms per week. That’s an average of 10.8 firearms per day.
3,324 (84 percent) of the total firearms discovered were loaded.
1,378 (34.8 percent) of the total firearms discovered had a round chambered.
The most firearms discovered in one-month – a whopping 31 – were discovered in August at the Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL).
Firearms were intercepted at a total of 239 airports.
There was a 16.7 percent (556 more) increase in firearm discoveries from 2016’s totalof 3,391.
Top 10 Airports For Firearm Discoveries In 2017:
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL): 245 (222 Loaded)
Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW): 211 (165 Loaded)
George Bush Intercontinental Airport – Houston (IAH): 142 (124 Loaded)
Denver International (DEN): 118 (102 Loaded)
Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX): 115 (109 Loaded)
Tampa International (TPA): 97 (90 Loaded)
Orlando International Airport (MCO): 94 (82 Loaded)
Dallas Love Field (DAL): 93 (81 Loaded)
Nashville International (BNA): 89 (71 Loaded)
Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (SEA): 75 (60 Loaded)
In addition to firearms discovered last year, there were many hazardous items passengers attempted to travel with. Pictured above are just a sampling of some of the items discovered in 2017.
Clockwise from the top left of the photo:
A checked bag containing an ammunition box with three live ground burst simulators, two live M83 smoke grenades, and one inert practice grenade was discovered at the Palm Springs International Airport (PSP).
A live flashbang grenade was discovered in a carry-on bag at the San Diego International Airport (SAN).
A live smoke grenade was discovered in a carry-on bag at the Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU). Not only do smoke grenades deploy a thick blanket of smoke, they also burn extremely hot and are considered hazmat.
A one-pound bottle of gun powder was discovered in a checked bag at the Ketchikan International Airport (KTN). Gun powder is never permitted on an aircraft..
Five one-pound bottles of gun powder were discovered in a checked bag at the Boise Airport (BOI).
A ten-ounce container of gun powder was discovered in a checked bag at the Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). While properly packed ammunition is allowed in checked bags, gun powder is strictly prohibited altogether.
Officers also find inert items that appear very realistic. The problem with these types of items is that when they’re being viewed on the X-ray monitor, we don’t know if they’re real, toys, or replicas until TSA explosives experts are called upon. Inert items can lead to closed terminals and checkpoints, which often result in costly canceled or delayed flights.
Clockwise from the top left of the photo:
An inert explosives device was discovered in the carry-on bag of a Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) traveler. The traveler stated it was a training aid.
A realistic replica suicide vest and claymore mine were discovered in a traveler’s checked bag at the El Paso International Airport (ELP). The traveler was an explosives ordnance disposal contractor and the items were used as training aids. Instructors needing to travel with inert explosives training aids should plan ahead and find another way to transport their training aids.
Inert prototype projectile munitions for energetic drilling were discovered in a checked bag at the Spokane International Airport (GEG).
Inert ordnance discovered in a checked bag at the Tampa International Airport (TPA).
An inert M107 Howitzer projectile was discovered in a checked bag at the San Jose International Airport (SJC).
An inert land mine utilized for military training was discovered in a traveler’s checked bag at the La Crosse Municipal Airport (LSE).
Inert blocks of explosives were detected in a traveler’s carry-on bag at the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP). This wasn’t a test. It was a military instructor who stated that he forgot they were in his bag.
Travelers continue to pack inert hand grenades in their carry-on and checked bags. As mentioned above, when being viewed on the X-ray monitor, we don’t know if these are real or inert until TSA explosives experts are called upon. Inert grenades can lead to closed terminals and checkpoints, which often result in costly canceled or delayed flights.
A total of 198 prohibited items were deliberately hidden in attempts to sneak them through security in 2017. This is known as “artful concealment” and can lead to fines, arrests, and missed flights.
From left to right:
A comb dagger was discovered in a carry-on bag at the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ).
A knife was found concealed inside a stick of deodorant in a carry-on bag at the Bradley International Airport (BDL).
A stun gun disguised as a tube of lipstick was discovered in a carry-on bag at the Baltimore–Washington International Airport (BWI).
A sword cane was discovered in a traveler’s accessible property at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).
A brush dagger was discovered in a carry-on bag at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).
A stun cane was discovered in a traveler’s accessible property at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).
A lipstick knife was discovered in a carry-on bag at the Tulsa International Airport (TUL).
