Principle of Karl Fischer
The idea of Karl Fischer’s titration is solely based on the oxidation reaction between sulphur dioxide and iodine. Iodine and sulphur dioxide react with water to form hydrogen iodide and sulphur trioxide, respectively. When all the water is drank, it reaches a conclusion. The chemical equation that takes place for the reaction between sulphur dioxide, iodine, and water (which is applied during the Karl Fischer titration) is provided below.
I₂ + SO₂ + H₂O → 2HI + SO₃
Applications of Karl Fischer
It can be used in technical products such as plastics, oils, gases
It is used in cosmetic products
It is used in pharmaceutical products
It is used in the industry

Karl Fisher Reagent
Karl Fischer reagent is a solution used in analytical chemistry to determine the water content in various substances. It is named after its inventor, German chemist Karl Fischer.
The reagent is typically composed of iodine, sulfur dioxide, and a base such as a pyridine or an imidazole. In the presence of water, iodine is converted to iodide ions, which are then oxidized back to iodine by sulfur dioxide. The amount of iodine consumed in the reaction is proportional to the amount of water present, which can be quantified through various techniques.
Karl Fischer reagent is commonly used in the laboratory to determine the water content of various materials such as solvents, oils, and pharmaceuticals. It is also utilised in the production of electronic components, where water contamination can adversely affect their performance.
Other uses of Karl Fischer reagents in the laboratory include:
Testing the water content in food and beverages
Measuring the water content in air and soil samples
Analyzing the water content in polymers and plastics
Quantifying the water content in cosmetics and personal care products
Some other top chemicals produced by Finar include HPLC Buffer and Ion Pair Reagent, GC Grade Solvents, Gradient HPLC, GC Grade Solvents, Analytical Reagents and more.

The problem with using value-added as a proxy for productivity is that value-added represents a combination of output (tangible and intangible) and prices/wages. ‘Productive’ employment in the tertiary sector, for instance, is as much a reflection of wage rates in that sector as any notion of productive output per se (for example, what is the output of a lawyer or a bureaucrat?) Hence, the use of value-added as a shorthand for productivity leads to absurd logical implications, such as the suggestion that a barber in the United States is 30 or more times more productive than a barber in India even though they both ‘produce’ the same number of haircuts per hour (according to the tastes and expectations of their clients), simply because the wage of the barber in the United States is 30 or more times higher. Or else, within the United States, that the ‘productivity’ of a lawyer is 20 times higher than that of a barber. The lawyer’s labour is certainly more valued than the barber’s, whether or not for good reason, but this has little to do with productivity (unless we consider that the power to leverage higher value for one’s labour is, in itself, a form of productivity). In other words, much of what we are picking up in most conventional measures of productivity actually amounts to price or wage differences, not actual effort or output, especially in economies that are increasingly based on services.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On this day, October 2, 1872, Jules Verne (1828-1905) sent his protagonist Phileas Fogg out on the adventure of a lifetime in his novel Around the World in Eighty Days. On the evening of October 2nd, while at the Club playing cards and debating how the world has grown smaller since a new railway section in India had made it possible to travel around the world, Fogg accepts a wager from his comrades for £20,000 to follow the Daily Telegraph’s itinerary of steamers and rails around the world and make it back to London in eighty days.
In observance of this fictional anniversary, we’re looking at The Limited Editions Club (LEC) publication of Around the World in Eighty Days written by Jules Verne and illustrated by Edward A. Wilson (1886-1970). It was published in 1962 and printed in an edition of 1500 copies by Saul and Lillian Marks at The Plantin Press in Los Angeles, California. The illustrations consist of sixteen pen-and-wash drawings by Wilson, reproduced in gravure by the Photogravure and Color Company of New York and then colored by hand in the studio of Walter Fischer.
Wilson, an attendee of the Art Institute of Chicago, illustrated over a dozen books, magazines, and World War II propaganda posters between 1924 and 1950. His vibrant work within LEC’s Around the World in Eighty Days reinforces a sense of wanderlust and adventure throughout the novel. In an eerie coincidence, October 2, 1970 is also the day Wilson passed away after a long struggle with an undisclosed illness.
The Special Collections holds number 289 of this limited-edition publication, from long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Happy birthday Viswanathan "Vishy" Anand!
Tumblr media
Vishy Anand, one of my favourite commentators from recent World Championships (he just seems like such a lovely guy and his analysis is always interesting and well explained), is an Indian chess grandmaster and a former five-time World Chess Champion. The FIRST grandmaster from India (he won the title in 1988) which is hard to believe given how many great Indian chess players there are now, he has the 8th highest peak FIDE raiting of all time. He remains the only player to have won the World Chess Championship in tournament, match, and knockout format, as well as rapid time controls.
