"i don’t remember asking for this... but somehow, my life has been rewritten." (Fiver & Alice)
Tumblr media
Fiver's nose twitched as Alice's words lingered in the air, his gaze fell to the floor for a moment, overwhelmed by the flood of sensations clawing at his small frame. Phantom aches that gnawed at him, clouded visions of something he can't quite understand, but knows its severe. He shook physically, as if trying to free himself, but, it didn't do anything for him. Not really. "I...I didn't mean for it to happen like this." his voice was small and fragile, unsure how to explain what he's feeling or seeing without making things worse, if that's even possible. "Rewritten?" he shook his head. "Maybe for you...But.." he looked up at her, eyes wide with worry. "I just wanted to help the sheriff...I didn't want for any of this."

A Blue Check On A Pike Warns Us Not To Give Up The Web
Tumblr media
For an audio podcast version of this article: click here The internet, once a hand full of websites, grew rapidly. In July 2008, Google announced it had an index of 1 trillion URLs. Nearly 15 years later, the internet is larger but, in some ways, still a handful of websites.
I frequently lament Meta and Alphabet swallowing the web. In a post about TikTok, an app with over 1 billion monthly active users, itself representing a large site that makes the internet feel small, I complained forums and directories are gone. A kind of gentrification for the web where the cool message board is now on Facebook and independent blogs are concentrated on a few platforms owned by companies that can act out in petty ways.
In most revenue share models, a large platform, Medium, Twitch, YouTube, and so forth, collect payments from ads or subscriptions and split profit with creators forming a not-technically-an-employee-but-still-kind-of-anemployee-with-extra-steps relationship. A relationship where someone may not work for [platform], but [platform] can suspend income or even remove that non-employee-etcetera's work or access to the platform without warning or reason.
Platform Control
I don't think social media is a utility that must be regulated and forced to act with neutrality. Except for actual utilities, housing, and certain banking and adjacent technologies, that sort of regulation would be undesirable.
I don't want Daily Kos prohibited by law from removing Alex Jones from the comment section. I also don't like the world where people work for platforms creating content units with no substantive legal protection. It's bad when companies can be petty and retributive while controlling much of someone's income and reputation.
Here are a few examples of large sites using an employee with extra steps model, acting outside of stated terms or norms. This is not an endorsement of any parties mentioned. It's just that, in my opinion, these companies acted to be punitive, and these are high-profile examples.
Fiverr and VoiceoverPete
Fiverr ban VoiceoverPete for "attempt[ing] to defraud or scam others," at least that's implied as the reason based on a statement from Fiver to Mel Magazine. The crime of VoiceoverPete was recording a meme format, literally one listed by Know Your Meme. The format is a fictional character who "needs your help," followed by a list of needs and a long, clearly satirical request for a credit card number.
youtube
Patreon and Sargon of Akkad
When Patreon banned user Sargon of Akkad, the creator did not actually violate the platform's terms of service. Patreon's terms of service did not at the time they ban Sargon of Akkad, have a policy for hate speech made off the platform. And from Patreon's own statements, it was an interview, unrelated to and never mentioned on Patreon, that caused the ban hammer.
Ninja and Twitch
When internet personality Ninja left Twitch, the company removed his verification badge and started promoting other streamers on his page. Ninja was, at the time, the largest streamer on Twitch, and the press about his leaving for a deal with Microsoft probably drove over-the-top traffic to his page. But at one point, Ninja's Twitch page ended up having porn streamed onto it because Twitch was promoting other streamers indiscriminately.
Twitch was completely in its right to use Ninja's abandoned feed to promote other Twitch streamers' content. But at the time, their behavior was completely outside of the norm for how Twitch handled offline streamers or streamers who left the platform. It was petty and dumb.
Out of Control
I get something out of Twitter, but not money. Unlike most social networks, Twitter doesn't share revenue with creators. Twitter needs creators, or it dies. If they designed the product to make Steven King happy, it would be better for everyone.
Instead, Twitter's been trying to remove old verification badges and failing, pissing off Steven King, pissing off Mark Cuban, banning an account Tweeting about Musk's jet, making the Twitter logo a Doge, cutting API access for most developers, creating a massive memory leak, labeling NPR as state-affiliated media and many more stupid choices.
Today is my seventh day of Twitter limbo. On March 31st, I became Elon Musk's mother for several hours. But the account was put into a type of quarantine. My username replaced by a dot, my photo removed, I cannot log in. But my profile, with the years-old blue check still stands like a head on a pike warning others that Elon Musk has mommy issues.
We Lost Control
From my Twitter purgatory I realized that for much of the last 14 years Twitter replaced bookmarking, and a swath of general notes. I've long searched my Tweets regularly seeking links I've shared or liked. The typos and voice to text errors don't make me look contemplative, but being able to find a link to an interesting story about AI from a few years ago is nice.
Before Twitter people used to microblog. Clipping to the CMS is a sort of joke in online media circles now, but it's something everyone once did. Find something you loved and wanting to bookmark and amplify, people would copy the title, and lede, add a paragraph of thoughts and click publish.
Some people would, maybe, see the post from an RSS reader. If no one saw it, well Google still used (and uses) links as a ranking factor, so value was added to the original publisher. It's not so different from an account with only a few followers sharing a story.
Twitter took over the microblogging slot. A handful of news aggregators and social sites now poorly substitute RSS. Social media generally replaced comment sections. A few large platforms are the home of many independent bloggers. We gave up control of the web.
I Want Control
Twitter is not an open system but an open-facing system. The same is true for many social and blogging sites. For example, Substack, a platform I use, makes the user's ownership of the content center to the marketing messaging.
On Substack, I cannot add URL redirects or canonicalize syndicated content. Users  may own what they create. But Substack is very much trying to frame itself as the home of that content. And making it hard to leave in a way that doesn't improve the product. I acknowledge these restrictions may help prevent spam, but they aren't open.
I will add a microblog for resharing links to my site in the coming days. I could use Pocket or Flipboard, but I'm tired of giving control to platforms that give the illusion of openness.
The Verge, added a microblog feed last year. The Verge is a massive media company, it pays those who create for it, as employees, not some weird not-technically-an-employee deal. More websites should add microblogs.
The moral warning of the blue check on a pike is stop giving up control of your data, your content, and your income without understanding the deal you're making. We need an open web, not digital land grabbing.

