hey! Can i ask for a high school headcannon for Irresistible Mistakes?
before they meet the mc in the future? :D
That’s interesting. Thanks for the request. I chose to not write for Natsume, because in his MS is mentioned how he was in high school and he has a life-long story with MC. Hope you’ll like it. ❤️
‘Irresistible mistakes’ boys in high school
Shunichiro Tachibana
Was one of the best students his school ever had.
Every teacher liked him.
Every parent liked him.
Every student liked him.
He was the one who had the guts and the influence to correct a teacher and not be scolded because of this.
Had a lot of friends, though his best friend was always Yuki. Wasn’t as close with anyone else as he is with the doctor.
No one really knew with whom he was dating if he was.
He knew that he had a big fanbase and tried to hide his feelings to not hurt anyone.
Was drawing doodles even on the test papers. But the teachers liked him too much to care about them.
Someone once tried to pick a fight with him.
Shun was smart enough to understand that he wasn’t the best fighter. And was smooth enough to convince everyone to give up on that.
His classmates call him one in a while to just catch up with what he is doing.
His teachers do it too.
Toshiaki Kijima
That super popular guy who has no idea that he is popular.
Everyone in his school knew who he was. There was even a fan club dedicated to him.
Had two or three good friends with whom he always hanged out.
Teachers saw him driving the motorcycle outside the school and weren’t too happy about this. But knew that they couldn’t do anything, because they were scared of his father.
“Kijima-sempai, I like you.”
*Toshiaki looking away, not knowing what to do with the girl in front of him, so they just stay there in silence for an unreasonable amount of time*
Has a big quantity of love letters and doesn’t know what to do with them. He can’t throw them away, because it’s disrespectful. But didn’t answer them either.
After he finished school, only his mom knew where those letters are hidden.
Definitely was the school council president or at least the class president, for more than a year.
Probably had his first relationship in high school. At it was a pretty serious one.
Likes to go to school reunions, but is very awkward at them. Will bring MC with him to feel more relaxed.
Toma Kiriya
Put a little bit of teen Toshiaki and a little bit of teen Keita and you have a big teen Toma.
Not everyone understood him because of *sarcasm*.
His humor just started to develop on his own way. So he was sometimes more than rude.
Student 1: “What’s that small and dark point in the sky?” Student 2: “I think it’s a bird.” Toma: “Nah. It’s our bright future, flying away.”
Was that taken, but very popular guy.
Participated in more than one fight, because he couldn’t stand to see when someone was bullied.
His parents had to come to the principal.
Had no idea how to tell girls that he couldn’t accept their feelings, so he just made it very obvious that he had a girlfriend.
Knew more than each math teacher he met.
Helped his classmates with studying, even if he was complaining every time.
Go Okubo
Wasn’t popular at all in middle school.
Though, he bloomed in high school.
He still wasn’t very sociable then, but that was when he started to develop his social skills.
That silent and good guy, who sits on the back of the class and is friends with the cutest and shiest girl in the school and the most famous bad-boy in the neighborhood.
No one knew who he was before he sang at a school event.
His fame took him unprepared.
But he was smart enough to know how to use it.
Didn’t have problems with grades. But wasn’t the best.
Once met one of his classmates at the bar and pretended he didn’t recognize him.
He just wanted to avoid unnecessary small talks.
Though, when the classmate finally understood who was in front of him, Go found out that it wasn’t as bad as he imagined it could be.
Taku Hayama
School? What school?
Of course, he attended it. He even had the best marks in the class.
But did he care enough? Not really.
He is the one who doesn’t have to pretend that he doesn’t recognize his classmates.
He really doesn’t.
He liked them, he felt good in his class, but didn’t ever think about remaining lifetime friends with them.
Though, he remembers his first girlfriend.
The truth is that he was shy and awkward in school.
He didn’t want to be too close to anyone then.
He has a lot of good memories from school.
But he chose to let them be only memories.
Yukihisa Maki
Borderline delinquent.
It’s not that he was drinking, smoking, running away or fighting.
No, he did nothing out of this list.
He was that kid that is hated by the teachers because he couldn’t stop correcting them and didn’t acknowledge their statute.
He knew perfectly well what he was doing, but didn’t care enough to be more diplomatic.
When he was silent, that meant he was sleeping.
Surprisingly, his parents weren’t ever called to come to school.
He was just too good at making everyone acknowledge that he was right and innocent.
And he was. But at what cost?
Girls liked him, but he couldn’t care less.
He didn’t go further than just flirting with them.
Shun and Yuki duo was the most popular in the entire neighborhood.
They were the rich popular kids out of the rich and popular kids.
Keita Mitsuura
Everyone’s favorite.
Teachers, girls, boys, staff, pets, flowers. Everyone liked him.
Wasn’t the best at studying, but had very good charisma.
Was popular even in elementary school.
Had some short relationships.
Tried each and every school club.
Was in the student council and was nearly voted to be the president, but he didn’t want to go that far.
Was the one responsible for the school’s newspaper.
Is the one who organizes the school reunions and everyone comes, because they can’t resist his charms.
Rei Kamiki
That one kid who sleeps at school and when the teacher asks him a question, he always gives the right answer.
Really, every teacher tried at least once to do this.
Didn’t have the best attendance.
Was too bored to go to every lesson.
Didn’t know all his classmates. He can’t even remember half of them when he looks at the graduation album.
His parents were called a few times and asked to talk with him about his ‘bad behavior’.
It didn’t help.
Had friends from other classes and other schools. Boys and girls.
Was too oblivious to understand when someone had a crush on him.
Started to work early. And had a pretty big and stable income.
Jun Araki
Definitely the school body president.
Even teachers respected him and were afraid of him.
Not all people had the guts to look him in the eyes.
His classmates loved him. Every time someone needed help or had a problem to solve, they asked him.
Because of him, the school made a lot of improvements for students.
The best grades, the best attendance, nearly the best behavior.
Had good relationships with everyone, even with the delinquents and Queen Bees.
Some of the students found out that he lived in an orphanage and tried to make fun of him because of this.
He just admitted it and left them in their misery.
Had more part-time jobs at once than anyone can imagine.
When he wasn’t working, he was studying. When he wasn’t studying, he was working.
Had a big crush on someone, but was too shy to admit it. Also, he didn’t have enough time to date.
Even after so much time, his classmates call him and asks how he is doing.
Law-key likes to go to school reunions.

Rebellion
Part 8 of Dragon of the Yuyan
Read on AO3 | Series Masterpost
The prisoner is tiny.
That’s the first thing Zuko notices, when Banli Squad returns triumphant from their mission with a figure wrapped in heavy iron netting like a landed fish. Tiny, and young. Zuko would be damned if the kid was a day older than eleven. The top of their bald, tattooed head barely comes up to the middle of Zuko’s chest.
White hot rage shoots through him as Zheng shoves the Avatar down the corridor ahead of him, radiating smugness like a fucking peacock. He wants to rip that netting off and carry the kid away from here, away from Zhao who acts like the entire Stronghold and everyone in it is his to do whatever the fuck he wants with.
The plan, dum dum, remember the plan, he chants to himself, and holds onto his control with both hands and every ounce of stubbornness in his body.
+
Do you think it’s true? The Avatar’s returned? Zuko had demanded, barely waiting for the Commander’s office door to close behind him. The announcement had been made twenty minutes ago, and Zuko had immediately followed the older man to his office when he’d left the mess hall.
Commander Toshiaki hadn’t replied immediately, but had reached into a desk drawer and pulled out a bottle of rotgut. He’d poured two cups, knocked one back, and pushed the other toward Zuko, who sipped at it warily, grimacing at the taste.
The Commander had dropped into his desk chair and tilted his head back for a moment before beginning to sign. I can’t imagine the Fire Lord making an announcement like that unless there was some truth to it. Either way, it changes things.
No kidding! Zuko had snapped. The Commander shot him a Look, and Zuko had winced and signed a quick Sorry, sir.
The Commander had sighed silently. If anything, all it does is move the timeline up rather a lot. It shouldn’t take the Avatar very long to gather followers and allies, and as the main aggressor in the war, the Fire Lord will be their main focus.
Instead of waiting for Azula to come of age and then to get impatient, we just cut her out of the line completely, Zuko had realized. Instead of the war dragging on for another four years or more, the Avatar can help us end it sooner. Within the year, even!
The Commander had nodded. We need to stay alert for opportunities slip away and rendezvous with the Avatar and their followers. I have a list of Troop members who are willing to defect. When the opportunity presents itself, you will give the signal, and the Yuyan Archers will disappear.
+
Zuko meets the Commander’s eyes, and blinks. The Commander blinks back.
