is it her? his knuckles are adorned with gold so deep it is brown. it doesn’t even glimmer: it glummers. the overcoat he wears is creaking black, his scraggly moustache ends in two fine points. he wears a hat upon his head, and the peak is just long enough to shield one half of his ghostly face in velvet darkness.  her hair is different. her face is softer, brighter, shinier. is it her? “it’s about the risk. you’ve to make a bet.” finnbheara says it roughly, insistently. sniffs his rough finger, twirls his moustache. “that’s how it works. you bet something important. i do too. you guess which card is the queen of hearts.” he’s brisk. pulse burning. eyes lighting. but - his hands are sure. this is his barrel, his pub, his galway. gaillimh. they’re speaking in english now. funny how things change.  “and when i win, you’re dead. you owe me the forfeit.”  is it her?

Uonaidh-Mebd and Finvarra, Rulers of the Seelie Court
Queen and King of the Seelie Court of Fae, the one known as Oona-Mab or Uonaidh-Mebd rules alongside her husband, known as Finvarra or Finnbheara. Their seat is Cnoc Meadha, or Knockma Hill, beneath which their Court resides. Accessed through a cleft-tree Fae Gate nearby their Court is inarguably the largest and longest established of all courts, hence Uonaidh-Mebd and Finvarra’s positions as High Queen and King of all Fae. Uonaidh is said to have taken the name Mebd as an addition to her usual preferred moniker out of respect when the human queen died and was buried in a cairn atop the hill. Indeed of all Courts the Seelie have a fair respect for humankind, though, since the Secession of the Fae, the rulers themselves have kept stringently to the laws of it, and had no direct contact with humans.
Interestingly of the Fae Courts, Uonaidh-Mebd and Finvarra rule in a true partnership, something only matched by Na deirfúireacha na Morrignach of the Unseelie Court (their dark mirror) and Sétanta and Emer who rule the Court of Hounds and the Court of Fatal Fordings (twinned courts for twinned purposes). Even the Summer Court, which is ruled by a pair, is not ruled in perfect partnership, with Titania-Brighde having taken the reins of rulership from her husband for several hundred years now. This is considered by many to be a perfect example of why they rule the Court - they exist in balance rather than in rivalry, just as all Seelie should (even if they do not always succeed).
(Image One, Image Two)
(Read about Uonaidh Here, Finvarra Here, and Cnoc Meadha/Knockma Here. I hate that I have to include this but PLEASE DO NOT DELETE THE IMAGE SOURCE OR MY CAPTION.)

OH TALK ABOUT FINNIE'S WIFE, OONA ( una ? WHY ARE THERE SO MANY SPELLINGS OF THESE NAMES. )
oona ( una / oonagh )  is the wife of finnbheara, and therefore the lady of her husbands terrains : his faerie court, the realm of death, and the daoine sidhe (magical peoples) of the west.  oona herself is an incredibly powerful goddess who elected to stay behind after the banishment of the other gods. she rules over faeries, nature, and devotion. commonly, she would be referred to as queen of the faeries.
" HER EYES WERE SOFT PURPLE, HER HAIR GENTLY FLOWED LIKE THE SPIDER’S WEB.”oona is the image of beauty and genteelness - for her own reasons  ( as she was unmarried and unbound at the time of the banishment of the gods )  she stayed behind in ireland, rather than travel to tír na nóg, where her life would have been much easier, surrounded by faithful friends and family. instead, she stayed.  she is quiet, generally, and elusive. given her symbols and nature, it is possible she stayed for the nation and her devotion to it ,   or for the faeries who would have died without her concerted protected ,   or perhaps  for finnbheara, this being the least likely option. whatever the reason, it was done for compassion and stability, and without her involvement a lot of creatures would have died.  so, she gave up her life of beauty and family to care for faeries and non-gods who needed her.
Tumblr media
this self sacrificing nature is evident in her marriage with finnbheara - he seduces mortal women and takes fascination with them, but no one outside the marriage has seen oona disgruntled. their marriage was one of moral oneness and strength through unity rather than love, but they have not since divorced, either. this would not have been unusual in the more egalitarian culture they come from. finnbheara, even while desperately in love with medb, would not dare leave his wife. i can’t guess as to the exact intimacies of their marriage :  genuine selflessness in order to provide stability, a shared political ingenuity, and a deep reverential compassion for those they rule over, surely, but these personalities obviously attract:  not every partnership necessitates a marriage. oona’s private life is exactly that :  private. we know she soothed the souls of the faeries before they could leave the underground, we know she is calm and compassionate and composed. we know her magic is a match to that of finnbheara’s, but where his is to do with challenge and chance, death and ruling - hers is to do with devotion and perfectionism - with more elements to be explored, surely. i see oona as a very melancholic figure, not in just sadness, but in that while finnbheara rages and broods that he has been abandoned and cut off from his family, from his lover, he doesn’t realize that he is not the only one who is feeling alone. oona is composed, and she is the highest ranking woman in connacht, with no equal but for finnbheara, who is unfaithful. there must be attractive sides to them both :   finnbheara has razor sharp wit and a glorious mind, he is funny, and he makes people feel special. they care about the same things. oona is brave, regal, beautiful beyond compare, and is peaceful and kind in a very warlike world. their differences are also interesting :   where finnbheara is a rogue, she is a lady. where finnbheara is gruff, she is refined. he is subversive, judgemental, and trapped in his own loneliness. oona, on the other hand, is orderly, caring, and always extending her help.   to my examination, it strikes me that its pretty fucking rough for her. she’s this amazingly talented woman with an incredible sense of self discipline, who is also caring to the extent that she gives up everyone she knows aND YET. the family she is left with is a selfish husband, no children, and the faeries who, rightly, adore her - but will never understand her.