Hamas, Houthis & Hezbollah are the meme of those 3 spidermen pointing at each other 🔥
Well, no, Hamas is a Sunni militia, Hezbollah is a Twelver Shi'a militia, and AnsarAllah (the Houthis) is a Fiver Shi'a militia.
They are very much different

offer me + zyl and ye zun(:
meme.
Leave a “Offer Me” in my ask, and I’ll write a drabble about my character giving yours a gift.
The muted scrape of his house slippers flopping lazily upon the pavement heralded the arrival of Zhao Yunlan into his own home. A faded, threadbare bathrobe was all that protected him from the winter winds, his fuzzy slippers soaked and matted with muddy, melting snow. Fumbling for his housekeys with an arm full of discounted ramen packs, he was so relieved to be inside that he only noticed a figure leaning against within the threshold of his hallway door.
Yelping, Zhao Yunlan hugged the ramen to his chest, crushing them into a sad myriad of a million broken noodle pieces, even as his fright abated, immediately replacedby a spike of fond excitement as he saw the face of his beloved Shen Wei, and ending finally with a thick disappointment as he realized who it was.
His eyes narrowed, lips curling as his mouth attempted a friendly smile that was nothing more than a thinly-veiled disgust. "Home invasion?" he asked, tentatively.
Ye Zun rolled his eyes and produced an envelope from his front pocket, offering it up between the tips of his fingers. "Happy birthday," he said coldly. The greeting was no less than a threat.
Zhao Yunlan grimaced anew and refused to move. "It's not my birthday."
Ye Zun pursed his lips impatiently. "Early wedding present, then."
Wincing, Zhao Yunlan approached with care, instinctively lowering his hand gripping the ramen to protect himself in case Ye Zun decided to take a cheap shot at the family jewels. Carefully, he took the envelope with an uncomfrotable smile that was nothing more than baring his teeth awkwardly. "Thanks," he mumbled, opening the envelope with an exagerrated care.
Inside was a slip of paper, upon which was the half-obscured image printed on with bad quality ink. "A Groupon?" Zhao Yunlan asked, thoroughly confused. "Is that what it says?"
Ye Zun smirked, evidently pleased with himself. "Yeah. Six months of free haircuts at the SmartStyle Walmart salon. I could have sprung for a full year for another $5, but I figured I'd wait in case my brother changed his mind about you. Wouldn't want a good fiver to go to waste."
To his surprise, Zhao Yunlan smiled warmly, truly touched at the thoughtfulness. "Hey, thanks!" he said, before pulling Ye Zun into a genuine embrace. "That was really thoughtful of you!"
Ye Zun stiffened feeling those unfamiliar arms around him, and it was his turn to look concerned when Zhao Yunlan had finally let go of him. "... I'm saying you're ugly and you're not worth five dollars."
Zhao Yunlan nodded, smiling serenely. "I'm sure that's a compliment, coming from you! I mean, afterall, you did find the time to figure out where I lived, break in, and buy me haircuts. Like, that's kind of thoughtful of you—" He leaned in, smirking now. "Brother-in-law."
Ye Zun made a strangled sound of utter revulsion, making five hundred chins of recoiling disgust as he snatched the paper out of Zhao Yunlan's hands and hurtled himself out the door.