Our officers discover thousands upon thousands of sharp items in carry-on bags every year. These are just a few of the sharp items discovered last year in carry-on bags.

The year also provided the need for travelers to surrender a few odd items. In case you missed it, be sure to check out our video rundown of TSA’s Top 10 Most Unusual Finds of 2017!

Last week @reidmccallum and I made a quick trip to Florida and Alabama! We took our chances and flew standby and it turned into quite an adventure. We started the vacation by showing up for a red eye flight at 11pm on Friday night... didn’t get on that flight so we went home and slept for 3 hours before getting up again at 4:30 to try to get on a 6am flight. Long story short, we didn’t get on a flight from SLC to Atlanta until mid-day Saturday. Once we got to Atlanta, after buying me a ticket to FL thinking it was the only way we could both get there, we realized that Reid actually couldn’t get on a flight the same day. So after contemplating just going home, at 9 PM we made a last minute decision to DRIVE to Florida. And FIVE hours later, at 2AM, we drove into the Grayton Beach area. It was chaos and exhausting, but once we got there, so relaxing and fun. We sat on the beach, went for a great run / walk on the beach and ate lots of AMAZING seafood. I’d do it again in a second, and I’m already planning our next adventure! #beach #graytonbeach #eatalltheseafood #beachfront #graytonbeachfl #beachtime #seafoodlove #drawingonthebeach #handlettering #drawing #lettering #utahdesigner #utahhandlettering #womenofillustration #illustration #ladieswhopaint #handdrawntype #typography #typespire #goodtype #typegang #calligritype #typematters #handletteredabcs #handtype #artoftype #illustration #thedailytype #sketchbook #sketchbookartist (at Grayton Beach, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvuzLcOHwMT/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=z46b7lk8pezz

I'm NOT Going To Greece :( (PS EasyJet SUCKS!!!)
Welp thanks to Bozo Boris Johnson (and, to be fair, the coronavirus) I am not going to Greece. Our plan had been to meet Benji & Dallis in Northern Ireland, then on to London from which we would fly home (on a Virgin Atlantic A350!!!). But, it is not appearing the UK will be allowing US travelers anytime soon, so Benji & Dallis bumped their trip forward by two weeks. With all our moving parts, that added thousands of dollars to our trip (600 euros to the price of the hotel in Greece alone). I'm heartbroken - the NI meetup was pretty much a once in a lifetime confluence of events and now it'll probably never happen.
So, I'm now in the process of now trying to unravel it all. The biggest thorn has been the goddamn EasyJet flight from Chania to Belfast. We have a layover at London Gatwick, and it turns out EasyJet does not do true thru flights, so we actually have two reservations and would have had to get our bags, recheck them to Belfast, and go back through security at Gatwick. So that was enough of a pain until I discovered EJ has NO number for US callers! So in order to call & find out my options I would have to pay international calling fees (around $3 per minute!!!).
We had a good experience flying EasyJet from Edinburgh to Paris Orly in 2019 but now I have to say if you're in the US I would avoid them. I tried filling out their online form and explained I was unable to call due to the expense (especially as they quote long on-hold times). What did I get in response? A fucking form e-mail that stated if none of my questions were answered to....call their customer service. So obviously no one bothers to actually read these. Some bot checks them for keywords an generates an auto-response. GRRRRR!
So yesterday, I ponied up $15 per month (which I can hopefully cancel) for an international calling plan from AT&T and called them. The answer? Right now I can change my flight, and that's it. No refunds, no vouchers, nothing. Meanwhile every airline on the planet (it seems, and it seems like I've booked flights on the majority of them the last 6 months) is being super flexible due to COVID. But not EasyJet. Despite the "Protection Promise" they tout on their website, they will not actually do shit for you if your destination is still on lockdown and requiring a quarantine. So I may be out around $800 which is sickening. Meanwhile it took about 30 seconds on British Airways' website to find, request, and receive a voucher for our flight from Belfast to London City that is good until 2023!!