Tumblr media
Vishy playing Kasparov, 1995.
As a teenager people called him "Lightning Kid" for his rapid playing speed, and later GMs who faced him often described him as one of the all-time greats alongside Garry Kasparov (a logical comparison given the schism in the World Championship and the fact most top GMs would have played both so could compare).
Tumblr media
As a lightning fast teenager in the 1980s.
Wikipedia describes him as "a well-liked figure throughout the chess world for two decades, evidenced by the fact that Kasparov, Kramnik, and Carlsen, all of whom were rivals for the world championship during Anand's career, each aided him in his preparations for the 2010 World Chess Championship" which is something I massively admire in sports people - the seemingly rare ability to be a top competitor AND be nice to people.
Check out his game 6 win against Karpov in the 1998 World Championship match for a great win at an important moment. Karpov had won the first four games, Vishy made a draw in game 5, and NEEDED to win. So what does he do? He plays the Trompowsky Attack (1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5) - rarely seen at GM level - and wins in 42 moves! Seriously, go google and admire. Sadly (for me at least since I'm a fan) he lost the WC in the tiebreaker games and didn't manage to become World Champion until two years later when he became the first world champion from Asia and the first world champion from outside the ex-Soviet Union since Bobby Fischer.
Tumblr media
Anand v. Kramnik at the 2008 World Championship, game 3.
OR check out game 3 of his World Championship match against Kramnik in 2008. Here Vishy has the black pieces playing against Kramnik's Queen's Gambit Declined - they go into a really tactically sharp line known as the Blumenfeld Attack (this is part of the Semi-Slav defence, classical merin variation if you want to look it up). On move 14 Vishy plays a novelty - a new idea - that Kramnik needs to refute if he's to win. Vishy's idea is to just give up a pawn (which is usually defended) in favour of attacking the white king. Two pawns down, Vishy rejects the possibility of a draw and goes on the attack with Kramnik's king on the run. It's exciting stuff and unbelievably tense when you imagine the WC conditions they were playing in!
Tumblr media
Vishy about to beat defending champion Magnus Carlsen in Game 3 of the 2014 World Chess Championship in Sochi.
His career is way too long and too well documented to be worth going into any greater detail - google is your friend here - but what a great player. Well worth delving into his games, not least as he was one of the first to embrace computer prep so that alone is an interesting development.

Tombs Rich in Artifacts Discovered in Cyprus
An archaeological expedition from Sweden's University of Gothenburg has uncovered tombs rich in artifacts and antiquities in Cyprus that makes the discovery among the richest ever found in the Mediterranean region.
Peter Fischer, the leader of the expedition and a professor of archaeology at the University of Gothenburg, said “considering the richness of the grave goods, it is a reasonable assumption that these were royal tombs, even though we do not know much about the form of government practiced in the city at the time."
Fischer believes that the artifacts, found just outside the Bronze Age trading city of Hala Sultan Tekke, indicate the tombs' occupants ruled the city, which was a center for copper trade between 1500–1300 BCE. The tombs, located outside the 50-hectare city, consist of underground chambers of varying sizes, accessed via a narrow passage from the surface.
Cyprus' Department of Antiquities, in an update posted to their website, noted: "The city’s wealth seems to have been based on the production of copper and trade with near and distant cultures. Judging by the rich burial gifts, the tombs belonged to families of the city’s ruling class who took part in the export of copper and intercultural trade."

Unearthed artifacts include imports from Egypt, Baltic region
The Swedish Söderberg expedition has been carrying out excavations in Hala Sultan Tekke near the city of Larnaca on the south coast of Cyprus since 2010. Though the expedition has previously found chamber tombs with valuable grave goods, the latest discovery is unprecedented given the superb quality and quantity of artifacts.
“We found more than 500 complete artifacts distributed among two tombs. Many of the artifacts consist of precious metals, gems, ivory and high-quality ceramics," Fischer said.
About half of the artifacts unearthed during the expedition are believed to have been imported from different civilizations. For example, gold and ivory came from Egypt while precious stones, such as blue lapis lazuli, dark red carnelian and blue-green turquoise, were imported from Afghanistan, India and Sinai respectively. Amber objects from the Baltic region were also found among the artifacts.
The Department of Antiquities said that three chamber tombs, preliminarily dated to the 14th century BC, were exposed. While one of them had been looted, most likely in the 19th century AD, the other two were "undisturbed", apart from the collapse of their chambers.