Zuko slips down a service corridor, and races back to the Yuyan dorm. He grabs the bag he’d kept prepared for this exact scenario and his dao, and shimmies up into the ventilation shaft. With his most recent growth spurt, it’s a bit of a snug fit, and Zuko suddenly has to wrestle back the panicked thought of oh Agni what if I get stuck. He pauses, breathes a few deep breaths, and continues on to the bathroom, where he gets his Blue Spirit uniform on as fast as he can. His hair gets tied back into a braid, the length of which is tucked under his tunic and hood. His dao go on his back, every single throwing knife he owns is strapped somewhere on his body, and he carefully burns the clothes he was wearing in the brazier that heats the water for the ofuro. The bag his Blue Spirit materials were in gets folded up as small as Zuko can possibly make it and tucked into the back of his belt. Could be useful later.
He fastens his mask as securely as he possibly can, and Cadet Zuko of the Yuyan Archers disappears. In his place stands the Blue Spirit, ready for war.
By now the Avatar will have been secured in one of the cells at the top of the Central Tower, where the most powerful benders are kept for holding. Zuko ensures that he has left no trace of his presence in the bathroom, and makes his way upstairs as fast as he can, employing every shadow-walking technique he knows to avoid detection.
It’s caution well spent, because the upper detention level is crawling with Stronghold guards. At least a dozen of them. Zhao may be a pompous ass and a creep to rival Koh themself, but he’s not completely stupid. These guys must be new, though, or they came with the Admiral, because they are not nearly as wary of dark corners and high shadowed ceilings as they should be.
It’s quick work knocking the idiots out and looping lengths of chain around their ankles to hang them from the rafters like freshly hunted game. If this were a training exercise, he would’ve just left them where they had fallen, but Zuko can’t afford the possibility that they’d wake up and be able to come after him and the Avatar. Getting out of the Stronghold is going to be hard enough, no need to alert anyone to the breakout any earlier than necessary.
Only one of the cells has a guard at the door, who is reaching for the signaling horn as Zuko peeks around the corner. Zuko grabs a bucket of water kept for the guards to drink on duty in one hand, and throws one of his knives with the other. The horn is knocked out of the guard's hand, and as Zuko rushes him the man shoots a rather paltry plume of flame at him. Zuko doesn't miss a beat as he throws the water into the strike, then whips the bucket into the man's leading foot to break his root.
Thank Agni for Mika's "learn-to-fight-with-any-kind-of-random-shit" lessons, he thinks a bit hysterically as the man goes crashing to the floor. He binds the man with his own handcuffs, borrowing a second set that had fallen from another guard's belt to bind his ankles, and ties a length of cloth he finds in the last guard's pocket into a gag.
He takes a minute to retrieve his throwing knife and to breathe, and he can very distantly hear Zhao's ridiculous speech echoing up from the main courtyard.
+
Zhao had arrived about two weeks after the Winter Solstice, just in time for the Fire Nation Armed Forces' rumor mill to have built up a full head of steam. He had swept into the Stronghold like he'd owned the place, towering over Colonel Shinu in a ridiculous attempt to intimidate the much shorter man, but he had still been a Commander at the time and the Colonel had quickly put him in his place. The complete 180° turn the man's personality had taken at that point had completely creeped Zuko out, had reminded him uncomfortably of Azula, and he'd done his absolute best not to be caught alone with him.
A few days after Zhao's arrival, Commander Toshiaki had indicated that he'd wanted a meeting, and Zuko had met him in his office.
Zhao has been trying to convince Colonel Shinu to allow him to use the Archers in his hunt for the Avatar, the Commander had signed as soon as the door was closed behind Zuko. The tension in the older man's body had been obvious, his signs rigidly composed.
There's no way the Colonel will go for that, Zuko had replied, trying to decipher the Commander's body language. Disapproval, maybe? Or anger? Either were rarely seen from the stern but kind officer, and therefore hard to recognize.
He may no longer have a choice. The Commander's jaw clenched. Anger, then, and Zuko had felt proud of himself that he'd felt no unease at all around the Commander as he'd struggled to hold his temper. A messenger hawk arrived last night. Zhao has been promoted to Admiral by the Fire Lord.
Fuck, Zuko had stated into the whirling chaos of his mind. With that wonderful piece of news, it was only a matter of time before the Avatar was captured.
My Prince, I also have reason to believe that your safety could be compromised should Zhao discover your identity, the Commander continued. He has been overheard making… comments… about your performance in the Agni Kai against the Fire Lord, as well as voicing theories as to your current location and opinions of how you should be treated when returned to royal custody. A small, distant part of Zuko had mused that if the Commander had been a bender, he would’ve seared the top of his desk black in his rage.
I believe, Prince Zuko, that it would be prudent of you to consider vacating the Stronghold sooner rather than later. The Commander had looked like every sign he’d made had been physically painful, which had eased the pain in Zuko’s own heart of being ousted from his home again. This time was not for someone else’s gain or convenience, but for Zuko’s own safety. And it wasn’t going to be forever, like his abandonment. No matter what ended up happening, Zuko knew he would see his Troop, his family, again. Kai would hunt him down, to say nothing of the rest of Chihese Squad and the Commander himself.
I understand, Commander, Zuko had replied, smiling at his commanding officer. Depending on how quickly the Avatar is apprehended, the Blue Spirit should be able to escort them away without too much effort.
+
Famous last words, Zuko growls silently to himself as he picks the lock on the cell. It’s a new model, something Zhao had installed in the last couple of weeks as he prepared to imprison the Avatar, and Zuko hasn’t had enough opportunity to practice picking it between avoiding Zhao and smuggling supplies and his belongings out of the Stronghold with his squad under the guise of “wilderness training”.
It takes forty-seven seconds more than Zuko really cares to admit, but he does finally get the cell door open, and he slips inside and shuts the door behind him.
The Avatar is chained hand and foot in the center of the cavernous cell, arms held out and fastened to the two huge torches that provide the only light in the room. Their odd yellow, orange, and brown clothes are tattered and splashed with mud, and their skin is ghostly pale. Their stormy gray eyes are huge in their face as they stare at Zuko.
Zuko draws his dao, and rushes forward in a form meant to build momentum. The Avatar screams and cringes back, squeezing their eyes shut. Zuko’s blades slice cleanly through the chains holding their arms, and it takes the Avatar a moment to realize that they aren’t hurt and to stop screaming and open their eyes. They stare in bafflement at the manacles on their wrists, which Zuko also slices off. He finishes with the cuffs on their feet, and strides back to the cell door.
“Who are you? What’s going on?” The Avatar’s voice calls out, high with prepubescence and stress. “Are you here to rescue me?”
Duh, Zuko thinks, opening the door and making sure the coast is clear before turning back and making a vague come on gesture.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” the Avatar mumbles, warily following him. Their footsteps are barely audible against the steel-clad floors, and Zuko has to listen extra hard to make sure they’re still with him.
“My frogs!” The Avatar gasps, and Zuko has just enough time to think what? before those nearly silent footsteps go pattering off in another direction. He clenches his teeth behind the mask and follows, catching up as the Avatar is kneeling on the floor trying to catch a bunch of half-frozen wood frogs. He grabs the kid by the collar of their weird tunic and hauls them away, and cringes when the little idiot hollers for the entire Stronghold to hear, “But my friends need to suck on those frogs!”
Zuko switches his grip on this absolute moron of an Avatar from their collar to the front of their tunic, (gently) pushes them against the closest wall, and flicks them between the eyes hard with his free hand. Then he puts his finger against the grinning mouth of his mask for quiet.
The Avatar has the grace to be chagrined, at least. “I’m sorry,” they whisper. “It’s just— I got captured ‘cause I was gathering those frogs ‘cause my friends are sick and the crazy old lady on the top of the mountain said that they needed to suck on the frozen frogs to get better and I’m really worried about them— my friends, not the frogs— but I know I gotta be quiet so we can get out of here, right?”
Great Agni and all the stars, how is this kid the spirits-damned Avatar? Zuko bites back a sigh, nods sharply, and makes a note that the Avatar has ill companions that need treatment. The Avatar nods back, eyes huge in their pale face.
Zuko leads the way to the main sewer line, which the pair of them follow out of the Central Tower and to the back courtyard. A quick peek through the bars above their heads reveals that the coast is clear, and Zuko points upward to indicate to the Avatar that they need to pull themselves up through the bars. The Avatar follows without a word, and they break for the rope that hangs from the top of the Stronghold’s innermost wall, left there by one of the Archers on Commander Toshiaki’s orders.
They’re halfway up the rope when the alarm sounds. Zuko can hear Zhao shouting that the Avatar has escaped!”, and some bootlicker responds with “There! On the wall!”. Zuko has five seconds to curse his fucking luck before the rope in his hands goes slack and they start to fall.
