low budget podcast tools
I want to talk a little bit about the tools I use to make (and promote) Sidequesting! This show is a low-budget, primarily one-person production. All the money I use to make the show comes out of my pocket, so I’m trying to keep it as inexpensive as I can. Here’s some of the things I use, in case anyone is looking for advice for their own shows (or is just curious).
Google Docs
You’ve probably heard of this one. I use it to write my scripts! It’s free (up to 17 GB), and I like having an online backup of everything I write. When it comes time to send the script to actors, I just give them the google doc link.
Audacity
Audacity is a free audio recording and editing program. I use it to record my lines and edit the episodes together. It’s a simple, easy-to learn program. It lacks many of the “fancy” features of other editing programs, but I use some of the effects (noise reduction, amplify, fade out) every episode.
Pinecast
Once you’ve got an episode, you need to host it somewhere. Right now, I’m using Pinecast’s free plan, which allows me to upload 10 episodes for free. I’ll be switching to the $5 a month plan on episode 10 to keep the show going. Pinecast has additional plans that give other things (such as advanced analytics), but this plan is great for me.
A quick note - be wary of free hosting services. Check the terms and conditions closely. Who owns the work you upload? Will the service be running ads on your show? Maybe not, but definitely check.
Carrd
Your podcast should have a website! It should be a place with all the information on your show - episodes, cast and crew, social media handles, transcripts, press kit... It’s good for everyone involved in your show, and the show itself. I use carrd.co for my website. With a free account, you can create 3 one-page websites (the url will end in .carrd.co for each of them). There are a bunch of templates you can customize to create something that looks really nice. Some other low-cost options I’ve seen used are wix, wordpress, and tumblr.
Canva
I have a Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr for my podcast, and I wanted to have some visual posts to promote episode releases with. I use canva to make a mood board and a graphic for each episode. I post the mood board a week before as a sort of “sneak peek” and I post the graphic when the episode comes out. These are especially great for Instagram (where you need an image to post). Canva has paid pro plans, but you get a lot with the free version.
A quick note - make sure you’re using royalty free images to promote your podcast! Unsplash and FlickrCommons are good places to start, and canva also has some images available for use.
Headliner
Speaking of social media, sometimes you want to share clips of your show! On headliner, you can upload segments and add an background image to create a video you can download and share. You can also add a waveform, captions, and a “time-elapsed” bar. You can make 10 videos a month for free! That’s plenty for me.
Trello
And lastly, I use trello to organize everything. Nothing sticks in my memory, so I’ve got to write it all down. I like the system of columns and cards that trello uses, because it’s really flexible. I have columns for different stages of the production process and cards for each episode that I move from column to column as things get done.
And that’s that! There’s definitely other free software/website out there, but this is what I use! Thanks for reading.
