On This Day (8/3): Antemasque, Le Butcherettes

08/03/2014; The Mohawk, Austin, TX

As I said in yesterday’s post, Antemasque coming together was like a dream come true after the dark days following the Mars Volta’s break up when my favorite musical duo was on the outs. Luckily, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez salvaged things for this project, which was a wild punk project more akin to their earlier At the Drive-In days. Little did we know it was leading to an At the Drive-In reactivation, but for the time being, this was what we got. The album was a whole lot of fun (though it hasn’t aged well), and I was determined to catch all their first shows.

After arriving back in Austin from San Antonio, I basically slept all day since I had nowhere to sleep in SA. I got ready after my nap and headed down to the Mohawk. During Le Butcherettes set, I happened to get to talk to both Cedric and drummer Dave Elitch, which was a real treat. This also happened to be where I met my friend Mike Finger, when he worked for Mohawk. Anyway, here’s the pics for proof:

I commented to Cedric that I wanted to take a new picture since I had hoped I had lost weight since the last time we took a picture together. He said he hoped he had lost weight too, like that skinny dude ever needs to lose weight. Either way, I am now in the best shape of my life, so time for a new Cedric picture soon.

The show was wild. The crowd was so rowdy, at one point Cedric got it in his head to spray them with a fire extinguisher. At a later At the Drive-In show at Mohawk, he’d thank the Mohawk staff for not calling the police on him for that stunt. He was all over the place, climbing up the balcony and jumping off, all his usual antics. But the fire extinguisher incident will always stand out in my mind.

I would promptly leave the show on my bike, drunk, and run a red light. Somehow I didn’t go to jail, because that would have really hampered my plans to get on a bus to Houston the next morning for the third part of this Antemasque saga. I’ll write about that tomorrow.

“Well I did notice, and if you're going to do that can you please pull over somewhere.” She sighed as she threw the binoculars to the backseat and crossed her arms.

With a heavy sigh he pulled over, stepped out of the truck, then extinguished his cigarette on the unpaved road beneath his feet. “What's with the attitude, Lib?” He spoke with a concerned voice as he calmly got back into the truck, the white noise still playing in the background.

“I'm sorry... I'm still on edge about what happened when we left Marble Falls. That hallucination happened so fast, and I screamed when you told me never to scream with zombies around.” She sighed as her eyes continued to stare out her open window while she rubbed one of her wrists softly.

Tobias' gaze fell to the write she was rubbing, the mark he left when he pinned her was still fresh. Hard to believe he actually held onto her that tightly, and looking back it was hard to tell if her fearful eyes were because of the hallucination or because he was holding her down.

Suddenly a song they two had not heard since the outbreak started to play which brought out a different reaction from each sibling.

“Comin' over in my direction So thankful for that, it's such a blessin', yeah Turn every situation into heaven, yeah.”

“No no no! I'm turning it off.” Tobias stated with an annoyed tone as he started to reach for the volume of the radio. Quickly Libby reached over and grabbed his wrists with such force, he started to feel like the tables have turned.

She nodded as she sang along to the continuing song with a smile on her face, to which Tobias couldn't help but smile as well as he paced around the truck and smoked.