The Avatar does something, and with a roar of wind Zuko feels himself slowing down in midair, and they both land gently on their feet. Zuko draws his dao and points with one to the gates starting to close. As one he and the Avatar start running for the gates as Zhao shouts "Close all the gates immediately!" like the gatemen don't know how to do their freaking jobs.
"Stay close to me!" The Avatar tells him, and all Zuko can do is nod and try to keep up as the Avatar zooms towards the gate, faster than a normal human can run. Zuko's no slouch, racing against Jiyoti will ensure that, but after airbending a line of guards out of the way, the Avatar seems to forget that Zuko can't run as fast, because they book it for the gate and leave Zuko in the dust.
He gets cornered, surrounded by guards with spears, and it takes everything he has to keep from bending, because if even the slightest spark slips from his blades he’s done for. Abruptly the guards disappear, blown away by the Avatar’s airbending, and Zuko has a moment to wonder why they don’t bend any of the other elements before the Avatar swings a broken spear like a trebuchet and Zuko goes flying.
He lands on top of the innermost wall and immediately tucks into a roll to bleed off the momentum. He hears the clomping steps of the guards approaching and snaps to his feet, swords out and held at the ready, and then something slams into his upper back and a steel band wraps around his chest under his arms, and with a jerk he’s flying again.
They land with a crash on the intermediate wall, and Zuko’s blades clatter away. He doesn’t have time to grab them, though, because the Avatar’s been cornered by a guard at least twice their size. Their makeshift staff has been knocked away, and Zuko doesn’t think before he grabs the guard around the middle and throws him off the wall.
They reach the other side of the wall just as more guards come up the bamboo emergency ladders. The Avatar blows the first two ladders clear with their airbending, and Zuko just finishes clearing the third and barely has time to sheath his blades before the Avatar is handing him one of the ladders with a hurried "hold this!". They have the second ladder in their arms, and they jump onto the parapet of the wall and step onto the third ladder, pushing it away from the wall.
"Jump on my back!" The absolutely wolf-bat fucking crazy Avatar calls at him, and Zuko can do nothing but obey. His momentum and weight are what tip the ladder over fully away from the wall, and the Avatar maneuvers the ladder in his arms so that the pair of them stilt-walk across the no-man's land between the intermediate and outer walls. However, some really intelligent person decides to set fire to the last ladder. Zuko and the Avatar are forced to jump for the outer wall, but Zuko can't keep his grip, and they tumble to the ground just in front of the outer gate.
Dazedly shaking his head, Zuko struggles to his feet and draws his blades as the guards converge upon them. Four firebending guards (I trained with you! a tiny part of Zuko sobs upon seeing them, I sparred with you and you laughed when I beat you!) blast at them in unison, and Zuko is ready to deflect the flames with his blades when the Avatar spins them around and defends them with airbending.
"HOLD YOUR FIRE!"
The flames die away as Admiral Zhao himself strides forward, hands clasped behind his back as calm as can be. "The Avatar must be captured alive," he orders, scowling, but there's a triumphant light in his cold bronze eyes that Zuko immediately hates. Then his words hit, and Zuko immediately knows what to do.
Sorry, kid, just trying to get us out of here alive, he apologizes silently to the Avatar, as he crosses his blades under their chin, razor-sharp edges each a hairsbreadth from the delicate pale skin of their neck. The Avatar makes a strangled "ulp!" sound, and Zuko presses himself against their back and stares Zhao in the eye.
A vein throbs in the man's temple as he grits his teeth in frustration. "Open the gate," he grits out, after a moment of attempting to glare Zuko into submission. Compared to Mika without her morning black tea, the guy's a rank amateur.
"Admiral, what are you doing?" Colonel Shinu hisses from his position at Zhao's shoulder.
"Let them out," Zhao snaps. "NOW."
The gate creaks open behind them, and Zuko carefully walks backward, keeping his blades rock steady at the Avatar's neck. He doesn't take a single eye off of Zhao.
They're in the middle of the last crossroads before the forest when something zings through the air and everything abruptly goes dark.
+
Zuko had reported to the medbay at Dr. Atsuko's order, and the Chief Medical Officer of the Stronghold had ushered him into her office at the back of the ward.
"Zhao's just sent out Banli Squad to retrieve the Avatar," she'd said brusquely. "Are you ready? Do you have all of the supplies you need, all of the things you're going to take?"
I'm as ready as I'll ever be, Zuko had replied. The Commander gave the signal for everyone who's leaving to be ready to disappear after Banli gets back. I'll be meeting up with Kai at noon the day after the Avatar and I escape to get my bow and quiver from him, since I can't exactly carry them with me as the Blue Spirit. Are you leaving too?
Dr. Atsuko had nodded. "It's time," she'd said, and for once the steel had melted from her expression and she'd actually looked sad. "I've done all I can here, but it's time to go where I can do some real good."
Where will you go? Zuko had asked.
"Here and there," Dr. Atsuko had shrugged. "I've got options. A doctor, especially one with my skills, is always in demand. Before you take off, though, I've got something to teach you," and she'd handed him a Pai Sho tile, the Lotus.
Five hours later, Zuko had been leaving the mess hall after dinner when Banli Squad had paraded the Avatar through the Stronghold.
+
Zuko wakes up to early morning light filtering through tall trees, a full range of vision due to his mask being gone, and the Avatar sitting curled up in a little ball on top of a huge tree root. He also wakes up to a splitting headache, and bites back a groan that's half pain and half frustration. He doesn't have time for this, the Avatar's a fucking kid, and probably doesn't know any bending besides their native element, and Zuko somehow has to get them ready to… what, overthrow the Fire Lord? Get Zuko's throne back for him?
His temple throbs, and Zuko can't quite bite back the hiss that he makes as he sits up, rubbing his forehead.
"Oh, you're awake!" The Avatar exclaims, voice piercing in the stillness of the surrounding forest. Zuko winces, and thankfully the Avatar seems to notice, because their voice drops several levels of volume until they're almost but not quite whispering. "I never got to thank you last night for getting me out of there. That Zhao guy was kinda creepy. What's your name? I'm Aang."
My name's Zuko, Zuko signs, slow and sluggish with pain and the stiffness that comes with not cooling down properly after excessive exercise. What're your preferred pronouns? I don't want to assume anything.
The Avatar is watching him with huge gray eyes, and Zuko knows without them even opening their mouth that they have no idea what he just said.
Oh damn me to Koh's lair, he thinks, heart sinking. Not only does the spirits-damned Avatar not know any of the other elements, they don't know hand-language. Honestly, Zuko doesn't know why he'd assumed that they would, the Yuyan guard their language with the same ferocity that they hunt their quarries.
"Is that… talking? With your hands?" The Avatar asks, eyebrows sliding up the blue arrow tattoo to the sky. Their voice is hushed and full of wonder. "Can you teach me that?"
Ah, a yes or no question. Zuko nods, then gingerly gets up, glancing around for his mask and picking it up where it lies next to the bed of green leaves that he'd been resting on. His blades are there too, and Zuko huffs slightly in relief as he slings them across his back. He looks at the mask, noting the large scratch in the lacquer on the left side of the forehead. That must've been some shot, he reflects, and kind of wishes he'd been able to see it.
"Uh, so I gotta get some frozen wood frogs for my friends, 'cause they're really sick," the Avatar, Aang, says awkwardly. "You want to come along? Do you have anywhere else to go? Katara could probably give you something for your head, if it's hurting you."
Zuko tugs his braid out of his shirt, cracks his neck, and gestures for Aang to lead the way.

A Look At Stuff You Probably Never Heard Of: Parasite Eve (Movie)
Last year, I took a look at the Square Enix game, Parasite Eve. So this year, I’ll be taking a look at its prequel. Kinda. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the Parasite Eve movie.
Released on February 1st, 1997, Parasite Eve was directed by Masayuki Ochiai, who also directed two Ju-On (The Grudge) movies that never left Japan. It was produced in Japan by Toho (who also owns the Godzilla movies), and distributed in Japan by Fuji TV, but also distributed by ADV Films in America and by Fuji in Europe.
The movie is an adaptation of the science-fiction horror novel of the same name, written by pharmacologist and writer, Hideaki Sena. His job consists of him testing mitochondria with various drugs to see how they convert fatty acids into energy. He was inspired after seeing a documentary on mitochondria and wondered what if the mitochondria was sentient and were tired on the symbiotic relationship they were a part of.
