The film, which features “The Hobbit” star Martin Freeman opposite Molly Belle Wright (“Deep Water”) as the eponymous detective Flavia, has started principal photography, with a first look image showing the duo alongside Toby Jones (“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) in a dusty library. It is due to wrap in November.
Oooh, news! Also, look at Martin, he looks great!

I kinda wanted to touch on something I mentioned in tags, that a lot of awful aspects/tropes of how "strong/badass" women can be done well. It is hard to do it well, but it is possible. Very often it's the way these aspects are handled and/or the combination of all of them that make the character absolutely awful/insufferable. Here are some books with these things that I think are actually well written and genuinely good. There will be a range of genres and target audiences (I am only going to list the titles, and obviously the books can't be boiled down to one aspect so don't mistake it for "This is the MAIN aspect of the book/character" Also multiple could apply to these but I'm just listing them as I think of them and will only mention a book once.
Constant Quipping: Little Thieves or The Monstrous Regiment
Too perfect/Over-Competent: Graceling, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
"I grew up around 7 Brothers": Magyk (Quite Literally lol she has exactly 7 brothers)
Wearing Heels/Stuff that would be uncomfortable to fight in: Dragon Slippers or Soulless
"Showing Emotion Makes you weak": The Hunger Games, The Screaming Staircase, Vespertine, A Master of Djinn
The Whole Femme Fatale Thing: Killers of a Certain Age, Etiquette and Espionage, Cocaine Blues
There are a lot more but I would like to keep this pretty short.

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks....
I don't mind at all! You've opened up quite a can of worms, my friend.
Katara (Avatar: The Last Airbender) I love Katara because she's a wonderfully complex character. She's kind and compassionate but she's also stubborn and has quite a temper. She gets pushed into being a mother figure, first for her brother and then for an entire crew of kids. I relate to her frustration with being forced to take that on way too young.
Carmen Sandiego (Carmen Sandiego 2019) Another beautifully rounded character. I love her poise and confidence, and also that we get to see her vulnerable side. I really love her journey in understanding that the way she was raised, everything she was taught wasn't what she thought it was. I relate super hard to her being raised to do something and deciding that no, actually, she didn't want to do what her parental figures decided she ought to do. Also the one heist set to the Four Swans dance totally confirmed my thoughts that ballet training makes a great thief.
Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender) Oh where do I even start? He's a fantastic depiction of someone who endured terrible child abuse, and even years after leaving the situation it still affects him and his self-image. His journey of unlearning his father's abuse and indoctrination gets me every time. He's a compassionate person by nature, but was taught that he had to be cruel and angry to be taken seriously, and was always considered second best. I guess I have a soft spot for self-deprecating characters with loads of trauma 😂
Agent Twilight a.k.a Loid Forger (SPY X FAMILY) A highly skilled superspy who's also a chronic overthinker. Beneath the whole "for the mission" excuse, he is a genuinely kind character who has been through hell and back. And as for why I love him? Well, see my point above 😂
Yor Briar Forger a.k.a Thorn Princess (Spy x Family) Another girl pushed into being a parental figure much too young. I love her so much and my heart just aches at the way she sacrificed her childhood so that her brother would have one, and also at how she doesn't know much outside of what she was trained to do.
Suwa Rei (Buddy Daddies) Another assassin trained from a young age, and with a family life that severely traumatized him. I'm starting to notice a pattern in my favorite characters 😭
Flavia de Luce (The Flavia de Luce series by Allan Bradshaw) A precocious chemist and detective with a habit of sticking her nose where it doesn't belong. I love getting to see girls with a curious and analytical mindset in fiction, and also more girls in STEM, whether fictional or real-life.
Penelope Lumley (The Incorrigible Children series by Maryrose Wood) A down-to-earth and level-headed girl who finds herself in charge of three rambunctious children and in the midst of several mysteries. She's kind and firm with a tendency towards optimism that's very refreshing.
Hercule Poirot (from the books by Agatha Christie) A gentleman and a detective who isn't a misogynistic asshole. What's not to love?
Serafina (The Serafina series by Robert Beatty) A fierce and stubborn girl who takes it upon herself to protect those she considers family. She's also a catamount, a shapeshifter who can turn into a mountain lion. I adore her fierceness and dedication, as well as her ability to be stealthy.
Well there you have, it my top 10 favorite characters of all time! They reveal quite a lot about me if you read between the lines 😳

XD the Flavia De Luce Murder Mysteries are not Cozy lol what possessed people to classify it that way? The Village Setting? The MC being a child? If so, that means AGGTM is cozy. Truly Devious also has an Idyllic setting so it must be cozy as well.
A cozy murder mystery is classified as follows:
The Violence is off page or if on page very slight and not graphic at all.
The Sleuth is amateur (there are some exceptions)
The settings is, 99 percent of the time a small and Idyllic community.
The tone is lighthearted and often comedic
The supporting characters (and often the MC) are quirky.
Now. The Flavia de Luce mysteries do fit some of these, but in two important ways it deviates.
Tone: I would not call the Flavia de Luce books lighthearted at all. In my opinion, sorrow is the emotional undercurrent of that series. Her dead mother haunts the narrative throughout every book. At the start of the book, the de Luce's are on the brink of financial ruin and (spoiler) eventually tip over into that ruin. There are lighthearted moments, yes! Hope is intertwined with the sorrow equally, but not in a way to make the tone of the series lighthearted and "quirky." I suppose. Flavia might be considered quirky but she's quirky by the dictionary definition (characterized by peculiar or unexpected traits), not the way people tend to use it (as meaning silly and try-hard)
Violence: Some of it is either off page or not very graphic. However. There are multiple instances of graphic violence in the series. Against Flavia in particular, in no particular order:
Almost Buried Alive
Actually for real pushed of the roof of a gigantic mansion
Witnesses multiple attempted suicides (After these people tried to kill her) and
Almost run over by a car
This is not everything of course but I feel this illustrates my point. The Flavia De Luce Mysteries are much better classified as whodunnits, not cozy mysteries.

Flavia de luce really is the best character i’ve ever read. She is a chemist. She’s an expert in toxicology. She thought a murder mystery happening in her backyard to be peak entertainment. She smuggled out a man’s brain to do homwork on it. She hates-loves her sisters. She’s a freelance detective. She hates hygiene. She’s eleven.
#keeping in mind I only have read the first book#flavia de luce series#Flavia de luce#alan bradley#the sweetness at the bottom of the pie