Items recovered from those include locally produced pottery and ornaments and numerous items of jewelry such as diadems, which are ornamental headbands. Embossed images of bulls, gazelles, lions and flowers adorn the diadems. Bronze weapons, some inlaid with ivory, were also recovered as well as a gold-framed seal made of the hard mineral hematite with inscriptions of gods and rulers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Several items of ivory and faience are imports from Egypt during the famous 18th Dynasty, the time of the well-known pharaohs Thutmose III, Amenophis IV (Akhenaten) and his wife Nefertiti," said the department.
The excavation team used magnetometers, a type of instrument that can produce images showing objects and structures up to two meters beneath the surface, to carry out their expedition, according to the university.
Besides artifacts, the research team also unearthed several well-preserved skeletons in the tombs including one of a woman surrounded by dozens of ceramic vessels, jewelry and a round bronze mirror. A one-year-old child with a ceramic toy also lay beside her.

Young Queen Charlotte, played by India Amarteifio, keeps to innocent pastels in her early scenes, but her colors grow bolder as her power does too.  (Liam Daniel/Netflix)
BY VALLI HERMAN
In the first minutes of the “Bridgerton” prequel “Queen Charlotte,” the namesake character complains heartily how her elaborate gown and its restrictive corset made of brittle and sharp whalebone means that if she moves too much, “I might be sliced and stabbed to death by my undergarments.”
Oh, dearest gentle reader, young Queen Charlotte hasn’t suffered in vain. Her every ensemble, and those of the show’s sizable cast, are crafted with such sumptuous detail, that surely all who view them would gladly have them suffer even more.
Even though period costumes are notoriously cumbersome, Emmy-winning costume designer Lyn Elizabeth Paolo and co-costume designer Laura Frecon dispel notions that the actors suffered much (thanks to light, modern fabrics and stretchy panels in their corsets). Still, the yearlong shoot in grand estates across the United Kingdom overlapped the pandemic lockdown and required worldwide sourcing. It seems that their brand of elegant finery was a tonic for distress, and a cause for celebration. The work, helped by a 220-person costume crew, has earned them a 2023 Emmy nomination for period costumes.
Tumblr media
Replica undergarments were crafted from light, modern fabrics and stretchy panels to be slightly more comfortable than the actual period clothing. (Liam Daniel/Netflix)
“This [shoot] was challenging, but also joyful. Every time a piece of a costume would come back, it was, ‘Oh, my God! It looks better than we thought it would.’ There was a lot of joy there,” says Paolo, the longtime designer for other Shonda Rhimes productions, such as “Inventing Anna” and “Scandal.”
The six-episode costume drama on Netflix explores the early days of the difficult marriage of Queen Charlotte (India Amarteifio) and King George III (Corey Mylchreest). The fictionalized story of the actual royals takes place in two time periods — the Georgian era of the 1760s and the later Regency era in which “Bridgerton” is set — and includes key characters from the original show. There are several grand balls, a royal wedding and a coronation to wardrobe. No biggie.
Or so Paolo was led to believe.
“I remember Sara Fischer, who is head of production at Shondaland, called me and said, ‘Shonda has this idea for a small, intimate show. She really wants you to do it.’ And, what are you going to say?” recalls Paolo, who was a consultant on Season 2 of “Bridgerton.”
She invented a time-twisting concept inspired by Monet and Matisse paintings and modern fashion designers who themselves referenced historical costume such as John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Moschino, Zuhair Murad and Christian Dior in his New Look era. Yet Paolo kept the silhouette appropriately Georgian.
“The pitch was, we kind of want it to look like a Met Ball … but to be slightly more on point with the period. We still wanted to have our own stylistic elements that would make sure that the modern eye understood the costumes,” Paolo says.
Tumblr media
Corey Mylchreest as King George and India Amarteifio as Queen Charlotte all but sparkle in their lustrous clothing. (Nick Wall/Netflix)
“For the men, we had images of rock ‘n’ roll icons from the ‘70s and ‘80s. So a lot of images of Prince, the New Romantics and Adam Ant. All those people back then who had that pirate chic going on.”
That vision required a mostly custom-made wardrobe that sourced from London, Los Angeles, New York, Budapest and Spain. Jewelers Joseff of Hollywood, Manhattan’s Larkspur & Hawk and Italy’s Pikkio custom made the period jewelry and other adornments. British manufacturer James Hare supplied traditional fabrics as did a mill hours from London that wove custom fabrics. Smaller artisan shops focused on hand embroidery or a particular character.