Set in Japan, university professor and scientist, Toshiaki Nagashima, is greeted by his wife, Kiyomi, who wishes to celebrate their first anniversary as a married couple. However, he is unable to do so, as he is busy with work. But as Kiyomi is diving home, she gets into a car crash that leaves her brain dead. Ultimately, Toshiaki begrudgingly agrees to euthanize her. He is then met with a doctor named Takatsugu Yoshizumi, who informs him that Kiyomi was registered as an organ donor and requests her kidney, as his patient, Mariko Anzai, has been hospitalized with kidney failure. Toshiaki agrees, but in exchange, he wants Kiyomi’s liver, so he can cultivate her liver cells in an attempt to revive her. He refers to the cells as “Eve”. However, the cells reform into a being with Kiyomi’s face, known only as Eve, who wishes to destroy humanity and give birth to the Ultimate Being, whos birth would herald the end of all living creatures that require the mitochondria to live with the mitochondria themselves becoming the dominant species on the planet.
It’s a little hard to talk about a live action movie, since it’s not like it has graphics or anything to talk about. But what can be said is that cinematography is pretty interesting; case and point being when Kiyomi is driving and when she gets into the car crash. The acting is pretty decent... for the most part. And there are some interesting special effects too.
The movie also adapts the book pretty well for the most part and even expands on a few things, such as Toshiaki’s guilt regarding what happened to his wife and his sanity slowly slipping over the course of the film. However, it downplays the horror aspect of the story and instead focuses more on the science-fiction and the romance between Kyomi and Toshiaki.
So, now that we got through all of that, it’s time for my Final Recommendation: Never Let Go Of It||Get It||Hold Onto It||Try It||Consider It||Stay Away From It
Strange, isn’t it? I put high praise into the game, but put the film a bit lower. It’s fairly enjoyable, but the movie certainly isn’t for everyone. In fact, it can even be considered dated in some regards. But one of the biggest problems tends to be the acting in some regards. Main point being towards the end of the movie, when Eve sets a nurse on fire. The nurse simply stands in place and screams, not acting like someone whose on fire at all.
And I’m going to break my “No Spoiler” rule this time by also mentioning a difference between the film and book, which is also a downside. In the book, Mariko gives birth to the Ultimate Being after Eve dies of necrosis. But the “male” mitochondria within the Ultimate Being “courtesy” of Toshiaki, who was “raped” by Eve, who takes the form of Kiyomi, staged a rebellion, causing the Ultimate Being to switch between male and female. Toshiaki embraces his child in an attempt to control the psychokinetic-like outbursts from the child as it dies. In the process, the two merge and melt together. But in the film, while Toshiaki is still “raped” by Eve, who has Kiyomi’s form, Eve doesn’t die before transferring the sperm to Mariko. In the film, she takes Mariko from her hospital bed, planning to transfer the sperm to her. But at the roof of the hospital, Toshiaki speaks with Eve, who claims that she planned to have Kiyomi to meet with Toshiaki and have the two fall in love, so that her plan would work, setting Toshaki on fire bit by bit as he steps closer to her. Toshaki argues that he fell in love with her despite that, being in love with her before their “initial” meeting that Eve put her plan into action. This somehow allows Kiyomi to reclaim control from Eve and the two share a kiss as they burn to death in each other’s arms. But according to Masayuki, he was forced to make it a love story by the producers.
Before I end this, I want to draw attention to the fact that this is a prequel. Canonically, this is the first time Eve showed up to cause trouble. I previously mentioned Mariko Anzai, who is believed to be the exact same Mariko Brea, who was the mother of Aya Brea, the protagonist of the Parasite Eve games.
If you wish to watch the movie, you can view it here. However, I should warn you that there is a scene in which a nude Eve has sex with Toshaki and it goes on for a few minutes. There is also a scene in which you can see Kiyomi’s internal organs as her body is being operated on.
Goodness, this was quite lengthy. But it’s done now, so I’ll see you all next month. Hope you guys like heavy metal and all things rock!

Happily Ever After
Fandom: Irresistible Mistake Category: Angst / Fluff Character: Yukihisa Maki / Toshiaki Kijima / Shunichiro Tachibana OC / MC: Eriko Sato (from Glory Days) & Saichi (from Second Chances) Notes: This is base on my role play series- Glory Days and Second Chances: Yearsss after Eriko, Shun, Toshi and Maki have graduated, the three ended up working in the same company while Eriko traveled all over Asia for work.
This time, she’s back in town for a wedding.
FYI- My Shun is still single after his split with Midori and being dumped by Sachi who later married Toshi, you can read it here.
And if you are looking forward to an epilogue for this, it shall be PURE SMUT with Maki, if that were to happen of course.
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
Eriko Sato’s POV
“You look presentable,” I stare and convince myself in the mirror, “you can do this, Eriko.” Putting a pair of gold earrings that match my red off the shoulder bodycon dress and slipping into the same color heels before I grab my purse and get going.
I’m nervous yet still surprised that I’m invited, not that we haven’t moved on but it isn’t exactly easy either. We stay in touch all these years- working round our busy schedules and squeezing in a lunch or dinner date whenever I’m in town or random chitchat over the phone every now and again.
We have not forgotten each other, not in the slightest way. In all honesty, I don’t want him to be completely out of my life. We may not have ever dated but he’s always been there when I need him, listening to my problems and putting up with my craziness without ever judging or raising his eyebrows at me.
He’s forever understanding and forgiving, so now sitting in a cab and replaying our time together in the next twenty minutes seem to be the only sane way to prepare myself for the last time before I greet the stars of the day.
The venue is fairly nice, just the kind of church I imagine he’d like. And standing among a few guests outside for a few minutes, I take a deep breath, gathering, remembering, missing, grasping all the dear memories I hold of him and put them aside before my feet move up along the few heavy steps as a hand reaches the large mental handle first, “It’s a gentleman’s job to get the door for a lady.”
Oh, that voice! “And you still consider yourself a gentleman?” My smirk has creep from the corner of my lips before I even manage to turn and look at the man, “Why are you out here instead of waiting at the altar anyway?”
Gesturing his slender index finger against his lips, we quietly enter the church. “Shun is the best man, he has everything covered while I have others covered.”
“Gosh, seriously. Is it too much to ask for you to behave just for one single day?” Shaking my head with a half scoff and half scowl, I follow him to the fourth row.
“And is it so hard for you to wear black and not draw attention on someone’s else wedding day?”
We both crack a smile, the kind of comments that’d only be made by people who have known you long enough yet not at all offend you.
“Black is dull, at least on me anyway.” I am not sure why I bother with an answer that’s clearly not going to convince neither of us.
“He could easily spot you in this outfits, well I suppose that’s your whole point, isn’t it?”
Like a kid got caught, I tilt my head to the side in attempt to charm my way out of it, for old time sake really.
“You will always make me feel tight beneath my belt and you know it, Eri.” After exchanging a low chuckle and shoving his chest, I catch a glimpse of the groom and return him a smile and nod just before the wedding music begins.
The large oak doors at the back of the church are flung open and the bridesmaids walk sedately down the aisle towards the guests. Each wearing sky blue, spaghetti strap dresses, a flash of glistening white is seen at the end of the aisle. With excited whispers, the crowd stands and turns to watch the bride’s grand entrance. It takes a moment before I can see her fully and, when I do, she’s far more gorgeous than I expect- classy yet innocent like the girl next door, the perfect girl for my lone wolf friend.
This isn’t exactly the first wedding I attend but the first that has got my full attention, listening carefully to each word as the priest reads the vows, their I dos linger in my ears- knowing that from this day on he would be happy, at ease and well loved. Still captivated by the pleasing smile that’s spreading across his handsome face, not a hint of loneliness nor dark burden on his shoulders. He looks content and free, I’m happy for him, to finally have found the right person to give him the simple joy he seeks and to spend the rest of his life with.
Once outside the church, I bring along my gift and congratulate the bride and groom. “Oh my gosh, you must be Eriko! They talk about you all the time, I’m so glad you’d make it!”
Getting a compliment from the innocent and child like bride has made me blush a little but after declining her goodness of playing cupid within the minutes we’ve met, I admit that like Shunichiro- I’m also married to my job.
The bride and groom go back to greeting the rest of their guests, I watch from afar like I once did- the time he made me midnight pancakes, the disastrous college and heartbreaking charity ball, when he fell fast asleep on my bed, saying goodbye at airport, after he walked me back to the hotel each time I was in town- he seems different now, the semi guilty expression and dark wash like sadness that sometimes flicker within his eyes are no longer found on him.
“Do you regret it? You know… He loved you all these years?”
“So do I.” I sigh, “It hurts to love him but I still do, it’s just the way I feel.”
There’s a corner of my heart that belongs to him and I know whether I ever find someone else or be in love over and over again, that one little corner of my heart will always belong to him, Toshiaki Kijima.
“So would you like some company tonight, you know, to keep your mind off … someone?”