Our plan had been to fly from Tulsa to JFK on July 3 and stay overnight at the groovy TWA Hotel in the old TWA terminal and fly to Athens the next day. We are still going to NYC and staying at the TWA Hotel, but because we are ultra AvGeeks, we are hopping up bright and early the next morning and taking American Airlines Flight 1 to LAX. That's right....we're flying halfway across the country one day, then all the way back across the country the next. The plane is American's A321-T that is a unique plane type that they only fly on a couple of transcontinental routes (that's what the T in A321-T stands for). It has 3 classes of service, First, Business, Main which is very rare for a plane on a domestic route. We are in "Business" which has lie flat seats (the plane leaves at 8am and it's a 6 hour flight - I may need a nap). You can check out the layout of this unique plane on SeatGuru if you're into that sort of thing: https://seatguru.com/airlines/American_Airlines/American_Airlines_Airbus_A321_new.php?flightno=1&date=
We are also scheduled on an A330 from Atlanta to JFK on Delta, which is shocking! This is a twin aisle wide-body jet that you rarely will find on domestic routes. This is the same plane on which we were supposed to fly from JFK to Athens. The bad news is we leave Tulsa at 6am. The TWA hotel pool (an infinity pool which overlooks the runways at JFK!!!) requires paid reservations and you can only get a reservation on the day of your arrival so we need to get into JFK early. So basically it's like Caddy Day at the pool, but I imagine they had to do this to keep the pool from being overrun. I am actually just fine with these restrictive rules if they cut down on the amount of tools hanging about at the pool. Our room also overlooks the runways, so it should be AvGeek heaven.
So, we will be knocking off several AvGeek bucket list items: TWA Hotel, AA Flight 1, A321-T, and A350 planes that we have never flown on, and that you will not often find on domestic routes. So I'm feeling a little less sick about the other trip being cancelled (although not about the prospect of losing all that money to EasyJet). Although if BoJo soon announces the UK will open to US travelers from July 1, meaning our entire trips would have still been possible I will feel sick all over again.
And, we still have our Minneapolis Chicago trip coming up in September. And Wrigley just announced they are going back to 100% capacity! Mind you, it's not that I *like* crowds of peasants, but tickets at Wrigley are expensive enough without limited capacity. It'll be nice to get back into the Friendly Confines.
In other news, Ginny & Lisa (and maybe the El Patrons) and I are headed to Boise later in September to see oSu take on the Broncos on the blue turf!!! We are flying Southwest there and Delta back, with a layover in SLC which means I can finally check out the huge, swank new Sky Club there! Lisa and Felipe will have prime plane spotting on the outdoor skydeck. I love a good airport lounge! It's good to be (hopefully) travelling again....even if it's just in the lower 48!

15 Reasons Salt Lake City Is a Great Place to Live
Are you ready for a change and itching to pack up and move? Salt Lake City, Utah is undoubtedly a great place for outdoor lovers, sportsmen, families, singles, tech moguls among others.
Below are some of the reasons you should consider moving to this wonderful city.
1. Jobs are Easy to Find
When driving around Salt Lake City, you’ll see many office buildings come up. In fact, a research study shows there’re currently over 20,000 jobs on offer. The Lehi area, which is just half an hour south of downtown Salt Lake, has recently transformed to become a haven for technology companies.
According to research, the current unemployment rate stands at a mere 2.9%. Furthermore, its economy has over the last 2 years grown to become the second highest in America.
2. Salt Lake City Views are Amazing
You’ll get awesome views from anywhere in the Salt Lake City. The view of the sun rising over the Wasatch mountain range in the East and setting over the Oquirrh mountain and the Greta Salt Lake to the West is truly breathtaking.
In fact, it is for this reason that properties in areas such as Cottonwood Heights, Olympus Cove, Holladay, Sandy, and Draper are a bit more costly.
3. Residents are very Friendly
Life becomes very comfortable when the majority of people you run into everyday are happy, courteous, and friendly. To better illustrate this, results from research showed that Salt Lake City ranks second in this regard.
4. Salt Lake City Traffic is by No Means Utopian
The traffic situation is pretty mild especially when compared to Atlanta, San Francisco, Dallas, and Los Angeles.
5. There are Great Restaurants
No matter which part of the town you want to live in, you’ll find a slew of great restaurants. Eating joints range from formal sit-down dining options to local burger joints.
In the recent past, Salt Lake City restaurants have received quite a bit of attention from the Travel Channel and the Food Network for their delicious meals. Some of the restaurants to check out while in Salt Lake City include;
Tin Roof Grill
Penny Ann’s Cafe
Red Iguana
Porcupine Pub and Grille
Market Street Grill
Root’s Cafe
6. It’s very Affordable to Live in Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City homes are some of the nation’s most affordable. For instance, you can still find a home going for sale for under $200,000. Regardless of the area you’re searching for, you’ll quickly find that homes are reasonably priced.