“It was sort of a small army,” says Paolo, who relied on the organizational skills of Frecon. A giant calendar and flow chart helped them track the flow of work, particularly of the embroidered pieces, which were outsourced to UK specialists Twan Lentjes Creations, Beth Parry and Hattie McGill, whose Instagram accounts illustrate their handiwork.
Tumblr media
Other members of the court stand out in patterned fabrics (on Tunji Kasim as Adolphus) and brightly colored gowns with hats (Arsema Thomas as Agatha Danbury).
“It’s so complicated,” Paolo says, describing a process of sample making, initial embroidery, further tailoring and additional hand embellishing before a pattern piece is ever fitted into a garment. Even fabric-covered buttons were embroidered.
The women’s gowns are especially intensive. The earlier dresses, from 1760 onward, required 13 to 20 yards of fabric and at least four weeks of construction; five if they’re heavily embellished. Each ensemble requires petticoats that can add five to 10 more yards each, plus a corset, a pannier (a cage-like underpinning), a padded bum roll, shoes, stockings and garters. The jewelry sets were matched to each costume and included rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and tiara-like hair jewelry that was fitted into fantastical wigs by hair and makeup designer Nic Collins.
With two sets of characters to dress in two different eras, the costume designers were careful to build visual continuity, typically with color. Young Queen Charlotte, for example, keeps to innocent pastels in her early scenes, but her colors grow bolder as her power does too. The designers cannot precisely count the number of costume changes, or quantify the number of pieces they used, only to say “in the thousands.” Paolo says Jeff Jur, director of photography, was on board to capture the spectacle and regularly texted her and Frecon to say, “‘I’m doing a full head-to-toe shot of this one.”
Still, it’s tricky to absorb all of the detail, even though it’s there on the hand-embroidered initials on a man’s handkerchief, or the restored antique jet beading and lace on Queen Charlotte’s mourning gown, or the Easter eggs, as Paolo calls the references she wove into many costumes, particularly those in the final episode, which features an astronomy-themed ball, hosted by the king and queen.
King George loves astronomy, so stars and moons are embroidered and beaded into their clothes. The ball was shot outdoors at night, which usually obscures costume details. Jur expertly lit the scene to illuminate the clothes that were so laden with sparkly bits that they twinkle.
Though the final episode was picked to submit for Emmy consideration, the choice was “brutal,” Paolo said. “It’s a huge group of amazingly talented people who all deserve recognition. If we are lucky enough to win, I would want 220 miniature ones to hand out to everyone.”

Hey anon, you threw a tantrum in my inbox at midnight. But you know what, I'll address your ask bit by bit, because I'm nice.
Tumblr media
It's every news organization that is blatantly Hinduphobic and either refuses to cover actual cases or alters its headlines to be misleading. The Citizenship Amendment Bill you're speaking about is not taking away citizenship rights, oh my god. Do your goddamn research. Here is what it actually entails.
Next. I reblogged a-s fischer's reply because that was the one I was focusing on. Not to mention all the news articles in the other reblogs were all thinly veiled propaganda. My "sources" were all actual fucking cases, buddy. When did I pretend that's all there is. a-s fischer blocked me like a coward after replying to me.
Tumblr media
Huh. I'd love to know what your definition of Islamophobia is, because it seems like NOBODY ON THIS DAMN WEBSITE CAN SEEM TO AGREE ON A DEFINITION. I've defended every single thing Modi does? Absolutely not. BJP is a political party in the end, and they have members who are absolute pieces of shit. For example, Brij Bhushan Singh. I hate who he is as a human being, and he deserves absolutely no power. He deserves NOTHING. Understand this. Just because I talk about the positive side of BJP does not mean I won't condemn them when it is required. I will bash them when it's necessary, you condescending ass.
Tumblr media
Yeah, we are educating people about our cultures, because currently, all I've seen over Tumblr is hatred for our own religion, Hinduphobia and antisemitism running WILD.
Also, I am Indian? I'm literally Marathi. I wasn't even replying to tikkunolamorgtfo, i was replying to a-s fischer. The OP wasn't even who I was talking about. Why can't a Jewish person be Indian? When did I ever assume that? a-s fischer was literally calling Hindutva "Hinduva" for god's sake.
Tumblr media
Bro, you think we have an agenda, I promise you we don't. I'm an 18-year-old girl in college who's trying to spread awareness about Hinduphobia. That's literally it. Go piss your pants and cry about it somewhere else.
Tumblr media
Liar liar pants on fire. Let's not pretend that the media in India isn't heavily skewed. The prejudice is real, and the media is perfectly happy to twist headlines to frame us as villains. I'd tell you to use your critical thinking skills, but from this long-ass rant you sent me, I can tell you don't have any.