Finally allowing myself a smother little giggle, I spin around and pinch my persistent old friend. “You don’t give up, do you Yukihisa Maki?”
With the signature smirk on his face as he offers me his arm, I wrap mine around his and leave their happy ending behind.
Writer Notes: Before readers who have sent or plan to inbox me about what happened between Eri & Toshi- the plots / scenes are already done in my head but I currently have no plan to write them out yet. As for Riki and Kagari, I simply do not know.

Hm...I am interested (aka. I love royalty AUs), what's the story behind the royalty au for Soutaku you just posted? Like, how did the two met in this AU and why?
ohohoHOHO ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
(this is the post u mean i believe. im reposting the first image bc i Love it and sketching it is what inspired this entire mess, thanks past me)
THIS AU IS....maximum slow burn. It’s actually a fake marriage + royalty AU, with Prince Takumi getting engaged to Prince Souma, for the sake of tying peace between both countries.
A super general overview is that King Jouichirou and King Toshiaki (the headcanon Aldini dad) have been struggling for the entirety of their rules to successfully have a peace treaty signed between their Kingdoms, respectively the coastal Kingdom of Sea and the landlocked Kingdom of Sky, but have failed bc the previous rulers’ influence of war and chaos linger too strongly.
In total deus ex machina, there used to be a legendary prophecy about destined soulmates from each country possessing eyes the colour of the opposite land that will fall in love at first sight and bring an end to the era of calamity with their love, oh boy i wonder who those lovebirds could be :”))) Honestly this prophecy is old as ass and hardly anyone even remembers this, but the Kings realise this is. Probably their last hope in trying to get the mass public in accepting peace. It’s a last ditch effort and they Know.
SO. Takumi(~22yo) volunteers to marry Souma(same age lmao) and they’re both about as happy about a political marriage as the next guy, but they’re willing to do this for their countries. They don’t expect anything out of each other because this is a political marriage and they’ve...never met before this whole engagement, so there’s Tons of tension and antagonism. But they’re still expected to put up a loving, affectionate front before everyone (except family) because ~*prophecy*~ so. congrats. this is their life now. yaaay.
Tons of heavy, heavy power play, ironic praises and completely unironic body worship (plus some priestly problems and awkward situations mixed in), BUT so as to not spoil anything bc i miiight turn this into a multichap fic in the future (idk tbh lmao) this is the basic outline !! ive been wanting to write a fake married/dating trope or royalty AU for the Longest time now and this is like. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. hooray !!
(although i do have another prince/witch AU i want to write before this one and then there’s another prince/rogue AU i have i mind and thEN there’s mafia AU and muted screaming. basically i create AUs faster than i write/draw them, congrats 2 me, how am i living,)

Camaraderie
Part 4 of the Dragon of the Yuyan
Read on AO3 | Series Masterpost
Spring is in the air, as Kai likes to “sing”. The accursed snow is gone, and each day is a little warmer than the one before. Zuko barely notices.
The winter has flown by once he began training with his squad and with Master Ryoichi in earnest. He had begun measuring time not in hours or days or weeks, but in how many pushups he could do at a time, how far he could draw his bow to his anchor point, and how much longer it would be before the Master would introduce a new form. Nobody treats him like he's useless, even if he can't yet shoot with any degree of consistent accuracy. Kai and Jiyoti and Mika are always down to watch him demonstrate his firebending, and the awe and excitement on their faces makes Zuko feel like he can do anything. Even if Commander Toshiaki's dialed back his "missions" to test the Stronghold's security, Zuko's too busy training with his squad, joking around with Kai, and helping out with the komodo-rhinos and the messenger hawks to really care. He's pretty sure of his place with the Archers now, for the most part, and if Agni forbid he does manage to get kicked out, he can mostly take care of himself now. It would hurt, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.
It doesn’t register what day it is until he gets down to the mess for breakfast and sees the calendar. He freezes like a fox-antelope facing down a saber-toothed moose lion. His scar burns.
It’s been a year.
At noon today, it will be a year to the hour that Zuko begged his father for mercy on the floor of the Agni Kai arena, and got a face full of fire for his weakness.
Zuko can’t breathe.
A hand lands gently on his shoulder, and Zuko flinches with his entire body like he hasn’t done in weeks, in months. The hand shifts like it’s going to pull away, then resettles, firmer yet still gentle. Another hand taps between his shoulder blades, waits, then pats, waits, then pats with more force, until Zuko takes a tearing, ragged, gasping breath. The hand on his back rubs up and down his spine, soothing as Zuko wheezes though the buzzard-wasp drone of panic engulfing his body.
After what feels like an eternity, Zuko comes back to himself to find all the members of Chihese Squad gathered around him. Mika has him wrapped loosely in her arms, one hand on his shoulder and the other rubbing his back. Kai stands close enough to touch, dark Yuyan eyes wide and and worried. Jiyoti and Captain Hiroki are flanking the trio, the tension in their bodies screaming don’t come anywhere near us!”.
Kai sees him looking around and smiles. Back with us, Danger Noodle? He signs.
Zuko swallows against his parched throat and nods.
You wanna talk about it, kid? Captain Hiroki asks. When Zuko shakes his head sharply, the older man nods. Alright then, let’s eat before we’re late for PT.
The last thing Zuko wants to do is eat, but being hungry makes him anxious, so he follows his squad to the tables where the mess staff lay out food. When Mika shoots him a Look, Zuko sighs and grabs a bowl of okayu, about the only thing he can stomach at times like these.
At the table, Jiyoti passes around cups of tea. The scent of jasmine nearly brings tears to Zuko’s eyes, and he can’t bring himself to do more than clutch the cup and ache with longing for his uncle’s calm, fragrant tea room in the palace.
A bao appears under his nose, and Zuko looks up to see Kai holding it out with a small, sad smile on his face. He places it beside Zuko’s untouched bowl of okayu and signs, You need to eat something, Zuko. Come on, it’s sweet bean, your favorite.
Zuko can’t say no to that face, even though his stomach is writhing like a nest of two-headed rat-vipers. He nibbles on the bao while the rest of the squad signs over his head. For once, he doesn't even try to keep up with the conversations, just keeps his eyes glued to his bao. Once that's gone, he slumps down, feeling like his whole body is wrapped in iron plating, making it nearly impossible to move. Someone scoots his okayu closer, and with what feels like a monumental effort, he starts spooning it up in tiny, slow bites.
He's halfway through the bowl when he just can't eat any more, and pushes it quietly away. Kai rubs his shoulder, and Zuko leans into the touch. His scar doesn't burn as bad anymore, but he still feels numb to the rest of his body, and Kai's touch is like a strong ray of sunshine in a frozen wasteland.
As one, the squad rises from the table, with Zuko half a step behind. They walk, Kai's arm now wrapped firmly around Zuko's shoulders as though to keep him from floating away, and Zuko doesn't really pay attention to where they're going until they're on the training fields.
The movements of the conditioning and strengthening exercises ease some of the weight on his body and bring some awareness back to his mind, so he feels almost normal by the time the Troop moves on to the archery range. The repetitive aim-pull-loose of shooting is very soothing. He's still learning how to aim consistently, so his arrows are a bit all over the place, but they're all in the target, so that's improvement, he guesses.
The time flies, and soon it's time to stop for lunch. Zuko's appetite has reemerged, and he manages an entire bowl of spicy noodles, much to his squad's relief.
Afterward, he heads over to where the firebenders do their training. He's the only one in the Stronghold who's still technically "in training" under Master Ryoichi, so his lessons are one-on-one, but there's always firebenders in the practice yard doing their own training. Today the practice yard is much less crowded than normal, and the people training there shoot him friendly smiles or nods but otherwise keep their distance, which Zuko appreciates. He's still feeling off from whatever happened this morning, and he just wants to do what he needs to do and be done with today.
Master Ryoichi raises an eyebrow at him, but doesn't comment on whatever is concerning about his appearance. They go through warm ups, review past forms, and the Master drills him on a new sequence that seems to twist his muscles up in knots. The Master's teaching style reminds him quite a lot of Uncle Iroh's––he only very rarely shouts, usually because something really dangerous is happening, but is otherwise soft-spoken and shockingly gentle for a Firebending Master. He only touches Zuko when he absolutely has to, to correct his stances and forms, and is positive and encouraging with him, something the palace masters Before had never been.
They end the training session with sparring, which Zuko loves. When he first started training with Master Ryoichi, sparring was a terrifying concept–– the palace masters never missed the opportunity to use it to force him to meet impossible expectations, and then berate him when he inevitably failed. But Master Ryoichi never expects more from Zuko than he can give, and has slowly made Zuko realize that sparring can be fun. The first (and so far only) time Zuko had managed to put the Master on the ground, the older man had grinned and congratulated him on his clever technique. The last time he'd won against one of the palace masters, the man had berated him for half an hour on how the win had been a fluke and how Zuko was a disgrace to firebenders everywhere.