“I prefer watching from the sidelines to participating.” (Fiver & Alice)
Tumblr media
Fiver glanced over at Alice, feeling a strange wave of familiarity he couldn't quite place. Her words resonated with him, he often struggled to feel part of the crowd, even back home. "Yeah, I get that." He replied, voice quiet but thoughtful. "Sometimes it's easier to just watch, take it all in without getting too involved or risking anything." He shifted slightly, fleeting images and sensations already beginning to toy with him. "But...maybe that's why we're here." He mused, almost to himself as much as to Alice. "To stop watching and actually...figure things out." He looked around at all the masked figures, none he could recognise. But, something about them felt significant, even if he didn't understand exactly as to what. @fcrafcrtnight

Note
for monogatari, top three favorite characters and ops so far? :3
MY FAVORITES SO FAR YOU SAY? Well after thinking on it for a bit. I...put a LOT more thought into it than I thought I would, so for the sake of tags i'm gonna put this under a read more fdkjhfgd.
For the characters i'd say it's...
3 - Tsukihi Araragi. I made a sorta short post about her a few days ago that goes over a lot that I like about her, but to sum it up here...she's just such a fun character to see on screen with all of her varied designs with each arc. It makes for great visuals, and a good indicator of what point in time an arc takes place in when the series gets funny with it's chronology! Her straightforwardness as a character is such a huge strength that helps her stand out too, given how many layers you typically have to observe and peel back for other characters in this series. And her bluntness in conversation serves an amazing double purpose as both a tool for comedy, and for pushing forward other characters around her like Koyomi and Nadeko.
2 - Shinobu Oshino. It was actually really hard to decide this one, if only because there's SO many characters that I love to death. But I think Shinobu fits this spot perfectly. I really wasn't all that impressed with her in Bakemonogatari in the sense that like. I KNEW she was popular but didn't see why watching the series back as a teen. Also her hat was stupid and i'm glad she stopped wearing it. But unlike when I was a teen, Kizumonogatari was out, and my group decided to watch in Book Order...and then it clicked Oh. I see why Shinobu is so popular now. It made me understand just how big of a deal her choosing to speak again in Nisemonogatari was. And with Meme departing from the story, I think having her take his place as the Apparition Encyclopedia was a GREAT decision, not only because of her physical bond to Koyomi allowing her to appear whenever, it also gives us her AMAZING dynamic with him too. I genuinely love what a like....Scooby Doo problem solving duo they've become by the point of the story i'm at now. And as Onimonogatari taught me, there's STILL so much more of her to learn about. Also her laugh is cute. Ka-ka-ka!
1 - Tsubasa Hanekawa. Given my current icon, banner and...I dunno, HALF of my monogatari reblog tag, is this a surprise? I wanna write a whole entire post dedicated to her someday once I finish the whole series and read the novel versions too, but Hanekawa is just...okay, to try and keep it short. She's easily one of the most dynamic characters in the entire cast. As soon as Bake episode 1 starts, you already know that her and Koyomi have a history together, we know something was up with her and the story just, teases it all through Bake until it comes to a head in Tsubasa Cat. Kizu pulls the camera back to see how her friendship with and love for Koyomi began (and they're SO fun and sweet becoming friends with each other the whole arc), Nise shows that she's...SAYING she's changed, even though we know she really hasn't, before NekoBlack helps us establish the Full Picture of who Hanekawa is, and finally showing her FINALLY learning and growing for REAL in NekoWhite. I'd be doing a disservice if I didn't mention Black Hanekawa as well, for being a hilarious charatcter in her own right, and adding in a special degree of personal relatability to me personally in how i've experienced things in my life. She's just...I have so much more to say but she's just REALLY special to me is all.