Getting a chance to live in the shadows of the picturesque mountains without having to pay such a hefty premium is certainly an added bonus. Nonetheless, this is fast changing given the rapid growth being experienced.
7. The Weather Is Great
It is exciting and never gets boring. Only a handful of other cities can actually compare.
Although the low humidity may be a bit hard on the skin and hair, it helps keep the summer temperatures from feeling too hot and winter temperatures from feeling too cold.
8. The Nightlife Is Spectacular
Recently, many new clubs, bars, and concert avenues have sprung up. Every time the sun goes down, there’s always something going on in Salt Lake City.
9. Crime Rate Is Exponentially Low
Moving to Salt Lake City is a wise move if you want a safe place to raise your family.
It is known for its friendly people, beautiful mountains, and wide, clean downtown streets. Making it an ideal tourist destination as well as a great place to call home.
According to crime stats, the Salt Lake’s east side and southwest part are quite safe.

11. Traveling to/from is Easy
It’s a pain to live away from a major airport especially if you travel quite often. The Salt Lake City International Airport makes it super easy to travel to and from.
The Salt Lake City airport is Delta Airlines Largest Hub in the West. It will not only make your traveling to other destinations easy but it will also make the cost of your flights a bit less compared to if you lived in a city without an international airport.
The government is in the process of upgrading the SLC airport into a modern, state-of-the-art airport.
12. Mountains are Close by
Salt Lake City is blessed to have so many stunning mountains that are so close and easy to get to. You’re guaranteed great mountain views from pretty much anywhere in the valley, from the Wasatch mountains on the east to the Oquirrh mountains to the west. It only takes about a half an hour drive when you want to escape the city or suburban life.
Better yet, you’ll probably need to drive 10-15 minutes until you’re in the mountains if you live on the east side of the Salt Lake [Sandy, Cottonwood Heights, Olympus Cove, and Holladay].
13. Natural Playground
Salt Lake City’s national parks provide a vast playground for adventure sports, hiking, mountain biking and, of course, skiing and snowshoeing. Moreover, the arid desert and mountains provide a spectacular setting for bird-watching.
Thanks to the Winter Olympics held in 2002, Salt Lake City has a state-of-the-art running track and skating rink at the Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns and Olympic Park in Park City.
14. Best Snow
Residents love skiing in the snow. Some even say Salt Lake City’s snow has the perfect moisture and density.
To better illustrate the pride Salt Lake City takes in its skiing and snow, within an hour’s drive, there’re a whopping nine resorts for the city of nearly 200,000.
During the summer, a number of the resorts offer hiking, wall climbing, mountain biking, fishing and rafting trips.
  15. Quality Education
For post-secondary education, university of Utah and Brigham Young University lead the way, followed by Western Governors University.
According to Wallet hub, Salt Lake City is ranked the 32nd most educated city in America.

Record Number of Passengers Screened and Guns Confiscated in 2016 According to TSA
Today on its blog, the TSA released stats for the full year of 2016, including how many people were screened, how many bags were screened, the number of firearms discovered and more. All in all, 2016 was a very busy year for travel — the TSA screened more than 738 million passengers in total, which is about 43 million more passengers than in 2015. A whopping 466 million checked bags passed through TSA screening equipment — safe to say the airlines made quite a bit of money from those checked bag fees last year.
Along with the increase in total passengers who traveled, there was a dramatic jump in the number of firearms discovered at checkpoints around the nation. In total, 3,391 guns were found in carry-on bags, which represents a 28% increase over last year’s firearm discoveries. 83% of the guns discovered were loaded — certainly an unnerving statistic, but thankfully the TSA remained vigilant and discovered these weapons before they were allowed anywhere near the inside of an airplane.
Firearms were discovered at a total of 238 airports across the country, with Atlanta (ATL), Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Phoenix (PHX), Denver (DEN), Orlando (MCO), Nashville (BNA), Tampa (TPA), Austin (AUS) and Salt Lake City (SLC) making up the top 10 airports in terms of number of guns discovered.
Of course it’t not just guns that get discovered and confiscated — the TSA comes across many peculiar items, such as grenades, sword canes, comb knives, machetes, saws and axes. It’s alarming to see just how many dangerous weapons are confiscated, but we’re grateful that the agency’s checkpoint system is effective in preventing these items from boarding planes with passengers.