This spar starts out simple, with the Master sending Zuko fireballs to practice his blocks and redirects, and Zuko returning fire with the intention of breaking the Master's rooted stance. Every so often the Master will call out tips and corrections and encouragement, and Zuko will do his best to comply, feeling a grin stretch across his face. They start coming in closer, using the fire-daggers technique that the Master had taught him a few weeks ago, a more advanced move that the palace masters would never have considered teaching Zuko Before.
Zuko gets distracted wondering if he could possibly firebend with his dao, and suddenly finds himself flat on his back on the ground, Master Ryoichi's flame-wreathed fist inches from his face. The Master's face morphs in a split second into Father's, sneering and cold, and Zuko's scar bursts back to life as his eyes squeeze shut.
He can't help himself.
Zuko screams.
He hears voices, feels hands on his shoulders, head, back, but Zuko is lost in fire and pain and terror so complete that he's blind and deaf to everything but his pulse roaring in his ears. He can't breathe, and his heart feels like it's going to punch its way right out of his chest, and all he can think is not again not again not again Father please not again NOT AGAIN!
A hand touches his face, and Zuko cries out and blindly swipes fire through the air. Someone shouts, and he whimpers and curls his body up tight, waiting for a beating, for a burn, for something that he knows is going to happen and is going to hurt. He's crying, sobbing in terror, and his whole body is shaking like a sapling in a wind storm, and his scar hurts like the day he got it, a year ago today.
He doesn't know how long he's like this before the waves of terror ebb away, leaving him limp and exhausted on the ground. He has a headache the size of Ba Sing Se, his scar still hurts like when it was fresh, and his shoulders and neck are sore from tension.
"Back with us, Cadet?" Dr. Atsuko's voice sounded like it was coming from far away, and Zuko opened his eyes to find her kneeling primly just out of arm's reach on the ground, right in his line of sight. Kai and Captain Hiroki are sat on either side of her, with Mika and Jiyoti just behind them. Kai is dead white under his Yuyan tan, and Jiyoti's eyes are wide and watery, while Mika and Captain Hiroki just look grim and worried.
"Master Ryoichi sent for me about an hour ago, after he couldn't get you to respond to him," she continues, dark bronze eyes assessing him keenly. "Can I check you over?"
Zuko gulps. He's not sure how he feels about being touched right now, but he's also a little weirded out that he apparently lost an hour. No wonder he's so sore.
"I'll be gentle," Dr. Atsuko assures him, and actually smiles. It looks a little strange coming from the stoic CMO, but it's small and a little lopsided and softens her face incredibly, and Zuko is immediately reminded of his mother and his heart aches.
He nods, just barely, and Dr. Atsuko's cool hands touch various spots on his body with exquisite gentleness. Zuko's skin still crawls though, and he shuts his eyes and tries not to flinch.
Snapping fingers make him open them again, and he looks at Kai, who's still pale but has a smaller, comforting version of his usual broad grin on his face.
Good to see you, Danger Noodle, he signs slowly, making sure that Zuko can see each movement of his hands. You had us worried there for a bit.
Zuko's heart sinks. He really screwed up this time, making his squad worry. Doggedly ignoring the stiffness in his arms, he balls a fist and rubs it weakly in a circle on his chest.
"You have absolutely nothing to be sorry about, kid," Dr. Atsuko declares sharply. "You had a really bad panic attack, and you don't need any additional stress right now. Captain Hiroki is going to take you back to the dorm and you are going straight to bed. This idiot––" she reaches back and smacks Kai on the back of the head, causing the older teen to pout "––is going to keep his hands still if he can't keep his foot out of his mouth."
Captain Hiroki leans forward. Can I help you up, Cadet?
Zuko doesn't really understand why people keep asking if they can touch him, but he appreciates the warning, so he nods slowly and takes the hand that the Captain extends to him. The older man easily pulls him to his feet, but Zuko's knees feel like water and don't want to hold his weight. He lets out an undignified squeak as he starts to fall, but Kai is there immediately, looping one of Zuko's arms around his neck and wrapping one of his own around Zuko's waist. When Zuko blinks at him in surprise, Kai just gives him a small, apologetic smile. Mika slips into place on Zuko's other side, and the pair of them basically carry Zuko back to the dorm, following Captain Hiroki who seems to be clearing their path with the force of his presence alone.
They make it back to the Yuyan dorm and tuck Zuko into his bunk. Jiyoti spreads Zuko's koala-sheep wool cloak over him, then his regular blanket, because the entire squad knows how much Zuko hates being cold.
Hey, Zuko, can I sit with you? Asks Mika. Zuko nods, a little confused. His squad has guard duty soon, shouldn't they be getting ready?
Mika settles herself beside Zuko and drops a hand onto his head. Zuko's hair is nearly long enough for a real topknot, and Mika strokes it like he's a pygmy puma kitten. Zuko freezes in shock before melting into the touch. He hasn't had someone do this since before Mom left.
Jiyoti asks if she can sit on his other side, and he nods vaguely, too busy enjoying Mika's petting to pay any real attention. Kai doesn't even ask before he clambers onto the foot of the bunk, sitting in lotus position and grinning widely at all of them.
Damn, Danger Noodle, getting all the ladies! He signs. Jiyoti and Mika glare at him, and Captain Hiroki smacks him on the back of the head.
I'm going to report to Commander Toshiaki that we're going to need to be taken off duty rotation for at least today, the Captain announces. Anybody need anything from the mess?
Zuko needs fire-flakes, Kai declares. Zuko considers kicking him, but in the end decides against it, because really, he's not wrong on a normal day, but right now he can't even think about eating. Jiyoti's glare intensifies though, and she kicks him instead.
Stop being obnoxious, Kai! She demands.
Here's a wild notion, Mika signs, turning a deadpan look on Kai. Zuko immediately misses her hand in his hair, but Jiyoti takes over almost seamlessly, scritching gently along his hairline behind his unscarred ear in a way that makes him melt and want to purr like a pygmy puma. How about we ask Zuko what he needs?
What an excellent suggestion, Sergeant, Captain Hiroki replies. Cadet Zuko? Do you need anything to eat or drink?
It takes everything Zuko has, but he limply manages to sign, Water?
Right away, Cadet, the Captain replies, a small smile crossing his face. I'll be right back.
Zuko sinks back into his bunk, Jiyoti and Mika snug against him on each side. He's so tired, but his head is clearer than it's been all day, like that panic attack had swept away all of the tension and fear he'd been carrying since he saw the calendar in the mess hall. He closes his eyes and lets the warmth of his squad around him sink into his bones.
After a while, someone gently pokes his arm, and he opens his eyes to find Commander Toshiaki sitting beside his bunk, sharing a pot of tea with Mika and Captain Hiroki while Kai and Jiyoti bicker. The Commander's eyes meet his own, and the older man puts his cup down.
Just wanted to check in on you after hearing Captain Hiroki's and Dr. Atsuko's reports, he signs, slow and calm. How are you feeling, Cadet?
Zuko takes inventory, finds himself still tired but not as blah as before, and shrugs. Mika pours him some water from a nearby pitcher, which feels incredible on his parched throat.
Hey Danger Noodle, up for some fire-flakes? Kai asks, holding out a small pouch.
"Don't you give him that shit, Private!" Dr. Atsuko's voice snaps out like a whip, and even though it makes Zuko jump, the way Kai jerks and flails and drops the bag of fire-flakes makes Zuko grin. Kai pouts first at Zuko, then at Dr. Atsuko.
Sorry Doc, Kai signs petulantly.
"You'll be even more sorry if he eats those and then throws them back up on you," Dr. Atsuko replies as she sets a tray down on the table between Zuko's bunk and Kai's. Sitting on the tray is a small copper pot and a bowl. "If he is ready, he's going to start with some broth first so we don't shock his system."
Zuko catches the scent of the broth and his stomach immediately growls like a tigerdillo. The entire squad and Commander Toshiaki all grin, and even Dr. Atsuko cracks a smile as she ladles broth into the bowl.
"That's definitely a good sign," she comments as she holds the bowl out. Zuko scrambles to sit up, and eagerly takes the bowl from her. It's just a simple chicken broth, probably the base for whatever the mess cooks are going to serve for dinner tonight, but it's warm and delicious, and he feels more normal after drinking it than he has all day.
Kai starts telling a story about his first encounter with a komodo-rhino, exaggerating his signs and making all kinds of stupid faces that has the whole squad grinning and laughing silently. Zuko finishes his broth and snuggles down between Mika and Jiyoti, watching Kai and then Captain Hiroki tell stories and feeling wonderfully warm and safe.