I am a demanding creature. I am selfish and cruel and extremely unreasonable.

❝   YOU   ARE   ALL   THIS   AND   MORE ,   WOMAN .    you are stubborn. arrogant.  and loud. very loud - and you never listen !   you are hard to please. you are impulsive where you ought be cautious, and blame yourself or others when there is no one to blame. you are the mother no child can grow to be, the sister i would fear to know, and the friend that i ...  ❞         his eyes sought hers ;  she was tough as steel and beautiful as gold.  for once, he did not know how to translate the beat of his heart into his mouth. he thought momentarily of oonagh ; her eyes were soft purple, her hair gently flowed like the spider’s web. to her, he would not dream of saying something so blunt. he was not her equal ;  he was her king.   but a queen ?  that was a creature one could be honest with.          ❝   because you are strong. stronger than any other i have ever known.    ❞       stable, unyielding, a conqueror.    there was nothing she could want for that would not fascinate him. there was nothing she could undertake that he would not watch with bated breath.  she would bathe the land in the scarlet hemorrhage of more complacent men before she allowed herself to lose a war. and, for his part, he would marvel at it.

❝  you be demanding, you be cruel, and you ought be blue for all i care.  a queen defines her land. you understand connacht. you love it as it is part of yourself.     for this and more,    THERE   IS   NO   ONE              mortal or otherwise,  woman or warrior             WHO   CAN   COMPARE .    ❞

I am not a little girl anymore, dazzled by your magic. It is my magic, now, too. ( D: I JUST WANTED TO SEND THIS ONE EVEN THO IT'S NOT ACCURATE IS IT )
finnbheara stands. he cannot look at her. he anchors his gaze to the ground, to the floating dust. it confuses him and hurts him that they live differently. not in the way oona and himself live differently ;  that is a curse of almosts. this is a curse of nevers. he exists in a way she did not. every passing day that he faces with immortal blood is a day rushing toward them both. a day in which some day she will be “she was” and not “she is.”  when he listens hard enough, he hears her blood pound, her muscles pluck, her hair spill. he hears her tick, sand falling through the hour glass. there are times when he has heard her throat tighten or her heart shatter. there are times he has heard her decaying before him. a grunt when she stands, the growing of a single silver hair amongst the gold.                  ❝   I   FORGET   HOW   YOUNG   YOU   ARE .    ❞     he says eventually. he is filled with guilt.
Tumblr media
❝   if deserving it was enough,   it   would   be   yours .      but   ‘ WHAT SHOULD BE ’  is anathema to   ‘ WHAT DO BE . ’     because we have always known, you and i, that it is not yours. whatever magic you deal with, it will never be yours. ❞       every duty he has ever had has hooked to his tongue. she cares for balance, but it is he who is bound by it. balance could be damned                if he could only damn it.           ❝  i think of how cruel it is that there is a world that you might conquer. a world that might welcome you, that is hidden behind something impassable and invisible as glass.  i think of this magic world being for you the way i want you to think of your being heart for me. ultimate, and unobtainable.  ❞                           YOU   FORGET   YOURSELF ,    MEDB .    you ought not be dazzled, but afraid. my magic is not yours. my affections, my counsel, my loyalties               you have this and more. but you are mortal. you do not understand. i must look savage to you, offering my love and denying your power at once.  but that is what heartbreak is.                         i am a savage master, because i have learned how to serve.    ❞    medb never would. he knows this. perhaps were she to bend to the will of immortality and magic, allow it to be her master, she would live like him. but she would not. he loves her, but he hates her, because she had damned herself, and damned him to be without her. he lives now. she does not.