And i'd like to give special mentions to Kaiki Deishuu and Sengoku Nadeko. I have no doubt that Nadeko is gonna be a top fiver by the end, but I wanna see the Conclusion of her main arc since Otorimonogatari is really only the beginning of it. And Kaiki is just a really fun character to think on with his faker philosophy, and he's a delight whenever he shows up just doing mundane things like eating donuts or being a weird uncle for Kanbaru.
As for my favorite OPs, this should go quicker i'd say...
3 - Platinum Disco. It's...It's Platinum Disco. It and Renai Ciruclation are like THE Monogatari songs right? At least they were when I was a teen. It's peppy, it's upbeat, it's got some fun clashing lyrics, the visuals are so iconic that the series itself memed on it, it's...it's Platinum Disco. You know?
2 - Mousou Express. For a song that I heard for the first time...lemme check...FIVE days ago? It shot up insanely high on my list. I feel kinda bad mentioning Renai Circulation twice in a row without it actually being one of the answers, but the way that Mousou Express just...flips Renai Circulation on it's head, both in the lyrics being far more openly possessive and obsessive than the cutesywootsie lyrics of the original, and the visuals quite literally being made up mostly in part of Renai's visuals in reverse...it sets up the turn Naedko's character is going to be taking AMAZINGLY, even before her spiral fully begins partway through the arc (from Our PoV anyway). Kanahana's singing is also just...top notch.
1 - Chocolate Insomnia. Given my current icon, banner, half of my monogatari reblog tag and...my answer above, is this much of a surprise? Much in the same way that Mousou Express is an amazing indicator of the direction Naedko's character would be going, Chocolate Insomnia is SUCH an amazing indicator of not only where Hanekawa will being going in the arc, but an amazing look back on how far she's COME since the beginning of the story. Opening with a heartfelt apology, before literally singing about the realizations she's come to by this point in the story, set to a FAR more openly hopeful and cheerful sounding song compared to her other two openings it's...it's just a masterpiece of a song. I love it so much.
And special mentions to Marshmallow Justice just being a really fun opening with REALLY good vocals from Eri Kitamura. And to White Lies for just being one of the most GORGEOUS openings visually. Absolute treat for the eyes to go with the more subdued song and vocals.

Currently re-reading Watership Down, and you know something? Nearly every time I'm very invested into the story- for example, the scene where everyone's getting on the fishing punt to escape Effrafa- I am heavily reminded of how British these bunnies are! "There's a good chap!"
I just had to draw Hazel like this.

i haven't gotten to meet the turali viera yet so idk how weird they are compared to the rava but the tidbit from erenville about his mentor it makes me think they have a rather different way of living and erenville did Not get taken out into the woods when he was 14 and have his mentors effectively repeatedly try to kill him until he was deemed good enough to live on his own
which just makes me laugh imagining fiver getting kind of excited on this whole trip, because he hasn't gotten to really hang out with another viera (from his star and who he would assume had a similar life experience as him) for this long since he was a kid, and trying to talk to erenville and relate with him about growing up and just everything he says about being rava has erenville looking at him like

I have to say that one of my main reasons for wanting to animate something is to make Watership Down fan animations and memes. Especially of those epic scenes that unfortunately no adaptation really took into account or adapted vaguely.
Like the scene of Fiver talking to Vervain, what a wild fucking scene, but it never got animated and I'm eternally infuriated by it.