And then Master Ryoichi steps into the dorm, and stops a few feet away from Zuko's bunk. Zuko immediately tenses upon seeing him, and Mika and Jiyoti both notice. Mika's hand goes to the knife she always has at the small of her back, and Jiyoti wraps an arm around Zuko's shoulders.
The Master forms the Flame and bows deeply. "I only wish to convey my apologies to Cadet Zuko, and wish him a speedy recovery," he says. "I should have known better than to hold fire so close to such a terrible wound. Please forgive me, my brave pupil."
Zuko blinks, but nods hesitantly.
Master Ryoichi favors him with a small smile. "Thank you, Pupil Zuko. You honor me. I hope to see you on the training field tomorrow."
Kai jumps to his feet, eyes narrowed in fury, stance wide and shoulders back in indignation. Are you kidding me?! That's crazy! He shouldn't ever have to firebend again if he doesn't want to! Not if it makes him scream and cry for an hour like he did today!
Captain Hiroki snaps his fingers, and Kai snaps to attention, entire body rigid. Private, you are out of line! Apologize to Master Ryoichi at once!
"It's alright, Captain, he's only trying to protect his friend," Master Ryoichi soothes. "Private Kai, what happened today was unfortunate, but one cannot let fear dictate what one does or doesn't do. Cadet Zuko is a firebender. This is a truth that cannot be changed or circumvented. The sooner he faces and overcomes that which makes him afraid, the better off he will be."
It's okay, Kai, Zuko signs. He's touched by his best friend's protectiveness, but Master Ryoichi is right. He can't have a panic attack anytime a little fire gets too close to his face.
He turns to his firebending teacher and bows with the Flame. I will report for training at our regular time, Sifu Ryoichi.
Master Ryoichi grins. "I'm honored by your trust in me, Pupil Zuko. I will see you then. Rest well."
Goodnight, Master Ryoichi, the rest of the squad sign in unison, and the firebending master bows and leaves.
Hey Zuko, did I ever tell you about the time I put an eel in my older brother's bed? Kai asks.
No, tell me! Zuko demands, snuggling down again between Mika and Jiyoti.
Well, it all started because he'd threatened to braid my bowstrings into a fishing net…
Zuko grins as Kai mimics the snooty look on his older brother's face, pretending to scold the younger Kai for spending too much time with his bow. Jiyoti shudders with disgust as he describes wrestling the eel into his brother's futon, and Mika hides her smirk behind a badly constructed expression of disapproval. Captain Hiroki just sighs and keeps Zuko's water cup full.
Dinner time comes and goes, but his squad never leaves his side, until the signal for bunk-time sounds. One by one, his squad members leave to get ready for bed, but they always wait for the absent member to come back before the next person leaves, and soon they're all in their night-clothes but otherwise look like they haven't moved in hours. When the signal for lights out sounds, Jiyoti and Mika reluctantly head to their own bunks, but Kai stubbornly refuses, laying down on top of the blankets and wrapping Zuko in his strong arms. Zuko falls asleep to his best friend's snores.

Part 3 of the Dragon of the Yuyan
Read on AO3 | Series Masterpost
Zuko has been living in Pohuai Stronghold for two months, and would very much like winter to be over now, please.
It had snowed a few weeks ago, just enough to cover the top of one's foot when one stepped in it, and Zuko had hated it at first sight. There was just something unnatural about how Koh-damned cold it was, forcing his inner flame to burn hotter in his chest to compensate. Most of the snow is gone now, only little piles of dirty slush left in the corners of the yards where the weak winter sun doesn't quite reach, but it is now somehow colder than it had been when the snow had first arrived. None of the other Archers are firebenders, and Zuko honestly has no idea how they cope—Kai actually seems to like it, but Kai is also mildly insane and not to be trusted.
Zuko is now triply glad that he took the Commander's deal. He gets three meals a day (plus access to all the snacks he could ever want—all he has to do is blink and people shove food at him), he'll be learning from the most badass soldiers in the entire world (although he has yet to actually start training—Dr. Atsuko says he needs to gain more weight before she'll let him even touch a bow, and Dr. Atsuko is really scary so he doesn't want to cross her), and he gets Agni-blessed warm clothes (Zuko will bite anyone who touches his koala-sheep wool cloak—Zheng and the twins make fun of him for his attachment to it, but Zuko ignores them with the ease of someone who literally couldn’t care less). And all Zuko has to do is figure out new and interesting ways of getting past the Stronghold’s security, like the voyage through the ventilation system he’d taken last week that had allowed him to access the single most secure prisoner holding cell in the entire complex without even Captain Katsuro, leader of Banli Squad and the oldest and most experienced member of the Troop, knowing where he was.
Considering that two months ago he’d been staring starvation in the face, Zuko feels that maybe the luck that he’d used up just by being born is starting to come back.
Now if only winter would end.
Zuko is sitting with Kai and Jiyoti at breakfast in the mess, watching with increasing skepticism as Kai discourses the merits of arrows made out of ice, of all things. He’s neglecting his bao, and Zuko waits until Jiyoti distracts him with a salient point—how would one make ice arrows without waterbenders?—before swiping one. Mmm, sweet bean paste.
Kai pouts at him when he realizes what has happened, but Zuko is distracted by Commander Toshiaki coming their way.
Privates, Zuko, good morning, he greets them.
Good morning, Commander, they sign in unison.
Zuko, you need to report to Dr. Atsuko in the medical wing when you finish breakfast, the Commander informs him.
Zuko nods. Yes, sir.
Commander Toshiaki nods, the faintest trace of a smile playing at his stern expression, and Zuko feels like a million gold pieces. The Commander had been impressed with his breaking into the secure cell, and Zuko can’t wait to impress him again on his next “mission” to test the Stronghold’s security. He can only hope that nobody’s too disappointed when he inevitably proves how much of a failure he is at archery and non-bending hand-to-hand. He’s already resigned himself to never completing his firebending training, since the Yuyan are all non-benders. He’ll just have to hope that he never gets into a situation where firebending is his only weapon. He wonders if the Commander will let him continue learning the dao, since it’s a non-bending form of combat.
He still needs to be cleared by Dr. Atsuko though, so after Commander Toshiaki signs for them to carry on, and he steals Kai’s other bao (and ducks the listless protesting swipe the older boy aims at his head), Zuko heads over to the medical wing.
For once, the CMO seems pleased to see him, and within moments Zuko is stripped to his underwear and standing on a scale. He tucks his hands in his armpits and shivers in the chilly air of the medical wing.
“Good news, you’re just on the right side of healthy weight for a boy your age and height,” Dr. Atsuko declares briskly. She allows him to step down and get dressed while she scribbles on the scroll that contains his medical information.
Does that mean I can start training? He asks, smiling hopefully.
Dr. Atsuko rolls her eyes. “Yes, yes, you can start training, put that look away, you brat,” she grouses. “But don’t overdo it, understand? If I see you in here because you did something stupid, I’ll have Toshiaki triple the time you spend on the bench for recovery.”
Zuko nods rapidly as Dr. Atsuko scribbles on a small square of paper and rolls it up. “Take this to Toshiaki,” she orders, handing the note to him. “And tell the Commander that I’ll have his hide if he breaks you in ways I can’t fix.”
Zuko has absolutely no intention of telling the Commander that; he’s not a complete idiot, no matter how stupid Father and Azula and his tutors and combat instructors thought he was. He knows perfectly well that he’s exactly one screw-up away from being tossed out of the Stronghold on his ass, Zheng and the twins never let him forget it. Better to keep his mouth shut and his hands still unless spoken to directly—he’ll likely have fewer bruises for doing so when they do finally get sick of him and kick him out.
The sentiment is appreciated, though. Dr. Atsuko is scary (not quite as scary as Azula—it’s doubtful that anyone’s as scary as Azula except maybe Father—but Dr. Atsuko is close), but she cares in her own way. Zuko forms the Flame and bows, she scoffs and waves him off, and he departs.
His grin hurts his face, especially where the muscle of his cheek wrinkles the stiffened scar tissue of his burn. He doesn’t care, though—he can finally start training with the Troop, instead of watching from the side like someone’s useless kid brother! He can’t wait to tell Kai!
But first he has to find Commander Toshiaki. At this time of the morning, the Troop is usually on the target range, working on speed drills.
Commander Toshiaki is exactly where Zuko thought he would be, along with the rest of the Troop. He presents the scroll to the Commander, who favors him with a quietly pleased expression.
This is excellent news, he declares. He then assigns Zuko to Chihese Squad for PT and weapons training. Zuko and Kai exchange grins, and Zuko ignores the ferocious glare Zheng sends him.
