Finial in the Form of a Parrot
India, 17th–18th century
The strong sculptural traditions of pre-Islamic India continued to some extent during the later period, when figural elements such as this parrot were used as finials and other types of embellishment. The informal choice of subject and the simplicity of style suggest that this piece probably belonged in a provincial, rather than imperial, court setting. Ubiquitous in Indian life and often depicted in Mughal and Deccan paintings, parrots were also known in literature of the Mughal period, such as in the Tutinama (Tales of a Parrot).

FINIAL
For this first design, I used the letters q, b, p, d, e, m, a, o, and g. My inspiration at first was a mandala, but later on, I shaped it as an abstract sun shining. I learned that the typeface can change the whole appearance of a design, whether it has serifs or not or if it’s a more graphic font that might be better for some projects. But slight changes such as the thickness of a line or the width of it, can make a design look totally different. The parts you use can also affect this type of design because using the bigger or the thinnest part of a letter, even though it could have the same elements (such as the “E” just 4 lines), can change how the viewer perceives it.

Week 1 - Finial

Meet Darrell!
Darrell is a very handsome young man. He is shown here holding a beautiful flower.
The type principles I used for this exercise include visual hierarchy and effective negative space. Visual hierarchy is implemented by using a centred composition and making the main subject (the character) larger than the secondary subject (the flower). Effective negative space is used most effectively in the margins and within and surrounding the facial features. I have become more familiar with the base typographical anatomy of letters and the specific terminology used because of this exercise. I chose this design because I have made a goal for myself to have more fun with my school work, and this design allowed me to do that. I chose this font because it has defined anatomical parts, and I chose a serif font to add more dimension and movement to my design.
Darrell is made up of 10 different letter parts!
The stem of the uppercase letter "F"
The bowl of the uppercase letter "D"
The arm of the uppercase letter "K"
The leg of the uppercase letter "K"
The ear of the lowercase letter "g"
The counter of the lowercase letter "o"
The tittle of the lowercase letter "j"
The cross stroke of the lowercase letter "t"
The descender of the lowercase letter "y"
The spine of the uppercase letter "S"

Rafter finial in the shape of a dragon’s head and wind chime
Korea, 10th century
This finial in the shape of a dragon’s head would originally have been attached to a corner rafter of a royal hall or a Buddhist temple building.