Finar’s Best Laboratory Chemical: Karl Fischer Reagent
Laboratory chemicals are known to be substances employed in scientific research, analysis, and experimentation. They can include a wide range of substances such as acids, bases, solvents, reagents, and other chemicals that are used to conduct experiments and analyze samples in a laboratory setting.
These chemicals are typically highly purified and have known properties and characteristics, making them useful for a variety of scientific applications. They may be used in fields such as chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering to conduct experiments, make measurements, or analyze samples.
It is important to handle laboratory chemicals with care and follow proper safety procedures to ensure the safety of both the researcher as well as the environment. Proper storage, handling, and disposal of these chemicals are also critical to prevent accidents and minimize environmental impact. Therefore, the lab chemical suppliers take ample care before using these chemicals.
A very common and widely used laboratory chemical happens to be the Karl Fischer reagent. Let’s take a closer look at it
Karl Fischer reagent is a commonly used laboratory reagent used for the determination of water content in a wide range of samples. A German chemist named Karl Fischer developed this method of water analysis. Hence, the reagent is called Karl Fischer.
Karl Fischer reagent consists of an iodine solution, sulfur dioxide, pyridine, and a solvent such as methanol or ethanol. The reagent is added to the sample, and the water in the sample reacts with iodine to produce iodide ions. The iodide ions are then titrated with a standardized solution of iodine to determine the water content in the sample.
The Karl Fischer method is highly specific and accurate for the determination of water content in samples, even at very low levels. It is generally used in a variety of laboratory applications, including in the pharmaceutical, food, and chemical industries.
Some specific uses of Karl Fischer reagents in laboratories include:
Analysis of water content in pharmaceuticals, including tablets, capsules, and syrups.
Testing water content in food and beverage products such as juices, dairy products, and canned goods.
Analysis of water content in chemicals such as solvents, surfactants, and polymers.
What is the general method of preparing Karl Fischer's reagent?
Start with high-purity iodine crystals and sulfur dioxide gas. The iodine should be sublimed and distilled to remove any impurities.
Place the iodine crystals in a round-bottom flask with a magnetic stir bar.
Slowly add the sulfur dioxide gas to the flask with vigorous stirring. The reaction between iodine and sulfur dioxide will produce iodine monochloride, which is a key intermediate in the formation of the final reagent.
Continue stirring the mixture until all of the iodine has dissolved and the solution becomes clear. The solution will have a yellow colour due to the presence of iodine monochloride.
Once the iodine has dissolved, add the base component, typically pyridine or imidazole. The base is added to the solution to scavenge the hydrogen ions produced during the reaction between iodine and water, allowing the reaction to continue until all the water is consumed.
The final solution is a Karl Fischer reagent that can be used for water determination in a variety of samples.
It is important to note that the preparation of Karl Fischer reagent requires proper safety precautions, including the use of a fume hood and appropriate personal protective equipment. Additionally, the specific recipe and conditions for preparing Karl Fischer reagents may vary depending on the intended use and the supplier of the reagents.
If you’re searching for the best laboratory chemicals manufacturers in India, Finar Chemicals is where you need to be! It is a leading manufacturer of laboratory chemicals, offering a wide range of high-purity solvents, reagents, and biochemicals. With a robust focus on quality, innovation, and sustainability, Finar Chemicals has become a trusted name in the chemical industry.

Chess: A Game of Strategy and Skill
Tumblr media
Introduction to Chess
What is chess?
Chess is a two-player board game played on a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8x8 grid. Each player begins with sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.
Brief history of chess
The origins of chess can be traced back to ancient India, where it was known as "chaturanga." Over time, the game spread to Persia, Arabia, and Europe, evolving into the modern version we know today.
Basic Rules of Chess
Setup of the chessboard
The chessboard is set up with each player's pieces placed on opposite sides. The board is oriented so that each player has a white square at the right-hand corner.
Movement of pieces
Each type of chess piece has its own unique way of moving across the board. For example, the knight moves in an L-shape, while the bishop moves diagonally. The objective of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, putting it in a position where it cannot escape capture.
Objective of the game
The ultimate goal in chess is to checkmate your opponent's king, putting it in a position where it is under attack and cannot move to any unoccupied square without being captured.
Importance of Strategy in Chess
Importance of planning ahead
In chess, strategic thinking is essential for success. Players must anticipate their opponent's moves and plan their own strategy accordingly.
Tactics vs. strategy
While tactics focus on short-term maneuvers and specific sequences of moves, strategy involves long-term planning and overarching goals.
