To those of you who have cats, and kittens specifically:
Do you have any recommendations for Must Have items at home?
Any toys, supplies, etc that you think are super helpful?
This is not my first time living with cats, but it is my first time being responsible for the cats, and I’ve never lived with kittens! I’m doing the research to prepare but I also like to hear people’s feedback on what they really like!
Thank you!

While logically I know I'm making progress with the cats I still constantly feel like it could be better. I feel like every two steps forward goes at least one step back. Every time I feel like we have several good encouraging moments there's suddenly a fit of hissing and almost snarling I have to break up. I know it's only been two weeks and cats take awhile to get along but good god, some days it's so hard just to snatch some time to myself between making sure they don't get into a fight while I'm trying to make them get along..

I read a tip about leaving a cat carrier out like a bed so the cat's not scared of it, making it easier to get the cat into the carrier for trips/emergencies/vet visits. So I put a nice comfy blanket in the bottom of it, and left it open in a corner by the door. Today Oscar voluntarily curled up in it for a nap and self-grooming. I'd say that tip's working out well.

*fixed version* why doesn’t machete show as much affection as Vasco?
He's just a lot more reserved and cautious person in general. The environments he grew up in were strict and religious, he was raised by monks and started his priest training at a young age. Expressing and receiving endearment doesn't come naturally to him because he doesn't have much previous experience on it. He understands approval and respect and knows how to seek those, but affection might be something he never even considered as a thing he should want or that could perhaps be available for him.
Vasco's primary love languages are physical touch and words of affirmation, which are very direct, active and visible ways to communicate fondness. I think Machete veers more towards acts of service and quality time (as well as sharing interests/infodumping). Most of the time he tries to show Vasco that he cares by being thoughtful, attentive, loyal and helpful. He's used to needing to feel useful so that people think he's worthy of keeping around. Over time he does open up a lot, their wavelengths even out and he gets more confidently touchy-feely.

Can I fastforward my first time cat-owner experience several months to the part where both my cats are adjusted to the house and mostly to each other and I'm not running the anxiety gambit whenever kitty 2 does something weird? Cause I'd really appreciate that. And I'd probably sleep better at night.

Tilda the cat allows me to pet her now, a year and a half later... it must be done in a strict ritual: we must be in my closed room, i must be sitting on my chair and let my hand hang down so she can rub against it. then i can pet her a little, but only her head.