Captain Hiroki, Chihese Squad’s leader, looks Zuko up and down. Ever touch a weapon before, kid? He asks, and Zuko can see the sarcasm in the way his hip is cocked, his half-lidded eyes, and the smirk lurking just below the surface of his stoically flat mouth.
Something about him reminds Zuko of Azula when she was fishing for something to torment him with, and his spine snaps straight. I studied the dual dao for three years with Master Piandao before my father demanded I stop, he answers, keeping his hands and expression tightly under control. Father forbidding him from continuing his studies with the Master is a memory almost as painful as that of the Agni Kai, but he powers through it, refusing to let this potential Azula-replacement have any kind of ammunition against him. My Uncle helped me continue learning, as well as helping me learn other blade techniques. Such as this.
As fast as thought, Zuko draws his pearl dagger, flips it to grasp by the tip of the blade, and throws it handle-first at the closest archery target. It hits a fraction of an inch off of dead center, buried to the hilt. The target is at least twenty feet away.
Kai looks like Summer Solstice has come early. Mika and Jiyoti are smirking. Zheng is audibly grinding his teeth, dark eyes narrow and furious. Captain Hiroki looks… impressed.
The Captain walks over to the target, pulls out the dagger, and examines it as he walks back. Zuko watches like an eagle-hawk, but all Captain Hiroki does is look it over, shine the blade on the sleeve of his tunic, and hand it back to Zuko, who immediately tucks it into the sheath in his belt.
Very nicely done, he signs, all traces of sarcasm gone from his face and body. And quick, that’ll serve you well with a good set of real throwing knives. Why did your father make you stop learning from Piandao? I thought he was supposed to be the best swordmaster in the Fire Nation.
My father didn't like Piandao, and believed that weapons were beneath a firebender's dignity, Zuko replies, and doesn't miss the sneer that crosses Zheng's face. Annoyance churns in his gut, but Zuko's been ignoring Zheng's sneers and jibes since he was able to understand the Yuyan hand-language, and he's not about to break that streak.
A firebender, Captain Hiroki signs, almost absentmindedly, hairless eyebrows furrowed in thought.
I'm not very good, Zuko shrugs.
It seems as though Zheng can no longer hold his peace. You can't possibly be going through with this, Cap! He signs, fury in every line of his body, his hands flying so fast that Zuko can just barely keep up. He's a thief! He should be shipped back to the Home Islands in chains, not be trained in our ways like he's actually one of us!
Shut up, Zheng! Kai's hands snap out. Don't pretend you're not just jealous that Zuko's better at shadow walking at fourteen than you are at twenty!
Why would I be jealous of a spirits-damned street rat? Zheng replies, sneering. He's obviously lying about studying under Piandao, wanting the Captain to fawn over him the way the Commander does, while all he's doing is using his ridiculous street rat tricks to make it seem like he's actually useful and not planning on selling us all out to the closest dirt-eater forces––
Zuko can't take it anymore. He's many things: a failure, a soft-hearted weakling, a useless embarrassment to his father and family. But he is here now in this new life because he believed, and still believes, that it is wrong to sacrifice loyal subjects of the Fire Nation as battle fodder. The idea that he could be a traitor to his people burns even worse than Father's fire-whips, or the handful of flames he'd held to Zuko's face.
He breathes, and exhales fire. The force of his rage produces a plume of reddish gold flame that roars toward Zheng like a stampeding komodo-rhino, causing everyone to jump back to avoid being burned.
Zheng is white under his Yuyan tan. Kai once again looks like the Summer Solstice has come early, with his birthday next. Mika's eyes are wide, and Jiyoti is practically hiding behind the older woman. Captain Hiroki looks thunderous, but before he can even move his hands, Zuko is already signing.
You don't know a damn thing about me, you giant piece of shit. His entire body is trembling, he’s so angry he feels like he’ll actually burst into flames. He doesn't even care that he might get kicked out for this. Zheng's been a boarcupine quill in his side since Commander Toshiaki and Chihese Squad had pinned him to the storeroom wall, and Zuko is done. I stole so that I wouldn't starve, because I was dumped in the middle of Koh-damned nowhere with the clothes on my back and a single useless knife, and I didn't even make it out of the Stronghold before I got caught anyway. I was going to die. I was supposed to die, but the Commander decided to let me live because he thought I would be useful. And I will never be able to repay him for that, for giving me a home and a new life, so I will stay here and learn everything I can and be as useful as I can possibly be, and you can shut up and stay the fuck out of my way!
He can feel the force of his glare in the pressure on his temples and the ache in his scar where his left eyebrow used to be, and the expression must be something because even Captain Hiroki seems reluctant to get close to him.
A hand lands gently on his shoulder, and Zuko flinches hard before whirling around to face the new threat, which is—
Kai, with an easy smile on his face, though his dark eyes are pained. Come on, he signs, let’s go to Master Arata and get you kitted out. Cap can deal with Zheng.
Kai leads him away, and Zuko glances back to see Captain Hiroki turning on a still white-faced Zheng.
Master Arata, the bowmaker for the Yuyan Archers, takes one look at Zuko and gives him the one bow with the single lightest draw weight in the entire Stronghold. Kai laughs himself sick as Zuko tries and fails to draw the bowstring back to his chin.
The Commander finds them in one of the training areas used by the regular Army companies that are stationed at the Stronghold. Kai is showing Zuko the strengthening and conditioning exercises the Yuyan use as part of their archery training, and Zuko recognizes many of them from both firebending and sword training, so they're in the middle of a planking contest when boots appear in Zuko's vision. He falls flat on his face when he realizes just who those boots belong to.
He and Kai both snap to attention, but Zuko can't look anywhere but at the ground, shaking as he awaits the Commander's punishment for firebending at Zheng. His shoulders ache with tension. He wishes the Commander would just hit him and get it over with.
Boots reappear in his vision, and Zuko squeezes his eyes shut and braces for the impact.
And nothing happens. Slowly, the fuzzy buzz of panic enveloping Zuko like a suffocating blanket falls away, and after a few moments he gathers every scrap of courage he possesses and opens his eyes.
The Commander is crouching in front of him, his head level with Zuko's chest, looking up at him with calm dark gray eyes. In this position, Zuko is head and shoulders taller, instead of the Commander looming over him, and he can't understand why the Commander would do this because it has to be absolutely demeaning for the leader of one of the world's best strike forces to take such a position before a useless idiot child like him––
Peace, Cadet Zuko, Commander Toshiaki signs slowly, expression serene.
Oh. Duh. As if Zuko needed another reminder that he's an idiot.
Captain Hiroki has informed me of your altercation with Private Zheng, the Commander continues. As the instigator of the incident, Private Zheng has been reprimanded and assigned a punishment detail. He has also been transferred to Banli Squad, per recommendation from Captain Hiroki and Sergeant Mika. However, firebending at someone outside of training scenarios or active combat is forbidden here in the Stronghold, by order of Colonel Shinu, and I'm afraid that means that I need to give you a punishment detail as well.
I understand, sir, Zuko signs haltingly.
You are to report to the komodo-rhino barn half an hour after dawn for the next two weeks, where you will perform tasks assigned by Stablemaster Guo until the mess opens for breakfast, the Commander declares.
Zuko blinks. He can't have understood that correctly. The Commander wants him to help take care of the komodo-rhinos… as a punishment?
But he has definitely learned to hold his tongue in front of superiors, and has probably pushed his luck enough for the next year, so he simply signs Understood, sir, and bows with the Flame.
I have also spoken to the Stronghold's firebending master, and he is happy to take you on as a student, Commander Toshiaki adds. You will report to him at dawn every day after your punishment detail is complete. He wished me to inform you that he understands if you have gotten lax in your meditations in the recent past, but he expects you to resume them immediately, so that you are well in the habit once your training resumes.
For the second time in as many moments, Zuko is shocked. He honestly hadn't expected to be allowed to continue his firebending training, and he could admit that a small part of himself had been just a tiny bit relieved. Before, even with Uncle's intervention, firebending training had not been a pleasant activity. No one had dared to physically harm the Fire Prince, but Zuko knew full well how the palace masters compared him to Father, to Uncle Iroh, to Azula, and never really seemed to care if he hurt himself in the process of trying to prove himself worthy of them.
But now, there's no one to compare himself to other than the soldiers who bend, and the master who oversees them. Anyone to whom he might try to prove himself wouldn't care about his firebending, because they don't bend themselves. Zuko isn't the Fire Prince, the Crown Prince, anymore, he doesn't have anyone's boots to fill but his own.
And that is a very exciting prospect.
So he grins widely at the Commander and signs Yes sir!
