Chicago avant-vaporwave artist shares another taste of upcoming LP for Hausu Mountain Fire-Toolz has been one of the most exciting names in experimental electronic music over the last few years. Armed with dreamy vaporwave atmospherics, pummeling rapid-fire beats and shrieking vocal dissonance, the Chicago-based artist has impressed on a variety of albums, including last year’s lush and expansive Field Whispers (Into The Crystal Palace). Today she shares a galvanizing video for brand new song “Rainbow Bridge,” the title track off her forthcoming LP which arrives on May 8 via Hausu Mountain. Right out of the gate, machine gun-like digital percussion and blood-curdling screams swirl frantically before the track enters a peaceful lull, underscoring bending, twinkling synths and staticky swells of background static. Soon, a cavalcade of noodling guitars bleeds through the mix, giving the track its wondrous, shimmering kick. The song then powers down for a moment – a tranquil calm before the storm, in which a final last-gasp stratospheric noise crescendo brings everything to its explosive, cathartic conclusion. The video clip, meanwhile, is crafted with deft visual aplomb; a flurry of eye-popping colors and graphic visual overlays conjure a kaleidoscopic, acid-washed visual tapestry. You can watch that video below, and pre-order Rainbow Bridge HERE.

Chicago producer Angel Marcloid’s Fire-Toolz project releases a new album Rainbow Bridge on Hausu Mountain on May 7. Today we premiere the music video of the album’s title track. The album follows Field Whispers (Into The Crystal Palace) on Orange Milk and returns Fire-Toolz to Hausu Mountain. Toiret Status, Koeosaeme, CVN, woopheadclrms, Machine Girl, and EQUIP participated in a Fire-Toolz remix album Triangular Reformat. Field Whispers (Into the Crystal Palace) was a groundbreaking program of electronic fantasy that was painstakingly realized with a delicate, complex, and three-dimensional vision. A consummate collage of MIDI composition, Fire-Toolz music changes and recombines constantly within each track, producing a magnificent baroque spread filled with beauty and chaos. Passing through the consciousness of sorrow and sadness, screams turn into love.

PREVIEW HERE
To be released on cassette and digitally on 3/1/18. C40 – white tape with black imprints. Pro-dubbed at NAC. 2-sided 3-panel J-Card with artwork from HausMo Max.
The music that Chicago-based producer/composer Angel Marcloid makes under the new moniker Nonlocal Forecast distills her experimentation in the prog, jazz fusion, and new age disciplines into pristine instrumental compositions teeming with intricate harmonic structures and complex webs of programmed percussion. Orbiting as another satellite around her genre-obliterating flagship projects like Fire-Toolz and MindSpring Memories, Nonlocal Forecast centers Marcloid’s practice on a palette of technical leads and atmospheric MIDI synth arrangements. For the project’s debut album Bubble Universe!, Marcloid drew inspiration from her personal studies in quantum physics/mechanics and non-dual spirituality. These frameworks steer her toward a strain of micro/macrocosmic composition in which the granular unfurling of rhythms and melodic elements evoke the movement of celestial bodies as much as subatomic particles on the smallest scale.
Bubble Universe! finds Marcloid emulating the format of a live ensemble, painstakingly programming each instrument in DAW software without the use of samples. Marcloid’s tiered systems of digital synth patches, modeled exclusively after the Korg M1 and the Korg Wavestation, interact in waves of steadily chiming pulses and chordal washes before streaking off into climaxes of melodic hands-on-keyboard input. Her meticulously programmed percussion tracks attest to her experience drumming in prog rock bands as they flow through interlaced time signatures, syncopated hard grooves, and rapid-fire tom fills. In contrast to her network of synthetic voices, Marcloid’s moments of guitar pyrotechnics burst out of the mix with fluid lead picking and searing distortion. With this composite of digital and analog instruments, Nonlocal Forecast sketches out a style of progressive composition that runs adjacent to the work of Allan Holdsworth and Casiopea. When her arrangements shed layers of legible melody in favor of drifting synth expanses, her tracks melt into the realm of ambient or new age music in the spirit of Jonn Serrie or Steve Halpern. Slowly modulating electronic voices build and smear together into fields of sound equally fit to soundtrack cosmological documentary footage or periods of mind-focusing meditation. Born from Marcloid’s lofty thematic frameworks centered on both outer and inner spaces, Bubble Universe! channels the emotion and wide-eyed fascination at the heart of any number of progressive musical styles into some of her most accessible and elementally entrancing compositions to date. Nonlocal Forecast exists in a state of quantum superposition between states of electronic complexity and self-nullifying synth drift, as each of her tracks peers through the glass to observe a particle in position for a moment before moving on to the next trial.

I’ve always been at odds with the idea of meditative music being, by necessity, soft or repetitive. The popular notion in the West persists of chanting, chimes, etc. True mindfulness though doesn’t require that set formula or certain boxes of Eastern traditions to check. With a bit of practice and the right mindset, the sounds are somewhat secondary. There’s a meditative quality to gnarly culture-jammer Fire-Toolz’s latest track “CODENAME BONKERS.” Even beyond the spiritual guidance of queer Buddhist priest Zenju Earthlyn Manuel (a nice sampling touch), this track has a different vibe to it compared to the earlier work of Fire-Toolz. Instead of the visceral, sample-heavy, twenty-songs-all-at-once approach that Angel Marcloid built the project from, “CODENAME BONKERS” is…mellow? The sonic perforation is absolutely still there; there’s a driving kick straight out of a gabber track but over a misty open chord, like rushing through a bonus level in Crash Bandicoot. In fact, it’s a rather bare track in contrast to what Fire-Toolz has previously done. The outrageous EBM sampling and black metal vocals are gone and what is left is a pure rolling beat, adorned with guitar and bass riffs as well as the occasional key squeal. It’s a strangely soothing sound. In the pursuit of zen, “CODENAME BONKERS” achieves something a little zany but no less sincere and mentally stimulating. With Fire-Toolz giving you all the textures and samples to work this one out, you’ll want to sculpt it with your mind. “May rage be settled."
